[0:00] Speaker 1: Get ready. Yes!
[0:02] Speaker 2: It's Joel Creasy.
[0:04] Speaker 3: Joel Creasy! With The Joel Creasy Show.
[0:11] Speaker 2: Welcome to The Joel Creasy Show podcast. Today I am
[0:14] Speaker 2: joined by just rising star, Aussie singer-songwriter, hailing from Mackay,
[0:21] Speaker 2: but now living in LA, man. Never do that again, Joel.
[0:26] Speaker 2: Jack Gray. He is ever so cool. His new album,
[0:29] Speaker 2: Swimming in Jeans, which I love the title and we
[0:31] Speaker 2: do discuss, is out now. We just cover life and
[0:38] Speaker 2: kind of what it's like going from Mackay and slowly
[0:42] Speaker 2: kind of working your way down the east coast of
[0:44] Speaker 2: Australia and eventually ending up in L.A., recording music and
[0:49] Speaker 2: doing what you love. And after we spoke, he was
[0:52] Speaker 2: off to do a gig in Germany. So it's so
[0:55] Speaker 2: fun to– talk to artists when they're at this point
[0:58] Speaker 2: in their journey. He has worked alongside so many amazing artists,
[1:04] Speaker 2: open for so many amazing artists, and has this new
[1:07] Speaker 2: album out now, which is very, I said to him,
[1:11] Speaker 2: very angsty, which I think he approved of. You know,
[1:16] Speaker 2: me talking music is always a real treat for you,
[1:21] Speaker 2: I imagine, and a treat for Jack Gray. He was divine.
[1:24] Speaker 2: So please enjoy our chat.
[1:26] Speaker 3: This is The Joel Creasy Show.
[1:29] Speaker 2: Jack Gray is here, whose debut album, Swimming in Jeans,
[1:32] Speaker 2: is out right now. Ooh. I love the title because
[1:35] Speaker 2: swimming in jeans is, I've done it, you know, always
[1:39] Speaker 2: by mistake.
[1:40] Speaker 3: Yes. And like after a few drinky poos. Correct.
[1:43] Speaker 2: And it's, it's hard.
[1:44] Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, that's, it's not, it's not necessarily easy.
[1:48] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[1:49] Speaker 3: Of the title.
[1:49] Speaker 2: Is it a literal title?
[1:51] Speaker 3: Well, so, okay.
[1:53] Speaker 1: How I stumbled across that phrase was in a literal sense.
[1:56] Speaker 1: There's a song called swimming in jeans and you meet
[1:58] Speaker 1: this girl, she like jumps in the pool and she's
[2:00] Speaker 1: got her jeans on.
[2:01] Speaker 2: Blah, blah, blah. Yeah.
[2:02] Speaker 1: Uh, but then I just thought that felt really like
[2:05] Speaker 1: sticky and like something that I would want to be like, Oh,
[2:08] Speaker 1: what's that about? And, um, and then when I started
[2:11] Speaker 1: thinking about it, you know, more and more deeply, it,
[2:14] Speaker 1: it kind of sums up the record in a cool
[2:16] Speaker 1: way of like, you're moving and you're, and you've got
[2:18] Speaker 1: all this extra weight on you and you're just trying
[2:19] Speaker 1: to keep your head above water and, A lot of
[2:21] Speaker 1: the songs reflect that. So, yeah, that's swimming in jeans
[2:25] Speaker 1: for you.
[2:26] Speaker 2: Nailed it. I love it. Okay, what do you reckon, Tata?
[2:29] Speaker 2: Swimming in skinny leg jeans or loose leg jeans?
[2:32] Speaker 3: That's a great question. I would say the loose leg.
[2:34] Speaker 1: Kind of the ones that I've been rocking, I feel
[2:36] Speaker 1: like would be tough because there's so much drag.
[2:38] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[2:38] Speaker 1: But your skinny jeans, you're kind of like a little seal,
[2:41] Speaker 1: just like a stylish seal.
[2:43] Speaker 2: Almost like a wetsuit.
[2:44] Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like a wetsuit. Yeah. It keeps you warm.
[2:46] Speaker 2: So you're from Mackay. You were talking to me off air.
[2:50] Speaker 2: Talk me through your, you went Mackay to?
[2:53] Speaker 3: Finished Mackay, finished my school there.
[2:54] Speaker 1: Then I'm the baby of the family. So my sisters
[2:58] Speaker 1: had already moved to Brisbane Sunny Coast and then my
[3:00] Speaker 1: parents wanted to move too.
[3:01] Speaker 3: So they moved to the Sunshine Coast.
[3:03] Speaker 2: Yep.
[3:04] Speaker 1: And I moved to Brisbane. I started studying music there
[3:06] Speaker 1: for a couple of months. But then I ended up
[3:09] Speaker 1: working with a manager and someone who put me in
[3:13] Speaker 1: touch with Warner Music in Sydney. And so I moved
[3:15] Speaker 1: to Sydney, deferred from college after.
[3:17] Speaker 3: Like six months.
[3:18] Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I did three months.
[3:20] Speaker 3: Yeah, right. We didn't make it real far, did we?
[3:22] Speaker 2: No.
[3:22] Speaker 3: It wasn't for us.
[3:24] Speaker 2: Not for us. So you're going further and further south. Yeah,
[3:26] Speaker 2: I just.
[3:26] Speaker 3: Keep making my way down.
[3:27] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[3:28] Speaker 3: Making my way.
[3:28] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[3:31] Speaker 1: Banger what a banger um and yeah so i'm in
[3:34] Speaker 1: sydney for a few years and i i mean there's
[3:36] Speaker 1: just so much to to remember i haven't thought about
[3:39] Speaker 1: this in a minute but um i met my now
[3:41] Speaker 1: management who were my publishing at the time they put
[3:44] Speaker 1: me in songwriting sessions we did the dance for a
[3:46] Speaker 1: little while yeah eventually i moved to la because i
[3:50] Speaker 1: wanted to like explore the songwriting producing part of things
[3:53] Speaker 1: and you know also the artist project but like you
[3:56] Speaker 1: just get into bigger rooms over there it's If you
[3:58] Speaker 1: want to kind of make waves over there, you need
[4:00] Speaker 1: to be in that market. So anyways, I moved over
[4:03] Speaker 1: there and I, yeah, I started plugging away, doing songwriting sessions, producing,
[4:07] Speaker 1: started doing K-pop.
[4:08] Speaker 3: I got into scoring.
[4:10] Speaker 1: Oh, yes.
[4:11] Speaker 2: K-pop?
[4:12] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[4:12] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[4:13] Speaker 3: I mean, who doesn't love a bit of K-pop?
[4:14] Speaker 2: My fiance got me into K-pop. I love K-pop.
[4:16] Speaker 3: Really?
[4:17] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[4:17] Speaker 2: Like I'm a mad black pinks.
[4:19] Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, of course.
[4:20] Speaker 2: Love. So, sorry, what do you mean you got into K-pop?
[4:22] Speaker 2: Did you start listening to K-pop or you were doing K-pop? Doing,
[4:25] Speaker 2: and I guess listening in the process.
[4:27] Speaker 1: But, yeah, so, no, I had a friend, and his
[4:31] Speaker 1: artist name is Yoji Money, but his name is Grant Legend.
[4:34] Speaker 1: And he is well-connected in that scene. And I started
[4:37] Speaker 1: writing with him for my project, but he was like,
[4:39] Speaker 1: if you're interested, I feel like your style of writing
[4:42] Speaker 1: would really suit the K-pop space. And I get these
[4:45] Speaker 1: pitches all the time. It's like, hey, we need a
[4:46] Speaker 1: song for this band that feels like this.
[4:48] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[4:49] Speaker 1: And so we started doing a few of those and
[4:51] Speaker 1: they started getting cut. And we're like, oh, wow, this
[4:53] Speaker 1: might be like, I might be cut out for this.
[4:56] Speaker 3: No pun intended. So I started writing heaps more. And yeah,
[4:59] Speaker 3: that became like a little thing that I do on
[5:01] Speaker 3: and off now.
[5:03] Speaker 2: Wow, that's so cool.
[5:04] Speaker 1: I love it so much because it feels like there's
[5:06] Speaker 1: no rules when making K-pop. It's just whatever feels good
[5:10] Speaker 1: and just whatever vibes. It's like there's no, I don't
[5:13] Speaker 1: have to put myself into a box like, When it's
[5:15] Speaker 1: my artist project, I'm like, I can't say that.
[5:17] Speaker 3: It's weird.
[5:18] Speaker 2: Yes, I know what you mean.
[5:18] Speaker 1: Yeah, it's less about like that and it's more just
[5:21] Speaker 1: whatever feels good. It doesn't even make sense because they
[5:23] Speaker 1: end up changing it to Korean later.
[5:25] Speaker 2: Yeah. I commentated Eurovision for a long time, which I
[5:28] Speaker 2: don't know how across Eurovision you are, but it feels
[5:30] Speaker 2: very similar. Like the more bonkers, the better. Right.
[5:32] Speaker 3: Yeah. That makes a lot of sense. Okay.
[5:34] Speaker 2: So you're doing a bit of K-pop and then you're
[5:36] Speaker 2: now just killing it, basically.
[5:38] Speaker 3: Oh, thank you. I don't know about that.
[5:39] Speaker 1: But we're nice and busy at the moment. But yeah,
[5:43] Speaker 1: I started doing some scoring things. My partner is in
[5:46] Speaker 1: the film world. She grew up on Disney Channel and
[5:49] Speaker 1: now she's, you know, film producer, writer, actor, all the things. Yeah.
[5:54] Speaker 1: So all of my friends are in that world over
[5:56] Speaker 1: there and started, um, scoring some projects through them. And
[5:59] Speaker 1: that's been really, really fun. It's definitely something I want
[6:01] Speaker 1: to like explore a lot deeper, you know, once the
[6:05] Speaker 1: artist stuff chills out a little bit, but, uh, yeah,
[6:09] Speaker 1: just been bit bopping all over the place. The last
[6:11] Speaker 1: few years I've really locked in. I signed to, um,
[6:13] Speaker 1: Island Records and I absolutely love that team. um, Yeah,
[6:17] Speaker 1: I've just been making this album and it's the debut album.
[6:21] Speaker 1: And it took me a while to figure out what
[6:24] Speaker 1: kind of music I wanted to make, what kind of
[6:26] Speaker 1: things I wanted to say and how I wanted to
[6:27] Speaker 1: say it.
[6:28] Speaker 2: Yeah, the debut, it must be pressure because it's kind
[6:30] Speaker 2: of like your first statement.
[6:32] Speaker 1: Yeah, and I didn't want to rush it out either
[6:34] Speaker 1: because I've actually written two other albums that were going
[6:36] Speaker 1: to come out.
[6:37] Speaker 3: But then at the last minute, I was like, wait,
[6:38] Speaker 3: this doesn't feel like me.
[6:39] Speaker 2: Oh, really?
[6:40] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[6:40] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[6:41] Speaker 3: So I kind of didn't want to rush it.
[6:43] Speaker 1: And I'm glad I didn't because, you know, I'm like,
[6:47] Speaker 1: I just, I want to be considered with the stuff
[6:50] Speaker 1: I put out into the world now.
[6:51] Speaker 3: And the older I get, the more I kind of
[6:53] Speaker 3: don't want to just like throw out whatever. Yeah.
[6:55] Speaker 2: I know what you mean. Yes. Yes. Quality over quantity.
[6:58] Speaker 2: And it took me a while to learn that also.
[7:00] Speaker 3: It does. You know, we come around to it in
[7:02] Speaker 3: the end.
[7:02] Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I always, I used to joke that
[7:04] Speaker 2: the N and the O are broken on my keyboard.
[7:08] Speaker 2: Get them fixed.
[7:09] Speaker 3: Literally.
[7:09] Speaker 2: I was listening to Look At You before. Very angsty.
[7:13] Speaker 3: So angsty.
[7:14] Speaker 2: I love anything angsty. Oh, yeah.
[7:17] Speaker 3: I can tell.
[7:19] Speaker 2: Such an angsty man.
[7:20] Speaker 3: Yeah, just sitting over here.
[7:21] Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm full. Like, Jagged Little Pill is the greatest
[7:24] Speaker 2: album of all time.
[7:24] Speaker 3: Of course.
[7:25] Speaker 2: Aside from Swimming In Jeans. Yeah. So the song you sing,
[7:29] Speaker 2: How Can I Love You, if I Can't Even Look
[7:31] Speaker 2: At You, is this you singing? Is this from past experience?
[7:34] Speaker 1: Yeah, this one actually happened to a mate of mine
[7:37] Speaker 1: a few years ago.
[7:38] Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
[7:39] Speaker 3: And enough time had passed where we spoke about it.
[7:41] Speaker 3: And he was like, yeah, you can talk about it
[7:42] Speaker 3: in a song.
[7:43] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[7:44] Speaker 3: Thank you very much. This is going to be bad
[7:46] Speaker 3: for you, but great.
[7:47] Speaker 2: No, no, no, no.
[7:48] Speaker 1: But throughout that whole experience, we kind of, I was
[7:52] Speaker 1: there and we, we talked through it a lot because
[7:54] Speaker 1: it's obviously a very heavy thing to happen to someone.
[7:56] Speaker 1: Being cheated on and finding out the way he did.
[8:00] Speaker 3: So, yeah, I sat through a lot of those discussions.
[8:03] Speaker 2: You were the therapist.
[8:04] Speaker 3: Yes, I'm a horrible therapist, but I was there at least.
[8:08] Speaker 3: You know, I listened.
[8:09] Speaker 1: And we all know that feeling of jealousy, and we
[8:12] Speaker 1: can all relate to that, and we've had our own
[8:14] Speaker 1: versions of it.
[8:14] Speaker 2: I'm told, yes.
[8:15] Speaker 3: Yes, I'm told.
[8:18] Speaker 1: And so I kind of, with that song, I just
[8:21] Speaker 1: drew on my personal experiences of feeling that feeling.
[8:23] Speaker 3: And, yeah. and kind of put it into like his
[8:27] Speaker 3: story a little bit. And it's a heavy one.
[8:31] Speaker 2: The Joel Creasy Show. It's bad to say, but sometimes
[8:34] Speaker 2: it was one of those songs and I was listening
[8:35] Speaker 2: to it. I was like, oh, I need to add
[8:37] Speaker 2: this to the playlist. If. I would ever go through
[8:40] Speaker 2: another breakup. Yeah.
[8:42] Speaker 3: I'll save this one for later.
[8:43] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[8:44] Speaker 3: For when I need it.
[8:45] Speaker 2: That's for the playlist in the car when I'm, you know,
[8:47] Speaker 2: heartbroken and on the freeway just belting it out.
[8:49] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[8:50] Speaker 2: With like, you know, a bit of Adele and a
[8:51] Speaker 2: bit of Alanis in there. Yeah.
[8:53] Speaker 1: It's not the perfect song for when you're in a
[8:55] Speaker 1: good mood, you're freshly in love. It's not really the
[8:57] Speaker 1: one for you.
[8:58] Speaker 2: The fact that I– my God. It's been a while.
[9:02] Speaker 2: But I still enjoyed it. So that is testament to
[9:05] Speaker 2: the song. And then Blind Lovin' is on the new
[9:08] Speaker 2: album as well. Yeah. Have you ever been on a
[9:10] Speaker 2: blind date?
[9:12] Speaker 3: Oh, no, I've never been. Have you ever been on
[9:14] Speaker 3: a blind date?
[9:14] Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, actually. And it was to the movies to
[9:18] Speaker 2: see what was the film? Oh, have you heard about
[9:21] Speaker 2: the Morgans? It was a Sarah Jessica Parker vehicle. And
[9:25] Speaker 2: it was terrible. And the guy said, I'm going to
[9:28] Speaker 2: go get some popcorn or a choc top or something.
[9:30] Speaker 3: Don't tell me he didn't come back.
[9:31] Speaker 2: Never came back.
[9:32] Speaker 3: You're kidding me.
[9:32] Speaker 2: And I had to sit through that piece of shit
[9:34] Speaker 2: film on my own.
[9:36] Speaker 3: How far into the movie? How far did he make it?
[9:38] Speaker 2: Oh, like 30 minutes. I was like, greedy guts. Like,
[9:40] Speaker 2: we only just finished the popcorn.
[9:42] Speaker 3: That's brutal.
[9:43] Speaker 2: And it was a terrible film. Wow.
[9:45] Speaker 1: Yeah, that's not good. It wasn't like, you know, The
[9:47] Speaker 1: Odyssey or something cool where you're like, at least it's.
[9:49] Speaker 2: A good movie. No, it was Sarah Jessica Parker and
[9:54] Speaker 2: Hugh Grant. And you've never heard of it because it's
[9:55] Speaker 2: that bad.
[9:56] Speaker 1: Yeah, I was going to say I've never heard of
[9:57] Speaker 1: the movie, but I'm sorry.
[9:59] Speaker 3: That's awful.
[10:00] Speaker 2: Yeah. So you haven't ever, no, yeah, don't do a
[10:02] Speaker 2: blind date.
[10:03] Speaker 1: No, never done a blind date. And that song is
[10:05] Speaker 1: definitely not giving this experience.
[10:08] Speaker 2: Yeah, blind loving.
[10:09] Speaker 3: Yeah, blind loving.
[10:11] Speaker 1: It is about when you're freshly, you've kind of just
[10:14] Speaker 1: met this person, but just instantly you are like, damn,
[10:17] Speaker 1: this could be the one.
[10:18] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[10:18] Speaker 1: And you know that that's pretty irrational because it's so new.
[10:22] Speaker 1: But you're just willing to just dive in headfirst, go
[10:25] Speaker 1: into the situation blindly. And that's always a nice feeling.
[10:28] Speaker 1: It's an intense one, though. But the song, yeah, I
[10:31] Speaker 1: just wanted a fun song that felt really fun to
[10:34] Speaker 1: sing and also just made you feel good.
[10:36] Speaker 2: Yeah, 100%. I also once told someone, I'm oversharing fast.
[10:39] Speaker 3: I love it.
[10:40] Speaker 2: That I love them within like two hours of meeting them. Yeah,
[10:43] Speaker 2: you did.
[10:43] Speaker 3: You've done that?
[10:44] Speaker 2: I can't even remember his name.
[10:45] Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. Well, that sounds about right. What a loser.
[10:50] Speaker 3: It happens. But was it like a casual, like, all right,
[10:52] Speaker 3: love you, bye? Or was it like a- No, it
[10:54] Speaker 3: was like- I love you.
[10:55] Speaker 2: Okay, it gets cringier. I think I prefaced it with,
[10:59] Speaker 2: get ready to vomit. I feel like I've known you forever.
[11:03] Speaker 3: Oh, my God. I was 18 or something, please.
[11:05] Speaker 2: I was 18. I was still living in Perth. I
[11:07] Speaker 2: was on, like, a trip to Sydney.
[11:08] Speaker 3: And it didn't work?
[11:10] Speaker 2: Shock horror.
[11:11] Speaker 1: To my surprise, that didn't go over like I thought
[11:15] Speaker 1: it would.
[11:16] Speaker 2: One of my other favourite lyrics is on your song.
[11:19] Speaker 2: On your song? See, I'm not a muso. No, you're good.
[11:21] Speaker 2: Dumb shit. 17 ketamine evergreen.
[11:25] Speaker 3: Oh, that was, that was, yep.
[11:26] Speaker 2: I know what two of those words mean.
[11:27] Speaker 3: What is ketamine? Oh, I don't even know.
[11:29] Speaker 1: Yeah, it's, I think it's like a, it's like something that,
[11:32] Speaker 1: you know, a feeling you feel when someone does something
[11:34] Speaker 1: nice to you.
[11:34] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I believe it's, oh, you know,
[11:36] Speaker 2: for the horses. Yeah, for the horses. Yeah.
[11:39] Speaker 1: Just to chill the horses out when they're, when they're
[11:41] Speaker 1: a bit excited.
[11:41] Speaker 2: 100%. Popular around Mardi Gras time.
[11:44] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[11:45] Speaker 2: Yeah. Although it's also fun, all the lyrics, it's all, yeah.
[11:48] Speaker 2: So you've had such a hand in writing. It also
[11:51] Speaker 2: is very, well thought out.
[11:53] Speaker 3: Oh, thank you very much. That's very sweet.
[11:55] Speaker 1: Yeah. I, I definitely, um, spent every day with these
[12:00] Speaker 1: songs for a few years and made a million different
[12:03] Speaker 1: versions of each song. And, um, yeah, I mean, the
[12:06] Speaker 1: beauty of like being a self producer is you can
[12:09] Speaker 1: sit in your bedroom and, um, really explore until you
[12:13] Speaker 1: find the right combination of sounds to go with this song.
[12:15] Speaker 3: And I really did do that.
[12:17] Speaker 2: Well, when do you, okay. So when do you go, okay, enough,
[12:19] Speaker 2: I can't.
[12:20] Speaker 1: I don't, I just, I have to find people I
[12:23] Speaker 1: trust to be like, you're done.
[12:26] Speaker 3: This is out of hand. You are too much.
[12:29] Speaker 2: Yeah, otherwise you'd never leave the room. Yeah. Yeah.
[12:32] Speaker 3: I've got a finishing problem. I know.
[12:35] Speaker 2: I've got the opposite. I'm like, I'll do a, because
[12:38] Speaker 2: I'm a stand-up, I'll dot point out a set list
[12:41] Speaker 2: and then I'll get bored halfway through and I'll be like,
[12:43] Speaker 2: I'll just make the rest up.
[12:44] Speaker 3: Yeah, okay. Well, that's cool that you can just do that, though.
[12:46] Speaker 2: I know. We need to somehow meet in the middle.
[12:48] Speaker 3: Yeah, okay. We'll talk about it later.
[12:50] Speaker 2: One of the first, you supported Fray Sky. She was
[12:52] Speaker 2: one of the first guests I had on the show.
[12:54] Speaker 3: She is incredible, isn't she?
[12:55] Speaker 2: I was like, are you really 16? This is outrageous. Yeah.
[12:59] Speaker 1: It doesn't make much sense that she's so mature and so, yeah,
[13:03] Speaker 1: beyond her years.
[13:04] Speaker 3: It's really disheartening.
[13:05] Speaker 1: I know.
[13:06] Speaker 2: I felt so incompetent.
[13:07] Speaker 3: Well, now I feel like I should just go down
[13:09] Speaker 3: a hole. What am I even doing here? Yeah.
[13:13] Speaker 2: She's so funny and quick. I was like, what is happening?
[13:16] Speaker 2: And then I said, are you really 16? And she
[13:18] Speaker 2: tricked me.
[13:19] Speaker 3: Anyway. She tricked you. Oh, okay. That sounds like you're messy.
[13:22] Speaker 2: Yeah, and I believed her.
[13:23] Speaker 3: Yeah, okay.
[13:24] Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm dumb. So you've been going around Australia.
[13:29] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[13:29] Speaker 2: How have the shows been?
[13:31] Speaker 1: The shows have been incredible. Everyone has been so awesome.
[13:36] Speaker 1: And there's just been so much support and so much love.
[13:38] Speaker 1: And to see everyone like screaming, like a whole room
[13:41] Speaker 1: of people screaming these lyrics back.
[13:42] Speaker 2: What's that like?
[13:44] Speaker 3: Well, it's a bit of a trip. It feels... I
[13:46] Speaker 3: don't know.
[13:47] Speaker 1: It cannot feel very real when you're just in your
[13:49] Speaker 1: room making these songs and you upload them and you
[13:52] Speaker 1: see people online maybe sharing it or saying nice things,
[13:54] Speaker 1: but it doesn't feel real until you're in a room
[13:56] Speaker 1: and everyone's screaming louder than you are with the PA.
[14:01] Speaker 3: It's a trip.
[14:03] Speaker 1: And it gives me goosies. And so anyways, I'm so
[14:06] Speaker 1: grateful that I get to do this and this is
[14:09] Speaker 1: a reality. I don't take it for granted at all, but... Yeah, no,
[14:13] Speaker 1: the shows were incredible. They went very smoothly. I mean,
[14:16] Speaker 1: I was running everything off my little laptop, the lighting show.
[14:20] Speaker 2: Wow, you really are a one-man band.
[14:22] Speaker 3: Oh, I try to be, mate. Well, I couldn't afford
[14:23] Speaker 3: a real one.
[14:25] Speaker 2: No, I've been there.
[14:25] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[14:26] Speaker 2: I've been there.
[14:26] Speaker 1: It's not cheap these days. But one day, hopefully, we
[14:30] Speaker 1: can have a band and do all the bells and whistles.
[14:33] Speaker 1: Thousands of crew.
[14:35] Speaker 3: Yeah. Oh, you know, people to hold the guitar, to
[14:38] Speaker 3: tune it.
[14:38] Speaker 1: Dude, that's the hardest part for me in my sets is, like,
[14:41] Speaker 1: trying to speak while tuning my guitar.
[14:43] Speaker 3: Because there's so much tuning going on between each song.
[14:46] Speaker 2: I don't know anything about... Well, my guitars keep.
[14:50] Speaker 1: Going out of tune, and when I put a caper on,
[14:52] Speaker 1: it kind of throws out the tuning. So I have
[14:54] Speaker 1: to retune it once I've put a caper on to
[14:56] Speaker 1: make the guitar higher.
[14:58] Speaker 2: Oh, that sounds really hard. I literally just talked into
[15:01] Speaker 2: a microphone. That sounds really hard.
[15:02] Speaker 3: No, no, it's fine. You get used to it. But me,
[15:05] Speaker 3: the big dumb idiot.
[15:07] Speaker 1: I left my tuner, like it's all set up to
[15:08] Speaker 1: my rig, which is like not near the microphone. So
[15:11] Speaker 1: between every song, I like walk over to this thing
[15:13] Speaker 1: and I'm trying to tune, but my microphone's over there.
[15:16] Speaker 1: So I just have to like yell at everyone. I'm
[15:17] Speaker 1: just screaming at everyone. I was like, who's this guy
[15:20] Speaker 1: yelling at us?
[15:21] Speaker 2: But they're loving it. They're yelling your lyrics.
[15:24] Speaker 3: No, it's great. It's fine. We love this. It's kind
[15:27] Speaker 3: of fine.
[15:27] Speaker 1: I take my ears out and I can like, you know,
[15:29] Speaker 1: just be with everyone in the room and it feels
[15:31] Speaker 1: really like just a bunch of friends hanging out.
[15:33] Speaker 2: Yeah. So where are you going after this to, you know,
[15:37] Speaker 2: to show off Swimming in Jeans, which is excellent, by
[15:40] Speaker 2: the way. Thank you so much.
[15:41] Speaker 3: You're very sweet. Off to Germany. We're going to play
[15:43] Speaker 3: this festival called Reeperbahn.
[15:45] Speaker 2: What a cool sentence to say.
[15:46] Speaker 3: Off to Germany.
[15:47] Speaker 2: I know.
[15:47] Speaker 3: It's so fun. So lucky. But yeah, it's off to
[15:50] Speaker 3: Hamburg playing this festival called Reeperbahn.
[15:52] Speaker 2: Nice.
[15:53] Speaker 3: There's a few little shows there.
[15:54] Speaker 1: And then back to North America for a tour with
[15:58] Speaker 1: one of my favorite bands. They're a new up and
[15:59] Speaker 1: coming band, but they're called In Colour.
[16:01] Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
[16:03] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[16:04] Speaker 2: Yeah. They come across my desk the other day. Right.
[16:06] Speaker 2: I was talking about them. Yes.
[16:08] Speaker 1: Yeah, they're incredible. They just make such cool music. And
[16:12] Speaker 1: so it's a couple of shows in North America on
[16:15] Speaker 1: the West Coast. And then I'm home for a little
[16:18] Speaker 1: bit in L.A. writing for the next record.
[16:21] Speaker 2: Right. Okay, so we're not going to see you for
[16:22] Speaker 2: a while because you're a perfectionist and you're going to
[16:24] Speaker 2: be in your room.
[16:24] Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, for the next five years.
[16:25] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
[16:27] Speaker 3: So hi and bye.
[16:28] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
[16:29] Speaker 1: No, I definitely will not be taking a long time
[16:31] Speaker 1: to make the next one. I'm already, like, a couple
[16:33] Speaker 1: of songs into it.
[16:34] Speaker 2: You match fit now.
[16:35] Speaker 3: Yeah. We're rehearsed. We're like a well-oiled machine now. We're
[16:40] Speaker 3: just churning them out.
[16:41] Speaker 2: Yeah. Who are your, like, inspirations growing up? Like, who
[16:44] Speaker 2: did you love?
[16:46] Speaker 3: I've watched so many different people. That's good.
[16:48] Speaker 2: I like it when people have a, because mine are
[16:51] Speaker 2: very obvious. Like, I don't know if you can tell.
[16:54] Speaker 1: Oh, yes, yes.
[16:55] Speaker 2: She doesn't look like that. That Kylie Barbie is such
[16:58] Speaker 2: a terrible, terrible interpretation of Kylie.
[17:01] Speaker 3: That's awesome. And who's this smoking gentleman right here in
[17:04] Speaker 3: Men's Health?
[17:05] Speaker 2: Oh, I know, but I don't know why that they
[17:07] Speaker 2: put the before on there. I'm like, thanks. Cool. I'm
[17:10] Speaker 2: glad it's grayed out. Um, yeah, like that, that's kind
[17:13] Speaker 2: of the before that.
[17:14] Speaker 3: Um, yeah.
[17:15] Speaker 2: Who are yours?
[17:16] Speaker 3: Um, okay.
[17:17] Speaker 1: So, uh, as a child, you know, my, uh, my
[17:20] Speaker 1: parents were into like eighties glam rock stuff, Bon Jovi, Kiss,
[17:24] Speaker 1: Motley Crue, all of the fun stuff. So I kind
[17:27] Speaker 1: of grew up around a lot of that. Um, but
[17:29] Speaker 1: I also loved a lot of country music being from
[17:31] Speaker 1: up in Mackay. And so like Buzz Me Maroo and, um, Oh,
[17:35] Speaker 1: and then when I got to high school, I started
[17:37] Speaker 1: to get more into like indie bands, like ballpark music
[17:39] Speaker 1: and the San Cisco and stuff like that. Um, and
[17:43] Speaker 1: then since then, it's been just so many things have
[17:45] Speaker 1: come and gone. So many phases of like favorite bands,
[17:48] Speaker 1: like the 1975 for me, we were a big one.
[17:50] Speaker 1: Oh yeah.
[17:50] Speaker 3: Bonova, Frank Ocean, Dominic Fike.
[17:54] Speaker 1: Um, Oh, but obviously these stuff like the Beatles that
[17:58] Speaker 1: you grow up just hearing it, you can just respect
[18:00] Speaker 1: how amazing that music is.
[18:01] Speaker 2: And the nostalgia of it all.
[18:03] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[18:04] Speaker 1: Um, bit of Ray Charles and Bill Withers, all the
[18:06] Speaker 1: old classics, but just a bit of everything, dude.
[18:09] Speaker 2: Right.
[18:09] Speaker 3: I don't know.
[18:10] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[18:11] Speaker 2: Oh my gosh. Well, you're killing it. Congratulations. Swimming in
[18:13] Speaker 2: Chains is out now. It is fantastic. It's such a
[18:15] Speaker 2: great listen.
[18:16] Speaker 3: It's so sweet.
[18:17] Speaker 2: The lyrics are, yeah, there's some brilliant lyrics in there
[18:21] Speaker 2: and enjoy.
[18:23] Speaker 3: Oh, stop yourself.
[18:24] Speaker 2: Thank you.
[18:24] Speaker 3: I will.
[18:25] Speaker 2: That is a kill. I'm jealous. And yeah, I always
[18:29] Speaker 2: say I cannot wait to forget the little people. But yeah,
[18:32] Speaker 2: forget the little people. But, you know, don't forget me.
[18:34] Speaker 3: No, never. How could I?
[18:36] Speaker 1: You should just come to Germany with us and have
[18:38] Speaker 1: some big beers and some wieners.
[18:40] Speaker 2: The last time I was in Germany was Berlin. And
[18:43] Speaker 2: I don't need to tell you how that turned out.
[18:45] Speaker 3: Yeah, I've heard.
[18:46] Speaker 1: You see, I've spent a little bit of time in Berlin,
[18:47] Speaker 1: but only like passing through on tour. And I've heard
[18:50] Speaker 1: it gets pretty crazy.
[18:51] Speaker 2: I've been to Berghain. Oh, stop. This is one of
[18:54] Speaker 2: my good advice. Walk straight in. Like I had to queue,
[18:58] Speaker 2: but I wasn't like, stop, don't come in.
[19:00] Speaker 3: Just right this way, sir.
[19:01] Speaker 2: I know. How rock and roll. Nothing as cool as
[19:03] Speaker 2: that has ever happened again.
[19:04] Speaker 3: I mean, I'm kind of like nervous now around you.
[19:07] Speaker 2: No pressure.
[19:07] Speaker 3: I don't know how to act.
[19:08] Speaker 2: Well, you go try Berghain and then get back to me.
[19:10] Speaker 2: I will.
[19:10] Speaker 1: If you can't get in, I'll give you some tips.
[19:12] Speaker 1: I probably won't be able to get in. I'll be like,
[19:13] Speaker 1: who's this guy? You're fine.
[19:15] Speaker 2: Congratulations.
[19:16] Speaker 3: Thank you so much. You're the best.
[19:17] Speaker 2: Thanks. The Joel Creasy Show is done. But Joel's got
[19:23] Speaker 2: plenty more to say.
