[0:00] Speaker 1: All right, everyone. On today's episode of Nothing Major, we've
[0:02] Speaker 1: had an awesome interview with Deanna Schneider, and we also
[0:05] Speaker 1: have life advice and fan questions. So let's get going. Jack, John, Stevie,
[0:10] Speaker 1: and Sam. Got close a few times, never won a slam.
[0:13] Speaker 1: Nothing Major. All right, everyone. Welcome back. I got Stevie
[0:16] Speaker 1: and myself. John left us go golfing, of all things, today.
[0:20] Speaker 1: He had a very, very important tee time that he
[0:22] Speaker 1: could not miss. So he's not committed. Also got Charlie
[0:26] Speaker 1: Fox and the team at SIFT here.
[0:27] Speaker 2: And.
[0:30] Speaker 1: It's a Thursday. What's going on this week? Queens, Halle, Berlin.
[0:36] Speaker 1: But most importantly, we have a Diana, Deanna, we'll get
[0:40] Speaker 1: into that in the interview, Schneider interview. So let's get
[0:45] Speaker 1: into that.
[0:46] Speaker 3: We are pleased to be welcomed by Deanna Schneider. First
[0:51] Speaker 3: of all, I think we got your name right.
[0:53] Speaker 2: That was right. All right.
[0:55] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[0:55] Speaker 3: See, current world number 16, career high number 11, an
[0:59] Speaker 3: absolute standout at the one and only North Carolina Wolfpack.
[1:03] Speaker 3: We're going to get into that. Not sure how you
[1:04] Speaker 3: ended up there. But welcome, Deanna, and thank you for
[1:07] Speaker 3: joining us.
[1:07] Speaker 2: Thank you. Thank you, guys, for having me. I'm very excited.
[1:10] Speaker 3: Let's not forget the 2026 French Open semifinalists. That was
[1:15] Speaker 3: probably a big one I missed in the notes.
[1:17] Speaker 1: Your name, Deanna.
[1:18] Speaker 4: Deanna.
[1:19] Speaker 1: A lot of people call you Diana because it's D-I-A-N-A.
[1:23] Speaker 1: Does that get annoying when you hear Diana Schneider? Do
[1:26] Speaker 1: you just say yes or do you correct them?
[1:28] Speaker 4: Honestly, when I was 12 and I was just starting
[1:32] Speaker 4: learning English, I was so annoyed.
[1:35] Speaker 2: It was incredible.
[1:36] Speaker 4: I remember I was reading a story in school about actually.
[1:41] Speaker 2: The Princess Diana.
[1:43] Speaker 4: And I was like, Princess Diana, and keep going with
[1:47] Speaker 4: the story. And then the teacher was like, no, it's
[1:51] Speaker 4: Princess Diana.
[1:52] Speaker 2: And I'm like, what do you mean? It's my name.
[1:55] Speaker 4: I know how I need to pronounce my name. So
[2:00] Speaker 4: after that, when I was starting traveling, everyone's like, yeah, Diana, Diana, Diana.
[2:06] Speaker 4: I was very, very upset with that, that people can't
[2:09] Speaker 4: pronounce my name like correctly. But now I honestly already
[2:13] Speaker 4: got used to that so much that even myself and
[2:16] Speaker 4: I go to, yeah.
[2:17] Speaker 2: So outside of like traveling, I just like, ah, hey, yeah,
[2:22] Speaker 2: I'm Diana.
[2:23] Speaker 4: Like I'm so used that I honestly already don't care.
[2:27] Speaker 2: I'm Diana, Diana. Everyone in the team called me D.
[2:30] Speaker 2: So yeah.
[2:32] Speaker 1: Lovely.
[2:33] Speaker 3: Yeah, so where is home for you, Diana? I mean,
[2:36] Speaker 3: where is home for you? Where are you now? What's
[2:38] Speaker 3: life been like for you the last few days since
[2:40] Speaker 3: an incredible French Open run?
[2:43] Speaker 4: So the next day after semifinals, I flew home to Moscow.
[2:48] Speaker 4: My family lives in Moscow. So if I have an opportunity,
[2:51] Speaker 4: I try to go there. Unfortunately, now it's super hard.
[2:56] Speaker 4: It's expensive. And also it takes a.
[2:58] Speaker 2: While to go there.
[3:01] Speaker 4: So it takes me like more than eight hours just
[3:04] Speaker 4: flying time to go like from Europe basically. Spend there
[3:11] Speaker 4: like four days just with family, you know, obviously was
[3:14] Speaker 4: doing fitness, but no tennis, just doing some activities with family,
[3:20] Speaker 4: obviously other stuff. But yeah, it was quick and short.
[3:25] Speaker 4: And now I'm in Berlin ready for the grass.
[3:29] Speaker 3: Yeah, that's, that's tennis in a nutshell. You have, you know,
[3:31] Speaker 3: an unbelievable week, you make the semis of a slam
[3:33] Speaker 3: and right back to work. The, uh, the circus continues.
[3:36] Speaker 3: It's another new week, but for you, like growing up,
[3:39] Speaker 3: was tennis always your biggest passion or was there other sports, um,
[3:43] Speaker 3: you know, that kind of caught your eye, but you
[3:46] Speaker 3: gravitated towards tennis more?
[3:47] Speaker 4: Um, well, my parents, uh, wanting me to do like
[3:51] Speaker 4: some activities when I was like young. Um, I started
[3:55] Speaker 4: tennis when I was like four. So super young, I
[3:58] Speaker 4: don't remember anything. But I was doing other than tennis,
[4:02] Speaker 4: I was doing like dancing. I was also playing piano
[4:07] Speaker 4: and playing chess. So I was doing a lot of stuff.
[4:09] Speaker 1: Can you still play piano like really well?
[4:14] Speaker 2: My mom can play.
[4:15] Speaker 4: So that's why I was like, she wanted me to play.
[4:19] Speaker 4: But then I dropped dances first because I wanted to
[4:23] Speaker 4: stay more on tennis courts with other kids to play.
[4:26] Speaker 4: I was like, I don't want to go to dance classes. Like,
[4:28] Speaker 4: I want to stay on court. So I dropped dances
[4:32] Speaker 4: and then I started playing tournaments and then I dropped piano.
[4:36] Speaker 4: I still can play chess, not as good as I
[4:40] Speaker 4: could because I was like.
[4:42] Speaker 2: taking classes. Now I don't, I just, I remember just
[4:45] Speaker 2: some basic.
[4:46] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[4:46] Speaker 3: And, and, you know, for you, you know, growing up,
[4:49] Speaker 3: I mean, were you, I mean, you were a very good,
[4:51] Speaker 3: you know, junior tennis player on the, on the ITF,
[4:53] Speaker 3: you know, ranked as high at top three, if I'm
[4:55] Speaker 3: not mistaken. So how does it generally, I feel like
[4:59] Speaker 3: on the female path, when you are that good in juniors,
[5:01] Speaker 3: you kind of jump right to the pro tour. How
[5:03] Speaker 3: does someone, you know, end up, you know, in the
[5:06] Speaker 3: U S college system and more importantly, how do they
[5:09] Speaker 3: end up at North Carolina state? Not, Not trying to
[5:12] Speaker 3: be mean here, but not a traditional tennis powerhouse in NCAA.
[5:18] Speaker 4: Well, honestly, even when I was like three in the
[5:22] Speaker 4: world in juniors, like I would never like really truly
[5:26] Speaker 4: believe that someday I'm like, you know, I'm going to
[5:27] Speaker 4: be like playing semis or French Open or like being
[5:30] Speaker 4: top 20 in the world. I feel like juniors was
[5:35] Speaker 4: just like another step. You know, you never know what
[5:37] Speaker 4: can happen like until you basically make it And I
[5:44] Speaker 4: feel like I was playing juniors, Roland Garros, and I
[5:52] Speaker 4: didn't have a coach, I didn't have a base where
[5:54] Speaker 4: to practice. So it was like just a tough situation overall.
[5:58] Speaker 4: And I was kind of afraid that we're all going
[6:01] Speaker 4: to be just like banned and I'm not going to
[6:03] Speaker 4: be able to play at all. So I was like,
[6:06] Speaker 4: me and my mom was just sitting, you know, and
[6:08] Speaker 4: I was like.
[6:08] Speaker 2: I need to have a plan B.
[6:09] Speaker 4: Like, you know, it was like worst case scenario, like
[6:13] Speaker 4: I need to have like somewhere like to practice, to
[6:17] Speaker 4: keep my level high. And actually the coaches from North
[6:24] Speaker 4: Carolina State, they never thought that I wanted to go
[6:26] Speaker 4: to college.
[6:27] Speaker 2: Yeah. So they didn't even ask me.
[6:30] Speaker 4: So just my mom had like some friends and they
[6:35] Speaker 4: had friends that reach out to the coaches there. So
[6:39] Speaker 4: just like some random connections worked. And we meet with
[6:42] Speaker 4: assistant coach at Paris. We just talked. I was like,
[6:47] Speaker 4: I want to go like professional, but you know, like
[6:49] Speaker 4: situation is hard. Like, I need to do a lot
[6:52] Speaker 4: by myself. You know, I need to, like, look for
[6:54] Speaker 4: the courts, for the coach. Like, moving around Moscow is
[6:58] Speaker 4: very hard with traffic and everything. It takes a lot
[7:00] Speaker 4: of time and effort. Like, visas and hotels. Like, I
[7:04] Speaker 4: need to do it myself. Like, it's just a lot
[7:06] Speaker 4: to handle. And they're like, yeah, we understand. Just, you know, like,
[7:11] Speaker 4: just think about it. Like, we can just, you know, say, like,
[7:15] Speaker 4: you stay for a year and then you just make
[7:17] Speaker 4: your mind, you know, if you want to just continue. Yeah.
[7:20] Speaker 4: Or if you're doing great, we're just going to just
[7:22] Speaker 4: let you go. And you just go on tour. Obviously,
[7:25] Speaker 4: it was a very hard decision because my dad was
[7:28] Speaker 4: against it.
[7:29] Speaker 2: Like, he didn't want me to go to college at all.
[7:33] Speaker 4: My mom wanted me to go. So I was just
[7:35] Speaker 4: like in the bridge setting. I was like, okay, where
[7:38] Speaker 4: do I go? And I remember like talking to my
[7:42] Speaker 4: dad and he's like, So you're 18, so you're already
[7:45] Speaker 4: like a mature grown person. So you're going to take
[7:48] Speaker 4: your first responsible decision.
[7:50] Speaker 2: And you're just going to make it your own. I
[7:52] Speaker 2: was like, Oh my God.
[7:55] Speaker 4: And now honestly, I was keep losing in like playing
[7:58] Speaker 4: like 25K and 60Ks. So I'm making qualities, you know,
[8:02] Speaker 4: losing in the first round, second round. I was like, that's,
[8:05] Speaker 4: that's not what I want. Like even I was like 300,
[8:07] Speaker 4: but I was like, no, I like, I want to
[8:10] Speaker 4: do better. And, um, I remember, like, I just wrote
[8:16] Speaker 4: a message. I was like, hey, like, I'm coming. And
[8:18] Speaker 4: I was like, it was so late. We were just
[8:20] Speaker 4: like rushing with all of the documents, like visa and everything.
[8:24] Speaker 4: It was so rushed, like last moment. But it turned
[8:27] Speaker 4: out a very important and right decision.
[8:32] Speaker 1: Did you look at any other schools? Because no offense
[8:34] Speaker 1: to NC State, because if I'm the assistant coach and
[8:38] Speaker 1: the number three junior in the world is looking at
[8:40] Speaker 1: my program and then she's like, we're coming here. I'm
[8:42] Speaker 1: going back to my AD and be like, you guys
[8:43] Speaker 1: aren't going to believe this. For some reason, the number
[8:45] Speaker 1: three player in the world is looking at NC State
[8:48] Speaker 1: and not Georgia, UCLA, Alabama. I feel almost like you
[8:53] Speaker 1: got bamboozled in going to NC State, but ultimately it
[8:56] Speaker 1: sounds like you did love it.
[8:57] Speaker 4: No, it was great. Honestly, I didn't know much about
[9:02] Speaker 4: college tennis. I knew, but I feel like there's a
[9:07] Speaker 4: huge stereotype around Europe that if you go to college,
[9:11] Speaker 4: your pro career is over. And you're not going to
[9:14] Speaker 4: be able to continue like at all. That level is
[9:17] Speaker 4: like low or whatever. And I believe in that stereotype
[9:22] Speaker 4: too until I went there and I saw like how
[9:24] Speaker 4: people are working there and like how level is so
[9:28] Speaker 4: high there. I mean, for sure, other colleges was writing me.
[9:33] Speaker 4: I feel like Baylor and like Texas A & M
[9:35] Speaker 4: was writing too. But I honestly had no idea like
[9:39] Speaker 4: about rankings or whatever. I just feel like I really
[9:42] Speaker 4: trusted like the person, like the assistant coach who I met.
[9:46] Speaker 4: We talked and I feel like it was just like
[9:48] Speaker 4: an honest conversation. And I feel like for me, it
[9:51] Speaker 4: was more important about like the team and the coaches,
[9:53] Speaker 4: like the structure overall and that they.
[9:55] Speaker 2: Understand what I want. And I didn't even care like
[9:59] Speaker 2: the jokes.
[10:00] Speaker 4: Or whatever, like how the dorms look like, because I
[10:03] Speaker 4: remember like seeing like other people coming to see the courts,
[10:07] Speaker 4: the gym, like, you know, that like the visit.
[10:10] Speaker 2: They have it. I was like, we're doing that.
[10:13] Speaker 4: I just came literally a week before juniors, you saw
[10:16] Speaker 4: us and then I went to play and that's all.
[10:18] Speaker 2: Like I didn't care about anything.
[10:21] Speaker 4: Like for me, the most important was like the coaches, uh,
[10:24] Speaker 4: that they understand and that we, and that they can
[10:27] Speaker 4: help me.
[10:27] Speaker 2: That's all.
[10:28] Speaker 1: Amazing.
[10:28] Speaker 3: Seems like a pretty like mature decision to make as
[10:30] Speaker 3: an 18 year old to like pick a school based
[10:33] Speaker 3: on like what you thought was going to be like
[10:35] Speaker 3: the best path for you as a professional. So not
[10:37] Speaker 3: everybody makes that choice. Um, But what I find super
[10:41] Speaker 3: fun and interesting, for you obviously coming over, what was
[10:44] Speaker 3: the culture shock like? Coming to North Carolina State, being
[10:48] Speaker 3: there in the fall, having football games and seeing all
[10:51] Speaker 3: the craziness of just college life. You can see it
[10:56] Speaker 3: kind of portrayed in movies, which most of the time
[10:58] Speaker 3: is not quite realistic. But how was that transition as
[11:01] Speaker 3: an 18-year-old coming over?
[11:02] Speaker 2: Honestly, it was... I did so much, to be honest,
[11:07] Speaker 2: like I haven't went on.
[11:09] Speaker 4: Any football game or other sports. I just went there,
[11:14] Speaker 4: you know, for myself, you know, to practice, to play tournaments,
[11:18] Speaker 4: obviously to play college matches. Just to keep up, like,
[11:22] Speaker 4: obviously with school and everything, it was very hard, you know.
[11:25] Speaker 4: But it was a great time, you know. I feel
[11:27] Speaker 4: like everyone at school was super nice. Like, it was,
[11:32] Speaker 4: I mean, obviously it wasn't easy. Just like combining college
[11:35] Speaker 4: matches and I was playing my tournaments at the same time.
[11:39] Speaker 4: And then I need to keep up with school.
[11:42] Speaker 2: It was a joke.
[11:43] Speaker 4: I feel second semester when we were playing already college matches.
[11:48] Speaker 2: I was crying so much. I was crying to coaches.
[11:51] Speaker 4: I was crying to academic advisor because I guess just
[11:54] Speaker 4: some ridiculous tough classes.
[11:57] Speaker 2: I was like, this is a joke.
[11:57] Speaker 4: I was like, like, why you gave me like I
[12:00] Speaker 4: had early American history. I was like, I don't understand
[12:05] Speaker 4: what you're talking about.
[12:06] Speaker 2: Like, I have a decent English, but like, I don't
[12:09] Speaker 2: understand what it is about. Like, guys, like, and we
[12:11] Speaker 2: wouldn't need to write an essay like every week. I
[12:14] Speaker 2: was like, no, I can't.
[12:17] Speaker 3: We had a few guys back on our team that
[12:19] Speaker 3: obviously came from South America or Europe. That was always
[12:24] Speaker 3: a trouble spot for them because they just didn't quite
[12:27] Speaker 3: grasp it. But on the tennis sides of things, you
[12:30] Speaker 3: get there in the fall of 2022. You play for
[12:35] Speaker 3: a couple months. You go down to Australia. You make
[12:38] Speaker 3: second round. And you come back for the spring season.
[12:40] Speaker 3: You come back for NCAAs the whole season. Like, that's
[12:43] Speaker 3: got to be a crazy kind of transition because you
[12:46] Speaker 3: were the first woman player inside the top 100 since,
[12:50] Speaker 3: I believe, 1993 to play college tennis, like currently, while
[12:53] Speaker 3: being ranked inside the top 100, which is not an
[12:55] Speaker 3: easy feat.
[12:56] Speaker 4: Yeah, I feel like everyone was super shocked after Australia
[13:00] Speaker 4: that I went and I started playing matches. But I
[13:04] Speaker 4: told coaches, like, that.
[13:06] Speaker 2: 100%, like, I'm staying for the season. And usually I.
[13:10] Speaker 4: Try to keep my word, as I say. So for me,
[13:13] Speaker 4: like it was a big, like big deal that like
[13:17] Speaker 4: I'm not going to let these people down, you know,
[13:19] Speaker 4: like after that they helped me to have a success
[13:22] Speaker 4: that I'm just going to, hey, you know, guys, I'm sorry.
[13:24] Speaker 4: I'm just going to go and play my pro tournament.
[13:28] Speaker 4: I know that I told you that I'm going to
[13:30] Speaker 4: stay for a year, but you know.
[13:33] Speaker 2: I want to go. No, that's not about me.
[13:35] Speaker 4: So yeah, I definitely wanted to stay and I wanted
[13:38] Speaker 4: to do my best for the team to help them
[13:41] Speaker 4: to achieve some great results too.
[13:43] Speaker 1: Yeah, it's amazing. When you first came to North Carolina,
[13:45] Speaker 1: like we do a segment, European pet peeves, and we
[13:48] Speaker 1: complain about the runny eggs and the beds and the
[13:50] Speaker 1: lack of air conditioning and things like that. Are there
[13:53] Speaker 1: things in America that bothered you? Like when you came over,
[13:55] Speaker 1: you're like, why are we doing this? Like what, this is,
[13:58] Speaker 1: doesn't make sense.
[13:58] Speaker 2: Yeah. Oh, my dorm was super cold.
[14:02] Speaker 1: Yeah, but that's nice though, right?
[14:05] Speaker 2: It was too cold. For me, it was extremely like,
[14:09] Speaker 2: they were like, oh my God, you Russian. Like, what
[14:11] Speaker 2: do you mean it's cold? I'm like, guys, like, it's cold.
[14:15] Speaker 4: Like, I like to, you know, just like sleep in
[14:17] Speaker 4: a t-shirt. Like, I don't like to sleep in a
[14:19] Speaker 4: sweatshirt or like in pants. No, I would always go
[14:23] Speaker 4: to AC and put it. It was always on 68.
[14:25] Speaker 4: I was like, this is too cold.
[14:27] Speaker 1: Was your roommate another girl on the team, or was
[14:30] Speaker 1: it a random student?
[14:33] Speaker 2: A non-athlete.
[14:34] Speaker 1: Wow. Do you keep in touch with that person? Because
[14:36] Speaker 1: now all of a sudden, there's some random college girl
[14:39] Speaker 1: who's like, oh, you're not going to believe this. My
[14:40] Speaker 1: old college roommate just semifinal Roland Garros.
[14:44] Speaker 4: No, usually, I mean, I would leave my dorm at
[14:47] Speaker 4: 8 a.m., and then I came back at 8 p.m.,
[14:49] Speaker 4: and I would just shut my door, and I don't
[14:51] Speaker 4: want to see anyone.
[14:53] Speaker 2: I just do like some homework and I go to sleep.
[14:56] Speaker 2: That's all.
[14:56] Speaker 4: And sometimes like my roommate would be like loud and
[15:00] Speaker 4: I would.
[15:01] Speaker 2: Be so pissed. I was like, I gotta practice tomorrow.
[15:07] Speaker 2: I need to sleep.
[15:07] Speaker 4: Like I would, half of the year I would sleep
[15:10] Speaker 4: in airports just because like the walls are so thin
[15:14] Speaker 4: that I could hear everything. And sometimes there weren't nice
[15:17] Speaker 4: things to hear.
[15:19] Speaker 1: Would you embrace yourself in, like, the college and American culture?
[15:23] Speaker 1: Would you go to any basketball games or, like, college
[15:25] Speaker 1: parties or anything like that?
[15:27] Speaker 4: I mean, obviously, I would need to be in the
[15:28] Speaker 4: mood to go because sometimes I would be just so tired.
[15:32] Speaker 4: And I was like, guys, you know, even if you're going, because, like,
[15:35] Speaker 4: my teammates would go, like, to hockey game or to
[15:39] Speaker 4: football game.
[15:39] Speaker 2: And I was like, I'm not going. I'm not a
[15:42] Speaker 2: fan of just, like, big crowds. I was like, mm-mm.
[15:46] Speaker 2: It's not today.
[15:47] Speaker 4: I'm like, I just want to be by myself watching
[15:49] Speaker 4: a TV show.
[15:50] Speaker 2: Laying in my bed.
[15:51] Speaker 1: Speaking of TV shows, can you give us like one
[15:53] Speaker 1: or two like favorite TV shows that you've watched over
[15:57] Speaker 1: the years?
[15:57] Speaker 4: Well, the first thing that each of my teammates ask me.
[16:02] Speaker 4: if I watch Stranger Things. And then I said no,
[16:05] Speaker 4: they started screaming at me and making me watch it.
[16:09] Speaker 2: So, well, Stranger Things was nice. I feel like this
[16:14] Speaker 2: was one of the best. Last year, I watched Netflix.
[16:20] Speaker 4: Department Q, like a detective TV show. It was very nice,
[16:25] Speaker 4: like I suggest. Like I love detective TV shows. Um,
[16:29] Speaker 4: and then this year I watched, uh, a hunting party
[16:34] Speaker 4: was also very nice. Like FBI agent, like this type
[16:37] Speaker 4: of things.
[16:38] Speaker 2: I like it.
[16:38] Speaker 1: Yeah. I like those shows too. Is, was there a
[16:41] Speaker 1: moment like when you were in college that you remember
[16:43] Speaker 1: you had a big result on the pros and you're like, okay,
[16:46] Speaker 1: you know what? I'm not going to go back to school.
[16:48] Speaker 1: Was it one single moment or is it just like
[16:50] Speaker 1: kind of an obvious decision over the course of a
[16:52] Speaker 1: few months?
[16:53] Speaker 2: Yeah, obvious. There was not even a thought, never.
[16:57] Speaker 4: Even after Australia, now I was like, I'm going back,
[17:00] Speaker 4: I'm going to practice, I have my matches there, my
[17:03] Speaker 4: teammates are there.
[17:05] Speaker 1: That's nice. So at Roland Garros, I love asking this question,
[17:09] Speaker 1: you made like $ 850, 000 US dollars. Are you going to
[17:14] Speaker 1: check the bank account? Because it probably hasn't hit yet, right?
[17:17] Speaker 1: It's only been over four days.
[17:19] Speaker 2: It did hit, yes.
[17:20] Speaker 1: I knew you checked, though. Of course you checked, right?
[17:22] Speaker 1: You check every day?
[17:24] Speaker 2: I receive an email, though.
[17:26] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah. You pump. So you're someone, if you have
[17:30] Speaker 1: a big result like this, you'll check the account every
[17:32] Speaker 1: few days to see if it hits?
[17:34] Speaker 2: Yes. Um, no, I'm not shaking. I mean, I just
[17:38] Speaker 2: like to check that all good.
[17:39] Speaker 4: You know, that like, I don't have any issues with
[17:42] Speaker 4: my banking or whatever. That's, uh, nothing is wrong just
[17:46] Speaker 4: to keep it like clear. Uh, but not just like
[17:48] Speaker 4: to check it like, Oh my God, I'm rich.
[17:51] Speaker 2: Like not, not for stuff like that. No, just like
[17:53] Speaker 2: for safety reasons.
[17:55] Speaker 4: All right.
[17:56] Speaker 1: That's fair. I wouldn't check. I would've been like, yeah,
[17:57] Speaker 1: I'm rich. I just got 150 grand or 850,000 in
[17:58] Speaker 1: the account. 800, 800, not one 50. Um, that's amazing.
[18:05] Speaker 1: When you left college, who was your initial, like, you know,
[18:08] Speaker 1: you didn't have your college coach on the pro tour.
[18:10] Speaker 1: What was like, how did you find your first like
[18:12] Speaker 1: coach right when you left NC State?
[18:14] Speaker 4: It was kind of hard to be honest, like after
[18:17] Speaker 4: spending so much time with team, like to be honest,
[18:20] Speaker 4: for a few like tournaments, I felt like super lonely.
[18:23] Speaker 4: Like it felt very weird to travel by yourself without coach,
[18:27] Speaker 4: without team. It's like nine people around you, you know,
[18:31] Speaker 4: like always having fun, like, the trips and everything, like
[18:34] Speaker 4: so much memories. So yeah, it was a little bit
[18:38] Speaker 4: odd to start traveling by yourself.
[18:43] Speaker 2: But first coach was just random.
[18:45] Speaker 4: I knew the guy from juniors before and then we
[18:49] Speaker 4: tried and then obviously it didn't last long, but yeah.
[18:54] Speaker 3: It's a trial and error process, but you know, we,
[18:57] Speaker 3: I mean, everybody who knows you knows you've got a
[19:00] Speaker 3: unique look, right? The bandana gets talked about a lot.
[19:03] Speaker 3: My questions about the bandana is, who do you think
[19:07] Speaker 3: would pull it off best, male or female, outside of you?
[19:10] Speaker 3: And who has the best style outside of you on
[19:14] Speaker 3: the court? Or most unique? Because we saw Francis wear it.
[19:17] Speaker 3: I forget where it was last summer. Was that Cincinnati?
[19:20] Speaker 2: It was in Cincinnati, yeah.
[19:21] Speaker 1: During a match, Francis Tiafua wore it?
[19:23] Speaker 2: No, he told me he will. But he's a liar. Okay.
[19:28] Speaker 4: We need to make him wear it because he was like,
[19:32] Speaker 4: oh my God, outside, it's too hot.
[19:34] Speaker 2: I can't wear it outside.
[19:35] Speaker 4: And then he's like, I promise I'm going to wear
[19:37] Speaker 4: it indoors. But then I feel like he didn't play
[19:39] Speaker 4: much indoors last year, so he didn't wear it.
[19:42] Speaker 1: I got one real quick. If another player, like female player,
[19:45] Speaker 1: wore the bandana, let's say in Cincinnati, would you be like, whoa,
[19:49] Speaker 1: that's mine? look like what are you doing.
[19:51] Speaker 2: Right now i mean no i wouldn't be like.
[19:55] Speaker 1: Come on you'd be i would i would be like
[19:56] Speaker 1: no no that's i trademarked that.
[19:58] Speaker 4: You can't wear that yeah i don't know i feel
[20:00] Speaker 4: like i would be more like uh actually you know
[20:03] Speaker 4: like proud like in some certain way that someone like
[20:06] Speaker 4: also wants to like try it and um to see
[20:10] Speaker 4: if it is their style.
[20:11] Speaker 2: I don't know.
[20:13] Speaker 3: Yeah, no, imitation is a highest form of flattery. There's
[20:18] Speaker 3: some saying in there.
[20:18] Speaker 1: Imitation is the highest form of flattery. The highest form
[20:20] Speaker 1: of flattery.
[20:21] Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right. But a little bit more about like
[20:24] Speaker 3: your on-court identity, you know, you being a lefty, using
[20:27] Speaker 3: that kind of like heavy forehand, using the leftiness. Do
[20:30] Speaker 3: you like deliberately kind of play to be a lefty
[20:34] Speaker 3: or has your game always been this way?
[20:36] Speaker 4: Well, honestly, I feel like I need to do much
[20:38] Speaker 4: more to be more like a left-handed player. I feel
[20:42] Speaker 4: like I'm kind of lacking it.
[20:45] Speaker 3: We'll have to talk to your coach about that. We'll
[20:46] Speaker 3: get to him in a minute.
[20:48] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[20:48] Speaker 4: For sure, we definitely need to do a lot of
[20:51] Speaker 4: more work. But I feel like, honestly, I always play, like,
[20:56] Speaker 4: aggressive style. So I feel like from the childhood, like,
[21:00] Speaker 4: the first coach taught me, like, to go for my shots.
[21:04] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[21:06] Speaker 4: So it's more natural for me, but I definitely can,
[21:10] Speaker 4: can and need to use more like of my lefty
[21:13] Speaker 4: spin and like slices and all of this.
[21:16] Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I mean, absolutely. And, you know, kind of
[21:18] Speaker 3: using that leftiness, obviously the last, you know, at Roland Garros,
[21:23] Speaker 3: it was an incredible run to the semis. You know, you,
[21:26] Speaker 3: you're a seated player, you're expected to do, you know,
[21:28] Speaker 3: well in these events, right? Like you're one of the
[21:30] Speaker 3: best players in the world. at what point did it
[21:33] Speaker 3: start to feel different? You know, cause you know, for me,
[21:37] Speaker 3: obviously I was watching from home. Sam was covering it from,
[21:39] Speaker 3: from Paris. You know, I feel like that match against
[21:41] Speaker 3: Maddie keys was like kind of a big turning point,
[21:44] Speaker 3: you know, in just in the event with the way
[21:46] Speaker 3: you kind of responded after that second set loss, like
[21:49] Speaker 3: coming out, you played an unreal third set six. So
[21:53] Speaker 3: it just feel like the confidence like built from there.
[21:55] Speaker 3: Like that's for me, from my perspective, from the couch,
[21:58] Speaker 3: you know, what did it feel like to you during
[21:59] Speaker 3: those two weeks?
[22:00] Speaker 4: Well, honestly, I was already super happy passing the second
[22:04] Speaker 4: round because I never did it before.
[22:06] Speaker 2: So already beating.
[22:08] Speaker 4: McCartney, I was like, yes, I was already super, super pumped.
[22:13] Speaker 4: For sure, I wanted to go to the second week.
[22:15] Speaker 4: That was like the goal. Obviously, the third round was tough.
[22:22] Speaker 4: uberly tough just like from both physically and mentally um
[22:27] Speaker 4: and i feel like after that i was just me
[22:30] Speaker 4: me both and like sasha and me we were like
[22:33] Speaker 4: so excited to be in the second week you know
[22:35] Speaker 4: like uh beating uh the girl in the third round
[22:39] Speaker 4: it was such a tough match like with a lot
[22:42] Speaker 4: of being on the table I was like, oh my God,
[22:45] Speaker 4: like I had this ice cream, well-deserved ice cream after
[22:49] Speaker 4: that match. So I feel like already playing Natty, I
[22:56] Speaker 4: was already happy with overall performance. For sure, we wanted
[22:59] Speaker 4: to go for more, but definitely it was kind of
[23:03] Speaker 4: a little bit more free.
[23:05] Speaker 2: And I feel like it's always less nerves.
[23:08] Speaker 4: Playing someone who's like high ranked and already achieved so much,
[23:12] Speaker 4: you know, being a Grand Slam champion. Definitely a little
[23:15] Speaker 4: bit easier than you play someone who's like low ranked.
[23:19] Speaker 4: Less expectations, obviously. And I mean, I already lost three times,
[23:24] Speaker 4: maybe before. So I kind of knew what to expect
[23:30] Speaker 4: from her, like her game style and everything. I know
[23:33] Speaker 4: already her pretty well. But it was a great match.
[23:38] Speaker 4: I feel like I was just very focused. There was
[23:42] Speaker 4: like no negative emotions at all. Even after second set,
[23:48] Speaker 4: that great hold in.
[23:50] Speaker 2: The first game, I feel like it was massive.
[23:53] Speaker 4: I remember I was watching highlights after my.
[23:56] Speaker 2: Match and I was like, oh my God, I went
[23:58] Speaker 2: to Wally. Oh my God, what am I doing? It
[24:02] Speaker 2: was like 15-40, I went to the net. I was like... Wow.
[24:06] Speaker 2: I was typing such, I was like, that was brave.
[24:10] Speaker 2: I was like, I don't remember that. I don't remember
[24:13] Speaker 2: doing that.
[24:15] Speaker 3: When you're so locked in, you just remember the good stuff.
[24:17] Speaker 2: Yes, yes. It was a great match.
[24:19] Speaker 4: I feel like I was just going after that first
[24:22] Speaker 4: hold in the first set. I feel like I was
[24:24] Speaker 4: just like, okay, I hold my surf.
[24:27] Speaker 2: This is like what I need to do. Like, she's
[24:29] Speaker 2: a big server, so it's okay. I just need to
[24:32] Speaker 2: hold my surf. That's it.
[24:33] Speaker 4: Hold my surf and wait for opportunities to break her surf.
[24:36] Speaker 4: And obviously I just had that opportunity in the second game.
[24:39] Speaker 1: When you played, I don't have in front of me,
[24:41] Speaker 1: you played Sabalenka in the quarterfinals, right? When you take
[24:44] Speaker 1: the court, when you're going into that match, do you
[24:46] Speaker 1: actually believe that you can win before the match starts
[24:49] Speaker 1: or do you gain belief as the match is going on?
[24:52] Speaker 4: I definitely was not believing that I can beat her
[24:55] Speaker 4: before the match.
[24:56] Speaker 1: That's how I used to feel too.
[24:59] Speaker 2: There was no such a feeling for me.
[25:01] Speaker 4: And honestly, even like, I mean, I was losing like
[25:05] Speaker 4: 4-1 and 5-3.
[25:06] Speaker 2: Yeah. It was very tough conditions. We were winning and everything.
[25:11] Speaker 4: I feel like in the first set, I was very
[25:13] Speaker 4: annoyed with just the situation overall because I was warming
[25:17] Speaker 4: up with a closed roof. we were actually supposed to
[25:20] Speaker 4: share it with Arina and then I didn't see her
[25:23] Speaker 4: and I was like, what is happening? And then like,
[25:26] Speaker 4: when we were finishing the warmup, they just started opening
[25:29] Speaker 4: the roof and I was like, okay, now I see
[25:32] Speaker 4: what's happening. She was warming up outside and I had
[25:35] Speaker 4: no clue that, that they're going to open the roof. Um,
[25:40] Speaker 4: but then I feel like I had also like a
[25:42] Speaker 4: lot of opportunities in the first set, um, to keep
[25:46] Speaker 4: it up with her and, uh, that I didn't use
[25:50] Speaker 4: or use it in the wrong way. So in the
[25:55] Speaker 4: second set, I don't know, something just like snapped at
[25:59] Speaker 4: 5-3 that I was like, it's already kind of over,
[26:04] Speaker 4: you know, at some point.
[26:05] Speaker 2: I was like, I mean, she's a world number one.
[26:07] Speaker 4: Like I, there's nothing to be ashamed of, like to lose, like,
[26:11] Speaker 4: you know? And I was like, I mean, I'm playing
[26:15] Speaker 4: against the wind. She's hitting hard. I'm like three meters
[26:18] Speaker 4: behind the baseline. And I'm trying, you know, to kind
[26:21] Speaker 4: of play same game style as I played Maddie, like
[26:23] Speaker 4: with higher balls, like trying to change the pace, like
[26:27] Speaker 4: make a little more of like variations, but it didn't work.
[26:30] Speaker 4: I was like, it's not working like today with this wind, like.
[26:34] Speaker 2: I just got to hit the ball.
[26:35] Speaker 4: Like I got to hit it so she can hit
[26:38] Speaker 4: it at me like harder. It's like she can push
[26:41] Speaker 4: me even more. So I just started like hitting more freely,
[26:45] Speaker 4: just going for my shots, being more aggressive. I guess
[26:50] Speaker 4: she wasn't ready that I will be still like trying
[26:53] Speaker 4: to find something different, like trying to find a different solution.
[26:56] Speaker 4: And then like mistakes from her side started creeping in.
[27:01] Speaker 2: I saw a moment, I kind of like, I was like, oh.
[27:04] Speaker 4: I'm getting closer and closer. And then like winning second set,
[27:08] Speaker 4: I was like, she haven't lost a set here. Like,
[27:11] Speaker 4: let's go. It was like my proud moment. I was like,
[27:13] Speaker 4: I won a set against world number one.
[27:15] Speaker 2: No one did it in this tournament.
[27:18] Speaker 4: I'm taking this, I'm taking this as a win. And
[27:22] Speaker 4: I feel like in the third set, I already had
[27:24] Speaker 4: that feeling what I have to do.
[27:27] Speaker 2: Kind of beat her after the second set so like.
[27:29] Speaker 4: I just gotta keep going like same like i need
[27:32] Speaker 4: to be focused like on my surf and hold my
[27:35] Speaker 4: surf and then just being like very aggressive but like
[27:39] Speaker 4: very disciplined going for an easier shot and then again
[27:42] Speaker 4: seek for the opportunity to break a surf and wait
[27:45] Speaker 4: for this moment where like she will try to go
[27:47] Speaker 4: for more it's.
[27:48] Speaker 3: Amazing match yeah i mean you talk about i mean
[27:51] Speaker 3: you know not to talk about the next match a
[27:53] Speaker 3: little bit, but how different is the feeling, you know,
[27:56] Speaker 3: going against Savalenka where you have no expectation to then
[28:00] Speaker 3: in the semis playing, you know, a qualifier. And now
[28:03] Speaker 3: you are, you know, the favorite, which doesn't happen too often.
[28:06] Speaker 3: I feel like in a sport, like in tennis, where
[28:09] Speaker 3: you get that different of a feeling. So, you know,
[28:12] Speaker 3: was the preparation any different? How did you feel kind
[28:14] Speaker 3: of going out to that semifinal match?
[28:16] Speaker 4: Yeah, honestly, uh, Even when we played Sabalenka after that
[28:21] Speaker 4: crazy Janik-Sinner match, losing from 5-1, when I was losing
[28:26] Speaker 4: five laps, I was like, it's not over.
[28:28] Speaker 2: Like, it's not over. Even at the pre-match point, I
[28:31] Speaker 2: was like, it's not over.
[28:33] Speaker 4: Like, nope. And I feel like after I already won,
[28:36] Speaker 4: obviously you're so happy.
[28:42] Speaker 2: I feel like... you don't believe it.
[28:45] Speaker 4: Like, I didn't believe it that I did it, you know,
[28:47] Speaker 4: that I'm in the semis, beating Arena. And for sure,
[28:53] Speaker 4: that I need to play next day kind of, I
[28:56] Speaker 4: feel like, was a little bit... That's right. different, because
[29:01] Speaker 4: I had a tough match against Medi, where I need
[29:04] Speaker 4: to run a lot. Then I get that physical match
[29:07] Speaker 4: against Arena, where I was also running for quite a
[29:11] Speaker 4: few balls just to make that extra for her. So
[29:16] Speaker 4: I feel like physically I was already kind of getting tired.
[29:21] Speaker 4: And obviously mentally that I didn't have that just day
[29:25] Speaker 4: off where I can just kind of recharge and just
[29:28] Speaker 4: like to think about what I have to do for
[29:30] Speaker 4: the next match. Because usually I would just go on
[29:33] Speaker 4: practice score. We would like have a practice. We would
[29:35] Speaker 4: get ready for the specific opener, like what we have
[29:39] Speaker 4: to do. like talk through the tactics. And then we
[29:44] Speaker 4: didn't have that extra day. It was like, everything was
[29:47] Speaker 4: kind of rushed. It's like, We're like, okay, we're finished.
[29:51] Speaker 4: And then you have this idea that you need to
[29:52] Speaker 4: get ready for tomorrow.
[29:54] Speaker 2: You need to take care of your body. You need
[29:55] Speaker 2: to take a cool.
[29:56] Speaker 4: Down and anathesio and an ice bath. And then you
[29:59] Speaker 4: eat and then you have press. And then you just
[30:02] Speaker 4: from one thing to another thing and then you need
[30:04] Speaker 4: to call your family.
[30:06] Speaker 2: Everyone is super happy.
[30:07] Speaker 4: Your phone is just keep buzzing and buzzing.
[30:10] Speaker 2: And then all of a sudden it's 9 p.m. and
[30:14] Speaker 2: you're playing tomorrow. You're like, what?
[30:20] Speaker 4: And then you have someone who obviously came from Qualys
[30:24] Speaker 4: for show more expectations. But I feel like for me,
[30:28] Speaker 4: it wasn't more about expectation. It was just Like, completely
[30:32] Speaker 4: different game style compared to Arena. Like, a very big
[30:36] Speaker 4: switch from, like, a high pace and, like, to a
[30:39] Speaker 4: lot of variations to high balls and then, like, a
[30:42] Speaker 4: lot of slices and drop shots.
[30:45] Speaker 2: Obviously, her being a lefty. So, definitely a big switch.
[30:52] Speaker 4: And I feel like that match was so physically intense
[30:56] Speaker 4: that Like after first set, I was already like, I
[30:59] Speaker 4: was done. Like after that, like hour 20. I can't
[31:04] Speaker 4: do this for another set. Like my legs were so sore.
[31:07] Speaker 4: Like my back was getting sore. I was like, I
[31:09] Speaker 4: got to take a medical term because I just, I
[31:11] Speaker 4: can't turn my body and like, I can't run.
[31:14] Speaker 2: Like I can't breathe anymore.
[31:17] Speaker 4: And then it was a closed roof, it was raining,
[31:20] Speaker 4: so the balls got all wet and puffy. It was
[31:23] Speaker 4: kind of helping her game style more than mine.
[31:26] Speaker 2: I couldn't really finish the ball being aggressive.
[31:29] Speaker 4: So it was a lot of long rallies, a lot
[31:32] Speaker 4: of running back and forward.
[31:35] Speaker 2: But she did play great.
[31:38] Speaker 4: Very smart tennis for the clay courts. But I knew
[31:42] Speaker 4: her actually from 2022. I knew that's going to be
[31:46] Speaker 4: a tough match, but she played great. And then I
[31:51] Speaker 4: finished the match. I mean, obviously I cried because I
[31:54] Speaker 4: was upset. I missed the opportunity to be in the final.
[31:58] Speaker 4: But overall, like after match, we talked with Sasha. I
[32:01] Speaker 4: was like, I have like no doubts. Like I have,
[32:03] Speaker 4: I left it all out there. I tried different things. Yeah.
[32:08] Speaker 2: It didn't work. She played great. I played good.
[32:11] Speaker 4: I mean, there was like a couple crazy rallies with
[32:14] Speaker 4: long match.
[32:15] Speaker 2: It was entertaining match.
[32:16] Speaker 4: So I was just, you know, proud that I showed
[32:19] Speaker 4: some good tennis and that's it.
[32:20] Speaker 1: Yeah. That's a good, that's a good mindset. Hopefully you'll
[32:23] Speaker 1: have another chance to make a final. Before we, we
[32:27] Speaker 1: got a little more. Now that you've made a semi
[32:29] Speaker 1: and you are also top 20 in the world, you're
[32:33] Speaker 1: recording this from Berlin. Are you asking for like a
[32:35] Speaker 1: suite now at tournaments? Or he's like still standard worm.
[32:40] Speaker 2: Of course, yeah, no, standard worm.
[32:41] Speaker 1: Standard worm, right? You asked for the sweet.
[32:43] Speaker 4: Well, I have some things that I kindly ask. I
[32:48] Speaker 4: like to keep my room very quiet, further from people,
[32:51] Speaker 4: further from the elevators. I have my quiet corner. I'm like, please,
[32:56] Speaker 4: just like last room, like last room.
[32:58] Speaker 2: I'm happy to walk, but please, I need to have
[33:01] Speaker 2: a quiet space.
[33:03] Speaker 1: Okay, that's an easy ask.
[33:04] Speaker 3: You're much different than Sam. When he made the semis,
[33:07] Speaker 3: he was insufferable with all his requests.
[33:09] Speaker 1: No, I wasn't.
[33:09] Speaker 3: It was too much.
[33:11] Speaker 1: I'm the most simple person in the world. I want
[33:13] Speaker 1: to talk about big Sasha, your coach, Sasha Bajin, real quick.
[33:18] Speaker 1: You guys seem like you have an unbelievable relationship. After
[33:21] Speaker 1: each match at Roland Garros that you'd win, we'd have
[33:23] Speaker 1: the cameras. You guys would go in the locker room.
[33:24] Speaker 1: You'd have this cool embrace, handshake thing. How important has
[33:29] Speaker 1: he been since he's joined you as your coach?
[33:32] Speaker 2: For sure, very important.
[33:33] Speaker 4: I feel like, obviously, there was a lot of expectations
[33:37] Speaker 4: from both of us, from him as a coach, from
[33:40] Speaker 4: me as a player, like, working together. I feel like
[33:44] Speaker 4: everyone was, like, thinking that's going to be, like, immediate success, like, straightforward.
[33:52] Speaker 2: I feel like we had.
[33:53] Speaker 4: couple of tough losses this year, which was like very tough.
[33:57] Speaker 2: Like even like many keys in Brisbane, like the.
[33:59] Speaker 4: Seven, six, six, seven, seven, six, where you, you're being
[34:03] Speaker 4: so close, but then you kind of wasn't and you
[34:07] Speaker 4: didn't get to win and it's tough.
[34:10] Speaker 2: Um, But I feel like the relationship.
[34:14] Speaker 4: Was from the beginning, super just natural and chilly, you know,
[34:20] Speaker 4: it was easy on the court, off the court.
[34:23] Speaker 2: I feel like for me, the most important that that was.
[34:26] Speaker 4: Enjoying coming on the practice, you know, um, doing the
[34:30] Speaker 4: hard work like together. Um, I feel like I understand
[34:35] Speaker 4: that we had like kind of same mindset, like same
[34:38] Speaker 4: vision of the game of what we need to do better, um,
[34:42] Speaker 4: what I can improve. Um, and, um, I feel like
[34:46] Speaker 4: that was one of the most important things that we
[34:49] Speaker 4: have the same vision. Um, And obviously he believes in
[34:53] Speaker 4: me so much. And I understand what are we working
[34:56] Speaker 4: on the court. That's not like they just go and
[34:59] Speaker 4: hit and whatever. No, we know what we're doing. We
[35:03] Speaker 4: know why are we doing. So it was just a
[35:07] Speaker 4: little hard that I know, I knew how much like
[35:10] Speaker 4: hard work we were putting into like the practices, into
[35:13] Speaker 4: the diet, into everything.
[35:16] Speaker 2: And like the.
[35:18] Speaker 4: like on tournaments, it wouldn't.
[35:20] Speaker 2: Like pay off.
[35:20] Speaker 4: Like, like it wasn't like what I would expect, you know,
[35:24] Speaker 4: after that hard work.
[35:25] Speaker 2: So it was sometimes would be hard for me also.
[35:30] Speaker 2: And I also wanted for him to have this success.
[35:33] Speaker 2: I wanted us to have that success together.
[35:35] Speaker 4: And I feel like after this, same as a French,
[35:38] Speaker 4: I was like, this is what I wanted. Like, this
[35:41] Speaker 4: is what, why we work. This is why we keep
[35:43] Speaker 4: doing this. I was like, All the people who were
[35:48] Speaker 4: like saying to me that this is not working.
[35:50] Speaker 2: This is a relationship. It's not going to work. I
[35:53] Speaker 2: was like, huh?
[35:54] Speaker 4: Like I told you this is going to work and
[35:58] Speaker 4: I'm just going to show you.
[36:00] Speaker 1: Speaking of off court relationship, we, I don't know if
[36:03] Speaker 1: you saw it during Indian Wells, we did a hottie
[36:05] Speaker 1: coaches bracket.
[36:07] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[36:07] Speaker 1: And Sasha was in it. Did he ever bring up the,
[36:11] Speaker 1: that bracket to you?
[36:14] Speaker 2: We talked about it. I didn't know.
[36:16] Speaker 4: I think he actually, I feel like my agent was
[36:20] Speaker 4: the one who sent it into our group chat. And
[36:23] Speaker 4: we were like, just like immediate, like start laughing about it.
[36:26] Speaker 2: Like just like the whole thing. I was like, oh
[36:28] Speaker 2: my God, like I couldn't believe that we're doing this, honestly.
[36:32] Speaker 1: So you might find this funny. He was in the bracket.
[36:35] Speaker 1: He lost to Matt Reed in, like, the second round.
[36:38] Speaker 1: First round. First round. Then he DM'd us asking for
[36:42] Speaker 1: proof of vote. He thought there was voter fraud in
[36:44] Speaker 1: the Hottie Bracket Challenge.
[36:45] Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
[36:45] Speaker 2: You're the lucky messest.
[36:47] Speaker 1: Yeah. Then he pulled me aside at Indian Wells.
[36:50] Speaker 2: He was very offended. He was very offended.
[36:53] Speaker 3: Was his confidence a little shaken during that swing? You know,
[36:57] Speaker 3: as he rebounded?
[36:58] Speaker 4: It was a little bit because his wife was there.
[37:01] Speaker 4: So it was, yeah. So it was a little bit,
[37:05] Speaker 4: he was a little uncomfortable there.
[37:06] Speaker 1: That's so funny. All right. We know you love F1.
[37:10] Speaker 1: The Monaco Grand Prix was over the weekend. Do you
[37:12] Speaker 1: have a favorite F1? Who's your favorite driver on the
[37:14] Speaker 1: grid right now?
[37:16] Speaker 2: Max Verstappen.
[37:17] Speaker 1: Mine too, actually. No way!
[37:19] Speaker 2: Let's go.
[37:20] Speaker 4: Well, it wasn't a nice weekend, though.
[37:23] Speaker 1: No, I know. His car broke down early. Have you
[37:25] Speaker 1: ever driven an F1 car?
[37:27] Speaker 2: No, no, no.
[37:29] Speaker 1: Do you think you could figure it out?
[37:31] Speaker 2: No clue.
[37:32] Speaker 4: We were actually thinking to go with Sasha to try
[37:35] Speaker 4: a simulator. together in like while being in Madrid, it
[37:39] Speaker 4: was actually close by, but then we just, we reached out.
[37:42] Speaker 2: Final in double.
[37:43] Speaker 4: So it was like all very rushed to the going
[37:46] Speaker 4: to the Rome. So we couldn't do it, but I
[37:49] Speaker 4: love doing karting with my younger brother.
[37:54] Speaker 2: So I don't know.
[37:55] Speaker 4: I mean, obviously it's super different compared to the karting, but.
[38:00] Speaker 2: It's super cool. Maybe, maybe one day.
[38:02] Speaker 1: If you had to pick one player from the WTA
[38:04] Speaker 1: Tour that you would trust could get in an F1
[38:07] Speaker 1: car right now and drive it around the track, who
[38:09] Speaker 1: would that be? And then also, if you had to
[38:11] Speaker 1: pick two or three other women to lead the pit
[38:14] Speaker 1: crew for that car, who would you trust for that?
[38:17] Speaker 2: I feel like to lead the pit crew is going
[38:21] Speaker 2: to be Arena.
[38:22] Speaker 1: Lead the pit crew, Arena, all right.
[38:24] Speaker 2: Then....
[38:26] Speaker 4: I feel like Jess Pegula is going to be very
[38:28] Speaker 4: good leading also.
[38:32] Speaker 1: The driver is the one we're looking at. Who do
[38:35] Speaker 1: you trust to get in the car right now and
[38:37] Speaker 1: could figure out how to drive that car around a track?
[38:41] Speaker 1: It could be you, if you want to say that.
[38:45] Speaker 2: I don't have a.
[38:46] Speaker 4: Driver's license, so I wouldn't trust myself yet on this.
[38:49] Speaker 1: You don't have a driver's license?
[38:51] Speaker 2: No, I don't.
[38:53] Speaker 1: Okay so like when you're at indian wells in cincinnati
[38:56] Speaker 1: every player gets a car do you get a car
[38:58] Speaker 1: and just like sasha or your family will.
[38:59] Speaker 4: Drive it around sasha is driving me i'm a i'm
[39:01] Speaker 4: a passenger princess are you.
[39:03] Speaker 1: Planning to get passenger princess i love it are you
[39:05] Speaker 1: planning to get a license.
[39:07] Speaker 4: I'm i'm planning but i need to first learn how to.
[39:10] Speaker 3: Drive yeah if you got into any car right now
[39:13] Speaker 3: could you drive i can't.
[39:15] Speaker 2: But obviously where's the this is I have a question.
[39:20] Speaker 1: Where would you get your drive? Where do you where
[39:21] Speaker 1: would you get your license? Could you get it in
[39:23] Speaker 1: the U.S. or Europe or Russia? Is there one place.
[39:26] Speaker 2: Easier to get it? I would need to go to
[39:28] Speaker 2: Russia for that.
[39:30] Speaker 1: Is it easier to pass a driver's test there compared
[39:33] Speaker 1: to another country?
[39:36] Speaker 4: I don't think that I'm going to be able, as
[39:39] Speaker 4: a non-American citizen, to get it in the U.S.
[39:41] Speaker 2: I'm not sure about it. I need to do some
[39:44] Speaker 2: research on that.
[39:46] Speaker 1: Um all right well we hope you get your license
[39:48] Speaker 1: i our good friend francis tiafoe i think just got
[39:51] Speaker 1: his license so it's not like a big deal oh
[39:53] Speaker 1: okay francis didn't get it maybe not just got it
[39:55] Speaker 1: but a few years ago i.
[39:56] Speaker 4: Feel like me and mira should do some uh some
[39:58] Speaker 4: lessons together so we can have it together you.
[40:01] Speaker 1: Should you know what we'll we'll actually be in cincinnati
[40:05] Speaker 1: we can like go out to like an empty parking lot.
[40:07] Speaker 3: Are you playing are you playing memphis Uh, no, I'm
[40:10] Speaker 3: going to play Washington. Cause we'll be in Memphis as well.
[40:12] Speaker 1: Cincinnati. We're going to go out to like a parking lot.
[40:14] Speaker 1: We'll work on, we'll put up cones and stuff and
[40:16] Speaker 1: we can do some, some driving.
[40:19] Speaker 2: That's going to be so fun. Oh my God. I
[40:21] Speaker 2: was going to just break all the cones.
[40:23] Speaker 1: I feel like probably that sounds about right. Um, all right, Deanna,
[40:26] Speaker 1: thank you for joining us. That was a lot of fun. Again,
[40:29] Speaker 1: congrats on Roland Garros and keep it going and we'll
[40:31] Speaker 1: see you soon.
[40:32] Speaker 2: Thank you guys. It was fun.
[40:34] Speaker 1: Thank you.
[40:34] Speaker 2: Thank you.
[40:35] Speaker 4: Bye bye. All right.
[40:36] Speaker 1: Thanks to Deanna Schneider. I always liked her prior to
[40:40] Speaker 1: that interview. She's now like one of my like top
[40:43] Speaker 1: five favorite women on tour. She was fun. Didn't you think?
[40:47] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[40:47] Speaker 3: I mean, it's been nice because I sat with her
[40:49] Speaker 3: one time really only like at a slam. We have
[40:51] Speaker 3: the same, you know, her, John, you know, we all
[40:54] Speaker 3: have the same representation. So I sat at a table
[40:55] Speaker 3: with her. Great personality. This was a couple of years
[40:58] Speaker 3: back and fun to get a chance to talk to her.
[41:00] Speaker 1: It was great.
[41:01] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[41:01] Speaker 1: Speaking of personality, personality, hers is bubbly. Hers is fun.
[41:05] Speaker 1: Summer's here, and that means weather's heating up and tennis
[41:08] Speaker 1: is calling. If you've been training for a big tournament
[41:11] Speaker 1: and that suddenly hits you, your shoes have seen better days,
[41:14] Speaker 1: your outfit's looking tired, we've all got those tired outfits,
[41:17] Speaker 1: your strings need a little refresh.
[41:19] Speaker 3: And this is where Tennis Warehouse comes in. Racket, shoes, apparel, strings, balls,
[41:23] Speaker 3: you name it, they've got everything tennis-related you need for
[41:26] Speaker 3: a big summer.
[41:26] Speaker 1: It's real reviews from real players like Stevie and myself
[41:30] Speaker 1: and John, and also probably the best demo program in
[41:34] Speaker 1: all of tennis.
[41:35] Speaker 4: Absolutely.
[41:35] Speaker 3: They have the most knowledgeable customer service as well out there.
[41:38] Speaker 3: They're ready to help you get it right. 100% of
[41:40] Speaker 3: the time. And this is what they do. They are

[41:53] Speaker 1: Head to tenniswarehouse.com and gear up for summer. We promise
[41:56] Speaker 1: it'll be the least complicated part of your game. Um, Again, guys,
[42:00] Speaker 1: head to Tennis Warehouse. I still want to visit the
[42:02] Speaker 1: warehouse itself. As you know, I'm a warehouse guy.
[42:05] Speaker 3: We got all racket shoes. I want to go up
[42:06] Speaker 3: there and see it as well. Let's do it.
[42:07] Speaker 1: Yeah, let's go check it out. They're a great partner
[42:10] Speaker 1: of ours. So thanks again, guys. All right, let's go now.
[42:14] Speaker 1: We're going to go to life advice and fan questions.
[42:18] Speaker 1: Real quick, for our bracket winner for Roland Garros, it
[42:22] Speaker 1: was from Russian fan. We have a message from Russian fan.
[42:25] Speaker 1: Usually if you win that, you get to come on
[42:27] Speaker 1: the pod. He doesn't speak English. So he wrote us
[42:30] Speaker 1: a letter. I'm just going to summarize it real quick.
[42:34] Speaker 1: This guy's name is Alexey Bermistrov. He's a nuclear engineer
[42:41] Speaker 1: sector developing software for safety analysis of nuclear power plants. Whoa,
[42:46] Speaker 1: that's crazy. Basically, he loves tennis. He had Andreeva was
[42:52] Speaker 1: his pick to win it. He also had Marduk Kostiuk
[42:55] Speaker 1: going far. He loves watching tennis, loved watching John play,
[42:58] Speaker 1: big fans of the pod. One of the OG pod
[43:00] Speaker 1: guys who's listening to this. So Russia fan, Alexei, thank
[43:06] Speaker 1: you for the message. And, you know, that's what we
[43:11] Speaker 1: got from him. Now let's move on. Life advice. We're
[43:15] Speaker 1: going to start with Abby from Kentucky. She's got a
[43:18] Speaker 1: debate with her husband. Do a majority of top players
[43:21] Speaker 1: fly first class or not? Like top 20, are you
[43:24] Speaker 1: flying first class if the flight is several hours? Stevie,
[43:28] Speaker 1: top 20 players flying first class.
[43:30] Speaker 3: Good question.
[43:30] Speaker 4: Don't know.
[43:31] Speaker 3: It was never top 20. So it's kind of mean
[43:33] Speaker 3: to ask me that question. But it depends.
[43:37] Speaker 1: It depends. I.
[43:40] Speaker 3: I was a little frugal. I will say like I
[43:42] Speaker 3: would sit, you know, I was a loyal United guy. Um,
[43:46] Speaker 3: so I always sat like we have two exit rows.
[43:48] Speaker 3: I sat in the second exit row window. I like
[43:50] Speaker 3: to kind of just hunker down. So I usually wouldn't
[43:51] Speaker 3: buy first class unless like I won a tournament and
[43:54] Speaker 3: I was flying home. Then like, obviously like I'm, you know,
[43:57] Speaker 3: just clicking the first class button, but we get upgraded
[44:00] Speaker 3: a lot. It's kind of a perk of traveling 200
[44:03] Speaker 3: weeks a year. Um, so I didn't generally buy first
[44:07] Speaker 3: class tickets, but Usually got upgraded or kind of worked
[44:10] Speaker 3: the system. Sam and I, you're very good at beating
[44:14] Speaker 3: the system of airplane upgrades and whatnot.
[44:16] Speaker 1: You're good at it. Yeah. I would say top 10.
[44:19] Speaker 1: They flat out purchased the first class ticket every single time.
[44:23] Speaker 1: Maybe even up to top 15. There might be a
[44:25] Speaker 1: couple players... I might have a different answer than Stevie
[44:28] Speaker 1: that like don't fly first class all the time. And
[44:30] Speaker 1: that might be like from Madrid to Rome. Correct. Anything
[44:34] Speaker 1: over five hours, top 20, they're first class like every time.
[44:39] Speaker 3: I was on a plane going to Miami this year
[44:42] Speaker 3: to the event and we had like Rublev catching off
[44:46] Speaker 3: and these guys, they were all in the back.
[44:48] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[44:49] Speaker 3: I just thought about that.
[44:50] Speaker 1: It's surprising.
[44:51] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[44:52] Speaker 1: No, it's a... Look, even if you're top 20 in
[44:56] Speaker 1: the world, you're making good money. If a coach ticket's
[44:58] Speaker 1: $ 400 and the first class ticket is $ 2, 800, money's money.
[45:03] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[45:04] Speaker 1: So I think to give a definitive answer, top 10
[45:07] Speaker 1: is first class all the time. 10 to 20 maybe
[45:10] Speaker 1: is like a 50-50. Yep. International flights basically every time.
[45:17] Speaker 4: All right.
[45:17] Speaker 1: Good question. Next one is from Jacob Robinson from Katy, Texas.
[45:20] Speaker 1: I would love to understand the business of tennis. Example,
[45:22] Speaker 1: when a player plays at a major and they have
[45:24] Speaker 1: their team with them, is the player paying for each
[45:26] Speaker 1: team member's hotel, travel, food while at the tournament? Did
[45:29] Speaker 1: they submit expenses to someone? Just curious on how it works.
[45:34] Speaker 1: I can start on this. Yes, the player is responsible
[45:36] Speaker 1: for paying everyone's salary, food, travel expenses. That's what a
[45:41] Speaker 1: lot of people don't realize when you see, we talked
[45:43] Speaker 1: about in the episode last week, you get $ 107, 000 for
[45:46] Speaker 1: losing first round at Wimbledon. Great check, right? But you
[45:49] Speaker 1: also are paying like a coach, maybe a physio. Your
[45:52] Speaker 1: hotel room is paid for. You get a per diem,
[45:54] Speaker 1: but you might be paying your coach's hotel room. And
[45:56] Speaker 1: then like your flight, your coach's flight, if you have
[45:59] Speaker 1: a significant other, their flight. So like that starts to
[46:01] Speaker 1: chip away at that. pretty significantly but that's the biggest
[46:04] Speaker 1: difference between tennis an individual sport and a team sport
[46:07] Speaker 1: where like the team is paying for everything.
[46:09] Speaker 3: Yeah it's it's tricky because you know some tournaments or
[46:12] Speaker 3: most most tournaments will pay for your hotel but your
[46:15] Speaker 3: travel your coaches you know you're you're paying them everything
[46:19] Speaker 3: comes out of your pocket so it's kind of a
[46:20] Speaker 3: weird dynamic that you are paying your coach generally to
[46:23] Speaker 3: tell you what you don't want to hear sometimes so
[46:26] Speaker 3: it gets a It's, uh, all that comes out of, uh,
[46:31] Speaker 3: out of your own pocket. It's weird.
[46:32] Speaker 1: And they'll submit, um, like expenses. Like, you know, we
[46:36] Speaker 1: had a coach, like, here's my flight, $ 815. Here's the food.
[46:39] Speaker 1: Here's the hotel. At the end of the day, boom, boom, boom.
[46:41] Speaker 1: You know, for that last trip, you owe me, uh,
[46:43] Speaker 1: you know, $ 11, 312.
[46:43] Speaker 2: Yep.
[46:44] Speaker 1: And so, um, yeah, that's exactly how it works. All right.
[46:50] Speaker 1: Next up, Samantha from Orange County. Which host would survive
[46:54] Speaker 1: the longest on a reality show like Survivor and who
[46:56] Speaker 1: would be voted out first?
[46:58] Speaker 3: That's a good question.
[46:59] Speaker 1: We'd all be pretty bad on it. I just came back.
[47:01] Speaker 1: I was two days in the woods last week. I
[47:02] Speaker 1: hated every second of it. So I'm just going to
[47:04] Speaker 1: go ahead and remove myself from the– If.
[47:06] Speaker 3: We take it out of like an island format, like
[47:09] Speaker 3: if it's strictly like– maybe like Big Brother would be
[47:12] Speaker 3: a better scenario. Like none– the three of us would
[47:15] Speaker 3: be so– I would– I'd step one foot on an
[47:19] Speaker 3: island and be like, I'm good. I'm not an outdoorsman
[47:21] Speaker 3: to zero chance. But you give me a game show
[47:25] Speaker 3: or that where it's like you're in a house and
[47:27] Speaker 3: there's running water and food and a nice shower. I
[47:31] Speaker 3: feel like I could do pretty good.
[47:33] Speaker 1: I would trust you to make it the longest on
[47:36] Speaker 1: a show like that.
[47:37] Speaker 3: I would manipulate people. Probably not a strong suit of mine. Sorry,
[47:43] Speaker 3: it is a strong suit, but maybe not a strong
[47:44] Speaker 3: quality of mine.
[47:46] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[47:47] Speaker 3: But yes, the three of us in an outdoor survivor situation,
[47:49] Speaker 3: 30 seconds.
[47:51] Speaker 1: Yeah. John will get voted out first. He's got OCD
[47:54] Speaker 1: and he gets all weird if he doesn't have his
[47:56] Speaker 1: breakfast and stuff.
[47:57] Speaker 4: This is true.
[47:57] Speaker 3: But I feel like he would be valuable in that
[48:00] Speaker 3: setting because maybe he can reach really tall.
[48:02] Speaker 4: And get things.
[48:02] Speaker 1: Get the coconuts from the trees and things. Think about it.
[48:05] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[48:06] Speaker 1: That's a good point. All right. That was a fan question.
[48:12] Speaker 1: Let's go to life advice. John from Ohio asks, My
[48:15] Speaker 1: friends say I've told the same story so many times
[48:18] Speaker 1: that they can recite it word for word. Am I
[48:20] Speaker 1: obligated to retire the story?
[48:22] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[48:23] Speaker 1: You even know that you're telling the same story all
[48:25] Speaker 1: the time. If it's a new group, you can. This
[48:27] Speaker 1: is just– you got to have some social awareness here, John.
[48:32] Speaker 4: Right?
[48:32] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[48:33] Speaker 3: You got to retire that story unless it's like an all-timer, right?
[48:38] Speaker 3: And people are asking to hear it, right? Like, oh,
[48:42] Speaker 3: this guy has never heard it.
[48:44] Speaker 1: You know what?
[48:44] Speaker 3: A good– a good comparison would be like you and
[48:47] Speaker 3: your Russia story. You've probably told it so many times.
[48:49] Speaker 3: You never come out and talk about it, but I
[48:52] Speaker 3: feel like you get asked about it a lot. Like
[48:54] Speaker 3: if it, you know what I mean? Like if that
[48:56] Speaker 3: kind of comes up and I can tell like, you're
[48:59] Speaker 3: a little like, like I got to tell the story again,
[49:01] Speaker 3: kind of deal, but I get it. Like people want
[49:03] Speaker 3: to hear it. It's a great story, but I get it.
[49:06] Speaker 3: But you, you never outright come and just tell people like, Oh,
[49:09] Speaker 3: did you guys know I escaped from Russia? So it's, it's, um,
[49:13] Speaker 3: it's one of those things.
[49:14] Speaker 1: Yeah. I, If this is a great story, I guess
[49:16] Speaker 1: you can, but yeah, it's time to maybe move on.
[49:19] Speaker 1: uh we got one more here brad from georgia a
[49:21] Speaker 1: guy at my club has called me champ for so
[49:24] Speaker 1: long that i don't actually know if he knows my
[49:25] Speaker 1: name should i ask i'm not sure if he's mocking
[49:28] Speaker 1: me as if i'm not that great at tennis he
[49:30] Speaker 1: 100 doesn't know your name right that's an obvious one
[49:34] Speaker 1: that doesn't know um and should i ask no i
[49:37] Speaker 1: don't think he should Just keep– he's calling you champ.
[49:40] Speaker 1: That's pretty cool.
[49:41] Speaker 3: Yeah, it's– I'm guilty of this. Like, I'm super guilty. Like, hey,
[49:46] Speaker 3: I'm like a big, what's up, dude? Or what's up, man? Like,
[49:48] Speaker 3: great to see you. And then, like, I panic, like,
[49:50] Speaker 3: text the wife or, like, ask anybody, like, what's that
[49:53] Speaker 3: guy's name? I've met him 50 times. I'm like a–
[49:57] Speaker 3: I'm a big proponent of that. It's not disrespectful, like,
[50:02] Speaker 3: to a certain degree. But, like, unless you, like, outright
[50:05] Speaker 3: come and be like, hey, like, hey, I– completely forgot
[50:08] Speaker 3: your name. Like, what is it? You know, you just
[50:10] Speaker 3: own up to it. Then that works out well, but
[50:12] Speaker 3: it gets, it gets tricky.
[50:14] Speaker 1: Have some sympathy for the other guy. He doesn't know
[50:16] Speaker 1: your name, Brad, you know, you don't know people's names.
[50:19] Speaker 1: We've all been in this situation. Just keep the bit going.
[50:22] Speaker 1: Let them call you champ. And, and let's move on.
[50:25] Speaker 3: It'll, it'll all solve itself in a minute.
[50:27] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[50:27] Speaker 1: Speaking of speaking of champ, uh, Bowen branch, improve, improving
[50:32] Speaker 1: your sleep can start to feel overwhelming. New mattress, sleep trackers,
[50:35] Speaker 1: blackout curtains, supplements, Turns into a whole project.
[50:38] Speaker 3: And most people think it's the mattress, but a lot
[50:40] Speaker 3: of the time it's actually the bedding that you are
[50:42] Speaker 3: sleeping on every night. It's the most important thing.
[50:44] Speaker 1: So this bedding, we got this like a month ago.
[50:46] Speaker 1: They've been our partners. My wife is like not a
[50:48] Speaker 1: great sleeper. She's been sleeping like perfectly for a month.
[50:52] Speaker 1: The sheets are incredible. I'm going off the read right now.
[50:56] Speaker 1: Like they actually make a huge difference. And like my
[50:59] Speaker 1: wife is sleeping great with the sheets, not like supplements
[51:01] Speaker 1: and stuff. Yeah.
[51:02] Speaker 3: And noticing those small things, they add up over time
[51:06] Speaker 3: to lead to great sleep. Happy wife leads to a
[51:08] Speaker 3: happy life.
[51:09] Speaker 1: Yeah. The sheets are soft. Everything's more breathable. They look good.
[51:13] Speaker 1: It feels nice. You can get all cozy in the
[51:14] Speaker 1: bed at the end of the day.
[51:15] Speaker 3: Yeah. And once you start layering it like the waffle
[51:17] Speaker 3: blanket or the comforter, it all works together and it
[51:19] Speaker 3: just feels more complete.
[51:20] Speaker 1: Don't overthink your sleep. Don't get all those extra crazy supplements.
[51:24] Speaker 1: Just get good bedding with bowl and branch.
[51:26] Speaker 3: There's no complicated setup, no new routine, just a noticeable
[51:29] Speaker 3: difference right away.
