I Legally Bought 5 Classic Cars From A Widow. Someone Posing As Her Grandson Tried...

## Transcript

[0:00] I legally bought 5 classic cars from a widow.
[0:02] Someone posing as her grandson tried to sue but was exposed as
[0:05] her granddaughter's ex. Original post.
[0:09] I'm close friends with a Co worker and we've helped his
[0:11] mother in her 80s with house maintenance.
[0:13] His mother's neighbor, I'll call her Elaine, was in her 90s in
[0:17] 2016 when Elaine's husband, who was in the home, died while
[0:21] doing maintenance on my coworker's mother's house.
[0:23] I drove there in my 1975 Falcon and Elaine came out to ask me to
[0:27] have a look at some cars I might like that had belonged to her
[0:29] husband. I won't go into detail except
[0:32] three were in good drivable condition and worth a decent
[0:34] figure, and two more were ruined but good parts cars.
[0:37] At the time, I couldn't afford anywhere near what they were
[0:40] genuinely worth. 2 or at least in the top five desirable
[0:43] Australian classics. I told her what they could fetch
[0:45] on the open market, but she was happy to take $5000 for all 5
[0:49] cars well under their value. She wanted to make sure they
[0:52] went to someone who would appreciate them and I paid for
[0:55] and collected them. A week later and I still have
[0:57] the three good ones. 2 now on historic registration and the
[1:00] other in storage. Lane passed away in the middle
[1:03] of this year and her grandson is on the warpath over the cars.
[1:06] He's found my contact details and phoned me several times
[1:09] threatening to sue for effectively stealing the cars
[1:12] from his grandmother and has turned up at my front door once
[1:14] demanding the return of the cars.
[1:16] I have not been served or received anything in writing
[1:19] from him in a legal sense, only his business card, which sounds
[1:22] dodgy. I've verified he's an actual
[1:24] lawyer, as he claims through a website of his employer which
[1:27] lists him with a photo as specializing in commercial and
[1:30] insurance law, just like his business card.
[1:32] I'd have expected if there was a real legal issue with the
[1:35] ownership of the cars, it would be in relation to the
[1:37] grandmother's estate proceedings and I'd be contacted by mail by
[1:40] someone acting as executor, not via phone calls and door stop
[1:43] visits by 1 angry smug bastard acting like it's happening
[1:46] between me and him alone. Since I'm not a lawyer and my
[1:49] presumptions could be completely out, I'm posting here if need
[1:52] be. I could now afford the market
[1:54] price of all the cars. Is the grandson likely to have a
[1:57] case and should I find a lawyer of my own?
[1:59] Relevant comments RCG now, but if Elaine's husband left them to
[2:03] her in his will, she was free to do with them as she pleased.
[2:06] Ergo, the grandson has no claim. He'd be banking on your
[2:09] uncertainty of that to strong arm you into cutting a deal.
[2:12] Don't ignore any official summons or claims, but you can
[2:15] safely tell him to sod off over the phone.
[2:18] If you want to get really petty, you could contact his law firm
[2:21] and complain about him, but as long as he wasn't intimating
[2:23] that his employer was in any way involved, it's none of their
[2:26] business, so they could tell you.
[2:27] Cool, So what? OOP, thanks.
[2:32] Banking on my uncertainty is a good way to describe the vibe
[2:34] I'm getting from him. He's not exactly throwing his
[2:37] law firm's name around, but it is on the business card.
[2:39] He gave me hope on what the cars are.
[2:42] I feel more comfortable describing them now after
[2:44] reading the responses here. One registered is an XYGT
[2:47] replica in nice shape built from a Fairmont.
[2:50] The other registered is an XB Fairmont coupe in excellent
[2:53] original condition. And the third I'm still working
[2:55] on getting back on the road is an XA sedan Falcon 506.
[2:59] The last two were wrecks and have already been parted out and
[3:01] the good bits kept a spare XA sedan and an XW that looks like
[3:06] it had spent 30 years as yard art.
[3:08] The XW collapsed at the torque boxes and plenum while being
[3:11] trailered and nearly came off in 2 pieces.
[3:13] But worth it for the glass and trim alone.
[3:16] Update I spoke with my Co worker about the issue and he talked
[3:19] with his mother who clued me into her neighbor Elaine from my
[3:22] previous post not having any grandsons.
[3:24] My Co worker's mother is still in contact with Elaine's son and
[3:27] daughter as they own and still work on Elaine's old house next
[3:30] door. She put them in contact with me.
[3:33] They wanted to know who it was who was actually threatening.
[3:35] What about the cars? As Elaine has no grandsons and
[3:38] we spoke, they identified the lawyer grandson as an old ex he
[3:42] was once a partner of, but not married to one of Elaine's
[3:45] granddaughters for a few years. He's also known to be in a lot
[3:48] of debt, which might explain desperate hunting for valuable
[3:51] items. Elaine's son and daughter
[3:53] reiterated that their dad had left instructions to Elaine for
[3:56] the cars to go to someone who cherish them, and they were
[3:58] happy they did and glad to hear from me that they're still being
[4:01] looked after together. I haven't contacted the faux
[4:04] Grandsons law firm yet. I have a lot of evidence of his
[4:07] misrepresentations to me and after Googling Nest doubled our
[4:10] law, I'm not 100% sure of the legality of all of it,
[4:13] especially about sharing my home security and dash Cam recordings
[4:16] directly to the other firm or even speaking directly to them.
[4:19] I'll go through my own legal representation there as a filter
[4:22] on what I need to give them to make sure they know of his
[4:24] behavior linked to their firm. Small update, fake grandson came
[4:28] around twice more. I now have multiple records of
[4:30] him visiting my residence, threats via text, and many phone
[4:33] calls to me after I asked him to not contact me again except in
[4:36] writing. Complaints have been made
[4:38] through my lawyer to his firm and relevant regulatory bodies.
[4:42] I informed him of the complaints on Thursday and reiterated not
[4:44] to contact me again and I haven't heard a peep from him
[4:47] since. Last update.
[4:49] Fake grandson had already been dismissed from the firm before
[4:51] my lawyer and I complained and he already has complaints
[4:54] against him for other reasons. Now to the next story.
[4:57] Story 2. I cut ties with my best friend
[5:00] after discovering she slept with my boyfriend.
[5:02] She threatened suit and my family pressured me to forgive
[5:05] her. Original post and I don't care.
[5:08] I haven't reached out. She slept with my boyfriend
[5:11] behind my back. We're both 20F and we've been
[5:14] friends since reception. Four to five years old.
[5:16] UK thing. She was my sister, my rock.
[5:19] We stood by each other through everything.
[5:21] When my parents divorced, she was there to offer a shoulder
[5:24] for me to cry on. When her grandmother died, I was
[5:27] there keeping her afloat. Throughout high school.
[5:29] I'd been dating my boyfriend, 21 million for about 3 years.
[5:34] We started dating in sixth form, a version of UK college, and he
[5:37] was my first serious relationship.
[5:39] I introduced him to my family. He was many of my firsts.
[5:43] He was sweet, a little awkward being a gamer guy, but he
[5:46] treated me to date nights and always made me feel special.
[5:49] Maybe this is me being young and dumb, but I thought I'd marry
[5:51] this guy someday. This was something I told my
[5:54] best friend. Well about a month ago while my
[5:57] boyfriend was in the shower, I saw a text notification pop up
[6:00] on his phone. We look at each other's
[6:02] notifications all the time, so I grabbed his phone to see it.
[6:05] It was from her asking if they were still on for tonight and if
[6:08] she should wear his favorite dress.
[6:10] He told me he was hanging out with friends and going drinking.
[6:13] Him going drinking with friends wasn't unusual so I never
[6:16] thought anything of it. But in hindsight, I wonder how
[6:18] much of him going out was with friends and how much of it was
[6:21] going out with her. I saved screenshots of their
[6:23] conversations. I sent them to myself.
[6:26] I showed him the messages when he came out of the bathroom and
[6:29] demanded he explain himself about them.
[6:31] I couldn't contain how upset and angry and hurt I was.
[6:35] An argument ensued where I told him he was disgusting and I left
[6:38] his place. Shortly after arriving home I
[6:41] started getting bombarded with calls and texts from my best
[6:43] friend. I answered none of her calls.
[6:46] I couldn't stomach hearing her voice but her texts ranged from
[6:49] she never meant to hurt me. My boyfriend hit on her first,
[6:52] it didn't mean anything. Then it got angry saying I
[6:56] should hear her out. If I was a real friend I would
[6:59] take her calls. I'm being petty and childish for
[7:01] not listening to her side. Then back to sadness, saying I
[7:05] was her closest friend in the world and she didn't want to
[7:07] lose me. My boyfriend was strangely quiet
[7:09] during this time. After a few days I got myself
[7:12] together enough to send them both messages.
[7:15] Maybe it was cowardly but I didn't have the strength to call
[7:17] them. I told my now ex-boyfriend that
[7:20] we were done and I won't give cheaters any chances with me.
[7:23] He responded by trying to call me, but after the third or
[7:26] fourth attempt he gave up. He sent me a final message
[7:29] saying it wasn't that big of a deal that they just fooled
[7:31] around, but agreeing he didn't want to date me anymore.
[7:34] My ex best friend was more persistent after I told her I
[7:37] wanted nothing to do with her. Day after day I'd get messages
[7:40] and calls from her demanding to talk, demanding we resolve this,
[7:45] demanding I not say anything to anyone, saying she stopped
[7:48] seeing him, saying she'll kill herself if I don't talk to her.
[7:52] Really fucked up shit. I ended up confiding to a mutual
[7:55] friend about what was going on because I was seriously
[7:57] beginning to wonder if I was being a bitch.
[8:00] This friend reassured me that my feelings were justified.
[8:02] However, I wasn't expecting this friend to spread around.
[8:05] What happened? The gossip spread like wildfire
[8:08] and a few days ago my ex best friend tried to take her life.
[8:11] I said nothing. I haven't visited her in the
[8:14] hospital, I haven't sent any messages to her family.
[8:17] Now her older sister keeps messaging me telling me I'm a
[8:20] heartless bitch for leaving her at her lowest, for not trying to
[8:23] prevent this and that everyone makes mistakes and that her
[8:26] sister didn't intentionally hurt me.
[8:28] Maybe it does make me a heartless bitch, but I don't
[8:30] care. I'm relieved she survived, but
[8:33] I'll never forgive her. I'll never forgive her betrayal.
[8:37] She destroyed our friendship when she slept with my
[8:39] boyfriend. Relevant comments.
[8:42] OP needs to move forward in a healthy way without being bitter
[8:45] about her ex and the best friend.
[8:46] Oh up, thank you. I know I don't think I'm over
[8:49] what they did to me. 3 year relationship and a 16 year
[8:53] friendship down the drain. I'll look into therapy but
[8:56] between school work and a part time job it might be difficult.
[8:59] It's stupid because I wasn't feeling guilty that she had
[9:01] attempted to take her life, but after what her sister said I was
[9:04] starting to feel guilty for not feeling guilty if that makes
[9:08] sense. It was really getting to me so I
[9:10] had to tell someone. I'm glad she survived but I'm
[9:13] not looking forward to the next few days.
[9:16] I've already gotten messages from her cousin today Commenter
[9:19] one good. Don't contact her or her family,
[9:22] that's done for. You're not responsible for her
[9:25] mental health. And make better friends not
[9:28] gossiping ones like the one who told everyone.
[9:30] Just cut them off. And if your family tries to
[9:33] pressure you to be friends with her, warn them that you're not
[9:36] above going Elsie with them. Edit block them all as well ope.
[9:41] Unfortunately I don't think the friend I told had intended for
[9:44] it to get so bad. She really helped me understand
[9:47] that I wasn't being an awful person for not giving my ex BFF
[9:50] a second chance. She cheered me up and made me
[9:53] feel better but she told the rest of our friend group and
[9:55] after that it was like Pandora's box.
[9:57] I've blocked my ex and my ex BFF.
[10:00] I've blocked her sister as well and it's looking like I'll need
[10:02] to block one of her cousins. This makes me a little sad.
[10:06] I was always so close with her cousins.
[10:08] My dad agrees with me 100% and told me I was doing the right
[10:12] thing. When I told my mom I could tell
[10:14] she was disappointed and tried suggesting I talk to my ex BFF
[10:17] but I shut that down real quick and she backed off.
[10:20] Update one. Hey again, it's been a while.
[10:23] 1st I want to thank everyone for all of their comments and
[10:26] support. In hindsight I know now I wasn't
[10:29] being a bitch, but in the moment when I was being bombarded by
[10:31] texts and calls from her family, it's hard not to let those
[10:34] thoughts mess with your head. I didn't know if I was going to
[10:37] post an update but some things have happened so this might get
[10:40] a little long. Sorry.
[10:42] Giving fake names. XBFF is Nikki, her older sister
[10:46] is Tammy, XBF is Josh. I'll name anyone relevant as I
[10:50] go. So I mentioned in a comment that
[10:52] my mom wanted to speak to me later that day.
[10:55] I had a few replies warning me that she would try to pressure
[10:58] me into forgiving Nikki, and they were right.
[11:00] She came over to my dad's that evening and wanted a
[11:02] conversation in private. She asked if I'd spoken to Nikki
[11:05] yet. I said no.
[11:07] She asked if I was going to. I said no.
[11:10] I was trying to be as firm as possible because I knew what she
[11:13] was about to do. She asked don't you think you
[11:15] should? My response was no, I don't see
[11:19] why I should. I sent her a final message
[11:22] almost a month ago. This is where things began to
[11:24] really go South in the conversation.
[11:27] Mom, love, she's in the hospital right now.
[11:30] She needs all the support she can get.
[11:32] You're meant to be her friend. I didn't even know about her
[11:35] condition until her mother called me.
[11:37] Me, really. I meant to be her friend after
[11:40] she slept with Josh behind my back.
[11:43] I didn't say anything about her because I didn't want to talk
[11:45] about her. Mom, are you really going to
[11:48] hold a silly grudge? I understand she hurt you, but
[11:51] she's hurting so much more right now.
[11:53] Love me. She's hurting Mom.
[11:57] Yes, you both are. I raised you to be a kind,
[12:00] forgiving person. Why can't you forgive her?
[12:03] Me. What?
[12:05] Like how Dad should have forgiven you?
[12:07] This wasn't my finest moment. I didn't bring it up before
[12:10] because it wasn't relevant, but the reason why my parents
[12:13] divorced was due to infidelity on mom's end and it wasn't only
[12:16] a one time thing. Not that it matters even if it
[12:18] had been, but my mom always believed dad should have just
[12:21] forgiven her. I admit this was a low blow for
[12:24] me and the conversation spiraled into an argument from there with
[12:27] both of us saying some not so kind things to each other.
[12:29] Eventually I decided the conversation was over because we
[12:32] were just going around in circles and heading into yelling
[12:35] territory so I told her to leave and I'll try talking to her
[12:37] again when we've both calmed down.
[12:39] When she was leaving she made said this.
[12:42] I hope you're not as cruel as your father.
[12:44] I'm typically not an angry person, but this infuriated and
[12:47] hurt me. I lived 5050 between my parents.
[12:51] They both made sure I had everything I could need or want.
[12:53] But she felt her situation and struggles were undeserved.
[12:56] Dad never helped with bills or payments that didn't involve me.
[12:59] She expected more. Cheaters always do.
[13:02] I didn't say anything when she left, I just blocked her number
[13:05] and social media accounts and cried.
[13:07] She cared more about the girl who had hurt her daughter than
[13:10] said daughter. She realized pretty quickly what
[13:12] had happened and came back the next day.
[13:14] But dad told her I didn't want to talk to her true and she had
[13:17] to leave. It took maybe half an hour
[13:19] before she finally left. The next few days she kept
[13:22] trying to reach me through other people, but I stayed silent.
[13:25] The Friday after my post, I decided I felt calm enough to
[13:28] talk to her and unblocked her. We spoke over the phone, which
[13:31] wasn't as exciting as above. Basically it was her apologizing
[13:35] and telling me she was wrong for trying to force me to forgive
[13:37] Nikki, that she'll respect my decision, but tried to suggest I
[13:40] think about it. I very firmly told her I was not
[13:43] forgiving Nikki. She just said OK.
[13:46] Things didn't really feel the same with us.
[13:48] I couldn't bring myself to be as chatty with her as I was before,
[13:51] and it didn't help that she kept giving me updates about Nikki.
[13:54] The first time she did it, she told me Nikki had been put on a
[13:57] 72 hour psych hold, assessed, and eventually released.
[14:00] I told her I didn't want any updates on Nikki's situation.
[14:04] I won't stop her from checking in, but I didn't want to be
[14:07] involved. She complained and said she
[14:09] thought I'd want to visit her, but I threatened to block her
[14:11] again if she kept pushing and she shut up.
[14:14] Nothing was mentioned about Nikki for a couple of weeks
[14:16] before mom again broke my boundary and brought her up,
[14:19] telling me about how Josh had stopped talking to her and how
[14:21] Nikki needed a shoulder to cry on.
[14:24] I again told her I didn't want to know and this was her last
[14:26] chance not to bring her up or I would cut her from my life.
[14:29] She complained again but eventually promised it wouldn't
[14:32] happen again. Maybe I should have learned from
[14:34] my mistakes because I know my mother.
[14:36] She doesn't take no for an answer.
[14:38] It was really quiet for a while, my friends and I had all
[14:41] basically carried on from what happened and even though I know
[14:43] a couple of them still occasionally talk to Nikki, they
[14:46] never bring her up around me or tell her I hope how I'm doing.
[14:50] I thought I could finally close this chapter on my life, but
[14:52] Nope. Today my mother called me and
[14:54] asked if I wanted to get lunch. I hadn't seen her in a while So
[14:58] what was the harm I had to the Wetherspoons we plan to eat at
[15:01] and who do I find? Sitting with my mom, Nikki, and
[15:04] her sister Tammy. As soon as Nikki sees me she
[15:07] gets up and tries to hug me but I just raise a hand and take a
[15:10] step back. And this girl has the audacity
[15:12] to look upset. Mom immediately knows she's
[15:14] fucked up because she's scrambling with all of the
[15:16] excuses. It hurts to see you 2 fall apart
[15:19] like this. You were so close I thought
[15:21] you'd forgive her by now. And my favorite, she made a
[15:25] mistake. She misses you.
[15:27] During this time Nikki has been quiet and I can see Tammy's
[15:30] glaring at me. I'm just so fucking angry and
[15:33] upset. I honestly didn't think she'd
[15:35] pull something like this. I wanted to leave and cry but I
[15:38] looked at Nikki and said for someone who's made a mistake she
[15:41] sure hasn't apologized for it yet.
[15:43] She had this guilty look on her face and muttered something
[15:45] about me having her blocked and having no way to.
[15:48] I said is that really all you have to say and she just looked
[15:52] at me confused. I was done.
[15:54] I turned to leave and her sister started yelling after me saying
[15:58] that I owed Nikki a second chance with all the trauma I put
[16:00] her through, while Nikki was begging me to just listen to her
[16:03] and talk to her. I told them all to fuck off and
[16:06] never contact me again and left. I managed to get out of there
[16:09] before Tammy started a fight and went home, where I sent my mom a
[16:12] text a while ago telling her she'd better lose my number
[16:14] because she no longer has a spot in my life.
[16:17] Then I blocked her and just cried.
[16:19] My dad's been doing his best to comfort me, but it just hurts so
[16:22] bad that my own mother did this to me.
[16:24] So that's where things are at right now.
[16:27] I'll update if anything else happens, but this whole
[16:29] situation really fucking sucks. Relevant comments commenter 1.
[16:33] Good on you for knowing your own morals and thoughts and not
[16:36] letting anyone else tell you how to think.
[16:38] I hope your dad supports you in this ope.
[16:41] My dad has been my rock through this.
[16:43] He's always had my back. We've spent the last few hours
[16:46] having some drinks and chatting just to help take my mind off
[16:49] things. My dad's to thank for that.
[16:52] He taught me to stand up for myself and told me being kind
[16:55] doesn't mean being a wet towel. Makes me sad why he had to learn
[16:58] that lesson. Why was OP still in touch with
[17:01] her mother when she cheated on O PS Dad Opie?
[17:04] Because she was still my mom. I was a teenager when my parents
[17:07] divorced and it was my father who encouraged me to maintain a
[17:10] relationship with her. New update Hey there everyone,
[17:15] I'm the girl who made the my ex best friend attempted to take
[17:17] her life posts. I didn't think labeling this
[17:20] post like that really fit. I first want to apologize for
[17:23] taking so long to give you an update and to also thank you for
[17:25] your kind words. I've not been able to reply to
[17:28] many messages and I've had a lot, but I've taken the time to
[17:31] read through every single one and I appreciate every single
[17:34] one of you. This Christmas has been amazing.
[17:37] I spent it with my family, with my dad.
[17:39] I went out Boxing Day night with my friends to party hard and
[17:42] regret it harder the following day.
[17:44] I'm in a much better place than I was back in December 2023.
[17:48] That's kind of why I struggled to give you all an update
[17:51] because around Christmas plus New Year's 2023, I was not in a
[17:54] good place. I really needed to focus on
[17:56] myself and work on getting myself in a better place.
[17:59] As of January 2024, I have been no contact with my mother.
[18:03] Unfortunately. I've seen her since then and
[18:06] I've done my best to avoid talking to her on the three
[18:08] occasions I've had to be in the same place as her.
[18:11] Not out of choice mind you, but it is what it is.
[18:14] During Christmas 2023, she had expected that I was spending it
[18:18] with her and her side of the family.
[18:20] Given the events at that time. This was obviously not happening
[18:23] and my dad told her as much. She lost her mind.
[18:29] She refused to take no as an answer leading up to Christmas,
[18:32] to the point dad and I left for my paternal aunt's house on
[18:35] Christmas Eve to spend the night there.
[18:37] According to a neighbor, my birth giver showed up pretty
[18:40] early in the morning to catch us leaving, but was irate to learn
[18:43] we already weren't there. Thankfully my aunt had moved
[18:46] house quite recently so my mother didn't know the new
[18:48] address, but we came home to parcels completely destroyed on
[18:52] our porch the following Boxing Day.
[18:54] There was even a Christmas card labeled to me.
[18:56] But inside was a horrible letter from my mother describing me as
[18:59] the worst daughter on the planet.
[19:01] That honestly destroyed me and I spent New Year's a mess.
[19:04] It's difficult cutting off your own mother.
[19:06] I spent half of January 2024 trying to fix things with her,
[19:10] but it came to a head when I realized I was the only one
[19:12] forced to compromise. I finally cut off contact and
[19:16] it's been that way since. There's been more between then
[19:18] and now, but I think those are incidents I'll post on my Reddit
[19:21] page or in the comments of this post to prevent it from getting
[19:24] too long. In terms of Nikki, I've heard
[19:26] she's doing better. We've not spoken since my
[19:29] mother's lunch escapade, but she's found a job and, according
[19:32] to a mutual friend, found a new circle.
[19:35] Despite everything that she's put me through, I'm happy for
[19:37] her. It's almost 2:00 AM here in the
[19:40] UK, so if I suddenly stop responding to comments I fall
[19:43] asleep.
