[0:04] Hi everyone, and welcome back to another episode of our podcast.
[0:08] I'm Lisa, your host, and today we're going to talk about
[0:11] something that can truly change your life, the power of mindset.
[0:16] Staying positive and motivated every day can be a challenge,
[0:20] especially when things get tough.
[0:22] But the way we think can have a huge impact on how we feel and
[0:26] what we achieve. To help us understand more about
[0:29] the topic, I've invited James, our mindset expert.
[0:33] Don't forget to check out the free PDF file in the comments
[0:36] section below to get the full transcript and new vocabulary
[0:39] for this episode. Welcome, James.
[0:43] Thanks Lisa. I'm excited to talk about this.
[0:46] Mindset is such a powerful tool that anyone can use to live a
[0:50] better, happier life. So James, let's start with the
[0:53] basics. What is mindset and why is it so
[0:56] important? Mindset is basically the way you
[0:59] think. It's how you view challenges,
[1:01] failures, and successes in your life.
[1:04] There are two main types of mindset, a fixed mindset and a
[1:08] growth mindset. A fixed mindset means you
[1:11] believe your abilities are set and can't change.
[1:14] On the other hand, a growth mindset is when you believe you
[1:17] can improve and grow through effort and learning.
[1:20] Ah. I see.
[1:22] So how does having a growth mindset help us stay positive
[1:26] and motivated? A growth mindset helps you see
[1:30] challenges as opportunities to learn rather than as obstacles.
[1:34] When you believe that you can improve even through failure,
[1:37] you stay motivated to keep going.
[1:40] Instead of getting discouraged, you see every set back as a
[1:43] chance to grow. This keeps your attitude
[1:45] positive even when things don't go as planned.
[1:48] That sounds really empowering, but how do we develop a growth
[1:51] mindset if we don't already have one?
[1:55] Good question. First it's about being aware of
[1:58] your thoughts. If you catch yourself thinking I
[2:01] can't do this or I'm not good enough, try to reframe those
[2:05] thoughts instead. Say I can learn this or I'll get
[2:10] better with practice. It's also important to focus on
[2:13] the process rather than the result.
[2:16] Celebrate the effort you're putting in, not just the final
[2:18] outcome. And remember, growth takes time.
[2:23] That's great advice. So for people who struggle with
[2:26] staying motivated, what tips can you give?
[2:30] One of the best ways to stay motivated is to set small,
[2:33] achievable goals. Break big tasks into smaller
[2:37] steps. Each time you complete a step,
[2:40] you'll feel a sense of accomplishment, which motivates
[2:42] you to keep going. Also, surround yourself with
[2:45] positive influences, people who lift you up and inspire you.
[2:49] And don't forget to take care of yourself.
[2:51] Get enough sleep, eat well, and take breaks when you need them.
[2:54] James What role does self talk play in maintaining a positive
[2:58] mindset? Self talk is incredibly
[3:00] important. It's basically the internal
[3:02] dialogue we have with ourselves throughout the day.
[3:05] Positive self talk can help us stay motivated, while negative
[3:08] self talk can bring us down. For example, when you face a
[3:12] challenge, if yourself talk is negative, like I'll never get
[3:15] this right, you're more likely to give up.
[3:18] But if you change that to something like this is tough but
[3:21] I can figure it out, you're more likely to keep going.
[3:25] It's all about shifting your perspective.
[3:27] That makes sense. So how can we start practicing
[3:30] positive self talk if it doesn't come naturally to US?
[3:33] One simple way is to be mindful of your thoughts.
[3:37] When you catch yourself thinking something negative, stop and ask
[3:41] yourself, is this thought really helping me?
[3:44] If not, reframe it. For example, instead of saying I
[3:49] failed, say I didn't succeed this time, but I learned
[3:53] something valuable. Another tip is to practice
[3:57] gratitude. Focusing on what's going right
[3:59] in your life, even small things, can shift your mindset to a more
[4:03] positive place. Gratitude really is powerful,
[4:07] and I've heard people talk about visualization as a tool to stay
[4:10] motivated. Can you explain how that works?
[4:14] Absolutely. Visualization is a technique
[4:17] where you picture yourself achieving your goals.
[4:19] It's a mental practice that can boost motivation and confidence.
[4:23] For example, athletes often visualize themselves winning a
[4:26] race or performing at their best before a competition.
[4:30] You can use the same idea in daily life.
[4:33] Imagine yourself succeeding in a project or handling a difficult
[4:36] situation with confidence. It primes your brain to believe
[4:40] it's possible, making you more likely to take positive action.
[4:44] I love that. It's like you're training your
[4:46] brain for success. Exactly.
[4:49] Your brain can't always tell the difference between something
[4:52] vividly imagined and reality, so visualization can be a powerful
[4:56] tool. It also helps you stay focused
[4:58] on your goals because you're constantly reminding yourself of
[5:02] what you're working toward. Here's a fun fact.
[5:05] Did you know that studies have shown that just smiling can
[5:09] boost your mood, even if you don't feel happy?
[5:12] Yes, it's true. Smiling sends signals to your
[5:15] brain that release chemicals like dopamine and serotonin,
[5:18] which are linked to happiness and relaxation.
[5:20] So something as simple as smiling can actually help shift
[5:24] your mindset and make you feel more positive.
[5:27] That's amazing. So next time I'm feeling down,
[5:30] I'll try smiling even if I don't feel like it.
[5:34] Thanks so much James for sharing all this helpful information.
[5:38] It's clear that the power of mindset can really shape how we
[5:41] experience life, and staying positive and motivated starts
[5:45] with how we think. Absolutely.
[5:48] Remember, mindset is something you can work on every day.
[5:51] It's all about being kind to yourself, believing in your
[5:54] ability to grow, and focusing on the journey, not just the
[5:57] destination. Now it's time to learn some
[6:05] important vocabulary related to the topic.
[6:08] The first word for today is mindset.
[6:11] It means the way a person thinks and views challenges, successes,
[6:14] and failures. Example, having a positive
[6:18] mindset helps you stay motivated even during tough times.
[6:22] Next word is motivation. It means the desire or
[6:25] willingness to do something, especially toward a goal.
[6:30] Example, setting small goals can help boost your motivation to
[6:33] keep going. Next word is challenge.
[6:36] It means a task or situation that tests someone's abilities.
[6:41] Example Challenges can help you grow if you approach them with a
[6:45] positive mindset. Next word is reframe.
[6:50] It means to change the way you look at a situation to see it
[6:52] more positively. Example instead of seeing a
[6:56] mistake as failure, you can reframe it as a learning
[7:00] experience. Next word is positive influence.
[7:05] It means people or things that have a beneficial effect on your
[7:08] mood or mindset. Example, surrounding yourself
[7:12] with positive influences can help you stay motivated.
[7:17] Next word is goal, It means an aim or desired result that
[7:21] someone works toward. Example breaking down your big
[7:26] goal into smaller steps can make it more achievable.
[7:30] Next word is self-care. It means the practice of taking
[7:34] action to improve or maintain one's mental and physical
[7:37] health. Example, self-care, like getting
[7:41] enough sleep and eating well, can improve your mindset.
[7:45] Next word is resilience. It means the ability to recover
[7:49] quickly from difficulties or setbacks.
[7:52] Example building resilience helps you bounce back from
[7:55] challenges with a positive attitude.
