After months of silence, NSW Police Media Unit finally respond to me about Katie Walker's disappearance - and what they say, and the reason I believe they decided to finally reply, will infuriate you. Australian radio star Kyle Sandilands also backs my investigation and helps me speak to NSW Premier Chris Minns who has now publicly promised to raise this with Police Commissioner of New South Wales. In this episode, I also become emotional while explaining why Katie Walker's story resonates so much with me - and why I won't give up trying to find answers. [0:00] Speaker 1: Welcome back to the disappearance of Katie Walker and welcome
[0:04] Speaker 1: to what feels like one of the most significant updates
[0:07] Speaker 1: since this series began. Unfortunately, it's not an update that
[0:12] Speaker 1: leads us closer to discovering what happened to Katie. But
[0:16] Speaker 1: after months of myself and all of you making sure
[0:19] Speaker 1: that Katie's name and story is not forgotten, while urging
[0:24] Speaker 1: New South Wales police to take this seriously, we are
[0:28] Speaker 1: now finally here.
[0:29] Speaker 2: Getting somewhere.
[0:31] Speaker 1: The police have finally responded to me and earlier this
[0:34] Speaker 1: week I spoke to Chris Minns, the Premier of New
[0:37] Speaker 1: South Wales here in Sydney, about Katie and he has
[0:41] Speaker 1: publicly agreed to look into this. But before I get
[0:44] Speaker 1: to that and how it happened and what I said
[0:47] Speaker 1: to the Premier, I need to take you on the
[0:50] Speaker 1: journey of how I even got to have that communication
[0:53] Speaker 1: and my recent communication with the police and yeah warning
[0:57] Speaker 1: that this story I'm going to take you on now
[0:59] Speaker 1: this journey will once again infuriate you all like it
[1:03] Speaker 1: has me and it proves what I feel I've known
[1:07] Speaker 1: all along and that is that New South Wales police
[1:10] Speaker 1: care more about their own PR than they do about
[1:13] Speaker 1: actually protecting and helping people. Let's go back to September
[1:21] Speaker 1: 17th now, around three weeks ago.
[1:24] Speaker 2: And on that day, I sat here in this studio
[1:27] Speaker 2: in my house.
[1:28] Speaker 1: And I recorded the episode of this podcast that you
[1:31] Speaker 1: will have listened to about how someone had logged into
[1:34] Speaker 1: Katie's Telegram account and was deleting messages and then they
[1:38] Speaker 1: deleted her entire account. And prior to me publishing that episode,
[1:43] Speaker 1: I emailed New South Wales Police Media with this information
[1:46] Speaker 1: about the Telegram account to see if they could provide
[1:49] Speaker 1: me with any statement or guidance, or even if they
[1:52] Speaker 1: could say, hey, this information is pretty major.
[1:55] Speaker 2: Please don't publish this.
[1:56] Speaker 1: We'll pursue this line of inquiry, which I would have
[2:00] Speaker 1: loved because it would mean they're actually investigating finally. Throughout
[2:04] Speaker 1: this podcast, as I have said before, I've emailed New
[2:07] Speaker 1: South Wales Police Media pretty much before I record every
[2:11] Speaker 1: new episode, which has like some new information that I
[2:14] Speaker 1: think they need to look into. And yeah, Yeah, they
[2:17] Speaker 1: just never replied to me. And also Katie's family themselves,
[2:21] Speaker 1: they email the police too whenever we do get new information.
[2:25] Speaker 2: And in the.
[2:26] Speaker 1: Rare times they do get a response, it's usually along
[2:29] Speaker 1: the lines of, sorry, we can't do that.
[2:32] Speaker 2: Sorry, we can't access her bank statements or phone records.
[2:35] Speaker 1: And essentially just like, yeah, sorry, we're not gonna look
[2:38] Speaker 1: into whatever you now want us to look into because
[2:40] Speaker 1: we still believe Katie, like your daughter, your sister, your
[2:44] Speaker 1: loved one walked into the water.
[2:47] Speaker 2: As I've already said multiple times, I've never had a
[2:50] Speaker 2: single response from the police.
[2:52] Speaker 1: And when I say the police, I mean police media,
[2:54] Speaker 1: whose job it is to be the middle person between
[2:57] Speaker 1: media and journalists like myself and the actual police.
[3:01] Speaker 2: On cases like Katie's.
[3:03] Speaker 1: But then, yeah, on September 17th, as I was writing
[3:06] Speaker 1: that email, which again, I thought, what's the point? They're
[3:08] Speaker 1: not going to reply to this. I then thought, actually,
[3:10] Speaker 1: I'm going to do something different here. And I name
[3:14] Speaker 1: dropped someone. And I also did get a bit sassy,
[3:17] Speaker 1: which probably doesn't help my case, but it's just the frustration.
[3:21] Speaker 1: And yeah, after first mentioning in the email about the
[3:24] Speaker 1: Telegram stuff, I then wrote, also, I'm looking for clarity
[3:28] Speaker 1: on the purpose of the police media unit if you
[3:31] Speaker 1: repeatedly ignore media requests like mine. And after that line,
[3:36] Speaker 1: I then wrote, which I believe is the only reason
[3:40] Speaker 1: I got a response, I'll also be discussing the latest
[3:42] Speaker 1: on Katie and what I see as continued police negligence
[3:46] Speaker 1: on Kyle Sanderlands Live.
[3:49] Speaker 2: Best wishes, Josh.
[3:51] Speaker 1: And for you international listeners, Kyle Sanderlands is essentially Australia's
[3:55] Speaker 1: most famous and successful broadcaster and radio host.
[4:00] Speaker 3: Radio shock jock, Kyle Sanderland.
[4:02] Speaker 1: Kyle Sanderland.
[4:03] Speaker 3: Kyle Sanderland. Kyle Sanderland.
[4:05] Speaker 4: Kyle Sanderland.
[4:06] Speaker 1: Kyle Sanderland. He's someone I've previously worked with and I've
[4:11] Speaker 1: known him personally for several years now. And when I
[4:14] Speaker 1: actually started this series and podcast and started looking into Katie,
[4:18] Speaker 1: he was in the middle of a huge legal battle
[4:21] Speaker 1: against the former radio network he worked for and he.
[4:23] Speaker 2: Was off air.
[4:25] Speaker 1: And essentially for several months, he was silenced publicly. So
[4:29] Speaker 1: couldn't really help because he had a lot going on,
[4:32] Speaker 1: which I don't need to go into. If you're Australian,
[4:35] Speaker 1: you know, if you're not Australian, it's irrelevant. But now
[4:39] Speaker 1: like present day, not only does he now have his
[4:42] Speaker 1: own brand new show and access to his microphone and
[4:46] Speaker 1: his audience again, but he's also been across Katie's story
[4:50] Speaker 1: since the start, like on a personal friend level of
[4:53] Speaker 1: me and him speaking.
[4:55] Speaker 2: And he wants to do what he can to help.
[4:58] Speaker 1: And whereas the police obviously just see me as like
[5:01] Speaker 1: some silly little podcaster with no credibility that they can
[5:05] Speaker 1: dismiss and ignore, despite the fact that this podcast has
[5:08] Speaker 1: now had like hundreds of thousands of.
[5:10] Speaker 2: Downloads, they know that when Kyle backs.
[5:14] Speaker 1: Something and is behind something and say something, people, and
[5:18] Speaker 1: a lot of people, listen.
[5:20] Speaker 4: I've been a fan of Kyle for 20 years.
[5:23] Speaker 1: He....
[5:25] Speaker 3: He builds me up when I'm feeling down.
[5:27] Speaker 1: Wake up to listen.
[5:29] Speaker 2: Means everything to me.
[5:31] Speaker 1: Got through some of my darkest days, especially in the
[5:34] Speaker 1: last two years. So yeah, I did name drop Kyle
[5:38] Speaker 1: in that email. And you know what? 44 minutes later,
[5:42] Speaker 1: I finally get a response from New South Wales Police.
[5:48] Speaker 2: Hello, Joshua.
[5:49] Speaker 1: Please find the current statement in relation to the matter below.
[5:53] Speaker 1: As investigations continue, officers from Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command
[5:58] Speaker 1: continue to appeal for information to locate a woman missing
[6:01] Speaker 1: from Double Bay. Kind regards, NSW Police Media. Now the
[6:05] Speaker 1: problem with that response though, and in my opinion, is
[6:10] Speaker 1: it's just a lie. Firstly, they say, as investigations continue,
[6:15] Speaker 1: which I know through Katie's family is not true because
[6:19] Speaker 1: every line of inquiry presented to them they either dismiss
[6:24] Speaker 1: or ignore. Like I am investigating more than they have
[6:29] Speaker 1: ever done. Secondly, in the email, they also say officers
[6:32] Speaker 1: from the Eastern suburbs police area command continue to appeal
[6:36] Speaker 1: for information, which again is just not true because as
[6:40] Speaker 1: of right now, New South Wales police have only ever
[6:43] Speaker 1: issued two appeals about Katie. And the first one was
[6:47] Speaker 1: on June 4th and the second one was then on
[6:50] Speaker 1: June 11th and not a single thing since. There's been
[6:54] Speaker 1: no social media posts from the police, no updates to
[6:57] Speaker 1: their missing persons website. With that initial appeal, there's been
[7:01] Speaker 1: none of the new information we've uncovered on this podcast shared,
[7:05] Speaker 1: which may help the public remember Katie and.
[7:08] Speaker 2: Get new leads.
[7:10] Speaker 1: And yeah, just nothing shared locally with the community and
[7:14] Speaker 1: no officers on TV or radio or doing any media
[7:17] Speaker 1: letting the public know about Katie. There has literally been Nothing.
[7:21] Speaker 1: So when they go, we're still appealing for information. How
[7:25] Speaker 1: are you appealing for information? Where are you appealing for information?
[7:27] Speaker 1: Like that is just utter bullshit. And lastly, they also
[7:31] Speaker 1: actually ended that quote about we continue to appeal for
[7:34] Speaker 1: information by saying to locate a woman missing from Double Bay,
[7:38] Speaker 1: which is just factually incorrect because as I know, and
[7:41] Speaker 1: all of you know, because you're following this case and
[7:43] Speaker 1: know more than the actual police, Katie was living in
[7:46] Speaker 1: Darling Point, not Double Bay. It's the suburb next to it.
[7:50] Speaker 1: And Katie was last seen in Tamarama, not Double Bay.
[7:53] Speaker 1: And Katie's phone later pinged in Bondi, again, not Double Bay.
[7:58] Speaker 1: Like Double Bay in this whole story, unless I'm missing something,
[8:03] Speaker 1: is nothing but a suburb that Katie visited often and
[8:06] Speaker 1: went to for coffees and passed through on that last
[8:09] Speaker 1: day on May 23rd. And as I then responded to
[8:12] Speaker 1: the police saying like, hey- How are you appealing? Where
[8:16] Speaker 1: are you appealing? And what are you actually investigating if
[8:19] Speaker 1: you ignore every lead that I and Casey's family present
[8:22] Speaker 1: to you? And also what is the relevance of Double Bay? Yeah,
[8:26] Speaker 1: then nothing. Haven't had an email since. Now, do you
[8:30] Speaker 1: see what I mean when I said a few minutes
[8:31] Speaker 1: ago in this pod that the only thing it seems
[8:33] Speaker 1: to please care.
[8:34] Speaker 2: About is PR and their own image?
[8:37] Speaker 1: Because yeah, well, after months of silence from me, the mention,
[8:41] Speaker 1: one mention of Kyle, like, you know, one of this
[8:44] Speaker 1: country's most famous men. Suddenly I had a statement within minutes.
[8:47] Speaker 1: And yeah, then when I point out all the errors
[8:50] Speaker 1: in that statement, oh, no, back to silence. The day
[8:53] Speaker 1: after I received that email from the police, I then
[8:55] Speaker 1: quickly recorded what were the next two episodes of this
[8:58] Speaker 1: podcast focusing on Katie's American ex-husband and the human trafficking angle.
[9:03] Speaker 1: And I did them very quickly because I was then
[9:05] Speaker 1: leaving Australia on a trip for just over a week.
[9:09] Speaker 1: And then As soon as I was back, literally my
[9:11] Speaker 1: very first stop as I got back to Sydney was
[9:15] Speaker 1: Kyle's show, Kyle Sanderland's Live, to finally bring all of
[9:18] Speaker 1: his listeners across this story, which is what then led
[9:23] Speaker 1: to my chat with New South Wales Premier Chris Minns.
[9:25] Speaker 2: But first, before that, Kyle.
[9:28] Speaker 3: What do we need to know and how can people
[9:30] Speaker 3: help join the search? Because the police believe this woman
[9:34] Speaker 3: has killed herself, but there is no body and the
[9:37] Speaker 3: family are distraught. And no one seems to care. No
[9:41] Speaker 3: one is looking out for this woman. They just think, oh,
[9:45] Speaker 3: she threw herself or she walked into the water and
[9:48] Speaker 3: floated off. And case closed. Is that right?
[9:51] Speaker 1: Over the next 25 minutes, I brought Kyle up to
[9:54] Speaker 1: date with everything I've covered in this podcast series as
[9:57] Speaker 1: best as I could do in a way that he understands.
[10:00] Speaker 1: the listeners could still kind of understand why the police
[10:03] Speaker 1: theory is incorrect about katie and in her life and
[10:06] Speaker 1: then just like i said in my email earlier to
[10:09] Speaker 1: new south wales police media i would do i then
[10:12] Speaker 1: brought up the police's just negligence in the most public
[10:15] Speaker 1: way possible to again try and put pressure on them
[10:18] Speaker 1: To do something.
[10:20] Speaker 3: But if you're with the family and the neighbors and
[10:22] Speaker 3: you actually put a bit of effort into this, a
[10:24] Speaker 3: lot of effort, the least they could do would be
[10:27] Speaker 3: to reply or communicate. Like, if there's a chance this
[10:32] Speaker 3: woman is alive, then every opportunity should be taken to
[10:36] Speaker 3: make sure she's recovered.
[10:37] Speaker 1: What me and Katie's family want is the police to
[10:40] Speaker 1: start again. Take it off the local Bondi detectives who
[10:43] Speaker 1: approached this as a suicide and in their heads it
[10:46] Speaker 1: feels like They tick boxes to prove it was a
[10:49] Speaker 1: suicide to go case closed.
[10:50] Speaker 3: Oh, Looney Tunes, woman into the woohoo, not doing well.
[10:53] Speaker 3: Start again. Estranged from her family.
[10:56] Speaker 1: And give it to the homicide squad with the serious
[10:58] Speaker 1: crime unit who have the resources.
[11:00] Speaker 3: Because this is international.
[11:02] Speaker 1: They have to do an international investigation because it's more
[11:06] Speaker 1: evident than ever that, again, she did not take a life.
[11:09] Speaker 2: Something has happened to her.
[11:10] Speaker 1: And the more proof we get, it's still why the
[11:13] Speaker 1: police doing nothing.
[11:15] Speaker 3: Well, I don't feel that if the police are doing nothing,
[11:17] Speaker 3: I believe, and I don't know, but I believe at
[11:20] Speaker 3: a guess it would be, they've assumed that this is
[11:23] Speaker 3: a closed case and it's pointless to do anything else.
[11:26] Speaker 3: But they don't have that information that you've had, but
[11:29] Speaker 3: you've given it.
[11:30] Speaker 1: At every step, I email the police media. Police media
[11:33] Speaker 1: is a public service for journalists, tabloids, anyone to say, hey,
[11:37] Speaker 1: have you got a comment on this and updated statement?
[11:39] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[11:40] Speaker 1: Now the police can shut down media and say you're
[11:41] Speaker 1: interfering with an active investigation.
[11:43] Speaker 3: Right.
[11:44] Speaker 1: I would love if they did that because then they're
[11:46] Speaker 1: actually investigating.
[11:46] Speaker 3: Then it's a real active investigation.
[11:48] Speaker 1: Now, everything I go, hey, comment on this, hey, anything
[11:50] Speaker 1: on that, silence. And again, only when I mention, hey,
[11:52] Speaker 1: I'll talk about this on Kyle's show, oh, suddenly here's
[11:55] Speaker 1: a statement that, It.
[11:57] Speaker 3: Was factually incorrect. They sent you a statement that was incorrect?
[12:00] Speaker 1: Yeah, we are still issuing for information and inquiring. Right, right, right.
[12:04] Speaker 3: But they're not really? No, they didn't fuck all.
[12:06] Speaker 1: And it was then that Kyle, who now wanting to help,
[12:09] Speaker 1: actually remembered that the following day, the next day after
[12:12] Speaker 1: we were speaking there, he actually had New South Wales
[12:15] Speaker 1: Premier Chris Minns live in his studio for a chat.
[12:18] Speaker 1: And he promised me on air that he would use
[12:22] Speaker 1: some of that time for that interview to actually ask him,
[12:26] Speaker 1: about Katie and for those of you listening who aren't
[12:28] Speaker 1: from Australia here we basically have like the Prime Minister
[12:32] Speaker 1: who's like you know obviously the equivalent is what the
[12:36] Speaker 1: President in America and the Prime Minister heads up the
[12:38] Speaker 1: federal government and all national issues and then each state
[12:42] Speaker 1: has their own state Premier who leads up the state
[12:45] Speaker 1: governments and ours here in New South Wales where I
[12:48] Speaker 1: live and where Katie disappeared is Chris Minns who amongst
[12:53] Speaker 1: other things is responsible for things like public hospitals, schools,
[12:57] Speaker 1: public transport, and the police. And this is now Kyle
[13:02] Speaker 1: bringing up Katie to Chris Minns the following day.
[13:07] Speaker 3: And as I said earlier, this lady that disappeared from
[13:10] Speaker 3: the eastern suburbs, you probably don't know anything about it
[13:13] Speaker 3: because it hasn't probably been elevated. Josh is the only
[13:17] Speaker 3: person looking for this woman. Her name was Katie Walker,
[13:21] Speaker 3: disappeared on May 23rd in Sydney. Down at, where was it?
[13:25] Speaker 3: One of the beaches? Was it Josh?
[13:27] Speaker 2: She was in Tamarama, Alexander street.
[13:30] Speaker 3: So there's some video footage of this woman. Like she's
[13:33] Speaker 3: all dressed up. She's got the Versace bag, the high heels.
[13:36] Speaker 3: She's into the woo woo. So she's like one of
[13:38] Speaker 3: those sort of free spirited elder, older divorce ladies with
[13:42] Speaker 3: kids came back to Australia from America to, because her
[13:48] Speaker 3: second relationship failed and she wanted to come back and
[13:51] Speaker 3: rebuild the relationship with their children and, She was full
[13:53] Speaker 3: of regret and like, I'm going to come back and
[13:56] Speaker 3: devote everything to my kids. She just disappeared one day,
[13:59] Speaker 3: never to be heard from again. And Josh is looking
[14:02] Speaker 3: into it on behalf of the family because the family
[14:04] Speaker 3: were dealing with the police and the police came to
[14:07] Speaker 3: the conclusion that she'd probably taken her own life. Yet
[14:10] Speaker 3: there's no body. There's no bags. There's no evidence and
[14:13] Speaker 3: there's sunglasses left behind. She's just gone and case is closed.
[14:18] Speaker 3: And the family believed that that, she may have fallen
[14:21] Speaker 3: victim to people trafficking. Yes. So how does, yeah, you've
[14:26] Speaker 3: had problems with dealing with the police. Yes. Because like
[14:29] Speaker 3: once they've closed the case, you can't just let every
[14:32] Speaker 3: time someone rings up to go, hey, open the case again.
[14:34] Speaker 2: So this lady, she went missing.
[14:36] Speaker 1: It was a Saturday afternoon, like one block from Bondi
[14:39] Speaker 1: to Coogee Walk, which we know is the busiest walk
[14:41] Speaker 1: in Sydney.
[14:41] Speaker 3: Very busy. You've been down there?
[14:43] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[14:43] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[14:44] Speaker 1: And they have kind of come to this conclusion, hey,
[14:46] Speaker 1: she's vanished near the water. She's going through like a
[14:49] Speaker 1: rocky time of her life. She was feeling a bit
[14:51] Speaker 1: alone and they feel they've got evidence to suggest she
[14:53] Speaker 1: walked into the water, but like nobody's seen it. And
[14:57] Speaker 1: then I've uncovered all this continual evidence, which disproves this
[15:01] Speaker 1: theory continually.
[15:01] Speaker 3: Like your phone turned on like a week later, another
[15:04] Speaker 3: event turned off.
[15:04] Speaker 2: This was this year.
[15:05] Speaker 3: May 25. May of this year.
[15:07] Speaker 1: And I sent, I think, seven, eight emails to police
[15:09] Speaker 1: media with all this evidence, which I'm unfolding in a
[15:12] Speaker 1: podcast as I dig deeper. And I just have had
[15:15] Speaker 1: no response continually. Then there's just all these. elements to
[15:20] Speaker 1: this story which it makes it weird she didn't take
[15:22] Speaker 1: her life everybody who knows her that that's not the
[15:24] Speaker 1: headspace she was in she's not the type of person
[15:26] Speaker 1: to do that she was here to rebuild the life
[15:28] Speaker 1: connect to her children and all we like me and
[15:31] Speaker 1: the family are trying to do is to get new
[15:33] Speaker 1: south wales police to take it from the local bondi
[15:36] Speaker 1: detectives and start again because what we've uncovered is there's
[15:40] Speaker 1: something bigger here and even two weeks ago as we
[15:43] Speaker 1: start to talk about these men in Dubai that Katie
[15:47] Speaker 1: said were following her to Australia, suddenly someone's logging into
[15:51] Speaker 1: her accounts, which have been inactive since she went missing.
[15:53] Speaker 1: And they're deleting messages about these men and wiping her accounts.
[15:57] Speaker 3: Is that enough for the police to relook at something?
[15:59] Speaker 3: I know you, you got the police under your, under
[16:02] Speaker 3: your sort of, um, area of expertise. And, you know,
[16:07] Speaker 3: as I said, you can't just make every phone call.
[16:09] Speaker 3: The police have to drop everything and follow that up.
[16:11] Speaker 3: But that does feel like there's a little bit more
[16:13] Speaker 3: to the story there that the police may not be
[16:14] Speaker 3: aware of.
[16:15] Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, I must admit, I don't know the story,
[16:17] Speaker 1: but maybe can you get me more information?
[16:20] Speaker 3: And we've got a fantastic police commissioner and police minister
[16:23] Speaker 3: in the state. I agree, yeah. Mel's amazing. Very good.
[16:26] Speaker 2: Josh, get me the details and I'll have a look into.
[16:28] Speaker 3: It for sure.
[16:29] Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you.
[16:29] Speaker 3: I'll send them over. Particularly if the family's worried or upset.
[16:32] Speaker 3: They're beside themselves. Of course. They don't know whether the
[16:34] Speaker 3: mum's alive, dead. Trafficked somewhere. Yeah. Even if she's dead,
[16:39] Speaker 3: they just would like to know. Yeah, of course. I
[16:42] Speaker 3: can't imagine anything worse. Oh, it's shocking, right? Even if
[16:45] Speaker 3: I lose mum at Woolies, I'd think the worst for
[16:47] Speaker 3: a second. I'd panic if I don't see her. Yeah,
[16:49] Speaker 3: of course.
[16:50] Speaker 1: Listening back to that grab there and me speaking to
[16:53] Speaker 1: Chris Minns, the Premier, I can hear like a wobble
[16:57] Speaker 1: in my voice and that's nerves creeping in because like
[17:02] Speaker 1: I felt this odd pressure not to ruin– that moment,
[17:06] Speaker 1: the moment like it feels I've been trying to get
[17:10] Speaker 1: for months. But yeah, there you have it, a promise
[17:13] Speaker 1: publicly from the most powerful man in this state that
[17:17] Speaker 1: he is going to at least try to help.
[17:20] Speaker 2: And like as happy as I am about this, I'm.
[17:23] Speaker 1: Also still so just fucking annoyed that it took this
[17:27] Speaker 1: like months of me and Lucas from Proof Investigations and
[17:31] Speaker 1: Katie's family back in the UK all doing our own
[17:34] Speaker 1: investigations together and digging and everything we can to find
[17:38] Speaker 1: answers while sharing everything as widely as we can on
[17:41] Speaker 1: this podcast in the hope of what getting enough public
[17:45] Speaker 1: support that it would finally make the police do some
[17:48] Speaker 1: policing and like let's be honest we've been doing that
[17:51] Speaker 1: for three months now through this podcast and it wasn't
[17:54] Speaker 1: enough it hasn't been enough and it hasn't made the
[17:56] Speaker 1: police do anything like in my head as much as
[18:00] Speaker 1: it pains me to admit I have failed in what
[18:03] Speaker 1: I set out to do which was months ago when
[18:05] Speaker 1: what I thought would be one post about this missing
[18:08] Speaker 1: woman turned into a little series that I thought would
[18:13] Speaker 1: you know definitely make the police take notice they they
[18:16] Speaker 1: hadn't they haven't or they have and they've still chose
[18:19] Speaker 1: to do nothing but yeah like when in reality all
[18:25] Speaker 1: I suppose I actually had to do was name drop
[18:29] Speaker 1: the most famous person I know, get them involved, which
[18:33] Speaker 1: I hate doing, and then have that famous person use
[18:37] Speaker 1: his kind of power and connection to the premiere on
[18:41] Speaker 1: his own public forum to actually get us to this point.
[18:45] Speaker 2: And like, yeah, it's.
[18:46] Speaker 1: Great that we're here and I'm so happy we are,
[18:49] Speaker 1: but it's just frustrating. And during my live sit down
[18:53] Speaker 1: with Kyle, like the first one where I told Katie's
[18:56] Speaker 1: full story again I'm so happy Kyle allowed me to
[19:00] Speaker 1: do that and gave me so much time on his
[19:02] Speaker 1: show to get Katie's story out to more people than
[19:05] Speaker 1: I've personally been able to I remember just sitting there
[19:09] Speaker 1: like while it was live and realizing in real time
[19:12] Speaker 1: like why has it even come to this why do
[19:17] Speaker 1: we almost need to beg the police to actually do
[19:20] Speaker 1: some policing.
[19:22] Speaker 3: And this family of this woman they must be They
[19:25] Speaker 3: must be very happy that someone like you has come
[19:27] Speaker 3: along to sort of force the police to put their
[19:30] Speaker 3: eyes back on this case.
[19:32] Speaker 1: Yeah, they're just happy someone cares. I mean, I never
[19:35] Speaker 1: met Katie, but I now feel I know her so
[19:37] Speaker 1: well because for the last three, four months of my life,
[19:39] Speaker 1: every day I am thinking about her pursuing things.
[19:43] Speaker 3: I remember you talking to me about this woman when
[19:44] Speaker 3: we first started this.
[19:45] Speaker 1: That was months ago when we started making the documentary.
[19:47] Speaker 3: And I said, yeah, what have you been doing? You're like, oh,
[19:49] Speaker 3: I've been talking. following this Katie woman. I was like,
[19:51] Speaker 3: what's that going on there? And it was right at
[19:53] Speaker 3: the beginning. And you were like, you were like, something's
[19:56] Speaker 3: off here. I can smell it. I can feel it.
[19:59] Speaker 3: And you're not a guy that runs around looking for
[20:01] Speaker 3: pretend problems. No. You're quite a sensible fella, apart from
[20:05] Speaker 3: the sex addict stuff.
[20:06] Speaker 1: The frustrating thing is, again, we say the police are under-resourced,
[20:09] Speaker 1: but it shouldn't take someone like me having months of
[20:12] Speaker 1: my life and my time to my own detriment, to
[20:15] Speaker 1: be honest. I'm now being told from the PI, hey,
[20:17] Speaker 1: kind of watch your back because people are reacting to
[20:20] Speaker 1: my content, which someone has done something bad and they're
[20:24] Speaker 1: in Australia.
[20:24] Speaker 3: If there's a nefarious person involved in this, you could
[20:28] Speaker 3: put a target on your own self.
[20:29] Speaker 2: Yeah, it's being very brave.
[20:30] Speaker 1: I'm the one pushing their hand, to be honest. But
[20:33] Speaker 1: if I didn't, then no one's ever going to get
[20:35] Speaker 1: any answers. But again, it just circles back to why
[20:38] Speaker 1: does it take someone like me or anyone out there?
[20:41] Speaker 1: What are the police doing?
[20:42] Speaker 3: You have a job. Someone's gone missing. Actually investigate.
[20:45] Speaker 1: Mary Madigan, the newsreader on Kyle's show, who I think
[20:49] Speaker 1: is incredible, then actually joined the discussion on Katie during
[20:52] Speaker 1: that first live chat. And she brought up an even
[20:55] Speaker 1: sadder fact, which I suppose I'd never really thought about
[20:59] Speaker 1: until that moment.
[21:00] Speaker 2: But it is so true.
[21:02] Speaker 4: I think it's so easy though to dismiss a woman
[21:05] Speaker 4: as like a crazy, unpredictable lady, you know?
[21:08] Speaker 3: Yeah, that's not fair. I don't like that.
[21:10] Speaker 4: I think so. I always think when something really goes
[21:12] Speaker 4: wrong for you, whether it's sick or there's crime or whatever,
[21:15] Speaker 4: you literally need an advocate.
[21:17] Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely.
[21:18] Speaker 4: Like whether it's dealing with doctors or it's dealing with,
[21:21] Speaker 4: crime or it's dealing with a missing person and you
[21:22] Speaker 4: have become her advocate do I think that's right no
[21:25] Speaker 4: you shouldn't have to be but I I think that
[21:26] Speaker 4: is the reality of this.
[21:27] Speaker 1: Country right and Mary is so right that like in
[21:30] Speaker 1: society women are so easily just disregarded and ignored and
[21:35] Speaker 1: like you know oh she's acting erratic it must be
[21:39] Speaker 1: or is it the time of the month or is
[21:41] Speaker 1: it menopause like it's just things are so easily dismissed
[21:44] Speaker 1: and it's fucking infuriating and So I don't have a
[21:49] Speaker 1: script for this part of the podcast. It's just, this
[21:53] Speaker 1: now feels like it's becoming like a bigger thing than
[21:55] Speaker 1: just Katie. That's obviously the primary focus, but it's highlighting
[21:58] Speaker 1: all these other issues across broader society. And also just
[22:03] Speaker 1: me thinking during that first interview with Kyle sitting there thinking,
[22:06] Speaker 1: how privileged are all of us in that room? Like
[22:09] Speaker 1: I know if I was to go missing tomorrow, it
[22:13] Speaker 1: wouldn't be ignored because well, across my pages, I have,
[22:18] Speaker 1: a few hundred thousand followers and I'm attached to like
[22:20] Speaker 1: some famous people and famous friends so therefore it's a
[22:24] Speaker 1: it's a sexy appealing story to the media and I.
[22:28] Speaker 2: Suppose the police would.
[22:30] Speaker 1: Not want to make it seem like they're doing nothing
[22:33] Speaker 1: and you know similar like if Kyle went missing god
[22:35] Speaker 1: they would do everything no stone would be left unturned
[22:39] Speaker 1: and even like you know Mary speaking there She's a
[22:42] Speaker 1: prominent female newsreader and journalist with a media profile. So again,
[22:47] Speaker 1: if she went missing, everything would be done to try
[22:51] Speaker 1: and find her because a lot more people would be
[22:54] Speaker 1: talking about it. But then, you know, for Katie, she
[22:57] Speaker 1: doesn't have these high profile friends or connections here in Australia.
[23:01] Speaker 1: And she was essentially a, this sounds horrible to say,
[23:04] Speaker 1: but in the eyes of the police, a nobody. She
[23:07] Speaker 1: was just a regular person, which like it pains me
[23:12] Speaker 1: to say that, but it's true. One thing I haven't
[23:15] Speaker 1: really shared in this series so far, mostly because this
[23:19] Speaker 1: series is not about me, it's about Katie, but it's
[23:22] Speaker 1: why I have invested like so much time into this
[23:26] Speaker 1: and why I like won't just move on.
[23:32] Speaker 3: But that's the sort of person you are. You don't like–
[23:36] Speaker 3: And I've known you for many years. You don't, and
[23:38] Speaker 3: you've had quite the life. You do really care about people.
[23:41] Speaker 3: Like you've always been a righteous person. That's why I
[23:45] Speaker 3: listened to you when you said that you were very
[23:47] Speaker 3: interested in this particular story. Cause you're not a fantasy chaser. You, you,
[23:52] Speaker 3: you're a factual guy. You like stats, you like figures,
[23:56] Speaker 3: you like, you like to see proof yes or no
[24:00] Speaker 3: in front of you. Like, and a lot of people
[24:01] Speaker 3: like me, I'll just take anything I read or I
[24:04] Speaker 3: see on the news and And I know most of
[24:05] Speaker 3: it's bullshit, but I'll still be tricked. But, oh, yeah,
[24:08] Speaker 3: there's nothing to see here. I'll think, oh, well, there's
[24:11] Speaker 3: nothing to see there. But more often there is.
[24:13] Speaker 1: I think I care too much, which is my problem.
[24:16] Speaker 1: Like it consumes me, which is like trying to find
[24:19] Speaker 1: a balance with that.
[24:20] Speaker 3: Yeah, but if you weren't being consumed by this, then
[24:23] Speaker 3: no one would be looking for this woman.
[24:25] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[24:26] Speaker 3: No one. Even her own family. What can they do?
[24:29] Speaker 3: They ring the police. They go, oh, yeah, shut. We
[24:31] Speaker 3: think your mother's killed herself. That would be very hard
[24:35] Speaker 3: to hear if you didn't believe that, if you were
[24:37] Speaker 3: that woman's family.
[24:38] Speaker 1: In many ways, I relate to Katie and, you know,
[24:42] Speaker 1: we're both British. We're both creatives that have left our
[24:47] Speaker 1: families and our home countries in search of something better
[24:52] Speaker 1: or like, I don't know, and like kind of in
[24:54] Speaker 1: search of saving in a way.
[24:55] Speaker 2: And we've both struggled.
[24:57] Speaker 1: And whereas Katie arrived back in Australia in February determined
[25:01] Speaker 1: that to have this fresh start and reconnect with her children.
[25:04] Speaker 1: I suppose this is now where our stories differ because
[25:08] Speaker 1: when I first came to Australia in 2017, I actually
[25:14] Speaker 1: came here to end my life. And I was 24
[25:18] Speaker 1: then and I'd spent years struggling with depression while desperately
[25:24] Speaker 1: searching for a way out of that and some joy.
[25:27] Speaker 1: Like I've recently understood Katie kind of did as she
[25:30] Speaker 1: ventured into the world of retreats and healing, just searching
[25:34] Speaker 1: for that something more. And prior to me coming to Australia,
[25:40] Speaker 1: I unsuccessfully did attempt to.
[25:43] Speaker 3: End my own life.
[25:44] Speaker 2: And when that didn't work, instead of.
[25:47] Speaker 1: Dealing with things, I saw the concern that I was
[25:53] Speaker 1: instilling in my family and friends, and I just sold
[25:57] Speaker 1: everything I had. I packed a bag and I left
[26:02] Speaker 1: and I went as far away as possible. And I
[26:05] Speaker 1: isolated myself so much because I thought that if I
[26:10] Speaker 1: did that, when I tried again, it wouldn't then hurt
[26:13] Speaker 1: my family as much as by that point, I would
[26:17] Speaker 1: be nothing but a distant memory to them by that point.
[26:20] Speaker 1: And I can tell you from being in that mindset
[26:25] Speaker 1: where you see no way out and you do not
[26:27] Speaker 1: want to live another day, you're not doing any of
[26:31] Speaker 1: the things Katie was in those final weeks that you just,
[26:35] Speaker 1: and you just do not have the motivation that she
[26:38] Speaker 1: had at that time to make Sydney her new home.
[26:42] Speaker 1: Like you're not planting seeds. You're not reaching out to friends,
[26:46] Speaker 1: getting them to send money to you to help you
[26:49] Speaker 1: get set up. You're not phoning the flight center while
[26:52] Speaker 1: making plans to get your long-term visa sorted and doing
[26:56] Speaker 1: all of these things that Katie did in those final
[26:58] Speaker 1: weeks and days in May. And, you know, of course,
[27:02] Speaker 1: everyone is different and there's no checklist for ending your
[27:06] Speaker 1: own life. You know, there's no single way a person thinks,
[27:10] Speaker 1: behaves or even says goodbye. But when I continually say
[27:15] Speaker 1: in this series that I don't believe Katie is ended
[27:18] Speaker 1: her own life I'm not just basing that on like
[27:21] Speaker 1: everything you've heard in this series from the people who
[27:24] Speaker 1: knew her and loved her and what they've told me
[27:26] Speaker 1: and what we've established about Katie was building here in
[27:29] Speaker 1: Sydney but I'm also saying that as someone who knows
[27:33] Speaker 1: what it feels like to reach the darkest place that
[27:37] Speaker 1: you know the police are so convinced Katie was in
[27:39] Speaker 1: and when you are there like trust me I'm telling
[27:41] Speaker 1: you your world, it just becomes so incredibly small and
[27:47] Speaker 1: all you can see is the end of the road.
[27:50] Speaker 1: But everything we have learned about Katie, like over the
[27:55] Speaker 1: last three months, it points in the opposite direction. She
[27:58] Speaker 1: wasn't standing at the end of the road. She had
[28:01] Speaker 1: kind of just stepped onto a new one, like a
[28:03] Speaker 1: new city, a new home. She was making new friendships.
[28:06] Speaker 1: That lovely woman I spoke to maybe two months ago
[28:09] Speaker 1: now who I, spoke about on here, and Katie, you know,
[28:13] Speaker 1: plans were being made, a new life was taking shape,
[28:16] Speaker 1: and there was so much road fucking stretching out in
[28:20] Speaker 1: front of her, and then suddenly Katie vanished from it,
[28:25] Speaker 1: and back in that, sorry, I'm getting upset, and back
[28:30] Speaker 1: in that dark time, like, when I landed in Australia,
[28:32] Speaker 1: which I don't like talking about, but hopefully context kind
[28:36] Speaker 1: of makes sense why I'm so invested in this, but, like,
[28:39] Speaker 1: I came here, as I said, I landed, I was
[28:41] Speaker 1: more certain than ever that my existence had days left.
[28:45] Speaker 1: And I then ended up meeting two people who helped
[28:50] Speaker 1: me find the light again gradually. And they stayed with
[28:53] Speaker 1: me when I was at my worst. And they believed
[28:56] Speaker 1: that there was still like a road ahead of me
[28:58] Speaker 1: that I couldn't see for myself. And in many ways,
[29:02] Speaker 1: they saved me. And without them, I am fairly certain
[29:07] Speaker 1: I would not be sitting here today recording this, and
[29:10] Speaker 1: those friends who are now lifelong friends, they didn't give
[29:14] Speaker 1: up on me when I had given up on myself,
[29:17] Speaker 1: and I think that is why this case has become
[29:20] Speaker 1: so deeply personal for me, because Katie isn't here to
[29:24] Speaker 1: tell us what happened on May 23rd, and she isn't
[29:26] Speaker 1: here to demand answers, and she isn't here to ask
[29:30] Speaker 1: why more isn't.
[29:31] Speaker 3: Being done, so.
[29:34] Speaker 1: Which is why the people who love her have to
[29:36] Speaker 1: keep asking, but no one is listening to them.
[29:38] Speaker 2: And that's why I'm asking too.
[29:40] Speaker 1: And trying to use this platform and and any connections
[29:43] Speaker 1: I have to echo these questions because back then as
[29:48] Speaker 1: I said those friends I made they refused to give
[29:52] Speaker 1: up on me and I suppose now I refuse to
[29:56] Speaker 1: give up on Katie
