[0:00] Speaker 1: CHAPTER XXX A LACERATION IN THE COTTAGE He certainly was
[0:32] Speaker 1: really grieved in a way he had seldom been before.
[0:36] Speaker 1: He had rushed in like a fool, and meddled in what?
[0:40] Speaker 1: In a love affair. But what do I know about it?
[0:44] Speaker 1: What can I tell about such things? He repeated to
[0:48] Speaker 1: himself for the hundredth time, flushing crimson. Oh, being ashamed
[0:55] Speaker 1: would be nothing. Shame is only the punishment I deserve.
[0:59] Speaker 1: The trouble is I shall certainly have caused more unhappiness,
[1:05] Speaker 1: and Father Zosima sent me to reconcile and bring them together.
[1:09] Speaker 1: Is this the way to bring them together? Then he
[1:13] Speaker 1: suddenly remembered how he had tried to join their hands,
[1:17] Speaker 1: and he felt fearfully ashamed again. Though I acted quite sincerely,
[1:23] Speaker 1: I must be more sensible in the future, he concluded suddenly,
[1:28] Speaker 1: and did not even smile at his conclusion. Katerina Ivanovna's
[1:34] Speaker 1: commission took him to Lake Street, and his brother Dmitry
[1:39] Speaker 1: lived close by in a turning out of Lake Street.
[1:44] Speaker 1: Alyosha decided to go to him in any case before
[1:48] Speaker 1: going to the captain, though he had a presentiment that
[1:53] Speaker 1: he would not find his brother. He suspected that he
[1:56] Speaker 1: would intentionally keep out of his way now, but he
[2:00] Speaker 1: must find him anyhow. Time was passing. The thought of
[2:05] Speaker 1: his dying elder had not left Alyosha for one minute
[2:09] Speaker 1: from the time he set off from the monastery. There
[2:13] Speaker 1: was one point which interested him particularly about Katarina Ivanovna's commission.
[2:19] Speaker 1: When she had mentioned the captain's son, the little schoolboy
[2:24] Speaker 1: who had run beside his father crying, the idea had
[2:28] Speaker 1: at once struck Alyosha. that this must be the schoolboy
[2:33] Speaker 1: who had bitten his finger when he, Alyosha, asked him
[2:37] Speaker 1: what he had done to hurt him. Now Alyosha felt
[2:41] Speaker 1: practically certain of this, though he could not have said why.
[2:47] Speaker 1: Thinking of another subject was a relief, and he resolved
[2:51] Speaker 1: to think no more about the mischief he had done,
[2:55] Speaker 1: and not to torture himself with remorse, but to do
[2:59] Speaker 1: what he had to do, Let come what would. At
[3:03] Speaker 1: that thought he was completely comforted. Turning to the street
[3:09] Speaker 1: where Dimitri lodged, he felt hungry, and taking out of
[3:13] Speaker 1: his pocket the roll he had brought from his father's,
[3:16] Speaker 1: he ate it. It made him feel stronger. Dimitri was
[3:21] Speaker 1: not at home. The people of the house, an old cabinet-maker,
[3:26] Speaker 1: his son and his old wife, looked with positive suspicion
[3:30] Speaker 1: at Alyosha. He hasn't slept here for the last three nights.
[3:36] Speaker 1: Maybe he has gone away, the old man said, in
[3:40] Speaker 1: answer to Alyosha's persistent inquiries. Alyosha saw that he was
[3:47] Speaker 1: answering in accordance with instructions. When he asked whether he
[3:53] Speaker 1: were not at Grushenka's or in hiding at Foma's, Alyosha
[3:59] Speaker 1: spoke so freely on purpose. All three looked at him
[4:04] Speaker 1: in alarm. They are fond of him. They are doing
[4:09] Speaker 1: their best for him, thought Alyosha. That's good. At last
[4:17] Speaker 1: he found the house in Lake Street. It was a
[4:21] Speaker 1: decrepit little house, sunk on one side, with three windows
[4:26] Speaker 1: looking into the street, and with a muddy yard in
[4:30] Speaker 1: the middle of which stood a solitary cow. He crossed
[4:34] Speaker 1: the yard and found the door opening into the passage.
[4:39] Speaker 1: On the left of the passage lived the old woman
[4:43] Speaker 1: of the house with her old daughter. Both seemed to
[4:46] Speaker 1: be deaf. In answer to his repeated inquiry for the captain,
[4:52] Speaker 1: one of them at last understood that he was asking
[4:56] Speaker 1: for their lodgers. and pointed to a door across the passage.
[5:01] Speaker 1: The captain's lodging turned out to be a simple cottage room.
[5:07] Speaker 1: Alyosha had his hand on the iron latch to open
[5:11] Speaker 1: the door, when he was struck by the strange hush within.
[5:16] Speaker 1: Yet he knew from Katerina Ivanovna's words that the man
[5:21] Speaker 1: had a family. Either they are all asleep, or perhaps
[5:26] Speaker 1: they have heard me coming and are waiting for me
[5:29] Speaker 1: to open the door. I'd better knock first.' And he knocked.
[5:35] Speaker 1: An answer came, but not at once, after an interval
[5:41] Speaker 1: of perhaps ten seconds.' Who' s that?' shouted someone in a
[5:48] Speaker 1: loud and very angry voice. Then Alyosha opened the door
[5:55] Speaker 1: and crossed the threshold. He found himself in a regular
[5:59] Speaker 1: peasant's room. Though it was large, it was cumbered up
[6:04] Speaker 1: with domestic belongings of all sorts, and there were several
[6:08] Speaker 1: people in it. On the left was a large Russian stove.
[6:15] Speaker 1: From the stove to the window on the left was
[6:18] Speaker 1: a string running across the room, and on it there
[6:22] Speaker 1: were rags hanging. There was a bedstead against the wall
[6:26] Speaker 1: on each side, right and left, covered with knitted quilts.
[6:32] Speaker 1: On the one on the left was a pyramid of
[6:35] Speaker 1: four print-covered pillows, each smaller than the one beneath. On
[6:41] Speaker 1: the other there was only one very small pillow. The
[6:47] Speaker 1: opposite corner was screened off by a curtain or a
[6:51] Speaker 1: sheet hung on a string. Behind this curtain could be
[6:56] Speaker 1: seen a bed made up on a bench and a chair.
[7:01] Speaker 1: The rough square table of plain wood had been moved
[7:05] Speaker 1: into the middle window. The three windows, which consisted each
[7:11] Speaker 1: of four tiny greenish mildewy panes, gave little light, and
[7:16] Speaker 1: were close shut, so that the room was not very light,
[7:21] Speaker 1: and rather stuffy. On the table was a frying-pan, with
[7:27] Speaker 1: the remains of some fried eggs, a half-eaten piece of bread,
[7:32] Speaker 1: and a small bottle with a few drops of vodka.
[7:37] Speaker 1: A woman of gentile appearance, wearing a cotton gown, was
[7:43] Speaker 1: sitting on a chair by the bed on the left.
[7:46] Speaker 1: Her face was thin and yellow, and her sunken cheeks
[7:50] Speaker 1: betrayed at the first glance that she was ill. but
[7:54] Speaker 1: what struck Alyosha most was the expression in the poor
[7:58] Speaker 1: woman's eyes, a look of surprised inquiry and yet of
[8:03] Speaker 1: haughty pride, and while he was talking to her husband,
[8:08] Speaker 1: her big brown eyes moved from one speaker to the
[8:12] Speaker 1: other with the same haughty and questioning expression. Beside her,
[8:19] Speaker 1: at the window, stood a young girl, rather plain, with
[8:23] Speaker 1: scanty reddish hair, poorly but very neatly dressed. She looked
[8:30] Speaker 1: disdainfully at Alyosha as he came in. Beside the other
[8:36] Speaker 1: bed was sitting another female figure. She was a very
[8:41] Speaker 1: sad sight, a young girl of about twenty, but hunchback
[8:45] Speaker 1: and crippled, with withered legs, as Alyosha was told afterwards.
[8:52] Speaker 1: Her crutches stood in the corner close by. The strikingly
[8:56] Speaker 1: beautiful and gentle eyes of this poor girl looked with
[9:01] Speaker 1: mild serenity at Alyosha. A man of forty-five was sitting
[9:07] Speaker 1: at the table, finishing the fried eggs. He was spare,
[9:12] Speaker 1: small and weakly built. He had reddish hair, and a
[9:16] Speaker 1: scanty light-coloured beard, very much like a wisp of toe.
[9:22] Speaker 1: This comparison, and the phrase a wisp of toe, flashed
[9:27] Speaker 1: at once into Alyosha's mind, for some reason he remembered
[9:31] Speaker 1: it afterwards. It was obviously this gentleman who had shouted
[9:38] Speaker 1: to him, as there was no other man in the room.
[9:42] Speaker 1: But when Alyosha went in, he leapt up from the
[9:45] Speaker 1: bench on which he was sitting, and, hastily wiping his
[9:49] Speaker 1: mouth with a ragged napkin, darted up to Aloysius. It's
[9:55] Speaker 1: a monk. Come to beg for the monastery. A nice
[9:58] Speaker 1: place to come to. the girl standing in the left
[10:02] Speaker 1: corner said aloud. The man spun round instantly towards her,
[10:07] Speaker 1: and answered her in an excited and breaking voice,' No, Bavara,
[10:12] Speaker 1: you are wrong. Allow me to ask.' He turned again
[10:15] Speaker 1: to Alyosha.' What has brought you to our retreat?' Alyosha
[10:22] Speaker 1: looked attentively at him. It was the first time he
[10:25] Speaker 1: had seen him. There was something angular, florid, and irritable
[10:31] Speaker 1: about him. Though he had obviously just been drinking, he
[10:35] Speaker 1: was not drunk. There was extraordinary impudence in his expression,
[10:41] Speaker 1: and yet, strange to say, at the same time there
[10:44] Speaker 1: was fear. He looked like a man who had long
[10:48] Speaker 1: been kept in subjection, and had submitted to it, and
[10:52] Speaker 1: now had suddenly turned and was trying to assert himself.
[10:56] Speaker 1: Or better still, like a man who wants dreadfully to
[10:59] Speaker 1: hit you, but is horribly afraid you will hit him.
[11:03] Speaker 1: In his words, and in the intonation of his shrill voice,
[11:08] Speaker 1: there was a sort of crazy humour, at times spiteful
[11:12] Speaker 1: and at times cringing, and continually shifting from one tone
[11:16] Speaker 1: to another. the question about our retreat he had asked
[11:23] Speaker 1: as it were quivering all over rolling his eyes and
[11:28] Speaker 1: skipping up so close to alyosha that he instinctively drew
[11:32] Speaker 1: back a step he was dressed in a very shabby
[11:36] Speaker 1: dark cotton coat patched and spotted he wore check trousers
[11:42] Speaker 1: of an extremely light colour long out of fashion and
[11:46] Speaker 1: of very thin material. They were so crumpled and so
[11:51] Speaker 1: short that he looked as though he had grown out
[11:54] Speaker 1: of them like a boy.' I am Alexei Karamazov,' Alyosha
[12:01] Speaker 1: began in reply.' I quite understand that, sir,' the gentleman
[12:07] Speaker 1: snapped out at once, to assure him that he knew
[12:10] Speaker 1: who he was already.' I am Captain Snegirio, sir, but
[12:17] Speaker 1: i am still desirous to know precisely what has led
[12:20] Speaker 1: you oh i've come for nothing special i wanted to
[12:24] Speaker 1: have a word with you if only you allow me
[12:27] Speaker 1: in that case here is a chair sir kindly be
[12:30] Speaker 1: seated that's what they used to say in the old
[12:33] Speaker 1: comedies kindly be seated and with a rapid gesture he
[12:38] Speaker 1: seized an empty chair it was a rough wooden chair
[12:41] Speaker 1: not upholstered and set it for him almost in the
[12:44] Speaker 1: middle of the room Then, taking another similar chair for himself,
[12:49] Speaker 1: he sat down facing Alyosha, so close to him that
[12:53] Speaker 1: their knees almost touched. Nikolai Ilyich Snigiriov, sir, formerly a
[13:01] Speaker 1: captain in the Russian infantry, put to shame for his vices,
[13:04] Speaker 1: but still a captain, though I might not be one
[13:08] Speaker 1: now for the way I talk, for the last half
[13:11] Speaker 1: of my life I've learned to say sir. It's a
[13:14] Speaker 1: word you use when you've come down in the world'
[13:17] Speaker 1: That' s very true,' smiled Alyosha.' But is it used involuntarily
[13:23] Speaker 1: or on purpose?'' Ah, gods above, it's involuntary, and I
[13:28] Speaker 1: usen't to use it.' I didn't use the word sir
[13:31] Speaker 1: all my life,' but as soon as I sank into
[13:34] Speaker 1: low water I began to say sir.' It' s the work
[13:37] Speaker 1: of a higher power.'' I see you are interested in
[13:41] Speaker 1: contemporary questions,' But how can I have excited your curiosity,
[13:47] Speaker 1: living as I do, in surroundings impossible for the exercise
[13:51] Speaker 1: of hospitality? I've come about that business. About what business?
[13:59] Speaker 1: The captain interrupted impatiently. About your meeting with my brother
[14:04] Speaker 1: Dmitri Fyodorovich. Alyosha blurted out awkwardly. What meeting, sir? You
[14:12] Speaker 1: don't mean that meeting? About my wisp of toe, then?
[14:18] Speaker 1: He moved closer, so that his knees positively knocked against Alyosha.
[14:25] Speaker 1: His lips were strangely compressed like a thread. What wisp
[14:30] Speaker 1: of toe? muttered Alyosha. He is come to complain of me, father,
[14:38] Speaker 1: cried a voice familiar to Alyosha, the voice of the schoolboy.
[14:43] Speaker 1: from behind the curtain.' I bit his finger just now.'
[14:48] Speaker 1: The curtain was pulled, and Alyosha saw his assailant lying
[14:53] Speaker 1: on a little bed made up on the bench and
[14:56] Speaker 1: the chair in the corner under the icons. The boy
[15:00] Speaker 1: lay covered by his coat and an old wadded quilt.
[15:05] Speaker 1: He was evidently unwell, and judging by his glittering eyes,
[15:12] Speaker 1: He was in a fever. He looked at Alyosha without fear,
[15:18] Speaker 1: as though he felt he was at home and could
[15:20] Speaker 1: not be touched. What? Did he bite your finger? The
[15:28] Speaker 1: captain jumped up from his chair. Was it your finger
[15:32] Speaker 1: he bit? Yes, he was throwing stones with other schoolboys.
[15:37] Speaker 1: There were six of them against him alone. I went
[15:40] Speaker 1: up to him, and he threw a stone at me,
[15:42] Speaker 1: and then another at my head. I asked him what
[15:45] Speaker 1: I had done to him, and then he rushed at
[15:47] Speaker 1: me and bit my finger badly. I don't know why.
[15:51] Speaker 1: I'll thrash him, sir, at once, this minute. The captain
[15:55] Speaker 1: jumped up from his seat. But I am not complaining
[15:59] Speaker 1: at all. I am simply telling you I don't want
[16:02] Speaker 1: him to be thrashed. Besides, he seems to be ill.
[16:06] Speaker 1: And do you suppose I'd thrash him? that i take
[16:09] Speaker 1: my ilusia and thrash him before you for your satisfaction
[16:14] Speaker 1: would you like it done at once sir said the
[16:17] Speaker 1: captain suddenly turning to aloysia as though he were going
[16:22] Speaker 1: to attack him i am sorry about your finger sir
[16:26] Speaker 1: but instead of thrashing ilusia would you like me to
[16:29] Speaker 1: chop off my forefingers with this knife here before your
[16:32] Speaker 1: eyes to satisfy your just wrath i should think forefingers
[16:37] Speaker 1: would be enough to satisfy your thirst for vengeance you
[16:40] Speaker 1: won't ask for the fifth one too he stopped short
[16:45] Speaker 1: with a catch in his throat every feature in his
[16:48] Speaker 1: face was twitching and working he looked extremely defiant he
[16:52] Speaker 1: was in a sort of frenzy i think i understand
[16:57] Speaker 1: it all now said alyosha gently and sorrowfully still keeping
[17:02] Speaker 1: his seat so your boy is a good boy he
[17:05] Speaker 1: loves his father' and he attacked me as the brother
[17:08] Speaker 1: of your assailant.' Now I understand it,' he repeated thoughtfully.'
[17:13] Speaker 1: But my brother Dmitri Fyodorovich regrets his action, I know that.'
[17:18] Speaker 1: And if only it is possible for him to come
[17:21] Speaker 1: to you,' or better still, to meet you in that
[17:24] Speaker 1: same place,' he will ask your forgiveness before everyone, if
[17:28] Speaker 1: you wish it.'' After pulling out my beard, you mean
[17:33] Speaker 1: he will ask my forgiveness?' and he thinks that will
[17:36] Speaker 1: be a satisfactory finish doesn't he oh no on the
[17:41] Speaker 1: contrary he will do anything you like and in any
[17:44] Speaker 1: way you like so if i were to ask his
[17:48] Speaker 1: highness to go down on his knees before me in
[17:50] Speaker 1: that very tavern the metropolis it's called or in the
[17:54] Speaker 1: market-place he would do it yes he would even go
[17:58] Speaker 1: down on his knees you pierced me to the heart
[18:02] Speaker 1: sir Touched me to tears and pierced me to the heart.
[18:06] Speaker 1: I am only too sensible of your brother's generosity. Allow
[18:12] Speaker 1: me to introduce my family, my two daughters and my son,
[18:17] Speaker 1: my litter. If I die, who will care for them?
[18:20] Speaker 1: And while I live, who but they will care for
[18:23] Speaker 1: a wretch like me? That's a great thing the Lord
[18:26] Speaker 1: has ordained for every man of my sort, sir. For
[18:29] Speaker 1: there must be someone able to love even a man
[18:32] Speaker 1: like me. Ah, that's perfectly true, exclaimed Alyosha. Oh, do
[18:38] Speaker 1: leave off playing the fool. Some idiot comes in and
[18:42] Speaker 1: you put us to shame, cried the girl by the window,
[18:46] Speaker 1: suddenly turning to her father with a disdainful and contemptuous air.
[18:50] Speaker 1: Wait a little, Bavara, cried her father, speaking peremptorily, but
[18:56] Speaker 1: looking at her quite approvingly. That's her character, he said.
[19:02] Speaker 1: addressing Alyosha again, and in all nature there was naught
[19:12] Speaker 1: that could find favour in his eyes, or rather in
[19:20] Speaker 1: the feminine, that could find favour in her eyes. But
[19:25] Speaker 1: now let me present you to my wife, Arina Petrovna.
[19:29] Speaker 1: She is crippled, she is forty-three she can move but
[19:33] Speaker 1: very little she is of humble origin arina petrovna compose
[19:42] Speaker 1: your countenance this is alexey fyodorovitch karamazov get up alexey
[19:51] Speaker 1: fyodorovitch he took him by the hand and with unexpected
[19:56] Speaker 1: force pulled him up you must stand up to be
[20:00] Speaker 1: introduced to a lady it's not the karamazov mamma who
[20:06] Speaker 1: etc but his brother radiant with modest virtues come arina
[20:16] Speaker 1: petrovna come mamma first your hand to be kissed and
[20:22] Speaker 1: he kissed his wife's hand respectfully and even tenderly the
[20:27] Speaker 1: girl at the window turned her back indignantly on the
[20:31] Speaker 1: scene an expression of extraordinary cordiality came over the haughtily
[20:38] Speaker 1: inquiring face of the woman good morning sit down mr
[20:44] Speaker 1: chuch nomazov she said karamazov mamma karamazov we are of
[20:54] Speaker 1: humble origin he whispered again well.
[21:02] Speaker 2: Off or whatever it is but i always think of
[21:07] Speaker 2: churnamos off sit down why has he pulled you up
[21:14] Speaker 2: he calls me crippled but i am not only my
[21:19] Speaker 2: legs are swollen like barrels and i am shrivelled up
[21:23] Speaker 2: myself once i used to be so fat but now
[21:28] Speaker 2: it's as though i had swallowed a needle We are
[21:32] Speaker 2: of humble origin, the captain muttered again. Oh, father, father!
[21:41] Speaker 1: The hunchback girl who had till then been silent on
[21:45] Speaker 1: her chair said suddenly, and she hid her eyes in
[21:48] Speaker 1: her handkerchief. Buffoon! blurted out the girl at the window.
[21:54] Speaker 2: Have you heard our news?
[21:56] Speaker 1: Said the mother, pointing at her daughter's. It's like clouds
[22:01] Speaker 1: coming over. The clouds pass and we have music again.
[22:05] Speaker 1: When we were with the army, we used to have
[22:07] Speaker 1: many such guests. I don't mean to make any comparisons.
[22:12] Speaker 1: Every one to their taste. The deacon's wife used to
[22:15] Speaker 1: come then and say, Alexander Alexandrovich is a man of
[22:20] Speaker 1: the noblest heart, but Nastasya Petrovna, she would say.
[22:25] Speaker 2: Is of the brood of hell.
[22:27] Speaker 1: Oh, well, I said, that's a matter of taste but
[22:30] Speaker 1: you are a little spit-pire and you want keeping in
[22:33] Speaker 1: your place says she you black sword said i who
[22:37] Speaker 1: asked you to teach me but my breath says she
[22:41] Speaker 1: is clean and yours is unclean you ask all the
[22:44] Speaker 1: officers whether my breath is unclean and ever since then
[22:49] Speaker 1: i had it in my mind not long ago i
[22:52] Speaker 1: was sitting here as i am now when i saw
[22:54] Speaker 1: that very general come in who came here for easter
[22:57] Speaker 1: and I asked him your excellency, said I. Can a
[23:01] Speaker 1: lady's breath be unpleasant? Yes, he answered. You ought to
[23:06] Speaker 1: open a window-pane, or open the door, for the air
[23:08] Speaker 1: is not fresh here. And they all go on like that.
[23:12] Speaker 1: And what is my breath to them? The dead smell
[23:14] Speaker 1: worse still. I won't spoil the air, said I. I'll
[23:18] Speaker 1: order some slippers, and go away. My darlings, don't blame
[23:21] Speaker 1: your own mother. Nikolai Ilyich, how is it I can't
[23:25] Speaker 1: please you? there's only ilusha who comes home from school
[23:28] Speaker 1: and loves me yesterday he brought me an apple forgive
[23:32] Speaker 1: your own mother forgive a poor lonely creature why has
[23:35] Speaker 1: my breath become unpleasant to you and the poor mad
[23:39] Speaker 1: woman broke into sobs and tears streamed down her cheeks
[23:43] Speaker 1: the captain rushed up to her mamma mamma my dear
[23:46] Speaker 1: give over you are not lonely everyone loves you everyone
[23:49] Speaker 1: adores you he began kissing both her hands again and
[23:53] Speaker 1: tenderly stroking her face taking the dinner napkin he began
[23:58] Speaker 1: wiping away her tears alyosha fancied that he too had
[24:02] Speaker 1: tears in his eyes there you see you hear he
[24:06] Speaker 1: turned with a sort of fury to alyosha pointing to
[24:09] Speaker 1: the poor imbecile i see and hear muttered alyosha father
[24:15] Speaker 1: father how can you with him let him alone cried
[24:18] Speaker 1: the boy sitting up in his bed and gazing at
[24:21] Speaker 1: his father with glowing eyes do give over fooling showing
[24:26] Speaker 1: off your silly antics which never lead to anything shouted
[24:31] Speaker 1: varvara stamping her foot with passion your anger is quite
[24:35] Speaker 1: just this time varvara and i'll make haste to satisfy
[24:38] Speaker 1: you come put on your cap alexei feodorovitch and i'll
[24:43] Speaker 1: put on mine we will go out i have a
[24:45] Speaker 1: word to say to you in earnest but not within
[24:47] Speaker 1: these walls This girl sitting here is my daughter Nina.
