On a night in September 2016, Robert Poynter — a veteran fire captain deeply respected by his community — was found dead, and beside him stood his terrified wife, Chacey Poynter, who was 18 years younger than him. She claimed her husband had been attacked by a stranger while helping move her car, but detectives soon began to suspect that something about her story didn’t add up. As questions poured in immediately after the incident, investigators uncovered thousands of secret messages hidden inside her cellphone. What exactly were those messages trying to reveal? Why did a man who had spent his life saving others at disaster scenes meet such a lonely and tragic end?
