[0:20] overwhelming, right? You might wonder, where do I

[0:26] Don't worry, we've got you covered.
[0:28] To help us today, we have Andrew, an experienced English
[0:32] teacher who has worked with beginners from all over the
[0:34] world. Andrew, welcome to the podcast.
[0:39] Thank you, Lisa, I'm excited to be here and share some tips with
[0:42] our listeners. Starting to learn English can
[0:45] seem challenging, but it's also a rewarding journey.
[0:49] Absolutely. And for all of you listening,
[0:52] whether you're just starting or want to refresh the basics, stay
[0:55] tuned. By the end of this episode,
[0:58] you'll know exactly how to take your first steps in learning
[1:01] English. As always, don't forget to check
[1:04] out the free PDF file in the comments section below to get
[1:07] the full transcript and vocabulary for this episode.
[1:15] So, Andrew, let's get straight to it.
[1:18] What's the first thing someone should do when they decide to
[1:20] learn English? The first step is setting a
[1:23] clear goal. Ask yourself, why do I want to
[1:27] learn English? Is it for work, travel, studies
[1:30] or to talk to friends? Knowing your reason will keep
[1:33] you motivated. That makes sense.
[1:35] If your goal is to travel, you might focus more on
[1:37] conversational phrases, right? Exactly.
[1:41] And if it's for work, you'd want to learn professional
[1:44] vocabulary. Setting a goal helps you create
[1:47] a personalized plan. Great tip.
[1:50] What about resources? There are so many out there,
[1:53] apps, books, videos, it can be confusing.
[1:57] You're right, Lisa, beginners should start with simple tools.
[2:01] Apps like Duolingo or Babble are great for building vocabulary.
[2:05] Watching children's shows or movies with subtitles is another
[2:08] fun way to learn. Oh I love that idea.
[2:12] When I was learning Spanish I watched cartoons and it really
[2:15] helped. The language is simpler and the
[2:17] visuals make it easier to understand.
[2:20] Exactly, and for practice you can use flash cards for
[2:24] vocabulary or join beginner friendly language groups online.
[2:28] Andrew, many people worry about making mistakes.
[2:32] How do you encourage your students to overcome that fear?
[2:36] That's a big one. I always tell my students
[2:39] mistakes are part of learning. Think about kids.
[2:42] They don't worry about grammar when they start talking, they
[2:45] just try, and that's how they learn.
[2:48] True, my niece started learning English and she once said I go
[2:51] to the park. It was adorable and we corrected
[2:55] her gently. Exactly.
[2:58] The key is to try and not be afraid.
[3:01] Use what you know, even if it's just a few words.
[3:04] Over time, you'll improve. What about speaking practice?
[3:09] Many beginners don't have anyone to talk to in English.
[3:12] Great question. If you don't have a partner,
[3:15] talk to yourself. Describe what you're doing like
[3:17] I'm making coffee or I'm going to the store.
[3:21] You can also use apps like Hello Talk to connect with native
[3:23] speakers. I love that idea.
[3:26] It's like creating your own mini English world.
[3:30] Exactly. And remember, consistency is
[3:33] key. Even 10 to 15 minutes a day can
[3:36] make a big difference. Andrew, let's talk about
[3:39] listening skills. For beginners, it can be hard to
[3:42] understand native speakers. What do you recommend?
[3:46] Start small. Instead of listening to a full
[3:48] movie, pick short, simple clips or podcasts for beginners.
[3:52] Repeat them until you understand.
[3:54] You can also slow down the audio using apps or YouTube settings.
[3:58] I've done that. Slowing down the audio really
[4:01] helps, especially when the speaker talks fast.
[4:05] Exactly, and don't worry about understanding every word.
[4:08] Focus on the main idea 1st and as your vocabulary grows,
[4:12] details will become clearer. That's so encouraging.
[4:17] Now, Andrew Grammar is another tricky part for beginners.
[4:21] How can they learn it without feeling overwhelmed?
[4:24] Start with the basics. Learn simple sentence structures
[4:27] like I am, you are or he she is. Use them in daily conversations.
[4:34] Once you're comfortable, move on to more complex tenses like past
[4:37] and future. That's practical advice.
[4:40] And what about reading and writing?
[4:43] For reading, start with children's books or simple
[4:45] articles online. They use basic vocabulary and
[4:48] short sentences. For writing, keep a daily
[4:51] journal. Write about your day in simple
[4:53] English. For example, today I went to the
[4:56] market. I bought apples.
[4:58] That's a great habit. Writing daily not only improves
[5:02] grammar but also helps with thinking in English.
[5:05] Absolutely. And here's a tip, if you're
[5:08] stuck on a word, don't panic. Use what you know.
[5:12] Instead of saying delicious, say good.
[5:15] Over time, you'll learn more specific words.
[5:18] Speaking of vocabulary, what's the best way to learn and
[5:21] remember new words? Use them.
[5:24] Let's say you learn the word beautiful.
[5:26] Try using it in different sentences throughout the day
[5:28] like this flower is beautiful or the weather is beautiful.
[5:32] I love that. It's like making the word part
[5:35] of your life. Exactly, and review regularly.
[5:38] A good method is the spaced repetition technique.
[5:41] Apps like Anki can help with this.
[5:44] Andrew, you've given us so much valuable advice.
[5:47] Before we move on, any last tips for beginners?
[5:51] Yes, Lisa, Don't compare yourself to others.
[5:53] Everyone learns at their own pace.
[5:56] Celebrate small wins, whether it's learning 10 new words or
[5:58] understanding a short conversation.
[6:01] That's so motivating, thank you, Andrew.
[6:04] Let's keep going and explore more ways to make learning
[6:07] English fun and effective. Andrew, it's time for our fun
[6:16] fact of the day. Did you know that English has
[6:19] more than 170,000 words in use today?
[6:24] Wow, that's incredible. But here's something even
[6:27] better. You only need about 1000 to 2000
[6:30] words to have basic conversations.
[6:32] That's such a relief. Beginners often think they need
[6:36] to know every word, but even learning a small number of words
[6:39] can take you a long way. Absolutely focus on common words
[6:44] and phrases first. For example, words like eat, go,
[6:48] want and help are super useful in everyday life.
[6:55] Andrew, thank you so much for sharing these amazing tips to
[6:59] all our listeners. Remember, learning English
[7:01] doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to be consistent.
[7:05] Exactly. Set your goal, use simple tools,
[7:08] practice daily and don't be afraid to make mistakes.
[7:12] Enjoy the process. And for everyone listening, we'd
[7:15] love to hear from you. What's your reason for learning
[7:19] English? Share your goals and challenges
[7:21] in the comments below. Thank you for joining us today.
[7:24] Don't forget to like, subscribe, and share this podcast with
[7:27] friends who are also learning English.
[7:30] Until next time, keep practicing and have fun.
[7:34] Bye everyone, good luck with your English journey.
[7:41] All right everyone, it's time to learn some important vocabulary
[7:44] related to the topic. The first word of today is
[7:48] conversation. It means a spoken exchange of
[7:51] thoughts, ideas, or information between two or more people.
[7:55] Example She started a conversation with her new
[7:58] English teacher to practice speaking.
[8:01] Next word is fluency. It means the ability to speak or
[8:05] write a language smoothly and easily without hesitation.
[8:09] Example Fluency in English takes practice and time, but it's
[8:13] achievable with daily effort. Next word is pronunciation.
[8:18] It means the way in which a word or language is spoken.
[8:22] Example Improving your pronunciation can make your
[8:25] English more understandable to others.
[8:28] Next word is vocabulary. It means the set of words known
[8:31] and used by a person in a particular language.
[8:35] Example Expanding your vocabulary helps you express
[8:38] your thoughts more clearly. The last word is motivation.
[8:43] It means the reason or enthusiasm to act or achieve
[8:46] something. Example, setting clear goals can
[8:50] give you the motivation to keep learning English.
