[0:08] Speaker 1: The Stock Movers Report. Your roundup of companies making moves
[0:12] Speaker 1: in the stock market. Harnessing the power of Bloomberg data.
[0:16] Speaker 3: Now, let's take a look at some of these stocks
[0:18] Speaker 3: on the move today in Asia. I'm Caroline Hipkin. I'm
[0:21] Speaker 3: joined by Bloomberg's markets reporter, Anthony Stevens. Anthony, good to
[0:24] Speaker 3: speak to you. Let's think about Asia tech shares. We've
[0:28] Speaker 3: had a lot of earnings out. There was a lot
[0:31] Speaker 3: in the US, but Samsung also in your region and
[0:35] Speaker 3: a lot of others. So, where are we in the verdict,
[0:38] Speaker 3: I suppose, on AI in this last quarter?
[0:41] Speaker 2: At an index level, it probably resolves a little bit
[0:44] Speaker 2: to the downside. We started off with Google kind of
[0:47] Speaker 2: offsetting Microsoft and Oracle. And it's very similar in Asia,
[0:51] Speaker 2: where you have weak earnings from Samsung, which does not
[0:54] Speaker 2: execute to quite the same level as Hynix did yesterday.
[0:57] Speaker 2: And they're also a little bit stingy with their corporate
[1:00] Speaker 2: buyback routine and dividend and shareholder return program in general.
[1:04] Speaker 2: So they're down 4% on that disappointing comparison to Hynix.
[1:08] Speaker 2: But over the last two days, it's still up around 2%, right?
[1:12] Speaker 2: In UMC in Taiwan, we also have a miss that's
[1:16] Speaker 2: a second tier name, but the scale of the miss
[1:18] Speaker 2: means that it's down 10% near limit down. And that's
[1:21] Speaker 2: kind of dragging the sentiment in the Taiwan index overall.
[1:24] Speaker 2: We also had misses from the electricity companies, electricity manufacturing
[1:29] Speaker 2: companies in Japan. That's a very strong space actually. So
[1:33] Speaker 2: Vertiv in the US was up 10% overnight. So anyone
[1:37] Speaker 2: expecting any strength in that space in Asia has been disappointed.
[1:41] Speaker 2: Hitachi is down 10% and NEC is down around 7%.
[1:45] Speaker 2: On the upside, we did have some idiosyncratic beats. Advantest,
[1:50] Speaker 2: which is very similar to ASM International in terms of
[1:52] Speaker 2: theme from your side of the world, that's up 6%
[1:55] Speaker 2: on good earnings. And Hyundai India is up 3% after
[1:58] Speaker 2: Indian rich people continue to spend money on cars. So
[2:02] Speaker 2: there's a real diversification in the Indian consumer market. where
[2:05] Speaker 2: the upper middle class is doing really quite well and
[2:07] Speaker 2: everybody else seems to be struggling with the price of oil.
[2:10] Speaker 3: Yeah, okay, interesting. Let's go to China. Investors are being
[2:14] Speaker 3: rewarded for taking cover in state-owned enterprises. Why?
[2:18] Speaker 2: This has been a big theme for the market where
[2:20] Speaker 2: people have been hiding in the banks and the energy sector,
[2:23] Speaker 2: which has gotten exogenous kind of benefit from the high
[2:26] Speaker 2: oil price and China's low bond yields. Then that's worked
[2:30] Speaker 2: out because the tech earnings season is becoming a disaster
[2:33] Speaker 2: in China. Despite very strong earnings growth, valuations are still
[2:38] Speaker 2: way above Korea or even the Nasdaq. And even the
[2:41] Speaker 2: slightest disappointment has huge moves. So for example, we have
[2:44] Speaker 2: Suzhou TFC, pretty decent earnings, a little bit soft, down 20%.
[2:49] Speaker 2: We have Bywin Storage, again, reasonable earnings, a little bit soft,
[2:53] Speaker 2: down 16%. More threads where revenue surged almost 18 times,
[2:59] Speaker 2: it's down 13%. So these are huge moves and the
[3:01] Speaker 2: Star 50 and the Chinex index in China are getting
[3:04] Speaker 2: absolutely hammered. Like it's the worst underperformance of tech versus
[3:08] Speaker 2: the rest of the market globally.
[3:10] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[3:11] Speaker 2: Okay.
[3:11] Speaker 3: So, China. And I've been talking about the Fed. They
[3:14] Speaker 3: left interest rates unchanged yesterday. What does it mean for
[3:16] Speaker 3: banks in Asia?
[3:18] Speaker 2: Banks in Asia now have a clean runway until the
[3:20] Speaker 2: rest of the year. The banks are the easiest way
[3:22] Speaker 2: to play all of this AI growth, right? The lending
[3:25] Speaker 2: is off the charts. The deal flow is off the charts. And,
[3:29] Speaker 2: you know, credit spreads in Asia are generally speaking quite low. And,
[3:33] Speaker 2: you know, you have some stability in the bond markets
[3:35] Speaker 2: in Asia, in the big-ticket bond markets in Asia while
[3:38] Speaker 2: the Fed.
[3:38] Speaker 1: Is on hold.
[3:39] Speaker 2: So as a result, you're seeing strength in the Japan banks.
[3:41] Speaker 2: You have MUFG and SMFG up around 2.5%. We have
[3:45] Speaker 2: ANZ out in Australia up 2%. And OCBC in Singapore
[3:48] Speaker 2: is up 3%. And CCB is up 3%. That's a
[3:50] Speaker 2: big move for a Chinese bank.
