[0:04] Hi everyone, and welcome back to the Simple English Podcast where
[0:07] we explore ideas that can make your life better one step at a
[0:11] time. I'm Lisa, your host, and today
[0:13] we're diving into a topic that I know touches all of us at some
[0:17] point in life. How to find purpose and meaning
[0:19] in everyday life. Have you ever found yourself
[0:22] lying in bed staring at the ceiling and wondering why am I
[0:26] doing what I'm doing? Well, you're not alone.
[0:30] Finding purpose can feel like trying to solve a puzzle with
[0:33] missing pieces. But today we have someone who
[0:36] might just help us find those pieces.
[0:38] Steven, a life coach and someone who has helped hundreds of
[0:42] people discover their purpose. As always, don't forget to check
[0:45] out the free PDF file in the comments section below to get
[0:49] the full transcript and vocabulary for this episode.
[0:57] Welcome, Steven. Thanks Lisa, it's a pleasure to
[0:59] be here. And wow, that intro already has
[1:02] me hooked. Finding purpose is one of my
[1:05] favorite topics because it's such a universal human
[1:07] experience. It really is.
[1:10] So let's get started. Stick around, because by the end
[1:13] of this episode, you'll walk away with actionable tips to
[1:16] bring meaning into your daily life.
[1:19] Ready, Steven? Absolutely.
[1:22] Let's go. All right, Steven, let's start
[1:29] with the basics. What does it even mean to find
[1:32] purpose? Great question.
[1:34] Finding purpose doesn't necessarily mean finding a grand
[1:37] mission like curing diseases or climbing Mount Everest.
[1:40] Purpose is really about aligning your daily actions with your
[1:43] values and doing things that make you feel fulfilled.
[1:45] It's the why behind what you do. That makes sense, but why do you
[1:50] think so many people struggle to find their purpose?
[1:54] I think it's because we often look for purpose in the wrong
[1:56] places. Society tells us that purpose
[2:00] comes from big achievements, landing your dream job, earning
[2:04] lots of money, or being famous. While those things can be
[2:07] fulfilling, purpose is often found in the smaller, more
[2:10] personal moments. Like what?
[2:13] Can you give us an example? Sure, let's take a simple
[2:16] example. Think about a parent who spends
[2:18] their evenings helping their child with homework.
[2:21] It might not seem glamorous, but for that parent, their purpose
[2:25] could be creating opportunities for their child to succeed.
[2:28] It's meaningful to them because it aligns with their values of
[2:31] family and education. Wow, that's such a beautiful
[2:34] example. So how can someone figure out
[2:37] what their purpose is? One way is to ask yourself three
[2:41] key questions. What do I care about deeply?
[2:45] What am I naturally good at or drawn to?
[2:48] How can I use these things to serve others or create value?
[2:52] I love those questions. Let's try to make it practical
[2:55] for our listeners. What about someone who feels
[2:58] stuck in a nine to five job and doesn't feel any sense of
[3:01] purpose? That's such a common situation.
[3:05] I'd say start small. You don't have to quit your job
[3:08] tomorrow to find purpose. Instead, look for opportunities
[3:11] to bring meaning into your daily routine.
[3:14] For example, if you're good at listening, maybe you could
[3:16] mentor a younger colleague. Or, if you love art, take 30
[3:20] minutes after work to paint or draw.
[3:23] It sounds like you're saying purpose doesn't have to come
[3:25] from your job alone. Exactly.
[3:29] Purpose can be found in hobbies, relationships, or even in how
[3:32] you approach mundane tasks. One of my clients found purpose
[3:36] in simply greeting everyone in her office with a smile.
[3:40] It sounds small, but she said it made her days brighter and made
[3:43] others feel good too. That's so inspiring.
[3:47] What about people who feel overwhelmed, like they want to
[3:50] find their purpose but they don't even know where to start
[3:54] because life feels so chaotic? Great point, Lisa.
[3:58] For those feeling overwhelmed, I'd recommend focusing on one
[4:01] small area of life to start. Let's say you feel like your
[4:05] personal life is chaotic. Start with one action.
[4:09] Maybe call a friend you haven't spoken to in a while.
[4:12] Often we underestimate the power of connection.
[4:16] That's true, even 1 positive conversation can completely
[4:20] shift your mindset for the day. Exactly.
[4:24] Another tip I give is to focus on what you're grateful for.
[4:28] Gratitude shifts your perspective and helps you see
[4:31] what's meaningful in your life already.
[4:33] For example, if you're grateful for your health, maybe your
[4:36] purpose right now is to nurture it by exercising or eating
[4:39] better. That's such a practical
[4:42] approach. I think people often feel like
[4:44] purpose has to be something epic, but what you're saying is
[4:48] that it's often found in the everyday things we take for
[4:51] granted. Exactly, Lisa.
[4:54] And here's another exercise that can help write down your ideal
[4:58] day. Imagine if there were no
[5:01] limitations. What would a day that truly
[5:03] fulfills you look like? Then work backward.
[5:07] Even if you can't create that ideal day entirely, you can
[5:10] start implementing small parts of it.
[5:13] That's such a great exercise, I think I'll try that myself.
[5:18] Do you think our purpose changes over time?
[5:21] Absolutely. Your purpose will evolve as you
[5:24] grow. What feels meaningful to you in
[5:26] your 20s might be very different from what fulfills you in your
[5:29] 40s or 60s. Life circumstances,
[5:33] relationships, and personal growth all play a role.
[5:36] The key is to stay curious and open to change.
[5:40] That's such a comforting thought that it's OK if we don't have
[5:44] everything figured out right away.
[5:47] Exactly, purpose isn't a one time discovery, it's a journey
[5:51] and it's OK to explore and redefine it as you go.
[5:59] This is all so insightful, Steven.
[6:01] Let's take a quick break for our fun fact of the day.
[6:04] Did you know that in Japan they have a concept called Ikigai?
[6:09] Oh yes, Ikigai is fascinating. For those who don't know, ikigai
[6:14] roughly translates to reason for being.
[6:17] It's about finding that sweet spot where what you love, what
[6:21] you're good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid
[6:23] for. All overlap.
[6:25] Isn't that amazing? It is, and what I love about
[6:29] ikigai is that it encourages people to find joy in small,
[6:33] everyday activities, not just big achievements.
[6:36] Even something as simple as brewing your morning coffee can
[6:39] be part of your ikigai if it brings you joy and mindfulness.
[6:43] I love that perspective. It really takes the pressure off
[6:46] trying to find some giant life mission.
[6:54] All right, Steven, as we wrap up, what's the one take away
[6:57] you'd like our listeners to remember?
[7:00] I'd say this purpose isn't something you find once and keep
[7:04] forever. It evolves.
[7:06] What matters is staying curious and intentional about how you
[7:08] spend your time. Look for small, meaningful ways
[7:11] to align your actions with your values and purpose will
[7:14] naturally follow. Beautifully said.
[7:18] And for our listeners, remember that purpose isn't out there
[7:22] somewhere waiting to be found. It's something you create step
[7:26] by step every day. Absolutely, and if anyone
[7:31] listening feels lost, that's OK. Start with one small thing that
[7:35] brings you joy or serves others and let it grow from there.
[7:39] Thank you so much Steven, for sharing your wisdom today.
[7:43] This was such an inspiring conversation.
[7:46] Thank you, Lisa, it was an absolute pleasure.
[7:49] All right everyone, that's it for today's episode of the

[7:58] need a little inspiration. See you next time and remember
[8:02] your purpose starts with your next step.
[8:05] Bye. Bye everyone.
[8:12] Now it's time to learn some important vocabulary related to
[8:16] the topic. The first word of today is
[8:18] purpose. It means the reason for which
[8:21] something is done or created or for which something exists.
[8:25] Example. Finding your purpose in life can
[8:28] lead to a deeper sense of fulfillment and satisfaction.
[8:33] Next word is fulfillment. It means the achievement of
[8:37] something desired, promised, or predicted.
[8:40] Example, she found fulfillment in helping others through her
[8:44] work as a teacher. Next word is values.
[8:47] It means principles or standards of behavior, one's judgment of
[8:52] what is important in life. Example, living according to
[8:56] your values can lead to a greater sense of purpose.
[9:00] Next word is gratitude. It means the quality of being
[9:03] thankful, readiness to show appreciation and return
[9:07] kindness. Example, She expressed her
[9:10] gratitude for the support of her family during difficult times.
[9:14] Next word is self discovery. It means the process of gaining
[9:20] insight into one's own character and identity.
[9:24] Example, the journey of self discovery often helps people
[9:27] understand their true purpose in life.
[9:30] Next word is mindfulness. It means the quality or state of
[9:34] being conscious or aware of something.
[9:37] Example, practicing mindfulness can help you appreciate the
[9:40] small moments that bring meaning to life.
[9:44] Next word is reflection. It means serious thought or
[9:49] consideration, often about one's life, actions or decisions.
[9:54] Example taking time for daily reflection can help you assess
[9:58] whether you are living in accordance with your purpose.
[10:01] The last word is resilience. It means the capacity to recover
[10:06] quickly from difficulties, toughness.
[10:10] Example Building resilience allows people to find meaning in
[10:14] their struggles and continue moving forward.
