[0:50] Hey, guys, it's Bec Judd.
[0:51] And Jess Roberts.
[0:52] And welcome to Veinish.
[0:53] So Dr. Sean Arendy talked us through male hair transplants.
[0:57] We thought we'd get our friend Darren Palmer from the blog to share his personal experience with it.
[1:01] So welcome back to Veinish, Darren Palmer.
[1:04] Yeah, hey.
[1:05] Hiya.
[1:05] Hello.
[1:06] We're back.
[1:07] Let's talk about hair baby.
[1:10] Let's talk about you and me.
[1:13] Let's talk about all the good things.
[1:17] So last time we spoke, you touched on getting hair transplants.
[1:20] When did you get it done?
[1:21] End November 2025.
[1:23] I actually waited until I had done all of my commitments for the entire year.
[1:29] And then I thought, okay, cool.
[1:31] Now I've got some free space.
[1:33] Yeah.
[1:33] I can look odd.
[1:37] And did you?
[1:38] Surprise, surprise.
[1:39] You look great now.
[1:40] What's the downtime?
[1:41] Yeah.
[1:42] Well, let me, okay.
[1:43] So let me paint you a picture.
[1:44] So first of all, you go in there.
[1:47] So for me, I went in at 7 a.m.
[1:50] They started the procedure at 8.
[1:52] They took all the graphs off.
[1:53] for probably three hours or so.
[1:55] Break for lunch.
[1:56] The grafts are the hair that they're going to implant at the front of your head in the receding part.
[2:02] So they take it from the back?
[2:03] Yeah.
[2:04] Yeah.
[2:04] Let me give you the hack, guys.
[2:05] Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[2:07] This is the hack for men.
[2:09] Okay.
[2:10] Let me show you.
[2:11] Yeah.
[2:11] Here's it.
[2:12] Oh, we're getting a diagram.
[2:13] Yeah, getting a diagram.
[2:15] I love this.
[2:15] Is he like saying?
[2:16] So say this is a man's head, right?
[2:18] Yeah.
[2:19] From the back.
[2:20] They take it pretty much from here.
[2:22] Okay.
[2:23] So the bottom half of the back of your head.
[2:25] Of the back of your head all the way.
[2:26] Where it's dense.
[2:27] Let's say a third of the way towards your ear, kind of.
[2:31] Okay.
[2:31] Because genetically that hair is programmed never to fall out.
[2:35] No way.
[2:35] That's why they use that.
[2:36] What?
[2:37] Why is that?
[2:38] I don't know.
[2:38] Ask Claude.
[2:40] That's why you see dudes walking around with the, you know.
[2:42] Yeah, yeah.
[2:43] It's the.
[2:44] The sunroof.
[2:44] Yeah.
[2:44] Yeah.
[2:45] Yeah.
[2:45] And you're right.
[2:46] They never fall.
[2:47] They never go completely bald.
[2:48] They've always got that little strip of hair around the back between their ears.
[2:51] So they're apparently genetically programmed not to fall out.
[2:54] Okay.
[2:55] So here's the hack, right?
[2:57] Okay.
[2:58] They routinely have to shave that to a zero with a clipper.
[3:03] So if you go in there with normal hair and they do it themselves, you've walked out of there with a normal haircut and a big chunk missing that's a zero.
[3:12] It's obvious.
[3:13] And you can't cut your hair for like a month, right?
[3:17] So you look weird.
[3:18] Yeah.
[3:18] I'm going to show you the photos.
[3:19] It'll blow your mind.
[3:22] So what I did is send me a photo of what the area of zero needs to be.
[3:27] I went into my barber.
[3:28] I went, I'm going to hair transplant.
[3:31] Can you give me zero for this whole area and then give me a proper fade from that point up?
[3:37] Yeah.
[3:37] So as my hair grew, it was normal.
[3:41] Yeah.
[3:41] That is a good hack.
[3:42] And then because of that,
[3:45] Back to the original story, lunch, and then they start doing the implants for three hours.
[3:49] Yeah.
[3:50] What are you doing in the three hours?
[3:52] Because you're not under a general anesthetic.
[3:54] Local.
[3:55] Local.
[3:55] Local, so it doesn't hurt.
[3:56] Yeah.
[3:57] They gave me a prescribed sort of relaxant as well, so something you take, a tablet.
[4:02] And I literally fell asleep for – I was very tired.
[4:06] I had a really, really big year and I was thoroughly exhausted.
[4:09] So I fell asleep for probably one hour out of the three at the beginning and another hour out of the three at the end.
[4:16] And it didn't hurt at all because they give you lots of local.
[4:19] Yeah.
[4:19] However, I also did have – I gave myself pain relief that I had from home.
[4:30] Yeah.
[4:31] And they say don't take it too early or take too much because it can make you vomit.
[4:36] Oh, I know the one.
[4:37] I've had that before and I was so sick.
[4:39] Yeah, because there's adrenaline in the local.
[4:41] Yeah, yeah.
[4:43] So –
[4:44] Nick minute, I'm at home and vomiting with a hair transplant and you're not supposed to raise your blood pressure.
[4:52] Pressure, yes.
[4:53] So I was like, oh, my God, oh, my God, oh, my God, it's all going to fall out, which freaked me out.
[4:57] So I kind of got the timing wrong.
[5:00] So heads up, make sure you listen to your doctors.
[5:05] Do what they say and don't just sort of go rogue like I did.
[5:08] There's rules for a reason.
[5:09] There's rules for a reason.
[5:11] Because you're not allowed to drink either for weeks.
[5:14] So nothing that raises your heart rate, nothing that puts your body under any stress.
[5:20] You need to sleep upright for a week.
[5:22] Oh, that's hard.
[5:23] Yeah, it is hard.
[5:23] I had to buy it.
[5:24] I bought it after my bleph.
[5:25] Oh, my God.
[5:26] Because I'm a face sleeper.
[5:28] I sleep on my eyes.
[5:29] Yeah.
[5:30] I couldn't sleep for a week.
[5:31] Yeah, well, I bought a special little pillow that sort of makes that easier.
[5:35] Yeah.
[5:35] But then what they undersell to you, which is so hilarious, and I'm going to show you the photos, is the swelling.
[5:45] Yes, I've seen some on Instagram.
[5:47] Yes.
[5:48] Yeah, so first of all, so with the pain relief thing, I went a little too early.
[5:53] Mm-hmm.
[5:54] And by the time it all wore off, I was in such a huge amount of pain.
[6:00] Like 9 out of 10, 10 out of 10.
[6:01] I've got a really high pain threshold.
[6:03] Mm-hmm.
[6:05] And I was moaning and I wanted to like shut myself off.
[6:09] So I literally just took a sleeper and went to bed.
[6:11] Yeah, you'd have to at that point.
[6:13] Because I couldn't take any more pain relief.
[6:15] I wasn't allowed.
[6:16] Yeah, yeah.
[6:16] So if you're doing it, try and put the oral pain relief.
[6:21] Push it off as much as you can.
[6:22] Push it off as much as you can.
[6:23] Yeah, because you don't need it at the start when you're all localed up, I guess.
[6:27] I had spinal surgery in 2021.
[6:29] Yeah.
[6:30] And I had one of my discs replaced and I was in hospital for a couple of days and I just hit that buzzer like a game show contestant.
[6:36] I was like, I don't want to know what this feels like at all.
[6:39] Oh, yes.
[6:39] She's fine.
[6:40] But with the hair transplant, I would say –
[6:43] Maybe some external pain relief for me would have been better towards the end, maybe an hour before the end, and then maybe like five hours later or so, four hours later.
[6:54] Yeah.
[6:54] Do you know what I mean?
[6:55] So you could just get through the afternoon.
[6:57] That was not great.
[6:59] So how long were you in pain for?
[7:00] The next day were you fine?
[7:01] Absolutely fine.
[7:02] It was just that day.
[7:03] That's good to know.
[7:04] You're a bit like… Headache.
[7:06] Well, just like aware.
[7:07] Pulsing?
[7:08] Aware, I would say, would be a good way to describe it.
[7:10] And how many grafts?
[7:11] Two and a half thousand?
[7:12] Two and a half thousand and hand sewn into your forehead?
[7:16] Yeah, literally it's like a staple gun.
[7:18] Boom, boom.
[7:18] Wow.
[7:19] Wow.
[7:21] And how much takes and how much falls out?
[7:25] Your hair's looking pretty good.
[7:26] Yeah.
[7:28] I don't mean to boast.
[7:29] It all took.
[7:31] But the doctor was like...
[7:34] Your follicles are about 25% longer than most men.
[7:38] Oh.
[7:39] And I was like, what guy doesn't want to hear that?
[7:42] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[7:43] We like everything longer.
[7:47] Wow.
[7:48] So that means they can put it in deeper so it's got more chance of surviving.
[7:51] Yeah.
[7:52] It depends on the – like I have very thick hair.
[7:55] I've clearly very long follicles.
[7:57] Yeah.
[7:58] It does depend on the quality of your hair.
[8:00] that they put in.
[8:01] And also there's a difference in the amount of follicles in one graft.
[8:08] So sometimes they'll get three, sometimes they'll get two, sometimes they'll get one, and sometimes the hairs are coarser, sometimes they're finer.
[8:15] So if you have someone that knows what they're doing, they put the big chunks, the really dense stuff at the back, they put the really fine, small, singular stuff at the front.
[8:24] They have a nice wavy line that they put on your nail line, so it looks natural.
[8:28] Yeah.
[8:28] Yeah.
[8:29] And it's as much about aesthetics and knowing what a natural shape looks like as it is about having the knowledge and the technique to be able to do it properly.
[8:38] Yeah, you need it all.
[8:39] I really want to get done.
[8:41] Where?
[8:41] Yeah, in these areas.
[8:43] I've got cowlicks.
[8:44] You know, there's cowlicks here.
[8:46] It's all a bit bald and a little bit short.
[8:48] You're showing like for our listeners, you are showing like where a male would typically recede.
[8:53] Yes, mine's like receded.
[8:55] You have like little short baby hairs there.
[8:57] That just won't grow.
[8:58] Yeah, I've kind of got that as well.
[8:59] I've had it since I was a kid.
[9:00] Yeah.
[9:01] Yeah.
[9:02] Yeah, I'm going to do it.
[9:03] We know girls who have had it done.
[9:04] We actually do.
[9:05] We know two girls that have had it done.
[9:06] Yeah.
[9:07] But there's a place in China that they take it out, but the whole long piece instead of, you know, how you buzz cut.
[9:14] Yeah.
[9:14] And they literally stick the whole long piece from the back into the front.
[9:17] So you've got naturally long hair straight away.
[9:19] That's awesome for girls.
[9:20] I know.
[9:20] I know, right.
[9:21] So you don't have to do the shaving part.
[9:23] And they do it on the eyebrows too.
[9:25] And they do it on the eyebrows as well.
[9:26] And then they trim the eyebrows into place.
[9:28] Yeah.
[9:29] And it's amazing because they do the whole.
[9:30] So you have to keep trimming your eyebrows.
[9:32] Yeah, yeah.
[9:32] Me too.
[9:34] I'm like, I hope I never go to jail because I'm all like scissors to cut my eyebrows.
[9:39] My mum, when I was a teenager, she had a sun cancer cut out of her nose.
[9:44] It was pretty hectic.
[9:46] So, they took a skin graft from behind her ear and they grafted it onto her nose.
[9:50] And behind your ear grows hair.
[9:52] So, she would have like this patch of hair on her nose where like, plait your nose hair,
[9:57] I was watching on Botch, someone did the same thing but had a skin cancer and they got the graft from like their pubic area and now they've got pubes growing on her face.
[10:07] What?
[10:08] Yeah.
[10:08] How would they do that?
[10:09] I don't know.
[10:10] It was on Botch.
[10:11] They had to like re-correct it.
[10:12] There's plenty of places to get it from.
[10:14] I know.
[10:15] Rather behind my ear than my pubic area.
[10:17] I was just like, yeah.
[10:18] Fanny face.
[10:18] Fanny face, yeah.
[10:29] It's amazing what they can do with hair transplants now.
[10:31] I'm so intrigued, but I love that they can do it long.
[10:34] But the other thing they did was to stop the swelling because you know how you said the swelling was hectic.
[10:40] And I told my girlfriend, said I had it done, didn't get any swelling.
[10:43] They were on this real strict diet, so they weren't allowed beef.
[10:46] They weren't allowed alcohol.
[10:48] They weren't allowed sugars, histamine, like so canned food, on this strict diet for two weeks.
[10:54] Stuck to it.
[10:55] Not a single swelling.
[10:57] That's really interesting.
[10:58] Yeah.
[10:58] Because, yeah, it's inflammation response to the group.
[11:00] So it's super strict and not allowed to have a lot of water for a week.
[11:05] So it's like you can have sips of water.
[11:08] You have to dehydrate yourself a little bit.
[11:09] Almost dehydrate yourself, yeah.
[11:10] That's interesting.
[11:11] Well, that's interesting.
[11:12] For me, thankfully, my husband had it done six months before me.
[11:14] So you knew.
[11:16] So I saw.
[11:16] I was filming in Sicily when he had it done and he'd send me photos every day.
[11:21] Yeah.
[11:22] And I was like, ooh.
[11:23] But you look so good.
[11:24] I'm still going to get it done.
[11:26] It looked amazing afterwards.
[11:28] Yeah.
[11:28] But for me, because I did the hair hack and I did the cut, and because I didn't do my crown, I didn't have to shave the top of my head, I had my hair cut the same.
[11:37] Mm-hmm.
[11:39] I looked weird for four days.
[11:42] Okay.
[11:43] And that's it?
[11:43] Yeah, and that's it.
[11:44] And I looked – I'll show you the photo.
[11:46] Look.
[11:46] Yeah, I want to see show and tell.
[11:48] You know I'm going to wear a hat, right?
[11:50] Oh, no, no, no hats, no sun, no sea.
[11:52] So when did you, like, leave the house?
[11:54] You just stay inside for a week?
[11:56] Look, a week.
[11:57] Okay, yeah.
[11:58] I'd be happy to stay inside for a week, actually.
[12:01] Yeah.
[12:02] Do anything.
[12:03] Snap lockdown.
[12:04] Yeah, yeah.
[12:05] Sometimes you kind of wish for them a little bit.
[12:07] Don't say it.
[12:08] No, I don't.
[12:08] Don't say it.
[12:09] No, but, like, just three days of just not doing lunch boxes.
[12:11] No, no lunch boxes.
[12:13] Oh, and homework and dance runs and, oh, getting out of bed.
[12:16] Yeah.
[12:18] Don't wish it, but I do.
[12:19] While Darren's finding the photo, I want to say, so we're both married to… Bald men.
[12:26] Very, very bald men.
[12:28] My husband started going bald when he was like still in high school, he thinks.
[12:31] He shaved his head first time when he was 19.
[12:34] And then I'm like, you've gone too early.
[12:36] And he's like, no, I'm receding.
[12:37] I'm like, yeah, but you can still get away with it for a bit.
[12:39] So he grew it back for a couple of years and he's like, no, this looks ridiculous.
[12:42] Like when the wind blows, he's playing footy, you could see it.
[12:44] So he ended up shaving it.
[12:46] Your husband, when did he shave his head?
[12:47] Yeah.
[12:48] He was about 25, 26.
[12:50] He was young.
[12:51] Yeah, he went completely like pretty bald.
[12:54] But that was from having... Too much hair sore throat.
[12:56] Yeah, way too much hair sore throat.
[12:57] But then also he got dreadlocks put into his hair from like here all the way down and they killed all the follicles.
[13:05] Yeah, right.
[13:06] So trauma.
[13:06] It was trauma.
[13:07] Yeah.
[13:08] Speaking of trauma...
[13:09] I've spoken to...
[13:11] Oh, my God.
[13:12] You look like... A penis is what I look like.
[13:16] I know what you look like.
[13:17] But you're swollen all through here.
[13:18] Okay, so he's showing us a photo of a very swollen forehead.
[13:22] He looks like a Harkonnen.
[13:23] Has anyone watched the movie Dune?
[13:26] June, Timothee Chalamet.
[13:28] I'll just watch it just for Timothee.
[13:30] Oh, okay.
[13:31] He's actually, that was his hottest.
[13:32] Would you agree that was Timothee Chalamet's hottest was June?
[13:35] You were barking up the wrong tree there.
[13:36] I think it's... That is not my style of man.
[13:38] No, you're not really.
[13:39] No.
[13:39] I reckon like he's just so hot.
[13:41] He's cute.
[13:41] He's cute.
[13:42] What was he?
[13:42] I just think he's hot.
[13:43] I can't remember.
[13:44] No.
[13:44] Polly Wonka.
[13:45] Hot.
[13:45] He was hot in Wonka.
[13:47] He was hot in Wonka.
[13:48] Anyway, the Harkonnens, they're the bad guys, have the swollen heads like that, right?
[13:52] But they're whites.
[13:53] It's almost like Mad Men.
[13:55] It's crap.
[13:55] Mad Men.
[13:56] Okay.
[13:56] You know Mad Men?
[13:57] So the photo I showed you, the date on that was, let's see.
[14:02] This is compelling viewing, I know.
[14:04] Sorry.
[14:05] 30th of November.
[14:05] 30th of November.
[14:06] So that was the day after I got it done.
[14:08] Yeah.
[14:09] Love that for you.
[14:09] Swollen head.
[14:11] Full allergic reaction it looks like.
[14:12] This is what I looked like on the 4th of December.
[14:18] Oh, wow.
[14:19] Oh, wow.
[14:20] It's gone down.
[14:21] It's gone down straight away.
[14:22] And you can't even tell I had it done.
[14:23] No.
[14:23] So how many days later is that?
[14:25] That's five days.
[14:26] Five days later.
[14:27] And like it shouldn't be that good, that quick.
[14:31] It's like me when I got my boobs done, went and filmed a Lynx TV commercial like a week later.
[14:35] Sometimes you get lucky, right?
[14:37] Like I think it's better to plan for the worst case scenario.
[14:41] Sometimes you get lucky and like –
[14:42] I feel like if you plan for the worst and you expect the worst.
[14:45] You get a little holiday.
[14:46] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[14:47] I always expect the worst of the worst.
[14:49] And then the next day if I've had surgery, I'm like, oh, that was nothing.
[14:53] Like I had no Panadol, nothing.
[14:54] I say that to friends.
[14:54] I'm like, no, I was fine.
[14:55] I didn't need Panadol.
[14:56] And then my girlfriend will get it done and she's like…
[14:59] I am out of action for four weeks and surgeons always say that.
[15:02] Like just because you recover in a certain way.
[15:05] Doesn't mean somebody else is.
[15:06] Some people can have horrific recoveries.
[15:08] And I've actually seen it.
[15:08] I'm like, okay, wow, you're a bruiser, you're a sweller, and your body and your genes are so different to mine.
[15:14] So don't go off me.
[15:17] I feel like the ADHD in the room doesn't feel pain.
[15:19] I've got a very high pain threshold.
[15:21] I don't bruise.
[15:23] Yeah, bruise.
[15:24] But I swell.
[15:25] You're a sweller.
[15:27] Do you swell on long-haul flights?
[15:29] Not really.
[15:30] I do.
[15:31] Yeah.
[15:31] Hey, back on our husbands, they're too far gone.
[15:34] So I said to my husband, Jackie.
[15:36] But they look weird.
[15:36] And I'm like, would you ever get it done?
[15:39] And he said, no, because there's too much to cover now.
[15:43] Yeah.
[15:43] Way too much.
[15:44] He's let it go too far.
[15:45] And he's also been bald for so long.
[15:47] Yeah.
[15:48] Yeah.
[15:48] Yeah.
[15:49] He's been bald for so long.
[15:50] Yeah.
[15:50] And so Val would look weird with him.
[15:51] Yeah.
[15:51] And then whenever we go to dress-up parties and our husbands put on wigs…
[15:55] It's like ick, ick, ick.
[15:56] It's an ick.
[15:57] I like you bald.
[15:58] Yeah, they're just bald men.
[15:59] They're just bald men.
[16:01] Hot, bald men.
[16:02] Hot, bald men.
[16:03] Take that off now.
[16:04] Yeah, we are.
[16:05] We had to a Barbie party, put a blonde Ken wig on.
[16:07] I was like, take it off, take it off, take it off.
[16:09] I don't know if it's because there was like maybe it needed to be like
[16:12] The hair was weird.
[16:13] No, I think it was just like a slight, so heavy wig and cut.
[16:16] Maybe you just needed like a lace front, like something that was better.
[16:18] Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[16:19] Like wigs by vanity.
[16:20] Yes, I reckon that's what we needed.
[16:22] And then they might have looked a bit different and okay.
[16:24] But yeah, anyway.
[16:25] So a lot of people go overseas for this procedure.
[16:28] Like there's so many people that go to Turkey for it.
[16:31] And you see them on the plane on the way home.
[16:33] And you can tell they've all been because they've all got these big swollen fat heads, right?
[16:36] What is the ballpark price comparison?
[16:39] Is it the same getting it done here in Australia?
[16:42] Look, I did the maths myself and once I added like the rough estimate of what Turkey would cost plus flights plus, you know, a comm, plus the fact I'd have to stay in Turkey for like a week because you're not supposed to really be in a pressurized environment for at least a week, I think.
[17:02] I'd just rather pay the money here and it worked out roughly the same.
[17:06] Definitely not enough for me for that metric to be worthwhile.
[17:09] Yeah.
[17:10] And I guess when you're healing, you want to be at home.
[17:12] Oh, totally.
[17:13] And you want to be negative.
[17:14] I was at home alone.
[17:14] Yeah.
[17:15] I was home alone.
[17:16] Yeah, yeah.
[17:16] How good.
[17:17] So good.
[17:18] Just like, yeah.
[17:19] Like, leave me alone.
[17:20] Alone, yeah.
[17:20] Just want to watch Netflix and chill.
[17:22] Yeah.
[17:22] And like Uber Eats and have all your things delivered.
[17:25] And also just, I think, after killer, having your doctor and then, God forbid, something goes wrong.
[17:30] Your hospital, your GP's around.
[17:32] Your whole team.
[17:33] Your team's around.
[17:34] Your husband, your family.
[17:35] Yeah.
[17:35] And the Australian medical system.
[17:36] Australian medical system.
[17:38] Yeah.
[17:38] Yeah, you didn't lose a kidney.
[17:39] Yeah.
[17:40] You've all heard these stories, right?
[17:43] Yeah.
[17:43] Yeah.
[17:44] Yeah.
[17:44] We're lucky that we've got such a good system here and such highly trained specialists.
[17:50] Sometimes going overseas, yeah, when you add it all up, it's not that different.
[17:54] No, we only go overseas to get stuff done that we can't get done here.
[17:57] Yeah.
[17:58] Oh, show me what those things are.
[18:00] Go to Korea, babe.
[18:01] There is so, there's a list.
[18:03] You make me a list.
[18:04] Yeah, yeah.
[18:04] Oh, I've got a list.
[18:06] All right.
[18:07] Well, that was awesome.
[18:08] Yeah, thanks for coming back in and talking to us about hair transplants, Darren Palmer.
[18:14] We love having you on Vanish.
[18:16] We can't wait for now.
[18:18] What else are we going to talk about next time?
[18:20] Go get something else done and then come back and tell us more content.
[18:24] You can be like the guinea pig for all the males in Australia.
[18:27] Have you seen the movie Brazil?
[18:29] No.
[18:30] No.
[18:31] Oh, look it up.
[18:31] Okay.
[18:32] It's so great.
[18:33] There's like two women and they're friends and one sort of does cosmetics in this direction and one does it in this direction.
[18:39] That's us at the moment.
[18:40] One ends up as a black pool of goop and the other one ends up as an 18-year-old.
[18:43] Stop.
[18:45] So good.
[18:45] I'm just like doing all the things that don't have the finances.
[18:48] I'm doing more in the substance right now.
[18:50] Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[18:53] No, you're not.
[18:55] You're better.
[18:56] You're better.
[18:57] Give me the substance.
[18:58] I feel like no – I reckon that's all like we saw in real life when we were at – We did see her in real life.
[19:05] Yeah, and then like there's now photos of her coming out and it's a bit warped.
[19:09] It's a bit like, I don't know, things have just gone a bit – Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[19:12] A bit overdone.
[19:13] We're not overdone yet.
[19:15] Yet.
[19:15] Yet.
[19:16] As Meghan Markle said, yet.
[19:19] Yes.
[19:19] Thanks.
[19:21] Bye for now.
[19:22] Bye.
[19:29] You're nice.
