[0:04] Hi everyone, welcome back to Simple English Podcast, the show
[0:07] where we learn and grow together.
[0:10] I'm your host and today we're talking about something that
[0:12] affects every single one of us, confidence and self esteem.
[0:17] Let me ask you, have you ever felt unsure of yourself?
[0:21] Maybe you're afraid to speak up or you think you're not good
[0:23] enough? Well, you're not alone.
[0:26] But here's the good news, Confidence isn't something
[0:29] you're born with. It's something you can build.
[0:32] And to help us figure out how to do just that, we have William
[0:35] with us today. Don't forget to check out the
[0:38] free PDF file in the comments section below to get the full
[0:41] transcript and new vocabulary for this episode.
[0:49] William, thanks for joining us. Thanks for having me Lisa.
[0:52] I'm really excited to talk about this topic because confidence
[0:56] and self esteem can truly transform someone's life.
[1:00] Absolutely, and if you're listening right now and
[1:03] wondering how to become more confident, stay with us because
[1:06] we'll be giving you practical tips you can use today.
[1:09] Let's dive right in. So William, let's start with the
[1:13] basics. What's the difference between
[1:15] confidence and self esteem? People sometimes mix them up.
[1:20] Great question Lisa. Confidence is more about
[1:23] believing in your abilities, like feeling sure you can
[1:26] complete a task, whether it's public speaking, playing a
[1:30] sport, or even talking to new people.
[1:33] Self esteem on the other hand is deeper.
[1:36] It's about how you see yourself as a person, your worth.
[1:40] You can have confidence in certain skills but still
[1:43] struggle with self esteem if you don't truly value yourself.
[1:47] That's so true, I've seen people who are excellent at their job
[1:51] but still feel unsure about themselves.
[1:54] So how can someone start improving both their confidence
[1:57] and self esteem? It starts with small actions.
[2:01] Confidence builds with experience.
[2:03] Let's say you're nervous about public speaking.
[2:05] If you avoid it, your fear grows.
[2:07] But if you start speaking in front of small groups, your
[2:10] confidence slowly increases. It's like building a muscle.
[2:14] The more you do something, the stronger your confidence gets.
[2:18] That reminds me of a friend who was terrified of speaking in
[2:20] meetings. She started practicing by giving
[2:23] short updates in small group meetings, and now she even leads
[2:27] presentations. It didn't happen overnight, but
[2:30] each small step helped her gain confidence.
[2:33] Exactly, Lisa. Another key is setting realistic
[2:36] goals. If your goals are too big, you
[2:39] might get discouraged, but if you break them into smaller
[2:42] achievable steps, you'll build confidence along the way.
[2:46] And when it comes to self esteem, it's about self
[2:48] compassion. Stop being so hard on yourself.
[2:51] We all make mistakes and that's OK.
[2:54] How you talk to yourself matters.
[2:56] That's such an important point. We're off in our own worst
[2:59] critics, but self compassion is about treating ourselves like we
[3:03] would treat a friend. You wouldn't tear down a friend
[3:06] if they made a mistake, right? Exactly.
[3:08] Instead of saying I'm terrible at this, try saying I'm still
[3:12] learning and that's OK. Shifting your mindset can make a
[3:16] huge difference in how you feel about yourself.
[3:19] I love that. And you know, I've heard people
[3:22] say that confidence comes from keeping promises to yourself.
[3:25] Is that true? Yes, 100%.
[3:29] When you set a goal and follow through, even on small things
[3:33] like waking up early or exercising, you prove to
[3:36] yourself that you can do it. That consistency helps build
[3:40] trust in yourself, and that's where confidence grows.
[3:45] Think about it like this. If you keep breaking promises to
[3:48] yourself, it's hard to believe you'll succeed at bigger things.
[3:52] That's a powerful thought. Keeping promises to yourself is
[3:56] like keeping promises to a friend.
[3:58] If you constantly let your friend down, they won't trust
[4:01] you. It's the same with yourself.
[4:03] Exactly, Lisa. Another helpful tip is to
[4:06] surround yourself with people who uplift you.
[4:09] It's hard to feel confident if you're constantly around people
[4:12] who make you feel bad about yourself.
[4:15] Positive support goes a long way.
[4:18] So true, who we spend time with can really influence how we see
[4:22] ourselves. What about body language?
[4:25] Does it play a role in confidence?
[4:27] Oh definitely. The way you carry yourself can
[4:30] actually trick your brain into feeling more confident.
[4:33] Standing tall, making eye contact, and smiling.
[4:37] These small changes can make you feel more powerful and in
[4:40] control, even if you're nervous inside.
[4:44] That's fascinating. Sometimes just changing your
[4:46] posture can change how you feel. Exactly.
[4:50] It sends a signal to your brain that says I've got this.
[4:53] So even if you're nervous, stand tall and project confidence.
[4:56] Your mind will catch up with your body.
[5:03] Let's take a quick break for a fun fact.
[5:06] Did you know that even the most confident people have moments of
[5:08] self doubt? It's true.
[5:11] Research shows that even successful people like athletes
[5:14] or CE OS sometimes feel nervous or question their abilities.
[5:18] But the difference is they don't let it stop them.
[5:21] They push through the doubt and take action anyway.
[5:24] That's a great point, Lisa. Confidence doesn't mean never
[5:26] being scared or unsure. It's about feeling the fear, but
[5:30] doing it anyway. The more you push through, the
[5:32] easier it becomes over time. So if you're listening and
[5:36] thinking I could never be confident, just know that
[5:39] everyone feels unsure sometimes. The key is to keep moving
[5:43] forward. William, thank you so much for
[5:50] all of these amazing insights. I feel like we've covered so
[5:53] many helpful tips today. Building confidence through
[5:56] small actions, setting realistic goals, practicing self
[6:00] compassion, and even using body language to boost how we feel.
[6:05] It was a pleasure, Lisa. And remember, confidence is
[6:08] something you build over time. It's OK to start small, be kind
[6:13] to yourself, and take it one step at a time.
[6:15] Absolutely. So if you're listening, remember
[6:19] that confidence and self esteem are like muscles.
[6:22] You can grow them with practice and patience.
[6:25] Start with one small thing today and see where it takes you.
[6:29] Don't forget to subscribe to our podcast, share this episode with
[6:33] a friend who might need a confidence boost, and leave us a
[6:36] comment with your thoughts or questions.
[6:39] Thanks for tuning in everyone. Keep building that confidence
[6:42] and we'll see you next time. Now it's time to learn some
[6:49] important vocabulary related to the topic.
[6:52] The first word of today is confidence.
[6:54] It means a belief in one's abilities or qualities.
[6:58] Example, after practicing her speech several times, her
[7:02] confidence grew and she was able to present without fear.
[7:06] Next word is self esteem. It means the overall sense of
[7:10] 1's personal value or worth. Example, even though he was good
[7:14] at his job, he struggled with low self esteem and often
[7:17] doubted his worth. Next word is compassion.
[7:21] It means the ability to show kindness and understanding to
[7:24] oneself or others. Example, self compassion is
[7:28] important when we make mistakes, instead of being harsh, we
[7:31] should forgive ourselves. Next word is posture.
[7:36] It means the way in which someone holds their body,
[7:39] especially while standing or sitting.
[7:42] Example, improving your posture by standing tall can instantly
[7:46] make you feel more confident. Next word is self doubt.
[7:51] It means the feeling of uncertainty about one's
[7:53] abilities or actions. Example even after years of
[7:56] success she still experienced moments of self doubt but she
[7:59] pushed through. The last word is body language.
[8:03] It means the non verbal signals such as posture or gestures that
[8:07] communicate feelings or attitudes.
[8:10] Example using confident body language like making eye contact
[8:14] can help improve how others perceive you.
