[0:07] SPEAKER_01: July 24, 2026.
[0:10] SPEAKER_01: Tony Rahm and Brad Plumer of the New York Times reported this afternoon that
[0:14] SPEAKER_01: the Trump administration's claim last October that it was cutting programs in order
[0:19] SPEAKER_01: to protect taxpayers against waste was, in fact, a lie.
[0:25] SPEAKER_01: In court filings,
[0:26] SPEAKER_01: federal officials admitted that the $7.5 billion in cuts
[0:30] SPEAKER_01: from clean energy projects begun under former President Joe Biden were...
[0:35] SPEAKER_01: Based solely on whether states had voted for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in
[0:41] SPEAKER_01: the 2024 presidential election.
[0:44] SPEAKER_01: Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vogt announced the cuts
[0:48] SPEAKER_01: by saying nearly $8 billion in Green New Scam funding to fuel
[0:54] SPEAKER_01: the left's climate agenda is being canceled.
[0:58] SPEAKER_01: But, in fact,
[1:00] SPEAKER_01: a government lawyer told the court that none of the cancellations were based
[1:04] SPEAKER_01: on any programmatic, statutory, cost reduction, or performance-based factor.
[1:12] SPEAKER_01: In contrast,
[1:13] SPEAKER_01: the administration funded grants for states that had backed Trump in 2024,
[1:19] SPEAKER_01: even though the Energy Department had recommended they be canceled.
[1:24] SPEAKER_01: The admission calls into question the administration's claims that it is making cuts
[1:29] SPEAKER_01: to combat waste, fraud,
[1:31] SPEAKER_01: and abuse,
[1:32] SPEAKER_01: especially as Vogt is working to finalize rules that would make political appointees
[1:37] SPEAKER_01: the final arbiters of how the government would award more than $1 trillion
[1:42] SPEAKER_01: in annual grants.
[1:45] SPEAKER_01: Rather than combating waste,
[1:46] SPEAKER_01: it appears Trump and his cronies are trying to take control of the U.S.
[1:50] SPEAKER_01: government, using the power of the American people for their own ends.
[1:56] SPEAKER_01: Illinois Governor J.B.
[1:57] SPEAKER_01: Pritzker promptly pointed out that
[1:59] SPEAKER_01: the canceled grants included $583 million intended for Illinois that would have gone
[2:07] SPEAKER_01: toward lowering energy costs,
[2:09] SPEAKER_01: strengthening grid reliability, and creating energy jobs.
[2:13] SPEAKER_01: He demanded the funds be restored.
[2:16] SPEAKER_01: Despite what he might think,
[2:18] SPEAKER_01: Donald Trump is not the president of MAGA,
[2:21] SPEAKER_01: Pritzker said in a statement, but the president of All America.
[2:26] SPEAKER_01: He must release remaining federal grants to Illinois immediately.
[2:32] SPEAKER_01: Pritzker can add the energy grants to Trump's tab.
[2:36] SPEAKER_01: After the Supreme Court declared Trump's April 2025 tariffs unconstitutional
[2:42] SPEAKER_01: in February 2026,
[2:44] SPEAKER_01: Pritzker wrote a public letter billing Trump for an $8.68 billion refund to
[2:50] SPEAKER_01: the people of Illinois.
[2:52] SPEAKER_01: Your tariff taxes wreaked havoc on farmers,
[2:56] SPEAKER_01: enraged our allies, and sent grocery prices through the roof, he wrote.
[3:02] SPEAKER_01: On behalf of the people of Illinois, I demand a refund of $1,700 for every family in Illinois.
[3:07] SPEAKER_01: There are 5,105,448 households in my state,
[3:09] SPEAKER_01: bringing the total damages you owe to $8,679,261,600.
[3:28] SPEAKER_01: Prisker reiterated that demand on July 20th.
[3:33] SPEAKER_01: But Trump is clinging to his determination to surround the United States with a tariff wall.
[3:39] SPEAKER_01: At 12.01 this morning,
[3:40] SPEAKER_01: Trump levied tariffs from 10% to 12.5% on goods from more than 80 countries
[3:47] SPEAKER_01: that make up 99.4% of U.S.
[3:50] SPEAKER_01: trade, claiming the countries are producing goods with forced labor.
[3:55] SPEAKER_01: More likely,
[3:56] SPEAKER_01: this argument justifies tariffs under a different law than the one that led
[4:01] SPEAKER_01: the Supreme Court to strike down his 2025 Liberation Day tariffs.
[4:07] SPEAKER_01: It's also a different law than the one he used to impose tariffs after
[4:10] SPEAKER_01: the Supreme Court decision.
[4:13] SPEAKER_01: The time limit permitted for new tariffs under that law expired today.
[4:18] SPEAKER_01: Kevin Bruninger of CNBC reported that within hours of the announcement of
[4:23] SPEAKER_01: the new tariffs,
[4:24] SPEAKER_01: two small businesses sued in the U.S.
[4:27] SPEAKER_01: Court of International Trade,
[4:29] SPEAKER_01: saying the new tariffs were just a way to reinstate the tariff levies
[4:33] SPEAKER_01: the Supreme Court said were unconstitutional.
[4:37] SPEAKER_01: A senior administration official told reporters that the tariffs were not an attempt
[4:41] SPEAKER_01: to recreate the previous system and that dealing with the issue
[4:45] SPEAKER_01: of forced labor is something that President Trump has been focused on
[4:49] SPEAKER_01: for many years.
[4:52] SPEAKER_01: Annie Linsky and Josh Dossie of The Wall Street Journal reported today
[4:57] SPEAKER_01: that Trump is angry and frustrated over the Iran war from which he cannot seem
[5:01] SPEAKER_01: to find an exit.
[5:04] SPEAKER_01: They wrote that some of Trump's advisors are worried at what the war is doing
[5:07] SPEAKER_01: to his popularity by causing higher prices as well as the deaths
[5:11] SPEAKER_01: of 18 service members.
[5:14] SPEAKER_01: That concern is likely behind the change in the number of U.S.
[5:18] SPEAKER_01: military personnel listed on a Pentagon website as killed in the Iran conflict.
[5:26] SPEAKER_01: Helene Cooper,
[5:27] SPEAKER_01: Lara Jakes,
[5:28] SPEAKER_01: and John Ismay of the New York Times reported yesterday that
[5:32] SPEAKER_01: the Pentagon has dropped the names of the four Americans killed in Jordan and Iraq,
[5:38] SPEAKER_01: reducing the number of U.S. personnel killed in the conflict to 14.
[5:44] SPEAKER_01: Three military officials told the reporters that the number was revised because
[5:49] SPEAKER_01: the four were killed after Trump announced the ceasefire in April.
[5:54] SPEAKER_01: The acting press secretary for the Pentagon,
[5:56] SPEAKER_01: Joel Valdez, said the four were dropped owing to temporary data disruptions.
[6:02] SPEAKER_01: But claiming the four died after a ceasefire bolsters
[6:06] SPEAKER_01: the administration's insistence that the president doesn't need
[6:09] SPEAKER_01: to get congressional approval for continuing operations against Iran because
[6:14] SPEAKER_01: the April ceasefire declaration ended the first operation.
[6:20] SPEAKER_01: The record of the Trump administration on July 24,
[6:24] SPEAKER_01: 2026, shows a White House focused on the goals of Trump alone.
[6:29] SPEAKER_01: It's a striking contrast to a fireside chat broadcast over the radio on July 24, 1933.
[6:37] SPEAKER_01: In that talk,
[6:38] SPEAKER_01: President Franklin Delano Roosevelt took stock of what he had accomplished
[6:42] SPEAKER_01: in his first 100 days in office.
[6:46] SPEAKER_01: He explained that his administration had stabilized the nation's banks
[6:50] SPEAKER_01: and raised taxes to pay for millions in borrowing.
[6:54] SPEAKER_01: That federal money was feeding starving people,
[6:57] SPEAKER_01: as well as employing 300,000 young men to work in the Civilian Conservation Corps,
[7:03] SPEAKER_01: planting trees to prevent soil erosion,
[7:05] SPEAKER_01: building levees and dams for flood control, and maintaining forest roads and trails.
[7:12] SPEAKER_01: FDR urged Americans to get behind a program of shorter hours and higher wages
[7:15] SPEAKER_01: to create purchasing power that would restart the economy.
[7:18] SPEAKER_01: He explained,
[7:42] SPEAKER_01: It goes back to the basic idea of society and of the nation itself,
[7:48] SPEAKER_01: that people acting in a group can accomplish things which no individual,
[7:53] SPEAKER_01: acting alone, could even hope to bring about.
[8:03] SPEAKER_00: Letters from an American was written and read by Heather Cox Richardson.
[8:07] SPEAKER_00: It was produced at Soundscape Productions, Dedham, Massachusetts.
[8:11] SPEAKER_00: Recorded with music composed by Michael Moss.
