[0:05] Hello everyone, and welcome back to Simple English Podcast.
[0:08] I'm Lisa, your host, and today we're diving into a really
[0:10] important topic, protecting the environment.
[0:14] We hear about climate change, pollution, and deforestation all
[0:17] the time, but why should we as individuals care?
[0:20] And what can we actually do about it?
[0:22] To help answer these questions, I'm joined by Alex, who's an
[0:26] environmental expert and passionate about sustainability.
[0:30] Don't forget to check out the free PDF file in the comments
[0:33] section below to get the full transcript and new vocabulary
[0:36] for this episode. Hi, Alex.
[0:39] Thanks for joining us today. Hey Lisa, thanks for having me.
[0:44] I'm really excited to be here and talk about something that's
[0:46] so close to my heart. Awesome.
[0:49] So let's not waste any time and jump right into it.
[0:52] All right, Alex, I think a lot of people feel overwhelmed by
[0:56] all the talk about environmental problems.
[0:59] From your perspective, why is protecting the environment so
[1:02] important? You're right Lisa, there's a lot
[1:05] of information out there and it can be overwhelming.
[1:08] But the truth is the environment effects everything in our lives.
[1:12] We depend on nature for basics like food, water, and clean air.
[1:17] Without a healthy environment, it becomes harder to live a
[1:20] healthy life. Protecting it is really about
[1:23] protecting ourselves and future generations.
[1:27] That's a great point. Sometimes it feels like the
[1:30] environment is something separate from us, but we're
[1:32] really part of it, right? Exactly.
[1:35] We're part of the same system. When we pollute the air, we're
[1:39] breathing that air. When we harm ecosystems, we're
[1:42] affecting the food chain that we rely on.
[1:45] So it's all interconnected. One example is climate change.
[1:50] As the planet warms, we're seeing more extreme weather.
[1:54] Floods, heat waves, wildfires. These events directly impact our
[1:59] lives, our homes, our food supply, and even our health.
[2:04] And we're already seeing those changes now, right?
[2:07] It's not just something that will happen in the future.
[2:11] Absolutely. It's not a future problem.
[2:13] It's happening right now. We're seeing glaciers melt,
[2:17] rising sea levels, stronger storms and more droughts in many
[2:22] parts of the world. Just look at the wildfires we've
[2:25] had recently. These are warning signs that our
[2:28] environment is changing rapidly and we need to act now to slow
[2:32] it down. So what are some of the most
[2:35] critical things we need to do to help protect the environment?
[2:39] Can regular people really make a difference?
[2:41] Yes, absolutely. It can feel like individual
[2:46] actions are small, but when millions of people make small
[2:49] changes, it adds up. One of the easiest ways to start
[2:54] is by reducing waste. Simple things like using
[2:58] reusable bags, bottles and containers can reduce the amount
[3:02] of plastic pollution in our oceans.
[3:05] Another important step is cutting down on energy
[3:08] consumption. Using energy efficient
[3:11] appliances, turning off lights when you don't need them, and
[3:15] supporting renewable energy sources are all effective ways
[3:19] to reduce your carbon footprint. Those are great tips, but what
[3:23] about things we can't control, like big industries and
[3:26] corporations? How do they fit into this?
[3:29] That's a good question. Big industries do play a huge
[3:33] role and they're responsible for a large part of the world's
[3:36] pollution. But change can happen when we as
[3:40] consumers demand more sustainable practices.
[3:44] Support businesses that use eco friendly products or energy.
[3:49] Also, it's important to use your voice.
[3:52] Vote for leaders and policies that prioritize Environmental
[3:55] Protection. Governments can create
[3:58] regulations that hold companies accountable, and public pressure
[4:02] can push corporations to act more responsibly.
[4:05] So it's a combination of individual action and larger
[4:10] systemic changes. Exactly.
[4:13] We need both to make real progress.
[4:15] When individuals push for change, it creates a ripple
[4:19] effect that influences industries and governments.
[4:22] Every action counts. All right, Alex, now it's time
[4:26] for our fun fact segment. Can you share a cool or
[4:30] surprising fact about the environment with us?
[4:33] Sure. Here's a fun one.
[4:35] Did you know that sloths are great environmentalists?
[4:38] They're so slow that algae grows on their fur.
[4:42] This actually helps them blend into their surroundings and
[4:45] avoid predators. And on top of that, the algae in
[4:49] their fur helps purify the air by absorbing carbon dioxide.
[4:54] So sloths are not only adorable, but also doing their part for
[4:58] the planet. That is amazing.
[5:01] Who would have thought sloths were so eco friendly?
[5:04] They're like tiny green warriors.
[5:06] And it just goes to show how nature has its own systems for
[5:09] balance and we can learn a lot from it.
[5:12] Well, Alex, thank you so much for sharing your insights with
[5:15] us today. I think you've really helped
[5:17] break down why protecting the environment is something we
[5:20] should all care about, and you've shown that it's not as
[5:23] overwhelming as it seems. Thanks, Lisa.
[5:26] It was great to be here, and I hope listeners feel encouraged
[5:30] to take small steps toward helping the environment.
[5:33] Every action we take matters, no matter how small it may seem.
[5:38] Definitely. So to our listeners, let's
[5:41] remember, whether it's reducing plastic use, saving energy, or
[5:46] pushing for larger policy changes, we all have a role to
[5:49] play in protecting the planet. Together, we can make a
[5:52] difference. Now it's time to learn some
[6:01] important vocabulary related to the topic.
[6:04] Environment. Sustainability Definition.
[6:09] The ability to maintain or preserve resources and
[6:12] ecological balance without depleting them for future
[6:15] generations. Example.
[6:18] Sustainability means using energy sources like wind and
[6:21] solar power instead of fossil fuels to protect our planet.
[6:26] Biodiversity Definition. The variety of plant and animal
[6:30] life in a particular habitat or in the world as a whole.
[6:34] Example The Amazon rainforest is home to incredible biodiversity,
[6:40] with thousands of species found nowhere else.
[6:44] Deforestation Definition The large scale removal of trees and
[6:50] forests, often to make way for agriculture or Urban
[6:53] Development. Example Deforestation in
[6:57] tropical areas is leading to loss of habitat for many
[7:01] endangered species. Carbon footprint Definition.
[7:06] The total amount of greenhouse gases, especially carbon
[7:10] dioxide, that are emitted by human activities, typically
[7:13] measured per individual or organization.
[7:17] Example. You can reduce your carbon
[7:19] footprint by using public transport and recycling.
[7:22] More Renewable energy definition.
[7:26] Energy that comes from natural sources that can be replenished
[7:30] like sunlight, wind, and water. Example, Countries are investing
[7:35] in renewable energy like solar and wind power to reduce
[7:39] dependence on fossil fuels. Ecosystem Definition.
[7:45] A community of living organisms and their physical environment
[7:48] interacting as a system. Example, Coral reefs are one of
[7:53] the most diverse ecosystems in the world, supporting a wide
[7:56] range of marine life. Pollution Definition The
[8:03] introduction of harmful substances or products into the
[8:06] environment causing damage to the natural world.
[8:10] Example Air pollution in major cities is a serious health risk
[8:14] due to high levels of smog and particulate matter.
[8:20] Greenhouse Effect Definition The warming of Earth's surface due
[8:26] to gases in the atmosphere that trap heat like carbon dioxide
[8:30] and methane. Example The greenhouse effect is
[8:33] essential for life on Earth, but too much can lead to global
[8:37] warming. I hope you learned something new
[8:45] and helpful today. Don't forget to leave a comment
[8:47] what you think about. Thanks for tuning into this
