[0:04] Hello everyone, welcome back to the Simple English Podcast,
[0:07] where we learned something new while improving our English.
[0:11] I'm Lisa, your host, and today we're talking about a topic that
[0:14] impacts everyone, exercise. But don't worry, this isn't
[0:19] about running marathons or lifting heavy weights.
[0:22] Instead, we're exploring how even simple movements can change
[0:25] your life. To help us, we have a very
[0:29] special guest, Hubert. He's a fitness enthusiast and a
[0:33] health coach who knows how to make exercise fun and easy for
[0:36] everyone. As always, don't forget to check
[0:39] out the free PDF file in the comments section below to get
[0:43] the full transcript and vocabulary for this episode.
[0:51] Welcome, Hubert. Hi Lisa, thanks for having me
[0:54] here. I'm excited to share some tips
[0:56] and stories about how exercise can transform not only your body
[1:00] but also your mind. That sounds amazing, so let's
[1:04] jump right in. Hubert, many people think
[1:07] exercise is only about losing weight.
[1:10] What's your take on that? That's a great question, Lisa.
[1:13] Exercise is about so much more than just weight loss.
[1:16] It helps you stay healthy, improves your mood, and even
[1:19] boosts your brain power. For example, regular exercise
[1:22] can reduce the risk of diseases like diabetes and heart
[1:25] problems. Wow, that's impressive.
[1:28] But what about mental health? How does exercise help with
[1:31] that? Exercise is amazing for mental
[1:34] health. When you move your body, your
[1:36] brain releases feel good chemicals called endorphins.
[1:40] These chemicals reduce stress and make you feel happier.
[1:44] For instance, I had a client who was always stressed from work.
[1:47] She started walking for 30 minutes every day and after a
[1:49] few weeks she felt calmer and slept better.
[1:53] That's such a simple but powerful example.
[1:56] So what about people who say they're too busy to exercise?
[2:00] The I'm too busy excuse. Here's my advice, start small.
[2:05] Even 10 minutes a day makes a difference.
[2:07] For example, you can stretch in the morning or take the stairs
[2:10] instead of the elevator. One of my friends is a busy mom,
[2:13] but she squeezes in a 10 minute yoga session while her baby
[2:15] naps. That's inspiring.
[2:18] What types of exercise are best for beginners?
[2:20] Hubert. Great question.
[2:22] It depends on what you enjoy. Walking is one of the easiest
[2:26] ways to start. If you like dancing, try a dance
[2:28] workout. If you're sitting a lot,
[2:30] stretches can help. The key is to find something you
[2:33] like so it feels less like a chore.
[2:36] So true Hubert, I love dancing and it never feels like exercise
[2:41] to me. But let's talk about motivation.
[2:45] How can people stay consistent? Motivation is tricky, but here's
[2:49] a tip. Set small goals.
[2:52] For example, instead of saying I'll work out for an hour every
[2:54] day, start with I'll move for 10 minutes today.
[2:58] Also, tracking your progress helps.
[3:01] I use a simple notebook to write down what I do each day and it
[3:05] feels great to see how far I've come.
[3:08] Hubert, earlier you mentioned walking and stretching is great
[3:11] starting points, but what about those who want to challenge
[3:14] themselves more? Great question, Lisa.
[3:18] For those ready to step it up, strength training and cardio are
[3:21] excellent options. Strength training doesn't mean
[3:24] lifting heavy weights. It can be simple, like using
[3:27] resistance bands or doing body weight exercises like pushups
[3:30] and squats. These activities build muscle,
[3:33] strengthen bones, and even boost metabolism.
[3:36] That's so helpful, but some people might feel intimidated by
[3:40] strength training. That's common, but strength
[3:43] training is for everyone. For example, one of my clients
[3:46] who's in her 60s started with light dumbbells.
[3:49] Now she feels stronger and has better posture.
[3:53] Strength training isn't about looking like a bodybuilder, it's
[3:55] about feeling strong in everyday life.
[3:58] That's inspiring. What about flexibility?
[4:02] It seems like it's often overlooked.
[4:04] You're right Lisa, flexibility is key to preventing injuries
[4:08] and improving mobility. Yoga or simple stretches like
[4:12] touching your toes or doing a cat cow stretch can make a big
[4:15] difference. Even 5 minutes a day helps you
[4:18] feel more relaxed and limber. I've tried yoga before and it's
[4:21] amazing how much lighter I feel afterward.
[4:24] Exactly. And for those who find it hard
[4:27] to stay consistent, technology can be a game changer.
[4:30] Oh, like fitness apps? Yes, apps can guide you through
[4:34] workouts, track your progress, and even remind you to stay
[4:38] active. Platforms like YouTube are also
[4:41] fantastic for free workout videos.
[4:44] And if you have a smartwatch, it's like having a personal
[4:46] trainer. It tracks your steps, heart
[4:49] rate, and even your sleep. That's so true.
[4:53] I've followed online dance workouts and there's so much
[4:56] fun. That's the key.
[4:58] Find something you enjoy and it won't feel like a chore.
[5:01] Whether it's dancing, yoga or jogging, there's an activity for
[5:05] everyone. Absolutely, Hubert.
[5:08] And the best part is, it's never too late to start.
[5:11] Exactly. Just start small, stay
[5:14] consistent, and watch the benefits grow.
[5:17] That's such practical advice. Now, Hubert, it's time for our
[5:25] fun fact of the day. Did you know that exercising
[5:29] outdoors can boost your happiness even more than
[5:32] exercising indoors? That's true at Lisa.
[5:35] Being in nature improves your mood and gives you more energy.
[5:39] Plus, the sunlight helps your body produce vitamin D, which is
[5:41] great for your bones and immune system.
[5:44] Exactly. So if you have a park nearby,
[5:47] why not take a walk or jog there?
[5:49] It's like a double win for your body and mind.
[5:52] Absolutely. I often recommend people start
[5:55] their day with a short outdoor walk.
[5:57] It's like hitting a reset button for your mind.
[6:04] This has been such a helpful conversation, Hubert.
[6:07] I love how exercise is not just about looking good, but also
[6:10] about feeling good inside and out.
[6:13] Thanks Lisa, it's been great sharing these tips.
[6:16] Remember, exercise doesn't have to be complicated.
[6:19] Just move your body in a way that makes you happy.
[6:22] So true to everyone listening, start small and make movement
[6:27] part of your life. Even tiny steps can lead to big
[6:30] changes. Don't forget to like, share, and

[6:38] And if you have your own tips or stories about exercise, let us
[6:41] know in the comments. Until next time, stay active and
