Today's biggest winners and losers in the stock market. Shares in Hong Kong are 5.2% lower. - Novartis raised its outlook for the year as growth from newer medicines increasingly offset the hit from generic competition to former blockbuster Entresto. - Shares in Universal Music Group, the world’s largest record company, rose after it discussed going private with a few prominent Wall Street firms, according to people familiar with the matter. [0:08] Speaker 1: The Stock Movers Report. Your roundup of companies making moves
[0:12] Speaker 1: in the stock market. Harnessing the power of Bloomberg data.
[0:16] Speaker 1: Let's have a look at some of the stocks on
[0:17] Speaker 1: the move today in Europe. I'm Caroline Hepke with Stephen Carroll.
[0:20] Speaker 1: We're joined by Bloomberg reporter Josh Gorn Warner. Josh, good
[0:23] Speaker 1: to speak to you.
[0:24] Speaker 2: Let's start with HSBC, the UK's biggest bank.
[0:26] Speaker 1: Mixed results.
[0:28] Speaker 2: And investors don't seem to like it very much.
[0:30] Speaker 1: Just tell us a bit more about HSBC.
[0:33] Speaker 2: Yeah, good morning. So, the bank delivered a 32% rise
[0:36] Speaker 2: in quarterly profit and a nice $ 1 billion share buyback.
[0:39] Speaker 2: But it doesn't seem to be enough to meet quite
[0:41] Speaker 2: lofty expectations of investors. They were anticipating even stronger growth
[0:46] Speaker 2: and some were even looking for a better outlook to
[0:48] Speaker 2: be issued today. The rise in profits was driven by
[0:52] Speaker 2: higher interest rates, robust inflows for its wealth division, and
[0:55] Speaker 2: also some lower credit losses than expected. But Goldman Sachs
[0:59] Speaker 2: said the miss on net interest income suggests the benefit
[1:03] Speaker 2: of the improved rate backdrop may be less than previously hoped.
[1:06] Speaker 2: And the bank also flagged some pressure on deposits in
[1:09] Speaker 2: the U.K. and Hong Kong. And that prompted Jefferies to
[1:12] Speaker 2: suggest that its guidance out to 2028 may actually be
[1:15] Speaker 2: somewhat ambitious. HSB shares were weak in Hong Kong, currently
[1:20] Speaker 2: down about 5.5. The weakness is bleeding through to the
[1:23] Speaker 2: European Open. Shares in London are down about 7% at
[1:26] Speaker 2: present and at their lowest level since May. Things a
[1:30] Speaker 2: bit more positive in terms of investor reception, though, to
[1:32] Speaker 2: the numbers out of the Swiss drugmaker Novartis.
[1:35] Speaker 1: Yes.
[1:36] Speaker 2: So, Novartis up about 2% this morning after topping expectations
[1:40] Speaker 2: and raising its guidance for the rest of the year.
[1:43] Speaker 2: Growth from newer medicines is offsetting the hit from generic competition.
[1:47] Speaker 2: Novartis now expecting core operating profits to come in flattish
[1:50] Speaker 2: or slightly higher this year. It previously forecast a mild decline,
[1:55] Speaker 2: so not too much of a blowout guidance raise, but
[1:57] Speaker 2: it is reassuring investors. These results come as Novartis is
[2:02] Speaker 2: hunting for new medicines as cheaper copies eat into sales
[2:05] Speaker 2: of some of its former bestsellers. Vontabel said that the
[2:08] Speaker 2: profit beat was surprisingly good considering the amount of generic
[2:11] Speaker 2: competition starting to impact several drugs. And, you know, this
[2:15] Speaker 2: situation has been under the spotlight. Three recent clinical trial
[2:18] Speaker 2: setbacks have been in focus. And that is also raising
[2:21] Speaker 2: the stakes for the remaining treatments in the pipeline. So,
[2:24] Speaker 2: you know, questions remain on the future. But Novartis is
[2:26] Speaker 2: providing some reassurance today. Okay.
[2:29] Speaker 1: Lastly, Universal Music Group reaction to what may happen next
[2:34] Speaker 1: for this business. Yeah.
[2:36] Speaker 2: So, I mean, outside the world of earnings, we've got
[2:38] Speaker 2: the world's largest record company. You know, this is home
[2:40] Speaker 2: to acts like Taylor Swift and Kendrick Lamar. It's gaining
[2:44] Speaker 2: on reports that it previously discussed going private with a
[2:46] Speaker 2: few prominent Wall Street firms. It held preliminary talks with
[2:50] Speaker 2: private equity groups, including Apollo, TPG and Blackstone. The conversations
[2:55] Speaker 2: did not progress and Universal has not put itself up
[2:57] Speaker 2: for sale, according to people familiar with the matter. But still,
[3:01] Speaker 2: this news is providing a boost because the share price
[3:04] Speaker 2: has sagged and has prompted many at the company and
[3:08] Speaker 2: on Wall Street to wonder whether the music giant would
[3:10] Speaker 2: be better off as a private firm. The stock is
[3:12] Speaker 2: down 27% this year. It's below its IPO price when
[3:17] Speaker 2: it went public in 2021. And notably, Universal was already
[3:21] Speaker 2: a takeover target earlier this year. One of its shareholders
[3:24] Speaker 2: wanted to make an offer and move it to the U.S.
[3:26] Speaker 2: in the hope of a higher valuation. But this was
[3:29] Speaker 2: rejected despite its biggest investor agreeing that the firm is undervalued. So,
[3:34] Speaker 2: one to keep an eye on for sure.
