[0:04] Hi everyone, welcome back to the Simple English Podcast.
[0:07] I'm Lisa, and today we're going to talk about something that's a
[0:10] bit uncomfortable stepping out of your comfort zone.
[0:15] Now, I know that sounds a little scary, right?
[0:17] But stick with us because today we're going to dive into why
[0:21] this is so important and how it can really change your life.
[0:27] I'm joined today by Lewis, who's going to help us understand what
[0:30] it means to step out of our comfort zones, why it's so
[0:33] important, and how we can all take those first steps.
[0:37] As always, don't forget to check out the free PDF file in the
[0:40] comments section below to get the full transcript and
[0:43] vocabulary for this episode. So, Louis, have you ever had to
[0:51] step out of your comfort zone? Oh, definitely.
[0:54] I think stepping out of my comfort zone has been a big part
[0:56] of my life. A lot of people think that
[0:58] stepping out means doing something big and dramatic, like
[1:01] moving to a new country. But it can also be small,
[1:04] everyday things that push you to grow.
[1:06] Yeah, I completely agree. It doesn't always have to be
[1:09] some big life changing moment. In fact, sometimes those small
[1:12] steps can add up to a huge difference.
[1:15] But before we get into that, let's talk about why it's
[1:18] important to push ourselves beyond our comfort zones.
[1:21] So, Louis, why do you think it's so important to step out of our
[1:24] comfort zones? Well, Lisa, when we stay in our
[1:27] comfort zone, we're basically just doing the same things over
[1:30] and over. It's easy, it's familiar, and it
[1:32] feels safe. But The thing is, growth doesn't
[1:35] happen when we're comfortable. Growth happens when we challenge
[1:38] ourselves, try new things and take risks.
[1:42] Think about it, if you never try a new sport, or try to speak a
[1:45] new language or take on a new challenge at work, you'll never
[1:48] know what you're really capable of.
[1:50] I remember a time when I was terrified of public speaking,
[1:53] but once I started pushing myself to speak at small events,
[1:56] it slowly became easier. Ah, I totally get that public
[2:00] speaking is such a big fear for so many people, including
[2:03] myself. But I guess the more you
[2:05] practice, the more comfortable you become with it, right?
[2:09] Exactly. And it's not just about public
[2:11] speaking. For example, if you're a student
[2:13] and you're always sitting in the back of the class never
[2:16] answering questions, stepping out of your comfort zone could
[2:19] mean raising your hand to answer one question.
[2:21] It's a small action, but it's a step toward building confidence.
[2:25] And it's the same in everyday life.
[2:27] Maybe it's starting a conversation with someone new,
[2:30] or even trying a new hobby you've always been curious
[2:32] about, like painting or cooking a different type of cuisine.
[2:36] These small things add up and you start realizing you can do a
[2:39] lot more than you thought. Right, so stepping out of your
[2:43] comfort zone can actually help you build confidence.
[2:46] It's not about doing everything perfectly, it's about trying new
[2:49] things, even if they scare you at 1st.
[2:52] It's like when you first started learning English, right?
[2:55] Exactly. When I first started I was
[2:58] nervous about making mistakes, but I realized that if I didn't
[3:01] speak or try to practice, I'd never improve.
[3:04] So I had to push myself to make mistakes and now I'm a lot more
[3:07] confident when speaking. That's a great point, and it
[3:11] doesn't just apply to language learning.
[3:13] This idea of failing forward applies to so many aspects of
[3:17] life. You don't have to be perfect,
[3:20] but you do have to try. And every time you step out of
[3:22] your comfort zone, you grow a little bit more.
[3:25] So, Louis, you're saying that staying in our comfort zone
[3:28] might feel good, but it actually stops us from growing?
[3:33] I know a lot of people who stick to their usual routines, same
[3:36] job, same friends, same activities, and they never feel
[3:40] like they're moving forward. Exactly, Lisa.
[3:43] It's like when you're learning to ride a bike.
[3:45] At first you're scared because it's new and you might fall, but
[3:48] once you push past that fear and get used to balancing, you start
[3:51] to enjoy the ride. It's the same with life.
[3:54] If you never try something new, you never grow.
[3:57] It might be uncomfortable at first, but it's worth it in the
[4:00] end. I totally get that.
[4:03] I think sometimes people don't even realize that stepping out
[4:05] of their comfort zones doesn't always have to be a huge life
[4:08] changing thing. It can be something as simple as
[4:11] trying a new hobby, taking on a new responsibility at work, or
[4:15] even just talking to someone you don't know well.
[4:18] Little things like that can help you build confidence, right?
[4:22] Exactly, it's all about building that confidence over time, and
[4:25] as you start to step out of your comfort zone more often, you'll
[4:28] notice that you become more adaptable.
[4:30] Your brain actually starts to look for solutions instead of
[4:33] focusing on problems. For example, I remember when I
[4:36] first started giving presentations, I was terrified
[4:38] of speaking in front of people, but I pushed myself to do it
[4:41] even though it felt uncomfortable.
[4:43] After a few times I started to enjoy it because I knew what to
[4:46] expect and how to handle the nerves.
[4:48] That's such a great example, Louis.
[4:50] I've heard so many people say that public speaking is one of
[4:53] their biggest fears. But like you said, the more you
[4:56] do it, the easier it gets. OK, so here's a fun fact for
[5:04] you, Louis, and for all of our listeners.
[5:07] Did you know that some scientists believe our brains
[5:09] actually grow when we step out of our comfort zones?
[5:13] Wait, really? How does that work?
[5:15] Yeah, when we try new things or push ourselves, our brains form
[5:19] new connections. This process is called
[5:22] neuroplasticity. It's like our brains are
[5:24] becoming stronger and more flexible, just like our muscles
[5:28] do when we work out. So every time we do something
[5:31] challenging or unfamiliar, we're actually making our brains
[5:34] smarter. That's amazing.
[5:36] So every time we try something new, we're not just growing
[5:39] emotionally, we're growing physically too.
[5:41] Our brains are literally changing.
[5:43] I love that. Exactly.
[5:46] So the next time you're thinking about staying in your safe
[5:48] little bubble, just remember you're not only growing as a
[5:52] person, but you're also strengthening your brain.
[5:59] So Louis, let's wrap this up. What would you say is the most
[6:02] important take away for our listeners today?
[6:05] I think the most important thing is to remember that stepping out
[6:07] of your comfort zone doesn't have to be a huge leap.
[6:10] It's the small, consistent steps that make a big difference over
[6:14] time. Don't be afraid to try new
[6:16] things, make mistakes, and learn from them.
[6:18] It's all part of growing and becoming the best version of
[6:20] yourself. I love that.
[6:23] So whether it's speaking up in class, trying a new hobby, or
[6:26] learning something new, remember that growth happens when you
[6:29] step out of that comfort zone. It's not always easy, but it's
[6:33] always worth it. Thanks so much for being here,
[6:37] Louis. Thanks for having me Lisa.
[6:39] It's been great chatting with you about this topic.
[6:41] I hope everyone listening is feeling inspired to take that
[6:44] first step. And thank you all for listening

[6:52] you're going to do to step out of your comfort zone.
[6:55] We'll see you next time. Now it's time to learn some
[7:02] important vocabulary related to the topic.
[7:05] The first word of today is comfort zone.
[7:08] It means a psychological state in which a person feels safe,
[7:11] comfortable, and free from stress or challenges.
[7:14] Example, staying in your comfort zone might feel easy, but it
[7:18] limits your personal growth. Next word is challenge.
[7:24] It means a task or situation that tests someone's abilities
[7:28] or requires effort to overcome Example.
[7:32] Taking on a new challenge at work can help you develop new
[7:35] skills. Next word is adaptable.
[7:39] It means able to adjust to new conditions or environments
[7:43] easily Example. People who step out of their
[7:46] comfort zones often become more adaptable to change.
[7:51] Next word is risk. It means the possibility of
[7:54] something unpleasant or unwelcome happening.
[7:57] Example Trying something new involves taking a risk, but it's
[8:01] often worth it. The last word is
[8:04] neuroplasticity. It means the brain's ability to
[8:08] reorganize itself by forming new neural connections in response
[8:13] to learning or experience. Example Stepping out of your
[8:17] comfort zone stimulates neuroplasticity in your brain.
