[0:07] SPEAKER_01: July 29, 2026.
[0:10] SPEAKER_01: Ariel Edwards Levy of CNN reported today that a new CNN poll conducted by
[0:15] SPEAKER_01: the public opinion research firm SSRS found that 70% of adult Americans disapprove
[0:22] SPEAKER_01: of the way President Donald J.
[0:24] SPEAKER_01: Trump is handling the economy, while only 30% approve.
[0:29] SPEAKER_01: A whopping 75% disapprove of how Trump is handling inflation, while only 25% approve.
[0:36] SPEAKER_01: When it comes to gas prices, the numbers are even worse for the president.
[0:41] SPEAKER_01: 79% disapprove, while only 21% approve.
[0:46] SPEAKER_01: 65% think Trump's own economic policies have hurt the country,
[0:50] SPEAKER_01: while only 22% think those policies have improved the economy.
[0:56] SPEAKER_01: 73% of those polled said Trump hasn't paid enough attention to
[0:59] SPEAKER_01: the country's most important problems, while 27% said he has the right priorities.
[1:06] SPEAKER_01: 67% agreed that Trump puts his own gain over the good of the country.
[1:11] SPEAKER_01: 34% agreed that he does not.
[1:14] SPEAKER_01: Only 43% of those polled thought Trump has the stamina and sharpness
[1:19] SPEAKER_01: to serve effectively as president, while 57% did not agree with that statement.
[1:26] SPEAKER_01: As Edwards-Levy notes,
[1:27] SPEAKER_01: Trump's overall approval rating in the new CNN poll matches his rating just after
[1:33] SPEAKER_01: the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol, his lowest ever, at 34%.
[1:40] SPEAKER_01: The number of those who strongly disapprove of him is 50%,
[1:44] SPEAKER_01: a new high, while only 15% strongly support him, a record low.
[1:51] SPEAKER_01: Edwards-Levy points out that people polled aren't keen on the way Trump's handling
[1:55] SPEAKER_01: the situation in Iran.
[1:57] SPEAKER_01: 72% disapprove, while only 28% approve.
[2:02] SPEAKER_01: 67% think his actions there have hurt the U.S.,
[2:05] SPEAKER_01: while only 21% think those actions have helped the U.S.
[2:10] SPEAKER_01: So, as she puts it,
[2:11] SPEAKER_01: just 28% approve of his handling of the situation in Iran,
[2:16] SPEAKER_01: 25% on inflation,
[2:18] SPEAKER_01: and 21% on gas prices,
[2:21] SPEAKER_01: with significant pockets of disapproval even among his supporters.
[2:26] SPEAKER_01: Americans unhappy with Trump's war on Iran are unlikely to be cheered by the news
[2:31] SPEAKER_01: from that conflict over the past few days.
[2:35] SPEAKER_01: Andrew Egger wrote in The Bulwark today about how
[2:38] SPEAKER_01: the Trump administration seems stuck in a loop,
[2:41] SPEAKER_01: orbiting hopelessly around two demonstrably failed positions.
[2:46] SPEAKER_01: If we bomb the hell out of them, they'll give us what we want.
[2:49] SPEAKER_01: If we stop bombing them, they'll give us what we want.
[2:53] SPEAKER_01: Adina Renner of the New York Times today called this the whiplash war
[2:58] SPEAKER_01: and provided charts of attacks showing what this looping looks like on
[3:01] SPEAKER_01: a daily basis.
[3:03] SPEAKER_01: Meanwhile, Iranian negotiators have made their demands quite clear.
[3:08] SPEAKER_01: Sanctions removed,
[3:09] SPEAKER_01: troops out,
[3:10] SPEAKER_01: no more discussion of nuclear weapons, and Iranian control of the Strait of Hormuz.
[3:17] SPEAKER_01: Laura Wise,
[3:18] SPEAKER_01: a scholar of peace and conflict resolution at the University of Edinburgh,
[3:22] SPEAKER_01: told Renner that the process of ending the war has been complicated by
[3:26] SPEAKER_01: the fact American negotiators seem focused on getting a deal rather
[3:31] SPEAKER_01: than making peace.
[3:33] SPEAKER_01: Davis Winkie of CNN reported that on Saturday,
[3:36] SPEAKER_01: the Pentagon changed the way it was accounting for military personnel injured in
[3:41] SPEAKER_01: the Iran war.
[3:43] SPEAKER_01: After the removal from the defense casualty analysis system of four members killed
[3:47] SPEAKER_01: by Iranian strikes in Jordan and Iraq last week created an outcry
[3:52] SPEAKER_01: and brought renewed attention to accusations the Pentagon was not being transparent
[3:57] SPEAKER_01: about the human toll of the war.
[3:59] SPEAKER_01: On Saturday,
[4:00] SPEAKER_01: the Pentagon added more than 140 additional soldiers to the database and restored
[4:06] SPEAKER_01: the four missing soldiers.
[4:08] SPEAKER_01: The numbers now show 18 troops dead and another 624 wounded since February 28th,
[4:16] SPEAKER_01: when Trump began strikes against Iran.
[4:20] SPEAKER_01: Over the weekend, military strikes in the region paused as Trump decided against an escalation.
[4:26] SPEAKER_01: According to U.S.
[4:27] SPEAKER_01: officials who spoke to Eric Schmidt and Jonathan Swan of the New York Times,
[4:32] SPEAKER_01: that decision came in part because the U.S.
[4:34] SPEAKER_01: military is running low on Patriot anti-missile interceptors
[4:38] SPEAKER_01: and other air defense munitions necessary to shoot down Iranian missiles.
[4:44] SPEAKER_01: The journalists reported that the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff,
[4:47] SPEAKER_01: General Dan Kane,
[4:49] SPEAKER_01: had warned that further combat would dangerously deplete interceptors,
[4:54] SPEAKER_01: a leak that suggests real dissent within the White House over the execution of
[4:59] SPEAKER_01: the war.
[5:00] SPEAKER_01: On Meet the Press on Sunday, U.N.
[5:03] SPEAKER_01: Ambassador Mike Waltz told host Kristen Welker that any problems
[5:07] SPEAKER_01: with munitions were former President Joe Biden's fault,
[5:11] SPEAKER_01: but added that the U.S.
[5:12] SPEAKER_01: has everything it needs to conduct this campaign,
[5:15] SPEAKER_01: and the people who are leaking this nonsense deserve to be in jail.
[5:21] SPEAKER_01: Top advisors also expressed concern over a widening war and
[5:25] SPEAKER_01: the economic crunch caused by the crisis.
[5:28] SPEAKER_01: But yesterday, U.S.
[5:30] SPEAKER_01: Central Command posted that forces from
[5:32] SPEAKER_01: the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had launched missiles in
[5:36] SPEAKER_01: an attempted surprise attack on U.S. forces.
[5:41] SPEAKER_01: Jared Malson and Suha Ma'aya of the Wall Street Journal noted
[5:45] SPEAKER_01: that this surprise attack is the first in which the Iranians have gone on offense.
[5:51] SPEAKER_01: Hamadreza Azizi,
[5:53] SPEAKER_01: a visiting fellow specializing in Iran at the German Institute for International
[5:57] SPEAKER_01: and Security Affairs,
[5:59] SPEAKER_01: told the journalists that this shift indicates Iranian officials see themselves
[6:05] SPEAKER_01: as having the upper hand.
[6:07] SPEAKER_01: It was a signal of a sort of calibrated escalation.
[6:12] SPEAKER_01: They might have increased confidence because,
[6:15] SPEAKER_01: as John Irish and Jonathan Saul of Reuters reported yesterday,
[6:19] SPEAKER_01: they are expecting a shipment of up
[6:21] SPEAKER_01: to 400 Chinese-made shoulder-fired air defense missile launchers within weeks.
[6:29] SPEAKER_01: U.S. Central Command said all of last night's Iranian missiles were intercepted.
[6:34] SPEAKER_01: Trump nonetheless took the attacks poorly,
[6:37] SPEAKER_01: telling the Fox News channel,
[6:39] SPEAKER_01: we are going to beat the U.S.
[6:42] SPEAKER_01: and Saudi Arabian forces struck against an Iranian-backed militia in Iraq.
[6:55] SPEAKER_01: Oil prices rose with the news of renewed strikes.
[6:58] SPEAKER_01: Despite concerns about rising inflation,
[7:01] SPEAKER_01: the Federal Open Market Committee voted 9-3 to hold interest rates steady.
[7:07] SPEAKER_01: The three dissenting regional Fed Bank presidents voted to raise interest rates.
[7:14] SPEAKER_01: Concern over inflation and uncertainty about the economy sent
[7:18] SPEAKER_01: the stock market plunging today in its worst day since April 2025,
[7:23] SPEAKER_01: when Trump announced his Liberation Day tariffs.
[7:28] SPEAKER_01: And so, Republicans are devoting themselves to serving red meat to their MAGA base,
[7:34] SPEAKER_01: ginning up sound bites for distribution on social media.
[7:39] SPEAKER_01: On the menu today was Dr.
[7:40] SPEAKER_01: Anthony Fauci,
[7:42] SPEAKER_01: the 85-year-old director of the National Institute of Allergy
[7:45] SPEAKER_01: and Infectious Diseases, who,
[7:48] SPEAKER_01: serving in that capacity for 38 years,
[7:51] SPEAKER_01: advised seven different presidents of both parties.
[7:55] SPEAKER_01: President George W.
[7:56] SPEAKER_01: Bush awarded Fauci the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work in creating
[8:01] SPEAKER_01: the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief,
[8:04] SPEAKER_01: or PEPFAR, which has saved an estimated 26 million lives.
[8:11] SPEAKER_01: Trump named Fauci to the President's Coronavirus Task Force in January 2020.
[8:17] SPEAKER_01: But as Savannah Berman and Jeanine Santucci of USA Today reported in October 2020,
[8:24] SPEAKER_01: Trump turned on Fauci as he cautioned against Trump's confident predictions that
[8:29] SPEAKER_01: the disease would disappear quickly.
[8:32] SPEAKER_01: By February 28th,
[8:34] SPEAKER_01: Trump insisted that Democrats were politicizing COVID,
[8:38] SPEAKER_01: and by April 26th,
[8:39] SPEAKER_01: news broke that Trump wanted to sideline Fauci,
[8:43] SPEAKER_01: although Fauci was considered trustworthy and viewed favorably by
[8:46] SPEAKER_01: a three-to-one margin.
[8:49] SPEAKER_01: By the summer,
[8:50] SPEAKER_01: as Trump's panic over how the economic crisis caused by
[8:54] SPEAKER_01: the pandemic might hurt his reelection prospects,
[8:57] SPEAKER_01: he turned on Fauci,
[8:58] SPEAKER_01: who continued to support measures to stop the spread of the disease.
[9:03] SPEAKER_01: Trump worked to undermine Fauci's warnings,
[9:06] SPEAKER_01: saying that the doctors and the Centers for Disease Control
[9:09] SPEAKER_01: and Prevention were lying about COVID.
[9:13] SPEAKER_01: By July, he mused about why Fauci had a high approval rating, and he didn't.
[9:19] SPEAKER_01: When Fauci testified to Congress that U.S.
[9:22] SPEAKER_01: cases were spiking while European countries were seeing sharp drops in COVID cases
[9:27] SPEAKER_01: because European countries had shut down 95% of their economies while the U.S.
[9:32] SPEAKER_01: had shut down only 50%,
[9:35] SPEAKER_01: Trump posted,
[9:36] SPEAKER_01: wrong, we have more cases because we have tested far more than any other country.
[9:41] SPEAKER_01: If we tested less, there would be less cases.
[9:46] SPEAKER_01: As Trump continued to criticize Fauci and yet ran
[9:49] SPEAKER_01: a campaign ad suggesting Fauci endorsed his re-election,
[9:53] SPEAKER_01: the doctor continued to emphasize that he was not a political person.
[9:58] SPEAKER_01: He added, and I have never, either directly or indirectly, endorsed a political candidate.
[10:06] SPEAKER_01: In October, he dismissed Trump's attacks, saying, they don't bother me.
[10:11] SPEAKER_01: I know what my job is, and I've got to do it, and I'm going to do it.
[10:14] SPEAKER_01: So that kind of, whatever you want to call it, is to me, I just, it's noise.
[10:21] SPEAKER_01: As Aaron Rupar reminded us today,
[10:23] SPEAKER_01: Trump himself awarded a presidential commendation to Fauci in recognition
[10:28] SPEAKER_01: of his exceptional effort on Operation Warp Speed.
[10:33] SPEAKER_01: But with the arrival of a vaccine that helped to put the worst of the pandemic
[10:36] SPEAKER_01: behind us,
[10:38] SPEAKER_01: MAGA Republicans began to demonize Dr.
[10:40] SPEAKER_01: Fauci not only as a source of the mask mandates and school shutdowns they hated,
[10:46] SPEAKER_01: but also as the source of the virus itself,
[10:49] SPEAKER_01: alleging,
[10:50] SPEAKER_01: without evidence,
[10:51] SPEAKER_01: that the disease had escaped from a lab in Wuhan,
[10:54] SPEAKER_01: China, for which the U.S. National Institutes of Health provided funding.
[11:01] SPEAKER_01: After voters re-elected Trump to the presidency in 2024,
[11:05] SPEAKER_01: he and his loyalists vowed to prosecute Fauci.
[11:08] SPEAKER_01: Trump ally Steve Bannon called for rough Roman justice for Fauci,
[11:14] SPEAKER_01: as well as Special Counsel Jack Smith and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs
[11:17] SPEAKER_01: of Staff Mark Milley.
[11:20] SPEAKER_01: Before he left office,
[11:21] SPEAKER_01: former President Joe Biden issued a preemptive pardon for Fauci and others
[11:26] SPEAKER_01: to protect them from political prosecution, saying...
[11:30] SPEAKER_01: The issuance of these pardons should not be mistaken as an acknowledgment
[11:35] SPEAKER_01: that any individual engaged in any wrongdoing,
[11:39] SPEAKER_01: nor should acceptance be misconstrued as an admission of guilt for any offense.
[11:46] SPEAKER_01: But Republicans have continued to demonize Fauci,
[11:49] SPEAKER_01: ginning up anger against him in their base even as the rest of the country has moved
[11:53] SPEAKER_01: on.
[11:55] SPEAKER_01: Now, with the political tides running so strongly against the Republicans before
[11:59] SPEAKER_01: the 2026 midterm elections,
[12:02] SPEAKER_01: they are clearly trying to rekindle the fury of the last presidential election.
[12:08] SPEAKER_01: As the Associated Press reported today,
[12:11] SPEAKER_01: for years,
[12:12] SPEAKER_01: Senator Rand Paul,
[12:13] SPEAKER_01: a Republican of Kentucky,
[12:15] SPEAKER_01: has accused Fauci of lying about the origins of COVID,
[12:19] SPEAKER_01: an accusation Fauci has called preposterous in testimony before Congress.
[12:25] SPEAKER_01: Paul has repeatedly called for Fauci's arrest and imprisonment,
[12:29] SPEAKER_01: and in 2023 published a book with Fauci on the cover,
[12:33] SPEAKER_01: explicating what he called the great COVID cover-up.
[12:39] SPEAKER_01: The Trump administration has fed Paul's crusade,
[12:42] SPEAKER_01: with Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F.
[12:45] SPEAKER_01: Kennedy Jr.
[12:46] SPEAKER_01: searching for eight months to find Fauci's private diary on government computers,
[12:51] SPEAKER_01: then handing the files over to Paul and to Senator Ron Johnson,
[12:55] SPEAKER_01: a Republican of Wisconsin.
[12:58] SPEAKER_01: Neither Kennedy, Paul,
[13:00] SPEAKER_01: nor Johnson told Fauci they had obtained his 1,000-page diary
[13:05] SPEAKER_01: before they published it in full last week.
[13:10] SPEAKER_01: In July 2021,
[13:12] SPEAKER_01: Fauci wrote in his diary that an analysis of the viruses used in
[13:16] SPEAKER_01: the Wuhan lab clearly indicates that it is molecularly impossible for the viruses
[13:23] SPEAKER_01: under the auspices of the NIH grant to have been manipulated into or evolved into
[13:30] SPEAKER_01: the COVID virus.
[13:32] SPEAKER_01: Now chair of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee,
[13:36] SPEAKER_01: Paul subpoenaed Fauci in June to appear before the committee.
[13:41] SPEAKER_01: Unwillingly,
[13:42] SPEAKER_01: as his lawyers noted Paul's many statements calling for Fauci to be jailed,
[13:47] SPEAKER_01: Fauci did so today.
[13:50] SPEAKER_01: In an opening statement,
[13:51] SPEAKER_01: Fauci said that he believed the sole reason Paul is calling me
[13:56] SPEAKER_01: before this committee is to get me to say something,
[13:59] SPEAKER_01: anything that could vindicate his repeated public pledges that I end up,
[14:04] SPEAKER_01: in his words, quote, behind bars, unquote.
[14:10] SPEAKER_01: Any reasonable person who has followed his unhinged obsession
[14:14] SPEAKER_01: with me would readily come to the same conclusion, he said.
[14:19] SPEAKER_01: Therefore,
[14:20] SPEAKER_01: although it pains me to do so because of the respect I have for
[14:24] SPEAKER_01: the legislative branch of government and my decades-long record of cooperating
[14:29] SPEAKER_01: with Congress,
[14:30] SPEAKER_01: under the advice of my attorneys,
[14:32] SPEAKER_01: I will invoke my right under the Fifth Amendment of the Constitution to refrain
[14:37] SPEAKER_01: from answering your questions.
[14:41] SPEAKER_01: More than a hundred times he did exactly that,
[14:44] SPEAKER_01: as Republicans berated him,
[14:46] SPEAKER_01: calling him a narcissist and a megalomaniac and a liar,
[14:51] SPEAKER_01: mocking him and asking him, do you feel like you're in deep s***?
[14:56] SPEAKER_01: What Republicans did not do is introduce any evidence that
[15:00] SPEAKER_01: the 85-year-old lifelong public servant had broken any laws.
[15:06] SPEAKER_01: More to the point was Senator Bernie Moreno,
[15:09] SPEAKER_01: a Republican of Ohio,
[15:10] SPEAKER_01: yelling at Fauci about closings during the pandemic,
[15:14] SPEAKER_01: blustering,
[15:19] SPEAKER_01: F-bombs are rare on the Senate floor,
[15:21] SPEAKER_01: and the outburst has gotten significant media attention.
[15:26] SPEAKER_01: That attention has distracted from the other reason Moreno is in the news.
[15:31] SPEAKER_01: As Abby Vassoulis of Mother Jones reported,
[15:35] SPEAKER_01: Moreno has said nothing as his daughter's ex-husband,
[15:40] SPEAKER_01: Representative Max Miller,
[15:42] SPEAKER_01: a Republican of Ohio,
[15:44] SPEAKER_01: has been credibly charged with the violent abuse of her
[15:48] SPEAKER_01: and their two-year-old daughter.
[15:52] SPEAKER_01: As the Republicans struggle to hold on to their congressional majorities,
[15:56] SPEAKER_01: Republican leaders have refused to call for Miller,
[16:00] SPEAKER_01: who is running for a third term, to resign.
[16:09] SPEAKER_00: Letters from an American was written and read by Heather Cox Richardson.
[16:13] SPEAKER_00: It was produced at Soundscape Productions, Dedham, Massachusetts.
[16:18] SPEAKER_00: Recorded with music composed by Michael Moss.
