## Transcript

[0:00] Speaker 1: At Wistful Vista's Elks Club, the community hobby show is
[0:03] Speaker 1: ready to open, with Fibber McGee serving as chairman. This
[0:07] Speaker 1: is Fibber McGee and Molly in A Successful Show, episode
[0:12] Speaker 1: number 925, originally heard on NBC on June 18, 1954.
[0:19] Speaker 1: Jim Jordan and Marion Jordan are Fibber and Molly as
[0:22] Speaker 1: the three-day hobby show affair reaches its public gathering, following
[0:26] Speaker 1: the appointment of Fibber as chairman and the registration of entries.
[0:31] Speaker 1: It is a weekday visit to the familiar world of
[0:33] Speaker 1: Wistful Vista, where a local event can bring together a
[0:37] Speaker 1: room full of neighbors and their interests. We now take
[0:40] Speaker 1: you back to the original broadcast.
[0:43] Speaker 2: It's time for Fibber McGee and Molly.
[0:53] Speaker 3: Every weekday at this time, NBC brings you Fibber McGee
[0:56] Speaker 3: and Molly Transcribed. The show is written by Phil Leslie
[0:59] Speaker 3: and Ralph Goodman and directed by Max Hutto. We'll join
[1:10] Speaker 3: Fibber and Molly in just a moment. Great changes have
[1:13] Speaker 3: taken place in America during the past dozen years, changes
[1:16] Speaker 3: that assure Americans a longer life, a better job, and
[1:20] Speaker 3: a higher standard of living than we've ever known. In
[1:23] Speaker 3: these past dozen years, America has enjoyed an almost miraculous expansion,
[1:27] Speaker 3: which has brought new homes, new highways, new schools, new hospitals, yes,
[1:31] Speaker 3: even new cities. What does this mean? In a nutshell,
[1:35] Speaker 3: it means that the future of America is secure. Despite
[1:39] Speaker 3: temporary variations and downswings, the trend of employment and earnings
[1:43] Speaker 3: has been spectacularly upward, and it must continue upward in
[1:46] Speaker 3: order to keep pace with ever-increasing demand. More homes and
[1:50] Speaker 3: highways are still needed, more schools and hospitals, more industry
[1:53] Speaker 3: and equipment, and more electrical energy to supply America's ever-expanding needs.
[1:58] Speaker 3: If you'd like to learn more about the opportunities ahead,
[2:00] Speaker 3: write to Box 1776, Grand Central Station, New York City,
[2:05] Speaker 3: for the free booklet, The Future of America. Box 1776,
[2:09] Speaker 3: Grand Central Station, New York City. We take you now
[2:22] Speaker 3: to the Wistful Vista Elks Club, where booths are being
[2:25] Speaker 3: built and arrangements being made for the big hobby show
[2:27] Speaker 3: that opens tonight.
[2:29] Speaker 2: The chairman, Mr. McGee, has things pretty well in hand.
[2:35] Speaker 4: Careful with that two-by-four, man.
[2:37] Speaker 5: Yes, careful with that two-by-four, you guys.
[2:40] Speaker 4: Be sure you build my booth big enough there, the
[2:42] Speaker 4: director's booth. Give me plenty of room.
[2:45] Speaker 6: Yes, we want a big booth for the boss, you guys.
[2:48] Speaker 2: Big one.
[2:49] Speaker 4: Yeah, thanks, Wallace. I don't know what I'd do without you.
[2:51] Speaker 5: That's okay, Chief. I like giving orders to these fellows.
[2:56] Speaker 5: I don't get much chance to give orders at home.
[2:58] Speaker 4: Yeah, I know what you mean. Watch that chandelier up there, men.
[3:02] Speaker 5: Yes, watch that chandelier, you clunky fools.
[3:06] Speaker 4: Oh, now, just a minute, Wallace.
[3:07] Speaker 5: You with the buzzsaw over there, you hurry it up.
[3:10] Speaker 7: What do you think this is, a school picnic?
[3:12] Speaker 1: Come on.
[3:13] Speaker 4: Gosh, he's getting drunk with power. I better slow him
[3:15] Speaker 4: down before.
[3:16] Speaker 8: Get Mr. McGee's booth set up, you guys, before I
[3:19] Speaker 8: come over there.
[3:19] Speaker 4: Hey, Wint, hey, come here, will you?
[3:22] Speaker 2: Yes, Chief. Look.
[3:24] Speaker 4: I appreciate you getting up at six o'clock this morning
[3:26] Speaker 4: and coming down here to help, but I'll handle the work, men.
[3:29] Speaker 4: You take the rest of this crepe paper and make
[3:31] Speaker 4: some more of those nice little paper roses to decorate
[3:33] Speaker 4: the booth.
[3:34] Speaker 5: Oh, I'm sick of making roses. I know it isn't
[3:38] Speaker 5: nice of me to complain like this, but would you
[3:40] Speaker 5: mind if.
[3:41] Speaker 8: If what?
[3:44] Speaker 5: If I made snapdragons instead?
[3:46] Speaker 8: No.
[3:47] Speaker 4: I guess that'll be all right. You make whatever you want.
[3:49] Speaker 4: I hereby put you in complete charge of the decorations department,
[3:52] Speaker 4: the paper flower division.
[3:54] Speaker 5: Oh, thank you, Mr.
[3:55] Speaker 2: McGee.
[3:56] Speaker 5: I appreciate your faith in me, and I shall not
[3:59] Speaker 5: let you down. I'll get back to work.
[4:01] Speaker 4: Good boy, Wimp. Wow, you sure have to be a
[4:05] Speaker 4: super diplomat to handle a bunch of guys.
[4:06] Speaker 8: Oh, Mr.
[4:07] Speaker 2: McGee.
[4:07] Speaker 6: Yeah, Gus, what's the problem? We got the sign ready
[4:10] Speaker 6: for the front door. All right, boys, stretch that banner
[4:13] Speaker 6: across the hall. Hold it up so Mr. McGee can
[4:16] Speaker 6: look at it. There you are, Mr. McGee. How's it look?
[4:22] Speaker 9: Hmm.
[4:23] Speaker 4: Well, I don't know whether it's big enough, Gus.
[4:26] Speaker 6: It's six feet high and 30 feet long.
[4:28] Speaker 4: Well, this is a big event, this hobby show I'm handling.
[4:31] Speaker 4: Hold it up a little higher, man. Want to get
[4:32] Speaker 4: a better look at it. Ah, that's it.
[4:35] Speaker 6: Hey there, Tony.
[4:36] Speaker 8: I'm here.
[4:37] Speaker 6: Here I am, boy.
[4:38] Speaker 8: I'm sorry I'm late.
[4:39] Speaker 4: That's okay, old-timer. I'll be with you in a minute.
[4:40] Speaker 2: But don't worry.
[4:41] Speaker 6: I'll make up for lost time. Sure, sure.
[4:43] Speaker 4: I'll be with you as soon as I get through.
[4:44] Speaker 6: You know me, Johnny. Once I get started, I don't
[4:46] Speaker 6: waste no time.
[4:47] Speaker 4: Look, will you just pipe.
[4:48] Speaker 10: Yes, sirree.
[4:48] Speaker 7: When I get going, I really go, man, go. I'm
[4:51] Speaker 7: a ball of fire, a streak of lightning, a thunderbolt.
[4:54] Speaker 7: I travel like a greased pig at a county fair.
[4:56] Speaker 7: Dashing around, rushing back and forth, toting stuff here, sawing
[4:59] Speaker 7: wood there, hammering, painting.
[5:01] Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. All right already.
[5:04] Speaker 4: Now, if you'll just get your coveralls on as soon
[5:06] Speaker 4: as I finish with Gus here, I'll give you a
[5:08] Speaker 4: job to do.
[5:08] Speaker 6: Okay, Johnny.
[5:10] Speaker 2: But take your time, son. I'm a little pooped. I
[5:13] Speaker 2: think I'll go lie down.
[5:15] Speaker 1: Hmm.
[5:16] Speaker 4: Well, I'm sorry about this interruption, Gus.
[5:18] Speaker 6: How about the sign? Okay?
[5:20] Speaker 4: It looks swell. It'll be fine.
[5:22] Speaker 2: Good.
[5:22] Speaker 4: With one little change.
[5:24] Speaker 6: Change?
[5:25] Speaker 4: Yeah. I think the sign itself is big enough, but
[5:28] Speaker 4: I want you to change the size of them words,
[5:30] Speaker 4: Elk's Hobby Shows. Instead of three feet high, I want
[5:33] Speaker 4: them letters five feet high, Gus.
[5:35] Speaker 6: But that's a big job. You said yourself you wanted
[5:38] Speaker 6: them three feet.
[5:39] Speaker 4: Yeah, I know, but I've been thinking it over, Gus,
[5:41] Speaker 4: and I feel that the part that says Elk's Hobby
[5:44] Speaker 4: Show ought to be as big as the part that
[5:46] Speaker 4: says Produced, directed, arranged, built, and completely handled by Fever McGee.
[5:49] Speaker 4: I wouldn't want anybody to think I was trying to
[5:52] Speaker 4: make myself sound big or something. You know, big shot.
[5:54] Speaker 3: You?
[5:55] Speaker 2: Oh, nobody'd ever think that, unless a friend.
[6:00] Speaker 4: There'll be a lot of strangers here tonight, people that
[6:02] Speaker 4: don't know me for what I really am. Some of
[6:04] Speaker 4: them strangers won't realize that I'm devoting my valuable time
[6:07] Speaker 4: to this thing not to take personal credit, but merely
[6:09] Speaker 4: to do my duty as a member of the Elks
[6:11] Speaker 4: Club and a citizen of this fine community, and not
[6:13] Speaker 4: for personal glory, but for the glory.
[6:16] Speaker 4: What was that?
[6:18] Speaker 6: A picture of George Washington just fell off the wall.
[6:21] Speaker 4: Well, one of you men put it back up there.
[6:23] Speaker 4: Let's not stand here gaping. We got work to do.
[6:26] Speaker 4: Get the rest of them booths built, men. They'll be
[6:28] Speaker 4: bringing their hobbies in here to set up in a
[6:29] Speaker 4: couple of hours.
[6:30] Speaker 3: Okay, fellows.
[6:31] Speaker 6: You heard what the noise said. Let's get back to work.
[6:33] Speaker 4: We got lots to do here before the show opens tonight.
[6:36] Speaker 4: Get with it and you win.
[6:37] Speaker 8: Yes, Mr. McGee.
[6:38] Speaker 4: Snap into them snapdragons, man. Let's get this show on
[6:40] Speaker 4: the road.
[6:41] Speaker 8: Get with it.
[6:51] Speaker 2: Back to Wistful Vista in a minute.
[6:54] Speaker 3: Here's a question that may save you hundreds of dollars
[6:57] Speaker 3: or even your life if you know the answer. The question,
[7:00] Speaker 3: what is the top speed you can safely drive after
[7:02] Speaker 3: dark if you have to rely on your own headlights
[7:05] Speaker 3: to show up danger? The answer, according to the National
[7:08] Speaker 3: Safety Council, is 45 miles per hour. If you exceed
[7:11] Speaker 3: 45 miles per hour, you're driving beyond the visibility limit
[7:15] Speaker 3: of your headlights. You might also test your traffic knowledge
[7:18] Speaker 3: with this one. At 40 miles an hour, how close
[7:20] Speaker 3: should you follow the car ahead?
[7:22] Speaker 2: The answer.
[7:23] Speaker 3: At 40 miles an hour, you should keep at least
[7:25] Speaker 3: 125 feet. That's about eight car lengths to the rear
[7:29] Speaker 3: of the car ahead. And even then, you're asking for
[7:31] Speaker 3: a rear-end collision unless you keep constantly alert. So follow
[7:35] Speaker 3: your safety counsel's advice and keep plenty of distance between
[7:38] Speaker 3: yourself and the car ahead. Following too closely is a
[7:41] Speaker 3: major cause of traffic accidents. And remember, the main secret
[7:44] Speaker 3: of safe driving is simply to use common sense.
[7:47] Speaker 2: Automobile accidents don't just happen. Drivers make them happen through carelessness.
[8:03] Speaker 9: My goodness, the place looks just wonderful, McGee. You about
[8:06] Speaker 9: ready to open the doors?
[8:07] Speaker 4: Pretty quick now.
[8:08] Speaker 9: I never dreamed there were so many different kinds of
[8:10] Speaker 9: hobbies till I helped you take the entries yesterday. Dog training,
[8:14] Speaker 9: a clock collection, match covers.
[8:16] Speaker 4: Sixty-five booths we got. Had a heck of a time
[8:19] Speaker 4: jamming them all in. Hey, wait till you see my booth,
[8:21] Speaker 4: the director's booth. That's advantageous.
[8:23] Speaker 10: Well, it should be. You're the head man.
[8:24] Speaker 4: Yep, it's up front by the entrance. And what you
[8:26] Speaker 4: looking at?
[8:27] Speaker 9: What's that man doing in the third booth down there?
[8:30] Speaker 9: In between Mr. McPestle's China chicken collection and the lady
[8:33] Speaker 9: with the tatty.
[8:34] Speaker 4: Oh, Alec Barlow? His hobby is whittling.
[8:36] Speaker 8: Whittling, huh?
[8:37] Speaker 10: Mm-hmm. What does he make? Little wooden statues and things?
[8:40] Speaker 4: No, just shavings.
[8:42] Speaker 11: Oh?
[8:42] Speaker 4: He just likes to whittle. Some of these fellas have got.
[8:44] Speaker 8: Hello, Molly. Your boy did a swell job setting this
[8:47] Speaker 8: thing up, huh?
[8:47] Speaker 10: Oh, he sure did, Doctor.
[8:49] Speaker 8: Have I got time to duck out for a sandwich?
[8:51] Speaker 4: Oh, no, there's no time for that, Fatso. You better
[8:53] Speaker 4: get back to your art booth.
[8:54] Speaker 8: And get these... Oh, I'm dying. I was so busy
[8:56] Speaker 8: setting up the paintings, I didn't get dinner.
[8:58] Speaker 4: Anytime you miss a meal, Fatso, you're a way ahead
[9:00] Speaker 4: on the calculus, so go back to.
[9:01] Speaker 2: Calculus?
[9:02] Speaker 10: He means calories, Doctor.
[9:03] Speaker 4: I mean calculus. All these booths are five feet wide
[9:07] Speaker 4: by four feet deep, and Doc is exactly 60 inches square.
[9:09] Speaker 10: He is?
[9:10] Speaker 4: In order to squeeze him into a booth, you've got
[9:12] Speaker 4: to take the calculus squared and subtract three pi.
[9:14] Speaker 8: Three pi?
[9:15] Speaker 4: Yeah, one chocolate and two banana cream. That's what he
[9:17] Speaker 4: usually has for dessert.
[9:18] Speaker 8: Here I am, starving, and he makes miserable jokes. And
[9:21] Speaker 8: believe me, Sonny, that one was very unfunny.
[9:24] Speaker 6: All set to go, Mr.
[9:25] Speaker 10: McGee.
[9:25] Speaker 6: Right, Gus.
[9:26] Speaker 4: Get my private booth ready and don't open that front
[9:28] Speaker 4: door until I get there to cut the ribbon. Where's
[9:30] Speaker 4: the scissors, Molly? Did you see the scissors?
[9:32] Speaker 10: In your hand, McGee. Don't be so nervous. You'll do fine.
[9:35] Speaker 8: Yeah, he probably cut his finger instead of the ribbon.
[9:37] Speaker 4: Back to your artist booth, fatso, with those so-called paintings
[9:40] Speaker 4: of yours.
[9:41] Speaker 6: Okay, I'm going.
[9:43] Speaker 4: Hey, Molly, you think I could have a couple of
[9:44] Speaker 4: sandwiches smuggled in during the show? No, go on now.
[9:48] Speaker 4: Let's get all set here.
[9:49] Speaker 6: All right, folks.
[9:52] Speaker 4: All right, folks, let's have your attention.
[9:54] Speaker 2: Quiet, everybody.
[9:55] Speaker 6: Quiet, please.
[9:57] Speaker 4: Will whoever has the pigeon collection please round it up?
[10:00] Speaker 4: We're about ready to start. Now, before I open the
[10:02] Speaker 4: doors to our admiring public and cut the ribbon, I
[10:05] Speaker 4: want to thank all you hobbyists for your cooperation. I
[10:09] Speaker 4: think we got a great display of hobbies here, and
[10:12] Speaker 4: I want to congratulate you on having the kind of
[10:13] Speaker 4: management that makes that possible. And when the show closes tonight,
[10:17] Speaker 4: I'd like you all... To be my guests at Tony's
[10:19] Speaker 4: for a spaghetti dinner.
[10:20] Speaker 3: Hooray!
[10:22] Speaker 6: No, who said that? Eight o'clock, Mr.
[10:25] Speaker 2: McGee.
[10:25] Speaker 10: What?
[10:26] Speaker 8: Oh, yeah.
[10:28] Speaker 4: What's that?
[10:29] Speaker 10: Yeah.
[10:44] Speaker 4: Boy, what a mouth, huh, Molly? Never expected it to
[10:46] Speaker 4: turn out like this.
[10:47] Speaker 10: Isn't it wonderful?
[10:48] Speaker 6: Good show, McGee.
[10:49] Speaker 8: We're proud of you.
[10:50] Speaker 4: Well, thanks, G.B.
[10:51] Speaker 8: How's your finger? Oh, fine.
[10:53] Speaker 4: Fine, G.B. I don't know how I got it tangled
[10:56] Speaker 4: in that ribbon while I was cutting it like that,
[10:57] Speaker 4: but I just nicked it, though.
[10:59] Speaker 10: Who was that, McGee?
[11:00] Speaker 4: That, my dear, was G.B. Axworthy, our grand exalted ruler.
[11:03] Speaker 10: You mean the president of your club?
[11:04] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[11:05] Speaker 4: Axworthy's a big wheel in the Elks, kiddo. With him
[11:07] Speaker 4: backing me, I could go places.
[11:09] Speaker 10: Well, you've certainly made a good impression tonight.
[11:11] Speaker 11: Yeah.
[11:12] Speaker 4: Let's go sit in my private booth where everybody can
[11:14] Speaker 4: see the man who's responsible for this great show.
[11:16] Speaker 6: Hey, Gus. Hey, you want to see me, Mr.
[11:18] Speaker 11: McGee?
[11:18] Speaker 4: Yeah, my private booth, Gus. You know, the director's booth.
[11:21] Speaker 4: I thought you understood it was going to set right
[11:22] Speaker 4: smack face in the front door, Gus.
[11:24] Speaker 6: Well, that's where we built it, like you said. But
[11:27] Speaker 6: you got so many hobby entries, the grand exalted ruler
[11:30] Speaker 6: in the executive board decided to move it.
[11:32] Speaker 4: Well, I guess it doesn't matter. I got a loud
[11:34] Speaker 4: speaker in there and I can be heard and seen
[11:35] Speaker 4: from the side. Which side's it on, Gus?
[11:37] Speaker 6: Well, it isn't exactly on the side. The executive board said.
[11:41] Speaker 4: Okay, never mind the executive board. Just lead us to it.
[11:44] Speaker 1: Yes, Mr.
[11:44] Speaker 2: McGee.
[11:45] Speaker 6: Right this way.
[11:46] Speaker 4: Excuse us, folks. We're coming through here, please.
[11:48] Speaker 10: Pardon me.
[11:49] Speaker 4: Let us through here, please. Official business. Coming through. Just
[11:52] Speaker 4: stay behind Gus, kiddo. And in a few minutes, you're
[11:54] Speaker 4: going to have the honor of sharing my personal booth.
[11:56] Speaker 2: Through here, Mrs.
[11:57] Speaker 6: McGee.
[11:58] Speaker 4: Right through this door, Molly. There, that's it.
[12:02] Speaker 10: In the alley?
[12:03] Speaker 2: The alley?
[12:04] Speaker 4: Is this where they put my booth? In the alley?
[12:07] Speaker 6: It was the only room left. We fixed up your
[12:10] Speaker 6: loudspeaker so you can talk through the microphone here, and
[12:12] Speaker 6: it comes out inside if you need anything.
[12:15] Speaker 4: Give me that microphone. I'll tear the lid off of
[12:17] Speaker 4: this thing.
[12:17] Speaker 10: Now, McGee.
[12:18] Speaker 4: Calling the Elks Club Executive Board. Calling the Executive Board.
[12:21] Speaker 4: Step out in the alley, you rats. I want all
[12:24] Speaker 4: you guys, one at a time. You too, Axworthy. And
[12:27] Speaker 4: all you guys to do.
[12:27] Speaker 10: And you too, Gamble.
[12:39] Speaker 2: Fibber and Molly will be right back.
[12:41] Speaker 11: It's your ear, and I'd like to bar it for
[12:43] Speaker 11: just a moment, if I may. This is Dave Garraway
[12:45] Speaker 11: with a few small words about a rather large program
[12:48] Speaker 11: that I hope you'll enjoy every Sunday on NBC. Large
[12:53] Speaker 11: is a strong word. Maybe I should say it's two hours.
[12:56] Speaker 11: And it does run for two hours. It's called Sunday
[12:58] Speaker 11: with Garraway, and from here it looks like a not
[13:00] Speaker 11: unreasonable way to spend a kind of a pleasant Sunday evening.
[13:04] Speaker 11: It has everything in the way of variety. Music by
[13:07] Speaker 11: the best music makers in the business, including those who
[13:10] Speaker 11: play show music, those who play pops, the new records,
[13:13] Speaker 11: the old records, a sprinkling of light classics, a sprinkling
[13:16] Speaker 11: of jazz, both cool and hot. There is a laugh
[13:19] Speaker 11: here and there.
[13:19] Speaker 4: And there are.
[13:20] Speaker 11: People from all over the world, too. People who write books,
[13:23] Speaker 11: people who read books, people in show business, people out
[13:25] Speaker 11: of show business.
[13:26] Speaker 2: We have NBC's international circuits to bring us.
[13:29] Speaker 11: Talk from Saudi Arabia if we want, or from Hoboken,
[13:33] Speaker 11: Illinois if we need. Why don't you try us on
[13:35] Speaker 11: NBC this coming Sunday with Jim Fleming with the news.
[13:38] Speaker 11: This is Dave Garraway inviting you to Sunday with Garraway.
[13:50] Speaker 4: Well, another weekend is coming up, and next Sunday, June 20th,
[13:53] Speaker 4: is Father's Day.
[13:54] Speaker 9: So we'd like to extend our congratulations and our best
[13:57] Speaker 9: wishes to the man of the day, the American father.
[14:01] Speaker 9: May you be the kind of a father that your
[14:02] Speaker 9: children's mother would like you to be.
[14:05] Speaker 4: Good night.
