Ruja Ignatova, known as the "Cryptoqueen," built a multi-billion-dollar empire with her OneCoin scheme before disappearing without a trace in 2017. With global law enforcement on her trail, she became one of the most wanted fugitives in the world. Mark Garvey's story is less famous but equally haunting. In 1987 he vanished without a trace and his family is still looking. [0:30] It was a crisp October evening in 2017 when Doctor Ruha
[0:34] Ignatova stepped off a flight from Sofia, Bulgaria to Athens
[0:38] and vanished without a trace. Until that moment, Ignatova was
[0:43] riding high as the glamorous self styled crypto queen.
[0:47] She was the founder of a cryptocurrency empire called One
[0:50] Coin that had attracted millions of investors worldwide.
[0:55] She lived a life of luxury and audacity, hosting flashy events,
[1:00] touting her PhD title and promising financial revolution.
[1:05] But in the blink of an eye, she disappeared into thin air.
[1:09] What followed was an international manhunt and a
[1:12] mystery that continues to this day.
[1:17] Ruha Ignatova was a Bulgarian born German educated
[1:20] businesswoman who became infamous as the face of One
[1:23] Coin, a fraudulent cryptocurrency scheme she Co
[1:27] founded in 2014. Highly intelligent and
[1:30] charismatic, she held APHD in law and even worked at a
[1:34] respected consulting firm which lent her credibility.
[1:39] By her mid 30s, Ignatova styled herself as a visionary fintech
[1:43] entrepreneur. She often wore expensive
[1:46] designer dresses and bold red lipstick, exuding confidence as
[1:50] her followers proclaimed her the queen of a financial revolution.
[1:55] Under her leadership, One Coin grew into a multibillion dollar
[1:59] operation in just a few years, with a global network of
[2:02] investors entranced by her slick presentations and lofty
[2:06] promises. Ruha's rise to notoriety didn't
[2:11] come from nowhere. She was born in 1980 in Bulgaria
[2:15] and moved to Germany as a child, excelling in school and later
[2:19] obtaining a doctorate in international law.
[2:23] Despite A seemingly respectable start, including a stint at
[2:27] McKinsey and Company, she showed early signs of deception.
[2:32] In 2012, Ignatova was convicted in Germany of fraud for
[2:36] orchestrating A dubious corporate bankruptcy scheme and
[2:40] given a suspended 14 month prison sentence.
[2:44] By 2013 she was already involved in another sketchy crypto
[2:49] venture called Big Coin, a multi level marketing scheme that
[2:53] ultimately collapsed. These experiences paved the way
[2:57] for One Coin, which Ignatova launched in 2014 with grand
[3:02] ambitions and an appetite for fraud on a far larger scale.
[3:09] Also, just as a quick aside, had she simply bought and held
[3:12] Bitcoin back in 2013, she'd be a billionaire today instead of on
[3:17] the FB is Most wanted list, but I digress.
[3:22] Once One Coin was underway, Ignatova's personal brand
[3:26] soared. She embraced public appearances
[3:29] draped in luxury and spoke with polished confidence about how
[3:33] her cryptocurrency would change the world.
[3:36] Attendees of One Coin events recall the electric atmosphere
[3:39] she created. Few suspected that behind the
[3:42] scenes, she and her Co founders derisively referred to One Coin
[3:47] as what I'll euphemistically call a poop coin and knew it was
[3:52] all a sham. Behind the dazzling conferences
[3:58] and confident proclamations, One Coin wasn't what it seemed.
[4:02] Ignatova's company marketed itself as a cryptocurrency
[4:05] similar to Bitcoin, but in reality, One Coin had no actual
[4:10] blockchain. This means the coins and their
[4:13] supposed ever increasing value were entirely fictitious.
[4:17] The business model was essentially a classic pyramid
[4:20] scheme. Investors bought educational
[4:23] packages and One Coin tokens and earned commissions by recruiting
[4:27] members. Between 2014 and 2016 alone,
[4:32] over 3 million people invested in these cryptocurrency
[4:36] packages, generating more than 5 billion in revenue for One Coin.
[4:41] Victims around the world emptied their life savings based on
[4:44] promises of huge returns. In truth, the value of one coin
[4:49] was simply made-up by the founders and displayed on a fake
[4:53] internal exchange. There was no open market or
[4:56] transparent Ledger backing it. While early investors saw their
[5:02] account balances soar on paper, they ultimately found they
[5:05] couldn't cash out in any meaningful way due to so-called
[5:09] lock in periods. By 2016, financial regulators
[5:14] and journalists worldwide had started questioning one coin's
[5:18] legitimacy. Authorities in several countries
[5:21] issued warnings, and cracks began to appear in the company's
[5:24] facade. Nonetheless, Ignatova continued
[5:28] to expand her empire, opening offices and staging recruitment
[5:32] rallies from Europe to Asia. By late 2017, the walls were
[5:39] closing in on Ignatova. Unbeknownst to the One Coin
[5:43] founder, US investigators had flipped one of her insiders, her
[5:47] American boyfriend Gilbert Armenta, into an informant.
[5:52] In fact, on October 12th, 2017, Ignatova was secretly indicted
[5:57] in New York on fraud and money laundering charges.
[6:01] Sensing that her time was almost up, she hatched A dramatic
[6:04] escape plan. On October 25th, 2017, Ruha
[6:09] Ignatova was scheduled to speak to an audience of one coin
[6:13] investors at a conference in Lisbon, Portugal, but she never
[6:17] showed up. Instead, that day she boarded a
[6:20] Ryanair flight from Bulgaria to Greece, and upon landing in
[6:24] Athens, she disappeared without a trace.
[6:29] According to later testimony, Ignatova's personal bodyguards
[6:33] reported that when the plane landed, she was met by a pair of
[6:36] mysterious Russian men. She was whisked away before even
[6:40] entering the airport terminal. She was 37 years old when she
[6:44] disappeared and hasn't been seen since.
[6:49] What makes Ignatova's vanishing act especially intriguing is how
[6:53] thoroughly she managed to slip away in an act of extreme
[6:57] selfishness. She even left behind her young
[7:00] daughter and has had no contact with her ever since.
[7:05] In the days and weeks after October 25th, 2017, rumors
[7:11] swirled about her fate and whereabouts.
[7:14] Some said she had fled to the Middle East.
[7:17] Others whispered that she was hiding in her native Bulgaria
[7:20] under an assumed identity. For a while, One Coin continued
[7:25] operating under other leaders, including her younger brother
[7:29] Konstantin Ignatov, but the crypto queen herself was gone.
[7:36] Ignatova's disappearance prompted a worldwide effort to
[7:39] track her down. In her absence, authorities
[7:42] began dismantling the One Coin operation and bringing its
[7:46] participants to justice. Her brother, Konstantin Ignatov,
[7:51] who had taken on a public leadership role after Ruha
[7:53] vanished, was arrested in 2019 and later pleaded guilty to
[7:58] fraud and money laundering. In June 2022, the US Federal
[8:06] Bureau of Investigation added Ruha Ignatova to its 10 Most
[8:10] Wanted Fugitives list, making her only the 11th woman ever to
[8:14] appear on that notorious roster and the first to be accused of a
[8:18] multi billion dollar fraud. Investigators pursued leads
[8:23] across the globe. It emerged that after Athens,
[8:27] Ignatova might have travelled onward on a German passport,
[8:31] possibly to the United Arab Emirates, Russia or elsewhere in
[8:35] Eastern Europe. Over time, several theories have
[8:40] emerged to explain what might have become of Ruha Ignatova.
[8:45] One possibility is that she is alive and in hiding, having used
[8:49] her immense wealth and connections to buy protection.
[8:53] Ignatova was known to have cultivated relationships with
[8:56] powerful underworld figures. During her One Coin days, an
[9:00] American investigator revealed that a notorious Bulgarian crime
[9:04] boss was closely involved in One Coins operations and even
[9:08] oversaw Ignatova's personal security.
[9:13] According to this account, Ignatova paid him around
[9:16] €100,000 per month for protection, and it was his
[9:20] network that helped whisk her out of Bulgaria in 2017.
[9:25] If true, this indicates she had arranged safe passage with the
[9:29] help of organized crime allies. Supporters of the Still Alive
[9:34] theory point to evidence that Ignatova may have quietly
[9:38] continued managing her assets even while on the run.
[9:43] In early 2023, for example, an investigative journalist
[9:47] discovered property documents in London that provided A
[9:51] tantalizing clue. A luxury penthouse apartment in
[9:55] Kensington valued at over £11 million had been purchased via
[10:01] an offshore company. Due to new transparency laws,
[10:05] Ignatova's name was recently revealed as the company's
[10:08] beneficial owner. It also implies she might be
[10:11] hiding in plain sight under an alias, perhaps living in a haven
[10:16] in the Middle East or Russia beyond the reach of extradition.
[10:21] Given her language skills and enormous resources, she could
[10:25] conceivably remain underground indefinitely, especially if she
[10:29] truly has changed her physical appearance.
[10:34] Yet an equally compelling theory holds that Ruha Ignatova met a
[10:39] darker fate IN2022A bombshell investigative report from
[10:44] Bulgaria claimed that Ignatova was slain on a crime Lord's
[10:48] order not long after she vanished.
[10:52] According to a leaked Bulgarian police dossier, her body was
[10:56] chopped up and dumped from a yacht in the Ionian Sea near
[10:59] Greece. The story goes that once
[11:02] Ignatova became a liability, her bodyguards decided to eliminate
[11:06] her. Bulgarian records indicate that
[11:09] many of Ignatova's properties have since been taken over by
[11:12] people connected to this criminal.
[11:15] However, no hard proof of her passing has ever surfaced, and
[11:19] it's possible that these are steps taken to evade capture.
[11:23] Under this theory, this is all an elaborate smokescreen to
[11:26] provide cover for the fact that she's still very much alive.
[11:32] As of today, the fate of Ruha Ignatova remains one of the 21st
[11:36] century's great unsolved financial crime mysteries, and
[11:39] it continues to baffle investigators.
[11:45] It was a chilly Monday evening in early March 1987 when 15 year
[11:50] old Mark Garvey stepped out into the Liverpool night and never
[11:54] came home. Last seen waiting for a bus
[11:57] outside a local pub, Mark vanished without a trace.
[12:01] This is the story of who Mark was, what happened that fateful
[12:05] night and the theories that attempt to explain how a
[12:08] teenager could simply disappear into thin air.
[12:14] Mark Garvey was a well liked 15 year old from a loving family in
[12:18] Liverpool. He was a bright student and
[12:20] passionate Everton FC fan who dreamed of becoming a lawyer one
[12:24] day. By all accounts, he had a happy
[12:27] home life and had never given his parents any serious reason
[12:30] to worry. In 1987, Mark's future looked
[12:34] bright until everything changed on one cold night in March.
[12:40] On March 2nd, 1987, Mark left home in the evening to visit his
[12:45] girlfriend, who lived a few miles away in West Darby,
[12:48] Liverpool. He put on his best clothes and
[12:51] brought just enough money for the bus fare, promising to be
[12:54] back by around 9:00 PM so he wouldn't miss his younger
[12:58] brother's birthday the next day. According to his family, Mark
[13:02] was in good spirits as he headed out, and nothing seemed to miss.
[13:07] When 9:30 PM came and went with no sign of Mark, his mother,
[13:12] Dorothy, grew concerned. At first, she thought he might
[13:15] have lost track of time helping out at his girlfriend's house,
[13:19] something he occasionally did. But by midnight, she could wait
[13:23] no longer. Dorothy drove to the
[13:26] girlfriend's home, only to learn that Mark had left around 9:30
[13:30] PM to catch his usual bus home. That bus route ran by the Jolly
[13:34] Roger Pub on Queens Drive, about a 30 minute ride, which meant
[13:39] Mark should have been home by 10:00 at the latest.
[13:44] Multiple witnesses later reported seeing Mark waiting at
[13:47] this bus stop on the night of March 2nd, 1987.
[13:51] However, no one remembers seeing him actually board a bus and
[13:55] after that sighting outside the pub, Mark simply disappeared.
[14:00] That brief glimpse of him by the Jolly Roger was the last
[14:03] confirmed trace of Mark Garvey. As dawn broke on March 3rd,
[14:09] 1987, with Mark still missing, his worried family contacted the
[14:14] police and an investigation began.
[14:17] It soon emerged that Mark and his girlfriend had argued that
[14:21] night. He had reportedly found her in
[14:24] the company of one of his best friends, and he left her house
[14:27] in tears. This emotional confrontation LED
[14:31] some to wonder if Mark had run off or done something rash and
[14:35] despair, but his family doubted it.
[14:39] He had never shown signs of depression, had plans for the
[14:42] very next day, and was generally a responsible, upbeat teen.
[14:49] Police launched an extensive search for Mark in the first few
[14:53] months. Officers interviewed all of
[14:55] Mark's friends and classmates at De La Salle School and combed
[14:59] through the surrounding areas for any clues.
[15:02] They even brought tracker dogs to search nearby parks like
[15:05] Walton Park, and an appeal for information was announced over
[15:09] the loud speakers at Everton Soccer Stadium.
[15:12] Despite these efforts, no trace of Mark was found, not a single
[15:16] piece of clothing, bag or other evidence turned up, and no
[15:20] witnesses beyond those at the bus stop could provide any
[15:22] useful information. By the summer of 1987, with no
[15:29] leads to go on, the active investigation wound down.
[15:33] Mark's disappearance case turned cold, leaving his family in a
[15:37] painful state of limbo. Over the years, authorities
[15:42] would occasionally revisit the case or check new tips, but
[15:45] nothing definitive ever surfaced.
[15:48] To this day, Mark Garvey remains officially missing, and the
[15:52] question of what happened to him lingers unanswered.
[15:58] In the absence of answers, numerous theories have been
[16:01] proposed to explain how Mark could have disappeared that
[16:04] night. One theory is that Mark, upset
[16:08] from the argument, might have impulsively run away to start a
[16:11] new life. However, his family finds this
[16:16] unlikely, as Mark left behind all his savings and possessions,
[16:20] and he had never talked about wanting to leave home.
[16:23] If he did run off, surviving undetected as a teenager with no
[16:27] preparation would have been extremely difficult.
[16:31] Further, this idea clearly became less likely as time went
[16:35] on without any sign whatsoever of Mark.
[16:40] Another theory, considered early on, was that Mark, in a moment
[16:43] of despair, might have come to harm near the River Mersey or
[16:47] elsewhere. Perhaps he wandered off route
[16:50] and fell into the river or encountered an accident.
[16:53] Some have suggested that this may have been done
[16:56] intentionally, given what happened with his girlfriend.
[17:00] Yet extensive searches never found a body or any evidence
[17:03] whatsoever of a tragedy. Moreover, Mark's family insists
[17:08] he would have never done an act like this intentionally, though
[17:11] of course people are prone to do rash things they can't take
[17:14] back. Some suspect that Mark May have
[17:18] been the victim of foul play. In this scenario, a stranger or
[17:24] someone he knew could have approached him after he left the
[17:27] bus stop. There were no reports of
[17:29] disturbances that night, but the complete lack of clues leaves
[17:34] open the possibility that someone abducted him and managed
[17:37] to hide all evidence. In the alternative, it's also
[17:41] been suggested that he may have been picked up by someone he
[17:43] thought he knew and trusted, only to have that person turn on
[17:47] him. Notably, police have not
[17:50] identified any likely suspect or motive over the years and
[17:54] haven't even confirmed with certainty that a crime occurred.
[17:59] For Mark's family, the decades since 1987 have been an
[18:03] agonizing stretch of uncertainty.
[18:06] His mother, Dorothy, never stopped looking for him.
[18:09] She would often visit the area around the bus stop, watching
[18:13] passing buses with the hope of seeing her son step off one day.
[18:18] Dorothy always held on to a sliver of hope that Mark might
[18:21] return, but she passed away in January 2025 at the age of 83
[18:27] without ever learning what happened to her boy.
[18:30] Mark's father, Dennis, had also passed away a few years earlier
[18:34] in 2019, being denied that closure he desperately needed.
[18:42] Mark's younger sister Rose was born two years after he went
[18:45] missing, but she grew up determined to find her brother.
[18:49] On their father's deathbed, Rose promised she would never stop
[18:53] looking for her missing brother, a vow she has kept ever since.
[18:58] To this day, Mark's siblings continue to keep his story alive
[19:03] in the hopes that one day they will bring justice for Mark, or
[19:07] at least a sense of closure to his case.
