[0:00] Speaker 1: The magic acorn of compound interest. In a hollow log
[0:04] Speaker 1: deep within the sunny meadow lived a cheerful, curious squirrel
[0:09] Speaker 1: named Saffron. Saffron wasn't just good at finding acorns, she
[0:14] Speaker 1: was great at thinking about tomorrow. One day, Saffron found
[0:19] Speaker 1: a very special acorn. It wasn't bigger or shinier than
[0:24] Speaker 1: the others, But when she showed it to her grandfather,
[0:27] Speaker 1: Grandpa Oak, his eyes twinkled. Ugh Saffron, He whispered, that
[0:33] Speaker 1: is the acorn of compound interest. It's the secret to
[0:37] Speaker 1: long term financial security. What does it do, Saffron asked,
[0:43] Speaker 1: clutching the acorn tightly. It has a magical rule, Grandpa
[0:48] Speaker 1: Oak explained. If you bury it in a special savings jar,
[0:53] Speaker 1: never digging it up, it will sprout two small new
[0:57] Speaker 1: acorns every spring. But the real magic is this next spring,
[1:02] Speaker 1: the two new acorns will also sprout two new acorns each,
[1:06] Speaker 1: and so on. The older your savings get, the faster
[1:11] Speaker 1: they grow. We call that understanding asset growth. Saffron was confused.
[1:18] Speaker 1: She was used to family budgeting activities, where she simply
[1:21] Speaker 1: sorted her nuts into spending and saving piles. This sounded
[1:27] Speaker 1: much more powerful than simple addition. It's like a snowball
[1:31] Speaker 1: rolling down a hill, Grandpa Oak said, illustrating the concept.
[1:37] Speaker 1: It starts small, but the longer it rolls, the more
[1:40] Speaker 1: snow it picks up, and the faster and bigger it gets.
[1:44] Speaker 1: This is how smart grown ups handle their investment planning.
[1:49] Speaker 1: Saffron immediately put the special acorn in a clear glass
[1:53] Speaker 1: jar marked future goals. That first winter, she only had
[1:58] Speaker 1: the one acorn. Spring, just as Grandpa Oak promised. Saffron
[2:04] Speaker 1: peered into the jar and gasped. There were the original
[2:07] Speaker 1: acorn and two new tiny ones. Now she had three.
[2:13] Speaker 1: She resisted the urge to take one out to eat.
[2:16] Speaker 1: She was focused on her saving for future goals. The
[2:20] Speaker 1: second winter, she had three acorns in her jar. The
[2:25] Speaker 1: third spring came, the two tiny acorns from last year
[2:29] Speaker 1: had sprouted two new ones each for total, and the
[2:33] Speaker 1: original acorns sprouted two more. Now she had nine acorns.
[2:38] Speaker 1: Saffron raced to her grandfather. It's working. It's multiplying faster
[2:44] Speaker 1: than I can collect them. Why didn't I do this
[2:47] Speaker 1: with all my acorns? Because the compound interest acorn teaches
[2:52] Speaker 1: us patients, Saffron, Grandpa Oak said, Most animals grab the
[2:57] Speaker 1: acorns they find, for instance, spent, but the wisest creatures
[3:02] Speaker 1: know that a little bit saved early and left alone
[3:05] Speaker 1: to grow turns into a huge retirement fund later in life.
[3:11] Speaker 1: Saffron realized she hadn't done much work after that first day.
[3:15] Speaker 1: The acorns were doing all the work for her. They
[3:18] Speaker 1: were growing on their own, simply because she hadn't touched
[3:23] Speaker 1: the original savings. She thought of her friend Rusty the raccoon,
[3:28] Speaker 1: who always spent his whole allowance on shiny pebbles immediately.
[3:33] Speaker 1: Rusty had lots of shiny pebbles now, but Saffron would
[3:37] Speaker 1: have a whole mountain of acorns later. She decided to
[3:41] Speaker 1: make her compound interest acorn jar even stronger. Every month
[3:46] Speaker 1: she added one regular acorn, a small, consistent investment to
[3:51] Speaker 1: the jar. This was like giving the snowball a tiny
[3:55] Speaker 1: push every week. The growth became even more spectacular. By
[4:00] Speaker 1: the tenth spring, Saffron's long term financial security jar was
[4:05] Speaker 1: nearly full, glittering with hundreds of acorns. She had enough
[4:10] Speaker 1: to buy the whole sunny meadow a grand new picnic table,
[4:14] Speaker 1: or perhaps even fund a scholarship for young squirrels who
[4:18] Speaker 1: needed early childhood financial literacy lessons. Saffron didn't need the
[4:23] Speaker 1: money yet, but knowing it was there, growing and multiplying
[4:28] Speaker 1: made her feel calm and powerful. She had learned that
[4:32] Speaker 1: the secret to having a lot of everything was simply
[4:35] Speaker 1: starting small, being patient, and letting the magic of the
[4:39] Speaker 1: compound acorn do its work.
