## Transcript

[0:00] Speaker 1: Rosie was supposed to be asleep. She had been tucked
[0:04] Speaker 1: in tight an hour ago, her favorite soft rabbit thistle
[0:09] Speaker 1: tucked under her chin. But the moon was so bright,
[0:14] Speaker 1: casting a silver square on her bedroom floor, and the
[0:18] Speaker 1: world outside her window was whispering. It wasn't a scary whisper.
[0:25] Speaker 1: It was a happy, rustling sort of sound, like secrets
[0:31] Speaker 1: being shared between the leaves. Slipping out of bed, her
[0:38] Speaker 1: bare feet made no sound on the wooden floor. She
[0:44] Speaker 1: padded to the window and looked down into Nana's back garden.
[0:50] Speaker 1: In the daytime, it was a place of sunny colors
[0:54] Speaker 1: and buzzing bees, But now under the moon it would different.
[1:01] Speaker 1: It was awake. Just then, a soft hand rested on
[1:08] Speaker 1: her shoulder. Rosy jumped, but the smell of lavender and
[1:13] Speaker 1: camomile told her it was Nana. Couldn't sleep, my little moonbeam.
[1:20] Speaker 1: Nana's voice was as soft as the flannel nightgown she wore.
[1:25] Speaker 1: Her silver hair glowed in the moonlight. The garden is
[1:31] Speaker 1: having a party, Rosy whispered, pointing. Nana chuckled a low,
[1:38] Speaker 1: warm sound. Ah, you have sharp eyes. Would you like
[1:44] Speaker 1: to go say hello? Rosy's heart did a happy skip.
[1:49] Speaker 1: Nana wrapped a warm shawl around Rosy's shoulders, and together
[1:55] Speaker 1: they tiptoed down the creaky stairs and out the back door.
[2:02] Speaker 1: The night air was cool and felt like velvet on
[2:06] Speaker 1: Rosy's cheeks. The smell of damp earth and the sweet,
[2:12] Speaker 1: heavy scent of jasmine from Nana's trellis filled her nose.
[2:17] Speaker 1: And the sounds not the loud hum of daytime, but
[2:22] Speaker 1: a symphony of tiny noises, the chirp of crickets, the
[2:28] Speaker 1: distant hoot of an owl, and a faint musical plank
[2:34] Speaker 1: like tiny bells. Look, Nana whispered, pointing the night shift
[2:41] Speaker 1: lamplighters are on duty. Rosy followed her finger. Dozens of
[2:48] Speaker 1: fireflies blinked their tiny lanterns on and off, drifting in lazy,
[2:56] Speaker 1: golden paths between the flower beds. They weren't in a hurry.
[3:04] Speaker 1: They painted the darkness with slow moving stars. They're not
[3:11] Speaker 1: just pretty, Rosy, Nana said. Each little flash is a signal.
[3:18] Speaker 1: It's how they find their friends in the dark, a
[3:22] Speaker 1: living language of light. As they stepped onto the soft
[3:28] Speaker 1: mossy path, something white and glorious unfurled before Rosy's eyes.
[3:35] Speaker 1: A flower she'd never seen in the daytime, was blooming.
[3:40] Speaker 1: Its petals were as white as milk and shaped like
[3:44] Speaker 1: a delicate trumpet. It seemed to glow from within. This
[3:49] Speaker 1: is moonflower, Nana explained, gently touching a petal. She's very shy.
[3:57] Speaker 1: She sleeps all day tight and only opens her face
[4:03] Speaker 1: to talk to the moon and her nighttime visitors. Rosy
[4:08] Speaker 1: leaned in and took a sniff. The perfume was strong
[4:12] Speaker 1: and sweet, much stronger than the daytime flowers. A large,
[4:18] Speaker 1: soft brown moth, its wings like dusty velvet, swooped down
[4:25] Speaker 1: and delicately landed on the moonflower's lip, its long curled
[4:32] Speaker 1: tongue uncoiled to sip the nectar. Don't forget the mushrooms,
[4:40] Speaker 1: A tiny, squeaky voice seemed to say. Rosy blinked, was
[4:46] Speaker 1: she imagining it? But Nana just smiled and led her
[4:51] Speaker 1: to the shady spot under the old apple tree. And
[4:57] Speaker 1: there they were tiny mushrooms with caps of red and
[5:04] Speaker 1: spotted white, arranged in a perfect secret circle. And in
[5:12] Speaker 1: the center two acorn caps filled with dew drops sat
[5:19] Speaker 1: like dimble sized cups there having their evening toast. Nana
[5:24] Speaker 1: murmured to the rain that helped them grow. Rosie could
[5:29] Speaker 1: almost hear the faintest clink of the dewdrop cups. She
[5:35] Speaker 1: sat on a soft patch of clover, and Nana sat
[5:39] Speaker 1: beside her, the shawl warm around them both. It's so busy,
[5:46] Speaker 1: Rosie said, wonder in her voice. I thought night time
[5:50] Speaker 1: was for sleeping for us. Yes, Mana agreed, her arm
[5:56] Speaker 1: a comforting weight around Rosy. But for many this is
[6:01] Speaker 1: the time to work and play. The night blooming flowers
[6:07] Speaker 1: open now to be pollinated by these moths. The fireflies
[6:13] Speaker 1: are searching for love with their light. The mushrooms helped
[6:16] Speaker 1: the soil stay healthy by breaking down old leaves. Everything
[6:24] Speaker 1: has its own special time. They sat in stillness for
[6:30] Speaker 1: a long while, listening. Rosy heard the faint whoosh of
[6:37] Speaker 1: bat wings overhead, and saw the glint of a hedgehog
[6:42] Speaker 1: snuffling along the garden wall, its little nouse twitching. The
[6:48] Speaker 1: world felt full and magical, but also peaceful. It wasn't
[6:54] Speaker 1: loud or rushed. It was a slow, secret dance, Nana.
[7:02] Speaker 1: Rosy whispered, her eyelids, starting to feel heavy. It's beautiful.
[7:09] Speaker 1: Why don't we see it more often? Because we're usually asleep?
[7:15] Speaker 1: Nana said, stroking her hair. And that's okay. But the
[7:22] Speaker 1: lesson of the night Garden, my sweet, is that some
[7:27] Speaker 1: of life's most beautiful moments happen in the quiet still times,
[7:35] Speaker 1: when we slow down and pay attention. It's not about
[7:39] Speaker 1: being awake all night, but about knowing the magic is
[7:44] Speaker 1: there even when you're dreaming. Just then, a firefly drifted close,
[7:53] Speaker 1: It's light blinking softly in front of Rosie's face, as
[7:59] Speaker 1: if to say good. The sweet scent of the moonflower
[8:04] Speaker 1: wrapped around her. The sound of the crickets became a gentle,
[8:09] Speaker 1: rocking lullaby. Nana felt the little body next to her
[8:14] Speaker 1: grow heavier. Time to carry my sleepy little moonbeam back
[8:19] Speaker 1: to bed, she whispered. Rosy remembered being lifted the warm shawl,
[8:27] Speaker 1: the soft sheets of her own bed tixl. The rabbit
[8:31] Speaker 1: was placed back in her arms. She could still smell
[8:36] Speaker 1: the night garden on her skin, damp earth, jasmine and
[8:43] Speaker 1: sweet flowers. As she drifted off to sleep, she dreamt
[8:50] Speaker 1: not of distant places, but of her own garden just
[8:55] Speaker 1: outside her window. She dreamt of mushroom parties, moth kisses,
[9:01] Speaker 1: and of the gentle winking lights that turned the dark
[9:06] Speaker 1: into a secret, beautiful world, and in her sleep she smiled,
[9:13] Speaker 1: knowing that when she woke, the garden would be sleeping too,
[9:18] Speaker 1: saving all its magic for another quiet, wonderful night.
