[0:04] Speaker 1: Us was to us. The wind whispered through the pine trees,
[0:12] Speaker 1: carrying the scent of falling leaves and the promise of
[0:16] Speaker 1: a deep, quiet cold. For most of the animals in
[0:21] Speaker 1: the whispering woods, this was a time to scurry and prepare.
[0:27] Speaker 1: But for a little bear named Bramble, it was a
[0:30] Speaker 1: time to worry. Bramble's first hibernation was coming. The older
[0:35] Speaker 1: bears spoke of it as a long, cozy sleep, but
[0:38] Speaker 1: Bramble wasn't so sure. The stories he'd heard from the
[0:41] Speaker 1: chattering jays made it sound like a deep, dark, endless night.
[0:46] Speaker 1: What if he slept too long, What if he got lonely?
[0:50] Speaker 1: What if he woke up and it was still winter.
[0:55] Speaker 1: His heart felt like a fluttery mouth in his chest,
[0:59] Speaker 1: he said by the stream, watching his reflection wobble in
[1:03] Speaker 1: the water. His mother was busy in their den, lining
[1:08] Speaker 1: it with soft, dry leaves and moss, humming a gentle tune.
[1:14] Speaker 1: She made it look so peaceful, But Bramble's paws trembled
[1:19] Speaker 1: just the same. Just then, a tiny chatter came from above.
[1:25] Speaker 1: A squirrel with a tail as fluffy as a milkweed pod,
[1:29] Speaker 1: skittered down a birch tree. It was Hazel, his friend.
[1:34] Speaker 1: You look as droopy as a wet dandelion, Bramble, she said,
[1:38] Speaker 1: stuffing at acorn into her cheek. What's the matter, I'm
[1:44] Speaker 1: scared of the great sleep, Bramble confessed, his voice a
[1:49] Speaker 1: low rumble. Ye jays say it's dark and cold and
[1:55] Speaker 1: last forever. Hazel twitched her nose forever. Oh, that's just
[2:01] Speaker 1: silly bear talk. My grand squirrel told me the bears
[2:04] Speaker 1: don't truly sleep the whole time. He said, It's more
[2:08] Speaker 1: like a very, very long doze. You even saw mother
[2:13] Speaker 1: Bear wake up once to have her little cubs right
[2:17] Speaker 1: there in the cozy den. Bramble's eyes widened. Really they
[2:25] Speaker 1: wake up, of course, chapped Hazel. But I'm just a squirrel.
[2:31] Speaker 1: For the real story, you should talk to Old Silas.
[2:35] Speaker 1: He's the wisest bear in the woods. He's seen more
[2:39] Speaker 1: winters than there are needles on that great big pine.
[2:43] Speaker 1: Hazel pointed with her nose to a massive moss covered
[2:47] Speaker 1: log near the edge of the meadow, thanking his friend.
[2:55] Speaker 1: Bramble took a deep breath and ambled over kay decide
[3:02] Speaker 1: the log was Old Silas. His fur was grizzled with silver,
[3:06] Speaker 1: and his eyes were the color of warm honey. He
[3:09] Speaker 1: was watching the lazy flight of the last bumble bees. Hallo,
[3:13] Speaker 1: young one, sur Les rumbled, his voice as steep and
[3:20] Speaker 1: comforting as the earth itself. Your heart is beating as
[3:26] Speaker 1: fast as a humming Bird's what troubles you on this
[3:31] Speaker 1: fine crisp day. Bramble shuffled his paths. Sir, I'm nervous
[3:38] Speaker 1: about my first hibernation. I'm afraid of the long dark sleep.
[3:45] Speaker 1: Silent smiled a slow, gentle curling of his lips. Ah,
[3:50] Speaker 1: the great sleep. It sounds like a mighty thing, doesn't it.
[3:54] Speaker 1: But let me tell you a secret, Bramble. It isn't
[3:57] Speaker 1: as sleep at all, not really. Bramble tilted his head.
[4:01] Speaker 1: It's not, no, said Silas. It is a long, peaceful doze,
[4:07] Speaker 1: a time for dreaming. And while you are dozing, your
[4:11] Speaker 1: body works a special kind of magic. Your heart, which
[4:16] Speaker 1: now beats so fast, will slow to a very slow,
[4:19] Speaker 1: quiet drum beat, just a few times a minute. Bramble listened, fascinated.
[4:26] Speaker 1: A slow drum beat, a very slow one. Silas confirmed.
[4:32] Speaker 1: And your body, which is so warm now will cool
[4:36] Speaker 1: down just a little bit to save energy. You won't
[4:40] Speaker 1: feel cold, though, abdehol tucked in a snug bed of leaves,
[4:46] Speaker 1: wrapped in your own fur, feeling as warm as a
[4:51] Speaker 1: sunbeam on a stone. But for how long, Gramble whispered,
[4:59] Speaker 1: until the world is ready for you again, Silas said kindly.
[5:03] Speaker 1: You will wake up in the spring, when the snow
[5:06] Speaker 1: has melted and the first crocuses are pushing through the soil.
[5:09] Speaker 1: You'll be hungry, of course, but you will have slept
[5:13] Speaker 1: through the coldest, darkest part of the year, safe and sound,
[5:20] Speaker 1: So it's not scary. It is the coziest time, Silas
[5:25] Speaker 1: assured him. Think of it as been wrapped in a
[5:29] Speaker 1: blanket of quiet, dreaming of salmon champing in the stream
[5:34] Speaker 1: and the sweet taste of summer berries. Your mother will
[5:39] Speaker 1: be right there with you. You are not alone. Bremble felt
[5:45] Speaker 1: the fluttery moth in his chest settle down. It wasn't
[5:49] Speaker 1: a scary, endless night, after all. It was a special
[5:53] Speaker 1: quiet time, a safe time. He looked back at Hazel,
[5:57] Speaker 1: who was watching from a branch, and gave her a
[6:00] Speaker 1: grateful nod. He hurried back to his den, where his
[6:04] Speaker 1: mother was patting the last bit of moss into place.
[6:09] Speaker 1: The entrance was hidden by a curtain of ferns, and
[6:13] Speaker 1: inside it smelled of dry earth and safety. Feeling better,
[6:19] Speaker 1: my little cub, his mother asked, nuzzling his ear, Lamber nodded.
[6:25] Speaker 1: Curling up beside her in the soft leafy bed, He
[6:28] Speaker 1: thought about what Silas had said. He wasn't going into
[6:32] Speaker 1: a dark, scary sleep. He was going into a cozy,
[6:36] Speaker 1: magical doze. His heart began to beat its own, slow,
[6:40] Speaker 1: steady rhythm, matching his mother's. He closed his eyes, picturing
[6:45] Speaker 1: the quiet drum beat in his chest and the promise
[6:49] Speaker 1: of a bright green spring waiting for him when he woke.
[6:53] Speaker 1: And just like that, with the truth in his heart
[6:58] Speaker 1: and a friend's words in his mind, Bramble the little
[7:02] Speaker 1: bear was ready for his long winter's rest, and so
[7:08] Speaker 1: are you. The den was dark, but not the kind
[7:12] Speaker 1: of dark that frightens. It was the kind that holds you,
[7:17] Speaker 1: like the space behind your mother's arms when she pulls
[7:21] Speaker 1: you close. Bramble pressed his nose into the warm fur
[7:26] Speaker 1: at her side, and her breathing was slow and stiddy,
[7:30] Speaker 1: a gentle rhythm, like waves rolling on to a quiet shore.
[7:35] Speaker 1: His own breath began to match it, long and easy
[7:39] Speaker 1: in and out, and the sounds of the forest outside
[7:43] Speaker 1: grew softer and farther away, until there were nothing more
[7:49] Speaker 1: than a lullaby made of rustling leaves and the faintest
[7:53] Speaker 1: whisper of wind. And then something wonderful happened. Bramble began
[8:01] Speaker 1: to dream. In his dream, it was summer again. Golden
[8:07] Speaker 1: light poured through the canopy like honey dripping from a spoon.
[8:12] Speaker 1: He was standing at the edge of the stream, watching
[8:16] Speaker 1: silver salmon leap and twist through the sparkling water, their
[8:21] Speaker 1: tails flicking droplets into the warm air. One of them
[8:26] Speaker 1: japped so high it seemed to touch the sky, and
[8:30] Speaker 1: Bramble laughed, a big, happy, bare laugh that echoed through
[8:35] Speaker 1: the trees. The dream shifted, as dreams do now. Soft
[8:40] Speaker 1: rain was falling, not cold winter rain, but the gentle,
[8:45] Speaker 1: warm kind that putters on green leaves and make the
[8:49] Speaker 1: whole world smell fresh and alive. Each drop made a
[8:54] Speaker 1: tiny musical sound on the leaves above him, like a
[8:58] Speaker 1: thousand little bells ringing just for him. He sat beneath
[9:03] Speaker 1: a great oak and let the rain kiss his fur,
[9:07] Speaker 1: feeling perfectly completely peaceful. Then he was rolling through a
[9:12] Speaker 1: meadow full of clover, the sweet scent filling his nose,
[9:16] Speaker 1: while butterflies with wings like painted petals drifted all around him.
[9:22] Speaker 1: Deep in his doze, Bramble's body was doing its quiet
[9:26] Speaker 1: magic without eating a single bite or drinking a single
[9:30] Speaker 1: drop of water. He was living off the rich layers
[9:34] Speaker 1: of fat he had stored all autumn long, like a
[9:38] Speaker 1: little bear pantry tucked right inside him, his body would
[9:43] Speaker 1: keep him nourished all winter, a gift from the berries
[9:47] Speaker 1: and roots and fish he had so happily gobbled up.
[9:52] Speaker 1: And sometimes just for a moment he would stir, not
[9:59] Speaker 1: quite awake, not quite dreaming, and through his mother's wound
[10:07] Speaker 1: beside him, and settle right back into the softness. So now,
[10:16] Speaker 1: little one, close your eyes too, Let your breathing slow
[10:21] Speaker 1: like brambles. Let the world grow quiet around you. Picture
[10:27] Speaker 1: warm sunshine and gentle rain, and some one who loves
[10:32] Speaker 1: you close by your side. There is nothing to worry
[10:36] Speaker 1: about to night. There is only the cozy dark and
[10:41] Speaker 1: sweet dreams waiting to find you. Good night, little bear,
[10:47] Speaker 1: Good night,
