[0:04] Speaker 1: Us was to the us. Allie the snowy owl, fluffed
[0:11] Speaker 1: his soft white feathers with excitement. Tonight was the night
[0:19] Speaker 1: his very first time flying under the moon and stars.
[0:25] Speaker 1: He had practiced and practiced, and now his mother said
[0:30] Speaker 1: he was ready. He sat on the edge of his
[0:33] Speaker 1: cozy tree hollow, looking out. The tree house was tucked
[0:39] Speaker 1: high and the oldest pine tree in the forest, its
[0:44] Speaker 1: thick branches cradling the snug little home like gentle arms.
[0:51] Speaker 1: A soft nest of moss and downy feathers lined the floor,
[0:56] Speaker 1: and tiny fireflies sometimes wandered in through the round doorway,
[1:01] Speaker 1: blinking curiously, before floating back out again. Tonight, though Ollie
[1:08] Speaker 1: had no attention for his cozy home, His golden eyes
[1:13] Speaker 1: were fixed on the evening sky. The sun had already
[1:18] Speaker 1: slipped behind the far hills, but its last colors still
[1:23] Speaker 1: linger like a whispered good night. Bands of peach and
[1:28] Speaker 1: rose stretched across the horizon, melting upward into lavender and
[1:35] Speaker 1: then into the deepest, richest indigo. A single streak of
[1:41] Speaker 1: amber light clung to the tree tops, as if the
[1:45] Speaker 1: day wasn't quite ready to say goodbye. And above it
[1:48] Speaker 1: all the first stars had begun to appear, one here,
[1:54] Speaker 1: two there, like tiny holes poked in a dark velvet curtain,
[2:01] Speaker 1: letting the light of some faraway place shine through the
[2:06] Speaker 1: moon was a friendly, glowing circle, but the sky beyond
[2:11] Speaker 1: it was a vast, deep blanket of blue black. It
[2:17] Speaker 1: was bigger and darker than Ollie had ever seen it before.
[2:22] Speaker 1: His heart, which had been beating fast with joy, began
[2:27] Speaker 1: to beat fast with a different feeling. The darkness seemed
[2:34] Speaker 1: to go on forever. He felt very small and a
[2:41] Speaker 1: little bit scared. A gentle voice came from behind him.
[2:46] Speaker 1: It's a big world to see for the first time,
[2:49] Speaker 1: my little night flier, said Mamma Owl, settling beside him.
[2:56] Speaker 1: Her wing was warm and steady against his side, her
[3:00] Speaker 1: golden eyes calm as candlelight. But Mamma, Holly whispered, it's
[3:07] Speaker 1: so dark. What if I get lost in all that quiet?
[3:13] Speaker 1: Mamma Owl looked up at the sky with her wise
[3:16] Speaker 1: golden eyes. Don't try to see all of it at once, Molly,
[3:24] Speaker 1: that is how you feel lost. Instead, find just one star,
[3:32] Speaker 1: pick the brightest one you can see, and look only
[3:36] Speaker 1: at that. What if I pick the wrong one? He asked,
[3:41] Speaker 1: his voice very small, There is no wrong one, Mama
[3:46] Speaker 1: Owl said warmly. Every star you choose will be the
[3:51] Speaker 1: right one. The secret is simply to choose one star,
[3:59] Speaker 1: one breath, one moment at a time. Ali took a
[4:04] Speaker 1: deep breath of the cool, pine suned night air. He
[4:10] Speaker 1: scanned the enormous sky and found one star that twinkled
[4:15] Speaker 1: like a tiny diamond, hanging just above the dark silhouette
[4:21] Speaker 1: of the mountains. He looked at it, and only at
[4:27] Speaker 1: it good, said Mamu softly. Now that star is the sun,
[4:34] Speaker 1: just like our sun, but very very far away. Its
[4:40] Speaker 1: light has been traveling for years and years, just to
[4:45] Speaker 1: say hello to your eyes to night. Allie's beak dropped
[4:49] Speaker 1: open in wonder, a whole sun so far away. He
[4:55] Speaker 1: looked at the single star and the big dark sky.
[5:00] Speaker 1: I didn't seem quite so scary any more. It seemed
[5:04] Speaker 1: full of distant, quiet friends. Do you feel a little
[5:09] Speaker 1: braver now, Mamma Owl asked. Allie nodded slowly, a little,
[5:16] Speaker 1: he said. The star is so far away, but it
[5:22] Speaker 1: feels like it's looking right at me. Perhaps it is,
[5:27] Speaker 1: Mamma Owl smiled. Now shall we add another star to
[5:33] Speaker 1: your evening? He found a second one near by, and
[5:37] Speaker 1: then a third. Each one was like meeting a new friend.
[5:43] Speaker 1: The darkness between them didn't feel empty any more. It
[5:48] Speaker 1: felt like the quiet space between stories in a bedtime book.
[5:54] Speaker 1: Just then, a soft, golden green light blinked near by.
[6:00] Speaker 1: It floated over to the branch and pulsed with a warm,
[6:06] Speaker 1: friendly glow. Hullo said the light. My name is Luna.
[6:14] Speaker 1: I couldn't help, but here are you looking at the stars?
[6:19] Speaker 1: Ollie nodded his eyes wide. I'm trying, he said, but
[6:27] Speaker 1: there are so many. That's the best part. Luna chimed,
[6:31] Speaker 1: her light dancing. They're not just random, they tell stories.
[6:38] Speaker 1: Come fly a little with me, I'll show you. Allie
[6:42] Speaker 1: looked at his mother. She gave him a gentle nod.
[6:47] Speaker 1: Go on, she whispered, I'll be right here. Allie's fear
[6:52] Speaker 1: was now mixed with curiosity. He took a deep breath,
[6:58] Speaker 1: spread his wide, silent wings, and pushed off into the night.
[7:04] Speaker 1: The air was cool and soft against his feathers. He glided,
[7:11] Speaker 1: and Luna the firefly floated beside him like a tiny
[7:16] Speaker 1: guiding lantern. Look there, said Luna, her glow pointing toward
[7:22] Speaker 1: a group of stars. Do you see those seven bright ones,
[7:27] Speaker 1: shaped like a big kitchen spoon. I see them, Allie cried.
[7:34] Speaker 1: He had seen them from the ground, but never like
[7:37] Speaker 1: this from up in the air. That's called the Big Dipper,
[7:43] Speaker 1: Luna explained. Some people see it as part of a
[7:48] Speaker 1: much bigger picture, a great big bear. See how those
[7:56] Speaker 1: stars make the bears back and tail. Ollie tilted his head,
[8:03] Speaker 1: and then he saw it. The stars connected in his mind,
[8:09] Speaker 1: and the great bear appeared, lumbering across the dark canvas.
[8:16] Speaker 1: It was amazing. Now look right beside it, Luna said,
[8:21] Speaker 1: flickering her glow upward. See that tiny dipper. It's smaller
[8:28] Speaker 1: and sigher, but just as special. That's the Little Dipper.
[8:36] Speaker 1: And at the very tip of its handle. See that
[8:39] Speaker 1: bright one, that's the North Star. It always stays in
[8:45] Speaker 1: the same place, so if you ever feel lost, you
[8:50] Speaker 1: can find it and know which way's home. Ollie stared
[8:54] Speaker 1: at the North Star, and a warm feeling settled in
[8:59] Speaker 1: his chest. A star that would always show him the
[9:03] Speaker 1: way home. What a wonderful thing to know. Over there,
[9:10] Speaker 1: Luna continued drifting to the left, her glow catching on
[9:15] Speaker 1: something elegant. Do you see that shape? It looks like
[9:21] Speaker 1: a great bird with its long wings stretched wide. That's
[9:27] Speaker 1: the swan. See the cross it makes Some call it
[9:33] Speaker 1: the Northern Cross, but I think it looks like a
[9:36] Speaker 1: swan flying silently across the milky Way. Allie traced the
[9:42] Speaker 1: shape with his wingtip, and the swan appeared, gliding gracefully
[9:48] Speaker 1: through the shimmering river of light that ran through the sky.
[9:54] Speaker 1: He had never seen the milky Way before. It looked
[9:58] Speaker 1: like someone had spun build a handful of powdered sugar
[10:02] Speaker 1: across the heavens now. Look there, Luna said, flickering toward
[10:08] Speaker 1: a different, twinklier cluster. That's a little fox. Ollie looked
[10:14] Speaker 1: and looked, and soon the little fox appeared, leaping through
[10:20] Speaker 1: the cosmic forest. He felt a giggle bubble up inside him.
[10:27] Speaker 1: The sky wasn't empty at all. It was full of pictures.
[10:33] Speaker 1: The night sky is a giant picture book, Luna said,
[10:38] Speaker 1: written with light instead of ink, and the pictures are
[10:43] Speaker 1: always there waiting for you to look closely. Can I try, all,
[10:49] Speaker 1: he asked, suddenly, Can I try to find them by myself?
[10:54] Speaker 1: Luna's light pulsed happily. Of course, I'll day quiet. You
[11:02] Speaker 1: look Allie took a breath and scanned the sky. He
[11:07] Speaker 1: found the Big Dipper first. There it was the familiar
[11:12] Speaker 1: spoon shape, easy and bright. The big Dipper, he said confidently,
[11:20] Speaker 1: and the great bear perfect, Luna whispered. He turned his head,
[11:26] Speaker 1: and there the Little Dipper and the north star at
[11:31] Speaker 1: the tip. His voice grew steadier, and over there he paused,
[11:39] Speaker 1: searching until he saw the cross shape with its long,
[11:44] Speaker 1: graceful wings, the swan and the fox. Luna teased gently.
[11:52] Speaker 1: Ollie searched the darker patches of sky, his sharp eyes
[11:56] Speaker 1: tracing the lines. Then he found it. A bright star
[12:01] Speaker 1: for the nose, three more for the back, and a
[12:05] Speaker 1: long line of stars curving into a tail. There, he
[12:10] Speaker 1: cried proudly. The little fox leaping over the bear. Luna
[12:16] Speaker 1: did a little loop in the air, her light sparkling.
[12:21] Speaker 1: You're a natural. Ali. Ali soared in a wide, happy circle,
[12:28] Speaker 1: the cool air whistling softly past him. He looked down
[12:33] Speaker 1: at the forest below, at the silver moonlight on the
[12:37] Speaker 1: tree tops, and the quiet world sleeping beneath him. He
[12:42] Speaker 1: wasn't scared any more. He felt like the whole night
[12:46] Speaker 1: was his friend. Each of those lights is a star,
[12:49] Speaker 1: Luna added happily. Our sun is a star too, but
[12:54] Speaker 1: it's our closest one. It keeps our world warm and bright,
[13:00] Speaker 1: so we can play during the day. Ollie thought about
[13:04] Speaker 1: that the sun was a star, and the stars were
[13:09] Speaker 1: far away suns. Everything felt connected and wonderful. He saw
[13:16] Speaker 1: his mother watching from their tree, her silhouette calm and proud.
[13:23] Speaker 1: He flew back to her, landing gently on the branch.
[13:28] Speaker 1: Thank you, Mamma, he said, nuzzling her, Thank you, Luna.
[13:33] Speaker 1: Luna gave one last cheerful blank. You are welcome ally
[13:40] Speaker 1: enjoy your sky. Then she floated away into the bushes,
[13:45] Speaker 1: her light fading like a sleepy sigh. Mamma Owl tucked
[13:50] Speaker 1: a wing around him. The night is not to be feared,
[13:56] Speaker 1: she whispered. It is a peaceful, beautiful time, filled with
[14:03] Speaker 1: gentle light and quiet wonders, and you are brave enough
[14:10] Speaker 1: to see them. Ally looked up at the starry picture
[14:13] Speaker 1: book one last time. He saw the great Bear and
[14:17] Speaker 1: the little fox, the swan gliding through the milky way,
[14:22] Speaker 1: and the little dipper tipping its handle toward the North Star,
[14:27] Speaker 1: all of them resting under the same quiet, twinkling lights
[14:32] Speaker 1: as him. I'm really glad I went, he said softly.
[14:38] Speaker 1: I was so scared at first, but now I know
[14:43] Speaker 1: all their names. You did wonderfully, Mamma Owl said, resting
[14:49] Speaker 1: her beak gently on top of his head. Alli felt proud,
[14:55] Speaker 1: a warm, glowing pride that hummed in his chest like
[15:00] Speaker 1: one of Luna's lights. He thought of his little brother Pip,
[15:06] Speaker 1: who would be waking up soon, small and round and fuzzy,
[15:11] Speaker 1: with wide eyes that were always asking questions. I can't
[15:17] Speaker 1: wait until tomorrow night, Allie yawned, his eyes getting heavy.
[15:22] Speaker 1: I'm going to teach Pip all the sky pictures. I'll
[15:27] Speaker 1: show him the Bear first because it's the biggest and
[15:30] Speaker 1: the north star, so he'll always know the way home.
[15:35] Speaker 1: He's going to love it. Mama always smiled, her golden
[15:40] Speaker 1: eyes soft. And you will be the best guide, she said.
[15:47] Speaker 1: Now close your eyes, my brave night flier. The stars
[15:53] Speaker 1: will watch over you until the sun returns. All He
[15:58] Speaker 1: nestled deeper into the water, moss and downy feathers through
[16:04] Speaker 1: the round doorway of his tree house. He could still
[16:08] Speaker 1: see a sliver of sky, one last star twinkling just
[16:15] Speaker 1: for him. Good Night, Stars, he whispered, and As Allie
[16:20] Speaker 1: drifted off to sleep, he dreamed of soaring through the gentle,
[16:25] Speaker 1: star filled dark, not as a small, scared owl, but
[16:32] Speaker 1: as a brave explorer of the quiet, wonderful night sky,
[16:37] Speaker 1: leading his little brother by the wing, pointing out every bear,
[16:43] Speaker 1: every swan, every leaping fox, and telling him the same
[16:49] Speaker 1: thing Mama Owl had told him. Find just one star,
[16:57] Speaker 1: look only at that, and the whole sky will become
[17:02] Speaker 1: your friend.
