[0:17] Speaker 1: by Alichinji The Book of A Thousand Nights and the Night,
[0:21] Speaker 1: Volume seven by Anonymous, translated by Richard Francis Burton, section
[0:28] Speaker 1: twenty eight. When it was the seven hundred and eighteenth night,
[0:35] Speaker 1: she resumed, it has reached me, auspicious king, that the broker,
[0:40] Speaker 1: having saluted Ali of Cairo with a salaam, asked him
[0:44] Speaker 1: the reason of his enchantment and what had befallen him,
[0:48] Speaker 1: And he answered by telling him all that had passed.
[0:51] Speaker 1: When the broker said to him, will not my daughter
[0:54] Speaker 1: and the handmaids suffice thee? But he answered, needs mis
[0:59] Speaker 1: thy have zai ABLESO? Now suddenly there came a rap
[1:03] Speaker 1: at the door, and the maid said, who is at
[1:06] Speaker 1: the door. The knocker replied, Kama, daughter of Azarayah. The
[1:11] Speaker 1: Jew say, me, is Ali of Cairo with you? Replied
[1:16] Speaker 1: the broker's daughter, O, thou daughter of a dog? If
[1:20] Speaker 1: he be with us, what wilt thou with him, go down,
[1:24] Speaker 1: o maid, and open to her. So the maid let
[1:27] Speaker 1: her in. And when she looked upon Ali, and he
[1:30] Speaker 1: upon her, he said, what bringeth thee hither, O dog's daughter?
[1:35] Speaker 1: Quoth she, I testify that there is no God but
[1:39] Speaker 1: the God, and I testify that Mohammed is the apostle
[1:43] Speaker 1: of God. And having thus islamized, she asked him, two
[1:48] Speaker 1: men in the faith of al Islam give marriage portions
[1:51] Speaker 1: to women? Or two women? Thou are men, quoth he men?
[1:56] Speaker 1: And thy women? Then said she I endower myself for THEE,
[2:02] Speaker 1: bringing THEE as my marriage portion, my dress, together with
[2:06] Speaker 1: the wrath and charger and chains, and the head of
[2:08] Speaker 1: my father, the enemy of Thee, and the foeman of Allah.
[2:13] Speaker 1: And she threw down the Jew's head before him. Now
[2:18] Speaker 1: the cause of her slaying her sire was as follows.
[2:21] Speaker 1: On the night of his turning Ali into a dog,
[2:24] Speaker 1: she saw in a dream a speaker who said to her,
[2:27] Speaker 1: become a moslemer. She did so, and as soon as
[2:31] Speaker 1: she awoke next morning, she expounded Ali slam to her father,
[2:35] Speaker 1: who refused to embrace the faith. So she drog them
[2:39] Speaker 1: with bang and killed him. As for Ali, he took
[2:44] Speaker 1: the gear and said to the broker, metweat to morrow
[2:47] Speaker 1: at the Caliph's divan, that I may take thy daughter
[2:51] Speaker 1: and a handmaid to wife. Then he sat out, rejoicing
[2:55] Speaker 1: to return to the barrack of the forty. On his
[2:59] Speaker 1: way he might as sweet meat Cella, who was beating
[3:01] Speaker 1: hand upon hand and saying, there is no majesty and
[3:05] Speaker 1: there is no mind saving Allah the glorious, The great
[3:10] Speaker 1: folk's labor hath waxed sinful, and man is active only fraud.
[3:16] Speaker 1: Then he said he to Ali, I come to thee
[3:19] Speaker 1: by Allah, taste of this confection. So Ali took a
[3:23] Speaker 1: piece and ate it, and fell down senseless, for there
[3:27] Speaker 1: was bang therein. Whereupon the sweetmeat seller seized the dress
[3:31] Speaker 1: and the charger and the rest of the gear, and
[3:34] Speaker 1: thrusting them into the box where he kept his sweetmeats,
[3:37] Speaker 1: hoisted it up and made off. Presently he met a
[3:41] Speaker 1: kazi who called to him, saying, come hither, or sweetmeat cellar.
[3:46] Speaker 1: So he went up to him, and, setting down his sack,
[3:49] Speaker 1: laid the tray of sweetmeats upon it, and asked what
[3:52] Speaker 1: dost thou want? Haloi and ragets answered the kazi and
[3:58] Speaker 1: taking some in his hands, said, both of these are adulterated.
[4:03] Speaker 1: Then he brought out sweetmeats from his breast pocket and
[4:06] Speaker 1: gave them to the sweetmeat cellar, saying, look at this fashion,
[4:10] Speaker 1: how excellent it is. Eat of it and make the
[4:14] Speaker 1: like of it. So he ate and fell down senseless,
[4:18] Speaker 1: for the sweetmeats were drug with bang. Whereupon the Kazi
[4:22] Speaker 1: bundled him into the sack and made off with them
[4:25] Speaker 1: charger and chest and all to the barrack of the forte.
[4:29] Speaker 1: Now the judging question was Hassan Schumann, and the reason
[4:33] Speaker 1: of this was as follows. When Ali had been gone
[4:36] Speaker 1: some days in quest of the dress, and they heard
[4:38] Speaker 1: no news of him, Calamity Ahmad said to his men, O, lads,
[4:43] Speaker 1: go and seek for your brother Ali of Cairo. So
[4:47] Speaker 1: they sallied forth in quest of them, and among the
[4:50] Speaker 1: rest Hazzan Schumann the pestilence. Disguising a Kazi skire. He
[4:55] Speaker 1: came upon the sweetmeat cellar, and, knowing him for Ahmad
[4:58] Speaker 1: al la Kit, suspected him of having played some trick
[5:02] Speaker 1: upon Ali. So he drugged them and did as we
[5:05] Speaker 1: have seen. Meanwhile, the other forty fared about the streets
[5:10] Speaker 1: and highways, making search in different directions, and amongst them
[5:14] Speaker 1: Ali kit val Jamal, who was spying a crowd, made
[5:18] Speaker 1: towards the people and found the cairene Ali lying drugged
[5:21] Speaker 1: and senseless in their midst. So he revived them, and
[5:25] Speaker 1: he came to himself, and seeing the folk flocking around him,
[5:29] Speaker 1: asked where am I answered, Ali camel's shoulder and his comrades.
[5:34] Speaker 1: We found thee lying hair drugged, but know not who
[5:38] Speaker 1: drug thee quoth Ali. Twas a certain sweetmeat seller who
[5:43] Speaker 1: drugged me and took the gear from me. But where
[5:45] Speaker 1: is he gone? Quothing his comrades, We have seen nothing
[5:49] Speaker 1: of them. But come rise and go home with us.
[5:54] Speaker 1: So they returned to the barrack, where they found Ahmad
[5:57] Speaker 1: al Danav, who greeted Ali and inquired if he had
[6:00] Speaker 1: brought the dress. He replied, I was coming hither with
[6:04] Speaker 1: it and other matters included a jew's head. When a
[6:07] Speaker 1: sweetmeat seller met me and drugged me with bang and
[6:10] Speaker 1: took them from me. Then he told him the whole tale,
[6:14] Speaker 1: ending with if I come across that man of goodies again,
[6:17] Speaker 1: I will requite him. Presently, Hassan Schumann came out of
[6:22] Speaker 1: a closet and said to him, hast thou got in
[6:25] Speaker 1: the gear? O Ali? So he told him what had
[6:28] Speaker 1: befallen him, and added, if I know whither the rascal
[6:31] Speaker 1: is gone, and where to find the knave, I would
[6:34] Speaker 1: pay him out. Knowest thou whither he went? Answered Hassan,
[6:39] Speaker 1: I know where he is, and opening the door of
[6:42] Speaker 1: the closet, showed him the sweetmeat cella within, drugged and senseless.
[6:47] Speaker 1: Then he aroused them, and he opened his eyes, and
[6:50] Speaker 1: finding himself in presence of mercury, Ali and calamity, Akhmad
[6:54] Speaker 1: and the forty started up and said where am i?
[6:57] Speaker 1: And who hath laid hands on me? Replied Schumann, twas
[7:02] Speaker 1: I laid hands on thee. And Ali cried, O, perfidious wretch,
[7:07] Speaker 1: wilt thou play thy pranks on me? And he would
[7:10] Speaker 1: have slain him, But Hassan said to him, hold thy hand,
[7:14] Speaker 1: for this fellow is become thy kinsman. How my kinsman,
[7:19] Speaker 1: quoth Ali, And quoth Hassan, this is Ahmad Alakid, son
[7:24] Speaker 1: of thine AB's sister. Then said Ali to the prisoner,
[7:28] Speaker 1: why didst thou thus o la kit? And he replied,
[7:32] Speaker 1: my grandmother the Lilah de Wili bade me do it
[7:37] Speaker 1: only because Zuraik, the fishmonger, foregathered with the old woman
[7:40] Speaker 1: and said, mercury Aali of Cairo is a sharper and
[7:44] Speaker 1: a past master in knavery, and he wilt certainly slay
[7:47] Speaker 1: the Jew and bring hither the dress. So she sent
[7:51] Speaker 1: for me and said to me, o, Ahmad, dost thou know?
[7:55] Speaker 1: Ali of Cairo, answered I, indeed I do, And twas
[7:59] Speaker 1: I directed him to Ahmad Aaldanov's lodging when he first
[8:02] Speaker 1: came to Baghdad. Quoth she go and set thine nets
[8:07] Speaker 1: for him, and if he have brought back the gear,
[8:09] Speaker 1: put a sheet on him and take it from him.
[8:13] Speaker 1: So I went round about the highways of the city
[8:16] Speaker 1: till I met a sweetmeat cellar, and, buying his clothes
[8:19] Speaker 1: and stock in trade and gear for ten in hours,
[8:21] Speaker 1: did what was done. Thereupon, quoth Ali go back to
[8:26] Speaker 1: thy grandmother and Zuraik, and tell them that I have
[8:29] Speaker 1: brought the gear and the Jew's head, and tell them
[8:32] Speaker 1: to meet me to morrow at the Caliph's divan there
[8:34] Speaker 1: to receive thine arm's dowry and calamity. Ahmad rejoiced in
[8:39] Speaker 1: this and said, we have not wasted our pains in
[8:42] Speaker 1: rearing thee o Ali. Next morning, Ali took the dress,
[8:46] Speaker 1: the charger, the rod, and the chains of gold, together
[8:49] Speaker 1: with the head of Azarayah the jew mounted on a pike,
[8:52] Speaker 1: and went up, accompanied by Ahmad Aaldanav and the forty
[8:56] Speaker 1: to the divan with a kiss ground before the Caliph
[9:00] Speaker 1: and Shahrazad perceived the dawn of day and ceased, saying
[9:04] Speaker 1: her permitted say when it was the seven hundred and
[9:11] Speaker 1: nineteenth night. She said, it hath reached me o auspicious king,
[9:17] Speaker 1: that when Ali the Cairine went up to the Caliph's
[9:20] Speaker 1: divan accompanied by his uncle Ahmad al Danav and his lads,
[9:24] Speaker 1: they kissed ground before the Caliph, who turned and, seeing
[9:28] Speaker 1: a youth of the most valiant aspect, inquired of calamity
[9:31] Speaker 1: Ahmad concerning him, and he replied, O, Commander of the Faithful,
[9:36] Speaker 1: this is Mercury Ali, the Egyptian captain of the brave
[9:39] Speaker 1: boys of Cairo, and he is the first of my lads.
[9:43] Speaker 1: And the Caliph loved him for the valor that shone
[9:46] Speaker 1: from between his eyes, testifying for him, and nought against him.
[9:51] Speaker 1: Then Ali rose, and, casting the Jew's head down before him, said,
[9:56] Speaker 1: may thine every enemy be like this one, O prince
[9:59] Speaker 1: of true believers, quoth a rashid whose head is this?
[10:05] Speaker 1: And quoth Ali tis the head of Azara'ah. The Jew
[10:09] Speaker 1: who slew him, asked the Caliph. So Ali related to
[10:13] Speaker 1: him all that that passed from first to last, And
[10:16] Speaker 1: the Caliph said, I had not thought thou wouldst kill him,
[10:21] Speaker 1: for that he was a sorcerer. Ali replied, O, Commander
[10:26] Speaker 1: of the Faithful, my Lord made me prevail to his laughter.
[10:30] Speaker 1: Then the Caliph sent the chief of police to the
[10:33] Speaker 1: Jew's palace, where he found him lying headless. So he
[10:36] Speaker 1: laid the body on a bier and carried it to
[10:39] Speaker 1: a rashid, who commanded to burn it. Whereat behold. Ab
[10:44] Speaker 1: came Kamar, and, kissing the ground before the Caliph, informed
[10:47] Speaker 1: him that she was the daughter of Jew Azara'ah and
[10:50] Speaker 1: that she had become a moslemer. Then she renewed her
[10:54] Speaker 1: profession of faith before the Commander of the Faithful and
[10:58] Speaker 1: said to him, be thou maid intercessor with Chapar Ali,
[11:02] Speaker 1: that he take me to wife. She also appointed him
[11:05] Speaker 1: her guardian to consent to her marriage with the Cairine,
[11:09] Speaker 1: to whom he gave the Jew's palace and all its contents, saying,
[11:13] Speaker 1: ask a boon of me, quoth Ali, I beg of
[11:17] Speaker 1: thee to let me stand on thy carpet and eat
[11:20] Speaker 1: of thy table. And quoth the Caliph, O Ali hast
[11:24] Speaker 1: thou any lads, He replied, I have forty lads, but
[11:27] Speaker 1: they are in Cairo. Rejoined the Caliph, Send to Cairo
[11:32] Speaker 1: and fetch them hither, presently, adding but O Ali hast
[11:36] Speaker 1: thou a barrack for them? No, answered Ali, and Hassan
[11:40] Speaker 1: Schumann said, I may him a present of my barrack,
[11:44] Speaker 1: with all that is the ren O commander of the faithful. However,
[11:48] Speaker 1: the Caliph retorted, saying, thy lodging is thine own, o Hassan.
[11:53] Speaker 1: And he bade his treasurer give the court architect ten
[11:56] Speaker 1: thousand dinars that he might build Ali a hall with
[12:00] Speaker 1: dayes and forty sleeping closets for his lads. Then said he, Oh,
[12:06] Speaker 1: Ali hast thou any further, wish that we may command
[12:09] Speaker 1: its fulfillment. And said Ali, O king of the Age,
[12:13] Speaker 1: be thou my intercessor with Delilah de Wilie that she
[12:16] Speaker 1: gave me her daughter Zainab to wife and take the
[12:19] Speaker 1: dress and gear of Azarayah's girl in lieu of Dawa.
[12:25] Speaker 1: Tlilah accepted the Caliph's intercession and accept the charger and
[12:28] Speaker 1: dress and what not, and they drew up the marriage
[12:31] Speaker 1: contracts between Ali and Zinap and Kamar, the Jew's daughter
[12:35] Speaker 1: and the broker's daughter and the handmaid. Moreover, the Caliph
[12:39] Speaker 1: assigned him assault with a table morning and evening, and
[12:43] Speaker 1: stipens and allowances for fodder, all of the most liberal.
[12:48] Speaker 1: Then Ali de Cairine fell to make him ready for
[12:51] Speaker 1: the wedding festivities. And after thirty days he sent a
[12:54] Speaker 1: letter to his comrades in Cairo, wherein he gave them
[12:57] Speaker 1: to know the favors and honors which the Caliph had
[13:00] Speaker 1: bestowed upon him, and said, I have married four maidens,
[13:04] Speaker 1: and needs must he come to the wedding. So after
[13:08] Speaker 1: a reasonable time the forty lads arrived, and they held
[13:11] Speaker 1: high festival. He honed them in his barrack and entreated
[13:15] Speaker 1: them with the utmost regard, and presented them to the Caliph,
[13:19] Speaker 1: who bestowed on them robes of honor and largesse. Then
[13:23] Speaker 1: the tiring women displayed Zigna before Ali in the dress
[13:26] Speaker 1: of the Jew's daughter, and he went in unto her
[13:29] Speaker 1: and founded a pearl and thridden and a philly by
[13:32] Speaker 1: all save himself unridden. Then he went in andto the
[13:37] Speaker 1: three other maidens, and found them accomplished in beauty and loveliness.
[13:43] Speaker 1: After this it befel that Ali of Cairo was one
[13:46] Speaker 1: night on guard by the Caliph, who said to him,
[13:50] Speaker 1: I wish Thee o Ali to tell me all that
[13:52] Speaker 1: hath befallen thee from first to last, with the Lailah
[13:56] Speaker 1: de Waili, and Zina the Konicatcha, and Zuraik the fisher.
[14:01] Speaker 1: So Ali related to him all his adventures, and the
[14:04] Speaker 1: commander of the Faithful bade recall them and laid them
[14:07] Speaker 1: up in the royal mouniment rooms. So they wrote down
[14:11] Speaker 1: all that had befallen him and kept it in store
[14:14] Speaker 1: with other histories for the people of Mohammed. The best
[14:16] Speaker 1: of men, and Dli and his wives and comrades abode
[14:21] Speaker 1: in all solace of life and his giants till they
[14:24] Speaker 1: came to them, the destroyer of delights and sunderer of societies,
[14:29] Speaker 1: and Allah be he extolled and Exalted is all knowing,
[14:35] Speaker 1: and also men relate the tale of Ardasher and Hai'at
[14:39] Speaker 1: al Nufus. There was once in the city of Shiraz
[14:44] Speaker 1: a miter king called Saif al Ahazam Shah, who had
[14:48] Speaker 1: grown old without being blessed with a son. So he
[14:52] Speaker 1: summoned the physicists and physicians and said to them, I
[14:56] Speaker 1: am now in years, and ye know my case and
[14:59] Speaker 1: the state the kingdom and its ordinance. And I fear
[15:02] Speaker 1: for my subjects after me, for thou up to this
[15:06] Speaker 1: present I have not been vouchsafed a son. Thereupon they replied,
[15:12] Speaker 1: we will compound thee as somewhat of drugs, wherein shall
[15:15] Speaker 1: be efficacy, if it please Almighty Allah. So they mixed
[15:21] Speaker 1: them drugs, which he used and knew His wife Carnalie,
[15:25] Speaker 1: and she conceived by leave of the most high Lord
[15:28] Speaker 1: who saith to a thing be, and it becometh. When
[15:33] Speaker 1: her months were accomplished, she gave birth to a male
[15:36] Speaker 1: child like the moon, whom his father named Ardasher. And
[15:41] Speaker 1: he grew up and throve and applied himself to the
[15:44] Speaker 1: study of learning and letters till he attained the age
[15:47] Speaker 1: of fifteen. Now there was in Alirak, a king called
[15:53] Speaker 1: Abdal Kadir, who had a daughter by name Hayat al Nufus,
[15:57] Speaker 1: and she was like the rising full moon. But she
[16:00] Speaker 1: had a hatredful man, and the folk very hardly dead
[16:04] Speaker 1: name mankind in a presence. The kings of the Cusroys
[16:09] Speaker 1: had sought her in marriage of a sire, but when
[16:12] Speaker 1: he spoke with her thereof, she said, never will I
[16:16] Speaker 1: do this, and if thou force me there too, I
[16:19] Speaker 1: will slay myself. Now Prince Adashir heard of her fame
[16:25] Speaker 1: and fell in love with her and told his father, who,
[16:28] Speaker 1: seeing his case, took pity on him and promised him
[16:31] Speaker 1: day by day that he should marry her. So he
[16:35] Speaker 1: despatches Wazir to demand her in Wedgelock, but King abdal
[16:39] Speaker 1: Kadir refused, And when the minister returned to King saiyfh
[16:43] Speaker 1: ala Asam and acquainted him with what had befallen his
[16:46] Speaker 1: mission and the failure thereof, he was wroth with exceeding
[16:50] Speaker 1: wrath and cried, shalt the like of me send to
[16:53] Speaker 1: one of the kings on her acquisition, and he accomplished it.
[16:56] Speaker 1: Not then he bade a herald make proclamation to his troops,
[17:02] Speaker 1: bidden them bring out the tents and equip them for
[17:04] Speaker 1: war with all diligence, though they should borrow money for
[17:07] Speaker 1: the necessary expenses. And he said, I will on no
[17:11] Speaker 1: wise turn back till I have late ways King AaB
[17:14] Speaker 1: dal Kadir's dominions and slain his men and blundered his
[17:19] Speaker 1: treasures and blotted out his traces. When the report of
[17:24] Speaker 1: this reached Adashir, he rose from his carpet bed, and
[17:27] Speaker 1: going in to his father, kissed ground between his hands
[17:30] Speaker 1: and said, ohmy King, trouble not thyself with aught of
[17:34] Speaker 1: this thing. And Shahrazad perceived the dawn of day and
[17:39] Speaker 1: ceased to say her permitted say. When it was the
[17:45] Speaker 1: seven hundred and twentieth night, she continued it hath reached me,
[17:51] Speaker 1: O auspicious King, that when report of this reached the prince,
[17:55] Speaker 1: he went in to his sire the King, and kissing
[17:58] Speaker 1: ground between his hands, said, O, mighty King, trouble not
[18:02] Speaker 1: thy soul with aught of this thing. And levy not
[18:05] Speaker 1: thy champions and armies, neither spend thy moneys. Thou art
[18:10] Speaker 1: stronger than he, And if thou lose upon him this
[18:14] Speaker 1: thy host, thou wilt lay waste his cities and dominions,
[18:18] Speaker 1: and spoil his good, and slay his strong man and himself.
[18:23] Speaker 1: But when his daughter shall come to know what hath
[18:25] Speaker 1: befallen her father and his people by reason of her,
[18:28] Speaker 1: she will slay herself, and I shall die on her account,
[18:32] Speaker 1: for I can never live after her. No, never asked
[18:37] Speaker 1: the king, and what then thinkest thou to do, o
[18:40] Speaker 1: my son? And the Prince answered, I will don a
[18:44] Speaker 1: merchant's habit, and cast about how I may win to
[18:47] Speaker 1: the princess and compass my desire of her. Quoth Syphala
[18:52] Speaker 1: assam art Thou determined upon this, and quoth the Prince, yes, o,
[18:58] Speaker 1: my sire. Whereupon the King called to his Wazir and
[19:02] Speaker 1: said to him, do thou journey with my son the
[19:05] Speaker 1: core of my heart, and help him to win his well,
[19:09] Speaker 1: and watch over him and guide him with thy sound judgment.
[19:13] Speaker 1: For thou standest to him even in my stead. I
[19:18] Speaker 1: hear and obey, answered the minister, And the King gave
[19:22] Speaker 1: his son three hundred thousand dinars in gold, and great
[19:25] Speaker 1: store of jewels and precious stones, and goldsmiths, war and
[19:28] Speaker 1: stuffs and other things of price. Then Prince Adasher went
[19:33] Speaker 1: in to his mother and kissed the hands and asked
[19:36] Speaker 1: the blessing. She blessed them, and forthright opening her treasures,
[19:41] Speaker 1: brought out to him necklaces and trinkets, and apparel, and
[19:45] Speaker 1: all manner of other costly objects halted up from the
[19:48] Speaker 1: time of the bygone kings, whose price may not be
[19:51] Speaker 1: even with coin. Moreover, he took with him of his
[19:56] Speaker 1: mameluks and Negro slaves and cattle, all that he needed
[19:59] Speaker 1: for the road, and clad himself in the wazir, and
[20:02] Speaker 1: the company in trader's gear. Then he fell wealthy parents
[20:07] Speaker 1: and kinsfolk and friends, and setting out fared on over
[20:11] Speaker 1: walls and wastes, all hours of the day and watches
[20:14] Speaker 1: of the night. And when as the way was long
[20:17] Speaker 1: sum upon him, he improvides these couplets, My longing bread
[20:23] Speaker 1: of love with minor knees forever grows, nor against all
[20:28] Speaker 1: the wrongs of time. One succorer arose, when players and
[20:33] Speaker 1: the fishes showing the sky the rise, I watch, as worshiper,
[20:38] Speaker 1: within whose breast a pious burning clothes for star or morn,
[20:43] Speaker 1: I spear, until at last, when it is seen, I
[20:47] Speaker 1: mat it with my passion and my fancy swoes and throws.
[20:51] Speaker 1: I swear by you that never from your love have
[20:54] Speaker 1: I been loosed, nor tom I save a watcher who
[20:59] Speaker 1: have slumbered. Nothing knows, though hart appear, my hope to win,
[21:05] Speaker 1: though languor eye increase, and after thee my patience fails,
[21:10] Speaker 1: and ne'er a helper shows. Yet will I wait till
[21:14] Speaker 1: Allah shall be pleased to join our loves. I'll mortify
[21:18] Speaker 1: the jealous, and I'll mock me of my foes. When
[21:22] Speaker 1: he entered his verse, he swooned away, and the wazir
[21:25] Speaker 1: sprinkle rose water on him, till the prince came to himself,
[21:29] Speaker 1: when the minister said to him, O King's son possessed
[21:33] Speaker 1: thy soul in patience, for the consequence of patience is consolation.
[21:38] Speaker 1: And behold thou art on the way to whatso thou wishest.
[21:44] Speaker 1: And he ceased not to be speaking fair and comfort
[21:47] Speaker 1: him till his trouble subsided, and they continued their journey
[21:50] Speaker 1: with all diligence. Presently, the prince again became impatient of
[21:55] Speaker 1: the length of the way, and bethought him of his
[21:58] Speaker 1: beloved and recited couplets longsome his absence, restlessness increaseth and
[22:06] Speaker 1: despite and burn my vitals in the blaze my love longing.
[22:11] Speaker 1: Slight grows my hair gray from pains and pangs which
[22:16] Speaker 1: I am doomed to bear for pine, while tear flirts
[22:20] Speaker 1: stream from my eyes and soar offend my sight. I
[22:25] Speaker 1: swear O hope of me, O end of every wish
[22:28] Speaker 1: and will by him who made mankind and every branch
[22:32] Speaker 1: with leafage dight, a passion loath for thee O my desire,
[22:37] Speaker 1: I must endure, and both ste that to bear such load,
[22:41] Speaker 1: no lover hath the might question the night of me,
[22:46] Speaker 1: and NEI thy soul shall satisfy mine. Eyelids never close
[22:51] Speaker 1: in sleep throughout the livelong night. Then he wept with
[22:57] Speaker 1: sore weeping and plaint of that he suffered for dress
[23:00] Speaker 1: of love longing. But there was here comfort to him,
[23:03] Speaker 1: and spoke him fair, promising him the winning of his wish,
[23:08] Speaker 1: after which they fared on again for a few days.
[23:11] Speaker 1: When they drew near to the White City, the capital
[23:14] Speaker 1: of King abdal Kadir, soon after sunrise. Then said the
[23:19] Speaker 1: minister to the Prince, rejoice, O King's son in all good,
[23:23] Speaker 1: for see yonder is the white city that which thou
[23:26] Speaker 1: seekest whereat. The Prince rejoiced with exceeding joy and recited
[23:32] Speaker 1: these couplets. My friends are yearning, heart distraught for him,
[23:38] Speaker 1: longing abides, and we sore pains a brim. I mourn
[23:42] Speaker 1: like childless mother, Nor can find one to console me
[23:46] Speaker 1: when the light grows dim. Yet when the breezes blow
[23:50] Speaker 1: from off thy land, I feel the freshness shed on
[23:53] Speaker 1: heart and limb, and railed mine eyes like water laden clouds.
[23:59] Speaker 1: While in a t s c sheard by heart, I
[24:02] Speaker 1: swim now. When they entered the White city, they asked
[24:07] Speaker 1: for the merchant's khan, a place of moneyed men, and
[24:10] Speaker 1: when shown the hostelry, they had three magazines, and on
[24:14] Speaker 1: receiving the keys, they laid up the rain all their
[24:17] Speaker 1: goods than gere. They abode in the khan till they
[24:21] Speaker 1: were rested. When the Wazir applied himself to devise a
[24:24] Speaker 1: device for the Prince, and Shahrazad perceived the dawn of
[24:28] Speaker 1: day and ceased saying her permitted say. End of section
[24:34] Speaker 1: twenty eight. Recording by Ali Chinji Riska, South Wales, United
