[0:04] Speaker 1: Us study eyes. Once upon a time, in a small
[0:11] Speaker 1: house at the edge of a quiet village, there lived
[0:16] Speaker 1: a little girl named Luna. Luna had soft brown curls,
[0:23] Speaker 1: warm curious eyes, and a heart full of wonder. But
[0:29] Speaker 1: most of all, Luna loved the night sky. Every evening,
[0:37] Speaker 1: when the sun slipped down behind the hills and the
[0:41] Speaker 1: first stars began to peek out, Luna would press her
[0:46] Speaker 1: nose against her bedroom window and count them, one, two, three.
[0:53] Speaker 1: She would whisper, her breath, making little clouds on the glass. Hellos, stars,
[1:01] Speaker 1: I'm so glad you're here. Luna's grandmother had taught her
[1:05] Speaker 1: many things about the night sky. Grandmother Rose lived just
[1:12] Speaker 1: down the lane, and on clear evenings she would sit
[1:17] Speaker 1: with Luna on the back porch, wrapped in a big quilt,
[1:23] Speaker 1: and point up at the darkness. Do you know, Luna,
[1:28] Speaker 1: Grandmother Rose would say, those stars are suns, just like
[1:34] Speaker 1: our own son. They only look small because they are
[1:39] Speaker 1: so very far away. Some of the starlight we see
[1:45] Speaker 1: has traveled for years and years just to reach our eyes. Years,
[1:53] Speaker 1: Luna would gasp, years and years. Grandmother Rose would nod. So,
[2:00] Speaker 1: so when you look at a star, you might be
[2:03] Speaker 1: seeing light that started its journey before you were even born.
[2:08] Speaker 1: Isn't that something? It was something, indeed, and Luna never
[2:14] Speaker 1: forgot it. One autumn evening, when the air smelled of
[2:19] Speaker 1: fallen leaves and the moon was a thin silver smile,
[2:24] Speaker 1: Luna was getting ready for bed. She had brushed her teeth,
[2:30] Speaker 1: put on her favorite pajamas with the little moons on them,
[2:34] Speaker 1: and climbed under her covers. But before she closed her eyes,
[2:41] Speaker 1: she looked out the window, as she always did, to
[2:45] Speaker 1: say good night to the stars. That was when she
[2:48] Speaker 1: noticed something strange. The brightest star in the sky, the
[2:55] Speaker 1: one that always seemed to shine just above the old
[3:00] Speaker 1: oak tree, was flickering. It wasn't twinkling the way it
[3:07] Speaker 1: usually did. Instead, it blinked slowly, dimly, as if it
[3:15] Speaker 1: could barely keep its light on. Blink, blink, blink. Oh, dear,
[3:24] Speaker 1: Luna whispered, that star looks tired. She watched for a
[3:29] Speaker 1: long moment. The star gave one more weak little flicker,
[3:36] Speaker 1: and then, to Luna's amazement, she heard something. It was
[3:43] Speaker 1: very soft, softer than a feather falling, but she was
[3:49] Speaker 1: sure she heard it A tiny, sleepy voice, so tired.
[3:55] Speaker 1: The voice sighed so very, very tired. Luna sat straight
[4:03] Speaker 1: up in bed. Did you just speak to me, little star?
[4:08] Speaker 1: The star flickered faintly. I did. I'm sorry to bother you,
[4:15] Speaker 1: but I've been shining for such a long long time,
[4:20] Speaker 1: and to night I simply cannot find my twinkle. I
[4:25] Speaker 1: am too sleepy to shine properly, and the night sky
[4:30] Speaker 1: needs me. Without my light, the sailors on the sea
[4:35] Speaker 1: might lose their way, and the baby owls learning to
[4:39] Speaker 1: fly might not see where they are going. Luna's heart
[4:44] Speaker 1: squeezed with sympathy. But you're the brightest star I know.
[4:49] Speaker 1: How can I help you all the way up there?
[4:52] Speaker 1: Think stars can hear thee earth, The little star whispered,
[4:58] Speaker 1: especially the kind ones, and especially at night when the
[5:04] Speaker 1: world grows quiet. If you could help me feel rested again,
[5:10] Speaker 1: I know my sparkle would come back. Luna thought and
[5:14] Speaker 1: thought she was only a little girl. She had no
[5:21] Speaker 1: rocket ship, no ladder tall enough to reach the sky,
[5:27] Speaker 1: no magic wand what could she possibly do for a
[5:33] Speaker 1: tired old star? And then she remembered grandmother Rose. When
[5:41] Speaker 1: Luna was very small and had trouble falling asleep, Grandmother
[5:47] Speaker 1: Rose would sit beside her bed and sing a special lullaby.
[5:55] Speaker 1: It was an old, old song that grandmother's own grandmother
[6:00] Speaker 1: had taught her, a song about the moon tucking the
[6:06] Speaker 1: stars into their blanket of night. Every time Luna heard it,
[6:13] Speaker 1: her eyelids would grow heavy, her breathing would slow, and
[6:19] Speaker 1: she would drift off into the sweetest dreams. A llullaby,
[6:25] Speaker 1: Luna whispered excitedly. Little star, my grandmother taught me a
[6:31] Speaker 1: lullaby that helps everyone fall asleep. But wait, if you
[6:38] Speaker 1: fall asleep, won't your light go out? The star gave
[6:42] Speaker 1: a soft, tired chuckle like wind chimes, and a gentle breeze. Ah,
[6:49] Speaker 1: little one, you are clever to ask. But here is
[6:54] Speaker 1: a secret about stars. We do not sleep the way
[6:59] Speaker 1: people do. When a star rests, it gathers back its light,
[7:05] Speaker 1: like you gathering your blanket around yourself. A short deep
[7:11] Speaker 1: rest makes our sparkle grow stronger, not weaker. That is
[7:17] Speaker 1: why stars twinkle. You know. A twinkle is a star
[7:21] Speaker 1: taking a tiny breath, resting for just a blink, then
[7:28] Speaker 1: shining bright again. Really, Luna said her eyes wide. Twinkling
[7:35] Speaker 1: is like breathing, very much like breathing, said the star.
[7:40] Speaker 1: Your air moves and shimmers between us, which is why
[7:45] Speaker 1: our light seems to dance. But my dance has grown
[7:50] Speaker 1: slow and wobbly. I need a true rest, deep and peaceful,
[7:59] Speaker 1: and your lullaby sounds like just the thing. So Luna
[8:04] Speaker 1: climbed out of bed, wrapped her blanket around her shoulders
[8:09] Speaker 1: like a cape, and opened her window just a crack.
[8:15] Speaker 1: The cool night air kissed her cheeks. Far below, the
[8:22] Speaker 1: village was dark, and still above the skies stretched out
[8:29] Speaker 1: like an endless velvet blanket scattered with time. Luna took
[8:35] Speaker 1: a deep breath, then, in her softest, sweetest voice, she
[8:41] Speaker 1: began to sing, Hush, now, hush, now, little light, the
[8:46] Speaker 1: moon has come to guard the night. Close your glow
[8:52] Speaker 1: and rest your beams drift away on silver dreams. The
[8:58] Speaker 1: little stars flickering sa blink, blink, blink. The clouds will
[9:08] Speaker 1: rock you soft and deep while all the world is
[9:14] Speaker 1: fast asleep. And when you've rested, shine anew. The sky
[9:22] Speaker 1: is always home to you. As Luna sang, something wonderful happened.
[9:30] Speaker 1: The star's weak flickers steadied. Its light, which had been
[9:36] Speaker 1: dim and shaky, began to glow warm and even, like
[9:42] Speaker 1: a candle in a cozy room. And then slowly, gently
[9:50] Speaker 1: the star let its light rest. For a few moments,
[9:55] Speaker 1: it was only a soft ember in the sky, peaceful
[10:00] Speaker 1: and calm. Luna waited, holding her breath. Then all at once,
[10:07] Speaker 1: the little star burst back to life, brighter than Luna
[10:11] Speaker 1: had ever seen it before. It twinkled and danced, scattering
[10:17] Speaker 1: silver light across the whole sky. It shone so beautifully
[10:24] Speaker 1: that the moon seemed to smile a little wider, and
[10:28] Speaker 1: all the other stars seemed to twinkle a little faster,
[10:33] Speaker 1: as if they were applauding. Oh, the star sang out,
[10:39] Speaker 1: and now its voice was bright and full of joy. Oh,
[10:46] Speaker 1: thank you, Luna. I feel as rested as if I
[10:51] Speaker 1: had slept for a thousand years. Look at my light.
[10:56] Speaker 1: It has never sparkled. So you did it, Luna laughed,
[11:01] Speaker 1: clapping her hands softly so she wouldn't wake the house. No,
[11:06] Speaker 1: little one, the star said warmly, we did it. I
[11:11] Speaker 1: could not rest until some one kind enough to help
[11:15] Speaker 1: me came along. You see, Luna, everyone needs help sometimes,
[11:23] Speaker 1: even the moon needs the sun to make her glow,
[11:27] Speaker 1: even the sea needs the rivers to fill her up,
[11:32] Speaker 1: And even a star way up high where no one
[11:36] Speaker 1: can reach sometimes needs the voice of a friend. I
[11:41] Speaker 1: never thought a star would need me, Luna said, softly,
[11:47] Speaker 1: feeling something warm bloom in her chest. The biggest lights
[11:51] Speaker 1: in the sky need small kindnesses most of all, said
[11:56] Speaker 1: the star. And now Luna, it is your turn to rest.
[12:03] Speaker 1: You have helped me gather my sparkle, and I can
[12:07] Speaker 1: see your own eyelids growing heavy. It was true, Luna's
[12:13] Speaker 1: eyes were already drooping. She yawned, a great, big yawn.
[12:20] Speaker 1: Will you shine for me while I sleep? She asked?
[12:25] Speaker 1: Every night, promised the star. Every night, I will be
[12:31] Speaker 1: here above your old oak tree, twinkling and breathing and
[12:37] Speaker 1: watching over your dreams. And whenever you see me flicker,
[12:43] Speaker 1: you will know I am just taking a tiny rest,
[12:48] Speaker 1: gathering my light to shine for you again. Good night,
[12:52] Speaker 1: little star li Limatol, Good night, dear Luna, whispered the star.
[13:02] Speaker 1: Luna closed her window, climbed back into her bed, and
[13:07] Speaker 1: pulled the covers up to her chin. Outside, the star
[13:12] Speaker 1: twinkled brighter than any other, steady and strong and warm,
[13:20] Speaker 1: Its ancient light that had traveled for years and years,
[13:26] Speaker 1: now falling softly on her roof. As Luna snuggled into
[13:31] Speaker 1: her pillow, she thought about how the smallest voice could
[13:36] Speaker 1: help the brightest light. She thought about how twinkling was
[13:42] Speaker 1: a kind of breathing, slow and gentle, in and out,
[13:50] Speaker 1: in and out. She breathed slowly too, just like the star,
[13:59] Speaker 1: in and out, in and out, and before long Luna
[14:09] Speaker 1: was fast asleep, dreaming of silver beams and velvet skies,
[14:17] Speaker 1: while above her window, her very own star kept watch,
[14:23] Speaker 1: twinkling its soft lullaby of light, all through the peaceful
[14:29] Speaker 1: night end
