Send me a text 💌 We all know one. Some of us have been one. And decades later, we can still name every mean girl from our school days — because that kind of thing stays with you. The problem? Some didn't grow out of it. They grew up and got a keyboard. This episode is about online bullying, why it's worse now than it's ever been, and what you can actually do about it — starting with protecting your own peace. In this episode: • Why mean girls became mean women — and why that says everything about them and nothing about you • How bullying has fundamentally changed: when Melissa was young, she could go home and it stopped. Kids today don't have that escape. • How can we tell our children not to bully when adults are doing the exact same thing online? • The block button — why it's one of the most powerful tools you have and why using it isn't weakness • Why social media also gives you something extraordinary: the ability to put yourself at tables with people you never could have reached before • Why whatever you focus on grows — and what happens when you stop feeding the drama • How to nourish the relationships that actually expand your heart, your mind, and your horizon Timestamps: 0:00 – Mean Girls Still Exist 0:02 – Welcome to Becoming Her 0:56 – Bullying Goes Online 2:26 – Why It Hurts More Now 3:25 – Use the Block Button 3:46 – Choose Better Tables 5:00 – Stop Feeding the Drama 5:42 – The Becoming Question 6:06 – Closing and Call to Action The Becoming Question: Are you feeding into the mean girls — or are you nourishing the relationships that bring you real joy and growth? ## Transcript

[0:00] SPEAKER_00: I seriously think that we need an intervention in this world.
[0:05] SPEAKER_00: Because mean women are raising their children, and bullying is more rampant than ever.
[0:11] SPEAKER_00: Decades and decades later, we can all remember who the mean girls were.
[0:16] SPEAKER_00: The truth is, there are still mean girls who've become mean women.
[0:22] SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Becoming Her.
[0:23] SPEAKER_00: I'm Melissa Thompson.
[0:25] SPEAKER_00: This is a podcast about lifelong evolution.
[0:28] SPEAKER_00: For the woman who knows she's not finished, not behind, not late, just in the making.
[0:36] SPEAKER_00: And that's exactly where you're supposed to be.
[0:41] SPEAKER_00: Ah, mean girls.
[0:44] SPEAKER_00: We all know one.
[0:46] SPEAKER_00: Some?
[0:48] SPEAKER_00: You might be one.
[0:49] SPEAKER_00: If so, scroll on.
[0:51] SPEAKER_00: This is for everybody who has had to deal with that.
[0:56] SPEAKER_00: Let's face it, when we're younger, we know that to be true.
[1:00] SPEAKER_00: Mean girl clicks, mean girl drama.
[1:04] SPEAKER_00: Did we ever think that we would grow older and we'd see it all over social media by mean girls who became mean women?
[1:13] SPEAKER_00: I seriously think that we need an intervention in this world.
[1:18] SPEAKER_00: We need to protect not only our peace as we scroll along, but that of future generations.
[1:25] SPEAKER_00: Because mean women are raising their children.
[1:30] SPEAKER_00: And bullying is more rampant than ever.
[1:33] SPEAKER_00: Whether you have little boys, little girls in schools across the world, it continues to happen.
[1:40] SPEAKER_00: But how can we tell our children not to bully when you go online and see grown-ups doing the exact same thing?
[1:48] SPEAKER_00: Aren't we all old enough and educated enough and understand the world enough around us to realize that there was a time and place for that?
[2:00] SPEAKER_00: You know, the people who talk behind the scenes, the people who never have anything good to say, that affects so many people.
[2:10] SPEAKER_00: When we look at our own children as they're growing up and we teach them right from wrong.
[2:16] SPEAKER_00: But now with social media and a keyboard, anybody can say anything.
[2:22] SPEAKER_00: There are still real people that all that is being projected at.
[2:26] SPEAKER_00: When I was younger, I remember being bullied in school.
[2:30] SPEAKER_00: And I was talking to some friends earlier.
[2:34] SPEAKER_00: It's fascinating how decades and decades later, we can all remember who the mean girls were in our school and how it might have impacted us a little along the way.
[2:46] SPEAKER_00: So, how in the world did we bring it forward and it exists online now?
[2:51] SPEAKER_00: That is a question that is worth exploring.
[2:56] SPEAKER_00: When I was young and I was dealing with my bully, I could go home.
[3:01] SPEAKER_00: They didn't follow me there, they couldn't get in.
[3:05] SPEAKER_00: I didn't have a cell phone, none of that.
[3:08] SPEAKER_00: Kids back then had peace, at least in their own home.
[3:13] SPEAKER_00: It wasn't easy, but they had their safe haven.
[3:18] SPEAKER_00: Now, online, it's everywhere, it's in front of them every single day.
[3:25] SPEAKER_00: And as adults, we have a beautiful way to deal with that.
[3:29] SPEAKER_00: It's called the block button.
[3:32] SPEAKER_00: And it is what doesn't serve you, you release.
[3:36] SPEAKER_00: The truth is, there are still mean girls who've become mean women.
[3:42] SPEAKER_00: That speaks more about them than it does the person they're bullying.
[3:46] SPEAKER_00: But in that same world of social media and being able to hit the block button when you need to, you also have the ability to put yourself at tables with people you could have never dreamed of before.
[4:02] SPEAKER_00: Meaning your reach to the entire world is there, whether it's a podcast, whether it's a group, whether it is somebody who makes you feel good about yourself, inspired, or just that you have a friend.
[4:20] SPEAKER_00: There are way more nicer people than there are mean ones.
[4:24] SPEAKER_00: And our beautiful ability to self-select is just that.
[4:30] SPEAKER_00: You're never going to do anything to change somebody who's miserable about their own life.
[4:36] SPEAKER_00: And if somebody wants to talk about you and you have haters, well, welcome to the club, my friend.
[4:42] SPEAKER_00: They're everywhere.
[4:43] SPEAKER_00: People can get very confident behind a keyboard, but stepping into who you are supposed to be, focusing on you, not the meanness, is far more empowering than anything else.
[5:00] SPEAKER_00: And sometimes having to endure mean girl mentality, it's not something you can avoid because of whatever situation you're in.
[5:11] SPEAKER_00: But what you can do is stop feeding it.
[5:16] SPEAKER_00: Whatever you focus on grows.
[5:19] SPEAKER_00: So nourish the relationships that bring you joy.
[5:23] SPEAKER_00: Nourish the relationships that expand your horizon, your heart, your mind, and your soul, and stop feeding the other.
[5:34] SPEAKER_00: It will shrink and that will go away.
[5:37] SPEAKER_00: And what you bring light to, that will brighten your day.
[5:42] SPEAKER_00: So my becoming question to you today is are you feeding into the mean girls or are you nourishing the beautiful relationships you can have outside of that?
[5:58] SPEAKER_00: Remember, you're not late, you're not behind, you're not finished.
[6:03] SPEAKER_00: You are still in the making.
[6:05] SPEAKER_00: Keep becoming.
[6:06] SPEAKER_00: Thanks for being here.
[6:07] SPEAKER_00: If you know someone who needs to hear this, send it to them.
