Several weeks ago now, NSW Police informed Katie Walker’s family of a new discovery in her apartment which they believe backs their theory that she ended her life – but when questioned further on this, the police did not respond. Meanwhile, a friend of Katie’s in America details how in April and May she was convinced she was being followed by multiple men. The updated picture in the artwork for this episode is a screenshot this friend took during a FaceTime with Katie as she claimed to see one of the men she believed was following her. [0:00] Speaker 1: Trigger warning, some listeners may find this episode distressing. This
[0:06] Speaker 1: is a real story about a real person that's unfolding
[0:10] Speaker 1: in real time. Over the last few weeks, there's been
[0:14] Speaker 1: a significant new development in the disappearance of Katie Walker.
[0:19] Speaker 1: A rope. A rope that, according to Katie's family, was
[0:24] Speaker 1: only mentioned to them by the police several weeks ago now.
[0:28] Speaker 1: which was months into this investigation after months of their
[0:31] Speaker 1: growing frustration saying Katie did not end her life and
[0:35] Speaker 1: something more sinister is at play here. And a rope
[0:39] Speaker 1: whose discovery circumstances and connection to Katie, her family tell
[0:45] Speaker 1: me have just left them more confused than ever. But
[0:49] Speaker 1: this rope it's now in the eyes of new South
[0:52] Speaker 1: Wales police become more proof to them that she did
[0:58] Speaker 1: died by suicide. When you look at this new discovery,
[1:02] Speaker 1: and I'll get into the details of the rope in
[1:04] Speaker 1: a moment, when you look at that alongside the new
[1:07] Speaker 1: information that we have from our own investigation, and this
[1:12] Speaker 1: is information that came directly from Katie's mouth in a
[1:16] Speaker 1: distressing FaceTime call weeks before her disappearance, and I've included
[1:20] Speaker 1: screenshots of that FaceTime call in the artwork for this
[1:24] Speaker 1: episode so you can see the fear in Katie's eyes.
[1:29] Speaker 1: And that, again, will make sense in a few moments
[1:31] Speaker 1: when I get into that. But yes, the rope next
[1:35] Speaker 1: to our information suddenly feels potentially like it was planted.
[1:42] Speaker 1: Several weeks ago now, New South Wales police told Katie's
[1:46] Speaker 1: family that they discovered a rope under the sink in
[1:49] Speaker 1: her rental apartment in Darling Point in Sydney. And in
[1:53] Speaker 1: a message, they wrote... There was also a rope about
[1:57] Speaker 1: 10 meters in length located under the kitchen sink at
[2:00] Speaker 1: the residence in Darling Point Katie was staying at prior
[2:04] Speaker 1: to her disappearance. Inquiries with real estate confirmed this rope
[2:08] Speaker 1: was not there prior to Katie living there. It was
[2:11] Speaker 1: an unusual location for the rope to be. It is
[2:15] Speaker 1: believed Katie may have purchased the rope with consideration to
[2:19] Speaker 1: harm herself with it. Now you'll know in that message there, again,
[2:23] Speaker 1: the police's words, they say it is believed and they
[2:28] Speaker 1: say Katie may have purchased it with the consideration to
[2:32] Speaker 1: harm herself. There are no actual facts there, just assumptions.
[2:37] Speaker 1: And when asked by Katie's family, like when was this
[2:40] Speaker 1: rope discovered and why are you only just telling us
[2:43] Speaker 1: about it now? New South Wales police did not offer
[2:47] Speaker 1: any more information and information Several weeks have now passed
[2:51] Speaker 1: and they haven't replied. But the insinuation here by the
[2:55] Speaker 1: police is that Katie bought the rope herself while thinking
[2:59] Speaker 1: about using it to hang herself, which to them, you know,
[3:03] Speaker 1: proves this theory that, hey, she was suicidal. But it
[3:07] Speaker 1: also goes against their separate suggestion that she subsequently was
[3:12] Speaker 1: always planning to walk into the water. And, you know,
[3:16] Speaker 1: people can change their minds and intentions. I'm not suggesting otherwise.
[3:20] Speaker 1: But remember the police, up until they tracked Katie via
[3:24] Speaker 1: CCTV to that final sighting in Tamarama, they also briefly
[3:28] Speaker 1: suggested to her family that she was going to go
[3:31] Speaker 1: to a well-known suicide spot, The Gap. And they came
[3:35] Speaker 1: to that conclusion simply because whilst tracking her on the cameras,
[3:39] Speaker 1: they saw her pacing on a street in Double Bay
[3:42] Speaker 1: near a bus stop where one of the buses from
[3:44] Speaker 1: that bus stop goes all the way through the eastern
[3:47] Speaker 1: suburbs and through Vaucluse, down to Watson's Bay. And in
[3:50] Speaker 1: Watson's Bay, the final stop is where the gap is. Again,
[3:55] Speaker 1: no actual facts there. They just had an assumption. Well,
[3:58] Speaker 1: Katie was by the bus stop and one of the
[4:00] Speaker 1: stops from the buses there is a suicide spot. Do
[4:03] Speaker 1: you know what I mean? Everything is assumptions. The police
[4:07] Speaker 1: also came to this conclusion that Katie chose to end
[4:10] Speaker 1: her life, remember, because they found notes left in her
[4:13] Speaker 1: apartment and her bags packed, two suitcases packed. But then
[4:17] Speaker 1: also remember how Katie's family have repeatedly questioned the authenticity
[4:23] Speaker 1: of those notes because of factually incorrect information in them.
[4:26] Speaker 1: Questionable grammar from someone they tell me is so articulate
[4:29] Speaker 1: and the handwriting they tell me was just off and
[4:33] Speaker 1: there was no dates on them. And also remember the
[4:36] Speaker 1: bags that were packed. How I found out through my investigation,
[4:41] Speaker 1: I proved they were packed because Katie was planning in
[4:44] Speaker 1: the day or so after she disappeared, to fly back
[4:47] Speaker 1: to the UK to fix her visa issues to then return.
[4:51] Speaker 1: And now when we go back to the discovery of
[4:54] Speaker 1: the rope, do you see why Katie's family are seeking
[4:57] Speaker 1: any kind of clarity here or just more information? And
[5:02] Speaker 1: when Katie's father and brother flew to Sydney back in
[5:06] Speaker 1: June when it was first noted that she'd gone missing,
[5:10] Speaker 1: the police shown them a video walking through her apartment
[5:13] Speaker 1: where they could see the notes. and the bags and
[5:16] Speaker 1: back then Katie's brother tells me like he found that
[5:20] Speaker 1: video too distressing to watch all the way through so
[5:24] Speaker 1: he can't confirm or deny if in the video you
[5:27] Speaker 1: know they opened the cupboard under the sink and they
[5:29] Speaker 1: saw the rope but the fact here is it was
[5:34] Speaker 1: never mentioned to them like not at one point over
[5:37] Speaker 1: all those months until several weeks ago did the police
[5:39] Speaker 1: say hey there was also a rope under the sink
[5:43] Speaker 1: and now they're asking for confirmation like was it in
[5:45] Speaker 1: the video can we see the video when did you
[5:47] Speaker 1: find it and they're getting nothing in response which is
[5:53] Speaker 1: like everything in this case is like something new presents
[5:56] Speaker 1: itself there's a new discovery new lead whether it's from
[5:59] Speaker 1: us or the police or anything and then a dead
[6:02] Speaker 1: end and the dead end always seems to be because
[6:05] Speaker 1: of the police In the weeks leading up to Katie's
[6:10] Speaker 1: disappearance and after the chance encounter with that man from
[6:14] Speaker 1: Dubai who'd broken into her hotel room over there and
[6:18] Speaker 1: then she'd bumped into in Bondi. And that man, he's Australian.
[6:22] Speaker 1: I think I'd previously said he was Middle Eastern because
[6:25] Speaker 1: I believed he was from Dubai. And I'm not sure
[6:29] Speaker 1: I ever spoke about it since. But yes, I have
[6:32] Speaker 1: been told by multiple people now this man was an
[6:35] Speaker 1: Australian man. But yes, after... You know, he broke into
[6:37] Speaker 1: the hotel room in Dubai earlier this year. Katie's then
[6:40] Speaker 1: in Australia and sees him in Bondi. Katie then became
[6:46] Speaker 1: somewhat reclusive and rightly paranoid. And like, although she was
[6:51] Speaker 1: still venturing out, going for coffees and walks with the
[6:54] Speaker 1: friends she'd made recently who I've spoken to and spoken
[6:57] Speaker 1: about on here, her neighbors told her brother that, you know,
[7:01] Speaker 1: she suddenly just wasn't as chatty or social, which brings
[7:05] Speaker 1: me now to this new information and a friend of
[7:09] Speaker 1: Katie's back in America who I have recently spoken to
[7:13] Speaker 1: has claimed that Katie told them that in those final
[7:16] Speaker 1: weeks before she went missing she felt that she was
[7:21] Speaker 1: being followed and you know that feeling of someone lurking
[7:24] Speaker 1: in the shadows or you constantly looking over your shoulder
[7:28] Speaker 1: especially at night time is like one that most women
[7:30] Speaker 1: listening to this right now can relate to and that
[7:34] Speaker 1: paranoia you can feel especially when alone especially at night is,
[7:38] Speaker 1: you know, that's often developed at a young age when
[7:40] Speaker 1: you first realized the reality of the world and how
[7:44] Speaker 1: dangerous it can be, especially for women. But Katie had
[7:48] Speaker 1: a tangible reason to feel like she was being followed
[7:52] Speaker 1: after what happened in Dubai and then seeing that man here.
[7:56] Speaker 1: Like it wasn't a fear of the what if or
[7:58] Speaker 1: the unknown. A man who'd broken into her hotel room
[8:01] Speaker 1: in one country had suddenly crossed paths with her here
[8:05] Speaker 1: in Sydney. And then after casually mentioning this feeling that
[8:09] Speaker 1: something was off and she was maybe being followed a
[8:12] Speaker 1: couple of times to the friend I've recently spoken to
[8:14] Speaker 1: in mid-April, so now we're talking a month before Katie
[8:19] Speaker 1: went missing, that friend saw the fear in Katie's eyes
[8:23] Speaker 1: as during one of their FaceTime catch-ups while Katie was
[8:27] Speaker 1: out and about like in broad daylight, middle of the day,
[8:30] Speaker 1: I think she was sat on a bench. They were talking.
[8:32] Speaker 1: Katie believed she saw one of the people following her
[8:36] Speaker 1: And Katie was suddenly captivated by fear. And like in
[8:40] Speaker 1: a split second, that friend on the other side of
[8:43] Speaker 1: the world, on the other side of that FaceTime call,
[8:46] Speaker 1: saw Katie's smile vanish, her demeanor change, and just fear
[8:52] Speaker 1: take over her. And like feeling powerless on the other
[8:54] Speaker 1: side of the world, but equally as concerned after Katie
[8:58] Speaker 1: had previously expressed that, you know, something wasn't right in
[9:01] Speaker 1: that moment. Katie's friend took... two screenshots, which you can
[9:05] Speaker 1: see in the artwork for this episode, for reasons I
[9:07] Speaker 1: suppose she's still not entirely sure of. But yeah, then
[9:12] Speaker 1: in the seconds that followed on that call, as like
[9:15] Speaker 1: the blur of people moving around, Katie continued with their
[9:18] Speaker 1: day and no one approached her or appeared out of
[9:21] Speaker 1: the shadows. Like Katie relaxed a little bit, but she
[9:25] Speaker 1: just couldn't shake that feeling that she was being followed.
[9:29] Speaker 1: And then over the coming week, leading up to her
[9:33] Speaker 1: disappearance like Katie's fear didn't leave her but also she
[9:38] Speaker 1: didn't allow this feeling of unease to stop her living
[9:42] Speaker 1: her life and making plans for the future like we've
[9:45] Speaker 1: heard about in this podcast following that FaceTime though and
[9:50] Speaker 1: then you know getting closer and closer to the day
[9:52] Speaker 1: she did disappear Katie told that same friend that she
[9:56] Speaker 1: felt it was multiple men following her like not just one,
[10:01] Speaker 1: but people perhaps taking it in turns like a tag
[10:05] Speaker 1: team or something as if there was several people. I
[10:10] Speaker 1: think she fought three in total were taking turns to
[10:14] Speaker 1: monitor her and her movements, which For any of you
[10:18] Speaker 1: perhaps familiar with how trafficking operations work or anything like that,
[10:22] Speaker 1: you'll know this isn't like a crazy story or someone
[10:26] Speaker 1: being paranoid or something that's just unheard of here in Australia.
[10:31] Speaker 1: Like just last month, a lady called Grace Newton Wordsmith,
[10:34] Speaker 1: who is a 28-year-old woman in Melbourne and a musician,
[10:38] Speaker 1: she went viral on TikTok while detailing how whilst walking
[10:43] Speaker 1: home from a night out, a man jumped out of
[10:45] Speaker 1: his car to have what she initially felt was a
[10:48] Speaker 1: harmless chat, but quickly something much more terrifying unfolded. And
[10:54] Speaker 1: I'm going to play you her TikTok now, and it's
[10:56] Speaker 1: a couple of minutes long, but please do listen to this.
[11:00] Speaker 2: Hello, I just wanted to share something really scary that
[11:02] Speaker 2: happened to me last night as a bit of a
[11:04] Speaker 2: warning to other women, especially. I am fairly certain I
[11:10] Speaker 2: was potentially targeted for trafficking.
[11:14] Speaker 3: It was really fucked.
[11:15] Speaker 2: I was walking home early hours in the morning after
[11:18] Speaker 2: being with some friends and I was on like a
[11:21] Speaker 2: main street walking towards my street and a guy got
[11:25] Speaker 2: out of his car quite quickly and was like, Oh, Hey,
[11:27] Speaker 2: do you have a lighter? And I was like, Oh,
[11:28] Speaker 2: I do actually like my joint, the giant slider just
[11:30] Speaker 2: being like, Oh yeah, sure. Um, and then we quickly
[11:34] Speaker 2: got into a conversation cause he kept asking questions and then, you.
[11:37] Speaker 3: Know, we got into a conversation about music.
[11:38] Speaker 2: It was actually really nice. Like it was a really
[11:40] Speaker 2: wholesome chat. And then eventually I was like, he was like,
[11:43] Speaker 2: where do you live? And I was like, Oh, um,
[11:47] Speaker 2: around here and then we kept chatting and I was
[11:50] Speaker 2: like I need to go like thanks for the lovely
[11:52] Speaker 2: chat see you later um and he was like oh
[11:56] Speaker 2: I can I can drop you home like just get
[11:57] Speaker 2: in the car and I was like no that's all
[12:00] Speaker 2: good thank you like have a good night and then
[12:03] Speaker 2: I started feeling like trusting my gut and my intuition
[12:07] Speaker 2: I did not feel good so I was like all
[12:08] Speaker 2: right I need to I need to just calmly get
[12:10] Speaker 2: home not like start running up the street or something
[12:13] Speaker 2: um so I was just like walking with purpose And
[12:16] Speaker 2: I went down a different street and a white car
[12:19] Speaker 2: came around the corner and was like slowing down next
[12:22] Speaker 2: to me. And then went up to a stop sign
[12:26] Speaker 2: and just stopped for ages. And I was like, this
[12:29] Speaker 2: is not normal.
[12:30] Speaker 1: He should be gone.
[12:31] Speaker 2: Why? I just started feeling like they were working together.
[12:35] Speaker 2: And then I was like, I don't want this guy
[12:38] Speaker 2: to know where I live. I'm going to go down
[12:40] Speaker 2: a different street. And I started walking down a different street,
[12:42] Speaker 2: but it was a one way. And I was like,
[12:44] Speaker 2: if this other guy comes down this street, I'm going
[12:45] Speaker 2: to be like trapped and cornered. And so I waited
[12:48] Speaker 2: there for like a minute. And I was like, I
[12:49] Speaker 2: hope this guy in the white car is gone. And
[12:52] Speaker 2: then like, I walked up to the street and like, oh,
[12:57] Speaker 2: the guy, the guy in the white car started like reversing.
[13:02] Speaker 2: And I was like, oh, God, this is so stressful.
[13:03] Speaker 2: And then I looked up at the end of the
[13:05] Speaker 2: road and the guy in the initial car was, like,
[13:07] Speaker 2: looking down the street. He was parked up at the
[13:09] Speaker 2: end of the street and I could see him looking
[13:11] Speaker 2: at me whilst the white car was reversing. And I
[13:15] Speaker 2: was like, oh, my God, I don't want these guys
[13:16] Speaker 2: to know where I live. But then I just had to, like,
[13:20] Speaker 2: make a choice because I was like, if I don't
[13:21] Speaker 2: move now, I feel like they're going to, like, do
[13:26] Speaker 2: something awful. And so I just, like, bolted and, like,
[13:29] Speaker 2: quickly got into my apartment and, like, ran in. I
[13:31] Speaker 2: was just, like, shaking and so scared. And it's really
[13:35] Speaker 2: terrifying to me that, like, these guys now know where I,
[13:40] Speaker 2: what I walked into, what the area I am in. But, like, yeah,
[13:46] Speaker 2: it just makes me very aware that they were working together.
[13:49] Speaker 2: That was not a normal thing. I'm going to the
[13:51] Speaker 2: police about it now with one of my best friends.
[13:53] Speaker 3: She's coming over.
[13:54] Speaker 2: I've literally got to go to the police because, like,
[13:56] Speaker 2: I don't even know what they can do, but it
[13:57] Speaker 2: was really fucking scary. And just to remind her, like,
[14:01] Speaker 2: it's not safe out there for women, unfortunately. We have
[14:04] Speaker 2: to live with our guard up. And I'm so fucking
[14:08] Speaker 2: over that feeling and being afraid. But, like, it is real.
[14:13] Speaker 3: So just be really careful out there.
[14:15] Speaker 2: And sending lots of love.
[14:17] Speaker 1: Similar to that, and also in Melbourne around six weeks
[14:20] Speaker 1: ago now, a woman I know personally, Rebecca, who... appeared
[14:24] Speaker 1: on this year's season of Married at First Sight, which,
[14:27] Speaker 1: for those who don't know, I have another podcast covering
[14:29] Speaker 1: that show and working with the cast. Rebecca went viral
[14:33] Speaker 1: as she shared her own emotional video where she was
[14:36] Speaker 1: distraught and had just got home, and she explained how
[14:40] Speaker 1: she'd just been followed to the supermarket from a man
[14:43] Speaker 1: who'd been waiting outside her home.
[14:45] Speaker 3: Okay, this is just a quick post. I just walked
[14:49] Speaker 3: out of my apartment and to the supermarket, and it's probably...
[14:54] Speaker 3: you know, three, three minutes down the road from where
[14:56] Speaker 3: I live. And, um, I knew that someone was following me.
[14:59] Speaker 3: So I crossed the road and, um, anyway, I'm fine.
[15:03] Speaker 3: Everything's fine. But this guy, he actually followed me into
[15:06] Speaker 3: the supermarket and was following me around and it was
[15:09] Speaker 3: fucking really scary. Anyway, this beautiful pet that he came
[15:12] Speaker 3: up to me, it was in my face.
[15:13] Speaker 2: I don't know.
[15:15] Speaker 3: It was, it was fucking weird. And, um, these beautiful
[15:19] Speaker 3: people surrounded me and then They ended up walking me
[15:22] Speaker 3: back to my apartment.
[15:23] Speaker 2: So all I'm going to.
[15:24] Speaker 3: Say is this, males, females, just be careful when you're
[15:28] Speaker 3: walking around and just always make sure that you're safe
[15:31] Speaker 3: because it was really scary.
[15:33] Speaker 1: As I spoke to Rebecca about this weeks later and
[15:35] Speaker 1: she went into more detail, like she was still as
[15:38] Speaker 1: shook up and like scared as she was on the
[15:42] Speaker 1: day this happened. And she explained how she told the
[15:46] Speaker 1: police and they just didn't care.
[15:48] Speaker 2: I was terrified.
[15:49] Speaker 3: I was absolutely terrified. And I just, like, I didn't, oh, God,
[15:53] Speaker 3: I don't want to start crying, but I just, like,
[15:56] Speaker 3: it just concerns me. Fucking hell, I'm so emotional. It's
[15:59] Speaker 3: just almost, it just concerns me for the young women
[16:02] Speaker 3: out there and the young girls that are, like, 40,
[16:06] Speaker 3: whatever age, not to be aware of it. And, like,
[16:11] Speaker 3: I basically left my apartment. I crossed the road and
[16:15] Speaker 3: I could see this. man standing across the road just
[16:18] Speaker 3: watching me. So I basically crossed the road again and
[16:21] Speaker 3: I was on the phone to Beck and I said
[16:23] Speaker 3: to Beck, something's not right. And he followed me like
[16:26] Speaker 3: all the way down the street, like two streets. He
[16:30] Speaker 3: was on an opposite side. So I kept on looking
[16:33] Speaker 3: because I was scared that he was going to actually
[16:35] Speaker 3: cross the road and come up from behind me. So
[16:37] Speaker 3: I kept looking over my shoulder, looking around. And then
[16:41] Speaker 3: when I got to the supermarket, he was standing outside
[16:44] Speaker 3: and I had to cross the road to go past him.
[16:46] Speaker 3: And as I walked in, he said something to me.
[16:48] Speaker 3: And I said, look, I can't hear you. I'm on
[16:50] Speaker 3: the phone. And Bec's on the phone going, don't engage,
[16:53] Speaker 3: don't engage. And then I walked into the supermarket and
[16:56] Speaker 3: as soon as I walked in, I looked up, you
[16:59] Speaker 3: know how there's got the revision mirror? Like I looked
[17:01] Speaker 3: up and I saw him walk in the supermarket behind me.
[17:03] Speaker 3: So my gut instinct was like, just go find a
[17:06] Speaker 3: man and stand next.
[17:07] Speaker 2: To a man.
[17:07] Speaker 3: So that's what I did. I went through the speed
[17:10] Speaker 3: gates and there was a man there checking out his groceries.
[17:13] Speaker 3: I just went and stood right next to him and
[17:15] Speaker 3: he was on the phone. And then this, yeah, the
[17:20] Speaker 3: guy that followed me was standing behind me and I
[17:23] Speaker 3: was trying to get the man's attention and And after about,
[17:26] Speaker 3: I don't know, two or three minutes, these other girls
[17:28] Speaker 3: jumped in. Like it was these young girls that jumped in, honey,
[17:31] Speaker 3: that were both on the opposite sides of the checkouts,
[17:35] Speaker 3: like doing their own self-checkout, sorry. They actually came to
[17:39] Speaker 3: my aid. And I was just in tears. Like, I
[17:42] Speaker 3: was just standing there going, I don't know what I've done. Like,
[17:44] Speaker 3: I've just walked to the supermarket. He's followed me all
[17:47] Speaker 3: the way. It was just weird. It was just so,
[17:51] Speaker 3: so weird. And the young girl was both, well, the
[17:54] Speaker 3: mother and the daughter, so they walked me home. And
[17:56] Speaker 3: then I did the mountain, and then I went to
[17:57] Speaker 3: the police station the next day to report her. And
[18:00] Speaker 3: the police basically said, like, I gave a full description
[18:02] Speaker 3: of what he looked like, where I was, the street
[18:04] Speaker 3: that I was in, all the detail.
[18:07] Speaker 2: And.
[18:08] Speaker 3: The police basically said to me, because they said to me, oh,
[18:10] Speaker 3: did you feel threatened for your life? Did he abuse you?
[18:12] Speaker 3: Did he put a hand on you? And I said, honey,
[18:14] Speaker 3: he was six foot two standing over me in a supermarket.
[18:17] Speaker 3: They basically said there's nothing they can do. They can
[18:19] Speaker 3: patrol the area. And I just said to them, the
[18:22] Speaker 3: only reason why I went in there is because I
[18:23] Speaker 3: didn't know whether he was a menace in society. And
[18:25] Speaker 3: I just wanted, yeah.
[18:28] Speaker 1: If you found yourself in this episode, especially hearing how
[18:31] Speaker 1: Katie was telling her friend she feared she was being
[18:34] Speaker 1: followed by multiple people. Like if you found yourself going, well,
[18:36] Speaker 1: why didn't she go to the police? Why didn't she
[18:39] Speaker 1: report that she felt she was being followed? Like initially, yeah,
[18:42] Speaker 1: I asked myself the same, but then I think what
[18:45] Speaker 1: Rebecca said there is why she didn't like basically without
[18:50] Speaker 1: any physical proof or details of the men or the
[18:54] Speaker 1: escalation of someone actually doing something to her, like what
[18:58] Speaker 1: would the police do? Which is so fucked. And that's
[19:01] Speaker 1: a whole other issue in itself. Um, but yeah, the
[19:05] Speaker 1: reality is that often the police won't step in until
[19:08] Speaker 1: it's often too late. And, you know, another reason perhaps
[19:12] Speaker 1: Katie didn't mention to the police, she felt she was
[19:15] Speaker 1: being followed is whatever she was involved in overseas, whatever
[19:19] Speaker 1: it was that it seems she left behind, uh, in Dubai,
[19:23] Speaker 1: maybe she didn't want the authorities to start looking into
[19:27] Speaker 1: that for whatever reason. Again, we still have no idea what,
[19:31] Speaker 1: she was caught up in or victim of and yeah
[19:34] Speaker 1: I suppose the reason I wanted to share those two
[19:36] Speaker 1: stories in this episode there is because it is so
[19:40] Speaker 1: easy for people and men especially male police officers in
[19:44] Speaker 1: particular I've now learned to just dismiss women and they
[19:48] Speaker 1: can roll their eyes and say like oh you know
[19:51] Speaker 1: nothing physical happened or are you sure about that love
[19:54] Speaker 1: you know you're not just being paranoid or you know
[19:56] Speaker 1: well there's no proof this happened or proof you're being
[19:58] Speaker 1: followed but women know you listen to this you know
[20:03] Speaker 1: you know when something's not right you you get that
[20:06] Speaker 1: feeling we all get that feeling and especially again women
[20:10] Speaker 1: no and Katie knew and like as I've said women
[20:14] Speaker 1: you're raised to look out for things like this to
[20:17] Speaker 1: always be alert you're taught this world isn't safe for
[20:20] Speaker 1: you as soon as you're basically able to understand the
[20:23] Speaker 1: world around you and you learn from very early on
[20:26] Speaker 1: that bad things do happen and can happen and you
[20:29] Speaker 1: live with that constant feeling of looking over your shoulder
[20:32] Speaker 1: and like yes women just like Katie did in those
[20:36] Speaker 1: final weeks and as I've just said you know when
[20:40] Speaker 1: something isn't right, but then like, what can you do
[20:43] Speaker 1: about it if no one will listen to you other
[20:46] Speaker 1: than continue and pray and hope for the best? And
[20:53] Speaker 1: like one final thing Rebecca told me actually when I
[20:55] Speaker 1: phoned her, which I found alarming is just how many
[20:59] Speaker 1: women here in Australia following her video who watched that
[21:04] Speaker 1: and then reached out to her to share their own
[21:06] Speaker 1: similar experiences.
[21:08] Speaker 3: And the thing is, amount of people that have reached
[21:11] Speaker 3: out to me on TikTok and Instagram and my socials,
[21:14] Speaker 3: these young, beautiful women and older women that it's happened to,
[21:17] Speaker 3: like it's just rife at the moment. Like I don't,
[21:20] Speaker 3: it's quite scary. It's fucking wild, wild, wild the stories
[21:26] Speaker 3: these women are telling me. The amount, like people just
[21:28] Speaker 3: DM me, oh, this happened to me the other day.
[21:30] Speaker 3: This happened to me. And I'm just like, what the fuck?
[21:33] Speaker 3: Like it's just, it blows my mind. It blows my
[21:36] Speaker 3: mind that this is happening.
[21:37] Speaker 1: I think between all of, these three stories here, Katie,
[21:41] Speaker 1: Grace and Rebecca, like motifs may be different. Like Grace,
[21:45] Speaker 1: the first woman you heard the audio from, what happened
[21:48] Speaker 1: to her felt like a trafficking operation where she was
[21:51] Speaker 1: targeted by multiple men in multiple vehicles who'd waited until
[21:56] Speaker 1: she was alone, isolated and vulnerable. And then Rebecca, she
[22:00] Speaker 1: told me she doesn't believe what happened to her was
[22:04] Speaker 1: related to trafficking. She felt it was more potentially something
[22:09] Speaker 1: more opportunistic from a man with bad intentions who was
[22:13] Speaker 1: maybe just stood outside her building waiting for anyone and
[22:17] Speaker 1: she was possibly the first woman he saw and then
[22:21] Speaker 1: you know with Katie given what we know about things
[22:25] Speaker 1: she likely became caught up in over in Dubai and
[22:28] Speaker 1: the fact that that man who broke into the room
[22:31] Speaker 1: in Dubai had then shown up in Sydney like this
[22:33] Speaker 1: feels like something on a much bigger scale where when
[22:38] Speaker 1: you stop and think about it, the primary motive, it
[22:40] Speaker 1: feels more than ever that it would be to silence her.
[22:46] Speaker 1: And then like, how do you silence somebody? Will you
[22:50] Speaker 1: make them disappear? And then you ask yourself, well, if
[22:54] Speaker 1: you're going to make someone disappear, how do you do
[22:56] Speaker 1: that in a way where you try and make sure
[22:58] Speaker 1: nobody then starts looking for them and asking questions? And well,
[23:04] Speaker 1: I'd say you do that by making it seem that
[23:07] Speaker 1: you disappeared of their own accord and you do that
[23:10] Speaker 1: by leaving what some barely legible scribbles and scraps of
[23:14] Speaker 1: paper that the police could see as suicide notes and
[23:17] Speaker 1: then maybe you even leave other obvious things behind such
[23:22] Speaker 1: as a rope under the sink and all of this
[23:26] Speaker 1: this is why Katie's family there it's not that they're
[23:29] Speaker 1: refusing to believe the rope thing but they're wanting more
[23:34] Speaker 1: clarity around it and answers and also actual evidence like
[23:38] Speaker 1: has this rope been forensically analyzed does it have Katie's
[23:42] Speaker 1: fingerprints on it or DNA on it or do you
[23:46] Speaker 1: know what I mean same with the notes and like
[23:48] Speaker 1: without investigating these things further and answering questions like this
[23:52] Speaker 1: with actual facts instead of just using language like we
[23:56] Speaker 1: believe and she may have We have to remember like
[23:59] Speaker 1: there is a distinction between evidence and interpretation. And with
[24:04] Speaker 1: the rope, which I suppose was the purpose of this episode,
[24:06] Speaker 1: without establishing its connection to Katie with undeniable proof, to
[24:12] Speaker 1: me at least, its significance remains unverified and it shouldn't
[24:18] Speaker 1: be used as another way to tick a box to go, yeah, well,
[24:22] Speaker 1: definitely suicide because, you know, there was a rope. I
[24:26] Speaker 1: do just want to end this episode now by saying like, Myself,
[24:29] Speaker 1: Katie's family, no one is refusing to believe that Katie
[24:36] Speaker 1: could have taken her life. We're simply kind of saying, hey,
[24:42] Speaker 1: everything out there suggests otherwise. And we're not just talking about,
[24:47] Speaker 1: you know, the questionable proof, according to the police, of
[24:50] Speaker 1: the notes and the bags and the rope and all
[24:53] Speaker 1: that stuff. And, you know, oh, she was near some water.
[24:55] Speaker 1: So that much means she's walked into the water. But
[24:58] Speaker 1: we're going off like her state of mind from everyone
[25:03] Speaker 1: she was speaking to, her closest friends, her family, everyone
[25:06] Speaker 1: who knew her best at that point, she went missing
[25:09] Speaker 1: and the plan she was making. That's why, you know,
[25:12] Speaker 1: even with new evidence like the rope, we're still going,
[25:17] Speaker 1: that doesn't mean anything until you can prove it means something.
[25:21] Speaker 1: So please prove it. Because at the end of the day,
[25:24] Speaker 1: all Katie's family really want, which sounds sad, is either
[25:29] Speaker 1: answers or closure and also just justice for Katie. And
[25:34] Speaker 1: to know that, you know, the police did their best
[25:37] Speaker 1: and they did their best to get that justice and
[25:41] Speaker 1: those answers.
