[0:00] Speaker 1: Jim Jordan and Marion Jordan return as Fibber and Molly
[0:03] Speaker 1: McGee in NBC's 15-minute weekday series. Our visit is episode
[0:07] Speaker 1: number 1,088, originally heard February 1st, 1955. Fibber, McGee, and Molly.
[0:15] Speaker 1: The Mystery of the Missing Garbage Can, Part 2. This
[0:19] Speaker 1: is the middle broadcast in a three-part comic mystery, with
[0:23] Speaker 1: Fibber still following the trail of the McGee's missing garbage
[0:26] Speaker 1: can after the events of the previous day. The story
[0:29] Speaker 1: began on January 31st and would continue on February 2nd,
[0:33] Speaker 1: as the McGee household remains occupied with the matter at hand.
[0:37] Speaker 1: Here is Fibber, McGee, and Mollie from February of 1955.
[0:41] Speaker 1: We now take you back to the original broadcast.
[0:44] Speaker 2: It's time for Fibber, McGee, and Mollie.
[0:54] Speaker 3: Sundays through Thursdays, NBC brings you Fibber McGee and Molly Transcribed.
[0:59] Speaker 3: The show is written by Phil Leslie and Len Levinson
[1:02] Speaker 3: and directed by Max Hutto.
[1:10] Speaker 2: Our story in a moment, but first Mr. McGee wants
[1:13] Speaker 2: the missus to hear something.
[1:15] Speaker 4: Listen to this, Molly.
[1:16] Speaker 5: Here's an article in the paper that says the average
[1:18] Speaker 5: man with a college education will earn $ 100, 000 more in
[1:21] Speaker 5: his lifetime than a man without college.
[1:23] Speaker 6: $ 100, 000, McGee?
[1:24] Speaker 3: Yep.
[1:24] Speaker 6: Well, for goodness sakes.
[1:26] Speaker 4: It sure is.
[1:27] Speaker 6: Sure is what, dearie?
[1:28] Speaker 4: For goodness sake, just like you said.
[1:29] Speaker 2: Oh.
[1:30] Speaker 5: Thanks to the goodness of a good many mothers and
[1:32] Speaker 5: dads and the Prudential Swell Education Fund plan, a lot
[1:36] Speaker 5: of kids are going to find the road to success
[1:38] Speaker 5: a lot less bumpy than it often is.
[1:39] Speaker 6: Just a minute, McGee. What's all this about the Prudential's
[1:42] Speaker 6: education plan?
[1:43] Speaker 4: I was just going to tell the folks, Molly. It's
[1:45] Speaker 4: an education plan.
[1:46] Speaker 5: provided by the Prudential Insurance Company, and it's the sure
[1:49] Speaker 5: and easy way for you parents to cover your youngsters'
[1:52] Speaker 5: college expenses when the time comes. With this plan, you
[1:55] Speaker 5: can start building that education fund now, little by little,
[1:58] Speaker 5: over the years. And if anything happens to you before
[2:01] Speaker 5: Junior's ready for college, well, the Prudential pays the amount
[2:04] Speaker 5: in full.
[2:04] Speaker 6: Well, that certainly makes sense, friends. It's the surest way
[2:08] Speaker 6: I know to start your youngsters on the road to success.
[2:11] Speaker 6: So call your prudential agent tomorrow. He'll be glad to
[2:14] Speaker 6: tell you about an education fund plan for your children.
[2:26] Speaker 3: Up until yesterday, Mr. McGee, like most substantial citizens, owned
[2:30] Speaker 3: a garbage can. Then, in one of the most baffling
[2:33] Speaker 3: mysteries of the new year, it disappeared. Quick as a flash,
[2:37] Speaker 3: our hero was off on the trail of the missing pail.
[2:40] Speaker 3: with complications which she is describing to his neighbor Wallace
[2:42] Speaker 3: Wimple right now.
[2:44] Speaker 5: So the next thing I know, this dumb Detective Dolan
[2:46] Speaker 5: is putting the handcuffs on me and dragging me.
[2:48] Speaker 4: Off to the cooler.
[2:49] Speaker 5: You?
[2:50] Speaker 7: My goodness, why did he arrest you?
[2:52] Speaker 5: Said some citizen named McGee had tipped him off that
[2:54] Speaker 5: some crook was stealing garbage cans.
[2:56] Speaker 7: Couldn't you convince him you were the said citizen, McGee?
[2:59] Speaker 5: Wimp, that copper-bound copper was such a bull-headed bull, I
[3:01] Speaker 5: couldn't convince him I had teeth if I'd have bit him.
[3:05] Speaker 5: I guess just because a guy goes around cautiously inquiring
[3:07] Speaker 5: about hot garbage cans in the second-hand store on Skid Row,
[3:10] Speaker 5: that don't mean I stole any and want to sell them.
[3:12] Speaker 8: Oh, of course not.
[3:14] Speaker 7: It might mean you want to buy one.
[3:16] Speaker 4: Why, certainly. No, I didn't want to buy one.
[3:18] Speaker 1: I just.
[3:19] Speaker 5: Well, anyhow, Molly came down and got me out, and
[3:21] Speaker 5: now I'm looking for clues again. Who the heck would
[3:23] Speaker 5: steal a garbage can, and why?
[3:26] Speaker 7: I think you have two very good questions there, Mr.
[3:28] Speaker 9: McGee. Yep.
[3:29] Speaker 7: It's hardly the sort of thing a person would steal
[3:31] Speaker 7: to take home to his girlfriend... or as a birthday
[3:34] Speaker 7: gift to his mother. Say, maybe it wasn't really stolen
[3:38] Speaker 7: at all. Maybe somebody took it by mistake and they'll
[3:41] Speaker 7: bring it back.
[3:42] Speaker 5: I already checked that possibility, Wallace. Everybody on the block
[3:46] Speaker 5: has got their own usual garbage can out back.
[3:48] Speaker 7: Well, then, maybe the garbage man took it by accident.
[3:52] Speaker 7: Maybe he just gave it a swing and forgot to
[3:54] Speaker 7: let go of the handle. They work pretty fast.
[3:56] Speaker 5: Say, now, maybe you got an idea there, Wally. I
[4:00] Speaker 5: never thought of that. I'll go look the guy up
[4:02] Speaker 5: and I better get right at it, too. I gotta
[4:04] Speaker 5: find it before Molly wants me to empty the garbage again.
[4:06] Speaker 7: Well, in the meantime, I'd be happy to share ours
[4:09] Speaker 7: with you.
[4:09] Speaker 4: Your garbage? No, thanks. We got plenty of our own.
[4:12] Speaker 7: Well, no.
[4:13] Speaker 8: I mean, I garbage can.
[4:14] Speaker 3: I know.
[4:15] Speaker 4: I just make a little bum joke. Well, thanks anyhow, Wimp,
[4:17] Speaker 4: but I'll locate ours. So long, boy.
[4:19] Speaker 9: Bye.
[4:23] Speaker 4: Never thought about maybe the garbage man took it. Pretty
[4:26] Speaker 4: sharp head on that boy, Wimp. Comes up with some
[4:28] Speaker 4: good ideas.
[4:30] Speaker 10: But.
[4:31] Speaker 5: He should have a sharp head the way his wife
[4:32] Speaker 5: keeps stropping it with a frying pan.
[4:34] Speaker 4: That poor guy's got... Hello, McGee.
[4:36] Speaker 6: Ready for your lunch now?
[4:37] Speaker 4: Nope, I'm too busy to eat now, kiddo. I'm off
[4:39] Speaker 4: to hunt up the garbage man.
[4:40] Speaker 5: I got a theory that he's the guy that's the culprit. Accidental, maybe,
[4:43] Speaker 5: but I got a hunch, you know, that he might
[4:45] Speaker 5: have thrown our garbage can on the truck and overlooked it.
[4:47] Speaker 5: Seems like a pretty difficult overlook to me. What gave
[4:50] Speaker 5: you that idea? Oh, just checking out all possible leads,
[4:53] Speaker 5: my dear. I've been around questioning the.
[4:55] Speaker 4: Neighbors all morning with no luck.
[4:57] Speaker 5: I quizzed and pried and inquis until I was green
[5:01] Speaker 5: in the face.
[5:01] Speaker 6: The expression is blue in the face, McGee.
[5:03] Speaker 4: For other people, maybe, but not for me. I was
[5:05] Speaker 4: putting Mr.
[5:06] Speaker 5: Jenninger down the street there through the third degree.
[5:07] Speaker 9: The third degree?
[5:08] Speaker 4: Yep.
[5:09] Speaker 5: He was painting his window boxes, and I guess I
[5:11] Speaker 5: got too close or something, and that's how I.
[5:12] Speaker 4: Come to get green in the face. Any of us
[5:14] Speaker 4: still show?
[5:15] Speaker 6: Let me see.
[5:16] Speaker 9: No.
[5:17] Speaker 6: But you positively glow with turpentine.
[5:19] Speaker 4: I think a guy could tell the difference between a
[5:21] Speaker 4: window box and my face.
[5:24] Speaker 6: You'd think so, but maybe he wasn't trying too hard. Now, look,
[5:27] Speaker 6: why don't you sit down and eat your lunch and
[5:29] Speaker 6: forget the whole thing, and I'll call a bond town
[5:31] Speaker 6: and order us a new can. They only cost.
[5:34] Speaker 4: Oh, no. No, sir. This is a matter of principle
[5:36] Speaker 4: with me, Molly. Oh, me.
[5:37] Speaker 5: Suppose I take this thing lying down. Suppose I let
[5:40] Speaker 5: whoever got away with our garbage can get away with it.
[5:42] Speaker 5: That'll tempt other people to steal other things from me.
[5:45] Speaker 5: And the next thing you know, they'll be taking the
[5:46] Speaker 5: shirt right off.
[5:47] Speaker 4: Of my back.
[5:48] Speaker 6: Which reminds me, the laundry came. Take that shirt off
[5:50] Speaker 6: of your back and throw it in the hamper. There's
[5:52] Speaker 6: plenty of clean ones now.
[5:53] Speaker 4: Not now, Molly. Not now.
[5:54] Speaker 9: Later.
[5:55] Speaker 4: Right now, I'm off to catch the guy that snatched
[5:57] Speaker 4: our garbage can. Oh, McGee.
[5:59] Speaker 5: This is a catch-as-catch can caper, and I'm the guy
[6:01] Speaker 5: of the can. I'll show the clever head that cabbaged
[6:03] Speaker 5: onto our container that if he thinks he can cop
[6:05] Speaker 5: that can and keep it, he can't. Because when I
[6:07] Speaker 5: corner that crummy can snatcher, I'll snatch the can right
[6:10] Speaker 5: out of his hand and holler, copper, and I'll have
[6:12] Speaker 5: them cops clap the chap in the clink before he
[6:14] Speaker 5: can blink.
[6:14] Speaker 4: And if you want to quote me, you can. Chitty-oh.
[6:27] Speaker 2: There's more fun with the McGee's shortly.
[6:29] Speaker 1: What have Viceroy's got that other filter-dipped cigarettes haven't got?
[6:33] Speaker 1: What have Viceroy's got that other filter tip cigarettes haven't got?
[6:37] Speaker 3: What have Viceroy's got that other filter tip cigarettes haven't got?
[6:40] Speaker 2: Yes, what have Viceroy's got?
[6:43] Speaker 10: The answer is 20,000 tiny filters in every Viceroy tip.
[6:47] Speaker 2: That's right.
[6:48] Speaker 10: Inside every Viceroy tip is a vast network of 20,000
[6:52] Speaker 10: individual filters to filter your smoke over and over again.
[6:57] Speaker 10: you get only the full rich taste of Viceroy's choice tobaccos.
[7:01] Speaker 10: And Viceroy's draw freely, smoothly. So the next time you
[7:05] Speaker 10: hear this question, What have Viceroy's got that other filter
[7:08] Speaker 10: tip cigarettes haven't got?
[7:09] Speaker 2: You know the answer.
[7:10] Speaker 10: 20,000 tiny filters in every Viceroy tip. No wonder more
[7:15] Speaker 10: people smoke Viceroy's than any other filter tip cigarette in
[7:18] Speaker 10: the world. Get Viceroy's today. King size filter tip. Only
[7:23] Speaker 10: a penny or two more than cigarettes without filters.
[7:36] Speaker 4: This may be the guy that works our neighborhood. Hey,
[7:38] Speaker 4: garbage man. Hey, hold it. Hold it a minute.
[7:41] Speaker 3: Sorry, sir.
[7:42] Speaker 8: If you have anything for me, leave it in your receptacle.
[7:44] Speaker 4: Hey, are you the fellow that comes to 79 Wistful.
[7:46] Speaker 9: Vista, bud?
[7:47] Speaker 8: Seventy-nine?
[7:48] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[7:48] Speaker 8: Yes, yes, indeed. I received from them.
[7:50] Speaker 5: Well, did you happen to throw our garbage can in
[7:52] Speaker 5: the truck the other day and drive off with it?
[7:54] Speaker 11: Oh, no, I'm not allowed to do that. Against the rules,
[7:56] Speaker 11: you know. We don't take the cans, just the contents. Now,
[8:00] Speaker 11: if you wish to get rid of the old can,
[8:02] Speaker 11: you can put it out for the trash collection.
[8:03] Speaker 4: I don't want to get rid.
[8:04] Speaker 8: The trash truck. Ah, that's your solution, sir. They'll take
[8:07] Speaker 8: the old garbage can.
[8:08] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[8:08] Speaker 8: They'd take anything, except garbage, of course. They're not allowed
[8:11] Speaker 8: to take garbage, just trash.
[8:12] Speaker 4: Look, I'm not trying to get rid of.
[8:14] Speaker 8: That's why they call it the trash truck. They truck trash,
[8:16] Speaker 8: do you see?
[8:17] Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, but I'm not.
[8:18] Speaker 11: Their job is anything that isn't garbage, and it's uncombustible
[8:21] Speaker 11: rubbish they take.
[8:22] Speaker 8: Now, if it's combustible, you have to burn it, you see?
[8:25] Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, that's all very interesting, Si, but I'm not
[8:27] Speaker 5: trying to get rid of a garbage can.
[8:29] Speaker 4: Our can is gone. That's the whole thing.
[8:31] Speaker 11: Oh, well, thank you, sir. Let me know when you
[8:33] Speaker 11: get a new one, and I'll start retrieving again. No
[8:36] Speaker 11: use stopping here if you have no container. Thanks a
[8:39] Speaker 11: lot for the trouble of telling me, sir. You're very considerate.
[8:42] Speaker 3: Ta-ta. Yeah, but.
[8:44] Speaker 4: Hey, wait a.
[8:47] Speaker 4: For the love of Mike. Big lot of help he was.
[8:50] Speaker 9: Who was, mister? Who? Huh? Oh.
[8:52] Speaker 4: Oh, hi, Teenie. I didn't see you there.
[8:54] Speaker 3: Hi.
[8:56] Speaker 9: Who was the big lot of help, Mr.
[8:58] Speaker 4: McGee?
[8:58] Speaker 9: Who was it? What'd he do? Who?
[9:00] Speaker 5: Ah, that garbage man. Tried to get some information out
[9:03] Speaker 5: of the guy and all he gets confused. Hey, you
[9:06] Speaker 5: get around a lot, Teenie. Have you seen anything of
[9:08] Speaker 5: a nice new garbage can about so high around the neighborhood?
[9:11] Speaker 2: Sure.
[9:13] Speaker 9: Sure I have, I betcha. You mean your garbage can?
[9:16] Speaker 9: Your new one?
[9:17] Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, that's it. Where is it? Where'd you see it?
[9:19] Speaker 4: Do you remember?
[9:19] Speaker 9: Sure I do.
[9:20] Speaker 2: Good.
[9:20] Speaker 9: I was walking down the alley and a man showed
[9:24] Speaker 9: it to me.
[9:25] Speaker 4: Aha, now we're getting someplace. Who was the man? You remember? You.
[9:29] Speaker 3: Huh?
[9:31] Speaker 9: Oh, Tini.
[9:31] Speaker 10: Yeah.
[9:32] Speaker 9: Don't you remember? You said, look at our new garbage can, Tini.
[9:35] Speaker 9: I just bought it. And I said, oh, that's beautiful.
[9:39] Speaker 4: And you said... Oh, skip it, Tini. Skip it. You're
[9:41] Speaker 4: no help either. That garbage can is gone. Disappeared.
[9:46] Speaker 3: Oh.
[9:46] Speaker 4: Just vanished into thin air.
[9:49] Speaker 9: Gee, that's a good trick, I betcha. Did you do it?
[9:52] Speaker 9: Did you make it vanish, Mr. Who, did you?
[9:55] Speaker 4: Me? Of course not. Why would I do that?
[9:58] Speaker 9: I don't know. Only my daddy says you can make
[10:00] Speaker 9: people vanish. So if you can make people vanish, you
[10:02] Speaker 9: could easily make a garbage can.
[10:04] Speaker 4: Oh, now hold, hold, hold, hold, hold everything. Hold. Your
[10:07] Speaker 4: daddy says what?
[10:08] Speaker 9: He says you're a good vanisher.
[10:10] Speaker 4: Uh-huh.
[10:11] Speaker 9: He says when you walk into the Elks Club full
[10:13] Speaker 9: of people and just open your mouth to talk, everybody
[10:17] Speaker 9: in the place disappears before you can snap your fingers.
[10:22] Speaker 5: Well, now you just tell your old.
[10:24] Speaker 9: Hey, that's a wonderful trick, Mr. McGavish. Will you do
[10:27] Speaker 9: that for me sometime? Will you make people vanish sometime?
[10:31] Speaker 4: Well, not today. You run along now. I gotta think.
[10:35] Speaker 9: Okay. So many bad stones, garbage can. Garbage can, garbage can.
[10:40] Speaker 9: So many bad stones, garbage can.
[10:43] Speaker 8: Oh, what do we do?
[10:45] Speaker 3: Oh, what do we do?
[10:55] Speaker 9: Is that you, McGee?
[10:56] Speaker 4: Yeah, that's me. Your wore-out, disgusted, bedraggled, footed, hungry husband.
[11:00] Speaker 6: Didn't find hide in her hair of it, did you?
[11:02] Speaker 5: No, I give up. You can call the Bonton and
[11:05] Speaker 5: order a new one. Soon as you put on something to.
[11:07] Speaker 4: Eat for me.
[11:09] Speaker 6: Oh, I don't know about ordering another one.
[11:11] Speaker 5: Well, don't depend on me to find the one that
[11:12] Speaker 5: was stole we lost. I know when I'm licked. I
[11:15] Speaker 5: looked high and low. I even put myself into a
[11:18] Speaker 5: trance and said, now, where would I go if I
[11:20] Speaker 5: was a garbage can?
[11:21] Speaker 6: And where'd you go?
[11:21] Speaker 5: Almost down an open manhole. I forgot to come out
[11:24] Speaker 5: of the dad-dreaded trance. I must have questioned half the
[11:27] Speaker 5: people on this side of town, and I got no place.
[11:30] Speaker 5: So go on, buy a new one.
[11:31] Speaker 6: Well, that won't be necessary, dearie. Keep your coat on.
[11:34] Speaker 6: Come out with me.
[11:35] Speaker 4: Where are we going?
[11:36] Speaker 6: Come on.
[11:38] Speaker 4: Oh, out back. What for? Did you find anything? Well,
[11:40] Speaker 4: what is it?
[11:41] Speaker 6: If you'll just follow me and hold your horse, as
[11:43] Speaker 6: you will soon see.
[11:44] Speaker 3: See there? Why?
[11:47] Speaker 6: Our garbage can.
[11:47] Speaker 2: It's back.
[11:49] Speaker 6: Just like Les said yesterday. Someone must have taken it
[11:51] Speaker 6: by mistake and now they've returned it.
[11:54] Speaker 4: Yeah, looks like.
[11:55] Speaker 6: Thank goodness it's all settled and am I glad this
[11:57] Speaker 6: silly thing is over. Come on in now. What are
[12:00] Speaker 6: you doing?
[12:00] Speaker 4: I'm just looking it over.
[12:02] Speaker 5: There's something mighty peculiar about this.
[12:06] Speaker 4: Aha.
[12:07] Speaker 3: Look.
[12:08] Speaker 4: Look at this stencil on the bottom.
[12:10] Speaker 6: Harper's Hardware.
[12:10] Speaker 4: This ain't our bantan can. This is a brand new one.
[12:13] Speaker 6: Well, good for us.
[12:14] Speaker 5: Now let's... Somebody's pulled a switch. What was there about
[12:17] Speaker 5: our garbage can that made him steal it? And then
[12:20] Speaker 5: when I kicked up such a fuss all over town,
[12:22] Speaker 5: the guilty party tries to bribe me by buying me
[12:24] Speaker 5: a new one.
[12:24] Speaker 6: Who cares? Let's forget the.
[12:26] Speaker 4: Bye, George.
[12:26] Speaker 5: This thing has got my back up now. I'll never
[12:29] Speaker 5: quit now. I'm going to get to the bottom of
[12:31] Speaker 5: this mystery if it takes till next New Year's. Nobody's
[12:34] Speaker 5: going to steal my garbage can and try to shut
[12:36] Speaker 5: me up with a better one because I won't.
[12:37] Speaker 9: Yes, but.
[12:38] Speaker 3: Bye, George. We'll say goodnight to Fibber and Molly in
[12:49] Speaker 3: a moment. The actress of fire and ice is a
[12:53] Speaker 3: woman of passion and fears. In this one revealing sentence
[12:57] Speaker 3: lies the heart of Joan Crawford's own story. You'll want
[13:00] Speaker 3: to read her intimate article, The Story I've Never Told,
[13:04] Speaker 3: in the February issue of Woman's Home Companion. Joan tells
[13:07] Speaker 3: about the men she has loved and why her three
[13:10] Speaker 3: marriages failed. She answers the question, will she ever marry again?
[13:14] Speaker 3: And what she wants in a man. Joan Crawford's own
[13:17] Speaker 3: story is a stirring account of her triumphs, failures, and
[13:21] Speaker 3: hopes for the future. A dramatic story no woman should miss.
[13:25] Speaker 3: And in the same issue, every mother will want to
[13:27] Speaker 3: read Fanny B.J. Mastin's informative article, What I Teach Teenagers
[13:32] Speaker 3: About Love, Sex, and Marriage. Should teenagers go steady? Should
[13:36] Speaker 3: they marry early? Should they kiss on the first date?
[13:40] Speaker 3: Read Miss Mastin's approach to these difficult questions in the
[13:42] Speaker 3: current issue of Woman's Home Companion, now at your newsstand.
[13:46] Speaker 2: You just can't afford to miss it.
[13:56] Speaker 6: McGee, what are you doing with the telephone book this
[13:58] Speaker 6: time of night?
