Fibber’s temporary work with Quilby’s Variety Store inspires another big promotional idea: a radio advertising campaign. As he tries to drum up business, Molly and the familiar Wistful Vista crowd—including Arthur Q. Bryan, Bill Thompson, and John Wald—are drawn into his latest scheme. Fibber McGee and Molly presents the original broadcast with a newly produced contextual introduction, a short closing announcement, and gently cleaned/mastered audio for a more consistent listening experience. [0:00] Speaker 1: Fibber McGee's latest effort to increase business at Quilby's Variety
[0:04] Speaker 1: Store is a proposal for a radio advertising campaign. It
[0:08] Speaker 1: is March 15, 1954, and NBC brings us a 15-minute
[0:13] Speaker 1: installment of Fibber McGee and Molly, Further Business Promotions, Episode 856.
[0:21] Speaker 1: Jim and Marion Jordan are heard as Fibber and Molly
[0:25] Speaker 1: with Arthur Q. Bryan, Bill Thompson, and John Wald in
[0:29] Speaker 1: the cast. The March 12th broadcast also found Fibber promoting
[0:34] Speaker 1: the store as this short connected run continues. We now
[0:38] Speaker 1: take you back to the original broadcast.
[0:43] Speaker 2: The Fibber McGee and Molly show.
[0:44] Speaker 3: The Fibber McGee and Molly show.
[0:54] Speaker 4: Every weekday at this time, NBC brings you Feather McGee
[0:58] Speaker 4: and Molly Transcribe. The show is written by Phil Leslie
[1:01] Speaker 4: and Ralph Goodman and directed by Matt Tuttle. We will
[1:11] Speaker 4: join Feather and Molly in just a moment. If a
[1:15] Speaker 4: neighbor in distress came to your door, would you help him?
[1:18] Speaker 5: Of course you would.
[1:19] Speaker 4: But not everyone who needs help can come to you personally.
[1:23] Speaker 4: It may be a flood victim in Ohio, the victim
[1:25] Speaker 4: of an earthquake in California, of a hurricane in Texas,
[1:29] Speaker 4: or it might be your boy or your neighbor's boy
[1:32] Speaker 4: in Korea needing an emergency furlough to come home. Disaster
[1:36] Speaker 4: can strike in many places and for as many reasons.
[1:39] Speaker 4: And when it does strike, even though you might not
[1:41] Speaker 4: be there to help in person, you can help through
[1:44] Speaker 4: your Red Cross. That's why the Red Cross volunteer calls
[1:47] Speaker 4: on you. He calls in the name of the helpless
[1:50] Speaker 4: and injured, of the little girl who needs blood to
[1:52] Speaker 4: save her life, of the serviceman who must fly to
[1:55] Speaker 4: the bedside of his dangerously ill-parented child. When you join
[1:59] Speaker 4: the Red Cross, you help them all wherever they may be.
[2:02] Speaker 4: So when the Red Cross volunteer comes to your door,
[2:05] Speaker 4: meet him with a smile and answer the call. Join
[2:08] Speaker 4: and serve. And wear your Red Cross buttons proudly. It
[2:11] Speaker 4: means that in any emergency, in any disaster, you are
[2:14] Speaker 4: there serving humanity. A week ago, Mr. McGee volunteered to
[2:27] Speaker 4: operate Toby's Variety Store for a while. So the owner
[2:31] Speaker 4: could take a much-needed rest and look for a pigeon
[2:33] Speaker 4: to buy the place. For a brief rundown on the
[2:36] Speaker 4: retail business, stay tuned to Phoebe McGee and Molly.
[2:38] Speaker 2: You heard about that raffle I ran Friday? We took
[2:41] Speaker 2: in over 80 bucks. And with the sale we had Saturday,
[2:43] Speaker 2: it just goes to show all this price means is
[2:45] Speaker 2: my idea. This joint could be a goldmine.
[2:48] Speaker 5: Really?
[2:48] Speaker 2: If this was a goldmine, your chick would have a
[2:50] Speaker 2: broken hounder.
[2:51] Speaker 5: So let's not get it.
[2:53] Speaker 6: I'm curious, kiddo.
[2:55] Speaker 2: I've been thinking about it. And from where I'm sitting,
[2:57] Speaker 2: this Quilby Variety Store looks like a good investment.
[3:00] Speaker 3: Miss Quilby said she'd.
[3:01] Speaker 2: Take a thousand bucks for it, and boy, I could
[3:03] Speaker 2: make a mint.
[3:03] Speaker 5: McGee, I don't like to be a wet blanket.
[3:06] Speaker 3: But if we did lose our heads and decide to
[3:08] Speaker 3: buy the place, and if we did, we deserve to
[3:10] Speaker 3: lose our heads, sling it down to the shoulders, where
[3:13] Speaker 3: would we get a thousand dollars?
[3:15] Speaker 2: Gettin' the money ain't important.
[3:16] Speaker 3: The main reason it is is runnin' the business and
[3:17] Speaker 3: eatin' ideas.
[3:18] Speaker 2: And I got a name in it.
[3:20] Speaker 5: I know.
[3:20] Speaker 3: First thing this store needs is publicity.
[3:22] Speaker 2: Promotions. Tell the public about Quilby's Variety Store. Make them
[3:25] Speaker 2: Quilby concerts. Advertise.
[3:27] Speaker 3: All of which got money.
[3:28] Speaker 2: Ha ha, but not the way I do it. I
[3:31] Speaker 2: got a promotion sent today that's gonna make Quilby's.
[3:33] Speaker 3: A household word.
[3:35] Speaker 2: Like the best pickle sauce. Right, only hot. I'm going
[3:39] Speaker 2: to cover this town by radio.
[3:40] Speaker 5: Radio? Oh, McGee, a radio show costs money. We can't
[3:44] Speaker 5: sponsor it.
[3:44] Speaker 3: Don't you worry.
[3:45] Speaker 2: This won't cost us a thing.
[3:46] Speaker 5: I got a gimmick.
[3:47] Speaker 2: The radio station won't even know about it. I'm going
[3:50] Speaker 2: down to WBIS and... Hey, what time is it?
[3:52] Speaker 4: 10.30.
[3:52] Speaker 3: Oh, my gosh, I've.
[3:53] Speaker 2: Got to stand. I've got to be over at the
[3:56] Speaker 2: radio station at 11 o'clock. I've got to go by
[3:59] Speaker 2: Wink House first. You can handle the store, okay, till
[4:02] Speaker 2: I get back. Be sure and tune in WBIS at
[4:03] Speaker 2: 11 o'clock now.
[4:04] Speaker 3: I haven't got time to explain it now.
[4:07] Speaker 5: Tune in WBIS at 11. You'll find out. You're right, kiddo.
[4:09] Speaker 5: WBIS at 11 o'clock. Oh, dear. Yes, Mr.
[4:14] Speaker 7: Lambert, tell me more.
[4:22] Speaker 5: Well, that's all. Mr.
[4:23] Speaker 3: McGee just said he wanted to borrow them, grab them,
[4:30] Speaker 3: bring him back later.
[4:31] Speaker 5: Is that what the riding boots you took?
[4:33] Speaker 3: No, they weren't mine. My boots were too small. He
[4:36] Speaker 3: bought a few pieces.
[4:38] Speaker 5: You're right. They're too high on the jeans size.
[4:40] Speaker 7: Yeah.
[4:41] Speaker 3: He's a big one.
[4:42] Speaker 5: I just can't imagine why McGee would buy Mr. Ripple's
[4:46] Speaker 5: riding boots, can you?
[4:47] Speaker 3: Yeah, at first I thought maybe it was the kind
[4:50] Speaker 3: of animal's week and he was going riding. But I
[4:52] Speaker 3: looked it up and it isn't. Just drop everything and
[4:55] Speaker 3: make out that toxic thing and mail it in if
[4:57] Speaker 3: you know what's good for your week. Say, that can't
[5:00] Speaker 3: be it.
[5:00] Speaker 5: Well, he went out of here in a big hurry,
[5:02] Speaker 5: but oh, looks like we have a customer.
[5:04] Speaker 3: Oh, Dr.
[5:05] Speaker 7: Gans.
[5:05] Speaker 5: Hello, doctor. Is there something I can do? There certainly is.
[5:08] Speaker 3: You can tell me where that deaf husband of yours is, Molly.
[5:12] Speaker 3: If I get my hands on him.
[5:13] Speaker 5: You didn't approach the trouble, doctor.
[5:15] Speaker 3: He ducked into my office a while ago while I
[5:17] Speaker 3: was painting a sore throat, and he walked off with
[5:18] Speaker 3: my camera and my brand new deer rifle.
[5:21] Speaker 6: What?
[5:21] Speaker 3: Yelled something over his shoulder that I'd bring it back
[5:23] Speaker 3: later and scrammed. That gun cost $ 200, and if he... Well,
[5:27] Speaker 3: I was telling you what's going on. He borrowed Mrs.
[5:31] Speaker 3: Wimple's riding boots, and now you're going in camera. Uh,
[5:34] Speaker 3: you two didn't have a toy, did you, Mrs.
[5:36] Speaker 1: McGee?
[5:36] Speaker 5: No, why?
[5:38] Speaker 3: Well, he might be running away to join us on
[5:40] Speaker 3: an evening. I'm glad he took a camera. I'd love
[5:43] Speaker 3: to see how he looks in his new uniform. You'd
[5:45] Speaker 3: better bring that gun back before he joins any party.
[5:47] Speaker 5: No, no, no, Dr.
[5:48] Speaker 7: Gamble.
[5:48] Speaker 3: He's not joining the Legion.
[5:50] Speaker 5: When he left here, he said he was going to
[5:51] Speaker 5: the radio station. But what he wants is a camera.
[5:53] Speaker 5: A radio station? Oh, my goodness. What time is it?
[5:56] Speaker 2: Five after 11.
[5:57] Speaker 3: Why?
[5:57] Speaker 5: Just grab that little radio there and plug it in.
[5:59] Speaker 5: Turn it on.
[5:59] Speaker 3: It's morning.
[6:00] Speaker 5: You're very up, Doctor. You told me 11 o'clock. Oh,
[6:02] Speaker 5: I hope we're not too late to find out what
[6:04] Speaker 5: this is.
[6:14] Speaker 4: Back to us for this there in a minute. A
[6:18] Speaker 4: cynic once remarked two things are.
[6:19] Speaker 6: Inevitable for death in taxes.
[6:22] Speaker 4: Maybe you feel that you personally can't do much about
[6:24] Speaker 4: reducing taxes, but you most certainly can do something.
[6:27] Speaker 3: About reducing the yearly death toll.
[6:29] Speaker 4: Smoking in bed, for instance, may be fun, but it
[6:32] Speaker 4: can also be dangerous. Your troubles seem far away when
[6:35] Speaker 4: you're seen into a fog of smoke as you lie
[6:37] Speaker 4: back relaxed. When out you go like a light, but
[6:40] Speaker 4: not your cigarettes The cigarette slips from your hand and
[6:43] Speaker 4: finds plenty of fuel for a fire with you in
[6:45] Speaker 4: the middle. Carelessness, such as falling asleep while smoking in bed,
[6:50] Speaker 4: is responsible for 90% of America's fires. And every 20
[6:53] Speaker 4: seconds throughout the year, a fire breaks out somewhere in
[6:56] Speaker 4: the United States. Of the 4,600 fires daily, almost 1,000
[7:00] Speaker 4: take place in homes, destroying about 340,000 homes annually. The
[7:04] Speaker 4: loss of property in the United States because of fires
[7:07] Speaker 4: is about $ 7.
[7:07] Speaker 6: Million a year.
[7:10] Speaker 4: You can help reduce this appalling and unnecessary waste by
[7:12] Speaker 4: observing simple safety rules.
[7:24] Speaker 5: W-D-I-S, Doctor. That's it.
[7:25] Speaker 3: Well, I'm trying to get it, but.
[7:27] Speaker 5: I don't understand.
[7:29] Speaker 3: When he left here, he said he was going to
[7:31] Speaker 3: get some free advertising on the radio.
[7:33] Speaker 5: Said tune in W-D-I-S at 11.
[7:34] Speaker 3: W-D-I-S? Well, that's Marty Dufferty's parking party. It's a very
[7:38] Speaker 3: popular show.
[7:39] Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
[7:40] Speaker 3: But it's already sponsored. It's a bombshell department store. I
[7:43] Speaker 3: know Marty, and he doesn't give away anything for free.
[7:46] Speaker 3: He's a very sweet character. He's already sold his appendix
[7:49] Speaker 3: to the medical school, and I haven't even taken it
[7:51] Speaker 3: out yet.
[7:52] Speaker 5: Wait for now.
[7:54] Speaker 4: And that was Ralph Flanagan and his orchestra and Stranger
[7:57] Speaker 4: in Paradise. And now for the high spot of the week,
[8:00] Speaker 4: your favorite Monday feature, Men of Action. This week's guest
[8:03] Speaker 4: is a man who has spent most of the last
[8:05] Speaker 4: 20 years traveling.
[8:06] Speaker 6: And writing in Africa.
[8:07] Speaker 5: What's this all about?
[8:08] Speaker 6: I met this adventurer this morning quite by accident.
[8:11] Speaker 4: And when you hear the fabulous experiences he's had in
[8:13] Speaker 4: his travels through Africa with writing boots, gun, and camera,
[8:16] Speaker 4: I'm sure you'll be as taken with the man as
[8:18] Speaker 4: I was.
[8:19] Speaker 3: Why do you need a gun and a camera?
[8:21] Speaker 5: Oh, Marty, have you been taken? I give you now
[8:23] Speaker 5: this week's man of action, Mr.
[8:25] Speaker 6: Slabber McSpeed.
[8:25] Speaker 2: That's McGee, bud.
[8:26] Speaker 6: Oh, sorry.
[8:27] Speaker 4: Mr.
[8:27] Speaker 6: Slabber McGee.
[8:28] Speaker 4: Tell us, Mr.
[8:28] Speaker 6: McSpeed, how does it feel to be back in the States?
[8:31] Speaker 4: States?
[8:31] Speaker 6: Oh!
[8:31] Speaker 5: Oh, fine, Marty.
[8:36] Speaker 2: A little quiet, of course, after the excitement I'm used to,
[8:38] Speaker 2: hunting wild game.
[8:39] Speaker 3: Oh, brother, the wildest game you ever saw was hide-and-seek.
[8:42] Speaker 2: Listen, Doctor.
[8:43] Speaker 6: But he came for a man like you, I suppose.
[8:45] Speaker 3: I wonder how he expects to get any free advertising.
[8:46] Speaker 6: I'm sure our audience would like to hear some of
[8:48] Speaker 6: your adventures, Mr.
[8:49] Speaker 5: McSpeed.
[8:50] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I'm sure they would. Well, sir, I guess
[8:53] Speaker 2: the most unusual experience I had was at Quilby's Outpost back.
[8:56] Speaker 5: There in Africa.
[8:57] Speaker 6: That's Q-U-I-L-B-Y-F-R-C-O-B-Y, Quilby's.
[9:03] Speaker 3: Oh, isn't he fly?
[9:04] Speaker 6: I'd rather you didn't mention names like that, Mr. McPhee.
[9:07] Speaker 6: You see, our sponsor is the great Fontan Department Store.
[9:10] Speaker 4: Oh.
[9:11] Speaker 6: Well, that name you mentioned just happens to be another
[9:13] Speaker 6: business concern here in town.
[9:15] Speaker 2: Oh, that's all.
[9:15] Speaker 6: Yes, just a coincidence. It's Croix.
[9:18] Speaker 5: Croix, huh?
[9:18] Speaker 2: You mean that friendly variety store at 13th and Oak
[9:21] Speaker 2: where you can buy on credit?
[9:22] Speaker 5: Oak with Friday nights till 9, parking in the rear?
[9:25] Speaker 7: Oh, Mr.
[9:25] Speaker 4: McPhee.
[9:25] Speaker 6: You were telling me about your experience in Africa.
[9:29] Speaker 1: Why are you killing me?
[9:30] Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, yeah.
[9:31] Speaker 2: Well, sir, I was on a safari out of Johannesburg.
[9:34] Speaker 2: That's just east of Quilby, which is a good name
[9:36] Speaker 2: to remember. You know what a safari is, don't you?
[9:38] Speaker 6: Oh, yes, of course.
[9:39] Speaker 2: Yeah, I just wondered.
[9:40] Speaker 6: It's not a very.
[9:41] Speaker 2: Well-known animal in the States, and a lot of people
[9:43] Speaker 2: never saw one, but... Like I say, I was sitting
[9:46] Speaker 2: on my faithful.
[9:46] Speaker 6: Old safari, riding down the trail.
[9:49] Speaker 2: When all at once this huge, gigantic lion.
[9:51] Speaker 5: Left out in front of me.
[9:52] Speaker 6: Well, that sounds pretty frightening.
[9:54] Speaker 2: Well, sir, he opened his mouth and there he stands.
[9:56] Speaker 2: And when I looked at that mouthful of gleaming crockery,
[9:59] Speaker 2: it reminded me of that window full of beautiful crockery
[10:02] Speaker 2: at Kirby's Variety Store at 13th and Oak where they've
[10:04] Speaker 2: got a sale on dishes all this time.
[10:06] Speaker 6: Oh, that's fine, that's fine. Well, our time is running
[10:08] Speaker 6: a little short here.
[10:09] Speaker 2: We're a little late, folks, but before I go, I
[10:11] Speaker 2: want to sing an African song for you. The war
[10:13] Speaker 2: chant of the secret and.
[10:14] Speaker 6: Mysterious Yakahula tribe in darkest Africa. Oh, an African war chant, eh? Well,
[10:18] Speaker 6: we can take time for that, all right.
[10:20] Speaker 2: Yeah, it's very interesting. They all gather around in a
[10:22] Speaker 2: circle and they beat their feet, you see.
[10:24] Speaker 6: And then they chant.
[10:25] Speaker 2: Like this.
[10:26] Speaker 5: Ho, ho, ho, hey.
[10:27] Speaker 2: Chop them kibble, some old hay. Chop them kibble, go today.
[10:31] Speaker 5: Just a minute.
[10:32] Speaker 6: Find shops and pay on time.
[10:34] Speaker 5: Open Friday night till nine.
[10:36] Speaker 7: Kibble's up there, two.
[10:37] Speaker 5: Down, okay.
[10:39] Speaker 3: Chop some bargain, I think it's no joke.
[10:42] Speaker 5: Chop them kibble, two down, okay. Oh, yeah, hope they
[10:45] Speaker 5: don't hate me.
[10:51] Speaker 7: Yeah, man, they threw me out in the alley.
[11:03] Speaker 2: But I bet I got the whole town talking about crowbeats, kiddo. Yeah, man. Well,
[11:06] Speaker 2: it was wicked. The good thing nothing happened to Dr.
[11:10] Speaker 4: Eiffel.
[11:10] Speaker 3: Oh, boy, isn't he mad? I don't blame him. Imagine
[11:12] Speaker 3: taking his camera and a brand new rifle.
[11:14] Speaker 2: No, I mean Marty. Marty died. Oh, I'll get even
[11:18] Speaker 2: with you if it's the last thing I do, Mr. Eiffel.
[11:21] Speaker 3: It's on the radio, aren't you?
[11:23] Speaker 2: Let's see what he has to say. I lost him
[11:26] Speaker 2: when I climbed over that fence in Kramer's Alley, so
[11:28] Speaker 2: he should be back at the station by now.
[11:29] Speaker 5: I hope nothing comes of it.
[11:32] Speaker 6: Hello, this is Marty Dorothy, speaking for the Bonsound Department Store.
[11:37] Speaker 4: I'm sorry I wasn't here to announce those last state records,
[11:39] Speaker 4: but a little matter came up that demanded my personal attention.
[11:43] Speaker 2: Probably the president of the bomb town asking him what happened.
[11:46] Speaker 6: As you all know, there was a Mr. Flamber McPhee
[11:49] Speaker 6: in here a while ago.
[11:50] Speaker 2: McPhee, he doesn't know your right name.
[11:51] Speaker 3: He was telling me.
[11:52] Speaker 6: About Colby's Variety Store, but he was rudely interrupted before
[11:55] Speaker 6: he had.
[11:55] Speaker 5: A chance to finish.
[11:56] Speaker 2: Oh, you can say that again. Them guys nearly tore
[11:58] Speaker 2: the lapels off of my teeth. Before Mr.
[12:00] Speaker 6: McPhee left, however, he asked me to give our listeners
[12:03] Speaker 6: this message.
[12:03] Speaker 4: Message? Quilby's Variety Store is making a special introductory offer
[12:07] Speaker 4: this week only.
[12:07] Speaker 5: What's he talking about, Bill?
[12:08] Speaker 2: I don't know. I don't know.
[12:09] Speaker 1: We don't get.
[12:10] Speaker 6: All the merchandise at Quilby's is free.
[12:13] Speaker 2: Free?
[12:13] Speaker 6: Just go in and check out what you want and
[12:15] Speaker 6: take it home. But hurry. Only 30 articles to a customer. What?
[12:17] Speaker 5: Why that dirty no-good?
[12:19] Speaker 6: That's Quilby's at 13th and Oak. Be sure to mention Mr.
[12:21] Speaker 2: McPhee.
[12:22] Speaker 6: Take anything you want.
[12:24] Speaker 5: Oh, my God. That rat.
[12:25] Speaker 2: Lock the door, Molly.
[12:26] Speaker 5: Pull down the cage. I'll get the clothes signed.
[12:28] Speaker 3: Help me shove a counter against the door before that
[12:30] Speaker 3: mob gets here.
[12:31] Speaker 5: Oh, that dirty dog is here.
[12:37] Speaker 4: Peter and Molly will be right back. You'll enjoy the
[12:46] Speaker 4: thrill-filled entertainment that's yours for the listening each Tuesday evening
[12:49] Speaker 4: on the NBC Radio Network. There's comedy intermingled with murder
[12:53] Speaker 4: each Tuesday evening when Frank Sinatra portrays footloose and fancy-free
[12:56] Speaker 4: Rocky Fortune. Every week, Rocky finds himself a new and
[12:59] Speaker 4: exciting job, and his continually changing occupations each bring another
[13:03] Speaker 4: program packed with post-paced adventure. Listen every Tuesday evening to
[13:07] Speaker 4: Frank Sinatra as Rocky Fortune. Then for two-fisted private detective work,
[13:12] Speaker 4: call on Barry Craig as portrayed by William Gargan. You'll
[13:15] Speaker 4: enjoy every action-packed moment of Barry Craig. So be sure
[13:18] Speaker 4: to tune in here tomorrow for another of his rough-and-cumble
[13:21] Speaker 4: encounters of mystery and intrigue. Also on Tuesday, tune to
[13:24] Speaker 4: the NBC radio network for Dragnet. Dragnet, the true stories
[13:28] Speaker 4: of your police force in action. From crime to punishment,
[13:31] Speaker 4: Dragnet takes you step by step on the side of
[13:33] Speaker 4: the law in the solution of an actual crime. Dragnet,
[13:36] Speaker 4: starring Jack Webb as Sergeant Joe Friday, is one of
[13:38] Speaker 4: the week's finest radio shows.
[13:40] Speaker 6: Hear it tomorrow.
[13:42] Speaker 4: Dragnet.
[13:49] Speaker 2: There was a mob already starting to bang on the
[13:51] Speaker 2: front door when we ran out the back, now.
