[0:05] Speaker 1: Apoche production.
[0:11] Speaker 2: On a sunny Saturday at the football in Adelaide in
[0:14] Speaker 2: nineteen seventy three, and.
[0:16] Speaker 3: The rover will put it forward from Santa Wing towards
[0:18] Speaker 3: Santa harf Ford Hobby in the front.
[0:19] Speaker 4: One couldn't pull it down. Knocked on intelligently by furl Formark.
[0:23] Speaker 2: Eleven year old Joanne Ratcliffe took her four year old
[0:25] Speaker 2: friend Kirsty Gordon to the toilet. They were never seen again.
[0:37] Speaker 2: Fifty three years later, joe ane sister Susie is still
[0:41] Speaker 2: searching well.
[0:42] Speaker 5: Of all the baffling crimes that have been committed in
[0:44] Speaker 5: this city, few are more heartbreaking than the disappearance of
[0:47] Speaker 5: Kirsty Gordon and Johann.
[0:49] Speaker 6: Ratcliffe, but not having I bought it to bury and
[0:53] Speaker 6: to actually grieve for her properly.
[1:02] Speaker 2: There are theories that.
[1:03] Speaker 5: We're seen of a man wearing a check coat and
[1:07] Speaker 5: a brimmed hat leading them from the ground, never to
[1:11] Speaker 5: be seen again.
[1:12] Speaker 7: It was a crime that one would think was a
[1:18] Speaker 7: part of child abuse type of thing, you know.
[1:22] Speaker 2: So do you think there could be a link between
[1:24] Speaker 2: what pedophelia and the battle? Absolutely, absolutely no doubt about
[1:27] Speaker 2: their suspects.
[1:29] Speaker 7: He should probably be in a mental institution to tell
[1:32] Speaker 7: you the truth rather than imprison.
[1:34] Speaker 8: The gentleman that was dressed in women's clothing was sort
[1:38] Speaker 8: of loitering around where the ladies toilets were rumors.
[1:44] Speaker 7: It's childhood and how do you access that while you're
[1:46] Speaker 7: in prisons. And he was put on that property by government.
[1:50] Speaker 7: He was sent out to there to get him away
[1:53] Speaker 7: from Adelaide because he was molesting.
[1:55] Speaker 2: To many children and possible cover ups.
[1:58] Speaker 7: If you've got a pedophile ring that's catering for the
[2:04] Speaker 7: high high end of society, you'd probably want to protect
[2:08] Speaker 7: that set of.
[2:09] Speaker 2: Boring what happened to joe Anne and Kirsty.
[2:14] Speaker 6: Now, just appeal to those outd you that may have
[2:17] Speaker 6: those answers, please find it within your heart during Crime
[2:23] Speaker 6: Stoppers put an end to our pain, Thank.
[2:28] Speaker 7: You, says.
[2:40] Speaker 2: Episode four The Barrels. In the last episode, we met
[2:45] Speaker 2: Xpikey and now private investigator Robert Cameron, or as he's
[2:50] Speaker 2: more affectionately.
[2:51] Speaker 7: Known, I'm Bear or Robert Cameron.
[2:54] Speaker 2: He's a big bloke with an even bigger heart, and
[2:56] Speaker 2: he's not in the search for joe Anne and Kirsty
[2:58] Speaker 2: for the million dollar award. He actually wants to help
[3:01] Speaker 2: Susie and anyone affected by this terrible tragedy. We also
[3:06] Speaker 2: heard about Mark Marshall, who's confessed to knowing about what
[3:09] Speaker 2: happened to Joanne and Kirsty. You can hear that in
[3:13] Speaker 2: previous episodes. In Bear's mind, Mark Marshall should probably be
[3:20] Speaker 2: in a psychiatric unit, not in jail, as he thinks
[3:24] Speaker 2: there's some deep psychological issues that won't be helped by
[3:28] Speaker 2: jail time. It's been shown through his years of prison time.
[3:32] Speaker 2: Mark Marshall still collects child pornography has not been rehabilitated.
[3:39] Speaker 2: Bear tells me how he first met Susie.
[3:46] Speaker 7: Soon as he got in touch with me through social media.
[3:48] Speaker 7: I believe, or actually because I've done it. I've done
[3:52] Speaker 7: a couple of interviews with Channel seven and that, and
[3:57] Speaker 7: when I was handing the evidence.
[3:59] Speaker 4: In Hart's grandson, convicted pedophile Mark Marshall, has detailed evidence
[4:03] Speaker 4: against his grandfather from inside prison. That material used by
[4:08] Speaker 4: a private investigators to uncover what they believe is crucial evidence.
[4:12] Speaker 7: Grat Away that he stood up on the back of
[4:14] Speaker 7: my neck and that was confirmation that his story has
[4:17] Speaker 7: some substance somehow. Sous he probably through that media things
[4:25] Speaker 7: she was on the same news segments. Let's how she
[4:29] Speaker 7: found out about me and what I was doing, and
[4:32] Speaker 7: we ended up meeting up and becoming friends.
[4:36] Speaker 2: So let's just run through a bit of a timeline here.
[4:38] Speaker 2: January two thousand and seven is when Mark Marshall writes
[4:41] Speaker 2: a confession letter for one of a Better word, saying
[4:44] Speaker 2: his grandfather was involved in the disappearance of Joanne and Kirsty.
[4:48] Speaker 2: Then in March two thousand and seven, Marshall speaks about
[4:52] Speaker 2: his confession before the Commissioner Mulligan as part of the
[4:56] Speaker 2: Children in State Care Commission of inquiry. That detail of
[5:00] Speaker 2: that State Care Commission of inquiry is actually sealed, but
[5:04] Speaker 2: it was leaked, is that right? Yes, it was leaked
[5:08] Speaker 2: and was online for maybe about six months before they
[5:11] Speaker 2: found it and were able to remove it from online,
[5:14] Speaker 2: not before. Lots of people have got copies of it,
[5:18] Speaker 2: which I believe.
[5:18] Speaker 7: You haven't even Yeah, I've got a proper hardback copy
[5:22] Speaker 7: from the inquiry.
[5:24] Speaker 2: Then in December two thousand and eight, major crime detectives
[5:28] Speaker 2: led by you, I believe, were given the documents and
[5:33] Speaker 2: search of the Yatna farmhouse and the dam and they
[5:37] Speaker 2: removed a couple of items. Tell me about how all
[5:39] Speaker 2: that came about. And what did the police say when
[5:41] Speaker 2: you first went to them saying that you had information.
[5:43] Speaker 7: Ah, the police said it was all fantasy and fiction
[5:47] Speaker 7: and none of it existed. And I said, well, we've
[5:52] Speaker 7: actually found a place, and we were we've been up
[5:57] Speaker 7: there and yeah, yeah, we've been out there too. They
[5:59] Speaker 7: said this and there and then, but they went to
[6:07] Speaker 7: the wrong location. They actually went to the wrong house.
[6:11] Speaker 7: I told them about the dam. There was a service
[6:14] Speaker 7: tunnel underneath the dam, and they was still a total
[6:19] Speaker 7: disbelief of the whole thing. And I told him about
[6:23] Speaker 7: the dam and that we'd found the service tunnel underneath it,
[6:26] Speaker 7: and I said to the police officer. Another guy, a
[6:30] Speaker 7: friend of mine, Rambo, had gone out there with them
[6:34] Speaker 7: and showed them. He showed them where we found various
[6:40] Speaker 7: bones that apparently didn't belong to a human. But there
[6:43] Speaker 7: was definitely an ankle bone, but that was from an adult,
[6:48] Speaker 7: so we believe that might may have been an aboriginal remain.
[6:53] Speaker 7: Rainbow took them out there and they stood on a
[6:56] Speaker 7: big rainwater tank in the creek, and a friend of
[7:00] Speaker 7: mine was actually up in the hill filming the whole
[7:04] Speaker 7: thing happening to be sure that one friend wouldn't disappear,
[7:09] Speaker 7: et cetera. The police. One of the police officers actually
[7:13] Speaker 7: slipped and nearly fell into the water. And when I
[7:18] Speaker 7: went to do the interview, when I was handing in evidence,
[7:21] Speaker 7: I was telling him, I said, you know when you
[7:23] Speaker 7: slipped off the barrel, and he goes yeah, And I said, well,
[7:27] Speaker 7: you nearly went into the tunnel. I said, the tunnel's
[7:30] Speaker 7: right there. And then he got interested and he sat
[7:34] Speaker 7: he sat up and got very interested about the whole thing.
[7:37] Speaker 7: And he didn't know anything about the tunnel because it
[7:41] Speaker 7: was very well concealed. And we got down there on
[7:47] Speaker 7: the hands and knees in a months of the mud
[7:49] Speaker 7: and the water and everything we took out. We took
[7:52] Speaker 7: a bilge pump out there, we took winches and everything.
[7:57] Speaker 7: We pulled all the crap out of the creek so
[7:58] Speaker 7: we could get into the entrance there. And then and
[8:03] Speaker 7: the way we found it, we act he found a
[8:05] Speaker 7: gate laying under a tree, a great big steel gate
[8:09] Speaker 7: to it. And it was like, oh, we've got kids,
[8:12] Speaker 7: there's a tunnel here. There is a tunnel here, And
[8:15] Speaker 7: so we started looking for it and then then we
[8:18] Speaker 7: found a tunnel. But after I'd pointed out that that
[8:21] Speaker 7: that police officer had nearly slipped into that tunnel, he
[8:24] Speaker 7: became very very interested in the whole thing again. And yeah,
[8:31] Speaker 7: that's where we found the barrels inside that tunnel, and
[8:33] Speaker 7: it has been sealed up for years and years and years.
[8:39] Speaker 2: Now. Those barrels were written about it. In Mark's statement,
[8:42] Speaker 2: he'd talked about seeing a body in those barrels and
[8:49] Speaker 2: he believed that body was joe Ane's, so.
[8:53] Speaker 7: Right, somebody hid them there for a reason, and there
[8:56] Speaker 7: was there was three of them all up and they
[8:59] Speaker 7: were definitely hidden there for a reason. Barrels we got
[9:04] Speaker 7: a had to do a test on them, and the
[9:10] Speaker 7: vets did a special blood testing and it came up
[9:14] Speaker 7: positive to blood and a very low acid, which which
[9:19] Speaker 7: is like a really powerful asset. And then we handed
[9:23] Speaker 7: it over to the police. We handed temples over to
[9:26] Speaker 7: the police and they said, no, there's not there's no,
[9:31] Speaker 7: we can't come up with any human DNA, and that
[9:35] Speaker 7: was pretty much it. They just dismissed the barrels. When
[9:41] Speaker 7: we opened the barrels, they stunk and and all the
[9:48] Speaker 7: remaining liquid had poured out of them, and then we
[9:52] Speaker 7: took the solids and got them tests well, or handed
[9:57] Speaker 7: them to the police, and we won. We sent one
[10:01] Speaker 7: off to a to a vet and went off to
[10:03] Speaker 7: the police and the police couldn't come up with any.
[10:10] Speaker 2: So that first time that you went to the barrels
[10:13] Speaker 2: was January two thousand and nine. In December twenty eleven,
[10:16] Speaker 2: Mark Marshall was on the cusp of release from prison
[10:19] Speaker 2: and he was caught stockpiling child porn in his cell.
[10:23] Speaker 2: April twenty twelve, the Adelaide Advertiser reports news of a
[10:27] Speaker 2: confession by Marshall in which Heart, his granddad is named
[10:31] Speaker 2: as a suspect. And the document, as you've said, is
[10:34] Speaker 2: provided to major crime police, who label it a fantasy.
[10:38] Speaker 2: Why do you think police would label it a fantasy?
[10:40] Speaker 2: That's pretty strong words after you've given him a lot
[10:44] Speaker 2: of information.
[10:46] Speaker 7: Well, Hart was a known pedophile in Adelaide and he
[10:50] Speaker 7: was put on that property by government. He was sent
[10:54] Speaker 7: out to there to get him away from Adelaide because
[10:57] Speaker 7: he was molesting too many children. If you've got a
[11:02] Speaker 7: pedophile ring that's catering for the high high end of society,
[11:07] Speaker 7: you'd probably want to protect that bit a boring. Yeah,
[11:11] Speaker 7: you probably want to make sure that those that high
[11:14] Speaker 7: end of society doesn't get caught. No doubt there would
[11:17] Speaker 7: have been low lives involved, but I did so there
[11:20] Speaker 7: was some high end people involved as well.
[11:24] Speaker 2: So in August twenty fourteen, Mark and his team of
[11:27] Speaker 2: private investigators essentially by Keymates said the contents of the
[11:32] Speaker 2: barrels that they found in the damn wall of for testing.
[11:36] Speaker 2: Nothing of note was found except for a weak trace
[11:39] Speaker 2: of blood, but they couldn't prove it was human remains.
[11:43] Speaker 2: Then two years later, on September sixteen, twenty fourteen, the
[11:47] Speaker 2: police returned to the farm for more searchers in close
[11:51] Speaker 2: relation to the cold case.
[11:53] Speaker 3: Good morning everybody. This week in South Astrilia police have
[11:57] Speaker 3: continued their investigations into the nineteen seventy three disappearance of
[12:00] Speaker 3: Joanne Rancliffe eleven years and Coursty Gordon four years from
[12:05] Speaker 3: over on the twenty fifth Forest nineteen seventy three. This
[12:09] Speaker 3: week we've attended several sizes at our properties at Yatna,
[12:13] Speaker 3: which is in the mid north of the state. We've
[12:16] Speaker 3: spent three days excavating a well and examining a second will.
[12:21] Speaker 3: This is in furtherance of a number of visits to
[12:24] Speaker 3: that location over the past twelve months and three previous
[12:28] Speaker 3: occasions where one of the worlds has been excavated.
[12:32] Speaker 2: I asked Bair why police went back to the farm
[12:35] Speaker 2: over two years later.
[12:37] Speaker 7: Because of our prompting and the fact that we've been
[12:40] Speaker 7: to the media. So they had to put up a
[12:45] Speaker 7: bit of a public show that they were doing something.
[12:48] Speaker 7: So they put up a million dollar rewards and all
[12:52] Speaker 7: that sort of stuff and went out there and did
[12:53] Speaker 7: a pr ex and they went to the rule property.
[12:58] Speaker 7: They were eight hundred meters from the property we were
[13:01] Speaker 7: they were supposed to be at. I took Susi there.
[13:04] Speaker 7: I took suit is he out there at a later
[13:06] Speaker 7: date and I showed her And as soon as I
[13:09] Speaker 7: pointed out the world to her, she she's screamed it out.
[13:13] Speaker 7: She goes, where's all the bushes? Because in the footage
[13:18] Speaker 7: that they showed her there was bushes all around the world.
[13:22] Speaker 7: She goes, where's all the bushes? And I pointed at
[13:24] Speaker 7: the property eight hundred meters away and she went they
[13:27] Speaker 7: were all fucking property and she screamed it out. And yeah,
[13:34] Speaker 7: their investigation is botched from start to finish.
[13:41] Speaker 2: You have a few series about what's happened here. The
[13:44] Speaker 2: first is as a pedophile ring and is it your
[13:47] Speaker 2: belief that that police may have been involved in that?
[13:53] Speaker 7: Definitely without a doubt to two officers called Hudson and Carley,
[14:00] Speaker 7: at least two and that that. But they were they
[14:03] Speaker 7: were like the nasty guys that took care of all
[14:07] Speaker 7: the nasti dealings. And they've even been mustered for assaulting
[14:13] Speaker 7: people in Salisbury and everything. And they also got mustered
[14:17] Speaker 7: for murdering doctor Duncan in the Adelaide River.
[14:26] Speaker 2: The story of doctor Duncan was a large story in Adelaide.
[14:30] Speaker 2: George Duncan was an Australian law lecturer at the University
[14:34] Speaker 2: of Adelaide who drowned in nineteen seventy two after being
[14:37] Speaker 2: thrown into the River Torrents by a group of men
[14:40] Speaker 2: believed to be police officers.
[14:42] Speaker 5: Forty years since the death of gay law lecturer doctor
[14:45] Speaker 5: George Duncan, his unsolved murder prompted the state to decriminalize homosexuality.
[14:50] Speaker 5: Wreaths were placed in the River Torrens where doctor Duncan
[14:53] Speaker 5: drowned in nineteen seventy two.
[14:56] Speaker 2: Witnesses at the time, declined to identify the attackers, and
[15:00] Speaker 2: even the Premier of South Australia at the time offered
[15:03] Speaker 2: government protection to witnesses after it was reported that they
[15:07] Speaker 2: feared for their lives. Within days of the murder, it
[15:11] Speaker 2: was suspected that the group of men who killed Duncan
[15:14] Speaker 2: with three senior Vice Squad police officers. Public debate was
[15:19] Speaker 2: so great that police called in detectives from Scotland Yard.
[15:23] Speaker 2: Their report, which was not made public until two thousand
[15:25] Speaker 2: and two, indicated that Vice Squad officers Francis Cowley, Michael
[15:30] Speaker 2: Clayton and Brian Hudson had taken part in the three assaults.
[15:35] Speaker 2: The incident, described as a frolic, failed to find sufficient
[15:38] Speaker 2: evidence to prosecute any of the officers due to a
[15:41] Speaker 2: lack of witness testimony. All three detectives were called upon
[15:45] Speaker 2: to give evidence, but declined. In nineteen eighty five, a
[15:49] Speaker 2: former Vice Squad officer, mick O'shay, who had resigned in
[15:53] Speaker 2: eighty one, told an Adelaide newspaper that the group involved
[15:57] Speaker 2: were Vice Squad officers and that there was a cover
[16:00] Speaker 2: up to protect them. On the fifth of February nineteen
[16:03] Speaker 2: eighty six, called Clayton and Hudson were charged with the
[16:08] Speaker 2: manslaughter of Duncan. Corley and Clayton eventually went to trial
[16:13] Speaker 2: in nineteen eighty eight, with both being acquitted of the charges.
[16:18] Speaker 2: During the trial, O'Shea made specific allegations that it was
[16:22] Speaker 2: common practice for Vice Squad officers to throw homosexuals in
[16:26] Speaker 2: the river. A police task force was set up, reporting
[16:30] Speaker 2: to the South Australian Parliament. In nineteen ninety, there was
[16:34] Speaker 2: insufficient evidence to charge any person with the murder. Repeated
[16:38] Speaker 2: calls for a royal commission have been ignored. This information
[16:43] Speaker 2: is important in this podcast as it might feel it
[16:45] Speaker 2: takes us down a rabbit hole, but there believes that
[16:49] Speaker 2: there was some sort of pedophile ring in Adelaide in
[16:51] Speaker 2: the sixties and seventies. He also believes that police knew
[16:55] Speaker 2: about it. It would correlate with the Beaumont children who
[16:59] Speaker 2: went missing in nineteen sixty six. This pedophile ring was
[17:02] Speaker 2: one of the reasons the Royal Commission into Children and
[17:05] Speaker 2: Care began. In twenty sixteen, it was reported that a
[17:09] Speaker 2: pedophile ring operating in Adelaide for more than two decades
[17:13] Speaker 2: had international links with groups in the United Kingdom.
[17:19] Speaker 9: In the virtual world. He was the undisputed leader of
[17:22] Speaker 9: the globe's biggest child abuse site, an online network of
[17:27] Speaker 9: pedophiles in dozens of countries.
[17:30] Speaker 2: Bears claims may not be as far fetched as you
[17:33] Speaker 2: may think. They're also shared another claim with me which
[17:37] Speaker 2: is harder to believe but worthy of exploring. Mark Marshall.
[17:43] Speaker 2: You believe you know his real identity.
[17:46] Speaker 7: Yeah, I believe he could. There's a possibility. There's a
[17:51] Speaker 7: very strung possibility because he fits the same age group,
[17:57] Speaker 7: he's around the same age, he's at that location all
[18:04] Speaker 7: right now as a very young child. Maybe Grant Beaumont
[18:10] Speaker 7: looks spared because he was younger and he wouldn't have
[18:13] Speaker 7: too many memories. And I believe that he may possibly
[18:19] Speaker 7: be Grant Beaumont.
[18:23] Speaker 2: So you're saying Mark Marshall, who is currently in jail
[18:27] Speaker 2: as a pedophile, could be Grant Beaumont, who was the
[18:31] Speaker 2: youngest of the three children taken in Adelaide in nineteen
[18:34] Speaker 2: sixty six.
[18:36] Speaker 7: It's a very strong possibility.
[18:39] Speaker 2: Let's just run through that possibility. Grant Beaumont was four
[18:43] Speaker 2: when he went missing in nineteen sixty six, which would
[18:46] Speaker 2: have made him eleven years old at the time. Of
[18:48] Speaker 2: Joanne's disappearance, which is about the same age as Joanne.
[18:52] Speaker 2: In Mark's statement, he talks a lot about him and
[18:56] Speaker 2: Joanne were sort of friends and they'd seen each other
[18:58] Speaker 2: before at the football as a right.
[19:01] Speaker 7: He does say that in his statement.
[19:03] Speaker 2: Yet, and Joanne, from Susie's account, was a friendly person
[19:08] Speaker 2: who would be quite motherly and would talk to anyone.
[19:13] Speaker 2: She was very aware of her surroundings, so she wasn't
[19:15] Speaker 2: the sort of person that would go off with someone
[19:17] Speaker 2: that she didn't know. So there's a high chance that
[19:20] Speaker 2: Mark Marshall and Joanne knew each other from the football.
[19:25] Speaker 7: There is a possibility.
[19:27] Speaker 2: Grant was four when he went missing. As I mentioned Mark,
[19:32] Speaker 2: who you believe might be Grant Beaumont was born on
[19:36] Speaker 2: the twentieth of the ninth, nineteen sixty nine. Have you
[19:40] Speaker 2: explored any records of his birth.
[19:43] Speaker 7: No, I haven't been able to do any of that.
[19:47] Speaker 7: I didn't Yeah, I just didn't have access to anything.
[19:50] Speaker 7: We ran that theory and we tried to find what
[19:54] Speaker 7: information we could, but there's nothing I could say yes
[20:00] Speaker 7: or no about that.
[20:01] Speaker 2: Are the DNA records of the Beaumont children? Do you know?
[20:06] Speaker 7: I really don't know. There have to be some DNA.
[20:08] Speaker 7: Surely they took the DNA from the family at some point.
[20:14] Speaker 2: Surely, Yeah, so that's.
[20:15] Speaker 7: But then again, but then again, it was a long
[20:18] Speaker 7: time before DNA was It was really happening, wasn't it.
[20:22] Speaker 2: But if there are surviving members of that family, the
[20:24] Speaker 2: Beaumont family, then you would think that.
[20:27] Speaker 7: That they could take a sample and compare it. I
[20:30] Speaker 7: did mention this theory to the police.
[20:32] Speaker 2: What about Mike Marshall. Has he ever had DNA taken
[20:35] Speaker 2: from him?
[20:37] Speaker 7: Not that I know of. I dare say he would have,
[20:40] Speaker 7: because when you committed serious crimes, they take DNA swabs
[20:44] Speaker 7: off here. That's just part of part of the law.
[20:48] Speaker 7: So then have to be a DNA sample somewhere from him.
[20:53] Speaker 2: Kirsty Gordon and Joeanne Ratcliffe's disappearance is often overshadowed by
[20:57] Speaker 2: the Beaumont case that happened in nineteen sixty six, where
[21:01] Speaker 2: three members of the same family went missing from near
[21:04] Speaker 2: a Glunel beach. In the case of the Beaumont children,
[21:07] Speaker 2: it's widely accepted they were abducted. Kirsty and Joanne's case
[21:11] Speaker 2: is similar. Lots of people saw them on the day
[21:14] Speaker 2: they disappeared from Adelaide Oval between the third and fourth
[21:17] Speaker 2: quarter of football. There were reports of a large, stooped
[21:20] Speaker 2: man carrying Kirsty and dragging the older Joanne across the
[21:24] Speaker 2: bridge over the river. There were also multiple suspects or
[21:28] Speaker 2: persons of interests Arthur Brown, a known pedophile and murderer
[21:33] Speaker 2: who died before ever being convicted, and Mark Marshall's grandfather
[21:37] Speaker 2: Stanley Hart, who was also a known pedophile. Bear has
[21:41] Speaker 2: made some big claims. Firstly, the police had knowledge of
[21:45] Speaker 2: a pedophile ring in Adelaide and that secondly, Mark Marshall
[21:49] Speaker 2: might actually be one of the Beaumont children. We wanted
[21:55] Speaker 2: to put this to police. Susie has told us that
[21:57] Speaker 2: police have been helpful across the years, but the case
[22:00] Speaker 2: has changed hands lots of times. There have been times
[22:04] Speaker 2: where Susie call police to ask them for an update.
[22:08] Speaker 2: This is not uncommon. Police would receive lots of information
[22:11] Speaker 2: around missing people often and it would be near impossible
[22:15] Speaker 2: to call everyone every time something new comes forward without
[22:19] Speaker 2: first investigating it. Susie gave us the name of the
[22:22] Speaker 2: officer who was now running this investigation. I rang him
[22:27] Speaker 2: and he took our cold call. It was interesting. As
[22:32] Speaker 2: I was talking to him some bloke who'd called him
[22:34] Speaker 2: out of the blue asking him about missing children from
[22:37] Speaker 2: the nineteen seventies. He was suspicious. He actually quizzed me
[22:42] Speaker 2: while we're talking, and he checked me out on who
[22:44] Speaker 2: I was on the police database. As I told him
[22:47] Speaker 2: my name, he told me in my address and my
[22:49] Speaker 2: driver's license number. I put to him some of the
[22:53] Speaker 2: questions that had come up through the podcast. He, as
[22:56] Speaker 2: you would expect, needed some time to run stuff by
[22:58] Speaker 2: upper management and said he'd come back to us A
[23:04] Speaker 2: week later, and after a couple of follow up emails,
[23:07] Speaker 2: we received an email from Police Media in South Australia.
[23:11] Speaker 2: They declined to be part of the podcast, at least
[23:13] Speaker 2: from an audio point of view, but did answer some
[23:15] Speaker 2: of the questions we put to them. My first question
[23:18] Speaker 2: was about something bare and said when we chatted in
[23:20] Speaker 2: episode three. The question was why to police at the
[23:24] Speaker 2: time label some of the things been mentioned as a fantasy.
[23:28] Speaker 2: Their response, we will not provide comment on the veracity
[23:32] Speaker 2: of information provided by individuals, except to say that we
[23:36] Speaker 2: assess all information provided and investigate the potential involvement of
[23:40] Speaker 2: the nominated persons of interest. I also asked how credible
[23:44] Speaker 2: the statement of Mark Marshall was. Their answer was the same,
[23:49] Speaker 2: We will not provide comment on the veracity of information.
[23:52] Speaker 2: You get the idea. I didn't seem to be getting
[23:55] Speaker 2: much from my line of questioning, so we went to
[23:57] Speaker 2: some questions that we thought we knew the answer to.
[24:02] Speaker 2: The first are Stanley Hart and Arthur Brown, although deceased,
[24:06] Speaker 2: still persons of interest. Their response, the people named are
[24:10] Speaker 2: either known pedophiles or accused of being pedophiles, and there
[24:14] Speaker 2: is nothing to suggest any greater likelihood of them being
[24:17] Speaker 2: the offender when compared to the large number of other
[24:20] Speaker 2: potential offenders. The allegations against stan Hard are very serious,
[24:24] Speaker 2: and some people genuinely believe them to be true. However,
[24:29] Speaker 2: it pays to remember that just because someone holds a
[24:31] Speaker 2: particular belief, this does not make it true. I had
[24:36] Speaker 2: a few more questions which I asked in my email.
[24:39] Speaker 2: Asked about Bear's claims that Mark Marshall might be Grant Beaumont.
[24:43] Speaker 2: They told me there's no evidence to support that theory.
[24:47] Speaker 2: I also made mention of Bear's claims about a pedophile
[24:50] Speaker 2: ring that may have been responsible for both the Beaumont
[24:53] Speaker 2: children's abduction and Kirsty and Joanne's disappearance. Again, they told
[24:59] Speaker 2: me there's no evidence to support this theory. My final
[25:02] Speaker 2: question in the email was one that I just through
[25:05] Speaker 2: in and I thought I knew the answer to it,
[25:08] Speaker 2: but it turns out it was the most interesting question
[25:10] Speaker 2: of all. The question was are there any other persons
[25:15] Speaker 2: of interest that police are still investigating? Is this still
[25:19] Speaker 2: an ongoing investigation? Their response, Even now forty seven years
[25:24] Speaker 2: since the offense, we continue to have people nominated as suspects.
[25:29] Speaker 2: These individuals are investigated in an attempt to either show
[25:32] Speaker 2: possible involvement in the offense or to exclude them. The
[25:37] Speaker 2: disappearance of children is given the highest priority, and this
[25:40] Speaker 2: case has been subject of an ongoing review. We are
[25:44] Speaker 2: committed to investigating any credible leads that arise. There were
[25:48] Speaker 2: a few lines that spark my interest in their response,
[25:53] Speaker 2: and in particular they might be still investigating other people
[25:56] Speaker 2: that are not named as yet. Could police have new
[25:59] Speaker 2: suspects or persons of interest that they're currently investigating that
[26:03] Speaker 2: we don't know about. We thought we'd call Susie to
[26:06] Speaker 2: find out if she had an update.
[26:10] Speaker 10: Hello, sus you speaking Hi.
[26:12] Speaker 2: Susan it's Jay. Are you going? We had a brief moment,
[26:14] Speaker 2: small too, and then I launched him to the question
[26:17] Speaker 2: I wanted to ask, did Susie know there could be
[26:21] Speaker 2: other persons of interests that are currently being investigated?
[26:26] Speaker 10: He did mention it when I spoke with him the
[26:28] Speaker 10: other day. I wasn't aware of it before then, but yeah,
[26:33] Speaker 10: he did mention it the other day when I was
[26:35] Speaker 10: talking with him.
[26:37] Speaker 2: And did he give you any information?
[26:40] Speaker 10: No, just said that they're investigating somebody else, a couple
[26:44] Speaker 10: of other people of interest and that was as far
[26:47] Speaker 10: as he would tell me. He did mention he had
[26:52] Speaker 10: spoken a David late last year about it, and Mark said, oh,
[27:00] Speaker 10: do you want me to speak to Suzi about it?
[27:02] Speaker 10: And Dave said no, I'll speak to them. And then
[27:06] Speaker 10: things went a little bit pear shaped my depression. I
[27:10] Speaker 10: was struggling with the depression at the time, so day thought,
[27:13] Speaker 10: I don't believe it, But now I'm bringing up a
[27:15] Speaker 10: little bit later. But unfortunately, yeah, other things happened in
[27:21] Speaker 10: the meantime and we never go I never go a
[27:23] Speaker 10: chance to speak to him about it. So Mark did
[27:26] Speaker 10: say to me that he was going to kind of
[27:28] Speaker 10: let me know a little bit further down the track
[27:30] Speaker 10: at this stage, he wasn't going to say stay too much.
[27:36] Speaker 10: They are interested in investigating a couple of other people.
[27:39] Speaker 2: Any ideas of where those people have come from. Has
[27:41] Speaker 2: it been crime stoppers or is it something else?
[27:44] Speaker 10: I think actually it was stuff that was already in
[27:47] Speaker 10: the files, because Marc has said to me right from
[27:51] Speaker 10: the get go that he believed the answers in the files.
[27:55] Speaker 10: And that's what one of the previous detectives told me
[28:02] Speaker 10: as well, probably about five six years ago. He told
[28:07] Speaker 10: me then that he would have ance during the file
[28:09] Speaker 10: that he would taken off the case and put on
[28:11] Speaker 10: for another case, being never got to follow it up.
[28:14] Speaker 2: So Susie has the same feeling and has spoken to police,
[28:16] Speaker 2: but they haven't given her much information. Susie mentioned that
[28:20] Speaker 2: police had spoken with her brother David last year while
[28:23] Speaker 2: she was going through some tough times, and some things
[28:26] Speaker 2: happened between then and now, so she hadn't had a
[28:29] Speaker 2: chance to talk to her brother David. In fact, the
[28:33] Speaker 2: last few years have been tough on Susie, not just
[28:36] Speaker 2: because of her missing sister, but because it feels like
[28:39] Speaker 2: she's had a run of bad fortune.
[28:41] Speaker 8: To say the least of twenty nineteen. Twenty twenty has
[28:44] Speaker 8: been two years that I'd like to forget. In April,
[28:50] Speaker 8: I got the news that my brother had passed away.
[28:55] Speaker 8: He'd had a heart attack and died in the arms
[29:01] Speaker 8: of his wife, two weeks short or two months short, sorry,
[29:09] Speaker 8: of his sixtieth birthday. I mean you instead of you
[29:17] Speaker 8: never expect the call, or you never you can never
[29:20] Speaker 8: prepare yourself for anything like this. But last year when
[29:24] Speaker 8: I lost Mom, I was prepared to a certain point
[29:27] Speaker 8: because I knew her health was deteriorating. It felt like
[29:33] Speaker 8: somebody had come up and just ripped the rug right
[29:35] Speaker 8: out from beneath my feet and I was falling. It
[29:41] Speaker 8: was just some unexpected and only spoke with him, you know,
[29:44] Speaker 8: the previous week, and you know, just joking on the phone,
[29:49] Speaker 8: and you know, listening to him rambling on about his
[29:54] Speaker 8: bloody camper trailer. It was just it was such a
[30:00] Speaker 8: shock and I just I couldn't grasp grasp but I thought,
[30:07] Speaker 8: I know someone's playing some stip joke. This is ridiculous,
[30:15] Speaker 8: and it just at that point I just thought, you know,
[30:20] Speaker 8: I'm it. I'm the last of the immediate Ratcliffe family,
[30:26] Speaker 8: and it just it flawed me to think that, you know,
[30:32] Speaker 8: we've we've fought so hard for so long, and everything
[30:38] Speaker 8: that I've been fighting for is it hasn't been worth
[30:42] Speaker 8: it because I haven't got, you know, my brother or
[30:45] Speaker 8: my mum to give them the answers that they've longed
[30:49] Speaker 8: for for so long. So I did hit an extremely
[30:54] Speaker 8: deep hole.
[30:59] Speaker 2: In the next episode of Little Lost Girls.
[31:02] Speaker 1: People have told me what her real name is now
[31:04] Speaker 1: who But I didn't know. I just knew it as Joanne.
[31:08] Speaker 2: Inside the mind of the depraved Mark Marshall.
[31:13] Speaker 1: The tunnels was something they used to give you, especially
[31:16] Speaker 1: the girls, but they gave me one Artie.
[31:19] Speaker 2: Caroline would do route things with Steven and get Joanne
[31:22] Speaker 2: to do root things with me.
[31:23] Speaker 1: And the toilets. Yes, we went to the car first
[31:27] Speaker 1: and then Joeanne come with the other girl. She was
[31:30] Speaker 1: holding her hand. Yes, the granddad was following him.
