[0:04] Hi everyone, welcome back to the Simple English Podcast, where we
[0:08] learn and grow together. I'm Lisa, your host, and today
[0:12] we're tackling a topic that so many people struggle with the
[0:15] fear of speaking English in public.
[0:18] Hi Lisa, this is such an important topic.
[0:21] I know so many people, including myself at one point who felt
[0:24] that fear. It's completely normal, but also
[0:27] something you can overcome with the right approach.
[0:30] That's true, Leo. Whether it's giving a
[0:32] presentation, ordering food in a restaurant, or even talking to a
[0:36] stranger, speaking English in public can feel intimidating.
[0:40] But guess what? It doesn't have to stay that
[0:43] way. Absolutely.
[0:46] And today, we'll share practical tips, relatable examples, and
[0:49] even a fun fact to help you feel more confident speaking English
[0:52] in public. So if you've ever felt nervous
[0:56] or worried about making mistakes, stick around.
[1:00] By the end of this episode, you'll have the tools to face
[1:02] those fears head on. As always, don't forget to check
[1:06] out the free PDF file in the comments section below to get
[1:09] the full transcript and vocabulary for this episode.
[1:18] All right, Leo, let's start with the big question.
[1:20] Why do people feel so scared to speak English in public?
[1:25] Great question, Lisa. The biggest reason is usually
[1:28] fear of making mistakes. People worry they'll say the
[1:31] wrong word or use the wrong grammar, and others will judge
[1:35] them. That's so true.
[1:37] I remember when I first started learning a new language I'd get
[1:41] so nervous about saying something wrong.
[1:43] It felt like everyone was watching me.
[1:45] Exactly. But here's the thing.
[1:48] Most people are not judging you. In fact, they're often impressed
[1:52] that you're speaking a second language.
[1:55] That's a great point. So what's the first step to
[1:58] overcoming this fear? The first step is to change your
[2:01] mindset. Instead of focusing on being
[2:04] perfect, focus on being understood.
[2:07] It's OK to make mistakes, they're part of learning.
[2:10] I love that. So instead of worrying about
[2:13] grammar, just try to communicate your idea.
[2:16] For example, if you're at a cafe and want a coffee, you can
[2:19] simply say I want coffee. It's short and clear and people
[2:23] will understand. Exactly.
[2:27] And over time, as you practice, your sentences will naturally
[2:30] improve. What about people who feel
[2:33] nervous speaking in front of a group?
[2:36] That's a big one. For public speaking, practice is
[2:38] key. Start small.
[2:41] Practice in front of a mirror, record yourself speaking, or
[2:44] even talk to a pet or a plant. Oh I love that idea.
[2:48] Talking to a pet is great because they won't judge you,
[2:51] but you still get to practice. And once you feel a bit more
[2:54] confident, try speaking in front of a close friend or family
[2:57] member. They can give you feedback in a
[2:59] supportive way. What about when someone has to
[3:02] speak in a formal setting like a presentation?
[3:05] For formal situations, prepare and rehearse.
[3:08] Write down what you want to say, break it into small parts, and
[3:12] practice those parts until they feel natural.
[3:15] That's so helpful. I found that practicing out loud
[3:19] helps me remember things better and feel less nervous.
[3:22] Absolutely. And don't forget to use tools
[3:25] like notes or slides to guide you.
[3:28] It's perfectly OK to have a little help.
[3:30] Let's talk about confidence. How can people build confidence
[3:34] when speaking English in public? One great way is to start with
[3:38] simple conversations. For example, say hello to a
[3:41] cashier, ask a stranger for directions, or join a language
[3:46] exchange group. That's so practical.
[3:49] Small conversations are less intimidating, but they help you
[3:52] build confidence step by. Step exactly.
[3:57] And here's another tip. Celebrate your progress every
[4:00] time you speak English in public.
[4:02] Even if it's just one sentence, that's a win.
[4:06] I agree, progress, not perfection, is what matters.
[4:11] Another helpful technique is to focus on your breathing.
[4:14] When you feel nervous, take a deep breath before speaking.
[4:17] It helps calm your nerves and gives you a moment to think
[4:21] That's. Such a simple yet effective tip.
[4:25] I've noticed that when I'm nervous, I tend to rush my
[4:28] words. Taking a deep breath helps me
[4:31] slow down. Exactly and.
[4:34] Speaking of slowing down, it's also OK to pause while you're
[4:38] talking. If you need a moment to think of
[4:40] the right word, just pause. It's natural and no one will
[4:44] think less of you. That's so true.
[4:47] I think we often feel like we need to fill every second with
[4:50] words, but pauses can actually make your speech more impactful.
[4:54] Absolutely. Another great way to overcome
[4:57] fear is to immerse yourself in English.
[5:00] Watch movies, listen to podcasts, or join online
[5:04] communities where you can practice.
[5:06] I found that listening to English podcasts really helps
[5:09] with understanding different accents and learning natural
[5:12] phrases. That's a great example, Lisa.
[5:16] Immersion helps you get comfortable with the language,
[5:19] and the more familiar it feels, the less intimidating it becomes
[5:22] to speak. Let's talk about how to handle
[5:25] mistakes. What should someone do if they
[5:28] make a mistake while speaking? The best thing to do is to laugh
[5:32] it off or correct yourself and move on.
[5:34] Mistakes are a natural part of learning and most people won't
[5:37] even notice them. That's so important.
[5:41] I've made plenty of mistakes while speaking and I've realized
[5:44] that most people don't mind. They're usually encouraging and
[5:47] supportive. Exactly.
[5:50] And remember, your goal is communication, not perfection.
[5:54] As long as your message is clear, you're succeeding.
[5:57] These tips are so practical, Leo, I'm sure our listeners are
[6:01] already feeling more confident. Before we move on to the
[6:09] conclusion, let's share a fun fact about language learning.
[6:13] Did you know that speaking a second language actually boosts
[6:16] your brain power? That's right, studies show that
[6:19] bilingual people have better memory, problem solving skills,
[6:23] and even multitasking abilities. So not only are you improving
[6:27] your English, but you're also training your brain.
[6:30] It's like a workout for your mind.
[6:33] And the more you practice, the stronger your brain gets.
[6:36] It's a win, win. All right, let's recap what
[6:43] we've learned today. First, the fear of speaking
[6:46] English in public is normal, but you can overcome it by focusing
[6:50] on communication, not perfection.
[6:53] Yes, start small, practice regularly and don't be afraid to
[6:57] make mistakes. Remember, every conversation is
[7:01] progress. And if you're preparing for a
[7:03] formal setting, rehearse what you want to say and use tools to
[7:07] guide you. And don't forget to celebrate
[7:10] your progress. Each step forward builds your
[7:13] confidence. Thank you so much for sharing
[7:16] these tips, Leo. My pleasure Lisa, I hope these
[7:19] ideas help our listeners feel more confident and ready to
[7:22] speak English in public. And thank you, listeners, for
