[0:07] SPEAKER_01: July 27, 2026.
[0:10] SPEAKER_01: The Trump administration is trying to rewrite the history of the United States.
[0:16] SPEAKER_01: Trump officials reject our traditional understanding that the country was based on
[0:20] SPEAKER_01: the ideas the founders wrote in the Declaration of Independence,
[0:24] SPEAKER_01: and that Americans from all walks of life have struggled ever since
[0:28] SPEAKER_01: to make those principles come to life.
[0:32] SPEAKER_01: In place of that historic understanding,
[0:34] SPEAKER_01: the administration argues that the United States was founded as a white nation
[0:39] SPEAKER_01: whose citizens are defined by their European heritage and the land they inhabited,
[0:45] SPEAKER_01: an echo of the blood and soil ideology of Germany in the 1930s.
[0:51] SPEAKER_01: Making that shift requires erasing not just our multicultural past, but also our history.
[0:59] SPEAKER_01: On July 4th,
[1:00] SPEAKER_01: the White House Domestic Policy Council released a report titled,
[1:05] SPEAKER_01: Saving America's Story,
[1:07] SPEAKER_01: How Ideological Capture at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum
[1:12] SPEAKER_01: of American History Erases Our Heritage.
[1:16] SPEAKER_01: The report says that the National Museum of American History,
[1:19] SPEAKER_01: or NMAH, fails in the basic task of illuminating our heritage.
[1:27] SPEAKER_01: It continued,
[1:28] SPEAKER_01: our central finding is not that the museum has simply added overlooked stories,
[1:33] SPEAKER_01: corrected perceived errors, or broadened its historical scope.
[1:38] SPEAKER_01: Rather,
[1:38] SPEAKER_01: it is that the museum leadership has explicitly adopted an ideological framework
[1:44] SPEAKER_01: that no longer treats the American story as a shared national inheritance
[1:49] SPEAKER_01: to be taught or celebrated,
[1:51] SPEAKER_01: but as a political instrument to divide, dispirit, and discourage our citizens.
[1:59] SPEAKER_01: Even more oddly,
[2:00] SPEAKER_01: the report was a direct and personal attack on Dr.
[2:04] SPEAKER_01: Anthea M. Hartig,
[2:06] SPEAKER_01: director of the National Museum of American History,
[2:09] SPEAKER_01: whom it accused of exercising an extreme political activism that seeks
[2:15] SPEAKER_01: to transform our country.
[2:18] SPEAKER_01: The report claims that the National Museum
[2:21] SPEAKER_01: of American History purposely presents America as
[2:25] SPEAKER_01: a problematic country irredeemably conceived,
[2:29] SPEAKER_01: founded by deeply flawed men,
[2:31] SPEAKER_01: and still operating today as an instrument of systemic racism and oppression.
[2:38] SPEAKER_01: In the museum's current telling,
[2:40] SPEAKER_01: the country is,
[2:41] SPEAKER_01: above all,
[2:42] SPEAKER_01: defined by white supremacy,
[2:44] SPEAKER_01: slavery,
[2:45] SPEAKER_01: conquest,
[2:46] SPEAKER_01: exclusion, hierarchy, racism, xenophobia, misogyny, and systemic injustice.
[2:55] SPEAKER_01: It claims that the founders are minimized or excluded,
[2:59] SPEAKER_01: and that the story told of the nation is one of regret, tragedy, and shame.
[3:07] SPEAKER_01: It claims the museum has a long-time staff reading group devoted to a framework
[3:14] SPEAKER_01: that treats museums as places of activism and that the National Museum
[3:18] SPEAKER_01: of American History engages in illegal alien activism and transgender activism.
[3:27] SPEAKER_01: It attributes to the museum guilt by association for organizations that have helped
[3:32] SPEAKER_01: to fund exhibits,
[3:34] SPEAKER_01: including the Mellon Foundation,
[3:36] SPEAKER_01: which, an end note explains, allotted $72 million to racial justice projects.
[3:43] SPEAKER_01: Indeed, the authors of the report appear to be most exercised over racism,
[3:49] SPEAKER_01: shown in their anger over the museum's presentation of human enslavement.
[3:55] SPEAKER_01: They said the National Museum of American History should tell the story of how
[3:59] SPEAKER_01: the colonies inherited slavery from both global and European slaving practices
[4:06] SPEAKER_01: and how America's founders helped spark a worldwide movement
[4:10] SPEAKER_01: that ultimately ended slavery.
[4:13] SPEAKER_01: They want the museum to emphasize how 750,000 Americans died in the Civil War.
[4:20] SPEAKER_01: They did not appear to want mentioned that 258,000 of them died to protect enslavement.
[4:27] SPEAKER_01: And how Americans came to reject Jim Crow and segregation.
[4:33] SPEAKER_01: It should tell how the United States has done more to advance
[4:38] SPEAKER_01: and secure fundamental rights than any other nation in the world.
[4:43] SPEAKER_01: Part of that,
[4:44] SPEAKER_01: the report says,
[4:45] SPEAKER_01: should include America's contributions to global freedom,
[4:50] SPEAKER_01: from saving Europe from multiple tyrannies to illustrating the virtues of
[4:54] SPEAKER_01: a market economy and a free people.
[4:59] SPEAKER_01: The White House report is a nakedly political document seeking to prove that
[5:04] SPEAKER_01: the museum profession has catechized and codified the ideological dogma of DEI to
[5:12] SPEAKER_01: an astonishing degree.
[5:14] SPEAKER_01: It builds on Trump's belief that the Smithsonian has an improper ideology
[5:20] SPEAKER_01: that Trump says is too focused on how bad slavery was.
[5:26] SPEAKER_01: That political purpose was clear on July 21st when Hardig and Yale University U.S.
[5:32] SPEAKER_01: historian David Blight appeared before the House Delivering
[5:36] SPEAKER_01: on Government Efficiency Subcommittee of the House Committee on Oversight
[5:40] SPEAKER_01: and Government Reform.
[5:42] SPEAKER_01: Testifying as well were two critics of the Smithsonian,
[5:46] SPEAKER_01: Mike Gonzalez of the Right Wing Heritage Foundation and Matthew Spaulding
[5:51] SPEAKER_01: from Michigan's Christian Hillsdale College.
[5:55] SPEAKER_01: Another hearing the next day before the House Administration Committee continued
[5:59] SPEAKER_01: the same themes.
[6:01] SPEAKER_01: Harding told the committee that the report was inaccurate, saying,
[6:06] SPEAKER_01: We unwaveringly attest that it does not accurately or fairly characterize
[6:12] SPEAKER_01: the full range of work at the museum.
[6:16] SPEAKER_01: In fact,
[6:17] SPEAKER_01: the report ignores large,
[6:19] SPEAKER_01: long-term gallery exhibitions on subjects like the history of the U.S.
[6:24] SPEAKER_01: military currently on display.
[6:27] SPEAKER_01: That exhibit includes George Washington's sword and the chairs Generals Ulysses S.
[6:32] SPEAKER_01: Grant and Robert E.
[6:33] SPEAKER_01: Lee used at the Appomattox Surrender in favor
[6:37] SPEAKER_01: of past temporary revolving wall exhibitions in display cases along a wall.
[6:45] SPEAKER_01: The exhibit that infuriated the Republicans by mentioning transgender youth,
[6:50] SPEAKER_01: called Girlhood, It's Complicated, closed more than three years ago.
[6:57] SPEAKER_01: In her testimony,
[6:58] SPEAKER_01: Harding responded to the report's accusation that the museum fails
[7:03] SPEAKER_01: to substantively present America's founders and founding.
[7:09] SPEAKER_01: As Kelsey Ables of The Atlantic reported,
[7:12] SPEAKER_01: Harding pointed out,
[7:13] SPEAKER_01: we have a dozen exhibitions that include the founding era right now,
[7:19] SPEAKER_01: 368 objects, 340 labels.
[7:23] SPEAKER_01: George Washington is mentioned 54 times.
[7:26] SPEAKER_01: You have to walk by a whole section on George Washington in the Kenneth Baring Hall
[7:31] SPEAKER_01: of Military History to get to a 15-foot-tall reproduction of the Declaration
[7:37] SPEAKER_01: of Independence.
[7:39] SPEAKER_01: But in fact,
[7:40] SPEAKER_01: the goal of the report was demonstrably to create a straw man for MAGA supporters
[7:46] SPEAKER_01: to hate.
[7:48] SPEAKER_01: Ben Davis of ArtNet reported that Representative Nancy Mace,
[7:52] SPEAKER_01: a Republican of South Carolina,
[7:54] SPEAKER_01: claimed Hardig strives to represent queer pedophiles,
[7:59] SPEAKER_01: indoctrination, and grooming of kids at an American history museum.
[8:05] SPEAKER_01: And demanded, do you know how many kids get raped by adults every year in this country?
[8:11] SPEAKER_01: Representative Lauren Boebert,
[8:13] SPEAKER_01: a Republican of Colorado,
[8:15] SPEAKER_01: repeatedly demanded of Hartig where
[8:17] SPEAKER_01: the exhibitions honoring 50 million aborted babies are.
[8:23] SPEAKER_01: Representative Eric Burleson, a Republican of Missouri, demanded, do you love America?
[8:31] SPEAKER_01: I love this country unconditionally, Hartig replied.
[8:35] SPEAKER_01: She would repeat that sentiment repeatedly over the course of two days of hearings
[8:40] SPEAKER_01: as representatives talked over her to get clips to put on social media.
[8:46] SPEAKER_01: In a response to the administration's report,
[8:49] SPEAKER_01: Representative Joe Morelli of New York,
[8:51] SPEAKER_01: the top-ranking Democrat on the Committee on House Administration,
[8:55] SPEAKER_01: pointed out that in February 2017,
[8:59] SPEAKER_01: a month after his first inauguration,
[9:02] SPEAKER_01: Trump praised the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History
[9:06] SPEAKER_01: and Culture and its founding director, Dr.
[9:09] SPEAKER_01: Lonnie Bunch,
[9:10] SPEAKER_01: for sharing the great struggle for freedom and equality that prevailed against
[9:16] SPEAKER_01: the sins of slavery and the injustice of discrimination.
[9:22] SPEAKER_01: Smithsonian museums did not change what they teach about slavery between 2017
[9:28] SPEAKER_01: and today, Morelli writes.
[9:31] SPEAKER_01: Instead, the president changed his position on whether they should be allowed to teach it.
[9:38] SPEAKER_01: Morelli pointed out that the White House report demonized Hardig
[9:42] SPEAKER_01: by taking her words out of context.
[9:45] SPEAKER_01: For example,
[9:45] SPEAKER_01: it made much of her statement,
[9:47] SPEAKER_01: loving America is very complicated,
[9:50] SPEAKER_01: while omitting that she said that in a discussion with descendants
[9:55] SPEAKER_01: of enslaved Americans.
[9:58] SPEAKER_01: It attacked her use of the common historical term problematize,
[10:04] SPEAKER_01: which means to show that a simple idea is more complex than people realize,
[10:09] SPEAKER_01: criticizing her statement that the profession has to figure out how we're going
[10:15] SPEAKER_01: to problematize the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration
[10:21] SPEAKER_01: of Independence in 2026.
[10:25] SPEAKER_01: Morelli points out that the disjointed fragments
[10:27] SPEAKER_01: of this sentence show how deliberately the authors of the report butchered it.
[10:34] SPEAKER_01: The full sentence was,
[10:36] SPEAKER_01: we have to figure out,
[10:38] SPEAKER_01: all together,
[10:40] SPEAKER_01: how we're going to commemorate,
[10:42] SPEAKER_01: problematize,
[10:43] SPEAKER_01: remember,
[10:44] SPEAKER_01: and celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration
[10:49] SPEAKER_01: of Independence in 2026.
[10:53] SPEAKER_01: The report cut those words and then criticized her for insufficient celebration of the U.S.
[11:01] SPEAKER_01: The president doesn't control the Smithsonian,
[11:04] SPEAKER_01: so the only thing the report's authors could recommend was a label at every entrance
[11:09] SPEAKER_01: that reads,
[11:10] SPEAKER_01: warning,
[11:11] SPEAKER_01: the exhibits in this museum were prepared by people who don't want you
[11:15] SPEAKER_01: to love your country.
[11:18] SPEAKER_01: On July 24th,
[11:19] SPEAKER_01: the President issued Executive Order 14415,
[11:24] SPEAKER_01: titled, Restoring Trust in the Smithsonian Institution.
[11:29] SPEAKER_01: It ordered the National Park Service to place temporary signage outside
[11:33] SPEAKER_01: the Smithsonian that corrects inaccurate information presented inside the museum.
[11:41] SPEAKER_01: As Philip Kennicott of the Washington Post noted,
[11:45] SPEAKER_01: the attacks will take a toll on the scholars,
[11:48] SPEAKER_01: curators,
[11:49] SPEAKER_01: volunteers,
[11:50] SPEAKER_01: security guards,
[11:51] SPEAKER_01: and the rest of the loyal staff who will have to pass signs that demean
[11:56] SPEAKER_01: the integrity of their work.
[11:59] SPEAKER_01: And it's likely the MAGA ecosystem will pick up the harassment.
[12:04] SPEAKER_01: Earlier this month,
[12:05] SPEAKER_01: Bridget Gillespie,
[12:06] SPEAKER_01: a former intern at Jefferson's home,
[12:08] SPEAKER_01: Monticello,
[12:10] SPEAKER_01: detailed in The American Prospect how that harassment,
[12:14] SPEAKER_01: accusations of wokeness,
[12:16] SPEAKER_01: reviews calling tour guides morons,
[12:19] SPEAKER_01: visitors in pairs with one asking something provocative about slavery
[12:24] SPEAKER_01: or states' rights while the other filmed, changed the way interpreters operated.
[12:31] SPEAKER_01: History is not just a set of facts and events.
[12:35] SPEAKER_01: It's the study of how and why societies change.
[12:40] SPEAKER_01: Why do people act in certain ways?
[12:43] SPEAKER_01: Are there patterns in human behavior?
[12:46] SPEAKER_01: What makes a society successful?
[12:48] SPEAKER_01: What makes one fail?
[12:51] SPEAKER_01: Accuracy is imperative.
[12:54] SPEAKER_01: Without it,
[12:55] SPEAKER_01: we will learn the wrong answers,
[12:58] SPEAKER_01: not just about the way Jim and Juan Crow worked,
[13:01] SPEAKER_01: but also about whether our country's foundation is about race and land,
[13:07] SPEAKER_01: or, as the founders said, about principles and the rule of law.
[13:18] SPEAKER_00: Letters from an American was written and read by Heather Cox Richardson.
[13:22] SPEAKER_00: It was produced at Soundscape Productions, Dedham, Massachusetts.
[13:27] SPEAKER_00: Recorded with music composed by Michael Moss.
