[0:04] Hey everyone, welcome back to the Simple English Podcast.
[0:08] I'm your host Lisa, and I'm so glad you're here with us today.
[0:11] In this episode, we're going to talk about something that can
[0:13] make conversations more fun and help you connect with others.
[0:17] How to talk about your hobbies and interests in English.
[0:20] So let me ask you, do you ever feel nervous when someone asks
[0:24] you? What do you do for fun?
[0:27] Or maybe you know what to say, but you just don't know how to
[0:30] say it in English. Don't worry, today we're going
[0:33] to make it super easy. After this episode, you'll be
[0:37] able to talk about your favorite activities confidently in clear
[0:41] and simple English. And to help me with that, I've
[0:44] invited a special guest, my good friend Lucas.
[0:47] As always, don't forget to check out the free PDF file in the
[0:51] comments section below to get the full transcript and
[0:54] vocabulary for this episode. Hey, Lucas, how's it going?
[1:02] Hey Lisa, I'm doing great. Thanks for having me.
[1:05] I'm really excited to talk about this topic because hobbies are
[1:07] such a great way to start conversations, especially when
[1:10] you're learning a new language. Absolutely.
[1:13] So whether you like painting, playing sports or even
[1:16] collecting stamps, today we'll learn some useful phrases, share
[1:20] real examples, and even throw in a fun factor too.
[1:23] Are you ready, Lucas? Ready when you are, Lisa.
[1:27] All right, let's start with the basics.
[1:29] Lucas, what's the easiest way to talk about your hobbies in
[1:32] English? One of the easiest ways to start
[1:35] is by using simple phrases like I enjoy or I'm interested in or
[1:41] I love or I like to spend my free time.
[1:45] For example, I could say I enjoy playing soccer with my friends
[1:49] on the weekends, or I love reading science fiction books
[1:51] when I have time. Exactly, and if you want to make
[1:55] it sound more natural you can add a bit more detail like why
[1:59] you enjoy the activity or how often you do it.
[2:02] So instead of just saying I enjoy playing the guitar, you
[2:06] could say something like I enjoy playing the guitar because it
[2:09] helps me relax after a long day at work and I try to practice
[2:13] every evening. Yes, adding a little more detail
[2:17] can really make your conversation more interesting.
[2:20] For example, I love hiking. So I might say I love hiking
[2:24] because it's a great way to connect with nature and I
[2:26] usually go on a hike at least once a month.
[2:29] That's a great example, Lucas. And for those listening, don't
[2:33] feel like you have to say something complicated.
[2:36] Even simple sentences can be powerful.
[2:38] If you're just starting out with English, you could say something
[2:41] like I like painting in my free time or I enjoy playing video
[2:44] games with my friends. So let's dive a bit deeper.
[2:48] Lucas, why do you think it's important to be able to talk
[2:51] about hobbies when learning English?
[2:53] Well, hobbies are such a big part of who we are, right?
[2:56] Talking about what you love to do helps you build connections
[3:00] with people. It's also a great way to
[3:02] practice English in a more relaxed and personal way.
[3:05] Plus, it gives you confidence because you're talking about
[3:08] something you already know well, your own interests.
[3:12] I completely agree, and what's really cool is that when you
[3:15] talk about your hobbies it can actually lead to longer
[3:18] conversations. For example, if I tell someone I
[3:22] enjoy traveling, especially to new places where I can try
[3:25] different foods, they might respond with oh I love traveling
[3:29] too. What's your favorite country you
[3:31] visited? Exactly, and it's also a good
[3:34] way to find common interests with people.
[3:36] I once met someone at a party and we started talking about our
[3:39] hobbies. I mentioned that I'm really into
[3:42] photography and it turned out that they also love photography.
[3:45] We ended up having a long conversation about our favorite
[3:47] places to take pictures. That's such a good point.
[3:51] So for everyone listening, the next time you meet someone,
[3:54] don't be afraid to ask them about their hobbies.
[3:57] It's a great way to keep the conversation going and you might
[3:59] even find something you both enjoy doing.
[4:02] OK, now let's talk about how you can respond when someone asks
[4:05] you about their hobbies. For example, if someone says I
[4:09] like gardening, you can keep the conversation going by asking
[4:12] follow up questions like oh really?
[4:15] What do you like to grow? How did you get into that?
[4:18] Do you have a favorite plant? This way you're showing interest
[4:22] in keeping the conversation flowing.
[4:25] Yes, and it's also a good way to practice listening skills.
[4:28] By asking questions, you're not only practicing speaking, but
[4:31] also learning new words and phrases from the person you're
[4:35] talking to. For example, if someone says I'm
[4:38] really into photography, you could ask, you know, what kind
[4:40] of camera do you use? Or what's your favorite thing to
[4:44] take pictures of? Absolutely, and don't worry if
[4:48] you make mistakes, it's all part of learning.
[4:50] The most important thing is to keep practicing.
[4:53] The more you talk about your hobbies in English, the more
[4:56] natural it will feel. All right, now it's time for our
[5:03] fun fact. Did you know that having a hobby
[5:07] can actually make you a happier and healthier person?
[5:11] Studies show that people who regularly engage in hobbies they
[5:14] enjoy tend to have lower stress levels and higher life
[5:17] satisfaction. Plus, talking about your hobbies
[5:20] can even make you more likable in social situations.
[5:24] That's so true, Lisa. I know that whenever I spend
[5:27] time on my hobbies, like playing the guitar or going for a run, I
[5:31] feel more relaxed and energized afterward.
[5:33] And when I talk about my hobbies with others, it's always fun to
[5:37] share experiences. Exactly, so not only are hobbies
[5:41] good for your mental health, but they're also a great way to
[5:44] connect with people. If you ever feel stuck in a
[5:47] conversation, just ask someone about their hobbies.
[5:50] It's almost guaranteed to spark a good discussion.
[5:58] All right, that brings us to the end of today's episode.
[6:01] Let's do a quick recap of what we learned.
[6:04] Talking about your hobbies and interests in English doesn't
[6:07] have to be difficult. Just remember to use simple
[6:10] phrases like I enjoy, I love, or I'm interested in.
[6:14] Add details about why you enjoy the hobby and how often you do
[6:17] it. Ask follow up questions to keep
[6:20] the conversation going. And don't forget talking about
[6:23] your hobbies is a great way to practice English and connect
[6:27] with new people. So next time you meet someone,
[6:30] give it a try. Yeah, and don't be afraid to
[6:33] make mistakes. The more you practice, the more
[6:35] confident you'll become. Just have fun with it.
[6:39] Thanks so much for joining me today, Lucas.
[6:41] It was great having you on the show.
[6:43] Thanks Lisa, it was a lot of fun.
[6:46] And thank you to all our listeners.
