[0:06] SPEAKER_01: August 8, 2026.
[0:09] SPEAKER_01: At 4 o'clock this morning,
[0:11] SPEAKER_01: just before they left for a five-week recess,
[0:14] SPEAKER_01: Senate Republicans confirmed Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche to the position
[0:20] SPEAKER_01: of Attorney General of the United States.
[0:23] SPEAKER_01: This makes President Donald J.
[0:25] SPEAKER_01: Trump's personal criminal lawyer the top law enforcement officer of the country.
[0:32] SPEAKER_01: The Attorney General is supposed to be the lawyer for the people of the United States.
[0:38] SPEAKER_01: Some Republicans,
[0:39] SPEAKER_01: like 92-year-old Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Chuck Grassley of Iowa,
[0:44] SPEAKER_01: were enthusiastic about Blanche.
[0:46] SPEAKER_01: Mr. Blanche is a tough,
[0:48] SPEAKER_01: fair prosecutor dedicated to the rule of law,
[0:52] SPEAKER_01: and his leadership instills that same zeal throughout the entire Justice Department,
[0:58] SPEAKER_01: Grassley said.
[1:00] SPEAKER_01: Other Republicans were more skeptical,
[1:02] SPEAKER_01: but said if they didn't confirm Blanche, Trump would choose someone worse.
[1:07] SPEAKER_01: Perhaps in a permanent rather than an acting capacity,
[1:11] SPEAKER_01: they said, he would be more likely to resist Trump's pressure.
[1:16] SPEAKER_01: Republican senators played a very different role in the United States 52 years ago.
[1:23] SPEAKER_01: In late July 1974,
[1:25] SPEAKER_01: the House Committee on the Judiciary had passed three articles of impeachment,
[1:31] SPEAKER_01: charging the president with obstruction of justice,
[1:34] SPEAKER_01: abuse of power,
[1:35] SPEAKER_01: and contempt of Congress over his handling of the break-in at
[1:39] SPEAKER_01: the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate Complex
[1:43] SPEAKER_01: in Washington, D.C.
[1:45] SPEAKER_01: The House would almost certainly send those articles of impeachment to the Senate,
[1:50] SPEAKER_01: but what would happen there was not clear.
[1:54] SPEAKER_01: And then,
[1:54] SPEAKER_01: on August 5th,
[1:56] SPEAKER_01: in response to a subpoena,
[1:58] SPEAKER_01: the White House released a tape,
[2:00] SPEAKER_01: recorded on June 23, 1972,
[2:03] SPEAKER_01: just six days after the Watergate break-in, that showed Nixon and his aide, H.R.
[2:10] SPEAKER_01: Haldeman, plotting to invoke national security to protect the president.
[2:16] SPEAKER_01: Even Republican senators, who had not wanted to convict their president, knew the game was over.
[2:23] SPEAKER_01: A delegation went to the White House to deliver the news to the President
[2:27] SPEAKER_01: that he must resign or be impeached by the Full House and convicted by the Senate.
[2:34] SPEAKER_01: On August 8, 1974,
[2:38] SPEAKER_01: Richard Nixon spoke to the American people to tell them he was resigning
[2:42] SPEAKER_01: the Presidency of the United States.
[2:46] SPEAKER_01: Throughout the long and difficult period of Watergate,
[2:50] SPEAKER_01: I have felt it was my duty to persevere,
[2:53] SPEAKER_01: to make every possible effort to complete the term of service to
[2:57] SPEAKER_01: which you elected me, he said.
[3:00] SPEAKER_01: In the past few days,
[3:01] SPEAKER_01: however,
[3:02] SPEAKER_01: he continued,
[3:03] SPEAKER_01: it has become evident to me that I no longer have a strong enough political base in
[3:09] SPEAKER_01: the Congress to justify continuing that effort.
[3:14] SPEAKER_01: From the discussions I have had with congressional and other leaders,
[3:19] SPEAKER_01: I have concluded that because of the Watergate matter,
[3:22] SPEAKER_01: I might not have the support of the Congress that I would consider necessary to back
[3:28] SPEAKER_01: the very difficult decisions and carry out the duties of this office in the way
[3:34] SPEAKER_01: the interests of the nation will require.
[3:38] SPEAKER_01: To leave office before my term is completed is abhorrent to every instinct in my body, he said.
[3:46] SPEAKER_01: But, as President, I must put the interests of America first.
[3:51] SPEAKER_01: America needs a full-time President and a full-time Congress,
[3:57] SPEAKER_01: particularly at this time with problems we face at home and abroad.
[4:04] SPEAKER_01: Therefore, I shall resign the presidency, effective at noon tomorrow.
[4:16] SPEAKER_00: Letters from an American was written and read by Heather Cox Richardson.
[4:20] SPEAKER_00: It was produced at Soundscape Productions, Dedham, Massachusetts.
[4:24] SPEAKER_00: Recorded with music composed by Michael Moss.
