[0:00] Hi everyone. Welcome back to English Snacks,
[0:03] the podcast where we serve up bite -sized English
[0:07] one delicious phrase at a time. I'm your host,
[0:11] Amber. This morning, I was walking past the fields
[0:16] near my house and the wheat was gone. Harvested.
[0:21] A few weeks ago, it was tall and golden. Now,
[0:26] it's just flat. Open fields. And it got me thinking
[0:32] like a business person, actually. It's July,
[0:37] the halfway point of the year. Basically, end
[0:41] of Q2. So, what have I actually delivered so
[0:47] far this year? What's still in progress? Let's
[0:53] get into some sharp modern vocabulary. for talking
[0:58] about goals, achievement and progress. The kind
[1:03] you genuinely use in a performance review or
[1:08] a catch -up with a colleague. In English, we
[1:13] use harvest language constantly for results and
[1:18] outcomes, even in business. To reap what you
[1:24] sow. Meaning... The effort you invest determines
[1:29] your results. Try shadowing this. She put in
[1:35] the work all year and now she's reaping what
[1:39] she sowed. Promoted to team leader. To reap the
[1:51] rewards. Very common in a professional context.
[1:56] Shadow this one. After months of cold outreach,
[2:03] he's finally reaping the rewards. Three new clients
[2:07] this quarter. To enjoy the fruits of your labour.
[2:20] Meaning enjoying the results of sustained hard
[2:24] work. Give this a try. After two years building
[2:30] the company, she's finally enjoying the fruits
[2:34] of her labour. Now, the goals that aren't finished
[2:45] yet. This is where business English really overlaps
[2:50] with farming vocabulary. To cultivate. To actively
[2:57] develop something over time with care. This is
[3:02] very natural with skills or relationships. Shadow
[3:08] this. I've been cultivating relationships with
[3:13] investors all year. To lay the groundwork. This
[3:23] is the unglamorous preparation before visible
[3:27] progress. Try this one. We spent Q1 laying the
[3:33] groundwork before the product even launched.
[3:41] To come to fruition. When a plan finally succeeds
[3:46] and becomes real. Shadow this. After 18 months,
[3:53] the merger is finally coming to fruition. To
[4:03] gain traction. This one's pure business. When
[4:07] an idea or project starts gaining real momentum
[4:12] and results. Shadow this. The new pricing model
[4:18] only gained traction after the third pitch. A
[4:28] work in progress. There's no shame in this one.
[4:32] It's simple and honest. And a gentle one. A fallow
[4:40] period. This is a season when nothing visible
[4:44] is growing. When we see a fallow field, nothing
[4:49] has been planted, but rest and recovery are happening.
[4:55] Shadow this. I had a fallow quarter after the
[5:00] burnout. No big wins, just rebuilding. So here's
[5:11] the part that really hit me. With the wheat gone,
[5:15] I could suddenly see so far in every direction.
[5:21] The church in the next village, the hills in
[5:26] the distance, the road curving away. Earlier,
[5:31] the wheat had blocked all of that. There's great
[5:35] language here for talking about strategy and
[5:39] direction. First, An unobstructed view. Nothing
[5:47] blocking your sight, either literally or in your
[5:51] plans. Shadow this one. For the first time, I
[5:57] had an unobstructed view of the whole roadmap.
[6:06] To gain clarity, this is very modern and common.
[6:11] Try this. I finally gained some clarity on our
[6:16] strategy. A clear -eyed view of where you're
[6:24] headed. This means you're being realistic, not
[6:28] fooling yourself. Shadow this one. She's got
[6:33] a clear -eyed view of where the business is headed
[6:37] next year. On the horizon. This is talking about
[6:47] future possibilities. Shadow this. There's a
[6:52] big product launch on the horizon. Stripped back.
[7:01] Meaning it's reduced to only what's essential.
[7:06] Nothing extra. Try this. We've stripped back
[7:11] our goals to three KPIs that actually matter.
[7:20] And finally, taking stock. This means pausing
[7:26] to honestly assess where you are, exactly like
[7:31] a farmer does after harvest. Shadow this. It's
[7:37] a great time of year to take stock of your milestones.
[7:46] So my question for you and for me, what have
[7:51] you harvested this year? What's still a work
[7:55] in progress? Maybe you're enjoying the fruits
[8:00] of your labour right now. Maybe you're in a fallow
[8:04] period. quietly laying the groundwork for something
[8:09] that hasn't come to fruition yet. Either way,
[8:13] take stock, get a clear -eyed view and look at
[8:19] what's on the horizon. That's all for today's
[8:24] snack. I hope you enjoyed it. The worksheet is
[8:28] linked in the show notes if you want to practice
[8:30] in more detail. I'm looking forward to sharing
[8:35] more with you soon. So as always, come hungry
[8:39] for knowledge.
