## Transcript

[0:00] Strange thing about sleep is that every single night we
[0:02] willingly enter into a state where we lose total control.
[0:06] We lock our doors, we turn off the lights, we lay our heads
[0:08] down, and within minutes our bodies become completely
[0:11] defenseless. We can't see what's around us,
[0:14] we can't react the way we normally would.
[0:16] Our thoughts drift, Our awareness fades, and for most
[0:19] people, sleeping feels ordinary because we wake up the next
[0:22] morning assuming that nothing happened at all.
[0:24] But throughout the history of the Church, there have been
[0:26] Saints who believed the night was far more spiritually
[0:29] significant than most people realize.
[0:31] And one of those Saints was Padre Pio.
[0:34] Padre Pio spent much of his life speaking about spiritual warfare
[0:37] in ways that unsettled people around him.
[0:39] Because he didn't talk about demons, angels, temptation, or
[0:42] the soul as distant theological concepts.
[0:45] To him, these realities were immediate, personal, and
[0:48] constant. People around him testified that
[0:50] he could perceive things that others couldn't see.
[0:52] He spoke directly about conversations with his guardian
[0:55] Angel from childhood, about demonic attacks, about souls in
[0:58] purgatory, and about angels carrying prayers across
[1:01] impossible distances. And whether people believed him
[1:04] or not, one thing became impossible to ignore.
[1:06] There were way too many stories and too many witnesses and too
[1:10] many moments where he seemed to know things that he shouldn't
[1:12] have otherwise known. But one of the most unsettling
[1:15] things connected to Padre Pio was what he said happens while
[1:18] people are asleep. Because according to those close
[1:20] to him, Padre Pio believed the soul doesn't simply shut off at
[1:24] night. He believed sleep was one of
[1:25] those moments where a person becomes spiritually vulnerable
[1:28] in a way that we rarely think about during the day.
[1:31] There's a story told by those who knew him that one night
[1:33] during prayer, Padre Pio was shown something that most people
[1:36] never see. He saw a man sleeping peacefully
[1:39] in his bed. Nothing about the room looked
[1:41] unusual. The man's breathing was calm,
[1:44] the house was quiet, and from the outside it looked like an
[1:47] ordinary night, just like any other.
[1:49] But standing beside the bed was the man's guardian Angel, and
[1:52] Padre Pio describes the Angel as radiant, beyond anything
[1:56] earthly. Not soft or decorative, the way
[1:59] that religious art sometimes portrays angels, but powerful,
[2:03] watchful, completely fixed on the soul entrusted to him.
[2:07] The Angel stood beside the sleeping man with his attention
[2:10] directed toward heaven in constant prayer, almost as
[2:13] though he was interceding every second that the man remained
[2:16] asleep. Then Padre Pio saw something
[2:18] else. Dark figures surrounded the
[2:20] room. They didn't rush forward
[2:22] violently. They lingered near the edges of
[2:24] the light surrounding the Angel, almost testing it, waiting for
[2:28] weakness, looking for an opening into the man's soul through
[2:32] temptation, fear, impurity, despair, or even corruption.
[2:36] And according to the account, the sleeping man had absolutely
[2:39] no awareness of what was happening around him.
[2:42] But the Angel did, and the Angel never stopped watching.
[2:45] What disturbed Padre Pio wasn't simply the presence of evil,
[2:48] because throughout his life he had already experienced enough
[2:50] demonic attacks to understand that evil exists and it's real
[2:53] and present in our day-to-day. But instead, what disturbed him
[2:56] was how unaware most people were of the spiritual condition of
[3:00] their soul while they slept. Because in this vision, the
[3:03] demons couldn't touch the man. Every time they approached, the
[3:06] presence of the guardian Angel held them back.
[3:09] Padre Pio described the Angel almost like a wall of prayer,
[3:12] standing between the soul and the darkness surrounding it.
[3:14] There was no panic, there was no chaos.
[3:17] The Angel didn't even appear afraid or overwhelmed.
[3:19] He remained steady because the soul he guarded was living in
[3:23] friendship with God. And then the vision changed.
[3:26] Padre Pio suddenly saw another room, another man asleep in
[3:30] another bed. But this time, everything felt
[3:32] different from the moment that he looked at the guardian Angel
[3:34] standing beside him. The Angel was still there, but
[3:37] the light surrounding him was a little more dim.
[3:40] His posture carried sorrow instead of strength.
[3:43] And while he remains beside the soul entrusted to him, Padre Pio
[3:46] said that the darkness in this room moved much more freely.
[3:50] The figures no longer lingered at a distance.
[3:52] They came close to the sleeper, whispering into him while he
[3:55] rested, almost planting thoughts into the silence of the night.
[3:59] And what horrified Padre Pio was that the Angel didn't stop them
[4:02] the same way that he had before. Later, those close to Padre Pio
[4:05] explained that he believes the condition of the soul during the
[4:08] day affected the soul during the night.
[4:11] A person who spends their waking hours rejecting grace, feeding
[4:14] habitual sin, ignoring their conscience, and drowning
[4:17] themselves in impurity, resentment, pride, lust, or
[4:21] hatred weakens themselves spiritually.
[4:23] The guardian Angel never abandons the soul because that's
[4:27] not his mission, but the soul itself becomes way more
[4:30] vulnerable to darkness through its own choices.
[4:33] And this was the part that deeply affected Padre Pio,
[4:35] because he said that the Angel remains even when the soul
[4:38] continues rejecting God. The Angel remains when the
[4:41] person sins. He remains when the person
[4:43] ignores every single warning. He even remains when the person
[4:46] stops praying. The Angel doesn't walk away.
[4:49] He stays beside the soul entrusted to him all the way
[4:52] until death. But Padre Pio said that there's
[4:55] sorrow in that. Imagine standing beside someone
[4:58] every single day of their life, trying constantly to guide them
[5:01] away from destruction while watching them repeatedly move
[5:04] closer to it by their own free will.
[5:06] According to Padre Pio, this was one of the greatest griefs
[5:08] experienced by guardian angels. It wasn't hatred towards the
[5:12] person or grief. But after seeing these visions,
[5:14] Padre Pio began urging people to take what they do before sleep
[5:19] and during the day seriously because most people prepare
[5:22] their bodies for bed while never once thinking about the
[5:25] condition of their soul. The Catholic Church is always
[5:28] taught that every single person is given a guardian Angel by
[5:30] God. And when most people think about
[5:32] guardian angels, they picture something soft and harmless,
[5:35] almost like a comforting childhood image.
[5:38] But the Saints spoke about guardian angels with far more
[5:40] seriousness than that. They believed these guardian
[5:43] angels were active participants in the spiritual life of the
[5:45] person entrusted to them. That's why Padre Pio became so
[5:49] intense about what people consumed spiritually before bed.
[5:52] Because According to him, sleep doesn't erase the condition of
[5:55] your soul. You carry your interior life
[5:57] with you into the night. A person who spends the day
[6:00] drowning themselves in imperial or constant rage and gossip,
[6:03] whatever it may be, that sin doesn't suddenly become
[6:06] spiritually peaceful just because their eyes close.
[6:09] The body falls asleep, but the soul carries the weight of
[6:11] everything it has welcomed throughout the day.
[6:13] And this is where Padre Pio's words become very uncomfortable.
[6:16] He believed many people were unknowingly opening doors
[6:19] spiritually through the things that they normalized.
[6:22] And it wasn't necessarily through possession or
[6:24] extraordinary demonic activity the way that sometimes we
[6:27] envision, but instead through repeated cooperation with sin
[6:31] that slowly weakened a person interiorly over time.
[6:34] Most temptation begins subtly, a thought, a resentment, an image
[6:38] or a memory, something like that, a corruption that grows
[6:41] quietly until the person begins believing, leaving it originated
[6:44] completely from themselves. And according to Padre Pio, This
[6:48] is why prayer before sleep matters so much, because the
[6:51] Saints understood that the soul should never enter into sleep
[6:54] carelessly. There is a reason the Catholics
[6:56] for centuries prayed nighttime prayers before bed.
[6:59] There's a reason that parents teach their children to pray to
[7:01] their guardian Angel before sleeping.
[7:03] There's a reason that examination of conscience became
[7:06] such an important spiritual practice in the church, because
[7:09] the condition of the soul matters, and it matters at night
[7:12] as well. Padre Pio Once encourage people
[7:14] to pray directly to their guardian Angel before sleep and
[7:17] entrust themselves to their protection throughout the night.
[7:20] And one of the most famous prayers in the Catholic Church
[7:22] came from this exact belief. Angel of God, my guardian dear,
[7:25] to whom God's love commits me here ever this night be at my
[7:29] side to light and guard, to rule and guide.
[7:32] For most people, including myself, this prayer has become a
[7:35] routine, something memorized as children and forgotten about as
[7:38] adults. But Padre Pio didn't believe
[7:40] that those words were childish at all.
[7:42] He believed they reflected a real spiritual reality that was
[7:45] unfolding every single night around souls who never even
[7:49] realized that they're being protected.
[7:51] One of the strangest things that Padre Pio reportedly said about
[7:53] guardian angels was that they recognize souls by what they
[7:56] call their spiritual fragrance. And when people first hear that,
[7:59] it sounds like a perfume, and it sounds fake, to be honest.
[8:04] But those close to him said that Padre Pio spoke about it like it
[8:07] was a real spiritual reality. Padre Pio once told a spiritual
[8:11] daughter that if she couldn't come him personally, then she
[8:13] should send her guardian Angel instead, and that he would
[8:16] recognize the Angel by the fragrance of her soul.
[8:18] So think about being that girl. That's a little bizarre, but
[8:22] according to Padre Pio, the soul reflects the condition of the
[8:25] life being lived. A soul living close to God
[8:27] carries peace differently. A soul striving toward holiness
[8:31] carries something different spiritually than a soul consumed
[8:34] by bitterness and impurity or cruelty, pride or unrepentant
[8:38] sin. And he believes that angels
[8:40] perceived that immediately. This is why Padre Pio was so
[8:43] serious about repentance before sleep, because he believes that
[8:46] people often carry spiritual residue into the night without
[8:50] thinking about it. They spend the day feeding their
[8:52] anger or their lust or jealousy or whatever it may be, and then
[8:55] collapse into bed without ever examining themselves interiorly.
[8:59] No prayer, no repentance, no reflection, and no
[9:01] acknowledgement of God at all. And according to the Saints, the
[9:05] soul doesn't remain untouched by that.
[9:06] Padre Pio believed that a soul in a state of grace created an
[9:09] atmosphere where the guardian Angel could work freely, while a
[9:12] soul buried in habitual sin created spiritual confusion
[9:16] around itself. The Angel was still present,
[9:18] still loving, and still interceding, but the soul itself
[9:20] became harder to guide because it stopped cooperating with
[9:23] grace. This is why the Saints
[9:25] constantly connected nighttime prayer with examination of
[9:28] conscience. And it wasn't because they were
[9:31] scrupulous or paranoid, although I'm sure some some of them were.
[9:34] But it's really because they understood how quickly sin
[9:37] becomes normalized when a person stops confronting it.
[9:40] Honestly, before sleep, many Saints would mentally walk
[9:43] through their entire day. Where was I selfish?
[9:45] Where did I fail? Where did I ignore God?
[9:48] Where did I wound someone? Where did I refuse charity?
[9:51] And then they would place all of it before God before closing
[9:54] their your eyes. Padre Pio believed something
[9:56] that most of us rarely think about anymore.
[9:58] He believed that sleep resembles death in a profound, spiritual
[10:02] way. The body becomes still,
[10:04] awareness fades, control disappears, and the soul stands
[10:08] exposed before God in a state of dependence.
[10:11] And he believed The way that a person spiritually prepares
[10:14] themselves for sleep reflects the way that they're preparing
[10:16] themselves for eternity itself. Padre Pio said that if people
[10:20] truly understood what their sins did to their guardian angels,
[10:24] they would weep. Because your guardian Angel,
[10:25] according to Catholic teaching, has accompanied you from the
[10:28] moment that your life began, through every single sin, every
[10:32] close call, every prayer, every moment of despair, every act of
[10:36] selfishness, every near disaster, and every moment you
[10:40] gave up, your guardian Angel remained beside you.
[10:43] And Padre Pio believed most people go their entire lives
[10:46] barely acknowledging that reality.
[10:48] He believed people were often way more attentive to protecting
[10:51] their homes than protecting their souls.
[10:54] They locked doors, install alarms, they check cameras, But
[10:57] spiritually they leave themselves exhausted,
[11:00] distracted, consumed by noise, flooded with impurity, and then
[11:04] completely disconnected from prayer.
[11:06] Then they wonder why they feel restless, why they wake up
[11:09] anxious, why temptation feels heavier, and maybe even why
[11:12] peace feels so distant. The Saints understood something
[11:15] that us modern people forget. Human beings are not merely
[11:19] physical creatures having occasional spiritual
[11:21] experiences. We're spiritual beings living
[11:24] inside physical bodies, which means the condition of the soul
[11:27] effects everything. And according to Padre Pio,
[11:30] nighttime was one of the clearest reminders of that
[11:32] truth. Because sleep strips away
[11:34] illusion. The distractions stop, the
[11:37] performance stops, the noise stops, and you're no longer
[11:41] scrolling, talking, working, entertaining yourself, or
[11:44] drowning yourself in constant stimulation.
[11:46] Eventually, every person reaches the same moment when they close
[11:50] their eyes and surrender control, and Padre Pio believes
[11:52] that in those quiet hours, guardian angels continue to do
[11:56] what they've always done. Intercede, protect, guide, and
[12:00] pray for the soul entrusted to them.
[12:02] There are stories from people close to Padre Pio who claims
[12:04] that he would sometimes suddenly pause during conversation or
[12:07] prayer because he was watching someone's guardian Angel arrive
[12:10] with a message. Others claims that he could
[12:12] sense the condition of a person's soul before they even
[12:15] spoke to him. Whether every story is perfectly
[12:17] accurate or not, one thing remains constant.
[12:19] Throughout his life, Padre Pio spoke about guardian angels as
[12:23] though they were profoundly involved in the ordinary lives
[12:26] of people every single day. And maybe that's the part that
[12:29] we struggle with today, not necessarily the existence of
[12:31] evil, because most of us believe that evil exists.
[12:34] The harder thing to believe is that God loves human beings
[12:37] enough to assign heavenly beings to guard us constantly, even
[12:41] when we're asleep, even when we fail, even when we wander far
[12:44] from Him. Because according to Padre Pio,
[12:46] your guardian Angel doesn't stop standing watch when you fall
[12:49] asleep tonight. He remains beside you.
[12:52] And maybe the saddest part of all of this is that most of us
[12:55] will go to sleep tonight without ever once acknowledging our
[12:57] Angel standing beside us. We will check our phone one last
[13:00] time, scroll until we're exhausted, fall asleep
[13:03] distracted, make sure we set our alarm, fall asleep carrying
[13:06] anxiety or impurity, resentment or noise into the silence of the
[13:10] night without ever placing ourselves before God even for a
[13:14] moment. And according to Padre Pio,
[13:16] people have no idea how much our guardian Angel desires our
[13:19] cooperation because our Angel assigned to us isn't indifferent
[13:23] towards us. Your guardian Angel has watched
[13:25] your entire life unfold. He has seen the prayers that you
[13:28] whispered when nobody else knew that you were struggling.
[13:31] He's seen the moments that you almost broke completely.
[13:34] He's seen every temptation, every fall, every confession,
[13:38] every act of repentance, every time you tried again and again
[13:42] after failing for the 100th time.
[13:44] He stood beside you during moments that you don't even
[13:47] remember surviving. And according to the Saints, he
[13:50] will remain there until the moment that you die.
[13:52] That's why Padre Pio begged people to pray before sleep.
[13:55] He believes the soul should never casually drift into
[13:58] unconsciousness without first entrusting itself to God.
[14:01] So before you fall asleep tonight, stop for a moment.
[14:03] Examine your conscience honestly.
[14:05] Ask for forgiveness in ways that you failed today.
[14:08] Pray for protection, thank God for another day of life.
[14:11] And speak to your guardian Angel, even if it feels weird or
[14:15] strange at first. Even if you haven't done it
[14:17] since your childhood. Because according to Saint Padre
[14:20] Pio, your guardian Angel has spent your entire life
[14:23] protecting you while asking for almost nothing in return except
[14:26] your cooperation with Grace. And maybe that changes the way
[14:29] that you think about sleep entirely.
[14:31] Because from the moment that you close your eyes tonight until
[14:34] the moment that you wake up tomorrow morning, you are not
[14:36] alone in the darkness. Your guardian Angel is still
[14:39] standing watch. That is all I have for today.
[14:41] Thank you guys so much for listening and I will see you
[14:44] guys next time. Bye.
