Fibber McGee and Molly presents “Reward for a Noble Deed,” episode 725 of the classic radio comedy, originally broadcast March 17, 1953. This late-era NBC broadcast was sponsored by Reynolds Aluminum. Fibber receives a message from an unfamiliar man offering to reward him for a supposedly noble deed, leaving him to puzzle over the unexpected recognition. Jim Jordan stars as Fibber McGee, with Arthur Q. Bryan, Bill Thompson, and Harlow Wilcox among the featured performers. Marian Jordan was ill, so Molly does not appear in this broadcast. Fibber McGee and Molly presents the original broadcast with a newly produced contextual introduction, a short closing announcement, and gently cleaned/mastered audio for a more consistent listening experience. ## Transcript

[0:00] Speaker 1: An unfamiliar man sends Fibber McGee a message. He intends
[0:03] Speaker 1: to reward Fibber for what he calls a noble deed.
[0:07] Speaker 1: That unexplained offer sets Fibber puzzling over just what recognition
[0:11] Speaker 1: he has earned as we raise the curtain on Fibber
[0:13] Speaker 1: McGee and Molly. Reward for a noble deed, episode number 725,
[0:17] Speaker 1: heard over NBC on March 17th, 1953. Jim Jordan is
[0:20] Speaker 1: on hand as Fibber. Marion Jordan is absent from this
[0:28] Speaker 1: broadcast because of illness. The supporting company includes Arthur Q. Bryan,
[0:33] Speaker 1: Bill Thompson, Cliff Arquette, Elvia Allman, Mary Jane Croft, John McIntyre,
[0:40] Speaker 1: and Harlow Wilcox, with Billy Mills and his orchestra and
[0:44] Speaker 1: the King's Men. The script is by Keith Fowler and
[0:48] Speaker 1: Phil Leslie under Max Hutto's direction. And now, our story begins.
[0:55] Speaker 2: The Reynolds Aluminum Program with Fibber McGee and Molly. The
[1:06] Speaker 2: Reynolds Metals Company, makers of Reynolds Aluminum, presents the Fibber
[1:09] Speaker 2: McGee and Molly Show Transcribed.
[1:11] Speaker 3: Molly will not be with us this week. She has
[1:13] Speaker 3: the flu.
[1:14] Speaker 2: Tonight's program is written by Phil Leslie and Keith Fowler
[1:16] Speaker 2: and directed by Max Hutto with music by the.
[1:19] Speaker 3: King's Men and Billy Mills Orchestra. Thank you.
[1:41] Speaker 2: Farmers, you can put a two-way stretch on your farm
[1:44] Speaker 2: profits by building with Reynolds Lifetime Aluminum roofing and siding.
[1:49] Speaker 2: You stretch income up because heat reflecting aluminum keeps poultry
[1:53] Speaker 2: and livestock cooler in summer, warmer in winter, definitely increasing
[1:57] Speaker 2: milk yield, egg production, and weight gain.
[2:00] Speaker 3: And then you push.
[2:01] Speaker 2: Costs down because Reynolds Lifetime Aluminum never rusts, never needs painting,
[2:06] Speaker 2: lasts a lifetime. Aluminum has inspired new, practical, low-cost methods
[2:12] Speaker 2: of farm building, developed particularly by Reynolds Farm Institute. Recent
[2:17] Speaker 2: examples are a new poultry range shelter and a new
[2:21] Speaker 2: pole frame barn. Actual working plans carry a nominal charge,
[2:26] Speaker 2: but Reynolds Farm Institute will be glad to send you
[2:28] Speaker 2: free descriptive literature on both the range shelter and the barn.
[2:33] Speaker 2: Just address a postcard to Reynolds Farm Buildings, Louisville 1, Kentucky.
[2:39] Speaker 2: That's Reynolds Farm Buildings, Louisville 1, Kentucky. Well, the old
[2:53] Speaker 2: flu bug bit Mrs. Molly McGee this week, and she's
[2:56] Speaker 2: home in bed right now taking things easy. And here,
[3:00] Speaker 2: walking down 14th Street and telling Mr. Wimple all about it,
[3:06] Speaker 2: is Mr. McGee of Philly McGee and Molly.
[3:16] Speaker 4: And like I was telling Doc Gamble, Wimple, when Molly's sick,
[3:19] Speaker 4: the whole house just kind of goes to pot.
[3:22] Speaker 5: What do you do when your wife is sick, Wimple?
[3:24] Speaker 4: Well, you see, I run and hide in the attic.
[3:30] Speaker 3: Oh, she gets so close. Yeah.
[3:33] Speaker 4: Well, me being the type of guy that he always
[3:34] Speaker 4: follows my wife when she's sick, I've been doing everything
[3:36] Speaker 4: for Molly. I've been just waiting on her hand and hoof.
[3:40] Speaker 3: Hand and hoof? Yep.
[3:41] Speaker 4: I've been hoofing up the stairs to hand her something
[3:43] Speaker 4: every five minutes. I ran upstairs with the orange juice,
[3:47] Speaker 4: and then I run up there with the hot chocolate,
[3:49] Speaker 4: and then I ran up there with the mop.
[3:50] Speaker 3: The mop?
[3:51] Speaker 4: Hot chocolate all the way up the steps. Oh. What
[3:55] Speaker 4: happened was, Doc Gamble left his satchel sitting in the
[3:57] Speaker 4: front hall, see? And I run clean up to the
[3:59] Speaker 4: first landing before I realized I was wearing it on
[4:02] Speaker 4: my right foot like an overshoe.
[4:04] Speaker 5: My goodness.
[4:05] Speaker 4: What did the doctor say? Can you repeat it out
[4:08] Speaker 4: in the street like this?
[4:09] Speaker 5: He was sitting out in the kitchen drinking coffee, and he... Oh,
[4:12] Speaker 5: wait a minute. Here comes Mabel Toops.
[4:14] Speaker 3: Hi, Fred.
[4:15] Speaker 5: Hi, Maeve.
[4:16] Speaker 2: How's Ma?
[4:16] Speaker 3: Fine. Good. How's Mort? Same. Good?
[4:19] Speaker 4: Lousy.
[4:19] Speaker 2: Oh.
[4:20] Speaker 6: Bye, Maeve.
[4:21] Speaker 5: Bye, Maeve. Mort Toops' wife.
[4:28] Speaker 3: I never speak to her.
[4:30] Speaker 5: You never speak to her? Why not?
[4:32] Speaker 3: I've never met her.
[4:33] Speaker 7: Oh.
[4:36] Speaker 4: Well, anyhow, while Doc was having his coffee, I ran
[4:38] Speaker 4: upstairs again to wake Molly up and ask her if
[4:40] Speaker 4: she wanted me to do anything for her. And, you know,
[4:41] Speaker 4: like sing to her or play her a game of
[4:43] Speaker 4: checkers or something or anything.
[4:44] Speaker 3: You woke her up just to say that? Why, certainly.
[4:47] Speaker 5: She couldn't have answered me if I hadn't woken her up,
[4:48] Speaker 5: could she? It's a good thing you aren't me. What
[4:53] Speaker 5: do you mean?
[4:53] Speaker 4: I remember one time I woke up my wife, and
[4:56] Speaker 4: two days later I woke up. In the coal bin.
[5:00] Speaker 4: My head had more knots than 40.
[5:03] Speaker 5: Feet of pickled pine.
[5:04] Speaker 4: Well, anyhow, old Doc got worried about me wearing myself
[5:08] Speaker 4: out waiting on Molly so much, I guess.
[5:09] Speaker 5: Only kind of because he said what I ought to
[5:11] Speaker 5: do is get out of the house a while. You know,
[5:13] Speaker 5: get some air. So, come on in Kramer's Drugstore with me,
[5:16] Speaker 5: will you?
[5:17] Speaker 3: All right.
[5:19] Speaker 4: I want to see if the April issue of the
[5:20] Speaker 4: Birdwatch is journaled in anyhow.
[5:22] Speaker 3: There's an article... Hey, hold it a minute. Hold it
[5:24] Speaker 3: a minute.
[5:25] Speaker 5: I want to check the phone booth.
[5:26] Speaker 3: What is he trying to do? Hey, look at this, Wim.
[5:30] Speaker 5: I found a nickel.
[5:31] Speaker 3: Two nickels.
[5:32] Speaker 2: Mr.
[5:32] Speaker 4: McGee, you think of the darndest.
[5:36] Speaker 3: What's the matter?
[5:37] Speaker 4: They're slugs. Of all the dirty tricks. I ought to
[5:42] Speaker 4: report this joint to the Better Business Bureau.
[5:45] Speaker 5: Hey, wait a minute. Maybe they'll work in the pinball machine.
[5:53] Speaker 3: You shouldn't do that, should you?
[5:55] Speaker 6: Mr.
[5:55] Speaker 5: Kramer would like... He can't see what I'm using.
[5:57] Speaker 3: He's way in the back there.
[6:00] Speaker 5: Well, goes in the slot all right.
[6:02] Speaker 3: Hey, look. Lights are starting to flash already. Hey. Slugs.
[6:07] Speaker 5: Slugs.
[6:08] Speaker 3: Slugs. Slugs. Slugs.
[6:16] Speaker 2: Hey.
[6:18] Speaker 5: My God.
[6:18] Speaker 3: Hey, what the.
[6:19] Speaker 5: Holy smoke.
[6:20] Speaker 3: Pull the cord out. Pull the cord out.
[6:21] Speaker 6: I'm afraid they'll hit me.
[6:22] Speaker 3: Pull it out. Dead ratted monster. If that ain't the.
[6:34] Speaker 5: Surprised you, didn't I, McGee?
[6:36] Speaker 3: I told him not to use slugs, Mr.
[6:38] Speaker 6: Kramer.
[6:38] Speaker 5: My gosh, Kramer.
[6:39] Speaker 3: What the heck kind of a way is that to
[6:41] Speaker 3: treat a customer? It's all right, folks.
[6:43] Speaker 5: Just McGee trying to slug the pinball machine.
[6:46] Speaker 8: Okay.
[6:49] Speaker 3: Friend of mine in electronics lab picks that up for me, McGee.
[6:52] Speaker 3: I've been expecting you. Oh, yeah?
[6:58] Speaker 4: By George, I got a good notion to sue you, Kramer.
[7:01] Speaker 4: A guy that's supposed to be a businessman and rigs up.
[7:03] Speaker 3: A dad-ratted booby trap. Caught one, too.
[7:10] Speaker 5: Very funny. I thought so, too, Mr.
[7:12] Speaker 2: Kramer.
[7:13] Speaker 3: Shut up, Wimple.
[7:16] Speaker 4: I come in here to buy my wife a present, Kramer.
[7:19] Speaker 4: But by George, I may just take my business someplace else.
[7:22] Speaker 5: Oh, no, McGee.
[7:24] Speaker 3: Surely you just.
[7:25] Speaker 1: Oh, yeah?
[7:27] Speaker 5: Well, you just wait and see.
[7:30] Speaker 4: That's a cute one.
[7:31] Speaker 5: Shut up, Wimple. My goodness, I'll go get a magazine
[7:36] Speaker 5: and go home because nobody likes me.
[7:41] Speaker 4: I wouldn't spend a nickel in here anyhow, Kramer, if
[7:43] Speaker 4: I could get credit anyplace else.
[7:45] Speaker 5: And you know it.
[7:46] Speaker 2: Well, before you stalk out of here, and I've never
[7:49] Speaker 2: seen you leave any other way, I've got a message
[7:51] Speaker 2: for you.
[7:52] Speaker 5: My wife took a phone call for you a while ago.
[7:54] Speaker 5: Phone call? For me?
[7:55] Speaker 3: Who was it, Molly? Was it Molly?
[7:56] Speaker 5: No, it wasn't your wife.
[7:57] Speaker 4: Oh.
[7:58] Speaker 3: Some man. Said he was a friend of yours. The
[8:00] Speaker 3: silly idiot.
[8:02] Speaker 5: Here, it's written down. Let me see.
[8:06] Speaker 4: Will you meet me at the barn town at noon?
[8:10] Speaker 4: Want to express my appreciation for your noble deed.
[8:13] Speaker 3: Huh?
[8:15] Speaker 5: Me?
[8:16] Speaker 3: Noble deed? Hmm.
[8:19] Speaker 5: Well, I wonder what I did. Well, I'm as baffled
[8:21] Speaker 5: as you are.
[8:21] Speaker 2: The nicest thing I remember you ever doing was the
[8:24] Speaker 2: year you broke your leg and stayed home all summer.
[8:28] Speaker 3: It was a great town to live in that year.
[8:30] Speaker 4: Didn't say who he was.
[8:33] Speaker 3: Just a friend.
[8:35] Speaker 4: Oh, well, I've got so many friends that I've done
[8:37] Speaker 4: nice things for that... Well, gee whiz, this might be anybody.
[8:40] Speaker 3: Yes, yes.
[8:41] Speaker 5: Well, now run along and let me get back to work,
[8:43] Speaker 5: will you?
[8:43] Speaker 3: Because I... Okay.
[8:45] Speaker 5: Thanks, Kramer.
[8:45] Speaker 3: Hey, Wimple.
[8:46] Speaker 5: Come on, you want to go over to Bondtown with me?
[8:48] Speaker 3: No.
[8:49] Speaker 4: No, thank you, Mr.
[8:49] Speaker 5: McGee, but I'd better not.
[8:51] Speaker 7: Oh?
[8:51] Speaker 3: I want to.
[8:52] Speaker 5: Hurry on home on account of.
[8:53] Speaker 3: Oh.
[8:56] Speaker 5: She's waiting for you?
[8:57] Speaker 4: No.
[8:58] Speaker 3: She'll be away all day.
[8:59] Speaker 4: That's when I like to hurry on home.
[9:01] Speaker 2: Oh.
[9:01] Speaker 3: Hold on, Walt. Billy Mills and the orchestra and Goofers.
[9:22] Speaker 3: Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Yeah.
[11:12] Speaker 4: Boy, this is kind of intriguing. This could be anybody
[11:15] Speaker 4: wanting to thank me for anything. Meet me at noon
[11:18] Speaker 4: at the barn time, the note says.
[11:21] Speaker 5: I know exactly where in the Bonton. This is a
[11:23] Speaker 5: pretty big store. Calling Mr.
[11:25] Speaker 3: Carr. Mr. John Carr, come to the office. Mr.
[11:29] Speaker 6: Ed Carr, come to the office.
[11:31] Speaker 3: Mr.
[11:31] Speaker 5: Tom Carr, come to the office. Calling all cars.
[11:40] Speaker 6: That is all.
[11:41] Speaker 4: Better ask somebody where people meet down here, I guess.
[11:44] Speaker 4: Any guy that wants to thank me for a noble
[11:45] Speaker 4: deed I've done by.
[11:46] Speaker 5: Oh, hey, sis.
[11:47] Speaker 6: Yes, sir. May I assist you, sir?
[11:49] Speaker 2: Yes.
[11:49] Speaker 4: I'm supposed to meet a guy down here on important business,
[11:51] Speaker 4: and I don't want to miss him.
[11:52] Speaker 6: Well, I'll be glad to help you, sir. Where are
[11:54] Speaker 6: you to meet him?
[11:56] Speaker 3: I don't know.
[11:57] Speaker 5: Wherever he is, down here someplace.
[12:00] Speaker 3: I see.
[12:00] Speaker 6: What is his name, sir?
[12:02] Speaker 5: I don't know. He's a friend of mine.
[12:06] Speaker 6: Well, does he work here, sir?
[12:09] Speaker 3: I don't know. I don't think so.
[12:13] Speaker 5: I done him a big favor, though.
[12:15] Speaker 6: What did you do for him?
[12:17] Speaker 5: I don't know. He wants to thank me for it, personally.
[12:23] Speaker 6: Thank you for what?
[12:25] Speaker 5: I don't know.
[12:27] Speaker 4: Whatever I done for whoever it was whenever I done it.
[12:30] Speaker 4: Where should I wait for him?
[12:34] Speaker 8: Do you see the gentleman over there with the carnation, sir?
[12:38] Speaker 3: You go ask him this. Oh, okay.
[12:40] Speaker 5: You think he can help me, sis?
[12:41] Speaker 3: I don't know. But I want him to hear this.
[12:44] Speaker 3: He keeps telling me I'm stupid.
[12:50] Speaker 5: Not very helpful, I guess.
[12:51] Speaker 3: Calling Mr. Cranston. Mr.
[12:53] Speaker 6: Cranston, report to Mr.
[12:55] Speaker 3: John Goldbach in gents' underwear immediately. See you, Mr. Goldbach,
[13:01] Speaker 3: in underwear.
[13:10] Speaker 4: Guys, this is kind of an informal joint. You guys
[13:17] Speaker 4: will catch their death of cold trotting around.
[13:19] Speaker 5: In this evening.
[13:21] Speaker 6: Correction, Mr.
[13:22] Speaker 3: Cranston.
[13:23] Speaker 7: Mr.
[13:23] Speaker 3: Goldbach is not in gents' underwear. He's on the third floor.
[13:27] Speaker 5: Now, in ladies' hats.
[13:33] Speaker 3: Mr. Goldbach must be the store cut-up.
[13:36] Speaker 5: You'll be wearing a lampshade on his head next and going, oh, hi, Ollie. Well,
[13:39] Speaker 5: hello there, McGee. Say, how's your little missus? My missus
[13:42] Speaker 5: says she catches... Oh, Molly's getting along fine. That's good.
[13:45] Speaker 5: Tell her me and the missus was asking about her.
[13:47] Speaker 3: Well, I'll do that, Ollie.
[13:49] Speaker 5: Thanks, boy. McGee, I tell you a hundred times, don't
[13:53] Speaker 5: call me boy.
[13:55] Speaker 3: Okay, I'm sorry.
[13:57] Speaker 5: If I'm a boy, who's the papa of my kid?
[13:59] Speaker 3: Right, Olly. I think it's right to.
[14:01] Speaker 5: Call people younger than they are.
[14:02] Speaker 3: Well.
[14:03] Speaker 5: Suppose I walked up to a woman and said, hello, girly.
[14:06] Speaker 3: Okay.
[14:07] Speaker 5: And Mrs. would hammer me down to the sides of
[14:09] Speaker 5: the boy.
[14:11] Speaker 3: All right.
[14:12] Speaker 5: It won't happen again. No kidding, though.
[14:13] Speaker 3: Is your wife really jealous like that?
[14:15] Speaker 5: Of you? McGee, sometimes it's just plain ridiculous.
[14:18] Speaker 3: Yeah?
[14:19] Speaker 5: When V got married, she said she didn't have a
[14:20] Speaker 5: yellow spoon in her body. Good. But her head is
[14:23] Speaker 5: chock full of them. She acts like I was the
[14:27] Speaker 5: regular Don Juan, and I ain't Don Juan, Don Juan
[14:29] Speaker 5: paying either.
[14:30] Speaker 4: Well, that can be pretty unhandy, because, my gosh, if
[14:34] Speaker 4: you just raise this cane, if I even look at
[14:36] Speaker 4: another woman.
[14:37] Speaker 5: Yeah? Once I brought her a box of candy, and
[14:39] Speaker 5: she wouldn't eat it. You buy it from a lady clerk? No,
[14:42] Speaker 5: but on the box was a picture of Martha Washington.
[14:44] Speaker 2: Oh.
[14:47] Speaker 5: Well, my wife's not like that. She'll eat any kind
[14:49] Speaker 5: of candy.
[14:50] Speaker 4: Any time me and the missus walks along the street
[14:52] Speaker 4: and a woman passes, she always says, Uli, there's a
[14:55] Speaker 4: gleam in your eye.
[14:57] Speaker 5: I say, don't worry, missus. It's just the sun shining
[14:59] Speaker 5: on my bifocals. Well, that's pretty ridiculous anyhow, Uli. You
[15:05] Speaker 5: ought to break her, that kind of stuff. Oh, not me, McGee.
[15:08] Speaker 5: I like it.
[15:08] Speaker 3: You like it? Sure.
[15:10] Speaker 4: When the fellow gets my age, he'd rather have his
[15:12] Speaker 4: smith's tank, he's the wild young wolf that he ain't,
[15:15] Speaker 4: instead of the tame old coffee spaniel that he is.
[15:17] Speaker 3: I'll see you later, McGee. So long, O.
[15:26] Speaker 4: Gone at this after 12 o'clock already. I wish my
[15:29] Speaker 4: good friend that owes me so much whoever.
[15:31] Speaker 3: He is would show up.
[15:31] Speaker 6: Pardon me, sir. Are you Mr. Fiver McGee?
[15:33] Speaker 5: Yeah, that's me, son.
[15:35] Speaker 3: Why?
[15:35] Speaker 8: I'm a Bon Ton messenger, sir.
[15:37] Speaker 2: Oh?
[15:37] Speaker 8: I have just received a communication for you by telephone.
[15:40] Speaker 6: You were to meet a gentleman here at noon.
[15:42] Speaker 5: Yeah. Did he call?
[15:43] Speaker 6: The gentleman regrets he has been detained by business, sir.
[15:46] Speaker 2: Oh?
[15:46] Speaker 6: He requests you meet him at the post office at
[15:48] Speaker 6: 2 o'clock.
[15:49] Speaker 8: He urgently wishes to express his personal thanks for a
[15:52] Speaker 8: wonderful deed.
[15:53] Speaker 5: End of communication.
[15:55] Speaker 3: Oh, well. Oh, thanks, bud.
[15:57] Speaker 5: Post office at 2 o'clock, huh?
[15:59] Speaker 8: Yes, sir, and may I inform you, sir, that while
[16:02] Speaker 8: we of the Bonton Messenger Service are not permitted to
[16:05] Speaker 8: solicit any monetary remuneration for our services, such remuneration, when
[16:09] Speaker 8: freely tendered by the customer, may.
[16:11] Speaker 6: With dignity be accepted.
[16:23] Speaker 5: Jets, I'm sorry to hear that, but.
[16:27] Speaker 4: If the store don't allow you boys to take tips,
[16:29] Speaker 4: I ain't one to break the rules. Where do you
[16:31] Speaker 4: keep the streetcars around here?
[16:32] Speaker 3: Oh, out on the street.
[16:33] Speaker 5: I gotta catch one and get to the post office.
[16:35] Speaker 3: So....
[16:52] Speaker 4: Then I got this message to meet him at the
[16:54] Speaker 4: post office, Harlow, which is where I'm on my way
[16:57] Speaker 4: to now.
[16:57] Speaker 3: To the post office. Well, that sounds pretty interesting, pal.
[17:00] Speaker 2: Have you been out saving some millionaire's daughter from a
[17:03] Speaker 2: runaway horse?
[17:04] Speaker 3: Well, I don't know, Junior. Uh, pal, what did he say?
[17:06] Speaker 3: Oak Street.
[17:21] Speaker 4: It says in this message that the guy wants to
[17:23] Speaker 4: thank me for something wonderful I've done. A guy don't
[17:26] Speaker 4: thank you for something wonderful by slapping you on the
[17:27] Speaker 4: back and bumming a cigar, you know.
[17:30] Speaker 3: No. Not one of those cigars you smoke, anyhow.
[17:33] Speaker 5: Didn't even sign his name to the message. Wants to
[17:35] Speaker 5: surprise me, I guess.
[17:36] Speaker 2: Well, it pays to be nice to people, all right.
[17:39] Speaker 2: Like the thing that happened to me driving through Missouri
[17:41] Speaker 2: last summer.
[17:41] Speaker 3: What happened? Get pinched? No, no, no. No, I was
[17:45] Speaker 3: tooling down this country road, you see. Uh-huh. Taking in
[17:47] Speaker 3: the scenery.
[17:48] Speaker 2: And all at once I came across this big black
[17:50] Speaker 2: sedan with the motor dead sitting right back across the
[17:54] Speaker 2: railroad track.
[17:55] Speaker 5: No kidding. Motor guilt, huh?
[17:56] Speaker 3: Anybody in it?
[17:57] Speaker 8: Yes.
[17:58] Speaker 3: Yes. This beautiful blonde girl sitting in the front seat. Yeah.
[18:02] Speaker 3: Sort of waving her hands around and looking helpless. So I...
[18:09] Speaker 3: All the obvious marks of a really modern home.
[18:25] Speaker 2: The aluminum windows, for instance, with their combination screens and
[18:28] Speaker 2: storm sash in aluminum.
[18:30] Speaker 3: Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
[18:32] Speaker 5: How'd you get away over there?
[18:33] Speaker 2: Aluminum flashing on the roof. Aluminum doors with glass panels
[18:37] Speaker 2: for winter and spring for summer. The Reynolds Lifetime Aluminum Gutters.
[18:41] Speaker 5: Yeah, come on, Junior.
[18:42] Speaker 4: Get out of the gutter and back to the railroad track.
[18:44] Speaker 3: What happened to the car.
[18:45] Speaker 5: With the girl?
[18:46] Speaker 3: I just told you, pal. You told me?
[18:48] Speaker 2: Yes, this beautiful blonde girl was sitting there in the car.
[18:51] Speaker 6: You see.
[18:52] Speaker 3: Oh, I... Don't support the friend.
[18:54] Speaker 2: Anyone else support the friend?
[18:59] Speaker 3: Built almost completely of aluminum. She was? Yes.
[19:12] Speaker 2: In the modern home, you step across an aluminum threshold.
[19:15] Speaker 3: The baseboards are aluminum. The hardware is aluminum. The heating
[19:19] Speaker 3: and ventilating ducts.
[19:20] Speaker 5: Yeah, but what's that got to do with the block?
[19:21] Speaker 3: Modern Builders.
[19:23] Speaker 2: Modern builders are using more and more of the light,
[19:26] Speaker 2: strong metal that never rusts.
[19:28] Speaker 3: Aluminum. Yeah, but how? Reynolds aluminum. Not only in homes,
[19:31] Speaker 3: but in buildings built for investment. Big office buildings. Smart
[19:34] Speaker 3: shops with entire fronts of aluminum.
[19:36] Speaker 4: Hey, hey, hey, hey.
[19:37] Speaker 5: Look, Louie.
[19:38] Speaker 3: Yes, pal. Golf laminate, golf laminate. That's change for net. Oh, hey,
[19:43] Speaker 3: I've got to get off here, pal. I've got to
[19:46] Speaker 3: get off here. This is my stop.
[19:47] Speaker 5: Yeah, but what happened to the car on the railroad track?
[19:49] Speaker 3: Did you get it?
[19:50] Speaker 5: The girl out all right?
[19:51] Speaker 3: Oh, no, I didn't stop. Huh? No, those tracks were abandoned.
[19:55] Speaker 3: Everybody parked there. The King's Men and Two Shillelagh O'Sullivans.
[20:08] Speaker 7: Two Shillelagh O'Sullivans don't give any man a go. There's
[20:12] Speaker 7: many a man that rode a horse across the western plains.
[20:16] Speaker 3: But there's never been one like the Irishman. O'Sullivan was
[20:20] Speaker 3: the same. He never packed a chute.
[20:22] Speaker 7: Iron the seat he never felt.
[20:25] Speaker 3: But Two Shillelagh is always there. We call it the
[20:29] Speaker 3: temporary rifle.
[20:31] Speaker 5: You never have to reload it.
[20:46] Speaker 7: Oh, this bronco-bustin' Irishman from Sotheby's Isle was apt to
[20:52] Speaker 7: live in peace for like he always wore a smile.
[20:55] Speaker 7: But when the smile was leavin' him, he'd always come unwound.
[20:59] Speaker 7: That's as to any crossin' him.
[21:02] Speaker 3: Oh, this man was a demon.
[21:03] Speaker 7: He could put his left hand in his right hip
[21:07] Speaker 7: pocket and hold himself out at arm's length.
[21:20] Speaker 3: Oh, I've thrown a rope for Brandon Trapp. He was
[21:23] Speaker 3: a mighty man. I've drawn him to shillelagh. He's now
[21:27] Speaker 3: the fastest in the land.
[21:29] Speaker 7: It would be a sad mistake, me boy, to reach
[21:31] Speaker 7: for a forty-four.
[21:33] Speaker 5: Before you could get the hammer.
[21:35] Speaker 3: Cocked, he'd have you off the floor. Oh, yippee-ki-yay, oh,
[21:39] Speaker 3: me bucko. Be gone, yippee-ki-yo. To shillelagh, O' Sullivan. He's
[21:45] Speaker 3: given a man the goal.
[21:46] Speaker 5: The back of his hand.
[21:49] Speaker 7: Two o'clock at the post office.
[21:53] Speaker 3: That's what the message said.
[22:19] Speaker 4: Whoever it is ought to be here pretty soon. I've
[22:21] Speaker 4: been walking this dead red for since 1.30.
[22:24] Speaker 3: Pardon me, sir. You look distressed. May I assist you
[22:26] Speaker 3: in any way?
[22:27] Speaker 5: Well, I don't know.
[22:28] Speaker 3: You work here, do you?
[22:29] Speaker 4: That is correct, sir. I, sir, am Claude J. Babelton,
[22:32] Speaker 4: Post Office Information and Guest Relations.
[22:34] Speaker 3: At your service.
[22:35] Speaker 5: Now, guys, this is a new wrinkle, bud.
[22:40] Speaker 4: I've been filling my fountain pens and reading the posters
[22:42] Speaker 4: in this joint for 20 years, and this is the
[22:45] Speaker 4: first time I've ever been offered anything besides a boot
[22:47] Speaker 4: down the front steps.
[22:49] Speaker 5: Ah, changes, sir, changes in Washington. New faces, you know. Well,
[22:55] Speaker 5: I hope you put in for one.
[23:01] Speaker 3: My every moment is dedicated to your happiness, sir.
[23:04] Speaker 4: What can I do for you? Well, I just came
[23:06] Speaker 4: down here to say... Care to taste our new mucilage?
[23:08] Speaker 3: Huh? Like some old postage stamps?
[23:10] Speaker 5: Want to come behind the counter and stamp on a
[23:11] Speaker 5: few packages?
[23:13] Speaker 3: No, no.
[23:14] Speaker 2: Henness anyone?
[23:17] Speaker 3: Take it easy, will you?
[23:19] Speaker 5: Oh, I just can't control myself, sir.
[23:20] Speaker 4: Claude, the chief, said to me, go out there and
[23:23] Speaker 4: charm the people. Dazzle them, he said. Show them how
[23:26] Speaker 4: happy they are with us running things. It's been a
[23:29] Speaker 4: long time, Claude.
[23:31] Speaker 5: He said.
[23:34] Speaker 3: He said it.
[23:36] Speaker 5: Your slightest wish is our command, sir.
[23:37] Speaker 7: Good.
[23:38] Speaker 4: Anything we can do to make you happy, keep your
[23:39] Speaker 4: mind off the two deliveries a day, just ask. Well,
[23:45] Speaker 4: if you'll pipe down a minute, bud, I have got
[23:47] Speaker 4: a problem.
[23:47] Speaker 3: Oh, I just love problems. Yeah?
[23:49] Speaker 4: Is it the problem about if John has 12 apples
[23:52] Speaker 4: and Jack has no apples, where did Jack.
[23:54] Speaker 5: Get the demijohn full of apple jack?
[23:56] Speaker 3: Well, that's the... Now, Dad's ready.
[23:59] Speaker 5: Cut it out, will you?
[24:00] Speaker 3: Now, look, Claude.
[24:01] Speaker 4: Oh, that's exactly what my mother said when Sister threw
[24:04] Speaker 4: a tomcat into my crib.
[24:07] Speaker 3: Look, Claude, she said. Did I ever look Claude? Oh,
[24:15] Speaker 3: I tell you.
[24:15] Speaker 4: I started from scratch. I gotta meet a guy down
[24:22] Speaker 4: here and I got no time for this foolishness. Is
[24:25] Speaker 4: your name McGee, sir? Yes, my name's McGee, sir. A
[24:27] Speaker 4: gentleman left a message for you two hours ago. He'll
[24:29] Speaker 4: meet you in front.
[24:30] Speaker 5: Of a bank.
[24:31] Speaker 3: The bank?
[24:31] Speaker 5: The bank.
[24:32] Speaker 3: Well, why didn't you tell me?
[24:33] Speaker 4: Why didn't you ask me? Don't give me any lip, Buster.
[24:36] Speaker 4: By George, I can get you fired. I'll write to
[24:39] Speaker 4: my congressman about you.
[24:40] Speaker 3: Is that a promise?
[24:41] Speaker 5: You said it is a promise.
[24:42] Speaker 3: Good. I'll tell dear old dad to expect a letter.
[24:44] Speaker 3: Good day.
[24:54] Speaker 5: Well, I hope I.
[24:57] Speaker 4: Hadn't kept the guy waiting too long. I'm out of
[25:00] Speaker 4: wind like a leaky bagpipe. If I had one more
[25:04] Speaker 4: block to go. There's nobody in front of the bank
[25:07] Speaker 4: so far.
[25:07] Speaker 3: I just have to wait, I guess.
[25:11] Speaker 4: I'd sure hate for whoever it is to miss the
[25:13] Speaker 4: chance to thank me after all the.
[25:15] Speaker 3: Oh, hi, old-timer. Oh, hello there, Johnny.
[25:18] Speaker 2: What you doing downtown waiting for the St. Patrick's Day parade?
[25:21] Speaker 3: No, I'm supposed to.
[25:22] Speaker 2: Because parade was this morning.
[25:24] Speaker 3: You missed it. I know.
[25:26] Speaker 5: I've been running around town so much I didn't get time.
[25:29] Speaker 3: Oh, I love parades, son. Used to lead all the
[25:31] Speaker 3: parades when I was a kid. You led them?
[25:33] Speaker 5: What were you, a drum major? Nope, I was a
[25:35] Speaker 5: drum toter, Johnny.
[25:36] Speaker 2: Oh? Used to tote the bass drum on my back
[25:38] Speaker 2: while Papa marched behind and played it. I can see
[25:41] Speaker 2: me now, just a little dirty-faced kid, marching proudly down
[25:44] Speaker 2: the street with the drum on my back, and Papa
[25:46] Speaker 2: beating out the Stars and Stripes forever, or Sweet Molly Malone,
[25:49] Speaker 2: whichever one you thought it was.
[25:53] Speaker 5: Stars and Stripes or Molly Malone, they don't sound alike.
[25:56] Speaker 3: They do when.
[25:56] Speaker 2: Papa plays them. But, hey, speaking of Molly, how's that
[26:01] Speaker 2: girl yours, Johnny?
[26:02] Speaker 3: I hear she got the tip.
[26:03] Speaker 5: Oh, she's getting along fine.
[26:05] Speaker 4: I've been kind of neglecting her today, though. I should
[26:07] Speaker 4: have been home spending the afternoon with her instead of
[26:09] Speaker 4: running around downtown.
[26:10] Speaker 3: Why didn't you? Well, I was supposed to meet a
[26:12] Speaker 3: guy and... Uh-oh.
[26:15] Speaker 5: Here comes Doc Gamble.
[26:16] Speaker 2: Fat 80.
[26:17] Speaker 4: He's probably going to ball me out for being so thoughtless.
[26:22] Speaker 4: Hello there, Doc.
[26:23] Speaker 3: Oh, hi, old-timer.
[26:24] Speaker 6: Hey.
[26:26] Speaker 3: And a late good afternoon to you, Vest Splitter. Hi,
[26:31] Speaker 3: little bucket. I just came from your house, sonny boy.
[26:35] Speaker 5: Molly feels much better.
[26:36] Speaker 3: Oh, swell.
[26:37] Speaker 4: I'd have been home entertaining her, Doc, but I got
[26:39] Speaker 4: a message this morning.
[26:40] Speaker 5: Sure, sure, sure.
[26:40] Speaker 4: A friend of mine wants to thank me for something
[26:42] Speaker 4: wonderful I've done, and I got to wait here and
[26:44] Speaker 4: meet him.
[26:44] Speaker 3: Relax. You've met him. No, no, no, no. You don't
[26:48] Speaker 3: have to.
[26:48] Speaker 5: You don't understand, Lardhead.
[26:50] Speaker 3: You see, the message is.
[26:51] Speaker 5: Don't tell me I dictated it. No, this is from a.
[26:57] Speaker 3: Huh?
[26:59] Speaker 4: Please meet me various places. I want to thank you
[27:02] Speaker 4: for the wonderful thing you've done.
[27:03] Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what I said.
[27:04] Speaker 4: And I do want to thank you. It was wonderful
[27:06] Speaker 4: of you. What was wonderful of me? Staying downtown all day.
[27:10] Speaker 3: What do you mean? You gave Molly the finest.
[27:12] Speaker 5: Day's rest she's had since she married you.
[27:18] Speaker 3: You.
[27:19] Speaker 2: You mean you sent all them?
[27:23] Speaker 5: Oh, my gosh. Ain't medical science wonderful?
[27:34] Speaker 3: Fibber McGee returns in a moment.
[27:37] Speaker 2: A hearty, nutritious dish just made to order for these
[27:40] Speaker 2: March days is that old-time American favorite.
[27:42] Speaker 3: Baked macaroni and cheese.
[27:44] Speaker 2: It's real stick-to-your-ribs food, but as you homemakers know, it
[27:48] Speaker 2: has a stubborn habit of sticking to the baking dish, too. Well,
[27:52] Speaker 2: here's how to banish that nuisance once and for all.
[27:55] Speaker 2: Line the inside of the casserole with work-saving Reynolds Wrap,
[28:00] Speaker 2: the original and genuine pure aluminum foil.
[28:03] Speaker 3: Your baking dish stays clean. No baked-on crust, no soaking,
[28:07] Speaker 3: no scouring. Just take a piece of Reynolds wrap and
[28:10] Speaker 3: fit it around.
[28:11] Speaker 2: The bottom and sides of the casserole dish, pressing down firmly.
[28:15] Speaker 2: Let the edges stick up all around to prevent food
[28:17] Speaker 2: from bubbling over. Macaroni and cheese is easy and thrifty
[28:20] Speaker 2: to make and mighty good eating.
[28:23] Speaker 3: If there's any left over, just fold a foil liner
[28:25] Speaker 3: over it and store it.
[28:27] Speaker 2: But do spare yourself that messy job of scouring the casserole.
[28:31] Speaker 2: Stock up on Reynolds Wrapped tomorrow at your grocer's in
[28:35] Speaker 2: standard and jumbo economy rolls and the new heavy-duty Reynolds Wrapped.
[28:40] Speaker 3: Half a yard wide. Made by the Reynolds.
[28:42] Speaker 2: Metals Company, world's largest producers of aluminum foil.
[28:54] Speaker 4: Ladies and gentlemen, this flu has really kind of knocked
[28:57] Speaker 4: Molly out. I'm happy to say she's getting along much
[29:00] Speaker 4: better now.
[29:01] Speaker 5: It'll just take a while.
[29:03] Speaker 4: Meanwhile, don't forget next Tuesday night, March 19th, when NBC
[29:07] Speaker 4: brings you the Academy Awards broadcast from Hollywood.
[29:10] Speaker 3: Hey, that should be quite a thing, pal. All those stars.
[29:13] Speaker 5: You said it, Junior.
[29:14] Speaker 4: Matter of fact, I got a good notion to fly
[29:16] Speaker 4: out there and show them guys how to run it.
[29:18] Speaker 4: On account of, because naturally, a guy like I am,
[29:20] Speaker 4: that he's used to being in vaudeville and knows all
[29:22] Speaker 4: about the movies from seeing them through the back of
[29:24] Speaker 4: the screen, he's... McGee.
[29:25] Speaker 5: Molly just phoned.
[29:27] Speaker 3: I got a message for you. Yeah, what'd you say, Doc? Said, hush, dearie. Oh.
[29:32] Speaker 5: Oh, uh, good night.
[29:43] Speaker 2: The Reynolds Metals Company, pioneers of progress through aluminum, has
[29:46] Speaker 2: brought you Fibber McGee and Molly Transcribed with Bill Thompson,
[29:49] Speaker 2: Arthur Q.
[29:50] Speaker 3: Bryan, Dick Legrand, John.
[29:51] Speaker 2: McIntyre, Cliff Marquette, Elvia Allman, Mary Jane Croft, Richard Beals,
[29:56] Speaker 2: and me, Harlow Wilcox.
[29:57] Speaker 3: Don't forget to see Mr.
[29:58] Speaker 2: Peepers starring Wally Cox on NBC television Sunday night. Also
[30:03] Speaker 2: brought to you by Reynolds Aluminum. And be sure to
[30:05] Speaker 2: be with us again next Tuesday night.
[30:08] Speaker 3: Good night.
[30:36] Speaker 1: That completes Fibber McGee and Molly. Reward for a noble deed.
[30:41] Speaker 1: Good night, ladies and gentlemen, until we meet again.
