[0:58] Speaker 4: Survivor player from Survivor season forty seven. He has the
[1:02] Speaker 4: patience of a saint. He is a Mergi Award winner.
[1:05] Speaker 4: He gave Rachel the lifeline that let her win the game. Guys,

[1:16] Speaker 1: that hilarious, which is why I love this podcast because
[1:21] Speaker 1: you guys are so funny. I think you like a
[1:23] Speaker 1: lot of the other podcasts that I listened to they're
[1:25] Speaker 1: so like focused on strategy, and this one I just
[1:29] Speaker 1: laugh a lot. And that's why I was like so
[1:33] Speaker 1: pumped to be on this one. So thank you for

[2:04] Speaker 4: first place, because I think it was the video where
[2:07] Speaker 4: I was calling you sexy and Kristen was commenting and
[2:11] Speaker 4: like asking if it was body oil or rain on you.
[2:14] Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah. I honestly it was either that that
[2:17] Speaker 1: one or when Chase I saw I think I saw
[2:21] Speaker 1: a TikTok by Chase where he's repinsallination and screaming at
[2:26] Speaker 1: the top of his lungs. One of those two got
[2:29] Speaker 1: me hooked, and then I've been listening ever since. So
[2:31] Speaker 1: That's how I got involved with making or started listening
[2:35] Speaker 1: to making the merge.
[2:36] Speaker 3: Yeah, Chase really does crash out like that. That wasn't
[2:39] Speaker 3: an act. Was he was furious. We all were furious
[2:43] Speaker 3: watching your experience over that season, But Chase, every time
[2:48] Speaker 3: we talked to him, was absolutely losing his mind about it.
[2:53] Speaker 5: So so.
[2:57] Speaker 3: Rise Rise where all right?
[3:02] Speaker 1: That's what I've been asking people, where the hell is
[3:04] Speaker 1: your anger? Everybody? What's the diddal?
[3:08] Speaker 4: Luckily Chase had enough anger for everybody. Yeah, I think
[3:12] Speaker 4: he took care of it. I think a lot of
[3:14] Speaker 4: Chase's frustration came from watching your frustration with Rome, And
[3:18] Speaker 4: I got to ask, how have you met Rome outside
[3:21] Speaker 4: the game? Did he threaten you outside there too? Or
[3:24] Speaker 4: was it like think's chill?
[3:25] Speaker 2: Does he follow you around threatening?
[3:28] Speaker 3: It wasn't.
[3:28] Speaker 4: It was an ultimatum.
[3:29] Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, it was an ultimatum. Let's get that right.
[3:32] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[3:32] Speaker 1: So yeah, I've hooked Rom and I have hooked up
[3:37] Speaker 1: a couple of times outside of the show. We met
[3:40] Speaker 1: at they've all been survivor events, and we talked on
[3:44] Speaker 1: the phone after the show. And then I'm just kind
[3:47] Speaker 1: of like, you know what, I have other people I'd
[3:49] Speaker 1: rather hang out with. I have other people I'd rather
[3:54] Speaker 1: talk to. So it's been it's been about let's see
[3:59] Speaker 1: our season in it in December, so it's been about
[4:02] Speaker 1: six months since I've talked to Rome.
[4:04] Speaker 3: That's what I got for you on that is that
[4:06] Speaker 3: you're not like pen pals or anything like that.
[4:09] Speaker 1: We're not pen pals. That's correct. That was off.
[4:12] Speaker 3: Guys.
[4:12] Speaker 2: Did you get PTSD watching season forty eight and seeing
[4:17] Speaker 2: Say follow Mary around the jungle where you like, oh
[4:20] Speaker 2: my god, yeah, it was.
[4:24] Speaker 1: It was. I mean they were quite similar, right, I
[4:27] Speaker 1: mean not as bad. I felt like, Say is a
[4:29] Speaker 1: little bit more. Say passes my beer test better than
[4:35] Speaker 1: Rome would pass my beer test. Yeah, yeah, And I
[4:38] Speaker 1: think that's what the vibe that she came off with
[4:41] Speaker 1: on the show, especially when she's chasing Mary around you
[4:43] Speaker 1: can and you me and Mary, I remember is going like, hey,
[4:46] Speaker 1: I respect this, this girl's playing you know, something like that.
[4:49] Speaker 1: But a little bit of PTSD did come back.
[4:52] Speaker 4: For sure, because we were all wondering, like indirectly you
[4:57] Speaker 4: kind of launched the show with the whole rooms situation
[5:00] Speaker 4: because I was talking about it is what got so
[5:02] Speaker 4: many people to tune in, and I have to ask,
[5:05] Speaker 4: was there a small part of you that briefly considered
[5:08] Speaker 4: punching Rome in the face when he was following you around?
[5:12] Speaker 1: Guys, it was. It was one of the hardest things
[5:17] Speaker 1: I've I've ever had to do in terms of self control.
[5:21] Speaker 1: I mean, you want to just go off on this
[5:27] Speaker 1: dude at the same time, like I was, I was
[5:32] Speaker 1: at the very bottom of my tribe early on in
[5:35] Speaker 1: the game. I don't know if you guys remember that
[5:36] Speaker 1: or not. And the one thing that I have, like
[5:41] Speaker 1: from a strategy standpoint, is like, Okay, this dude is
[5:45] Speaker 1: so annoying the only way and he's got an idol
[5:49] Speaker 1: and he's got a steal of vote, so he has
[5:53] Speaker 1: more power than anybody in this game, literally, right, And
[5:58] Speaker 1: the only way that I'm gonna be able to get
[6:00] Speaker 1: this dude out is if he annoys everyone else so
[6:05] Speaker 1: bad that they're like, I cannot be around this dude anymore.
[6:10] Speaker 1: And so for me to make that happen, I had
[6:14] Speaker 1: to be very chill. I could not explode Otherwise.
[6:17] Speaker 2: I'm that guy.
[6:19] Speaker 1: I'm just like Rome if I do that, and they're
[6:22] Speaker 1: gonna be like, oh God, look at Saul losing his shit,
[6:25] Speaker 1: Like you know. So that was so hard to do,
[6:29] Speaker 1: but I did it and I sent his ass home.
[6:33] Speaker 1: So sure.
[6:34] Speaker 3: Now this kind of connects to a question I have,
[6:38] Speaker 3: which is, you know, you're out there, you're tired, and
[6:42] Speaker 3: I've always wanted to ask somebody how many days or
[6:47] Speaker 3: nights does it take for you to feel like you
[6:49] Speaker 3: actually fall asleep at night out there because you're exhausted
[6:54] Speaker 3: and you're dealing with the most annoying stuff possible, and
[6:57] Speaker 3: you're probably not sleeping right away.
[6:59] Speaker 1: It took me probably about four days. Some people never
[7:03] Speaker 1: get there. Some people are just zombies out there. Do
[7:07] Speaker 1: you guys remember Jessica Chong.
[7:09] Speaker 4: I was about to bring her up because did Yeah,
[7:11] Speaker 4: she had to deal with Banu while that was happening.
[7:13] Speaker 1: Oh yeah, they were on the same drive, weren't they. Yeah. Yeah,
[7:21] Speaker 1: So a week before the game starts, we're sleeping in
[7:24] Speaker 1: Fiji in tents, you know, to get acclimated to Fiji
[7:28] Speaker 1: and sleeping on you know, your circadian rhythms versus like
[7:32] Speaker 1: an alarm clock. And that was very easy for me,
[7:37] Speaker 1: sleeping in the tents. Actually, there's across the street of
[7:41] Speaker 1: where it we're all sleeping. There were like twenty dogs
[7:44] Speaker 1: that bark their ass off. So it wasn't as it
[7:47] Speaker 1: was bottom. It was a lot easier than sleeping on
[7:51] Speaker 1: Survivor on bamboo. It took, like I said, it took
[7:55] Speaker 1: me about four days before I wasn't a zombie. And
[7:58] Speaker 1: to your point, Jonathan, like this, this is where when
[8:01] Speaker 1: you're losing, When you can't sleep and you're in an
[8:04] Speaker 1: environment you've never been, you're around people you've never seen before,
[8:07] Speaker 1: or you know you're trying to become their very best friend.
[8:10] Speaker 1: That's when the wheels are turning in your mind and
[8:13] Speaker 1: you're just thinking to yourself, well, at me at least
[8:16] Speaker 1: every negative thing possible for a while, meaning, okay, this person,
[8:21] Speaker 1: like what what am I have? I pissed them off
[8:23] Speaker 1: by saying this. You know, everything that you do, every
[8:26] Speaker 1: action that you take, you're considering that at night when
[8:29] Speaker 1: you're in bed, and you're in bed, I'm doing air quotes?
[8:33] Speaker 1: Did that piss them off? Am I looking too much
[8:36] Speaker 1: into this? It's a mind game for sure. Yeah.
[8:38] Speaker 3: I figured. I was like, there's no way anybody is
[8:41] Speaker 3: just ready to go to bed and then wakes up
[8:44] Speaker 3: the next morning like, oh yeah, I can manage the
[8:47] Speaker 3: social game perfectly fine.
[8:48] Speaker 2: Now, how is the transition coming back home? Were you
[8:53] Speaker 2: constantly waking up in the middle of night being like, oh,
[8:56] Speaker 2: there's probably a camera watching me and taking it. Did
[8:58] Speaker 2: it take you a while to be like, I actually
[9:00] Speaker 2: am alone in my house on a bed.
[9:03] Speaker 1: Well, let me go back real quick. I forgot to
[9:04] Speaker 1: mention this too, because when you are at camp and
[9:08] Speaker 1: you don't we don't know what time it is. The
[9:10] Speaker 1: moon is up, the sun is down, it's probably two
[9:12] Speaker 1: in the morning. Rome has the same energy at two
[9:18] Speaker 1: am that he does at two pm, and it's at
[9:23] Speaker 1: one hundred and twenty percent, and you're trying to go
[9:27] Speaker 1: to bed and just imagine like, hey, you know, maybe
[9:34] Speaker 1: that's what the reason it took me four days for
[9:36] Speaker 1: my brain to get adjusted to, you know, that type
[9:39] Speaker 1: of level of energy at two in the morning. But
[9:42] Speaker 1: brand it it. I'm not much of a guy who
[9:47] Speaker 1: is depressed. That's just not my in my nature. But
[9:52] Speaker 1: when I came home, I went right back to work.
[9:55] Speaker 1: I flew back, I landed to JFK on a Saturday,
[9:58] Speaker 1: went back to work on on Monday, and it was
[10:02] Speaker 1: go yeah, And that messed me up because if you
[10:07] Speaker 1: guys try like this science project here or whatever. Put
[10:12] Speaker 1: your phones away for a week. Hell, put it away
[10:14] Speaker 1: for a weekend. Don't watch anything, no screens, right, just
[10:17] Speaker 1: for two days, hang out with your friends, and then
[10:20] Speaker 1: all of a sudden, get back into it on Monday.
[10:23] Speaker 1: You'll get a little taste of it, and it fucks
[10:25] Speaker 1: you up a little bit. I can't explain it. I
[10:27] Speaker 1: don't know why it does that, but there's something about
[10:32] Speaker 1: taking that away and then bringing it back to you
[10:34] Speaker 1: in one day. And then all of a sudden, you're
[10:37] Speaker 1: in a car. You know, you're driving down the freeway.
[10:41] Speaker 1: It's it all kind of just you just kind of
[10:43] Speaker 1: like triggered a little bit with every little thing.
[10:46] Speaker 2: And you're also in New York. That's like at eleven,
[10:49] Speaker 2: Like it's like.
[10:50] Speaker 1: Well, I'm in I'm in Connecticut, but yeah, I mean
[10:52] Speaker 1: it's it's an hour and hour from New York City.
[10:54] Speaker 2: Yeah, so flying into JFK, I imagine. Yeah, just sounds glory.
[10:59] Speaker 1: And what is all this, whether or not you're on
[11:03] Speaker 1: survivor Jeff, where you.
[11:06] Speaker 4: Like take me back. I don't want to land. I
[11:08] Speaker 4: want to be back on Jeff's I.
[11:10] Speaker 1: Did have a lot of that, Like I was like, ah,
[11:12] Speaker 1: I mean, look, I love being outside now, Like I
[11:16] Speaker 1: am very intentional about that. Before I didn't give a shit,
[11:20] Speaker 1: you know, but it's it does something to you.
[11:22] Speaker 4: Wow, Now you get to be outside without somebody following
[11:25] Speaker 4: you around, unless it's your family, you know, in that case,
[11:28] Speaker 4: it's the right thing.
[11:29] Speaker 1: Right.
[11:30] Speaker 4: There's something I wanted to ask you about this, like
[11:32] Speaker 4: pre you landing on the island. I want to ask
[11:36] Speaker 4: about Jeff's infamous FaceTime calls that he does with the
[11:40] Speaker 4: contestants where he hypes it up. He's like, oh, I
[11:42] Speaker 4: love it. It's my favorite thing. I just call him
[11:44] Speaker 4: out of the blue. So what is it like to
[11:46] Speaker 4: just be going about your day and then you get
[11:48] Speaker 4: a FaceTime and Jeff Probes is staring at you.
[11:50] Speaker 1: It's pretty fucking wild. I mean, we don't know that
[11:54] Speaker 1: it's Jeff. You know, you're you move on in the process,
[11:58] Speaker 1: and it's like, okay, you got another interview. You're like cool,
[12:00] Speaker 1: and that alone, right, that alone, You're already pumped up.
[12:04] Speaker 1: You're already you can't sleep because it's like, okay, I'm
[12:07] Speaker 1: one step closer to playing Survivor. And then the next thing,
[12:11] Speaker 1: you know, it's Jeff and for me, I was very surprised,
[12:18] Speaker 1: but I needed to quickly go back down and be normal,
[12:23] Speaker 1: be myself because I remember reading or seeing something like
[12:29] Speaker 1: where people kind of flip out when they see him
[12:32] Speaker 1: and it kind of loses their chances of being on
[12:34] Speaker 1: the show because they are not able to handle, you know,
[12:38] Speaker 1: that type of scene with with someone famous. So yeah,
[12:43] Speaker 1: it's it's it's definitely a shocker. But I brought myself
[12:47] Speaker 1: down really quickly and like, Okay, this is you have
[12:49] Speaker 1: a job to do here, so let's get it done.
[12:51] Speaker 5: Yeah.
[12:51] Speaker 4: I don't know how. I mean, Jonathan, how would you
[12:53] Speaker 4: respond if Jeff did that to you? I?
[12:56] Speaker 3: You know, I think I would have a moment where
[13:00] Speaker 3: I had to just be like, hey, can we take
[13:01] Speaker 3: a moment and address the fact that this is the
[13:03] Speaker 3: craziest thing that's.
[13:04] Speaker 2: Ever happened to me?
[13:06] Speaker 3: Like I feel like there's no way I'd be able
[13:08] Speaker 3: to just continue the conversation like oh yeah, hey Jeff,
[13:12] Speaker 3: Like I would have to address it and then be
[13:14] Speaker 3: like all right, let's let's actually hit it now and
[13:17] Speaker 3: talk about it. I My question for you too, is
[13:21] Speaker 3: with that beginning process, like you find out you're gonna
[13:25] Speaker 3: be on it, like at that point, what do you
[13:29] Speaker 3: start having to prepare in your own life to get
[13:33] Speaker 3: to Fiji? You know what I mean? Like what needs
[13:36] Speaker 3: to happen at that point for you?
[13:37] Speaker 1: You're saying, like what did I do to prepare?
[13:40] Speaker 3: Well, I mean, let's say just a mix of things
[13:42] Speaker 3: where you're like, Okay, I'm going to Fiji. I have
[13:46] Speaker 3: to like uproot and be gone for this amount of time. Yeah,
[13:49] Speaker 3: like what do I need to prepare? I guess physically,
[13:52] Speaker 3: but then also just with your own life every day,
[13:54] Speaker 3: what needed to be set.
[13:56] Speaker 2: There's a lot of ducks to get in a round.
[13:57] Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, like all the ducks. Man, what had happened
[13:59] Speaker 3: to him?
[14:00] Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah? Put them ducks in them in the row
[14:02] Speaker 1: for sure. Okay, okay, Okay, my ducks are weird and
[14:08] Speaker 1: I'm weird, and that's okay. So like I started training,
[14:12] Speaker 1: I used to I hired two trainers or three trainers,
[14:16] Speaker 1: one for the physical component, one for the mental component.
[14:22] Speaker 1: While doing physical stuff, so for example, like I would
[14:26] Speaker 1: do like a I'm doing air quotes again, Sorry I
[14:28] Speaker 1: forgot that this is.
[14:29] Speaker 4: A Hey Jonathan does visual bits all the time.
[14:33] Speaker 1: But I would do a challenge, right, and then the
[14:36] Speaker 1: the guy would like ask me math questions, which this
[14:39] Speaker 1: Korean ain't good at math. So I was like, bro,
[14:42] Speaker 1: switch it up to like something else, like give me
[14:45] Speaker 1: like a literature question or something. So just to get
[14:50] Speaker 1: my like when my heart rate was up and I'm
[14:52] Speaker 1: I'm exhausted, to get my brain able to think at
[14:55] Speaker 1: the same time, like I would do that. I in
[15:00] Speaker 1: sales and I have a lot of customers, so I
[15:02] Speaker 1: had to tell them I'm going to be away for
[15:06] Speaker 1: a long time without telling them what I'm doing, which
[15:10] Speaker 1: was a lot of fun. Yeah, I'll tell you what though.
[15:14] Speaker 1: Coming back home, the customers that I work with, they
[15:18] Speaker 1: love Saul.
[15:19] Speaker 3: And look, you're looking at a former salesman here too.
[15:24] Speaker 3: I worked sales. I worked cold calls, I worked account management.
[15:28] Speaker 3: I've seen right, and I can only imagine the stuff
[15:33] Speaker 3: that was able to land after you were like you
[15:35] Speaker 3: remember Survivor, right, you know, like.
[15:38] Speaker 1: I've asked that question about a thousand times.
[15:41] Speaker 3: That's what we call leverage in this.
[15:46] Speaker 4: Did you know that show still on and I was
[15:48] Speaker 4: on it?
[15:49] Speaker 1: Yeah, Yeah, that's pretty much that. That's pretty much how
[15:51] Speaker 1: I start off every conversation, especially if I'm trying to
[15:54] Speaker 1: get something.
[15:55] Speaker 3: You could always say something like, you know, you think
[15:58] Speaker 3: I'm not going to stick with you all the way
[16:00] Speaker 3: through the sales process. Just look at how long I
[16:02] Speaker 3: was able to stick with Rome in that scenario in Fiji.
[16:06] Speaker 3: I was there the whole time. Guys, I'm gonna stay
[16:08] Speaker 3: with you through the process.
[16:09] Speaker 1: No, And then it's like, oh, you haven't seen me
[16:11] Speaker 1: on television. Okay, well let me just send you this link.
[16:14] Speaker 1: Here you go.
[16:15] Speaker 2: So it's the best of Saul on YouTube.
[16:17] Speaker 4: I don't know.
[16:19] Speaker 1: Pretty great.
[16:20] Speaker 2: You get your ducks in a row, you do the show,
[16:23] Speaker 2: and then you come home. How hard is it to
[16:27] Speaker 2: not constantly replay every interaction, every conversation that you have
[16:34] Speaker 2: throughout the time on Survivor because a lot of Survivor
[16:37] Speaker 2: is obviously strategy. Some of it is luck, some of
[16:40] Speaker 2: it is the people that you're placed with, Some of
[16:41] Speaker 2: it is whether this happens this day, when's the merge happen?
[16:44] Speaker 2: All that stuff is out of your hands. How hard
[16:47] Speaker 2: is it for you after the game to not let
[16:51] Speaker 2: that kind of consume your life, thinking like I could
[16:54] Speaker 2: have done this, I should have done that. Or were
[16:56] Speaker 2: you able to kind of throw your hands up pretty
[16:58] Speaker 2: early or was that a process for you.
[17:01] Speaker 1: It was. It came and went in waves. Like early on.
[17:05] Speaker 1: I wasn't on like the first two or three episodes
[17:08] Speaker 1: much the first two, so not much going on there.
[17:13] Speaker 1: The wave was low, and then high tide started to
[17:16] Speaker 1: come around once I was about to be voted out,
[17:20] Speaker 1: and it's like, damn it, why did I give that
[17:23] Speaker 1: to Rachel? You know, why didn't I give it to Tiana?
[17:27] Speaker 1: There was like early on, Genevieve came up to me
[17:32] Speaker 1: and was like, Yo, let's let's work together, but let
[17:35] Speaker 1: not let anybody know about this. And I was kind
[17:38] Speaker 1: of hesitant about it for for a few reasons. And yeah,
[17:45] Speaker 1: it's it's it is very hard. I still do it, man,
[17:49] Speaker 1: because it's it's a game that I feel like I
[17:51] Speaker 1: could have won. At the same time, though, I don't
[17:55] Speaker 1: want it to be overshadowed by the fact that I'm
[17:57] Speaker 1: so grateful that I got to play. I loved playing.
[18:01] Speaker 1: I loved all the moments that I had playing. But yeah, occasionally,
[18:06] Speaker 1: not nearly as bad as it used to be. I
[18:08] Speaker 1: do have second thoughts, and I do have regrets of
[18:11] Speaker 1: things that I have done in that game, but I've
[18:14] Speaker 1: also applied those regrets to things that I've learned about
[18:17] Speaker 1: myself and it really just changed me as a person,
[18:22] Speaker 1: uh in a in a really great way.
[18:24] Speaker 4: That's awesome. And I also replay stuff from your season,
[18:28] Speaker 4: like I get mad at stuff like what I'll go
[18:32] Speaker 4: into it when Teeny and Kashawn decided to keep Rome
[18:35] Speaker 4: and go with his plan and then vote out Asia.
[18:38] Speaker 1: What the fun? Guys, I know, get mad about it? No, okay,
[18:46] Speaker 1: so I'll give you some background there. As soon as
[18:49] Speaker 1: we get to As soon as we get to our beach,
[18:53] Speaker 1: Rome goes searching for idols and it's obvious. I shit
[19:00] Speaker 1: you not, guys. Let me just see if I can find.
[19:03] Speaker 3: He's looking for a room.
[19:05] Speaker 2: WHOA check the well.
[19:09] Speaker 1: This is a little pin here, Okay, this is about

[24:34] Speaker 1: a little bit of it, but really it was the
[24:38] Speaker 1: greatest thing that happened to me was after the game,
[24:41] Speaker 1: you know, watching yourself on TV and you just kind
[24:46] Speaker 1: of I'm pretty critical in myself in a great way,
[24:51] Speaker 1: not in a bad way like where I'm dwelling on things.
[24:53] Speaker 1: It's like, what can I improve on? Well, how can
[24:55] Speaker 1: I get better? And I felt like early on my
[25:00] Speaker 1: energy was quite low on the show, and it didn't
[25:04] Speaker 1: really pick up until later on, until after Rome got
[25:07] Speaker 1: voted out to be honest, and I've asked myself a
[25:10] Speaker 1: lot like why why was Why were you like that? Saul?
[25:14] Speaker 1: And so that's probably been the greatest gift afterwards, to
[25:20] Speaker 1: like work on myself on like the public speaking aspect
[25:23] Speaker 1: of it all, because those are these are things that
[25:26] Speaker 1: never happened to me before survivor where I'm asked to
[25:29] Speaker 1: present to the University of Oklahoma or talk to the
[25:34] Speaker 1: boys and Girls clubs. You know, these things I never did,
[25:38] Speaker 1: but now I'm doing them and it's a lot of fun.
