Sam, John and Steve break down everything happening midway through the Rome Open, starting with 20-year-old Dino Prizmic shocking his idol Novak Djokovic, and what that loss could mean for Novak heading into Paris. Meanwhile, Jannik Sinner continues to look like a machine built in a secret Italian lab, entering Paris with better odds than prime Rafa once had. Is it the field… or is Sinner just on another level? On the women’s side, Aryna Sabalenka loses to Sorana Cirstea while battling a lower-back issue, sparking a debate about whether Italian hotel beds are destroying players’ backs. Things also get heated during the Fonseca-Medjedovic drama, where Joao earns our Major respect for courageously asking Brazilian fans to calm things down after the atmosphere started drifting into football territory. Plus: Grand Slam boycott rumors, “cease and assist”, and Sam continuing his all-out war against Friday podcast releases. 00:00 Intro: We're Back! 00:50 Sam's Rant: Thursday better than Friday 04:57 Djokovic Upset Concerns 11:16 Fils Injury Watch 14:11 Our Family Tennis Favorites 15:40 Sinner Seeking Golden Masters 22:10 American Men Struggles 24:35 Jodar vs. Tien 26:23 Fonseca and Brazilian Crowd Controversy 29:19 Medjedovic Ice Cold Win 30:36 Sabalenka Upset and Back Issue 35:39 Major News: Rune Withdrawl and Slam Boycott 44:00 Mannarino Clay (Bad) Streak 45:28 Servebot Double-Bagel Pegula 46:13 The Name Debate 49:01 Wrap Up and Sign Off See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

[0:00] Speaker 1: All right, we are back and lots to catch up
[0:02] Speaker 1: on in Roma. Let's get the show started.
[0:04] Speaker 2: Jack Jones, Stevie and Sam. Got close a few times,
[0:08] Speaker 2: never won a slam.
[0:10] Speaker 1: Nothing major. All right, welcome back, everyone, to Nothing Major.
[0:14] Speaker 1: This is episode 173. Gosh, we've been very, very consistent.
[0:20] Speaker 1: John Isner here with Steve Johnson, Sam Querrey, Charlie Fox,
[0:23] Speaker 1: and the whole team at SIFT Creative. Obviously, it is...
[0:29] Speaker 1: Rome Week, still going on on this Monday morning, right
[0:32] Speaker 1: in the dead middle of the tournament. So we do
[0:36] Speaker 1: not have a winner's circle, of course, but there is
[0:42] Speaker 1: lots to catch up on in this tournament. There's been
[0:45] Speaker 1: a lot of really, really big news. And before we
[0:47] Speaker 1: get started, Sam just raised his hand. Maybe he has
[0:49] Speaker 1: another rant or something.
[0:51] Speaker 2: No, but I have two things I want to discuss
[0:53] Speaker 2: openly on the pod. One, I think we got to
[0:56] Speaker 2: move our Friday shows to Thursday.
[0:59] Speaker 1: You guys' thoughts?
[0:59] Speaker 2: I feel like our Friday shows are coming out late
[1:02] Speaker 2: in the day. And Friday, people might be busy. They
[1:05] Speaker 2: don't listen to them. And then Saturday, Sunday, they're not
[1:08] Speaker 2: listening to them. And then by the time Monday rolls around,
[1:10] Speaker 2: we have our Monday show. Like there's no reason our
[1:12] Speaker 2: Monday shows should be outperforming our Friday shows by like double.
[1:17] Speaker 1: You guys agree? And by the way, this is– Sam,
[1:21] Speaker 1: no one has brought this up in our group chat
[1:24] Speaker 1: at all. So this is the first time I'm hearing
[1:25] Speaker 1: this from Sam.
[1:26] Speaker 2: No one's– Not in the group chat. I brought up
[1:29] Speaker 2: a person, I think, on a call one time.
[1:32] Speaker 3: Sam has broached this subject before.
[1:35] Speaker 1: Thoughts on that, John? Totally. I'm definitely open to that
[1:39] Speaker 1: if the numbers don't lie.
[1:42] Speaker 2: There's no reason our Monday show should be outperforming the
[1:45] Speaker 2: Friday shows by that much.
[1:46] Speaker 1: We've got to move it to Thursday. It's on the suits.
[1:49] Speaker 2: Thursday could be.
[1:51] Speaker 1: Good because that's a– then let people– I like it.
[1:56] Speaker 1: So it comes out at like five o'clock on Friday.
[1:57] Speaker 1: Then people are busy and then they forget about it
[1:59] Speaker 1: on the weekend. Yes.
[2:00] Speaker 2: And then the Monday show hits. They don't even watch
[2:01] Speaker 2: the Friday show. We have so many good Friday episodes.
[2:04] Speaker 1: So it's coming out on roughly five Eastern. No. Yeah.
[2:11] Speaker 1: Five Eastern on Friday. People are getting their weekend started already.
[2:15] Speaker 1: No one's listening to a pod on Friday night. I'm not.
[2:17] Speaker 1: I don't care what the podcast is. It's what?
[2:20] Speaker 2: People let us know, but I think we got to
[2:22] Speaker 2: make the move to Thursday on the Friday pod.
[2:24] Speaker 1: It's actually a really good point because I listen to
[2:26] Speaker 1: our podcast on like Tuesday or Wednesday every so often. Yeah.
[2:30] Speaker 1: This is a must change.
[2:31] Speaker 2: And then the other thing is we threw this in
[2:34] Speaker 2: the group chat. Everyone, our European pet peeve segments, the
[2:39] Speaker 2: British pet peeve segments, life advice, things we've been doing
[2:42] Speaker 2: for a year. Sure enough, last week on the player's box,
[2:47] Speaker 2: You guys saw what they did. They did life advice
[2:51] Speaker 2: and pet peeves. Do we send them a cease and assist?
[2:56] Speaker 1: It's desist.
[2:57] Speaker 3: Desist.
[2:59] Speaker 1: That's my point. I don't even know what it is.
[3:02] Speaker 1: We don't want to assist them. We want to desist them.
[3:05] Speaker 1: Are we flattered?
[3:07] Speaker 2: They just straight up jacking the segments.
[3:11] Speaker 1: Go ahead, Stevie.
[3:12] Speaker 2: It's okay.
[3:12] Speaker 3: Imitation is a form of flattery. It is what it is.
[3:19] Speaker 1: I'll say this. I love those girls. I think they
[3:23] Speaker 1: do a great job. I think it's awesome. Their vibe
[3:28] Speaker 1: is the same as ours. We've had a 14-month head
[3:32] Speaker 1: start on them. I have no issue. I think they
[3:35] Speaker 1: might have a little bit of a different audience than us, obviously.
[3:38] Speaker 1: We have a larger male audience than they do. They
[3:42] Speaker 1: probably have a larger female audience than we do. I'm
[3:46] Speaker 1: good with it, truthfully.
[3:48] Speaker 2: I Yeah, I guess I don't know. Maybe they gave
[3:50] Speaker 2: us credit, but I don't even know if we have attorneys.
[3:53] Speaker 2: But if we do, maybe we can just draft up
[3:54] Speaker 2: the cease and desist.
[3:57] Speaker 1: Cease and desist. Cease and desist.
[4:00] Speaker 3: You got to figure out the verbiage before you start
[4:03] Speaker 3: suing people.
[4:06] Speaker 1: I love their, I got to say they had their
[4:09] Speaker 1: gelato review in Rome. Like, you know, food reviews. I
[4:11] Speaker 1: love everything they're doing. Yeah.
[4:14] Speaker 3: Except for the segments that they're doing.
[4:16] Speaker 1: Intellectual theft at its finest.
[4:19] Speaker 3: Yeah okay i'm sure no one else has done life
[4:22] Speaker 3: advice before us.
[4:25] Speaker 1: No one has uh yeah exactly yeah they had a
[4:28] Speaker 1: life advice thing pop up it was uh it's interesting
[4:31] Speaker 1: um it's good though it's good i like it i
[4:33] Speaker 1: like it there's there there's room for you know these
[4:37] Speaker 1: these two rocket ships there's there's room for both of
[4:40] Speaker 1: them okay um shall we talk rome Yes, we can
[4:45] Speaker 1: talk about it. Let's talk about it. Okay, so the WTA–
[4:48] Speaker 1: I believe the WTA is fully into their round of
[4:50] Speaker 1: 16 while the men are– some round of 32s are
[4:54] Speaker 1: going on like right now as we chat. The big
[4:57] Speaker 1: news so far is 20-year-old Dino Prismich who had took
[5:03] Speaker 1: out Shelton last week in Madrid.
[5:06] Speaker 3: Is that correct?
[5:07] Speaker 4: Yep.
[5:07] Speaker 1: Yeah, 7-6-3. Yep, 7-6-3. He's up and coming. The big
[5:11] Speaker 1: result is he took out his childhood– Idol, which is,
[5:16] Speaker 1: he said that. Djokovic, 6-4 in the third. Djokovic won
[5:22] Speaker 1: the first set easily 6-2 and then seemed to just
[5:26] Speaker 1: struggle a little bit physically. I'm going to leave the
[5:32] Speaker 1: floor open for anyone who wants to take this. I
[5:33] Speaker 1: don't know if you guys have been at Tennis Channel,
[5:34] Speaker 1: but did anyone see this match and what's the concern
[5:39] Speaker 1: level here for Djokovic? I mean, just to play one
[5:41] Speaker 1: set and then seem to be struggling after that certainly
[5:43] Speaker 1: is not encouraging.
[5:44] Speaker 3: Yeah, he kind of was struggling physically, you know, didn't
[5:48] Speaker 3: look great. And that's kind of a, now a reoccurring
[5:51] Speaker 3: thing for him in Rome. He's had it the last
[5:53] Speaker 3: couple of years where like he hasn't been himself there.
[5:56] Speaker 3: I mean, he's gotten through some matches, but he was sick.
[5:59] Speaker 3: I think it was a couple of years ago was
[6:00] Speaker 3: like kind of throwing up on court behind like the
[6:03] Speaker 3: Rolex sign in the back. And then either two years
[6:05] Speaker 3: ago or three years ago, like, I don't know if
[6:07] Speaker 3: you guys remember, one of the fans dropped a water
[6:09] Speaker 3: bottle on his head while he was signing autographs after
[6:11] Speaker 3: a win.
[6:12] Speaker 1: So he's had some odd things.
[6:15] Speaker 3: In Rome happen. But they were showing some of the stats.
[6:19] Speaker 3: I watched the match. He was 18-0, if I'm not mistaken,
[6:23] Speaker 3: in his first match at Rome over the course of
[6:26] Speaker 3: his career. So obviously, this is a surprising result for
[6:30] Speaker 3: him to lose his first match. But He didn't look
[6:32] Speaker 3: great physically after that first set. I don't know what
[6:35] Speaker 3: it was. It just is strange to me. I think
[6:39] Speaker 3: he must not have been feeling great physically because of
[6:41] Speaker 3: the fact that in the third set, he was losing
[6:44] Speaker 3: some of those rallies that were like 10 balls, 12 balls,
[6:47] Speaker 3: 14 balls. He was going for the winner more so
[6:52] Speaker 3: than Prismich was, which has never been done in the
[6:54] Speaker 3: history to Novak Djokovic in his career where he has
[6:57] Speaker 3: pulled the trigger first. to then try and shorten points
[7:01] Speaker 3: against somebody like that. You know, he's done it against,
[7:04] Speaker 3: you know, maybe centers or the Alcaraz's as of late
[7:07] Speaker 3: in the Rafa's before him, but it's weird to see
[7:10] Speaker 3: him kind of shorten those points when it gets into
[7:12] Speaker 3: like the, you know, those, those long grueling points, because
[7:16] Speaker 3: that's what we have seen Novak do over the course
[7:18] Speaker 3: of his entire career is win those. But great for
[7:21] Speaker 3: Prismich seems like he's kind of a younger guy, like
[7:24] Speaker 3: making his mark on the rise to, crazy wins the
[7:27] Speaker 3: last couple of weeks. So his confidence has got to
[7:29] Speaker 3: be through the roof. And I was impressed with how
[7:31] Speaker 3: he served it out, you know, for a 20 year
[7:32] Speaker 3: old over Novak, lost the first point in that game
[7:35] Speaker 3: and then just kind of cruise the next four points.
[7:38] Speaker 3: Like it's not easy to do to serve out a match,
[7:40] Speaker 3: not easy to serve out a match against Novak Djokovic.
[7:43] Speaker 3: So kudos to him. It was a good, good win.
[7:45] Speaker 2: It's like surprising, but it's not that surprising to me.
[7:51] Speaker 2: In the last like couple of years, he's like thrown
[7:52] Speaker 2: in results like this. He hasn't played since Indian Wells.
[7:56] Speaker 2: I'm trying to look up right now what his odds
[7:58] Speaker 2: are to win the French Open, but he's still the
[8:01] Speaker 2: third favorite right now, which I kind of find surprising, honestly.
[8:06] Speaker 1: Even without Alcaraz, it's a little surprising right now. It's
[8:09] Speaker 1: amazing that.
[8:10] Speaker 2: We're finally saying that.
[8:12] Speaker 1: Yeah, we're finally saying that.
[8:15] Speaker 3: I don't know why you would be surprised that he's
[8:17] Speaker 3: not the third favorite.
[8:18] Speaker 1: I'm not shocked. I'm a little surprised.
[8:20] Speaker 3: I mean, he's had one time since... 2020 that he
[8:26] Speaker 3: hasn't made the semis or better of a slam. And
[8:29] Speaker 3: that was at the, you know, the U S open
[8:30] Speaker 3: in 2023. Like he makes the semis of every slam or,
[8:33] Speaker 3: you know, finals. Like he's the, he's the third best
[8:35] Speaker 3: guy at slams.
[8:36] Speaker 1: It's getting harder and harder though. And he's getting older
[8:38] Speaker 1: and old.
[8:39] Speaker 2: Like, do you take him against La Hetchka straight up
[8:41] Speaker 2: right now in Roland Garros?
[8:42] Speaker 1: You take Novak? Yeah.
[8:44] Speaker 3: Until somebody proves me otherwise.
[8:45] Speaker 1: I probably do too, but.
[8:47] Speaker 3: Until somebody proves us otherwise, he is the third favorite
[8:51] Speaker 3: without Carlos. Or sorry, with Carlos and, I don't know
[8:55] Speaker 3: outside of that, but nobody's proven the fact that they
[8:58] Speaker 3: can do it in three out of five. So why
[9:01] Speaker 3: bet against them?
[9:01] Speaker 2: You got to be a little more worried, though, this
[9:03] Speaker 2: year going into Roland Garros.
[9:04] Speaker 1: For sure. You just have to be. Because if he's
[9:06] Speaker 1: struggling physically right now in Rome in a two out
[9:09] Speaker 1: of three set match, it's more like injury concern as
[9:13] Speaker 1: opposed to fitness concern. Maybe. Because it's two out of
[9:16] Speaker 1: three sets. He's one of the fittest guys in the world.
[9:20] Speaker 2: It's one thing if he loses the Petty Perry card.
[9:22] Speaker 2: He just serves off the court and he still looks good.
[9:24] Speaker 2: But you said it, John.
[9:25] Speaker 1: He didn't physically. He just looked winded.
[9:28] Speaker 3: I just don't see anybody beating him in the first week.
[9:30] Speaker 3: That goes five. You just assume Novak beats Prismich and
[9:33] Speaker 3: he moves on.
[9:35] Speaker 1: Yeah. I'm with you. But if he doesn't have a
[9:37] Speaker 1: good Roland Garros, then it kind of changes everything for
[9:40] Speaker 1: his Wimbledon prep. Because we're so accustomed to him. Obviously,
[9:45] Speaker 1: going so deep at Roland Garros, he's had a lot
[9:46] Speaker 1: of matches in his system, and he doesn't play any
[9:50] Speaker 1: grass court warm-ups. He doesn't need it, right? But you
[9:54] Speaker 1: if he's coming into after Roland Garros with only two
[9:57] Speaker 1: matches since in two or three matches since Indian Wells
[10:00] Speaker 1: you got to think he might want to play a
[10:02] Speaker 1: grass court tune-up ahead of Wimbledon but.
[10:05] Speaker 3: If he makes second week of the French I don't
[10:07] Speaker 3: think he plays a grass court.
[10:07] Speaker 1: I'm with you there if he makes second week.
[10:09] Speaker 3: Yeah he loses in the first second round like you
[10:11] Speaker 3: know he's gonna play that Queens or Holly week and
[10:14] Speaker 3: then you know he'll be fine for Wimby because Wimby
[10:16] Speaker 3: is the one Obviously, I'm not in Novak's body. I'm
[10:19] Speaker 3: not in his team, but that would be the one
[10:21] Speaker 3: they are most likely going to win if there is
[10:23] Speaker 3: one of the slams. The French is going to be hard.
[10:27] Speaker 1: Not as hard now without Alcraz. One of those heavy
[10:31] Speaker 1: days at Roland Garros is not good for Djokovic. It's
[10:34] Speaker 1: just at almost 39 years old.
[10:36] Speaker 2: Yeah, and he's got to play Menchique or Mahatch, although
[10:40] Speaker 2: Mahatch is probably a plot.
[10:41] Speaker 3: No, I wouldn't say Mahatch. Mahatch might not play.
[10:46] Speaker 1: I told you I'm a little sick. I wish you
[10:47] Speaker 1: didn't say that. You made me laugh. Um, yeah, Mahatch would, he,
[10:51] Speaker 1: he pulled out again, by the way, we're not going
[10:52] Speaker 1: to spend this a lot of time talking to Mahatch,
[10:54] Speaker 1: but he didn't take the court against Medvedev in, in Rome. Um,
[10:58] Speaker 1: but I mean, that's, we'll see. I mean, you know,
[11:02] Speaker 1: he knows what he needs to do best. Yeah, he does.
[11:04] Speaker 1: He does. He does. Um, he's every surprises us all
[11:08] Speaker 1: every single time, every single time a grand slam rolls around, but, uh, let's,
[11:11] Speaker 1: let's move on, um, to some other notable, I guess, results.
[11:16] Speaker 1: uh in rome arthur feese retired after 22 um minutes
[11:25] Speaker 1: he said he was trying everything for his uh hip
[11:28] Speaker 1: injury against um a wild card pellegrino what a name
[11:34] Speaker 1: what an italian name andrea pellegrino what a name it's
[11:38] Speaker 1: one of the best names in sports yeah um so
[11:42] Speaker 1: He was up 4-0? No. Down 4-0. Down 4-0, yeah. Okay, okay.
[11:47] Speaker 2: I think hopefully for Feese, he's being like overly cautious
[11:50] Speaker 2: because of the other injury. And he's like, I have
[11:52] Speaker 2: like the slightest little thing in my hip. Roland Garros
[11:55] Speaker 2: starts in two weeks. Shut it down here because he's
[11:58] Speaker 2: been playing lights out tennis for the last two months.
[12:02] Speaker 2: That's what I'm going to think it is and assume
[12:04] Speaker 2: that it is that he's, overly cautious because of what
[12:06] Speaker 2: happened for eight months last year.
[12:08] Speaker 1: Yeah, Stevie, do you think that just the sheer physicality
[12:13] Speaker 1: of his game is an issue? Because you watch him play,
[12:16] Speaker 1: and every ball is Mach 10. It's like kind of Rafa,
[12:20] Speaker 1: even more so than Rafa, how he plays and how
[12:22] Speaker 1: physical he plays and how much he's hitting out on
[12:24] Speaker 1: every single ball. His body just takes a toll over
[12:27] Speaker 1: the course of time playing like that.
[12:29] Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that is definitely got to be a worry.
[12:32] Speaker 3: But I think you can't change that, though.
[12:34] Speaker 1: It's like you're.
[12:35] Speaker 3: Not going to change it. But the way he's come
[12:38] Speaker 3: back from his back injury this year and like the
[12:40] Speaker 3: record he's had at every event he's played, you know,
[12:43] Speaker 3: he has been good since he's come back from injury.
[12:45] Speaker 3: So maybe he realizes that he doesn't need to play
[12:47] Speaker 3: every week. Again, this just goes back to the two
[12:50] Speaker 3: week master series. They're too long. There's too much tennis
[12:53] Speaker 3: being played. The off days aren't really off days. It's
[12:56] Speaker 3: a long stretch for these guys. So for him, I
[12:58] Speaker 3: think it's just what Sam said. I've been wrong not
[13:01] Speaker 3: too long ago on this podcast about an injury not
[13:03] Speaker 3: affecting somebody at Roland Garros. And so now Carlos is out.
[13:07] Speaker 3: So I'm going to assume I'm going to be 50-50
[13:09] Speaker 3: here and assume that this is exactly what Sam said.
[13:11] Speaker 3: This is precaution. He's going to like his chances at
[13:14] Speaker 3: the French. He's going to get healthy. He's going to
[13:15] Speaker 3: go home. He's going to rest, relax, and be ready
[13:18] Speaker 3: to rock at the French because the French needs him.
[13:22] Speaker 3: If not for like a great storyline, he's electric. He's phenomenal.
[13:26] Speaker 3: He's a great tennis player. He's going to have the
[13:28] Speaker 3: crowd on his side. Chatrier and Longmont are going to be,
[13:31] Speaker 3: you know, packed when he plays every one of his matches.
[13:33] Speaker 3: And so hopefully he's healthy and 100% going into that one.
[13:37] Speaker 1: Yeah, I think this is just precaution because it was
[13:40] Speaker 1: after Roland Garros last year that he then had his,
[13:43] Speaker 1: you know, had the back injury and had to not
[13:45] Speaker 1: play forever. So yeah, he's played a lot of tennis
[13:48] Speaker 1: and he's done incredibly well, Stevie had said, since coming
[13:50] Speaker 1: back from that injury. I mean, to be able to
[13:52] Speaker 1: pick up his level like that off of a back
[13:55] Speaker 1: injury too. It's one thing to have like an elbow
[13:57] Speaker 1: injury or something. You can still train, you know. Like
[14:00] Speaker 1: maybe you can't hit many balls, but you still maybe
[14:02] Speaker 1: keep your shape. But you got to imagine that he
[14:04] Speaker 1: had a stress fracture in his back. Came back very,
[14:07] Speaker 1: very well from that. So we wish him the best. Sam,
[14:11] Speaker 1: you getting another latte? No. Oh, okay. Okay. Sam's oldest. No. Youngest.
[14:18] Speaker 1: That's Owen. Yeah, sorry. That's Owen. My bad.
[14:20] Speaker 3: The juice is loose.
[14:21] Speaker 1: They look kind of alike.
[14:22] Speaker 3: Same gene pool.
[14:23] Speaker 1: Hey, who's your favorite tennis player? Carlos Alcaraz. Carlos Alcaraz.
[14:29] Speaker 1: All right. Do you know who my oldest son's favorite
[14:32] Speaker 1: tennis player is? This is classic. David Nelbandian? No. Nicholas Mahout.
[14:40] Speaker 1: And by the way, no. Hobbs has met. He's been
[14:44] Speaker 1: up close and personal. He's hit balls with Roger Federer before,
[14:48] Speaker 1: which is incredible. he's watched Carlos Alcaraz from 10 feet
[14:52] Speaker 1: away practice so Hobbs has had a lot of his
[14:55] Speaker 1: favorite tennis players Riley Opelka well.
[14:56] Speaker 4: He's a bot Hobbs is a bot loves Riley yeah
[15:00] Speaker 4: loves Riley my boys love Riley too though because Riley's
[15:03] Speaker 4: like the nicest guy and like anytime you see him
[15:05] Speaker 4: he'll come right up and be like oh how are
[15:07] Speaker 4: the boys and he like.
[15:07] Speaker 1: Hangs out with them yeah so anyways I thought that's
[15:11] Speaker 1: kind of kind of funny um I always tell Riley
[15:14] Speaker 1: that he gets a huge kick out of it. He's like,
[15:15] Speaker 1: no way, man. He goes, what's wrong with Hobbs? You know,
[15:18] Speaker 1: it's so funny. It's classic. Um, but anyways, uh, we,
[15:22] Speaker 1: we hope these can recover well for, for RG. Cause
[15:24] Speaker 1: there's gonna be some great storylines without Alcaraz. We'll talk
[15:27] Speaker 1: about this on some later episodes on the French side.
[15:29] Speaker 1: I think it's him. And of course it's Monfils as well.
[15:32] Speaker 1: We will talk about that in some coming episodes, but
[15:34] Speaker 1: there's a lot of intrigue going forward on the men's
[15:36] Speaker 1: side there at, at RG. Um, All right, back to
[15:40] Speaker 1: the most dominant player in the world right now on
[15:43] Speaker 1: the men's side. Maybe one of the most dominant athletes,
[15:45] Speaker 1: flat out, period, in the world right now is Yannick Sinner.
[15:49] Speaker 1: He is going for his first Rome title. And at
[15:52] Speaker 1: just 24 years old, he's going for the career Master
[15:57] Speaker 1: Series slam. Completely absurd. He's going also for, you know,
[16:02] Speaker 1: he hasn't lost at a Master Series event. He's won
[16:07] Speaker 1: five in a row. And so he's going for six.
[16:10] Speaker 1: We've talked about this before, but everyone likes his chances
[16:15] Speaker 1: to win Rome and get that career Master Series slam.
[16:18] Speaker 1: Djokovic achieved it at 31. He's trying to do this
[16:22] Speaker 1: at 24. Sam, just try to put this in perspective
[16:25] Speaker 1: a little bit with what Sinner's doing.
[16:26] Speaker 2: I know tennis to the general fan is all about
[16:30] Speaker 2: the majors. But for Carlos, if he wins this to
[16:34] Speaker 2: complete all nine Master Series at 24.
[16:35] Speaker 1: Yannick.
[16:38] Speaker 2: Yannick, sorry, I said Carl. I meant Yannick, is pretty nuts.
[16:42] Speaker 2: That is one of those feats, one of those stats
[16:46] Speaker 2: that within the tennis world.
[16:48] Speaker 1: You're blown away. You're like, holy smokes. Absolutely.
[16:51] Speaker 2: Because these Masters Series, every player plays these Masters Series.
[16:54] Speaker 2: The Masters Series are like mini majors. They're not three
[16:57] Speaker 2: out of five, but they're so tough to win. And
[16:59] Speaker 2: now they're 12-day long events.
[17:02] Speaker 1: I don't know. It's something we keep talking about. John,
[17:07] Speaker 1: I'm so distracted. He's got his dog barking. I'm sorry.
[17:10] Speaker 1: I think he'd be... There he is. What's the dog's name, Stevie?
[17:12] Speaker 1: This one's Charlotte. What's your dog's name? I have two dogs.
[17:16] Speaker 1: Charlotte and Molly. Yeah, yeah. I have two dogs.
[17:18] Speaker 2: But yeah, Yannick's just... And now he's the overwhelming favorite
[17:21] Speaker 2: twin Rome and Roland Garros.
[17:24] Speaker 1: He's the most.
[17:25] Speaker 2: One of the most dominant athletes in all of sports
[17:27] Speaker 2: around the world currently.
[17:28] Speaker 1: Yeah. And Stevie, he's just... What is he? Two wins
[17:32] Speaker 1: away from Djokovic's record of 30, what is it? Is
[17:36] Speaker 1: that what he's going for, Stevie? I think he's 31.
[17:38] Speaker 3: Two wins from tying, three from.
[17:39] Speaker 1: Two wins from tying, three from winning.
[17:41] Speaker 3: Not mistaken.
[17:41] Speaker 1: He plays Popperin today. He's just so dialed right now.
[17:46] Speaker 1: Is there... What is it going to take to beat
[17:53] Speaker 1: this guy in Rome and then even more than probably at...
[17:57] Speaker 1: Roland Garros. What type of player is it going to
[18:00] Speaker 1: take and what is that player going to have to
[18:02] Speaker 1: accomplish game plan wise to try to beat Sinner? I
[18:06] Speaker 1: think we spoke about this a little last week. Is
[18:08] Speaker 1: there anything anyone could do besides just hope he has
[18:11] Speaker 1: an off day or hope he's not feeling that great physically?
[18:14] Speaker 1: I don't think so.
[18:15] Speaker 3: That's kind of it. I mean, all his close calls
[18:19] Speaker 3: or losses to, you know, outside of Novak and Carlos,
[18:23] Speaker 3: that's what it has been, right? Like, it's... It just
[18:26] Speaker 3: hasn't looked his best. And even if you are a
[18:29] Speaker 3: big server, I mean, John, you've played him. You're the
[18:31] Speaker 3: best serve in the history of tennis. Like you still
[18:33] Speaker 3: don't have a chance.
[18:35] Speaker 1: No.
[18:35] Speaker 3: Like, you know what I mean? Like you just, some
[18:37] Speaker 3: days it doesn't matter how good you serve. Like, unless
[18:39] Speaker 3: you are literally winning every point off of an ace
[18:42] Speaker 3: or a first ball winner. Like as soon as that ball,
[18:44] Speaker 3: I don't know how you felt, but if you got
[18:46] Speaker 3: to like a three or four ball rally. I don't
[18:48] Speaker 3: think you like your chances too often.
[18:50] Speaker 1: No, no, for sure. And what he does, like even
[18:52] Speaker 1: if you have a big serve, like on clay, if
[18:54] Speaker 1: you have a hot day, like yes, big servers can
[18:57] Speaker 1: be very tough to play against. But Sinner stays like
[19:02] Speaker 1: the little difference. I'm not comparing him to Rafa, but
[19:05] Speaker 1: like the difference between Rafa, he'd go way back and
[19:07] Speaker 1: he's like looping that return. He's not necessarily like nuking
[19:11] Speaker 1: that return from 15 feet behind the baseline. Sinner is
[19:15] Speaker 1: nuking it. 15 feet behind the baseline off of a
[19:18] Speaker 1: first serve. So you can, he's way back and you
[19:21] Speaker 1: can serve and volley. Oh, I'm going to take his
[19:22] Speaker 1: time away and shorten the court, but he can, he
[19:25] Speaker 1: can hit a winner from 15 feet behind the baseline
[19:27] Speaker 1: on the return off of a first serve if you
[19:29] Speaker 1: serve and volley. So his penetration that he gets on
[19:32] Speaker 1: that return from, from way back is something that, you know,
[19:37] Speaker 1: I don't think we've seen anyone ever have that much
[19:40] Speaker 1: on the return from so far back behind the baseline.
[19:43] Speaker 1: Let me compare to Rafa real quick. Yeah.
[19:45] Speaker 2: Sinner's odds to win Roland Garros right now, minus 275.
[19:47] Speaker 2: That's greater odds. odds to win Roland Garros than Rafa
[19:52] Speaker 2: ever was, even at Rafa at his peak.
[19:54] Speaker 3: That's, it's not as surprising given the rest of the field.
[19:58] Speaker 1: No, for sure. It's still crazy. But go back to 2000.
[19:59] Speaker 1: When was Rafa at his peak?
[20:00] Speaker 3: 2000. His best odds were 2010. 2010. So 2010, if
[20:10] Speaker 3: you take out Roger and Novak.
[20:11] Speaker 1: That was the year I took him to five sets,
[20:13] Speaker 1: I think. Yeah, minus 250 that year.
[20:15] Speaker 2: No, 2018, minus 255, 2018, but whatever.
[20:18] Speaker 3: If you take out Roger and Novak that year, what
[20:20] Speaker 3: is his odds?
[20:21] Speaker 1: Yeah, of course.
[20:22] Speaker 2: Probably more than minus 275.
[20:25] Speaker 3: Going back to John's previous point, I think Feast has
[20:28] Speaker 3: the game. Arthur Feast has the game to beat him
[20:30] Speaker 3: the way he plays, right? He hits the crap out
[20:32] Speaker 3: of the ball. He goes big. He seems fearless. But
[20:36] Speaker 3: that is hard to do over the course of a
[20:38] Speaker 3: three or four hour. You're not going to just two, two,
[20:40] Speaker 3: and two center at a slam.
[20:41] Speaker 1: Of course.
[20:42] Speaker 3: It's not just how it happens. So it's going to
[20:45] Speaker 3: be a sustained effort. That's going to be one hell
[20:47] Speaker 3: of a day of tennis. And hopefully I'm sitting by
[20:50] Speaker 3: a couch and get to watch it because that would
[20:51] Speaker 3: be incredible.
[20:52] Speaker 1: So Sam said the center's odds are minus 275. For
[20:55] Speaker 1: those who don't know, if you want to win $ 100
[20:58] Speaker 1: on Yannick's center, you have to risk $ 275. And he's
[21:04] Speaker 1: got to win seven straight matches. And if he does that,
[21:07] Speaker 1: you risk 275 and you get 375 back. You know,
[21:11] Speaker 1: you're putting in your two. So you only make $ 100
[21:13] Speaker 1: off of risking 275. It's crazy, crazy odds for just
[21:18] Speaker 1: one person to win a tournament and have to win
[21:21] Speaker 1: seven straight three out of five set matches. It's insane. Yeah,
[21:26] Speaker 1: I mean, look, he's going to get to 32 here.
[21:30] Speaker 1: He's going to break Djokovic's record. He's going to break
[21:32] Speaker 1: the record for youngest man ever to win all the
[21:35] Speaker 1: Master Series events.
[21:35] Speaker 3: That's crazy. I mean, Sam's right. Within the tennis world,
[21:39] Speaker 3: if you're a casual tennis fan, Like, oh, Master Series, like, okay,
[21:43] Speaker 3: you know, whatever. But for us, if you're in it, like,
[21:46] Speaker 3: that's insane to have all nine at 24 years old.
[21:51] Speaker 1: It's a joke. Yeah.
[21:52] Speaker 2: The next favorite is Zverev at plus 900. That means
[21:56] Speaker 2: you put $ 100 in. If he wins, you get 900
[21:59] Speaker 2: in return. Like, that's such a difference.
[22:03] Speaker 1: Yeah, center dominance. I mean, we'll talk about it once
[22:07] Speaker 1: Rome ends, I'm sure. So stay tuned for that. But
[22:12] Speaker 1: let's talk a little bit more on the men's side.
[22:15] Speaker 1: Let's talk the American men. Again, not a great week.
[22:19] Speaker 1: They were not great in Madrid. Taylor Fritz is not
[22:24] Speaker 1: in Rome. He's been hanging out at the Renaissance Fair.
[22:26] Speaker 1: You guys see that?
[22:27] Speaker 3: Yes.
[22:28] Speaker 1: Yeah. What is that movie with the McLovin character? He
[22:31] Speaker 1: was like a– Superbad. No. No. It's not– It's like
[22:34] Speaker 1: The Pew Man.
[22:36] Speaker 3: Oh.
[22:36] Speaker 1: Oh. Okay.
[22:37] Speaker 3: I love you, man.
[22:37] Speaker 1: Now that Fritz.
[22:39] Speaker 2: Is single, he can do all these things he wants
[22:40] Speaker 2: to do, like hit the Renaissance Fair.
[22:42] Speaker 3: Yeah, he's a closet Renaissance fan. Now that he's got
[22:45] Speaker 3: the ability to go, he can go on a Saturday afternoon.
[22:47] Speaker 1: We can see the real Taylor Fritz. It is I
[22:49] Speaker 1: Love You, Man. You're right. That's a great movie, by
[22:51] Speaker 1: the way. Yeah, so that's where Fritz, obviously, he's recovering.
[22:55] Speaker 1: He's getting his body right. You don't think he miswrote
[22:57] Speaker 1: him for just the Renaissance Fair? I don't think he
[22:59] Speaker 1: miswrote him for the Renaissance Fair, but having said that,
[23:02] Speaker 1: the only American left is Lerner Tien, and he took
[23:04] Speaker 1: out the knight-seated Bublik 7-5 in the third so he's
[23:10] Speaker 1: into the round of 16 but Tommy Paul lost Francis
[23:12] Speaker 1: lost Ben Shelton lost early again I mean Ben Shelton
[23:16] Speaker 1: how about his last six tournaments he went Indian Wells
[23:22] Speaker 1: first round or first match loss Miami first match loss
[23:25] Speaker 1: Houston second match loss titles in Munich and then First
[23:30] Speaker 1: match loss, Madrid. First match loss.
[23:31] Speaker 2: Go back further than that. Wins Dallas, then lost loss.
[23:34] Speaker 1: Wins out. You're right. Wins music, lost Munich. Lost loss.
[23:37] Speaker 1: So he's got two 500s and an Aussie Open quarterfinals.
[23:41] Speaker 2: It's like the Felix question. Is Ben playing well right now?
[23:44] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[23:45] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[23:46] Speaker 1: No, the answer is no. He'll be fine. He will
[23:49] Speaker 1: be fine. We're not worried about it, but he's not
[23:51] Speaker 1: playing his best right now.
[23:53] Speaker 3: Like if you're him in this situation, do you come
[23:55] Speaker 3: home for two weeks? Do you play the 250 before
[23:57] Speaker 3: to get some matches? Because he's like a three out
[23:59] Speaker 3: of five specialist. Not in a bad way, but he's
[24:01] Speaker 3: so physically, he's a physical freak. And like, he doesn't
[24:05] Speaker 3: need the prep, right? He's so physically in such more
[24:09] Speaker 3: physical shape than everyone else. Like it seems like, like
[24:11] Speaker 3: the three out of five, he just kind of gets
[24:12] Speaker 3: his engines going. Like he's going to be fine. But
[24:15] Speaker 3: I don't see him playing before, but I don't know.
[24:17] Speaker 1: I mean, Interesting. Yeah, this is a good question. He's
[24:21] Speaker 1: either going to play the 250 or get back home
[24:23] Speaker 1: and then go back to RG because you can't just
[24:27] Speaker 1: hang out in Europe for 13 more days. We've got
[24:30] Speaker 1: to put air tags on these guys. Exactly. So we
[24:33] Speaker 1: can track them. We can find that out. We can
[24:34] Speaker 1: find that out. But back to Tian, he won 7-5
[24:37] Speaker 1: in the third. That sets up a blockbuster round of
[24:39] Speaker 1: 16 match for him. He plays... Rafa Hodar in the
[24:45] Speaker 1: round of 16. That is a big one. We've talked
[24:47] Speaker 1: about the great super young crop of players. Well, here's
[24:52] Speaker 1: two of them, and they're in the round of 16
[24:53] Speaker 1: playing each other in Rome. Who am I liking this one?
[24:56] Speaker 1: I like Hodar.
[24:58] Speaker 3: Just on clay.
[24:58] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[25:00] Speaker 3: I will say, though, I have been impressed with Lerner
[25:03] Speaker 3: this week. He didn't look comfortable in Houston, didn't look
[25:06] Speaker 3: comfortable in Madrid on the clay, and You know, he's
[25:08] Speaker 3: had a couple good wins in this week. So like
[25:10] Speaker 3: he's figuring it out week in and week out. And
[25:12] Speaker 3: that's what all you want to see out of a
[25:14] Speaker 3: young guy or especially out of a young American in
[25:17] Speaker 3: Europe during this stretch is to like just see little
[25:20] Speaker 3: baby steps of progress week in and week out. Because,
[25:23] Speaker 3: I mean, you guys know it. We all know it.
[25:24] Speaker 3: Like it's sometimes it's easy to get down in Rome,
[25:27] Speaker 3: like just mentally after, you know, you've lost in Madrid.
[25:30] Speaker 3: You've got another week here. Then you go play Geneva.
[25:32] Speaker 3: Like it's easy to get down on yourself in Rome.
[25:35] Speaker 3: And Lerner didn't do that. He kind of picked himself
[25:37] Speaker 3: up and has played a couple good matches and has
[25:40] Speaker 3: a chance to make a quarter, which is not something
[25:43] Speaker 3: any of us had this week.
[25:44] Speaker 1: This is a tough one. I like Hodar as well.
[25:46] Speaker 2: But I also feel like a little Hodar.
[25:49] Speaker 1: Just a down day is coming.
[25:50] Speaker 2: Just because he won the tournament before Madrid and the
[25:53] Speaker 2: run in Madrid, now playing well here. Eventually, he's going
[25:56] Speaker 2: to take the court because he's young.
[25:57] Speaker 1: He'll just be like, I'm just exhausted. He loses like
[26:00] Speaker 1: three and two.
[26:02] Speaker 3: That'll be next week in Geneva. He'll lose like, yeah,
[26:04] Speaker 3: two and two to somebody, some random.
[26:06] Speaker 1: He's not playing Geneva or anything. Yeah, but that's a
[26:10] Speaker 1: good one to look forward to for sure in the
[26:12] Speaker 1: round of 16. That is two super, both teenagers, right?
[26:16] Speaker 1: Or is Lerner still a teenager? Lerner might be 20.
[26:18] Speaker 3: Nope, he's 20.
[26:19] Speaker 1: He's way past his prime. Last thing on the men's side,
[26:23] Speaker 1: did you all see this Fonseca Medvedevich, I think, Hamad
[26:28] Speaker 1: Medvedevich match? The crowd was... the Brazilian crowd was like
[26:33] Speaker 1: out of control in this match. And to the point
[26:37] Speaker 1: where Fonseca, like it irked him and in his post-match,
[26:41] Speaker 1: he spoke about how he loves the passion of the
[26:44] Speaker 1: Brazilian fans, but they bring their energy into it. His,
[26:48] Speaker 1: one of his tennis matches, like they would a soccer match.
[26:51] Speaker 1: And he doesn't necessarily appreciate that. There's a little bit
[26:54] Speaker 1: of decorum that comes with watching tennis that he thinks
[26:58] Speaker 1: some of his fans don't bring to what do you
[27:01] Speaker 1: think about what he said? I'm totally paraphrasing there, but
[27:03] Speaker 1: I think that's what he.
[27:05] Speaker 3: That's crazy though. Like that takes a lot of like
[27:07] Speaker 3: gumption to come out and say that, especially for drought.
[27:11] Speaker 3: Like that's your home crowd. Like the people of Brazil,
[27:14] Speaker 3: like that's all they want to do is get behind
[27:16] Speaker 3: their man. And, but he is right to a certain degree.
[27:19] Speaker 3: Like it is tricky. It is not a soccer match,
[27:21] Speaker 3: a football match, as they would say.
[27:23] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[27:24] Speaker 3: Like it's great to cheer. It's great to get loud. Look,
[27:26] Speaker 3: I love the atmosphere, but it's gotta be hard on him.
[27:29] Speaker 3: Like I'm not in his shoes. So like, every match
[27:32] Speaker 3: is like the biggest match in Brazil, right? Like it's,
[27:35] Speaker 3: it's a crazy amount of pressure and a crazy amount of,
[27:39] Speaker 3: you know, just, I don't even know what to say
[27:42] Speaker 3: to like, to deal with that day in and day out.
[27:43] Speaker 3: I mean, in every city in the world, it's not
[27:46] Speaker 3: just in South America and he's playing the golden swing.
[27:48] Speaker 3: It's in Rome. Like it'll be at the French, it'll
[27:50] Speaker 3: be at Wimbledon. Like it's, it's wild. So it's, it's
[27:53] Speaker 3: gotta be hard, but like, it takes a lot for
[27:55] Speaker 3: him to come out and say that. And, you know,
[27:57] Speaker 3: sometimes it's, Yeah, it's got to be hard. I mean,
[28:01] Speaker 3: I never had that kind of crowd support anywhere in
[28:02] Speaker 3: the world. So like, I don't know what it feels like,
[28:04] Speaker 3: but it's got to be difficult for a young kid
[28:07] Speaker 3: to have that every match he plays for the, you know,
[28:10] Speaker 3: for the rest of his career, basically.
[28:11] Speaker 2: And he wants him to be like, there's still like
[28:13] Speaker 2: the respect thing. Like if your opponent double faults, misses
[28:16] Speaker 2: an easy shot, like he doesn't want him to go
[28:17] Speaker 2: crazy then because it reflects poorly on Joao. Joao's like
[28:21] Speaker 2: the nicest guy, as we know. So I think he
[28:24] Speaker 2: just wants them to cheer for him, but that doesn't,
[28:27] Speaker 2: cheering for Joao doesn't mean that you're also like cheering
[28:29] Speaker 2: for the opponent to lose.
[28:31] Speaker 1: Yeah, correct. You know, and so I love that he
[28:33] Speaker 1: said it. You don't want the whistling after a missed
[28:36] Speaker 1: first serve to, you know, distract the player from. Totally.
[28:40] Speaker 2: He doesn't want to be in the locker room and
[28:41] Speaker 2: not have guys like him because like this crowd is insane.
[28:44] Speaker 2: So good for him for saying something.
[28:45] Speaker 1: Yeah. Joao has this like crazy support on his side
[28:48] Speaker 1: coming from Brazil. Obviously we know how like how big
[28:50] Speaker 1: of a market it is, but it's easy to, I
[28:52] Speaker 1: think maybe for the rest of the world or Americans
[28:56] Speaker 1: to forget like how, just how big of a market
[29:00] Speaker 1: like Brazil is. I mean, there's like over 200 million
[29:03] Speaker 1: people in that country, right? There's 300 and something million
[29:05] Speaker 1: in the United States. I mean, it's ginormous. It was,
[29:08] Speaker 1: it was, it's as if there was only one tennis
[29:11] Speaker 1: player in all of the United States to get behind. Yeah, exactly.
[29:15] Speaker 2: He's got, yeah.
[29:17] Speaker 1: So, um, yeah. But Medvedevich took him out and kind
[29:22] Speaker 1: of silenced the crowd afterwards. He was like– he was cold. Yeah.
[29:26] Speaker 1: I love when you see that stuff. I liked it.
[29:28] Speaker 1: That guy Medvedevich has a lot of like character, not like–
[29:32] Speaker 1: he's not so like outgoing out there or like dramatic,
[29:37] Speaker 1: but he's like– he's he's, he's stone cold out there
[29:39] Speaker 1: on the floor. He's a bit crazy too.
[29:41] Speaker 3: He's not afraid to shatter a racket, you know, he's
[29:44] Speaker 3: got a little wild side to him.
[29:46] Speaker 2: Part of the big, big tummy club too with, um,
[29:50] Speaker 2: you know, he's, does it look like he would be
[29:53] Speaker 2: able to battle three hours?
[29:54] Speaker 1: It's a Serbian thing. It's a Serbian thing. Except for Novak.
[29:58] Speaker 1: Except for Novak. We'll spare Tyre down there.
[30:00] Speaker 2: And be good.
[30:02] Speaker 1: Yeah, he does have it. He's a thicker guy. Yeah.
[30:06] Speaker 1: That's just his body type. That's a nice way to
[30:07] Speaker 1: put it. Yeah, it's his body type for sure.
[30:08] Speaker 3: Guys, that's not a shame here, okay?
[30:10] Speaker 1: No, we're not shaming. I like watching the guy play. Anyways,
[30:14] Speaker 1: but that's it on the men's side. We will have more,
[30:19] Speaker 1: of course, from Rome on Friday. Hopefully in a few
[30:23] Speaker 1: weeks it'll be Thursday. But Friday coming up. Let's move
[30:29] Speaker 1: on to the women's side. There's one really big result,
[30:34] Speaker 1: and that's Sabalenka going out. I mean, you're just so
[30:38] Speaker 1: accustomed to her just going deep every single week. She
[30:41] Speaker 1: doesn't win in Madrid, and she lost to the 36-year-old Kristea,
[30:49] Speaker 1: who has said that this is her last year on tour.
[30:52] Speaker 1: That was 7-5 in the third round. Sabalenka, guys, what
[30:58] Speaker 1: do we think about this result? Is this a cause
[31:02] Speaker 1: for concern at all ahead of Roland Garros or not really?
[31:07] Speaker 2: I don't think so. She's still going to be the
[31:08] Speaker 2: favorite at Roland Garros. I think because there's not like
[31:12] Speaker 2: another female player that's been like dominating who's won like
[31:16] Speaker 2: Stuttgart and then won Madrid and looks like they're like
[31:19] Speaker 2: dominating to overtake her. Like Rabat can a lot. Last
[31:22] Speaker 2: week in Madrid, you had four women in the semifinals
[31:24] Speaker 2: that were outside of.
[31:25] Speaker 1: Like 20 in the world.
[31:28] Speaker 2: This year, or this week in Rome, Coco Gaustil cruising along, Pugula,
[31:33] Speaker 2: some of the other top women. But Sabalega is still,
[31:36] Speaker 2: I believe, going to be the favorite once Roland Garros hits.
[31:39] Speaker 2: But she can't be feeling great. We're not used to,
[31:42] Speaker 2: after winning the Sunshine Double and then coming to Madrid
[31:45] Speaker 2: and Rome and losing early in Madrid for her standards now,
[31:49] Speaker 2: really early in Rome.
[31:50] Speaker 1: A little surprising.
[31:52] Speaker 3: Yeah, but still, like, same, I mean, in a different area,
[31:56] Speaker 3: but For her and Novak, she hasn't proven that she's
[32:00] Speaker 3: going to lose early at any slam and any time recently.
[32:03] Speaker 3: So why would you expect anything else than a deep
[32:05] Speaker 3: run for her to French? Like she wasn't feeling great.
[32:07] Speaker 3: A hundred percent. She now has two and a half
[32:09] Speaker 3: weeks to get right. Like she's going to be just fine.
[32:12] Speaker 1: She's going to.
[32:13] Speaker 3: Go through the first week, and then it's going to
[32:14] Speaker 3: get to the back end of week two, and she's
[32:16] Speaker 3: then going to be competing for another Grand Slam title.
[32:19] Speaker 3: So I think zero cause for concern. Maybe I just
[32:22] Speaker 3: don't believe in injuries, actually.
[32:23] Speaker 1: Yeah, maybe you don't. But she actually was limited.
[32:27] Speaker 3: But right, like, I mean, until she proves that she's
[32:28] Speaker 3: not going to make the semis or a final of
[32:30] Speaker 3: a slam, like, why would you assume otherwise?
[32:32] Speaker 1: Of course. But she was limited in her post-match press.
[32:35] Speaker 1: She said her lower back was bothering her, something maybe
[32:37] Speaker 1: connected to the hip.
[32:39] Speaker 3: Probably the twin king beds.
[32:41] Speaker 1: Sorry?
[32:42] Speaker 3: The twin king beds that they're providing in Rome.
[32:44] Speaker 1: Probably. She probably had just a super soft.
[32:48] Speaker 3: She probably fell between the cracks as she was moving around.
[32:51] Speaker 1: She might have fell between the cracks, exactly. It's a
[32:53] Speaker 1: real thing. It is a real thing. Some bad pillows
[32:56] Speaker 1: over there, too. Yes.
[32:59] Speaker 3: Should we get into it?
[33:02] Speaker 1: No, it could be a pet peeve. But yeah, I
[33:05] Speaker 1: think with Sabalenka going out, Rabakina has a real chance...
[33:12] Speaker 1: with a run here to– and then going forward with
[33:19] Speaker 1: everything Sabalenka has to defend to get to number one
[33:22] Speaker 1: in the world. So that's something to watch for on
[33:25] Speaker 1: the women's side is that battle for number one between
[33:27] Speaker 1: those two players, Rabakina and Sabalenka.
[33:30] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's something we'll definitely be monitoring that in the
[33:33] Speaker 2: coming weeks and let everyone know.
[33:36] Speaker 3: Yeah, but it's Sabalenka. We all know she's going to
[33:38] Speaker 3: be the favorite at the French– And, you know, she's
[33:41] Speaker 3: one of the most fashionable people on tour. And that's
[33:43] Speaker 3: never going to change.
[33:44] Speaker 1: Well, us here at Nothing Major, we're trying to be
[33:46] Speaker 1: a little more intentional about what we wear day to day.
[33:49] Speaker 1: Try to lean into pieces that are easy, comfortable, and
[33:52] Speaker 1: still look put together. That's why we keep going back
[33:55] Speaker 1: to quints. Sam, I know you really love quints. Like,
[34:01] Speaker 1: really love them. You love how everything looks. It's clean.
[34:05] Speaker 1: It's elevated. You know, everything just kind of works without–
[34:09] Speaker 1: overthinking it it's just very very smooth.
[34:11] Speaker 3: And quince has whatever you need in the wardrobe i've
[34:14] Speaker 3: got a bunch i've got the pants i've got the
[34:15] Speaker 3: shorts the 100 european european linen shorts and shirts they're
[34:19] Speaker 3: at 34 bucks it's a great price and a great product.
[34:22] Speaker 2: Lightweight breathable really comfortable still polished enough to wear them
[34:26] Speaker 2: to like a nice event or a casual event it's
[34:29] Speaker 2: also 100 pima cotton i don't know what that is
[34:33] Speaker 2: but it sounds so nice it's these nice t's Feels
[34:36] Speaker 2: like silk butter on your body.
[34:37] Speaker 1: So check them out. And they work on like any occasion.
[34:40] Speaker 1: Like yes, just going out to a casual dinner with
[34:43] Speaker 1: your friends or you can wear the pants with a
[34:46] Speaker 1: nice blazer as well. Like they're very comfortable and they
[34:50] Speaker 1: work at every single occasion.
[34:51] Speaker 3: Yeah, I've worn the pants many times on Tennis Channel.
[34:54] Speaker 3: Too bad you can't really see it while I'm sitting
[34:55] Speaker 3: down at the desk. And everything is, you know, 50
[34:59] Speaker 3: to 80% off or compared to similar brands.
[35:01] Speaker 2: I have like four shirts that I wear in rotation.
[35:04] Speaker 2: I have five now. I throw in the Kintz shirt
[35:07] Speaker 2: in the rotation now. It's that nice. It looks that good.
[35:09] Speaker 2: My wife likes it. I like it. And it's in
[35:14] Speaker 2: the rotation now.

[35:29] Speaker 3: dot com slash nothing major for free shipping and 365-day returns.
[35:33] Speaker 3: Quince dot com slash nothing major.
[35:35] Speaker 1: All right. Well, thank you to our friends at Quince.
[35:38] Speaker 1: Fantastic product. Let's move on, though, to major news. We
[35:42] Speaker 1: spoke about this a couple weeks ago. Holger Rune announced
[35:46] Speaker 1: that he was going to come back and play Hamburg.
[35:49] Speaker 1: And we all said that's insane. Maybe he listened to
[35:52] Speaker 1: the pod because he's now pulled out of Hamburg, said
[35:55] Speaker 1: he needs a little more time. Pulled out of Roland
[35:58] Speaker 1: Garros too. Yeah, pulled out of Roland Garros, pulled out
[36:00] Speaker 1: of Hamburg. He's not quite ready to compete at the
[36:03] Speaker 1: highest level. We think that's smart. It'd be insane to
[36:08] Speaker 1: come back this quickly from that. I know he wants
[36:11] Speaker 1: to prove a lot of people wrong, but at a
[36:12] Speaker 1: certain point you got to. Just really, really take your
[36:15] Speaker 1: time with an injury that's this severe.
[36:18] Speaker 3: I'm all good about doing things out of spite and
[36:20] Speaker 3: proving people wrong. But this seems like it could be
[36:22] Speaker 3: detrimental to his long term for a young guy who's
[36:25] Speaker 3: a pretty damn good tennis player.
[36:27] Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. So, yeah. So, Holger, hopefully get well after RG.
[36:32] Speaker 1: Maybe we'll see you on the grass. Maybe we'll see
[36:34] Speaker 1: you on the grass. Would be awesome. But some of
[36:38] Speaker 1: the biggest news. I think in the tennis world, the
[36:42] Speaker 1: casual fan might not have heard this or seen this.
[36:48] Speaker 1: There's some rumblings of– I think Sabalinka might have said something–
[36:54] Speaker 1: of players considering a Grand Slam boycott. I mean, when
[37:00] Speaker 1: you look at the revenue numbers that the players– percentage
[37:04] Speaker 1: of revenue numbers that the players are getting– at Roland
[37:07] Speaker 1: Garros specifically and compare it to other sports, team sports, leagues.
[37:16] Speaker 1: You look at the graphic, if we could show the
[37:18] Speaker 1: graphic up here, I mean, it just immediately jumps out
[37:20] Speaker 1: at you. It's crazy. Sam, you said the NBA, the NHL,
[37:25] Speaker 1: Major League Baseball, NFL, they're all at that 50% level.
[37:29] Speaker 1: At Roland Garros, it's 14.9% percentage of revenue that the
[37:33] Speaker 1: players are getting.
[37:36] Speaker 2: Yeah, it's an embarrassing number. Bottom line, I don't want
[37:42] Speaker 2: to talk about this for 20 minutes, but if the
[37:44] Speaker 2: players aren't all aligned together, nothing's going to happen. They've
[37:48] Speaker 2: got to get every player 1-100, 1-200, and they've all
[37:51] Speaker 2: got to get on the same page and be like,
[37:53] Speaker 2: we're not going to play Roland Garros or whatever tournament
[37:55] Speaker 2: if they want to see change. In my opinion, it
[37:57] Speaker 2: can't just be the top players.
[37:59] Speaker 1: I disagree. I think it can't be the top players.
[38:01] Speaker 1: I think all you need is the top players. I
[38:04] Speaker 1: think it's got to be everyone.
[38:06] Speaker 2: It should be everyone, but it should be everyone.
[38:08] Speaker 1: It should be everyone. It is everyone. Correct. It can't be.
[38:12] Speaker 2: What happens to this 14.9% of revenue? The tournament brings in,
[38:17] Speaker 2: I'm making up numbers, $ 500 million. They might go take
[38:20] Speaker 2: a portion of that $ 500 million and go build a
[38:22] Speaker 2: new stadium or do an upgrade. So then they say, no,
[38:25] Speaker 2: we only made $ 300 million because we spent $ 200 million
[38:29] Speaker 2: on these upgrades. No, you made 500. So then it
[38:33] Speaker 2: pulls down to 300 million. No, it's got to be
[38:35] Speaker 2: everything that comes in. That is the revenue. Then split it.
[38:38] Speaker 2: It's not the revenue after. It's not revenue after expenses
[38:42] Speaker 2: and after upgrades.
[38:44] Speaker 1: Correct. Well, there's obviously a lot of expenses, of course,
[38:46] Speaker 1: that goes along with the events. So that's what it
[38:50] Speaker 1: should be. It should be revenue. Like revenue minus expenses. Not,
[38:53] Speaker 1: all right, we're building a brand new bullring court or
[38:56] Speaker 1: whatever it may be. That costs 80 million euros. Yeah.
[38:58] Speaker 1: That comes out of what the players. Or the slams.
[39:02] Speaker 2: They contribute nothing to the pension either. They should pay
[39:04] Speaker 2: to the pension of the players at minimum.
[39:07] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[39:08] Speaker 3: I mean, tennis is complicated. This is a much longer
[39:11] Speaker 3: discussion than what we're going to have right now. But
[39:13] Speaker 3: tennis is fragmented. The ITFs, the slams, they're all in
[39:15] Speaker 3: their own world. The other tournaments, if you look at
[39:17] Speaker 3: the 250s on the men's side, for example, we are
[39:20] Speaker 3: getting a much larger share than 50% of the prize money.
[39:24] Speaker 1: Right?
[39:24] Speaker 3: Because they're not making that much money, I don't think.
[39:27] Speaker 3: You're talking about the revenue Revenue, excuse me. Yeah, so
[39:31] Speaker 3: the split isn't 50-50. But that being said, just kind
[39:34] Speaker 3: of in other sports, right? You might see a major
[39:37] Speaker 3: four sports say, oh, we've lost money this year. It's like, sure.
[39:41] Speaker 3: But the value of your team, your event, whatever, goes
[39:44] Speaker 3: up exponentially every year. So if you really don't like that,
[39:47] Speaker 3: then sell your tournament at a massive profit. It goes
[39:51] Speaker 3: both ways. This is a bad number on the graphics
[39:54] Speaker 3: card for the French Open, for any slam for that matter.
[39:56] Speaker 3: The other slams aren't that much different. They're not close
[40:00] Speaker 3: to 50-50 either.
[40:00] Speaker 1: Not even....
[40:02] Speaker 3: You know, they're closer to this number than they would
[40:03] Speaker 3: be the other major four sports.
[40:06] Speaker 2: And I hate the argument like, oh, whoever wins it
[40:08] Speaker 2: gets $ 3 million or $ 4 million. You can win that
[40:12] Speaker 2: and still be underpaid. We're not saying that is not
[40:14] Speaker 2: a ton of money. That is a ton of money.
[40:16] Speaker 1: You could win.
[40:17] Speaker 2: You could make $ 10 million and be underpaid. Like these
[40:21] Speaker 2: basketball players sign a three-year $ 62 million contract. Everyone's like
[40:25] Speaker 2: pumped up. In tennis, for whatever reason, it's the opposite. Oh,
[40:28] Speaker 2: center and sub blanket. Well, they just made $ 3. 5 million.
[40:30] Speaker 2: What are they complaining about?
[40:32] Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, no, you're right. I don't understand it.
[40:35] Speaker 3: But I'm with John on this one. I guess if
[40:37] Speaker 3: it's the top guys that do it, like if they watched–
[40:40] Speaker 3: you go back eight years, they watched Aquarius in their
[40:42] Speaker 3: final at the French.
[40:45] Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly.
[40:46] Speaker 3: They're increasing the prize money. Because shot ratings are going
[40:49] Speaker 3: to be rough.
[40:50] Speaker 1: Yeah. If it's Stevie J.
[40:52] Speaker 3: You need the best guys, the top women to like
[40:56] Speaker 3: all be in unison, which is extremely, extremely difficult.
[40:59] Speaker 1: And Sinner said that the top men and the top,
[41:02] Speaker 1: the top 10 men and the top 10 women all
[41:04] Speaker 1: got together and wrote a letter. And they said, after
[41:07] Speaker 1: one year, we are not close to a conclusion that
[41:09] Speaker 1: we would like to reach.
[41:10] Speaker 2: So, Don't write a letter.
[41:12] Speaker 1: Do something. A letter? Yeah, but that is something. That
[41:15] Speaker 1: is something. To get all of them together, get 20 players,
[41:19] Speaker 1: the top 10 on each side.
[41:19] Speaker 3: I was surprised when I saw that across my timeline,
[41:21] Speaker 3: you know, in a Forbes article. I was surprised. So,
[41:24] Speaker 3: which is good, right? I mean.
[41:25] Speaker 1: Yeah. So, Djokovic, who has been at the forefront of
[41:31] Speaker 1: a lot of these players slash tournament issues, has not
[41:37] Speaker 1: been involved in this current player, what have you, He's
[41:41] Speaker 1: probably exhausted. He tried to for the last eight years. Exactly.
[41:44] Speaker 1: He's probably exhausted. Tennis is fragmented. There's a lot of
[41:48] Speaker 1: different power players in the sport. So this is something
[41:53] Speaker 1: to look out for because this is huge. We've seen
[41:56] Speaker 1: leagues in the past that have had lockouts. I'm not
[42:00] Speaker 1: saying it's going to get to that, but this is
[42:03] Speaker 1: definitely something to keep an eye on for tennis fans everywhere.
[42:07] Speaker 1: It'll be very interesting to see where this goes for sure.
[42:10] Speaker 3: Yeah, and we, you know, look, when the French Open
[42:13] Speaker 3: rolls around, we're going to have some players out there.
[42:15] Speaker 3: Some are going to get angry. Some are going to
[42:17] Speaker 3: break rackets, but that's probably because they're malnutritioned out there,
[42:20] Speaker 3: but not with IQ Bar, okay? We don't want to
[42:22] Speaker 3: see any more tennis crash outs, and I think a
[42:24] Speaker 3: lot of the players can resolve that problem by having
[42:26] Speaker 3: a nice IQ Bar.
[42:27] Speaker 2: Yeah, if those players had an IQ Bar, which is
[42:29] Speaker 2: our exclusive snack, hydration, and coffee sponsor, maybe they wouldn't
[42:33] Speaker 2: have crashed out on the court.
[42:34] Speaker 1: Yes, IQ Bar, they have Protein bars, they have the
[42:37] Speaker 1: IQ Mix Hydration and the IQ Joe Mushroom Coffees. I
[42:41] Speaker 1: got to be honest, I have not had the mushroom coffees,

[43:57] Speaker 1: thank you, guys. Thank you.
[43:58] Speaker 3: All right, let's move on.
[44:00] Speaker 1: Major opinions, and we're going to start off with Stevie's stats.
[44:04] Speaker 1: She's got a good one for us right here. Oh, boy.
[44:06] Speaker 3: It's a great stat, but not if you're Adrian Manorino.
[44:10] Speaker 3: In the last seven years... At Masters 1000s events and
[44:14] Speaker 3: Grand Slams, he is 0-24. 0-24 in qualifying in main
[44:22] Speaker 3: draw matches at Masters Series and Slams on the dirt.
[44:25] Speaker 3: We all know he's maybe not a clay guy, but
[44:28] Speaker 3: this is really not a clay guy.
[44:30] Speaker 1: That's nuts. It's actually getting to the point. That's hard
[44:33] Speaker 1: to do. If you draw him at Roland Garros... You
[44:36] Speaker 1: got to be so tight. All the pressure in the
[44:38] Speaker 1: world is on you because this guy cannot win a
[44:39] Speaker 1: match on clay. He does really dislike that service. Stevie,
[44:42] Speaker 1: you played him at RGF.
[44:43] Speaker 3: I played him at Roland Garros, yeah. Yeah, it was
[44:46] Speaker 3: pretty straightforward. I also had a really good record against
[44:48] Speaker 3: him at the time, but.
[44:49] Speaker 2: Be crazy if he breaks the streak beating like Mussetti
[44:52] Speaker 2: at Roland Garros or something.
[44:53] Speaker 3: Yeah, he beats Sinner. I bet he beats Sinner like
[44:55] Speaker 3: third round.
[44:55] Speaker 1: Yeah, he beats Sinner. 2-2-2.
[44:56] Speaker 3: There you go. And just grosses him out. That little
[44:58] Speaker 3: shovel backhand.
[44:59] Speaker 1: But he's one of those guys that's like, obviously he's always,
[45:02] Speaker 1: it seems like he's been 50 in the world forever.
[45:04] Speaker 1: And you look at his record, he never has a
[45:06] Speaker 1: winning record. Ever. Never. He has a career way below. 500,
[45:10] Speaker 1: but he has wins in spurts, and that's kind of
[45:13] Speaker 1: what you need to keep your ranking up.
[45:14] Speaker 3: He needs to do well in the grass is what
[45:15] Speaker 3: he needs to do.
[45:16] Speaker 1: Yeah, but you say that, and then he'll do well.
[45:20] Speaker 1: He'll make a final of one of those indoor. 250s
[45:23] Speaker 1: at the end of the year, and he'll be at
[45:25] Speaker 1: Melbourne come the beginning of the year. All right, my
[45:29] Speaker 1: Surbot of the Week. I'm going to the women's side.
[45:31] Speaker 1: Don't do this too often, and I'm going to our
[45:34] Speaker 1: good friend Jess Pagula. She won 0-0 over Rebecca Massarova,
[45:39] Speaker 1: and she lost just seven points on her serve. 0-0.
[45:44] Speaker 1: That was quite a good performance. I can't imagine winning 0-0.
[45:47] Speaker 1: I don't think I've ever won 0-0 in my life.
[45:52] Speaker 1: But it's actually just the first 0-0 she's recorded. That's
[45:56] Speaker 1: a little surprising. That is surprising. I feel like she
[45:58] Speaker 1: would have like three or four of those. But congrats, Jess.
[46:01] Speaker 1: You are my serve bond of the week. You're going
[46:03] Speaker 1: to ask me what my query is? Or do you
[46:04] Speaker 1: want me to just get into it? Oh, yeah. Sorry.
[46:06] Speaker 1: Good point. Go ahead. That was a mean question. Sorry.
[46:10] Speaker 1: That's on me. It's a bad, bad host here. Sam,
[46:12] Speaker 1: your query.
[46:13] Speaker 2: My query is, last Friday we had Adam Lefkoe on
[46:16] Speaker 2: the pod. I'm all up in the YouTube comments, by
[46:19] Speaker 2: the way. The Lefkoe hate pissed me off.
[46:22] Speaker 1: Yeah, that's crazy. It's not.
[46:24] Speaker 2: Well, he mispronounced the names at Roland Garros last year.
[46:28] Speaker 2: Why is it that tennis fans, not all of them,
[46:30] Speaker 2: I'm singling out a small group, why do they get
[46:33] Speaker 2: so offended when you like mispronounce a name slightly? I
[46:36] Speaker 2: know I'm the worst culprit of it, but like these
[46:39] Speaker 2: are international names are from Eastern Europe. They're from China.
[46:42] Speaker 2: They're very difficult to pronounce. And if you mispronounce a
[46:45] Speaker 2: name in tennis, the, the, the fans are just like,
[46:48] Speaker 2: I'm not trying to TV off.
[46:49] Speaker 1: I might get all met. Why is that?
[46:51] Speaker 3: I will not stand for left coast Lander on this.
[46:55] Speaker 1: So good. So talented.
[46:57] Speaker 2: It would, if you just listen to, if you'd never
[46:58] Speaker 2: heard of the guy and you listened to the interview
[47:00] Speaker 2: last Friday, you would have, You would have been just
[47:03] Speaker 2: entranced in it for 45 minutes.
[47:05] Speaker 1: Yeah. He is so talented. His voice, his cadence, everything
[47:09] Speaker 1: about Adam Lefkoe is perfect. He was built to do
[47:12] Speaker 1: what he's doing.
[47:12] Speaker 2: Do tennis fans get so offended if you mispronounce an
[47:16] Speaker 2: Eastern European tennis name?
[47:18] Speaker 3: The internet is built for people to just hate.
[47:20] Speaker 1: Or is it just the internet? It's because they're commonplace
[47:22] Speaker 1: for us. Yeah. Yeah. it's the internet yeah they like
[47:25] Speaker 1: that you know the majority as you know the people
[47:28] Speaker 1: that are the loudest and typing or they're the haters
[47:31] Speaker 1: so i i think i.
[47:32] Speaker 2: Know this is on the internet i hate us we're
[47:35] Speaker 2: on the internet right now.
[47:36] Speaker 1: Most of the people that i love our content they're
[47:38] Speaker 1: just hearting it you know they're not commenting on it.
[47:40] Speaker 2: Yeah i know but man the lefkoe hate.
[47:43] Speaker 3: Just pissed me off could this be anything related to
[47:47] Speaker 3: the amount of talk that we've been asking people about
[47:50] Speaker 3: cooking the books and other podcasts, getting back at us.
[47:53] Speaker 1: Ooh, I don't think so. Yeah, rival pod fans coming
[47:55] Speaker 1: on to our.
[47:56] Speaker 3: The books are not even only being cooked elsewhere. They're
[47:59] Speaker 3: being cooked here.
[48:00] Speaker 1: It's not.
[48:01] Speaker 3: You know?
[48:02] Speaker 1: Podcast wars. Yeah.
[48:04] Speaker 3: Something to think about. Something to think about.
[48:06] Speaker 1: No.
[48:07] Speaker 2: Anyway, I guess that's... We didn't really answer my question,
[48:09] Speaker 2: but that's my question.
[48:11] Speaker 1: Yeah, you take offense to the... YouTube comments that aren't–
[48:15] Speaker 1: I got to stop reading them.
[48:16] Speaker 3: If you're going to throw offense at YouTube comments, throw
[48:19] Speaker 3: it at Sam. Don't throw it at Adam Lefkoe. Don't
[48:22] Speaker 3: throw it at any of our guests. Throw it at Sam.
[48:23] Speaker 2: He's the man.
[48:24] Speaker 1: He's the man. Anyway. Sam and I are going to
[48:26] Speaker 1: be on the desk with him for two weeks. I know.
[48:29] Speaker 1: I'm so excited for you guys. And all you people
[48:32] Speaker 1: are like, oh, Lefkoe's on the desk. I'm going to
[48:34] Speaker 1: turn it off. No, you're not. No, you're not. He's awesome. No,
[48:36] Speaker 1: you're not. You don't have to be a tennis wiper
[48:39] Speaker 1: to be– I mean, he's a host. He's dishing it around, right?
[48:44] Speaker 1: Like that's what he's like.
[48:45] Speaker 3: He's the John Stockton, you know, like he's.
[48:47] Speaker 1: Just John Stockton. He's got 20 assistant on TNT. So he's,
[48:51] Speaker 1: he's money. Um, and the RG coverage is going to
[48:54] Speaker 1: be great with him. But yeah, thanks to Adam Lefkoe
[48:57] Speaker 1: for coming on, um, the pod. I think that's, uh,
