[0:01] Welcome to Grounded Wellness, your go to podcast for
[0:04] simplified and trusted information on how to live a
[0:07] more non-toxic and holistic life.
[0:10] We're your hosts. I'm Bethany McDaniel, founder of
[0:13] Primarily Pure biohacking enthusiast and mom of three.
[0:16] And I'm Courtney O'Connor, holistic esthetician with over
[0:19] 15 years experience in the healing power of touch and
[0:23] holistic skin care rituals. Let's dig in.
[0:31] Welcome to Grounded Wellness. I'm Courtney, primarily Pure's
[0:35] holistic aesthetician. I'm here on our regenerative
[0:38] farm, grounding in my bare feet and so excited for today's solo
[0:44] episode. Today I am answering some of
[0:47] your top questions from what are my skin care non negotiables?
[0:51] What are my top tips to treat active breakouts?
[0:55] What are some low budget lifestyle practices and my best
[1:00] bridal beauty tips which I am currently doing to prep for my
[1:03] own wedding right now? Let's dig in.
[1:05] The first question I received from you guys is what is your
[1:08] skin care routine and non negotiables for products?
[1:12] I love this question so much and I feel like this is a super
[1:16] important foundation for everyone to figure out.
[1:20] So these are my personal non negotiables for skin care and I
[1:23] hope they inspire you to discover your own too.
[1:26] Number one is no fragrance. This is a hard no for me and any
[1:32] of the products that I use on my skin for my body, beauty and
[1:37] home. Fragrance is actually a known
[1:39] endocrine disruptor and it's also known as the new second
[1:43] hand smoke. So this is how serious applying
[1:47] or inhaling this ingredient can be.
[1:50] I definitely want to have babies one day, especially now that I'm
[1:53] getting married soon and with infertility rates on the rise.
[1:57] I want to do everything within my power to make the best
[2:00] choices for my body and my future babies.
[2:03] So surrounding myself with fragrance just does not fit into
[2:06] my self health or skin care routines #2 non negotiable is
[2:12] getting both water and oil on my skin and in my body.
[2:17] I say this all the time but it's true.
[2:19] Aging is simply drying out. So for youthful skin and a
[2:23] healthy body, hydration is foundational.
[2:26] And for a balanced moisture barrier and a natural glow, skin
[2:30] needs both water and oil. So topically this looks like
[2:35] spritzing skin with a facial mess with plant hydrosols.
[2:38] My favorite is our clear I missed and then while the skin
[2:42] is still damp, applying a facial serum or facial cream.
[2:46] Ours that primarily pure are oil based and animal based to
[2:49] rebuild and really lock in moisture levels.
[2:52] And then internally also obviously makes a big impact on
[2:56] skin health. So adding natural electrolytes
[2:59] or minerals into the water that you're consuming to help boost
[3:03] the absorption more deeply into your cells and enhance hydration
[3:07] in the body. And also, of course, consuming
[3:10] lots of healthy fats like fatty fish.
[3:12] Shout out to sardines, olive oil and avocados, really to help
[3:17] support hormone health, gut health, and brain health, which
[3:20] all also impact skin health and #3 is a skin amylism.
[3:27] If it takes 20 minutes or if it requires 10 steps, I'm not
[3:30] interested. Less is more when it comes to
[3:33] skin care, and because benefits build over time and consistency
[3:38] is needed to see results, I need a routine that I'll actually
[3:42] stick with and genuinely look forward to.
[3:45] A Skinmalism skin care routine is a sustainable skin care
[3:49] routine. Plus, less products are actually
[3:52] better for your microbiome as it helps to protect the diversity
[3:56] and replenish nutrients in the skin.
[3:59] My skinnimalism routine typically includes a cleansing
[4:03] oil, but just at night. In the morning, I typically
[4:06] splash my skin with water. Then I'll go in with our
[4:10] clarifying mist. This mist is a must for me, both
[4:13] AM and PM. And then of course the facial
[4:17] serum while my skin is still a dampened Dewey.
[4:19] And I'll rotate our facial serums depending on how my skin
[4:23] is feeling and what it needs that day.
[4:25] And then I'll finish with either our plumping cream or our
[4:29] antioxidant balm. These animal based bombs contain
[4:33] tallow from grass fed cows and it creates such a youthful Dewey
[4:37] glow on my skin. And then of course incorporating
[4:40] some kind of facial tool in my routine, whether it's daily or a
[4:44] few times a week, even just fitting in a 2 minute facial
[4:47] massage makes a huge difference for skin health.
[4:50] So that leads me into my favorite and final non
[4:53] negotiable which is facial tools.
[4:56] Facial massage truly is the foundation for radiant skin and
[5:00] even a calm mindset. Ancient beauty tools like Washa
[5:05] cupping and dry brushing work with the functions of the skin
[5:09] and the systems below the surface to kick start lymphatic
[5:13] drainage and blood flow while releasing muscular tension and
[5:18] even stagnant emotions. If you really want to see a
[5:21] positive change in your skin then I highly recommend making
[5:25] facial tools one of your non negotiables as well.
[5:28] The next question that I received, if I had to choose
[5:32] just one, would I choose the facial cupping or facial dry
[5:37] brushing? Which first of all, I feel like
[5:39] this question is kind of like the question, if you had to pick
[5:41] one kid, which one would you pick?
[5:43] I feel like that's an impossible one to answer.
[5:46] So I'm just going to briefly describe the benefits and the
[5:49] differences of each of these tools and then maybe it might
[5:53] help me create more of a clearer answer afterwards.
[5:57] So first of all, facial cupping. I love how this traditional
[6:02] Chinese medicine tool is both grounding and invigorating all
[6:07] at the same time. This suction technique increases
[6:11] microcirculation and oxygen rich blood flow to boost skin's
[6:15] natural glow while also clearing away blockages in the lymphatic
[6:19] system and softening the look of wrinkles, so it helps to de puff
[6:24] and plump naturally. Also, facial cupping is very
[6:28] effective at reducing any scarring.
[6:31] The beauty of this ancient ritual is that it only needs to
[6:35] be done three times a week, so it's super easy to implement
[6:38] into your weekly skin care routine.
[6:41] Then facial dry brushing is truly one of the best daily skin
[6:45] care habits and it takes only less than two minutes.
[6:49] I like to think of this tool as a 2 for one treatment as it
[6:53] activates lymphatic drainage to detoxify the skin tissue and
[6:57] create clear skin from within, but it also helps to buff away,
[7:01] build up on the surface of the skin, helping to gently
[7:04] exfoliate and refine skin texture.
[7:07] Both facial cupping and dry brushing offer different but
[7:11] supportive benefits and I personally love having a variety
[7:14] of tools to reach for depending on what my skin is needing and
[7:19] how I'm feeling that day. The next question that came
[7:22] through is what practices can I incorporate in my lifestyle on a
[7:27] low budget? I love this question because I
[7:31] am all about easy, accessible, and when possible free practices
[7:36] to promote holistic health. So here are a few of my favorite
[7:40] low budget holistic lifestyle practices.
[7:43] The first one is grounding. This one is a given and it's
[7:47] what we're doing here on Grounded Wellness on our
[7:49] regenerative farm. Just getting outside barefoot on
[7:53] the earth begins to ground the emotional body.
[7:57] It lowers inflammation levels, it fortifies your immune system,
[8:01] It resets the nervous system and supports our circadian rhythms.
[8:06] But if you're in a cold climate and maybe you're buried under
[8:09] snow for most of the year, you can also purchase a pair of
[8:13] grounding shoes or a grounding mat so that you can receive the
[8:16] Earth's healing properties all year long.
[8:19] Next is oil pulling. All you need is coconut oil for
[8:24] this one. And oil pulling promotes a
[8:26] healthier oral microbiome, which also impacts your skin
[8:30] microbiome. Simply swish coconut oil in your
[8:33] mouth first thing in the morning for about 5 to 10 minutes.
[8:37] And this is what I like to have it stack.
[8:39] So while I'm oil pulling, that's when I'll prep my morning coffee
[8:42] or begin making breakfast. Then simply spit it into the
[8:46] trash and finish with your complete oral care routine.
[8:50] Doing this daily helps to detoxify your entire body.
[8:53] It even helps to define your jawline and ease any jaw pain
[8:58] you might be experiencing. Plus, I've personally noticed a
[9:01] significant difference in how white my teeth become.
[9:05] My dentist has even noticed when I do this practice regularly.
[9:10] The next low budget lifestyle practice is stillness and
[9:13] sunlight. Watching a sunrise or sunset has
[9:17] serious health benefits as it contains higher levels of red
[9:21] light at these times, plus habit.
[9:23] Stacking this with times of stillness can have a significant
[9:26] impact on your nervous system, quality of sleep, and emotional
[9:30] regulation. God has truly given us so many
[9:34] free gifts in nature that are truly life changing.
[9:38] Plus, sitting in stillness, focusing on diaphragmatic
[9:41] breathing, practicing gratitude, and being mindful of our body
[9:45] all help us engage our parasympathetic nervous system
[9:49] and help to heal at a root level.
[9:52] And lastly, I probably sound like a broken record when it
[9:55] comes to this, but it's because it's so powerful and creates
[9:59] such positive change in your body, skin, and mindset.
[10:02] But it's facial massage and all you need for facial massage are
[10:05] your hands. So focusing on facial massage
[10:08] offers so many positive benefits for your skin and the systems
[10:12] below the surface such as lymphatic drainage, circulation,
[10:16] and faster release. And when you touch your skin,
[10:19] you're truly touching your nervous system.
[10:22] And we could all benefit from a little bit more nervous system
[10:25] regulation in our day-to-day lives.
[10:28] I have several videos of facial massage tutorials and tips that
[10:32] you can check out on our YouTube and even a previous Grounded
[10:35] Wellness podcast episode. The next question is how to
[10:39] treat active breakouts. I'm going to keep this answer
[10:43] pretty simple because you don't need a complex acne routine to
[10:47] see results. So #1 using a cleansing oil that
[10:50] doesn't disrupt your microbiome. Clear skin starts with a
[10:54] balanced microbiome, and the first step in your routine can
[10:57] either make it or break it. Plus, the worm washcloth removal
[11:01] and your oil cleansing routine helps to soften the skin and
[11:05] open and purify your pores for greater acne healing.
[11:08] Next is using products with white Willow bark instead of
[11:12] salicylic acid, which is a really popular acne fighting
[11:16] ingredient, but it's also an endocrine disruptor.
[11:19] White Willow bark is a natural form of salicylic acid, and it's
[11:23] found in our clarifying mask that you can use as a spot
[11:26] treatment to help reduce redness, prevent scarring, and
[11:30] expedite healing. And finally, focus on lymphatic
[11:34] drainage, either with just your hands or with your favorite
[11:37] facial tool. Always work around any active
[11:40] breakouts to open up pathways of healing to the impacted area.
[11:45] But if you do have inflamed acne all over your face, simply
[11:48] focusing on the neck flow will begin to open up these pathways
[11:51] of drainage and detoxification and will ultimately reduce
[11:55] inflammation on the face. For an added tip, warm your
[11:59] guashaw, stone or roller in hot water and then place it directly
[12:03] over the breakout to reduce redness and swelling.
[12:08] The next question is what do you recommend to reduce fight or
[12:12] flight symptoms? This is such an important
[12:15] question because true holistic skin healing starts by sedating
[12:20] our sympathetic nervous system, which is our fight or flight
[12:23] response, and engaging our parasympathetic regulation,
[12:28] which is our rest and digest response.
[12:31] So to reverse our fight or flight symptoms, we need to
[12:34] prioritize practices that promote our parasympathetic
[12:38] nervous system and incorporate more vagus nerve exercises.
[12:43] The vagus nerve is our longest cranial nerve.
[12:46] It's also our brain and gut axis and it helps return the nervous
[12:50] system to a regulated state. So here are some simple and
[12:54] practical ways to engage your parasympathetic nervous system
[12:58] and activate your vagus nerve. First is to get outside and even
[13:02] better if you're barefoot. I know I just mentioned how
[13:05] grounding is one of my low budget lifestyle practices and
[13:09] it's really key in supporting our parasympathetic nervous
[13:12] system. The fresh air, the sunlight, the
[13:15] earth beneath your feet can immediately help to expand your
[13:18] perspective, slow your breathing rate, lower your heart rate, and
[13:23] balance your nervous system #2 is to get moving.
[13:28] Getting blood flow and lymphatic fluid going can help to relieve
[13:32] stress and even support a more regulated nervous system.
[13:36] A simple walk around the neighborhood, bouncing on a
[13:39] rebounder, or simple restorative stretches on a mat can be easy
[13:43] ways to move your body and move out any stagnant emotions.
[13:47] The next one is get quiet. In our world of consumption and
[13:53] comparison, anxiety and burnout, I believe that stillness is the
[13:59] antidote. Carve out time first thing in
[14:01] the morning or before bed for a few minutes of stillness
[14:05] meditation, maybe even doing legs up the wall to recalibrate
[14:09] your nervous system and to allow your mind and body to rest.
[14:14] Lastly is get connected. Positive social relationships
[14:18] are vital when it comes to reducing stress and feeling
[14:22] safe. Celebrating life's mountaintop
[14:24] moments or bearing one another's burdens in the midst of a sad or
[14:28] stressful season can offer the strength and support needed to
[14:32] keep going. Call a friend to get a coffee
[14:35] date on the calendar and feel the difference.
[14:37] When you live a life that's connected.
[14:40] The more you incorporate these practices, the more you'll be
[14:43] able to build resilience to stress and create a more
[14:46] balanced way of living. And the last question today is
[14:50] what is the best skin care routine for my face and body
[14:53] before my wedding? This is the most exciting
[14:57] question I have ever answered because I am currently in my
[15:00] engaged era and also prepping for my own wedding and at 37
[15:04] years old this man was worth the wait.
[15:07] And our journey is wildly divine and an only God story.
[15:10] So if you are also a bride to be, of course we want to look
[15:14] and feel our best and be the most grounded glowing versions
[15:18] of ourselves for our big day. Here are my bridal beauty goals
[15:22] and what I'm doing to get there. And I will note that a lot of
[15:26] these practices I have been implementing for quite some
[15:29] time, but now I have a new intention and motivation behind
[15:33] them becoming a bride. So I hope this list inspires you
[15:37] as well in creating your own wedding Wellness plan.
[15:40] First, my skin goals are Dewey and defined.
[15:44] So to focus on creating Dewey skin, it really starts from
[15:49] within. So I'm prioritizing hydration
[15:52] and starting my day with a glass of water with lemon chia seeds
[15:58] and sea salt to really boost that absorption more deeply into
[16:01] my cells. And I'm drinking nettle tea
[16:04] infusions for stronger, healthier hair, nails and skin.
[16:08] My Dewey Daily Skin Care Your routine consists of a cleansing
[16:13] oil, of course, Facial dry brushing daily, which helps to
[16:17] gently nudge along that cellular renewal and detoxify and
[16:22] brighten my skin. The clarifying mist is my
[16:25] favorite. I'll even keep it in my bag and
[16:27] spritz it throughout the day. It contains green tea which
[16:30] helps to brighten and balance. The plumping serum is my
[16:35] obsession because it has Puccio which is a natural retinol
[16:39] alternative along with green coffee oil.
[16:41] So lots of antioxidants along with caffeine.
[16:44] And then of course, the plumping cream, which has that tallow
[16:47] from grass fed cows, which contains a ton of fatty acids
[16:51] for rebuilding my moisture and then finishing, especially at
[16:54] night for slugging as we're getting into more colder winter
[16:59] months, is the antioxidant bone. And this also has the green
[17:02] coffee oil and acoxanthin, which is one of nature's most potent
[17:06] antioxidants. So it really helps to restore
[17:09] dull, dehydrated skin. And then finishing with facial
[17:13] guacha because better flow equals brighter glow.
[17:16] Then for my body goals, I really want to focus on creating softer
[17:21] skin and a stronger body. So movement obviously is
[17:26] essential. So I'm prioritizing Pilates,
[17:29] stretching and rebounding for that lymphatic support.
[17:33] And I'm prioritizing and investing in professional
[17:36] massages for lymphatic drainage and deep relaxation during the
[17:40] season. And then of course, at home, my
[17:44] body care routine consists of body dry brushing.
[17:47] This is the best for supporting that daily lymphatic drainage
[17:51] and really softening skin texture.
[17:54] I'll use our body Polish in the shower, which I'm obsessed.
[17:57] It creates extremely soft skin, keeps my skin super moisturized
[18:02] and smooth. Then All Spirits are Everything
[18:05] spray just to keep my skin clear from head to toe and it's
[18:08] perfect for post shaving or post waxing and then finishing with
[18:12] body butter which again has those biocompatible animal based
[18:16] ingredients to give my skin such a great glow.
[18:21] I'm also focusing on protein rich meals and supplementing
[18:26] with collagen, cod liver oil, liver capsules, and prenatals
[18:31] for bridal and baby prep. I'm also really prioritizing red
[18:36] light therapy. I noticed such a difference in
[18:40] the visibility of my fine lines and the evenness of my skin tone
[18:44] when I'm doing my red light therapy regularly.
[18:47] And I will have it stacked this at night before bedtime while
[18:50] doing my legs up the the wall and listening to a meditation.
[18:54] And then finally, I'm definitely prioritizing professional skin
[18:57] treatments. I'm doing derma planning and the
[19:00] buccal intraoral sculpting facial massage to really release
[19:04] any muscular tension and create more sculpted to find appearance
[19:08] for my big day. And then also focusing on some
[19:10] back facials for my wedding dress.
[19:14] And lastly, my sole goals are to feel relaxed and full of faith
[19:21] in this preparatory season for getting married.
[19:24] So in the morning, I'm prioritizing getting sunshine
[19:28] and earthing to start my day grounded and to support my
[19:32] circadian rhythms and stress levels in the season.
[19:35] I'm going on evening walks with friends to unwind after a long
[19:39] day and to stay connected with the people I love.
[19:43] I am doing mouth taping every night.
[19:46] This helps to promote better breathing, deeper sleep, and it
[19:50] defines your jawline. I am being very prayerful
[19:54] through my wedding planning. God wrote our love story and
[19:57] He's going to write our wedding story too.
[20:00] And I'm inviting people I trust into this journey and just
[20:02] having those safe people in my circle that I can verbally
[20:05] process with in times of celebration, in times of stress.
[20:10] And then I am focusing on just slowing down my breathing and my
[20:14] body before going to bed and really prioritizing that bedtime
[20:18] routine, whether it's a meditation app, my Lectio Dulina
[20:21] app, or listening to binary old beats to help promote deeper
[20:24] sleep. And finally, just giving
[20:27] gratitude and praying thank you prayers.
[20:29] So really starting all my prayers from a place of
[20:32] thankfulness in this season. If you are in your own engaged
[20:36] era or still waiting for your divine love story to unfold, I
[20:40] hope that these holistic practices help to prepare your
[20:42] skin, your body, and your soul for your big day.
[20:46] And of course, a lifetime of beauty and well-being and love
[20:49] to follow. I'm truly so grateful for your
[20:53] trust in me and primarily pure and that you guys value our
[20:56] perspectives and inputs to help support your holistic health.
[21:00] We'll see you next time on Grounded Wellness.
