Today's biggest winners and losers in the stock market. On this episode of Stock Movers: - BP Plc said profit surged to the highest in 18 years as soaring refining margins boosted earnings, while a sharp drop in net debt moved the British energy major closer to a position where it could restart buybacks. - Sanofi raised its full-year sales and profit forecasts for a second straight quarter on rising demand for its top-selling skin and asthma drug Dupixent. - Puma SE showed progress with its turnaround efforts, posting third-quarter sales that were in line with estimates as the German sports brand rolls out new products for its running and training franchises. [0:08] Speaker 1: The Stock Movers Report. Your roundup of companies making moves
[0:12] Speaker 1: in the stock market. Harnessing the power of Bloomberg data. Stephen,
[0:16] Speaker 1: thank you so much.
[0:17] Speaker 3: Let's have a look at some of the stocks on
[0:19] Speaker 3: the move today in Europe. I'm Caroline Hepke with Stephen Carroll.
[0:22] Speaker 3: We're joined by Bloomberg reporter Josh Gorn-Warner. Good to see
[0:25] Speaker 3: you this Friday. Let's start with BP reporting its highest
[0:29] Speaker 3: profits in 18 years.
[0:30] Speaker 1: Yes. Yes.
[0:32] Speaker 2: So, adjusted profit surged to almost $ 8. 5 billion in the quarter.
[0:36] Speaker 2: That was almost four times the figure that was reported
[0:39] Speaker 2: just a year earlier. And the main driver there has
[0:42] Speaker 2: been bumper refining margins that boosted those earnings well above expectations.
[0:47] Speaker 2: The other part of the story today is the ongoing
[0:50] Speaker 2: reduction in debt. We saw that figure tumble to just
[0:53] Speaker 2: under $ 14 billion from over $ 22 billion just three months ago. So,
[0:58] Speaker 2: that means that BP has actually hit its target about
[1:00] Speaker 2: a year ahead of schedule. And that's important because it
[1:03] Speaker 2: means that BP is moving closer to where it might
[1:05] Speaker 2: be able to restart share buybacks, which is obviously something
[1:08] Speaker 2: that investors are very keen on. However, the firm did
[1:11] Speaker 2: say the immediate focus is paying off the remaining liabilities
[1:14] Speaker 2: from the Deepwater Horizon disaster back in 2010. We've got
[1:19] Speaker 2: CEO Meg O'Neill, who took over in April. She is
[1:22] Speaker 2: due to outline her longer-term strategy for the company in December.
[1:26] Speaker 2: But for today, shares are up about 1%, moving closer
[1:30] Speaker 2: to the 2010 high that was hit last week. And
[1:32] Speaker 2: most oil peers are following prices higher on signs that
[1:35] Speaker 2: the U.S. may resume military strikes against Iran.
[1:39] Speaker 3: Okay.
[1:39] Speaker 1: So, that's on BP.
[1:40] Speaker 2: Let's turn next to the French drugmaker Sanofi raising its outlook.
[1:44] Speaker 1: Yes.
[1:44] Speaker 2: So, forecasts for both sales and profit have been raised
[1:48] Speaker 2: for this year. And that follows an upgrade in the
[1:51] Speaker 2: previous quarter. And this is being driven by rising demand
[1:54] Speaker 2: for its top-selling skin and asthma drug called Dupiquent. Shares
[2:01] Speaker 2: are up over 5% today and trading at a six-month high. So,
[2:05] Speaker 2: the strength in that drug is managing to outweigh softer
[2:08] Speaker 2: sales in vaccines. Flu shots and its RSV medicine came
[2:14] Speaker 2: under a bit of pressure in the U.S. However, it
[2:16] Speaker 2: is also highlighting its reliance on the drug, and that
[2:19] Speaker 2: is due to lose its patent protection early on in
[2:22] Speaker 2: the next decade. So, investors are currently waiting for some
[2:26] Speaker 2: sort of big acquisition to help plug that gap in time. So,
[2:30] Speaker 2: that is a key theme for the stock to watch
[2:32] Speaker 2: going forward.
[2:33] Speaker 3: Okay, so that with the drug maker Sanofi. Let's lastly
[2:38] Speaker 3: pounce on the earnings from Puma.
[2:41] Speaker 1: Yes.
[2:42] Speaker 2: German sportswear brand is up over 6% today in a
[2:44] Speaker 2: two-month high. It's basically showing progress with its turnaround efforts.
[2:48] Speaker 2: Third quarter sales were in line of expectations. There's been
[2:51] Speaker 2: no change to guidance, but that's all being welcomed. 2026
[2:54] Speaker 2: is being treated as a bit of a transitional year
[2:57] Speaker 2: for Puma. It's grappling with an array of headwinds, including
[3:00] Speaker 2: excess inventories and trying to bring new products to market.
[3:04] Speaker 2: And that's in the hope of setting the firm up
[3:06] Speaker 2: for a better 2027, where it can step up competition
[3:09] Speaker 2: against those bigger rivals like Adidas and Nike. The company
[3:13] Speaker 2: said it's still seeing weakness in some areas, but there
[3:16] Speaker 2: is momentum in, say, running shoes and training apparel. And
[3:20] Speaker 2: although it's still expecting losses this year, today's update is
[3:23] Speaker 2: clearly providing confidence that the firm is on the right path.
