[0:03] Hello everyone and welcome back to the Simple English Podcast.
[0:07] I'm your host Lisa, and today I want to share something very
[0:11] personal with you, my journey of learning English at home.
[0:15] Yes, I didn't go to an English speaking country, I didn't have
[0:18] expensive classes, I didn't even have a native teacher, but I
[0:21] still learned English. And today I'll tell you how I
[0:24] did it, step by step. Now if you're someone who feels
[0:28] stuck or maybe you think I can never speak English fluently
[0:32] because I live in a non-english country, please stay with me
[0:37] because I used to think the same thing.
[0:40] I know how hard it is when people around you don't speak
[0:42] English, when you don't have confidence or when you're afraid
[0:45] of making mistakes. But trust me, you can learn
[0:49] English right where you are at home.
[0:52] In this episode, I'll talk about the tools I used, the habits I
[0:55] built, the mistakes I made, and the simple things that worked
[0:59] for me. I'll also share a fun fact at
[1:01] the end, so don't miss that. And remember, this podcast is
[1:05] not just about English. It's about believing in yourself
[1:08] and never giving up. So grab your notebook or your
[1:11] favorite drink, and let's get started with today's episode,
[1:15] How I Learned English at Home. As always, don't forget to check
[1:19] out the free PDF file in the comments section below to get
[1:22] the full transcript and vocabulary for this episode.
[1:31] Let's go back a few years. I was just a normal girl living
[1:34] in a small town. I wanted to learn English, but I
[1:37] didn't have the chance to travel abroad.
[1:39] I couldn't afford private classes either.
[1:42] But one day I decided to make a change.
[1:44] I said to myself, if I can learn to cook or ride a bike at home,
[1:48] maybe I can learn English too. So I started from there.
[1:53] The first way to improve my English is that I turned my home
[1:57] into an English environment. One of the first things I did
[2:01] was surround myself with English.
[2:03] I changed the language on my phone, computer and TV to
[2:06] English. It felt strange at first, I
[2:09] didn't understand everything, but slowly I started learning
[2:12] new words just by seeing them every day.
[2:14] For example, every time I opened my phone and saw the word
[2:17] settings instead of my language, I got curious.
[2:20] I looked it up, then I remembered it.
[2:23] It's like having a little English teacher living inside
[2:26] your phone. The second way to improve my
[2:29] English is that I watched shows with subtitles.
[2:32] I started watching English shows on Netflix and YouTube with
[2:35] English subtitles, not subtitles in my language.
[2:39] This helped me a lot. I listened to how people really
[2:43] talk, how they use everyday phrases like what's up, No way
[2:48] or I'm in. These are the things textbooks
[2:50] don't always teach. One of my favorite shows was
[2:54] Friends. It's funny, easy to understand,
[2:57] and full of daily English. I used to repeat what they said
[3:00] out loud, like how you doing Like Joey.
[3:04] It was fun and it didn't feel like studying.
[3:07] The third way to improve my English is that spoke to myself.
[3:12] Yes, it sounds a little crazy, but talking to myself in English
[3:15] was a game changer. I would describe what I was
[3:18] doing. I'm brushing my teeth now or I'm
[3:21] cooking rice for dinner. This helped me to think in
[3:25] English, not just translate from my native language.
[3:28] When I was alone, I would even pretend I was doing an English
[3:31] interview. Hi Lisa, tell us about your
[3:34] hobbies. Sure, I love drawing, cooking,
[3:37] and learning new languages. It felt silly sometimes, but it
[3:41] worked. I became more confident and
[3:43] fluent because I practiced speaking even without a partner.
[3:48] The fourth way to improve my English is that I used English
[3:51] apps every day. I downloaded a few English
[3:54] learning apps like Duolingo, Hello Talk, and Quizlet.
[3:58] I used them for just 10 to 15 minutes each day.
[4:01] It became part of my daily routine, like brushing my teeth.
[4:05] Hello talk was especially useful.
[4:08] I could chat with real English learners and native speakers.
[4:11] Sometimes we sent voice messages that helped me improve both my
[4:14] writing and speaking. The fifth way to improve my
[4:17] English is that I wrote a journal in English.
[4:21] Another thing that helped was writing a daily journal in
[4:23] English. It didn't need to be long, so
[4:26] just a few lines. Today was a good day.
[4:29] I had pasta for lunch. I watched a movie called
[4:32] Inception. It was amazing.
[4:35] This helped me practice new vocabulary and learn how to
[4:38] express my feelings in English. Finally, I made a simple plan
[4:42] and stayed consistent. I didn't study 8 hours a day.
[4:45] I just made a simple plan. Watch something in English for
[4:49] 20 minutes, or speak to myself for 5 minutes, or use an app for
[4:54] 10 minutes, or write a short journal.
[4:57] That's it. Consistency was the key.
[4:59] I didn't give up after one week. I did it again and again.
[5:02] Slowly my English started to improve.
[5:05] And the best part? I actually enjoyed it.
[5:12] Here's a fun fact. I once learned 30 new English
[5:15] words in one day just by reading food labels in the kitchen.
[5:19] Yes, really. One day I opened my fridge and
[5:22] looked at every item. Ketchup, yogurt, milk, peanut
[5:26] butter. I wrote down all the English
[5:28] words I could find. Then I searched their meanings
[5:31] and used them in short sentences.
[5:33] Example, ketchup. I like ketchup on my fries.
[5:39] Yogurt. I eat yogurt in the morning.
[5:42] It was a small activity, but it helped me remember those words
[5:45] easily. Learning English doesn't always
[5:48] need to be difficult. Sometimes the best classroom is
[5:50] your kitchen. So my dear listeners, if you
[5:58] want to learn English, remember this.
[6:00] You don't need to go abroad, you don't need expensive classes.
[6:04] You just need motivation, simple tools and a little creativity.
[6:08] I learned English at home and so can you.
[6:12] Start small, make English a part of your daily life.
[6:15] Watch, listen, speak, read and write a little everyday.
[6:20] Don't worry about mistakes, don't wait for the perfect
[6:22] moment, The perfect moment is now.
[6:25] And most importantly, believe in yourself.
[6:28] If I could do it sitting in my bedroom with a notebook and a
[6:31] dream, you can do it too. If you found this episode
[6:34] helpful, please like, share, and leave a comment.
[6:37] I'd love to hear about your English journey.

[6:43] more episodes like this one. Thanks for listening and I'll
[6:47] see you next time. OK everyone, it's time to learn
[6:59] some important vocabulary related to the topic.
[7:03] The first word is immersion. It means being deeply surrounded
[7:06] by something, like a language example.
[7:10] By changing the settings on all my devices to English, I created
[7:14] an immersion environment that boosted my learning.
[7:17] Next word is exposure. It means regular contact with
[7:21] something new or unfamiliar. Example Watching English shows
[7:26] with subtitles gave me continuous exposure to native
[7:29] pronunciation and everyday vocabulary.
[7:32] Next word is adaptation. It means changing your behavior
[7:37] to fit new situations or needs. Example Through adaptation, I
[7:42] learned to adjust my daily routines to include reading,
[7:45] speaking, and listening in English.
[7:48] Next word is resilience. It means the ability to keep
[7:51] going even when things are difficult.
[7:54] Example facing initial difficulties in understanding
[7:58] new words. My resilience helped me to
[8:01] practice every day without giving up.
[8:04] The last word is resourcefulness.
[8:06] It means being creative and smart in finding ways to solve
[8:10] problems. Example, my resourcefulness led
[8:13] me to use free online apps and real life situations to practice
[8:17] English effectively.
