[1:03] Speaker 1: His name is Hugo. He is seven years old, and
[1:09] Speaker 1: he lives in a blue cottage above Sleepy Harbor, where

[2:19] Speaker 1: the harbor is calm till it's soft and slow.
[2:28] Speaker 2: Hugo was seven years old, and he loved three things best.
[2:33] Speaker 2: Warm toast with jam, smooth strapped pebbles, and things that bob.
[2:39] Speaker 2: His blue cottage stood on the cliff above Sleepy Harbor,
[2:42] Speaker 2: where a crooked path wound down past the crooked fence
[2:46] Speaker 2: to a tiny wooden jetty. Six toy boats lived in
[2:50] Speaker 2: the harbor. By day, they drifted where they pleased, but
[2:54] Speaker 2: each dusk, as the sky turned dusky blue, they sailed
[2:58] Speaker 2: themselves home to their own slips, one by one. Each
[3:03] Speaker 2: boat had its own name, painted white on its blue hull. Poppy, Winkle, Pebble, Moonbeam, Starling,
[3:17] Speaker 2: and smallest of all, Drift, no longer than your hand.
[3:24] Speaker 2: At each dusk, old harbor master Tam walked the good
[3:28] Speaker 2: night round. He carried a brass lantern. He walked slow
[3:31] Speaker 2: as a sleepy crab. And at each boat he stopped,
[3:35] Speaker 2: tapped the hull twice, spoke its name soft, and wished
[3:39] Speaker 2: it sleep. On this dusk, the dusk of our story,
[3:44] Speaker 2: Hugo stood at the cottage gate in his jersey, watching
[3:47] Speaker 2: the harbor settle. One boat slid home, then two, then three.
[3:53] Speaker 2: Hugo whispered the names under his breath, the way he
[3:56] Speaker 2: did each night. Poppy, Winkle, Pebble. The water lapped soft
[4:04] Speaker 2: against the jetty lap, lap, lap. Moonbeam, Starling, the slips filled,
[4:11] Speaker 2: one by one. Five boats home, only drift still out.
[4:17] Speaker 2: The littlest boat, somewhere on the dusky water. Hugo lifted
[4:22] Speaker 2: his own small lantern and pattered down the crooked path
[4:26] Speaker 2: to walk the round with Tam. Evening, young sailor, said Tam,
[4:31] Speaker 2: slow and rumbly. Tonight you lead and I will follow.
[4:35] Speaker 2: Name them gentle, tap them twice. That is the whole round.
[4:40] Speaker 2: So Hugo stepped onto the jetty, careful and slow. The
[4:45] Speaker 2: boards creaked soft under his shoes. The water lapped, lapped.
[4:51] Speaker 3: Lap, lap, and one.
[4:54] Speaker 2: By one, Hugo stopped at each boat, tapped twice, and
[5:00] Speaker 2: spoke its name. Sleep tight, puppy, he whispered.
[5:04] Speaker 1: Tap, tap.
[5:05] Speaker 2: Sleep tight, Winkle.
[5:06] Speaker 1: Tap, tap.
[5:07] Speaker 2: Sleep tight, Pebble.
[5:08] Speaker 1: Tap, tap.
[5:09] Speaker 2: Each boat bobbed once, as if to say thank you,
[5:12] Speaker 2: and settled deeper in its slip.
[5:15] Speaker 1: Seat tight, Moonbeam.
[5:16] Speaker 4: Tap, tap.
[5:17] Speaker 2: Sleep tight, Starling.
[5:19] Speaker 1: Tap, tap.
[5:20] Speaker 2: Old Tam nodded behind him, his brass lantern swinging slow.
[5:24] Speaker 2: Fine knaving, young sailor, he rumbled, fine and gentle. Now,
[5:30] Speaker 2: while Hugo peers at the empty sixth slip, a sleepy
[5:33] Speaker 2: nod to the grown-ups. A free tale every night only
[5:37] Speaker 2: stays afloat when listeners lend an oar. The Spreaker Supporter
[5:41] Speaker 2: Club moors bonus tales inside your podcast app, while Patreon
[5:45] Speaker 2: floats every tale in early. With extra stories and longer
[5:49] Speaker 2: editions from each show in the family, you will find
[5:52] Speaker 2: both links in the show notes.
[5:54] Speaker 3: Shh, now, back to the jetty. But the sixth slip
[5:58] Speaker 3: stood empty. Drift had not come home. Hugo waited. He
[6:04] Speaker 3: counted the lapping ripples, slow as dripping honey. One, two, three.
[6:13] Speaker 3: Still empty. So he sat on the jetty edge. swung
[6:17] Speaker 3: his legs and watched the dusky water with Tam.
[6:20] Speaker 2: Do not fret, young sailor, said Tam, settling beside him,
[6:24] Speaker 2: slow and creaky. Little boats dawdle, the water will fetch him,
[6:29] Speaker 2: just listen.
[6:31] Speaker 3: So they listened.
[6:32] Speaker 2: Lap, lap, lap went the harbor.
[6:35] Speaker 4: And far out past the gray rocks, Hugo heard the
[6:38] Speaker 4: faintest answering bub. There, breathe, Hugo, there he is. Out
[6:45] Speaker 4: of the dusk slid Drift, smallest of all, riding one
[6:49] Speaker 4: last sleepy ripple. He bumped the jetty soft as a
[6:53] Speaker 4: kiss and nestled into his slip, right where he belonged.
[6:58] Speaker 4: Hugo knelt and tapped the tiny hull twice. Sleep tight, Drift,
[7:04] Speaker 4: he whispered. You sailed yourself home.
[7:07] Speaker 2: And Drift bobbed once, deep and happy, and settled still
[7:11] Speaker 2: in his slip. Old Tam lifted his brass lantern high
[7:16] Speaker 2: and all six boats bobbed together in the gold light.
[7:19] Speaker 2: Round complete, young sailor, he rumbled. The harbor sleeps. And
[7:24] Speaker 2: Hugo walked home up the crooked path, swinging his own
[7:28] Speaker 2: small lantern while the harbor lapped itself to sleep behind him.
[7:33] Speaker 2: Back at the cottage, his mama warmed apple juice in
[7:36] Speaker 2: a small pan with cinnamon stirred slow. They drank it
[7:39] Speaker 2: on the cottage step, watching the harbor rest. while the
[7:43] Speaker 2: dusk deepened and the boats bobbed, soft in their slips.
[7:47] Speaker 2: Then Hugo curled into his narrow bed under the window,
[7:50] Speaker 2: with a smooth striped pebble on the sill and the
[7:52] Speaker 2: harbor lapping far below. The night lay soft outside, full
[7:57] Speaker 2: of water sounds, and the jetty creaked its slow evening song.
[8:02] Speaker 2: That is the tale of the sleepy harbor, my friends.
[8:05] Speaker 2: Hugo named every boat home. Maybe tomorrow you can say
[8:09] Speaker 2: goodnight to everything in your room, too. Now Grandma Rose
[8:13] Speaker 2: is back to tuck the night in. Listen for her soft,
[8:16] Speaker 2: warm voice. Good night, small boats. Good night.
[8:28] Speaker 1: Was that not a lovely tale, little one? Thank you, Theo,
[8:34] Speaker 1: for telling the Hugo tale so gentle. And thank you, Hugo,
[8:40] Speaker 1: wherever you are. for showing us how good it feels
[8:44] Speaker 1: to name every boat safe home. Now it is your
[8:49] Speaker 1: turn to rest. The round is done. The boats are moored.
[8:56] Speaker 1: Your bed is warm. Everything is exactly as it should be.
[9:04] Speaker 1: Let us get sleepy together. Stay exactly as you are.
[9:12] Speaker 1: Only listen to my voice. First, pretend your bed is
[9:18] Speaker 1: a little boat in sleepy harbor. Your pillow is cool
[9:23] Speaker 1: and smooth. Your blanket is the still water, rocking you soft,
[9:28] Speaker 1: then softer, then softest of all. Side to side, side
[9:35] Speaker 1: to side, slow as the harbor. Now breathe with me.
[9:41] Speaker 1: Breathe in through your nose, slow and deep. And breathe
[9:47] Speaker 1: out through your mouth, long and slow. Let all the
[9:52] Speaker 1: day drift away across the dusky harbor. One more time,
[9:58] Speaker 1: breathe in. soft and slow, and breathe out, softer still.
[10:08] Speaker 1: Feel yourself rock one inch deeper into your boat bed. Good,
[10:15] Speaker 1: so good. Let your toes be still. Let your legs
[10:25] Speaker 1: be heavy and warm. Let your tummy rise and fall,
[10:32] Speaker 1: easy as ripples round the little boats. Let your hands
[10:38] Speaker 1: lie open and soft, and let your eyes stay closed.
[10:45] Speaker 1: for they have worked hard all day, and now they
[10:50] Speaker 1: can rest. And before you sail off to sleep, one
[10:55] Speaker 1: last gentle word for the grown-ups. These bedtime tales reach
[11:00] Speaker 1: you free, because caring listeners share the rowing. The Spreaker
