[0:00] Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to a breaking news episode of the
[0:03] Speaker 1: Maths Funny podcast where the current investigation from Safe Work
[0:08] Speaker 1: New South Wales, the findings of that have now been
[0:10] Speaker 1: published by the Sydney Morning Herald and yeah, this is
[0:15] Speaker 1: quite serious to be honest. Earlier this week you may
[0:18] Speaker 1: have seen I published on the Mass Puny podcast Facebook
[0:21] Speaker 1: that Safe Work New South Wales had confirmed they'd issued
[0:25] Speaker 1: free notices of improvement from their findings which kind of
[0:30] Speaker 1: related to managing the physical and psychosocial hazards on set
[0:36] Speaker 1: of the show. And this matter was recently discussed in
[0:40] Speaker 1: New South Wales Parliament by MP make Latham, and Make
[0:45] Speaker 1: said Safe Work New South Wales will still continue to
[0:48] Speaker 1: monitor production going forward. But now the Sydney Morning Herold
[0:52] Speaker 1: have obtained the actual documents from Safe Work New South
[0:56] Speaker 1: Wales about these things that need improving and they've done
[0:59] Speaker 1: this under the free of information law and these are
[1:02] Speaker 1: the points that they have found. And I'm just going
[1:06] Speaker 1: to read from the press now because i want to
[1:08] Speaker 1: make sure this is right. So firstly, they say a
[1:10] Speaker 1: situation report described the allegations of violence and aggression by
[1:15] Speaker 1: producers and grooms of the show, including non consensual touching
[1:20] Speaker 1: by a groom. The article then goes on in one
[1:22] Speaker 1: incident revealed in the documents, a bride alleged being filmed
[1:26] Speaker 1: while showering without her knowledge or consent, and other participants
[1:31] Speaker 1: complained of a general lack of privacy, including production staff
[1:35] Speaker 1: having keys to their apartments to access at any time
[1:38] Speaker 1: and not allowing the cast to remove their microphones while
[1:41] Speaker 1: using the bathroom, which that point is actually quite interesting
[1:45] Speaker 1: because they can't actually deny that one because this year
[1:49] Speaker 1: they just used the audio, like on the stint After show,
[1:52] Speaker 1: like every time someone went to the toilet whenever and
[1:54] Speaker 1: thought they were safe and they were a bitching nah,
[1:57] Speaker 1: they just use the audio. And then the article then
[1:59] Speaker 1: go on to say participants told Safe Work New South
[2:03] Speaker 1: Wales they were threatened and intimidated if they tried to
[2:06] Speaker 1: leave the production or when they asked not to be
[2:09] Speaker 1: filmed if they were too unwell. At least one participant
[2:13] Speaker 1: accused film crews of physically blocking exits to prevent the
[2:16] Speaker 1: cast from leaving. Other allegations include extremely long filming hours
[2:21] Speaker 1: with just six or seven hours break between shoots, being
[2:25] Speaker 1: confined to apartments under curfew, and banned from speaking to
[2:29] Speaker 1: other participants and being and I quote dated and harassed
[2:34] Speaker 1: by producers to encourage emotional responses. Safe Work New South
[2:38] Speaker 1: Wales have now ordered production to improve reporting of notifiable incidents,
[2:43] Speaker 1: systems to manage physical and psychosocial hazards and work health
[2:48] Speaker 1: and safety training. The articles then have to state there
[2:51] Speaker 1: is no suggestion the claims are true, only that they
[2:54] Speaker 1: have been alleged and reported and part of this investigation.
[2:58] Speaker 1: And A nine Entertainment spokesperson says when it comes to
[3:01] Speaker 1: the health, wellbeing and safety of participants, our approach is
[3:05] Speaker 1: not a set and forget. We are continually looking at
[3:08] Speaker 1: ways we can improve our process and support. At the
[3:11] Speaker 1: end of each season we review and make a distance
[3:13] Speaker 1: where needed. We cooperated with Safe Work New South Wales
[3:17] Speaker 1: inquiries two nine and we'll continue to do so as required.
[3:21] Speaker 1: Now a couple of points from me on that quote. Firstly, lol,
[3:26] Speaker 1: what a load of shit. Yes, you can say that
[3:29] Speaker 1: it reads great, but my view of someone on the
[3:32] Speaker 1: side talking about this show and documenting it and you'll
[3:34] Speaker 1: all I assume feel the same, is how can they
[3:38] Speaker 1: say every year they're improving and changing things when every
[3:40] Speaker 1: year the cast come out with the same complaints of
[3:44] Speaker 1: these unreasonable work hours, being pushed and pressured by production
[3:48] Speaker 1: being totally can't leave. All these things that year in
[3:51] Speaker 1: year out is being said. Even this last season, which
[3:55] Speaker 1: we've just watched. I know that. I think after the
[3:58] Speaker 1: first dinner party, one of the big bosses basically stopped
[4:01] Speaker 1: everyone who says, this is boring, this is shit, Telly.
[4:05] Speaker 1: No one's leaving until you give us something. Multiple people
[4:09] Speaker 1: have told me that, and then what happened after that.
[4:12] Speaker 1: So the second week dinner party, which was you know,
[4:15] Speaker 1: described as the most brutal, intense bullying one in the
[4:18] Speaker 1: history of this show, like that also comes into play
[4:21] Speaker 1: of why it was so extreme at as far as
[4:24] Speaker 1: I'm told. So when nine are saying, like when it
[4:26] Speaker 1: comes to this that we do all this, like yeah, fair,
[4:28] Speaker 1: you can say that, and you can think you do that,
[4:30] Speaker 1: but nine, are you there on set every day? Because
[4:35] Speaker 1: I don't think you are. I could rant about this
[4:37] Speaker 1: for a long time, but I won't, and I'll just
[4:39] Speaker 1: go back to what I've been saying so long now,
[4:43] Speaker 1: which is just you don't have to push these people
[4:45] Speaker 1: so hard to make good entertaining television, Like you don't
[4:48] Speaker 1: need to exploit people to get that result, like, just
[4:51] Speaker 1: scale it back, listen to what they're saying, and don't
[4:55] Speaker 1: come out with just endless bullshit statements instead of actually
[4:58] Speaker 1: just going, oh, maybe we're should change a few things,
[5:01] Speaker 1: like instead of doing the bare minimum, which it feels
[5:03] Speaker 1: like you have. That's my opinion, maybe nine or right.
[5:05] Speaker 1: Maybe they are making all these changes, it's just we're
[5:09] Speaker 1: not aware, and no cast member seems to be aware
[5:11] Speaker 1: when they come out with their complaints. Also, last point,
[5:14] Speaker 1: none of this has anything to do with the UK stuff.
[5:17] Speaker 1: As I previously mentioned, that's its own investigation into another
[5:21] Speaker 1: production company on the other side of the world. But
[5:24] Speaker 1: what does this mean for the future of Maths Australia Again,
[5:27] Speaker 1: to be honest, probably nothing. The show's still going to
[5:29] Speaker 1: carry on, nothing's going to stop it. They'll just say
[5:33] Speaker 1: they've changed a few things and take a few more
[5:36] Speaker 1: boxes when it comes to film in the next one,
[5:37] Speaker 1: and maybe employ a few extra therapists. Are someone to
[5:41] Speaker 1: stand on the side and say, look, no, we're not
[5:43] Speaker 1: doing that because we've got free therapists in the corner.
[5:46] Speaker 1: But trust me, next season we'll just be as hectic,
[5:49] Speaker 1: as extreme, as explosive as the one we've just watched.
[5:52] Speaker 1: Next year's cast will come out and they call the
[5:54] Speaker 1: same complaints every other year's cast have done safe working
[5:57] Speaker 1: with Southwall as well. Then do another investigation and we'll
[6:00] Speaker 1: do another statement disputing that, and it's just going to
[6:03] Speaker 1: go on and on and on and on and on
[6:05] Speaker 1: until we the viewers stop watching by the million, and
[6:08] Speaker 1: therefore the brand stop paying by the million to advertise
[6:12] Speaker 1: on there. Say yeah,
