[0:01] Justin Hayden Miller: Welcome to Global Trade Deciphered.
[0:03] Justin Hayden Miller: I'm your host, Justin Hayden Miller, a global trade lawyer with a leading European firm, decoding the policies shaping global trade and emerging trends.
[0:15] Justin Hayden Miller: Hello everyone.
[0:20] Justin Hayden Miller: Welcome to Global Trade Deciphered, the podcast that explores the intricate world of global trade, geopolitics, and the global economy.
[0:30] Justin Hayden Miller: I'm your host, Justin Hayden Miller.
[0:32] Justin Hayden Miller: Whether you're a business leader navigating complex supply chains, a policymaker crafting strategies for international relations, or simply someone intrigued by the forces that connect our world, you've come to the right place.
[0:48] Justin Hayden Miller: In this introductory episode, I'll share what this podcast is all about, why it matters now more than ever, and a bit about my own journey in this field to give you a sense of the perspective I'll bring to our discussions.
[1:03] Justin Hayden Miller: I've heard that about half of podcast listeners listen to podcasts in the home, but whether you're at home or in the car or in the gym, or just walking the dog, and wherever you are, welcome to the series.
[1:17] Justin Hayden Miller: So what's different about this particular podcast?
[1:21] Justin Hayden Miller: Global trade and geopolitics can often seem like dense technical subjects, filled with regulations and jargon that feel inaccessible to anyone outside a narrow circle of experts.
[1:34] Justin Hayden Miller: This podcast aims to change that.
[1:37] Justin Hayden Miller: We'll decode these topics in a way that's engaging, informative, and accessible to everyone, from seasoned executives to those starting to explore international business.
[1:49] Justin Hayden Miller: At the same time, we'll provide the depth and the nuance that experts appreciate, offering alternative perspectives that challenge conventional thinking.
[1:59] Justin Hayden Miller: I'll draw on insights from history, economics, philosophy, and even the arts to illuminate how current events are reshaping global markets.
[2:10] Justin Hayden Miller: The goal is to make these issues not just understandable, but relevant to your decisions, whether in the boardroom, in policy debates, or in understanding the world around you.
[2:24] Justin Hayden Miller: Let me explain why I started this podcast and what you can expect.
[2:30] Justin Hayden Miller: In today's interconnected economy, global trade isn't just about moving goods across borders.
[2:37] Justin Hayden Miller: It's the backbone of innovation, growth, and stability.
[2:43] Justin Hayden Miller: But it's also fraught with challenges, tariffs that shift overnight, supply chain disruptions from geopolitical tensions, regulatory changes that upend entire industries and emerging trends like AI, decarbonisation and digital trade.
[3:01] Justin Hayden Miller: These aren't abstract concepts.
[3:04] Justin Hayden Miller: They directly impact businesses, jobs and economies worldwide.
[3:10] Justin Hayden Miller: Through this series we'll break down episode by episode, providing clear analysis and forward-looking insights.
[3:20] Justin Hayden Miller: And crucially, we'll feature the very best world-class experts, highly regarded in their fields, industry leaders, policy makers, and decision makers who are actively shaping these areas.
[3:35] Justin Hayden Miller: Their first hand experiences will offer you a window into the strategies and the thinking that drive real-world outcomes.
[3:44] Justin Hayden Miller: What truly sets global trade deciphered apart is its focus on the human element in an era dominated by data and AI.
[3:54] Justin Hayden Miller: While artificial intelligence can crunch numbers and predict trends, it can sometimes miss the subtle nuances, the historical contexts, the interpersonal negotiations, the ethical considerations that define global trade.
[4:10] Justin Hayden Miller: Here we emphasize direct insights from those on the ground.
[4:15] Justin Hayden Miller: Think of it as code-breaking, but for the modern economy.
[4:18] Justin Hayden Miller: Just as ancient civilizations used ciphers to protect trade secrets like shipping routes or pricing agreements, today's world relies on encryption for everything from blockchain to e-commerce.
[4:32] Justin Hayden Miller: We'll decipher the codes of complex policies, turning them into actionable intelligence you can use to anticipate risks and seize opportunities.
[4:43] Justin Hayden Miller: Until my guests appear, I'll mostly be joined on my podcast by a cup of coffee or tea, depending upon the time of day.
[4:52] Justin Hayden Miller: But let's talk about what I bring to the table.
[4:55] Justin Hayden Miller: As a global trade lawyer and partner at one of Europe's largest commercial law firms, I've dedicated nearly three decades to navigating the complexities of international trade, customs and tax.
[5:07] Justin Hayden Miller: My career began as a barrister at UK Customs Headquarters in London, where I handled important litigation concerning international issues.
[5:16] Justin Hayden Miller: This role gave me an insider's view of how governments enforce rules from customs seizures to intricate international issues.
[5:26] Justin Hayden Miller: From there, I became an advoca, lawyer in France, building expertise across Europe.
[5:31] Justin Hayden Miller: At the big four and major world consultancy firms, I have led teams advising multinational corporations on supply chain optimizations, compliance, and strategy.
[5:43] Justin Hayden Miller: From everyday issues to guiding major listed companies handling matters spanning all 27 EU member states and the UK.
[5:51] Justin Hayden Miller: Global trade is more than rules and tariffs.
[5:54] Justin Hayden Miller: It's about people, innovation, and adapting to change.
[5:59] Justin Hayden Miller: I've seen firsthand how a single regulatory tweak can cascade through supply chains, affecting everything from manufacturing costs to market access.
[6:10] Justin Hayden Miller: And I've learned that the best solutions often come from viewing issues through multiple lenses, historical precedents, like how ancient trade routes influenced modern geopolitics, economic models that predict shifts in global power, or even philosophical questions about fairness in international agreements.
[6:33] Justin Hayden Miller: So I want the podcast to analyze issues from these perspectives as well.
[6:38] Justin Hayden Miller: That's why in this podcast we'll not only analyze current affairs, but also explore how these concepts can apply more broadly to your business strategies, policy decisions, or simply your personal understanding of the world.
[6:54] Justin Hayden Miller: We'll discuss strategies for turning volatility into competitive advantage.
[7:01] Justin Hayden Miller: And yes, we'll provide alternative perspectives.
[7:05] Justin Hayden Miller: Questioning mainstream narratives, drawing parallels from history, and considering ethical dimensions, episodes will be evergreen.
[7:15] Justin Hayden Miller: They'll remain relevant whether you listen today or in years to come.
[7:21] Justin Hayden Miller: I've aimed for a mix of formats, some solo, others featuring in-depth interviews to keep you updated on fast moving trends.
