[0:00] Speaker 1: And okay, you'll be ready to go. We're ready to go.
[0:03] Speaker 1: Grand Final, done and dusted. What what a season means? Oh?
[0:08] Speaker 2: What a great season of rugby league.
[0:09] Speaker 1: One of the greatest seasons that I've seen, without a doubt,
[0:12] Speaker 1: the greatest final series I've seen, and one of the
[0:14] Speaker 1: greatest Grand finals.
[0:15] Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, but the final series has just been amazing,
[0:19] Speaker 2: the best, breaking all the records the AFL.
[0:22] Speaker 1: Been, some of the games in the finals, some of
[0:24] Speaker 1: the best games I've ever seen.
[0:26] Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean every every Broncos game was scintillating. Every
[0:31] Speaker 2: single Broncos game. They here's a stat that someone told me,
[0:34] Speaker 2: because they had a punt at the Grand Final on
[0:38] Speaker 2: Melbourne to be leading at halftime by nine plus. Broncos
[0:42] Speaker 2: haven't won a first half in any finals game they've had.
[0:45] Speaker 1: Right, I'm going to get to that. Oh one second,
[0:48] Speaker 1: I've got some stuff for you. Got to go with
[0:50] Speaker 1: me on it.
[0:51] Speaker 2: I'll go with you to the depth of hell with legend.
[0:54] Speaker 1: Geez. That's a change of attitude. Firstly, first, before we
[0:58] Speaker 1: get on all the football stuff, Teddy swim m man,
[1:01] Speaker 1: I'm a believer.
[1:02] Speaker 2: I'll tell you what. Live at the ground. They pump
[1:05] Speaker 2: the they pump the speakers up loud, and it was amazing.
[1:09] Speaker 2: I was, I was on the edge of my seat
[1:10] Speaker 2: because live you can kind of not get much of
[1:12] Speaker 2: a vibe for it. Sometimes it's but someone with that
[1:16] Speaker 2: sort of vocals, he was blowing that place apart where
[1:20] Speaker 2: he was unbelieved. When he did TNT ac DC, it
[1:23] Speaker 2: was like the whole place was just up on their feet.
[1:26] Speaker 1: It was gone. It's fantastic to do that, like you know,
[1:29] Speaker 1: how to do that, to pay homage to one of
[1:32] Speaker 1: the country you know, one of the country's greatest.
[1:37] Speaker 2: It always annoys me how some artists, like obviously their
[1:40] Speaker 2: labels will tell them, I play this song because we're
[1:42] Speaker 2: trying to promote this album. Promote that. You know what's
[1:45] Speaker 2: going to promote your album and get people like you
[1:47] Speaker 2: if you just put in a good performance of people enjoy.
[1:50] Speaker 1: Play your crowd exactly, play your greatest songs, and that's
[1:53] Speaker 1: what introduces people to your music. From there they discover
[1:55] Speaker 1: all the other stuff.
[1:56] Speaker 2: Yeah, but like even to do TNT, like it'd be
[1:59] Speaker 2: very people just do their songs out of out of
[2:02] Speaker 2: I suppose to promote themselves. But to chuck in TNT,
[2:05] Speaker 2: that was that was the icing on that man's cake.
[2:08] Speaker 2: Teddy swims, take about.
[2:09] Speaker 1: Take about? And what a kilt? Enjoy the kilt, by
[2:12] Speaker 1: the way, Yeah, lovely navy blue like checkered kilt.
[2:16] Speaker 2: I know when he ripped that off, I was worried.
[2:18] Speaker 2: I thought, Teddy, there are kids in the crowd.
[2:20] Speaker 1: Teddy, look at those calf muscles.
[2:21] Speaker 2: Holy to Bully. Yeah, he's a Tabully is an excellent condiment.
[2:28] Speaker 1: Okay, the game, Well, I don't have it on my kebab.
[2:31] Speaker 1: When I have it, I just I don't. I just
[2:34] Speaker 1: find it too.
[2:35] Speaker 2: I get the light, I get everything on my kebab, now, tomato, onion, everything,
[2:39] Speaker 2: and then I go garlic sauce, barbecue sauce, sometimes even
[2:43] Speaker 2: sweet chilli.
[2:43] Speaker 1: I find I find the garlic too strong. I go
[2:46] Speaker 1: the tomato, or go the onion. I go everything else.
[2:48] Speaker 1: I don't have the bully Polly, and I have the
[2:53] Speaker 1: barbecue sauce.
[2:53] Speaker 2: Because I I After the Grand Final, I had a
[2:56] Speaker 2: couple of schooners. And then on the way back, I
[2:58] Speaker 2: was going a kebab and the hours and a lady
[3:02] Speaker 2: was in there and I was asking what she gets
[3:03] Speaker 2: on it? She only gets aoli. And I had some
[3:06] Speaker 2: stern words to it. I took that quite offensive and
[3:08] Speaker 2: did I go over the top and maybe say things
[3:11] Speaker 2: are a little bit disrespectful? Yes, I am so. I
[3:13] Speaker 2: want to apologize to that lady. But you've got to
[3:15] Speaker 2: have barbecue sauce and garlic sauce.
[3:17] Speaker 1: Of course you do. Of course we'll not garlic sauce.
[3:19] Speaker 1: Barbecue sauce. Barbecue sauce is a one. It's a condiment
[3:23] Speaker 1: that can just just a bit be placed on everything.
[3:26] Speaker 1: Make a bow. Barbecue sauce.
[3:28] Speaker 2: Tomato sauce has to go on a pie like if
[3:30] Speaker 2: you put barbie pot on Because Harry Grant he puts
[3:32] Speaker 2: barbecue on a pie and I don't like it. No,
[3:35] Speaker 2: I don't like that. Tomato sauce is for your meat pie.
[3:38] Speaker 2: Totally agree, you know what I'm saying.
[3:40] Speaker 1: Brisbane had one magnificent final series from round from from
[3:46] Speaker 1: the regular round three. They won seven in a row,
[3:49] Speaker 1: most against powerhouse opposition to win the title. And they
[3:52] Speaker 1: were able to sustain a standard of football and keep
[3:56] Speaker 1: making great comebacks. And that is a result and we've
[3:59] Speaker 1: said this before, the old buckets, spear buckets. It was
[4:02] Speaker 1: physical conditioning, hard physical conditioning which fed mental toughness and
[4:07] Speaker 1: without that, they don't win, they can't make comebacks. Okay,
[4:11] Speaker 1: so take a bow, Madge, like feed Inkham, take about
[4:15] Speaker 1: your last couple of years have been remarkable. Let's just
[4:17] Speaker 1: talk about what he dealt with with the and what
[4:19] Speaker 1: he achieved at the Broncos. Firstly, the amount of criticism
[4:23] Speaker 1: that he wore, even before he collected the clipboard, people saying,
[4:28] Speaker 1: oh new South walesman coach and the Broncos give me
[4:31] Speaker 1: a break. The Blakers coached the new South Wales Blues
[4:33] Speaker 1: over my dead body. All that sort of stuff went
[4:35] Speaker 1: on and he was able to wear it and get
[4:39] Speaker 1: through it.
[4:39] Speaker 2: I wonder I'd love to get I mean, we imagine
[4:42] Speaker 2: there'll be another time where we would get match back
[4:45] Speaker 2: on the potty, but I'd love to understand the year
[4:47] Speaker 2: in comparison to the criticism he copped at the Tigers.
[4:51] Speaker 2: What was the difference? You know, how much pressure did
[4:54] Speaker 2: he feel this year in comparison because he was scrutinized
[4:57] Speaker 2: when he was at the Tigers. Heavily scrutinized a lot
[5:00] Speaker 2: of media attention, which ultimately ended up leaving there. But
[5:05] Speaker 2: I wonder just how much criticism and how much. It
[5:08] Speaker 2: took a toll on him at the Broncos or is
[5:10] Speaker 2: he had enough experience now where that stuff just rolled
[5:13] Speaker 2: off the back.
[5:14] Speaker 1: He just eat for unfairly. He carries this thing with him.
[5:17] Speaker 1: The people go, oh made he trains them too hard?
[5:20] Speaker 1: Oh it is? You know he he lacks empathy for
[5:23] Speaker 1: his players. He makes them play injured. He no coach,
[5:26] Speaker 1: I don't think, bounces from club to club and has
[5:28] Speaker 1: to put up with that. At the end of the day,
[5:31] Speaker 1: he gets results, correct, that's it. Like at South Sydney.
[5:34] Speaker 1: He was southseitting for a long time and towards the
[5:38] Speaker 1: end both needed to change. Both parties needed to change.
[5:41] Speaker 1: He needed the break, players needed a different system. But
[5:44] Speaker 1: before that made he won their first Grand Finals in
[5:47] Speaker 1: nineteen seventy one. And I know, I certainly know the
[5:49] Speaker 1: set people of sou Sitting. You don't forget that.
[5:51] Speaker 2: Yeah, But to you who actually deserves a rap too,
[5:55] Speaker 2: because yes, coaches can train people hard, and I think
[5:59] Speaker 2: there's only ever criticism will backlash from it when you
[6:01] Speaker 2: haven't got the playing group who buy in and the
[6:04] Speaker 2: culture that actually just go you know what, Let's just
[6:07] Speaker 2: push through this and we're going to come out the
[6:09] Speaker 2: other side of better side. Shout out to the Broncos
[6:12] Speaker 2: players because could have been very easy for them at
[6:15] Speaker 2: some point to crack the shits and then they wouldn't
[6:17] Speaker 2: be where they are if they hadn't all board in
[6:19] Speaker 2: together and they had some toxic people in there. But
[6:21] Speaker 2: I reckon the turning point for them is and what
[6:23] Speaker 2: has helped madg is Kevy got them to a Grand
[6:26] Speaker 2: Final and twenty twenty three and their leaders, particularly like
[6:30] Speaker 2: Adam Reynolds Ben Hunt who wasn't there, but he's been
[6:32] Speaker 2: desperate to get back to a Grand Final for ten years.
[6:36] Speaker 2: They are so hungry and desperate to win a Grand
[6:39] Speaker 2: Final because they all had something to play for. Yep,
[6:43] Speaker 2: they all were hurting from that twenty twenty three.
[6:45] Speaker 1: And let me tell you, there were people laying the
[6:47] Speaker 1: bait for the players to bite on you. I mean
[6:50] Speaker 1: laying the bait going make players are off here, players
[6:52] Speaker 1: training to you know. I think at one point they're
[6:56] Speaker 1: coming eleventh and people laying the bait down for the
[6:59] Speaker 1: player going home trained them too hard. Look and the
[7:02] Speaker 1: rumors going around that the players were off him. I
[7:04] Speaker 1: asked one player in confidence, other players off him? I
[7:08] Speaker 1: wanted to know, like are they because I didn't believe it.
[7:12] Speaker 1: The stuff that i'd heard is to players role on board.
[7:14] Speaker 1: He said, nah, plays off him at all, said everyone
[7:18] Speaker 1: believes in what we're doing.
[7:19] Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean they got and they got some good
[7:21] Speaker 2: cat like even even shouted to Billy Walters right, like
[7:24] Speaker 2: his old man gets sacked and Billy and his old
[7:26] Speaker 2: man are that close. Billy loves that club. He's been
[7:29] Speaker 2: he was a ball boy at that club when Kevy
[7:31] Speaker 2: and Gordie were there. You know, he's got broncos in
[7:35] Speaker 2: his DNA. Could have been very easy for him to
[7:37] Speaker 2: crack the shits, potentially even become a little bit toxic
[7:40] Speaker 2: to that group and start turning people. Boma Respectabilly at
[7:43] Speaker 2: the start of the year, and I don't even know
[7:45] Speaker 2: if he was really he hadn't cemented sort of his
[7:48] Speaker 2: spot in that team yet. But he was so hungry
[7:51] Speaker 2: to prove to match. He was so hungry of trying
[7:54] Speaker 2: to get a premiership with that side, Like they all
[7:56] Speaker 2: had such a strong attitude and you need everyone going
[8:00] Speaker 2: in the same direction to win a camp like it
[8:02] Speaker 2: is that hard to win a premiership in this competition.
[8:04] Speaker 1: And the proofs in the pudding I'll just run through
[8:08] Speaker 1: some of the stuff here just to consider some of
[8:10] Speaker 1: his achievements here. And one of the things the achieved
[8:13] Speaker 1: was the pressure of power, powerful Queensland, Rubilu Dandies hitting
[8:17] Speaker 1: him with string, strong criticism with his feet. Every time
[8:20] Speaker 1: they lost, how to defeat people come out and Bang
[8:22] Speaker 1: was back on again. You know, they could win three
[8:25] Speaker 1: in a row and all of a sudden they dropped
[8:26] Speaker 1: one or two in a row. Bang at starting again.
[8:28] Speaker 1: So we had to endure that. But injuries to key
[8:31] Speaker 1: men at key times through the season, they're able to
[8:34] Speaker 1: maintain and hold their nerve. He got men like a
[8:37] Speaker 1: Shibasaki Tyson Smoothie, which hasn't been a lot of spoken
[8:40] Speaker 1: about him, playing beyond people and maybe even maybe even
[8:44] Speaker 1: their own expectations. Yeah, and he made tough calls, I mean,
[8:49] Speaker 1: dropping stars like Sell and Koba, you know, and youngsters
[8:52] Speaker 1: like Karaphani and Dean Maron are coming into the side
[8:55] Speaker 1: who not like new of them, but made those two
[8:57] Speaker 1: blokes were just outstanding in yard is what they did.
[9:00] Speaker 1: But crucially Cooper, crucially he got his superstars playing career
[9:05] Speaker 1: best football payinhasse Ca, Tony Stags and of course oh
[9:11] Speaker 1: my god, if there was one bloke I reckon that
[9:15] Speaker 1: would not have liked Madge's methods, like how hard he trained,
[9:19] Speaker 1: and just just probably Madge is just demeanor because somebody
[9:23] Speaker 1: you look at me and Ree, they could not be
[9:24] Speaker 1: more polarized, you know what I mean. Madge is very
[9:27] Speaker 1: conservative sort of guy. Reese's guy. You know, he'll paint
[9:31] Speaker 1: his females all those things. Yet those two blokes. Yet
[9:35] Speaker 1: what he did for Reese Walsh, like got him playing
[9:37] Speaker 1: the best football screen you can see it full time.
[9:39] Speaker 1: You know how much Res appreciated that and the love
[9:42] Speaker 1: he had for me.
[9:43] Speaker 2: I think the Boys changed Madge too. I think from
[9:47] Speaker 2: the start of the year to that to watching madgine
[9:49] Speaker 2: the sheds after the game, drinking out of the some
[9:52] Speaker 2: of the like stuff they had him doing and in
[9:54] Speaker 2: the press. But they I really think that that group
[10:00] Speaker 2: made Madge realized stuff too. And I think they I
[10:02] Speaker 2: think that group, although they are all polar opposites, I
[10:05] Speaker 2: think they've both been so good for each other.
[10:07] Speaker 1: Yep.
[10:08] Speaker 2: And I think Madge has actually gone you know, he's
[10:11] Speaker 2: he's had big personalities before, but I don't think he's
[10:14] Speaker 2: had personality like Rheese Walsh, who is not just a
[10:17] Speaker 2: big figure in the game, but he's a completely polar
[10:20] Speaker 2: opposite personality to what is expected in rugby league. Like
[10:23] Speaker 2: he's himself. He's a rugby league player, but at the
[10:26] Speaker 2: end of the day, like he's he's completely different than
[10:29] Speaker 2: most molds of rugby league players. He's he's who he is.
[10:32] Speaker 2: He loves his social media, loves loves everything.
[10:34] Speaker 1: And a couple of things happened too through the year,
[10:36] Speaker 1: like you know, the punching in the head, you know
[10:38] Speaker 1: that one punch, there was that, and of course the
[10:41] Speaker 1: toilet thing. A lot of other coaches lost their nerve
[10:43] Speaker 1: a bit on that. They came out and said, look,
[10:45] Speaker 1: I've reprimanded him, My understand his match. Just they couldn't
[10:48] Speaker 1: give a ship. Yeah, they get on with it. Just
[10:51] Speaker 1: get on with it. It is awesome, It is okay,
[10:54] Speaker 1: go with me on this coupe, all right. This has
[10:56] Speaker 1: been crucial through the through the final series, the Broncos
[10:59] Speaker 1: will placed in situations which actually forced them to the
[11:03] Speaker 1: style of football they produce their best. That high octane, expansive,
[11:08] Speaker 1: aggressive football and the sort of football where you're willing
[11:12] Speaker 1: to make errors in the pursuit of points. Now that
[11:15] Speaker 1: they were forced into that situation. Those situations how but
[11:18] Speaker 1: let's talk about let's talk about some of the stuff here.
[11:20] Speaker 1: What forced them to go into that. It was going
[11:22] Speaker 1: into the second half's trailing by significant margins. And what
[11:28] Speaker 1: I mean by that, people, is when you walk into
[11:30] Speaker 1: a dressing room, right and on one side of the
[11:33] Speaker 1: coin you've got a team. Let's talk about Grand Final
[11:37] Speaker 1: night here before we go through the others. Melbourne storm
[11:39] Speaker 1: a leading by ten points. Ten points is well in
[11:48] Speaker 1: mental toughness, because there's one of two things you can do.
[11:50] Speaker 1: One is you can get out there. You can say, hey, listen,
[11:53] Speaker 1: let's continue playing the same football if we've been doing it,
[11:56] Speaker 1: got as ten points clear, Let's put the clearness through
[11:58] Speaker 1: those pass go out and keep right. The second thought is,
[12:04] Speaker 1: boys that towers to lose, let's complete high. Let's kick
[12:09] Speaker 1: long right are We're going to find a way to
[12:11] Speaker 1: victory here, No silly errors. Now, which one should you do?
[12:15] Speaker 1: Which one?
[12:16] Speaker 2: Which?
[12:16] Speaker 1: Which of those A or B do you do? To win?
[12:20] Speaker 1: You do a whatever? Take the meal that took you
[12:23] Speaker 1: to the top of the hill. Stay on that meal.
[12:25] Speaker 1: Don't play expensive football. Be willing to take risks back
[12:28] Speaker 1: your defense to defend the errors that you might make
[12:31] Speaker 1: and pursue for points. Keep playing football. But most teams
[12:37] Speaker 1: do B. Most teams get out there and do B.
[12:40] Speaker 1: And if you look through you know that there's been
[12:43] Speaker 1: history grand finals, there's been teams that, oftentimes led by
[12:46] Speaker 1: significant margins, got rand down. Good beat eighty nine Grand Final.
[12:50] Speaker 1: It was balmains at halftime twelve to two over the Raiders.
[12:53] Speaker 1: And second half they get out there and they try
[12:56] Speaker 1: to fend their way to victory. You know, the coach
[12:58] Speaker 1: takes Paul Syrian Rachel Field twenty to go to trial
[13:01] Speaker 1: to tackle their way to victory. They get ran down
[13:03] Speaker 1: in the second half, they score two points. Even our
[13:06] Speaker 1: grand final, we're behind by eight points. I don't know
[13:10] Speaker 1: what happened in the manly shep, but now shed we
[13:11] Speaker 1: had no choice but to play open football. Let's just
[13:14] Speaker 1: get out there and get after him. We're we're chasing points.
[13:17] Speaker 1: We've got to get out. Unless we play aggressive football
[13:19] Speaker 1: a chance our hand, we're not going to win this. Yeah,
[13:22] Speaker 1: second half mainly score no points. We come back and
[13:25] Speaker 1: win the game.
[13:26] Speaker 2: It's why people, it's why it's so hard for teams
[13:28] Speaker 2: to go back to back because you've got no one
[13:30] Speaker 2: to chase apart from yourself. Like when you it's like
[13:33] Speaker 2: a marathon. It's like when you're down in a game,
[13:35] Speaker 2: you have nothing to lose because you're not the bloke
[13:38] Speaker 2: who's leading. You're not at the front of the pack
[13:39] Speaker 2: when you have something to chase, if you're chasing points
[13:42] Speaker 2: or you're chasing people like next to they were chasing
[13:45] Speaker 2: the Broncos to beat them. They're the standard. You have
[13:48] Speaker 2: something you have a real motivation to get to, whereas
[13:52] Speaker 2: if you're leading, if you're the best team in the
[13:53] Speaker 2: comp there's nothing in front of you. You don't know
[13:56] Speaker 2: what the people behind you were doing. So the only
[13:58] Speaker 2: thing that really is the only thing that sabotage is
[14:02] Speaker 2: you is yourself because you need to be able to
[14:04] Speaker 2: find motivation to get yourself going.
[14:06] Speaker 1: And I've been in I've been in a couple of
[14:10] Speaker 1: finals series where we were head by sixteen points against
[14:13] Speaker 1: the Roosters in our sheds until it happened in our sheds.
[14:17] Speaker 1: In our sheds, the coach was like, mate, we are
[14:22] Speaker 1: this close to being in a Grand Final. We are
[14:24] Speaker 1: that close. Okay, let's get out there. Let's not do
[14:28] Speaker 1: anything stupid, no silly passes. It not to play two sideways.
[14:33] Speaker 1: There's a nervousness that just ripple through the dressing room. Meanwhile,
[14:36] Speaker 1: Fletch tells me in the other dressing room, their coach,
[14:39] Speaker 1: Graham Murray, the Rooster's coach, pulled a computer out and said,
[14:44] Speaker 1: have a look at this boys. And right on halftime
[14:46] Speaker 1: we scored and our winger Darren Albert went up and
[14:49] Speaker 1: kissed the camera and he said, he's taken the piece
[14:52] Speaker 1: out of you blokes. What are we going to do?
[14:54] Speaker 1: And they just went out there and went full blast. Meanwhile,
[14:57] Speaker 1: we tried to defend our way to victory. So I've
[14:59] Speaker 1: looked through the final series. Right, let's go Raiders first,
[15:03] Speaker 1: first of the finals. They're behind twenty eight to twelve.
[15:07] Speaker 1: See steam points behind, were twenty minutes to go. They've
[15:10] Speaker 1: got no choice. They've got to open up and play football,
[15:12] Speaker 1: which they did. Meanwhile, the Raiders, they suddenly just stopped
[15:15] Speaker 1: playing football to defend their lead. Broncos storm home. Raiders
[15:20] Speaker 1: don't score another point in Let's go to the Penrith game.
[15:24] Speaker 1: Similarly again, Penrith game down fourteen at half time. Now
[15:30] Speaker 1: Penrith after halftime They've got a few opportunities to go
[15:33] Speaker 1: up twenty mil, but the Broncos defend. They're able to
[15:35] Speaker 1: defend that and push them off their line. Suddenly Panthers
[15:39] Speaker 1: tighten up, Broncos go on the offensive and they run
[15:42] Speaker 1: them down. Panthers don't score another point after halftime, and
[15:46] Speaker 1: then the big one again ten points down at half time,
[15:50] Speaker 1: broncoes up the ending in the second half because they've
[15:52] Speaker 1: got no point. They've got there's no other way. They've
[15:56] Speaker 1: got to play that way. Storm create chances in the
[15:59] Speaker 1: second up, but the Broncos high energy attack overwhelms them.
[16:03] Speaker 1: Broncos win. Storm don't score another point after halftime. Wow,
[16:07] Speaker 1: that's that's that. That is purely. That is purely, in
[16:13] Speaker 1: my opinion, that is mental.
[16:16] Speaker 2: That's mental. And I think the biggest, the biggest point
[16:18] Speaker 2: in that match, which would have I think broke Broncos
[16:23] Speaker 2: mentally was that second that that first set out of
[16:26] Speaker 2: the second half when they come out, Munster puts a
[16:29] Speaker 2: little kick in two com with Cametha he's about to score,
[16:32] Speaker 2: which I think would have been the match, like Blower
[16:35] Speaker 2: would have, just would have just taken it to a
[16:37] Speaker 2: level where Broncos mentally, I don't think would have had
[16:40] Speaker 2: the belief that they still did only been two tries down,
[16:43] Speaker 2: But Reece Walsh comes up with one of the greatest
[16:45] Speaker 2: christ try savers on a bloke thirty kilos bigger just
[16:48] Speaker 2: slips out of to his fingers.
[16:50] Speaker 1: Incredible, incredible to talk about Walsh's performance. You know, there
[16:55] Speaker 1: is a thing they call recency bias, where you know,
[16:58] Speaker 1: each year this we see a great Grand Final. That
[17:00] Speaker 1: is that the greatest Grand Final of all time? You
[17:02] Speaker 1: know might happen next to you again. But coops, Reese
[17:06] Speaker 1: Walsh is the new Grand Final King. That is the
[17:08] Speaker 1: best performance I've ever seen a Grand from mate.
[17:11] Speaker 2: You think of Nathan Cleary a couple of years ago
[17:13] Speaker 2: against the Broncos. That was a great clutch. I think
[17:16] Speaker 2: that's the greatest clutch performance under pressure in a time
[17:19] Speaker 2: when they need it. Unbelievable. But Reese Walsh's Grand Final
[17:23] Speaker 2: performance that is the best I've ever seen. And people
[17:25] Speaker 2: saying the stats a try three try assist those stats
[17:29] Speaker 2: on the stats book, they're unbelievable of themselves. You get
[17:31] Speaker 2: me out of the match in any game if you
[17:32] Speaker 2: put those stats up. But what he did with the
[17:36] Speaker 2: three try savers those three trial. I was in the
[17:39] Speaker 2: Melbourne sheds after the game talking to some of the
[17:41] Speaker 2: people in there, some of the coaches, and they were like,
[17:43] Speaker 2: he saved three tries, three clean tries, two that were
[17:48] Speaker 2: certain tries if he wasn't there with two is one
[17:50] Speaker 2: and then Ryan Pappenhausen's won off the scrum if he's
[17:53] Speaker 2: not there, like they they're over untouched. And then that
[17:56] Speaker 2: other play with two minutes ago, Ellie Cottowa goes through
[17:59] Speaker 2: and perhaps has scored that try in countless games. His
[18:03] Speaker 2: whole career is one of the greatest supporting fullbacks. He's quick.
[18:06] Speaker 2: No one really mows him down while she head fakes,
[18:09] Speaker 2: Ellie balks him and then just has a huge gamble
[18:13] Speaker 2: and just smokes paps.
[18:15] Speaker 1: He bullshited Ellie very beautifully.
[18:17] Speaker 2: And another thing you see, and that the only reason
[18:19] Speaker 2: I say that one wasn't a certain try is because
[18:23] Speaker 2: one of the great pictures the Broncos line, particularly pain Hass,
[18:29] Speaker 2: pain hass, after playing huge minutes being had a massive year.
[18:34] Speaker 2: I reckon even if while she doesn't do that, I
[18:36] Speaker 2: think pain gets him. You can see pain coming from
[18:39] Speaker 2: a mile. He instinctually just starts heading back in case
[18:42] Speaker 2: they make a line break, which is amazing instincts for
[18:45] Speaker 2: a front rower. And he was mumm back and I
[18:48] Speaker 2: reckon he gets him as well. But plays like that
[18:50] Speaker 2: are what wins grand finals. The tries you save are
[18:53] Speaker 2: what wins Grand finals.
[18:54] Speaker 1: And for people there like for Reese, what he did there.
[18:59] Speaker 1: When you're bull should player act like you in to
[19:01] Speaker 1: go to and then skip to the sport player? There
[19:03] Speaker 1: is a there is just a micro there's just a
[19:06] Speaker 1: tiny little opening for you. And that tiny opening is
[19:10] Speaker 1: when the player with the ball in his hands at're
[19:12] Speaker 1: bullshitting just glances to throw the pass. That is that
[19:15] Speaker 1: micro second that you need to go and then release.
[19:19] Speaker 1: And he did it just perfectly.
[19:20] Speaker 2: But that's his instincts. Like I got another great example
[19:24] Speaker 2: on some of his foot instincts, that stuff that you
[19:27] Speaker 2: cannot coach a footballer. That stuff that like when you
[19:30] Speaker 2: see players take these amazing instinctual intercepts, like that stuff
[19:34] Speaker 2: that is just naturally ingrained and from playing in the backyard,
[19:37] Speaker 2: from playing footy locally when you're a kid. While she
[19:41] Speaker 2: has some of the greatest football instincts, which is it's
[19:45] Speaker 2: not in any coaching system. Coaches actually don't want you
[19:47] Speaker 2: to do that. Like imagine his box and when he
[19:50] Speaker 2: reviews it, he would look at it and go, in
[19:52] Speaker 2: our system, I don't want my players actually gambling and
[19:57] Speaker 2: doing that because you always want to hold until the
[19:59] Speaker 2: balls out of their hand. But while she takes a gamble,
[20:02] Speaker 2: and if that doesn't come off, he probably gets sprayed
[20:04] Speaker 2: by his coach for doing that because it's not in
[20:06] Speaker 2: their system. But when it comes off, it's an instinct
[20:10] Speaker 2: that you want your players to back because that's that's
[20:13] Speaker 2: something you cannot coach and it's something that the opposition
[20:15] Speaker 2: aren't expecting him to do.
[20:16] Speaker 1: Great great players put more to the point, great leaders
[20:20] Speaker 1: in life know where to break the rules. Yeah, they
[20:23] Speaker 1: know you just can't. There's there's two types of players
[20:27] Speaker 1: coop who get a who get a coach sacked? Right?
[20:30] Speaker 1: Two types of players. The first one is the player
[20:34] Speaker 1: who does nothing that the coach wants. Everything the coach
[20:37] Speaker 1: tells him to do, he doesn't do. That gets the
[20:39] Speaker 1: coach sacked. But the other one who gets coach sacked
[20:43] Speaker 1: is the one that only does what the coach tells
[20:45] Speaker 1: him to do. Yeah, the other ones get sacked. And
[20:47] Speaker 1: that's where coaches some coaches don't understand, don't micro coach
[20:51] Speaker 1: someone sometimes, don't get a player just because it doesn't
[20:54] Speaker 1: come off. Don't pull him back, because these guys can
[20:56] Speaker 1: come up with a situation and win and win the game.
[20:58] Speaker 1: I remember we're playing the Broncos one day and Joey
[21:01] Speaker 1: got the ball, put his hand around the back of
[21:04] Speaker 1: Alfie and just threw it over the two people and
[21:07] Speaker 1: we got it in scored, and the coach, David Wait went,
[21:09] Speaker 1: what a play? What were you thinking? Like? What did
[21:12] Speaker 1: you see? And Joey goes, I don't know, I just
[21:15] Speaker 1: I don't know. It just it just happened, and he goes, no, no, no,
[21:18] Speaker 1: But when you got what what happened? Why did you
[21:21] Speaker 1: go round out to Delf just I don't know. I
[21:24] Speaker 1: just I don't know. I just did it. And the
[21:26] Speaker 1: coach found that hard to believe. But that's that's all
[21:29] Speaker 1: great players do, and.
[21:30] Speaker 2: Coaches want to understand because they want to teach other
[21:34] Speaker 2: players like they want to be able to go, how
[21:35] Speaker 2: do I get that out of some of the other
[21:37] Speaker 2: players that I know have that ability? But how do
[21:40] Speaker 2: I encourage that? That stuff is just that? And that's
[21:43] Speaker 2: why a bloke like Joey who a bloke like Cameron Munster.
[21:48] Speaker 2: Some of these guys, they actually find it very hard
[21:51] Speaker 2: if you're a young player in that squad and you
[21:52] Speaker 2: go up two months or say, oh, what were you
[21:54] Speaker 2: seeing there? What we're seeing now? I was very much
[21:56] Speaker 2: like that because I love to understand the game. I
[21:58] Speaker 2: love to understand what he was thinking, so I could
[22:00] Speaker 2: write it down, I could implement it, I could try
[22:03] Speaker 2: to adapt that into other aspects of the game, because
[22:05] Speaker 2: I wasn't someone that could just do something frequently without
[22:08] Speaker 2: even knowing what it was, and here we go, I
[22:10] Speaker 2: don't know, here we go, I don't know. I just
[22:13] Speaker 2: I saw he was tired, and then my instincts just
[22:16] Speaker 2: took over. Like it's almost like autopilot. So they've been
[22:19] Speaker 2: playing footy for so long in the backyard that they
[22:23] Speaker 2: just their brain. It's like they just shut off and
[22:26] Speaker 2: they're just like completely an autopilot and they just do
[22:28] Speaker 2: things that other people can't.
[22:29] Speaker 1: They just back their instincts. A lot of people have
[22:32] Speaker 1: got this going into the game with that, you know,
[22:35] Speaker 1: playing a lot of football. We play a lot of
[22:37] Speaker 1: football as a kid mate. A lot of people could
[22:38] Speaker 1: carry those natural instincts into their careers, but at the
[22:42] Speaker 1: top level they won't use them. They choke on a
[22:44] Speaker 1: little bit where those guys Blacelott, Munster and Reese Walsh
[22:48] Speaker 1: trust their natural instincts and I'd just keep going with it.
[22:51] Speaker 1: Reese Wash Coup, did you think that the Melbourne would
[22:54] Speaker 1: be able to shut him down? Because if there's one
[22:56] Speaker 1: team of the competition that's proven, I reckon the last
[22:59] Speaker 1: ten to fifteen years they were able to shut down
[23:02] Speaker 1: players on a red hot run, it's Melbourne. I think
[23:04] Speaker 1: about Jared Haynes in two thousand and nine. They're able
[23:06] Speaker 1: to do it. Ben Barber Benny Barber twenty twelve, and
[23:09] Speaker 1: I thought in myself, Man, if this is a side that
[23:11] Speaker 1: can shut Rees down, it's Melbourne. But the fact that
[23:14] Speaker 1: you're on the biggest stage against Melbourne makes it even
[23:17] Speaker 1: more freaking.
[23:19] Speaker 2: And I know from being their first hand on Grand
[23:21] Speaker 2: Final week how much work they put into the key player.
[23:24] Speaker 2: I know how much video, how much the boys were
[23:29] Speaker 2: drilled in into how to shut down Rees Walz. They
[23:32] Speaker 2: would have been looking at Gainst when he hasn't played
[23:34] Speaker 2: his best, where he makes his errors. I know they
[23:36] Speaker 2: would have had such a big plan, But Reese is
[23:40] Speaker 2: that instinctually good and they were getting him quick play
[23:44] Speaker 2: the balls and at the right time when Melbourne a
[23:46] Speaker 2: little bit fatigued, he just could not be stopped like
[23:49] Speaker 2: he's so strong. The best part about Brisbane is and
[23:54] Speaker 2: I'm going to talk about Melbourne in a second as well,
[23:56] Speaker 2: but Brisbane are so good off the cuff at lib
[24:00] Speaker 2: and it's what Melbourne. They have a better ability than
[24:04] Speaker 2: Melbourne in that sense. Melbourne well drilled, detailed. They scored
[24:08] Speaker 2: off some really nice, well executed shapes. But look at
[24:12] Speaker 2: all a Brisbane tries. They come off quick play the
[24:15] Speaker 2: balls and then their ability to add lib and just
[24:18] Speaker 2: get the ball to the space to the right man
[24:20] Speaker 2: and do it. The best thing I saw at the
[24:23] Speaker 2: game and I saw this I was watching this live.
[24:25] Speaker 2: They had this big ship. This is when Reese whal scored,
[24:27] Speaker 2: had this big shift to the right hand side ready
[24:30] Speaker 2: Tyson Smoothie gets it. The a defender comes off a
[24:33] Speaker 2: bit sideways to put pressure on him. He plays inside
[24:35] Speaker 2: to Kobe Heathering to a quick play the ball for
[24:37] Speaker 2: him and then they still had the same shape ready
[24:41] Speaker 2: to go on the right side. Smoothie was calling it
[24:43] Speaker 2: literally as Smoothie passed inside of Kobe Heatherington Reesewols was
[24:48] Speaker 2: watching the ruck, knowing it was going to be quick.
[24:50] Speaker 2: He just leaves that edge and just starts swings about
[24:53] Speaker 2: thirty meters, comes over to the left hand side overcalls
[24:57] Speaker 2: it to Corey Paiks to give it to him. Just
[25:00] Speaker 2: Chargers uses his gord given athletic ability, speed and power
[25:05] Speaker 2: inside it beats Trentleyero beats Alec McDonald. I think it
[25:09] Speaker 2: was fens Off, Ryan Papenhausen and scores writer. I thought
[25:13] Speaker 2: when I watched that live, I thought that was nearly
[25:15] Speaker 2: one of the greatest like tries, that is, like based
[25:19] Speaker 2: off the cuff. His reaction straight away go boom, and
[25:22] Speaker 2: then to not even think and just go and react
[25:25] Speaker 2: and get the footy and go under the post. I
[25:26] Speaker 2: was I was blinding.
[25:27] Speaker 1: And the people he beat too along the way coups
[25:29] Speaker 1: and and I didn't realize until I watched the game
[25:32] Speaker 1: on second look where he came from. I thought he
[25:35] Speaker 1: must have been sitting behind the ruck. And when k
[25:37] Speaker 1: when Tyson's move, did a little clever little ball on
[25:39] Speaker 1: the inside to put the dent in the line, I
[25:42] Speaker 1: thought he was just coming from behind the behind the run.
[25:45] Speaker 1: Then as you said, he came swinging from the open
[25:48] Speaker 1: side and around. Have that to have that instinct and
[25:53] Speaker 1: or is it vision to go that's where the space
[25:56] Speaker 1: is going to be? Is freaking It is a mixture instinct,
[26:00] Speaker 1: but it's also football education as well.
[26:02] Speaker 2: Yeah, it's your IQ. The only other player who I
[26:05] Speaker 2: saw that was the best at it as well, Tom Troyvich.
[26:09] Speaker 2: Turbo used to be able to just even before the
[26:13] Speaker 2: player had been tackled. He would know when it was
[26:16] Speaker 2: He was able to predict when it was going to
[26:18] Speaker 2: be a really quick play the ball, and he'd know
[26:19] Speaker 2: exactly where to be to get the space and used
[26:22] Speaker 2: to see it twenty twenty one he did it. But
[26:24] Speaker 2: even in twenty twenty three when I was there, he
[26:26] Speaker 2: was doing it, particularly at training, where he would just
[26:29] Speaker 2: be on the end of shape, on the end of shape,
[26:30] Speaker 2: see something, scrap everything, he'd overcall and he would just
[26:35] Speaker 2: get right foot on the adline and just it' alwa
[26:38] Speaker 2: just charged straight over the top of a fatiguing defender.
[26:41] Speaker 2: And Turbo's big, He's bigger than whal She in that sense,
[26:43] Speaker 2: he could actually run over the top of someone. That's
[26:46] Speaker 2: what made Walsh. She's so much more impressive because he
[26:48] Speaker 2: went straight through the middle beat about three.
[26:50] Speaker 1: Blokes and how many times we said in the podcast
[26:52] Speaker 1: in the modern game with the six again rules and
[26:55] Speaker 1: the fatigue in the middle, that's where the space is
[26:58] Speaker 1: straight over the event behind the rucks, particularly for those
[27:01] Speaker 1: quick blokes like Turbo and Blokesteal, smaller blokes, you know
[27:05] Speaker 1: that we're seeing in the game now, like you know,
[27:07] Speaker 1: even like having a Trey Fuller's an example, right, And
[27:10] Speaker 1: I'm not comparing Trey Fuller to Reese Walsh, but Trey's
[27:13] Speaker 1: got the ability to do remarkable things and he knows
[27:16] Speaker 1: where the space is behind the ruck That's where the space.
[27:19] Speaker 2: It is starting to reward instinctual players the game, which
[27:22] Speaker 2: is what you want because Trey Fuller and debuted for
[27:25] Speaker 2: he debuted like older than most, but he was doing
[27:28] Speaker 2: that stuff in the Queensland Cup for years where the
[27:32] Speaker 2: ruckie is quite quick and it rewards instinctual players, and
[27:35] Speaker 2: it's good to see him starting to get Like the
[27:36] Speaker 2: game six again, it is starting to bring smaller and
[27:40] Speaker 2: less people who are just educated on shape.
[27:43] Speaker 1: That's bringing the stars to the four. That's why these
[27:46] Speaker 1: that's why the game is so good it coops Tea,
[27:48] Speaker 1: what was Tea? What was crucial in what Reee did
[27:51] Speaker 1: the other night and the Broncos winning the competition at
[27:54] Speaker 1: the back end of the regular season, when Adam Reynolds
[27:56] Speaker 1: wasn't there, Reese Walsh you could see he just went, well,
[28:01] Speaker 1: you know what, if I'm not going to do it,
[28:04] Speaker 1: that's not going to happen. And you start to see
[28:06] Speaker 1: him play on that sweep shape. You see him playing
[28:09] Speaker 1: a lot more first receiver, second receiver's just all over
[28:12] Speaker 1: the place. And you know he when you said just
[28:16] Speaker 1: before about you know the Broncos, the Broncos having the
[28:18] Speaker 1: ability to just play more off the cuff and willing
[28:20] Speaker 1: to take errors. That's Broncos football from the moment they
[28:23] Speaker 1: come into the competition nineteen eighty eight. That's what the
[28:26] Speaker 1: Broncos have been about, and that's they've rediscovered the Broncos DNA.
[28:31] Speaker 1: Reece Walsh has taken him back there. And another reason
[28:34] Speaker 1: that was so vital that period that rene was off
[28:36] Speaker 1: at the back end of the year was it's not
[28:38] Speaker 1: forget the other night. Reno and Ben Hunt didn't finish
[28:42] Speaker 1: the game. So Reese literally as he did at the
[28:45] Speaker 1: back end of the year. He had to carry the
[28:46] Speaker 1: team on his back and was able to do it.
[28:48] Speaker 2: And we spoke about the depth in that squad. The
[28:52] Speaker 2: depth was never been more tested than Sunday Night Ezra Man.
[28:55] Speaker 2: I thought Ezra Man was unbelievable and again energy not
[28:59] Speaker 2: what he did the footy, even it was some of
[29:02] Speaker 2: his kick chases, like chasing some of the kicks, and
[29:05] Speaker 2: then his defense like Ezra can whack. Ezra is a
[29:08] Speaker 2: really strong defender. And then even having someone like Tyan
[29:11] Speaker 2: Tyson Smoothie who ended up coming on when Benny Hunt
[29:15] Speaker 2: got knocked out. But his creativity, like he's going to
[29:20] Speaker 2: the Super League next year, which I thought was he
[29:23] Speaker 2: I thought when he originally signed he was way too
[29:25] Speaker 2: good to be going to the Super League. Now it's
[29:27] Speaker 2: cemented like he's a Premiership player.
[29:29] Speaker 1: I think entice him not to go. Oh, you know
[29:31] Speaker 1: what you just did then, Kurt, you actually said Tyson
[29:34] Speaker 1: like Mike Tyson, you went tython.
[29:36] Speaker 2: Tathan, you didn't.
[29:38] Speaker 1: Hey, Just quickly before we move on the Broncos winning
[29:40] Speaker 1: well dounder Jack Johns. It was brought to our at
[29:43] Speaker 1: Tension from a podcast listener, Jack Johns at the start
[29:47] Speaker 1: of the year predicted the Broncos against the Storm the
[29:50] Speaker 1: Grand Final repeat of two thousand and six, and he
[29:52] Speaker 1: predicted that the Broncos would win. Take about jack.
[29:56] Speaker 3: Thanks to mego yeah, actually yeah, I predicted the I
[29:59] Speaker 3: said repeat after round one we did our predictions that I.
[30:02] Speaker 4: Had an exact repeat of the two thousand and six
[30:05] Speaker 4: Grand Final.
[30:06] Speaker 1: It's a bit.
[30:06] Speaker 3: I was a bit tested, tested a bit through the year.
[30:08] Speaker 3: I don't think that was going to happen, but yeah,
[30:11] Speaker 3: did you.
[30:12] Speaker 5: Son of a bit?
[30:12] Speaker 1: His son of again, I wish I put money on it.
[30:15] Speaker 1: I should have done it.
[30:16] Speaker 2: I wish I put money on it.
[30:17] Speaker 1: Yeah you know what? Oh yeah, okay, this is bad.
[30:20] Speaker 1: I've got two betting accounts, right, so one of the
[30:23] Speaker 1: betting accounts at start of the year when we had that,
[30:26] Speaker 1: you know, when Madge got the job, after we had
[30:28] Speaker 1: that discussion with him here on the podcast. I thought
[30:31] Speaker 1: Madge going there something about him with the moment. He's
[30:33] Speaker 1: not a bit of a hot streak. So why to
[30:35] Speaker 1: crack at the Broncos at eight to one? I guess what,
[30:37] Speaker 1: I forgot my password on the other betting Oh I'm
[30:41] Speaker 1: trying to work out how.
[30:42] Speaker 2: You should be able to ring them up. In the
[30:44] Speaker 2: modern technology, there's like forget your.
[30:46] Speaker 1: Password, it's all sitting there.
[30:48] Speaker 4: Yeah, hopeless.
[30:49] Speaker 2: I saw a bloke he can't get into his crypto
[30:51] Speaker 2: account and he has about he has like one hundred
[30:54] Speaker 2: million or something in that imagine.
[30:55] Speaker 3: I heard about the boat that's got the he lost
[30:57] Speaker 3: his he lost his hard drive, been searching for like
[31:01] Speaker 3: ten years for his old hard drive that had like
[31:03] Speaker 3: a thousand bitcoin on it.
[31:05] Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's what I'm thinking about. Actually, did
[31:08] Speaker 2: you live with that?
[31:08] Speaker 3: He bought the dump that he's rubbish went to. He
[31:11] Speaker 3: bought it so he could go and search it for years.
[31:14] Speaker 5: And still that's do me back on the game for
[31:18] Speaker 5: one set because we're just talking about Sorry Jack, I'll
[31:20] Speaker 5: just turned it down.
[31:22] Speaker 1: So it made his short stint, got his win, got
[31:26] Speaker 1: he's wrap.
[31:26] Speaker 2: He's out short stint straight in ten minutes off the bench.
[31:30] Speaker 2: But we talked about the ad lip of the Broncos,
[31:33] Speaker 2: the ad lib Footye, how good they are at doing
[31:35] Speaker 2: that off the cuff. I thought Melbourne did their strengths
[31:38] Speaker 2: actually really well as well, particularly that first half. You
[31:40] Speaker 2: look at all their tries. Their tries come off some
[31:42] Speaker 2: really well executed shapes. Yeah, some shapes that they knew
[31:45] Speaker 2: were going to come off. A nice little deaf kick
[31:47] Speaker 2: for Eli Katowa, but they brought the line up, nice
[31:50] Speaker 2: kick for him.
[31:51] Speaker 1: He was good.
[31:52] Speaker 2: I thought Ellie wins Clive Churchill if storm winds.
[31:55] Speaker 1: I thought, I still think it's Reese. I still think Reese.
[31:59] Speaker 1: But yeah, I think if you remove Urice Walsh from
[32:04] Speaker 1: and they win the Melbourne Storm, then yeah, I think
[32:06] Speaker 1: Ellie gets it and by far their best mate.
[32:08] Speaker 2: It was unbelieving that first try that they set up.
[32:10] Speaker 2: It was a really nice shift and they found Ellie.
[32:12] Speaker 2: He sort of did a little wrap around to I
[32:16] Speaker 2: think it was hugey tipped onto perhaps when Nick Meane
[32:19] Speaker 2: scored as well, a nice little weaving try. But all
[32:21] Speaker 2: of their shapes were so well executed, so well detailed,
[32:25] Speaker 2: and that the third try he set up one for
[32:27] Speaker 2: will Warbrick where they did a little shape. It's the
[32:30] Speaker 2: old Sam Thiday and State of Origin shape where Jerome
[32:33] Speaker 2: Hughes passes it. Well, it was back in the day.
[32:35] Speaker 2: It was Cooper Crunk to Sam Thriday back inside to
[32:37] Speaker 2: Billy Slater. Yep, that was the shape they were trying
[32:39] Speaker 2: to set up for the outside insight. They team's identity.
[32:43] Speaker 2: Teams defend that enough. They identified it, so the half
[32:46] Speaker 2: rather than go to Elli, stayed on the full back.
[32:49] Speaker 2: Ellie identified that and just zinged it straight out to
[32:51] Speaker 2: Will Warbrick, knowing that the other two were tight, and
[32:54] Speaker 2: then that that is a hard pass and a hard
[32:57] Speaker 2: thing to identify for a back row. Off not mean
[33:00] Speaker 2: lot of back We used to actually try to do
[33:01] Speaker 2: that shape with Felice back in the day, but like Felice,
[33:05] Speaker 2: couldn't couldn't execute it. Hopeless pass. No, but it is
[33:09] Speaker 2: so hard for a back rower who's built like they typically,
[33:13] Speaker 2: they're not built with a vision of halves. They're bigger
[33:15] Speaker 2: and they punch holes. Ellie has got so many strings
[33:19] Speaker 2: to his bow, it's ridiculous.
[33:20] Speaker 1: Before we talk more about Melbourne, Coop and talk about
[33:23] Speaker 1: after the game she went in the sheds and whatnot.
[33:26] Speaker 1: Pat Carrigan hasn't been spoken of a billy at all.
[33:29] Speaker 1: His fresh legs, full lungs after missing the week before,
[33:32] Speaker 1: he was he was fantastic mate, He he was, he
[33:36] Speaker 1: was one. He was one of the very best on
[33:37] Speaker 1: the fields. That was pain and pain just mate. It's
[33:41] Speaker 1: really funny. It shows you how busted he was, right Coop,
[33:44] Speaker 1: how busted he was. He was replaced at the twenty
[33:46] Speaker 1: sixth minute mart which is it's rare got him off
[33:51] Speaker 1: and he went back on the fifty fifth minute and
[33:53] Speaker 1: was unbelievable. Second stint, but that's a fair stint for Pain.
[33:57] Speaker 1: That just shows me of how how he's been carrying injuries,
[34:01] Speaker 1: the load he's been carrying, and that Madge recognized that
[34:05] Speaker 1: and just reduced his minutes for more impact.
[34:07] Speaker 2: I like that, and I've always been a believer in
[34:10] Speaker 2: even what the Gold Coast do with like Tino Fasti.
[34:13] Speaker 2: The I don't want to say the worst clubs, but
[34:17] Speaker 2: the clubs who are very reliant on one or two,
[34:21] Speaker 2: like big name forwards, they play them for too long
[34:24] Speaker 2: and they're become ineffective. I think this year Madg has
[34:27] Speaker 2: been really good for Pain in Like, Mate, I don't
[34:30] Speaker 2: need seventy eighty minutes out of you. I'm going to
[34:32] Speaker 2: cut your time back to say, you know, max sixty minutes.
[34:35] Speaker 2: But what you're going to do in that sixty minutes
[34:38] Speaker 2: for me is you're going to be as fresh as
[34:40] Speaker 2: possible and you're going to be high energy. And I
[34:43] Speaker 2: want more impact from you rather than just a consistent
[34:47] Speaker 2: port Gallon performance, because Gal will get out of there.
[34:49] Speaker 2: He'd make fifty or sixty tackles and he would grind
[34:52] Speaker 2: out like as much work as possible, like in the
[34:55] Speaker 2: modern game. And when you have those big power athletes
[34:57] Speaker 2: like Tino, like Pain, I don't think you eat him
[35:00] Speaker 2: for even if they can, you don't need him for
[35:02] Speaker 2: that long.
[35:02] Speaker 1: Coop hats off to blokes who make fifty and sixty
[35:05] Speaker 1: chatholate games that they are incredible, but then they're not
[35:08] Speaker 1: explosive players. Yeah, and like paying second stints this year
[35:14] Speaker 1: have been monumental. Been one of the secrets, one of
[35:16] Speaker 1: their secret sources made him coming off. I thought he
[35:19] Speaker 1: was fantastic and I thought, Zavie Wilson, hasn't he been
[35:23] Speaker 1: a fine Yeah, I thought, I thought, coming back from
[35:25] Speaker 1: his injury, he's been fantastic and.
[35:27] Speaker 2: He's been awesome, and he's making his Kiwi's debut as well.
[35:30] Speaker 2: It could have been in that New Zealand side, so
[35:32] Speaker 2: I shout out to him.
[35:33] Speaker 1: We're going to talk about the other at football in
[35:35] Speaker 1: a second. But Coop had with the boys in the
[35:36] Speaker 1: sheds after the game.
[35:38] Speaker 2: It was it was it was sad, like I was
[35:40] Speaker 2: in there last year as well, had a arm but
[35:44] Speaker 2: last year, I think, you know, getting beat by Penrith.
[35:47] Speaker 2: This year really hurt, like to go back to back losses.
[35:51] Speaker 2: And I've been in the I've been a part of
[35:53] Speaker 2: playing squads in twenty eighteen against the Roosters when we
[35:57] Speaker 2: got beat and that was. When you're in a playing squad,
[36:01] Speaker 2: it's it's hard to gauge like losses suck because you're
[36:04] Speaker 2: training all year to get to this moment, you know,
[36:05] Speaker 2: all the work that people got into. And then I've
[36:07] Speaker 2: been a part of winning ones as well, But I
[36:10] Speaker 2: actually found this one the hardest one because when you're
[36:14] Speaker 2: not in the playing squad and you see how gut
[36:18] Speaker 2: wrenching the boys are hurting, like what do you say?
[36:21] Speaker 2: Like it was, it was actually really tough in it,
[36:23] Speaker 2: and it was the boys were I haven't seen the
[36:25] Speaker 2: boys that shattered in a while, Like it was. It
[36:28] Speaker 2: was very sad vibes in there. I actually found like
[36:31] Speaker 2: I did find it hard to talk to a few
[36:33] Speaker 2: of the boys straight after, just because like you don't
[36:37] Speaker 2: know whether you want to lift the spirits up or
[36:40] Speaker 2: you don't know whether you want to just keep them, like,
[36:42] Speaker 2: just talk to them about how shit the feeling is.
[36:45] Speaker 1: Well. I was in the I was doing a little
[36:47] Speaker 1: bit of halves coaching of the Melbourne Storm. Was in
[36:49] Speaker 1: the sheds aft think I'd be forty nil by manly.
[36:52] Speaker 1: What was that? Probably a little somber, Yeah, I imagine
[36:55] Speaker 1: fair to say they're just sort of hiding in the
[36:57] Speaker 1: corner a little bit avoiding belly ache. Yeah, yeah, how
[37:02] Speaker 1: were they because oftentimes players are absolutely heartbroken and the
[37:07] Speaker 1: heartbreak doesn't go away, it just gets it just getting
[37:09] Speaker 1: gets numbed when you start to have a few beers.
[37:11] Speaker 1: How were they back to the hotel having a few drinks?
[37:14] Speaker 2: Like still still pretty sad, Like I wouldn't say that,
[37:19] Speaker 2: like we went overly hard, Like I sort of just
[37:21] Speaker 2: sat there and I just said to when you are
[37:23] Speaker 2: ready to go to bed, I'll sit here and drink
[37:25] Speaker 2: with his too. He's ready to go to bed. Really,
[37:26] Speaker 2: because there was they had a little bit of a
[37:29] Speaker 2: post GF a vent on with a lot of the
[37:33] Speaker 2: friends and family and sponsors and whatnot. But I mean
[37:36] Speaker 2: it was very much like throughout there'd be there'd be
[37:39] Speaker 2: there'd be half an hour spurts of like you know,
[37:41] Speaker 2: having a laugh, having a laugh, and then the next
[37:43] Speaker 2: half an hour one of the boys go we lost that,
[37:46] Speaker 2: man like, and then they relive those moments back over
[37:48] Speaker 2: in your head. I do not miss that feeling of
[37:51] Speaker 2: like you're reliving one or two movements where you think,
[37:54] Speaker 2: oh I could have done that, or like oh we
[37:55] Speaker 2: had them here but we didn't do that, like yeah,
[37:59] Speaker 2: so yeah, like to lose it. I was in the
[38:02] Speaker 2: uber home, I was, I was sitting there and I
[38:04] Speaker 2: was thinking, we don't reward like, we don't really reward
[38:08] Speaker 2: silver medals in in team sports, like in teen sports.
[38:11] Speaker 2: We don't like either your win or you're like basically
[38:14] Speaker 2: your wooden spoon, like it doesn't really matter.
[38:16] Speaker 1: In fact, they hit sometimes they get more maligned than
[38:19] Speaker 1: the teams who lose the qualifiers.
[38:22] Speaker 2: Well, I was thinking, like, would you rather than get
[38:25] Speaker 2: beat in a prelim because you still had a great
[38:27] Speaker 2: year than getting beat a grand final? Like not many
[38:30] Speaker 2: people can say they've played in two Grand finals. I
[38:33] Speaker 2: know they've gone back to back losses, but like the
[38:37] Speaker 2: hurt and the heartache, like there is there is not
[38:39] Speaker 2: much There is not much reward for getting there and
[38:42] Speaker 2: getting silver anymore, like.
[38:44] Speaker 1: Those of the week itself, leading in I mean, it's
[38:45] Speaker 1: a great week, leading in all ccelerations. But you're right
[38:48] Speaker 1: how it finishes, like I imagine, it tends to be
[38:50] Speaker 1: the thing you remember, like.
[38:51] Speaker 2: Heindi, Hendy played in one or two Grand finals. I
[38:54] Speaker 2: played in two, and I'd like, I wonder in hindsight,
[38:59] Speaker 2: like it must be. I was actually feeling a honding
[39:01] Speaker 2: because I was going, everyone takes a piece out of
[39:03] Speaker 2: hand if you not winning one. But seeing the boys
[39:06] Speaker 2: after that game lose to lose to like it must
[39:10] Speaker 2: be tough. I wonder if Hendi ever wishes like he
[39:12] Speaker 2: just didn't make one full start.
[39:13] Speaker 1: Heindi says all the time, says to Flitch and I
[39:16] Speaker 1: and he said, I'm not kidding, he said, I actually
[39:18] Speaker 1: just I can't stand ground. Final day, he said, when
[39:21] Speaker 1: they hand out the trophy at the end, he said,
[39:22] Speaker 1: I leave the room anyway. Fletch, a bloke Fletcher a
[39:26] Speaker 1: made of Fletchers, took a photo at a pub where
[39:30] Speaker 1: it was pumping and as they were giving the traphic,
[39:33] Speaker 1: he took a photo of Heindi, HENDI looks so sad.
[39:36] Speaker 2: Oh I looked so sad.
[39:38] Speaker 1: All these people are jumping around having a great time
[39:40] Speaker 1: for he's just sitting there.
[39:42] Speaker 2: It's funny the person smoke packets postgame, like we jumped up.
[39:46] Speaker 2: We jumped on like a bus back to the hotel,
[39:48] Speaker 2: and some of the Broncos families were walking to the
[39:51] Speaker 2: but like their buses was picking up from the same spot,
[39:53] Speaker 2: which like timing wasn't perfect at that time. But I
[39:56] Speaker 2: was walking back with Billy's brothers, Jet and Harry Harry,
[40:00] Speaker 2: and because I played with Billy so I know the
[40:02] Speaker 2: family quite well, and I'm walking back and Harry was
[40:06] Speaker 2: that excited baite. Harry was screaming and he's walking surrounded
[40:11] Speaker 2: by like fifty of the Melbourne Storm friends and family,
[40:14] Speaker 2: and he's going, we did it, Coops, we did it.
[40:18] Speaker 2: And I'm going don't say we did it, because I'm
[40:21] Speaker 2: going back to.
[40:21] Speaker 1: The Melbourne going, oh god.
[40:24] Speaker 2: I remember Harry's mother and dad were looking back on
[40:26] Speaker 2: who's this one cup and I was like, that's not me,
[40:28] Speaker 2: it's Harry. But yeah, like I can't imagine the celebrations
[40:33] Speaker 2: that they're having up there at the moment.
[40:35] Speaker 1: Deserve what what? What a year for prisoner sporting teams
[40:40] Speaker 1: and the AFL? What else was there? There was something
[40:44] Speaker 1: else as well. They wont Someone pointed them all out
[40:46] Speaker 1: to me. It's just you remember Bulldog reached in the
[40:48] Speaker 1: middle of the year. They won the Origin as well
[40:50] Speaker 1: and Bulldog of the Year just coming. What a terrible
[40:53] Speaker 1: what a terrible year for sporting teams just went boom
[40:55] Speaker 1: boom boom boom boom.
[40:56] Speaker 2: Yeah, Queen he goes in Queensland Cowboys. Yeah he started
[40:59] Speaker 2: rat like hammering all the Queensland and.
[41:01] Speaker 1: Yeah, Bullog's curse, the Bullogrichy curse.
[41:05] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I know the Queensland side. Instead of tell
[41:09] Speaker 2: you what I think, it'd be a great time, to
[41:11] Speaker 2: a great week to be a Queenslander up there. It'd
[41:13] Speaker 2: be fun. I can't imagine Reecee Walsh because he was
[41:17] Speaker 2: a star before, right like while she was a big
[41:19] Speaker 2: star before. Obviously people loved him, not just for his
[41:23] Speaker 2: football ability, but like his swagger, his energy, his good
[41:27] Speaker 2: looking young blokes. A lot of a lot of girls
[41:28] Speaker 2: love him. So he's had a big following on social
[41:31] Speaker 2: media and whatnot. But up there now, after that performance,
[41:34] Speaker 2: the best game he's ever played, he will never buy
[41:39] Speaker 2: a beer in Queensland again. I will guarantee that.
[41:41] Speaker 1: What he's in for this next twelve months, Like I mean,
[41:45] Speaker 1: it was rees Mania anywhere it went anyway, Like you
[41:48] Speaker 1: know when they went to Newcastle for that week on
[41:50] Speaker 1: every training session the ground so they went was just
[41:52] Speaker 1: they packed sold out nights fans just to suit most
[41:55] Speaker 1: of them. See Reese Walsh And so what's going to
[41:57] Speaker 1: be next year? Like, because he's just gone to another
[41:59] Speaker 1: straight fear again. I can't wait to see the reaction
[42:02] Speaker 1: he gets in England. He will make a big splash
[42:05] Speaker 1: over there.
[42:06] Speaker 2: I not not that I worry for him or anything,
[42:08] Speaker 2: but I hope he's. I hope he's because a lot
[42:11] Speaker 2: of people will start just just suckling at the teat
[42:15] Speaker 2: of Reese Walsh. I really hope that he gets because
[42:18] Speaker 2: the only other comparison I can give to that sort
[42:20] Speaker 2: of stardom was Cameron Munster twenty twenty gf into probably
[42:25] Speaker 2: the greatest Origin performance series ever. Coops and Money. Money
[42:29] Speaker 2: really struggled the next year. He enjoyed himself over the
[42:32] Speaker 2: off season, but he really struggled. I think mentally really
[42:34] Speaker 2: struggled the next year as well. Given he's like his
[42:37] Speaker 2: profile went through the roof, flow absolutely through. He still
[42:40] Speaker 2: gets brought beers over there from his twenty twenty COVID
[42:42] Speaker 2: performance and.
[42:43] Speaker 1: I think even but I think money would say, I reckon,
[42:46] Speaker 1: it's only about half what Ree is going to get.
[42:48] Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I think about half who I compare it to.
[42:53] Speaker 1: I think what's waiting for him this year as far
[42:55] Speaker 1: as national stardom probably warning.
[43:00] Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what I mean, it's gone past regular
[43:02] Speaker 2: because Nathan Clear has been huge profile as well, But
[43:05] Speaker 2: this is another level again because there's.
[43:08] Speaker 1: More than football. That's his swagger and attitude, that's his
[43:11] Speaker 1: rock star looks, all those things people just love. But yeah,
[43:16] Speaker 1: your spot on. I think the Broncos be there now,
[43:18] Speaker 1: going right up. We're going to just put some things
[43:19] Speaker 1: in place because this is going to start to get
[43:22] Speaker 1: fucking crazy.
[43:22] Speaker 2: Well, I reckon it's more his manager, because I think
[43:24] Speaker 2: Broncos are going to want to They're going to want
[43:26] Speaker 2: to cash in on whilst she's brand a little bit.
[43:29] Speaker 2: I think it needs to be a little bit of
[43:31] Speaker 2: like he needs to get looked after by his management
[43:34] Speaker 2: and like helping him with the right direction. But also
[43:37] Speaker 2: like if I'm him, you'd want him almost bumping blokes
[43:40] Speaker 2: like Munster and be like mate, like a bit of
[43:43] Speaker 2: advice from leaders have been there in that similar position before.
[43:46] Speaker 1: But for the Broncos, it's about like every way, every
[43:49] Speaker 1: away game, like getting off the bus. It's like it's
[43:52] Speaker 1: sports version of boodle mania. So Jack, oh, Jack, I.
[43:56] Speaker 3: Was just going to say too, did you see that
[43:59] Speaker 3: when the stock market opened on Monday or Tuesday? I
[44:03] Speaker 3: can't tell because of the long weekend, but see the
[44:05] Speaker 3: Broncos share price went up by fifty cents incredible after
[44:09] Speaker 3: the win.
[44:09] Speaker 1: So it's it's worth one hundred and eighty million now.
[44:12] Speaker 5: The club, it was, yeah, well they're they're they're the
[44:15] Speaker 5: biggest brand in NRL. They've got like they smash everyone
[44:19] Speaker 5: out of the water in terms of members, like out
[44:20] Speaker 5: of the game.
[44:21] Speaker 2: I can't. I was doing some stuff out there with
[44:23] Speaker 2: JARCHI pregame interview on some of the punters. Mate struggled
[44:27] Speaker 2: to find a storm supporter in Manly yesterday. Yeah, Mate,
[44:31] Speaker 2: I went in Manly yesterday to catch up with mate.
[44:34] Speaker 2: Poor old Harry Grant, even through his in the depths
[44:38] Speaker 2: of his heartache, he sent me a text early in
[44:40] Speaker 2: the morning, Mum and Dad are going over to Manly tomorrow.
[44:43] Speaker 2: Would you like to catch up with him and absolutely Gasi,
[44:47] Speaker 2: the Pig and Margie. So we went in there and
[44:50] Speaker 2: as I text text the pig of course that's his nickname,
[44:54] Speaker 2: his dad. Yeah, but he is an In fact, ap.
[44:57] Speaker 1: Pig was there with with his brother mate. What about
[45:01] Speaker 1: how they talk to each other. So Pig's here with
[45:03] Speaker 1: his Harry's uncle, who's his brother. They just one They've
[45:08] Speaker 1: only got one name for each other's cocked.
[45:09] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[45:10] Speaker 1: Do you want to be cockhead? You sweet cocked? What
[45:12] Speaker 1: did you drink godhead? Yeah, mate, I'll just get us
[45:14] Speaker 1: some mid strengths, cockhead, and he came back and cocked.
[45:17] Speaker 1: There was no miad strengths. I've got your light cock it.
[45:19] Speaker 1: I don't drink a lot.
[45:20] Speaker 2: But it's not just them, mate, because I spun this yard.
[45:22] Speaker 2: Remember when me and Harry were up to port earlier
[45:24] Speaker 2: in the year to see his grand pig, to see
[45:26] Speaker 2: Pig's dad, Harry's grandpa. It's they go up there once
[45:29] Speaker 2: year playing the Cockhead Cup, which is a golf day
[45:32] Speaker 2: that they all do up there. But the brothers everyone,
[45:35] Speaker 2: He's got a brother whose name monkey unless his nickname.
[45:38] Speaker 2: Obviously they got pig Monkey, they got Billy John, and
[45:41] Speaker 2: they got George and every they all talked to each
[45:43] Speaker 2: other's game cockhead, Hey, coh.
[45:45] Speaker 1: See someone took a sign to the game Harry's mates
[45:47] Speaker 1: when you put your hand up if you think Harry
[45:49] Speaker 1: is a.
[45:49] Speaker 2: Cocka mate they do that every big game. Harry's in.
[45:53] Speaker 2: That guy and his name's Nell aka the Tadpole. He
[45:58] Speaker 2: the Tadpole makes a sign in his Iride first Origin
[46:00] Speaker 2: series he said Harry's a wanker, and then the following
[46:05] Speaker 2: Origin series made another sign that said Harry is still
[46:08] Speaker 2: a wanker. Like my favorite ever sign is Sammi Verrel's debut.
[46:14] Speaker 2: All the boys from Avalon went up and they had
[46:17] Speaker 2: a sign and said sam Verels likes Blue car Keys
[46:21] Speaker 2: but like a play on words of Boka keys and
[46:25] Speaker 2: they but they put it on the coverage. They put
[46:28] Speaker 2: it on the because obviously they came am and didn't
[46:32] Speaker 2: know what they were like getting at, and it was like,
[46:33] Speaker 2: there it is, look at Sammy Belle's friends have found
[46:36] Speaker 2: me out there advertising the Blue car kis.
[46:41] Speaker 1: Oh merely yesterday made Broncos fans people traveling over to
[46:48] Speaker 1: New Zealand for the game as well. Yeah, kiwis everywhere,
[46:50] Speaker 1: but Broncos fans.
[46:52] Speaker 2: Yeah, because they were saying about a Sydney team, I
[46:53] Speaker 2: wonder what it's going.
[46:54] Speaker 1: To be like. It's awesome.
[46:55] Speaker 2: Who made the game has not been stronger in everywhere.
[46:58] Speaker 1: And big thank you to the Whollow Sport Boys, to Jacko.
[47:00] Speaker 1: Me and Jack went to the Stain. We did a
[47:03] Speaker 1: bit of stuff there with the Hallow Sports Boys, Tommy
[47:05] Speaker 1: and Eddie fantastic.
[47:06] Speaker 4: There was a live crew down there. There are their listeners.
[47:09] Speaker 1: I was.
[47:10] Speaker 4: I was in there in the lineup beforehand.
[47:11] Speaker 3: As it was getting started, and Ge Whizz was about
[47:14] Speaker 3: two hundred and eighty of them just ready to go.
[47:16] Speaker 4: I reckon. I would have hated to be in the stain.
[47:19] Speaker 3: Beyond six o'clock because it was three beers and they
[47:22] Speaker 3: were all lathered up at three o'clock.
[47:24] Speaker 1: Painters they called punters and dribblers and dribblers. It would
[47:28] Speaker 1: have been dribbling.
[47:29] Speaker 2: I'll tell you what. Like with that late Grand Final.
[47:32] Speaker 2: I got out to there, I got out of the stadium.
[47:33] Speaker 2: I did be out there for three point thirty. People
[47:35] Speaker 2: were that maggot. I have not seen so many drunk
[47:38] Speaker 2: people in one place. I was going, the game's got
[47:41] Speaker 2: to be earlier because some people would not have seen.
[47:44] Speaker 2: I promise you now, some people would not have made
[47:46] Speaker 2: it to seven thirty eight o'clock with how I saw
[47:49] Speaker 2: them patrolling around a Core stadium at three point thirty.
[47:51] Speaker 2: There were people that were literally getting carried.
[47:53] Speaker 1: Yeah, but keeps now. I think you want the broncost
[47:56] Speaker 1: to go back to Brisbane that night, like in the
[47:59] Speaker 1: height of the and amonium. You want them to be
[48:01] Speaker 1: able to jumple a plane quickly get back and get
[48:03] Speaker 1: to Brisbane Airport where they'd just be tens of thousands
[48:05] Speaker 1: a bit.
[48:06] Speaker 2: Imagine that's what you were a love like you guys
[48:07] Speaker 2: jump straight on the bus went back to Newcastle. When
[48:10] Speaker 2: we went in twenty twenty, we couldn't go anywhere. But
[48:12] Speaker 2: what was sick was we had a charter flight. Then
[48:15] Speaker 2: we had to get back to the accommodation anyway because
[48:18] Speaker 2: you had to isolate and whatnot back then. But being blind,
[48:21] Speaker 2: everyone's got their rings on carrying the trophy onto the
[48:25] Speaker 2: charter flight with all the friends and family, like there
[48:28] Speaker 2: is something special about that. Having to travel the next
[48:31] Speaker 2: morning when like the adrenaline starts to kick out.
[48:34] Speaker 1: Of the systems make places so hung over it.
[48:38] Speaker 2: I saw about seven thirty in the morning the Broncos
[48:40] Speaker 2: boys got back to their hotel, had to pack and
[48:42] Speaker 2: then go on their flight back to Brizzi, and there
[48:44] Speaker 2: was that like reporters out the front, like mate, what
[48:47] Speaker 2: are you feeling? And I felt for the boys because
[48:49] Speaker 2: like you could tell the had just started getting sucked
[48:53] Speaker 2: out of them and like the adrenaline body would have
[48:55] Speaker 2: started feeling. The body was a bit soret what they've
[48:57] Speaker 2: just been through too.
[48:58] Speaker 1: I mean, you get the physical punishment taking a throw
[49:00] Speaker 1: on loudmouth soup in yourself.
[49:02] Speaker 2: Yeah, oh man, I've got some stuff for you. Actually,
[49:05] Speaker 2: because I've got here, I want to there's a couple
[49:10] Speaker 2: I want to show you first all the picture. Now,
[49:12] Speaker 2: I don't know if you've seen this or not, but
[49:14] Speaker 2: the funny thing about this is, obviously, while she they've
[49:16] Speaker 2: leant right into the toilet water stuff. Obviously it's performance
[49:20] Speaker 2: enhancing in their eyes. But what I love about what
[49:23] Speaker 2: match did they brought a toilet? They brought a toilet
[49:28] Speaker 2: mug into the sheds after the game and Madge and
[49:32] Speaker 2: while she was sculling for Rex's out of it, which
[49:35] Speaker 2: I thought was funny. But the best part about it
[49:37] Speaker 2: is while she would have had to have packed that mug,
[49:41] Speaker 2: hoping that they'd won so he could do that before
[49:44] Speaker 2: we gain.
[49:45] Speaker 1: Yeah, certainly so if they got beat and he would
[49:46] Speaker 1: have pulled him out, he wouldn't have.
[49:48] Speaker 2: You couldn't. You couldn't have been caught on photo drinking
[49:51] Speaker 2: out of it.
[49:52] Speaker 1: If he certainly must have had a good feeling about
[49:54] Speaker 1: the game.
[49:55] Speaker 2: It was so because that you must be confident to
[49:57] Speaker 2: do that. Shand Or in twenty twenty did that. Brought
[50:00] Speaker 2: he bought all the goggles. You know how everyone wears
[50:03] Speaker 2: the goggles now and smokes our cigars like the NBA.
[50:06] Speaker 2: Shandor bored all of that, but he wasn't playing, and
[50:08] Speaker 2: he didn't tell anyone he'd done it. He bought it
[50:10] Speaker 2: all and had it in the sheds ready in case
[50:13] Speaker 2: we'd won. If we'd lost, it probably would have just
[50:16] Speaker 2: burnt it like I never want a big caught with it.
[50:18] Speaker 1: In the eighty nine Grand Final, Kerry Hemsley was there.
[50:20] Speaker 1: Big front rail used used to be a bike. He
[50:23] Speaker 1: used to ride Harley Davison's everywhere he played. He played
[50:26] Speaker 1: the first half and got replaced at halftime. He's watching
[50:29] Speaker 1: the game in the stands by that stage. Had the
[50:32] Speaker 1: shower he's ready to go. We're ten minutes ago. He goes, mate,
[50:36] Speaker 1: this is in the bag. It might have been less
[50:37] Speaker 1: five minutes ago. This is in the bag. So he
[50:39] Speaker 1: went up to the dressing room and brought down the
[50:41] Speaker 1: champagne ready and then Canberra scored.
[50:45] Speaker 2: No way, mate, who am I thinking about right now?
[50:49] Speaker 2: Fletch no, no, no, somebody see me. Thid I was
[50:54] Speaker 2: out doing a talk at the locker room, which is
[50:58] Speaker 2: the pub across from a call before the game. Were
[51:00] Speaker 2: doing like a Q and a thing. Right before the
[51:02] Speaker 2: Grand Final, Sammy Thoide said in that twenty twenty three
[51:06] Speaker 2: GF when they got beat he was up in the
[51:08] Speaker 2: corporates and then he went, you know, I'm going down
[51:10] Speaker 2: to the sheds now and I have a beer in
[51:13] Speaker 2: the sheds for the end of the game. He went
[51:15] Speaker 2: down with that fifteen twenty minutes to go and missed
[51:18] Speaker 2: all the Nathan clearage, try, try, try, and then when
[51:22] Speaker 2: they come back in obviously like obviously he realized before
[51:24] Speaker 2: they come back in because he would have heard the heartbreak.
[51:27] Speaker 2: But he went down and was sitting in the shed
[51:29] Speaker 2: sinking beers and just didn't realize that they just had
[51:32] Speaker 2: formed this massive company because you look back, Ezra men
[51:35] Speaker 2: scored three tries. They were like three or four tries ahead.
[51:39] Speaker 1: Mate. One of the greatest stories of all time, Jacktas
[51:41] Speaker 1: alluded to Fletcher tells, was when Fletcher was captain of
[51:44] Speaker 1: Souths and would have been two thousand and three, two
[51:47] Speaker 1: thousand and two or something. Anyway, Paul Ammick is the
[51:49] Speaker 1: coach of South and they'd been having a horrid run
[51:52] Speaker 1: and they're playing Broncos at home. Broncos are attacking their
[51:55] Speaker 1: line with like thirty seconds to go. Anyway, Broncos come
[51:59] Speaker 1: up with an error. Anyway, both Wayne and Lane Mack
[52:02] Speaker 1: go well, game's over and they go. Both of them
[52:06] Speaker 1: hop in the lift. Meanwhile, there's both of them hop
[52:09] Speaker 1: in the lift. Paul Stringer takes a ball up from
[52:12] Speaker 1: South Gordon gets a one on one, stool throws out
[52:15] Speaker 1: the wing and they score. Right. Paul lang Mack and
[52:19] Speaker 1: Wayne are in the lift going down. They've seen none
[52:22] Speaker 1: of it right and Wayne Wayne goes, are good on
[52:25] Speaker 1: your lingers and he's go mate, Wayne, thanks very much mate. Anyway,
[52:28] Speaker 1: they go down and lame Mack goes down into the sheds.
[52:32] Speaker 1: He can hear all the noise from the crowd, but
[52:34] Speaker 1: he doesn't know. He just thinks they're all celebrating. He
[52:37] Speaker 1: Fletch said, they go up the race, right, and as
[52:42] Speaker 1: he's going up the race, Wayne's there and he go here,
[52:44] Speaker 1: good on your Fletch, and he he thinks that Wayne
[52:48] Speaker 1: knows they've lost. He goes fuck off. Its still being
[52:50] Speaker 1: smart ass, right, So Wayne is oblivious to the fact
[52:54] Speaker 1: as well. Mate. Fletch goes up, turns, goes in the
[52:58] Speaker 1: south dressing room and laying is in there with Champagne gains. Yeah,
[53:02] Speaker 1: fucking beauty. They had to break the news that beg beaten.
[53:07] Speaker 2: Ah, that is all the time, that would be you CBS.
[53:12] Speaker 1: Okay, can I ask you some just things before we
[53:15] Speaker 1: finish up things? I don't know if whether he can answer,
[53:18] Speaker 1: but these are really big things, Peraps are three sixty.
[53:21] Speaker 1: I get the feeling. I just get the gut. Philly's
[53:24] Speaker 1: on his way out of Melbourne. What do you think
[53:28] Speaker 1: that's a good question.
[53:29] Speaker 4: I don't know.
[53:29] Speaker 2: I don't really, It's hard. It's hard to know with
[53:31] Speaker 2: Paps because he is like, uh, he's quite like different
[53:35] Speaker 2: in that sense where he could sort of like be
[53:38] Speaker 2: interested by Rubby. Through sixty he went to Oakhill College
[53:40] Speaker 2: and rugby background as well. It's hard to get a gauge,
[53:45] Speaker 2: like I really actually struggle to get a gauge because
[53:47] Speaker 2: I I wouldn't be surprised if you did, though, and
[53:50] Speaker 2: you do get that sort of They've always had like
[53:52] Speaker 2: a bit of a relationship where you go like bits
[53:56] Speaker 2: and pieces where he's been hurt and that's sometimes they've
[53:58] Speaker 2: they've looked to offload him in different times.
[54:00] Speaker 1: I look that that does look like a bit of
[54:03] Speaker 1: a difficult relationship at times, perhaps in the storm. There's
[54:07] Speaker 1: been periods that you know, there was times that I
[54:10] Speaker 1: remember they offered him around that time and no one
[54:12] Speaker 1: took him. And then he had periods where he was
[54:14] Speaker 1: injured and they wanted him to get back on the
[54:15] Speaker 1: field but he couldn't. So there's there's been times have
[54:18] Speaker 1: been a little problematic.
[54:19] Speaker 2: If I had to put money on it, I would
[54:21] Speaker 2: I'd probably go, Yeah, I think I reckon. That's just
[54:24] Speaker 2: that's just my instinct.
[54:25] Speaker 1: Okay, if he announces he's going to go and it
[54:27] Speaker 1: doesn't start till next October, do you think the Melbourne
[54:30] Speaker 1: storm will keep him there or do you think so
[54:32] Speaker 1: far along a girl will go in and they'll make
[54:34] Speaker 1: you free to go. I would say, don't want to
[54:37] Speaker 1: lose Sewer as well.
[54:38] Speaker 2: Yeah, I think they've got Sower anyway locked up for
[54:41] Speaker 2: a little bit.
[54:41] Speaker 1: So I.
[54:44] Speaker 2: I reckon he go. I reckon he go, but because
[54:46] Speaker 2: I think I think Rugby want him to go. Now,
[54:49] Speaker 2: that's what I think the same thing with Lomax. They're
[54:51] Speaker 2: saying if he's well, I'm pretty sure he's already basically done.
[54:54] Speaker 2: I think if he goes, they're wanting him to play
[54:57] Speaker 2: rugby for that six months, either in Japan or France
[55:00] Speaker 2: and then get that instinct back because you've got to
[55:02] Speaker 2: learn the gap like. They don't want it to come
[55:04] Speaker 2: over without any sort of rugby base. So I think
[55:07] Speaker 2: that the players that Rugby three sixty who want to buy,
[55:10] Speaker 2: I imagine that they're going to want to get out
[55:12] Speaker 2: straight away.
[55:12] Speaker 1: Okay, who are going to put your money on? With Munster?
[55:16] Speaker 1: There's talked or the Wallaby's looking at him, but I
[55:20] Speaker 1: just can't see that. Okay, but Wallaby's Perth stay at Melbourne.
[55:24] Speaker 1: What do you think with Munster? It sounds like Perth
[55:28] Speaker 1: Perth will come in big for him.
[55:30] Speaker 2: Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised I think Melbourne. I reckon,
[55:34] Speaker 2: I think he'll stay. If you asked me like six
[55:36] Speaker 2: months ago, I would have I think Melbourne, and I
[55:39] Speaker 2: think I think they need to figure out what they're
[55:42] Speaker 2: going to do with Papenhausen first, because if papenhous and
[55:45] Speaker 2: if perhaps is like if Perhaps says, oh, look I
[55:47] Speaker 2: want to go to rugby, which if they're going to
[55:50] Speaker 2: throw a lot of money a perhaps, I wouldn't be
[55:51] Speaker 2: surprised if he does, because like he has had some
[55:54] Speaker 2: lingering injuries around, but they could potentially shift Monster to
[55:59] Speaker 2: full back and open it up for Pezzant and Hughsey
[56:02] Speaker 2: in the Hearts. So that's what makes me think they
[56:05] Speaker 2: want to. They want to. They want to sort Peraps
[56:07] Speaker 2: out first. In terms of what he wants to.
[56:08] Speaker 1: Do, I don't know. I think at this point in
[56:10] Speaker 1: his career and he's had sort of hip injuries in
[56:13] Speaker 1: that I don't know if he could play for that
[56:14] Speaker 1: long term. But anyway, Nelson, Okay, Nelson, do you think
[56:18] Speaker 1: he's about to leave Melbourne because there's lots of reports
[56:22] Speaker 1: that he's created the storm is over. Have you heard anything?
[56:26] Speaker 2: No, I haven't heard anything.
[56:27] Speaker 6: I haven't really heard anything about any of those boys,
[56:30] Speaker 6: they're pretty they're pretty good at keeping it like in
[56:33] Speaker 6: how people think, like boys in the locker room going like,
[56:36] Speaker 6: you know, talking about contract stuff.
[56:38] Speaker 2: No one actually ever does. Like it's such a surprise
[56:40] Speaker 2: to even the playing group when a boy goes, you know,
[56:42] Speaker 2: I'm actually signing here, I'm signing that, because no one
[56:45] Speaker 2: really has the balls to ask people up front, like
[56:47] Speaker 2: are you are you thinking about going to union? Because
[56:49] Speaker 2: it's awkward, but I reckon Nelson will go. I think
[56:53] Speaker 2: Nelson will go, yeah, Yeah, they've had I think this
[56:56] Speaker 2: year's just been a bit of a weird like it's
[56:59] Speaker 2: he's always they've always had a bit of a relationship
[57:00] Speaker 2: where he's almost started in reserve grade, but then like
[57:03] Speaker 2: by the end of the year has really come good
[57:06] Speaker 2: and they've mended that relationship. But I feel like it hasn't.
[57:10] Speaker 2: It hasn't this year given the suspension. I think if
[57:13] Speaker 2: he'd come back in this that side and then hadn't
[57:16] Speaker 2: got suspended and was really impactful in their final series,
[57:19] Speaker 2: I would have said yes.
[57:20] Speaker 1: But I think I think his sheer size, which was
[57:22] Speaker 1: his greatest advantage under these new rules, it has become
[57:25] Speaker 1: a disadvantage for him. Yea, that ability to get down
[57:29] Speaker 1: against those smaller blokes and make those tackles. He's just
[57:32] Speaker 1: clipping everyone high and yeah, some of that it's just
[57:35] Speaker 1: body position for him. He's find it hard to get
[57:38] Speaker 1: in the proper tackle position.
[57:39] Speaker 2: Yeah, it's hard because the game is so quick now too.
[57:41] Speaker 2: You don't have that much time to actually react with
[57:43] Speaker 2: your defense like you you can't. Sometimes it's hard for
[57:46] Speaker 2: him to actually even get down quick enough to hit them.
[57:49] Speaker 2: So it is it has been quite tough for him.
[57:51] Speaker 1: Any final words on the Grand Final. I just want
[57:53] Speaker 1: to do a big chip well only once again to
[57:55] Speaker 1: the Brisbane.
[57:55] Speaker 2: I want to a video.
[57:57] Speaker 1: It's been oh okay the video just it's been a
[58:00] Speaker 1: long time between the from the Golden years but all
[58:04] Speaker 1: under the Broncos you got back there well under Magic,
[58:06] Speaker 1: good stuff. Shout out to him what he got for
[58:09] Speaker 1: you saw this.
[58:10] Speaker 2: But the boys like while she and all that went
[58:12] Speaker 2: like Instagram live, TikTok live after the game and they
[58:15] Speaker 2: were like, that's dangerous. I love it, but I reckon
[58:17] Speaker 2: that's that funny because it's so good for the fans
[58:19] Speaker 2: like who were sitting at home drunk, just like they
[58:21] Speaker 2: were messaging all the boys going, look, take your shirts off.
[58:25] Speaker 2: But there's some funny there's a there's just a funny
[58:27] Speaker 2: thing where they went after Buzz roll feel quite heavily.
[58:31] Speaker 5: So I wasn't sure if you'd seen it yet. So
[58:33] Speaker 5: I wanted to just play one of my favorite partner. Okay,
[58:50] Speaker 5: Jordan Ricky just kept going.
[58:51] Speaker 7: Anyone got Jordan Ricky's had a few goes a Buzz. Yes,
[58:55] Speaker 7: I've heard Buzz talk about it. But Buzz understands buzzes
[58:58] Speaker 7: and old journey mate. He's pretty thick and he knows
[59:00] Speaker 7: that if you're going to have a shot one way,
[59:02] Speaker 7: it's a boomerang, it's going to come back.
[59:03] Speaker 1: Yeah. I don't think he has a big problem with
[59:05] Speaker 1: it at all.
[59:05] Speaker 2: It is I can't wait for them to get in
[59:07] Speaker 2: to say it like it would be so funny when
[59:09] Speaker 2: they get I wonder what Buzz did. I wonder if
[59:11] Speaker 2: he did he have an article about them or something.
[59:13] Speaker 1: I think it was about how through the year. You
[59:16] Speaker 1: know he's saying about Madge, saying about you know, he
[59:18] Speaker 1: trained him too hard and he's over the top, and
[59:21] Speaker 1: you know Madge was critical. I'm sorry, Buzz was really
[59:24] Speaker 1: critical of Madge of some of the training, the fact
[59:26] Speaker 1: you took them on a boat cruise, all those things.
[59:30] Speaker 1: I think he wrung Madge and I think Madge basically
[59:33] Speaker 1: told Buzz to get fucked and sort of things escalated
[59:36] Speaker 1: from there.
[59:36] Speaker 2: I wonder if anyone gave him Madge's number. I reckon
[59:40] Speaker 2: someone would have said. I wonder, because, like I remember
[59:44] Speaker 2: when we were on Monday celebrations after the camp, we
[59:47] Speaker 2: were prank calling so many people, like just so many,
[59:50] Speaker 2: not like journals, but like other head coaches and ship like.
[59:53] Speaker 2: We just ring them and be like and they knew
[59:55] Speaker 2: it was us because I could hear the music and
[59:57] Speaker 2: shit in the background. They didn't, no one really cared.
[59:58] Speaker 2: They thought it was funny, but we just like spray them.
[1:00:01] Speaker 2: And then I wonder if I wouldn't be surprised if
[1:00:03] Speaker 2: some of those Bronx boys got Mago and then just
[1:00:05] Speaker 2: started to prank call them.
[1:00:06] Speaker 1: But it wouldn't surprise me. The Australian cyber his name,
[1:00:10] Speaker 1: I tear what how good is the the postseason rep
[1:00:13] Speaker 1: stuff gonna be h It's gonna be good. In a
[1:00:15] Speaker 1: second show, talk about the summer on the Tonga sides.
[1:00:18] Speaker 1: But the Australians had great Spine selections, Nathan Cleary, Munster,

[1:00:38] Speaker 1: going to say as well, they've picked him, you know,
[1:00:40] Speaker 1: well under Kevy's picking him to Shibasaki. What a turnaround
[1:00:44] Speaker 1: the career. Jacob Preston, Klum and Tonguey has picked as
[1:00:47] Speaker 1: well from debutants. Good on your boys.
[1:00:49] Speaker 2: Yeah, think it's a good one. And they're saying that
[1:00:52] Speaker 2: because I believe they haven't confirmed it yet, but Xavier
[1:00:56] Speaker 2: Coats and Zachlomax were picked, but apparently they're both out
[1:01:00] Speaker 2: with some sort of injury, so they're saying Bradman Best
[1:01:02] Speaker 2: and josh Ada Carr will come in, which that's awesome,
[1:01:05] Speaker 2: great for the Fox. Oh the friend of the Potty.
[1:01:08] Speaker 5: But he's gotten back to remember he said a few
[1:01:10] Speaker 5: weeks back when we had him on, he said, I'd
[1:01:11] Speaker 5: love to get back to that rapp arena.
[1:01:13] Speaker 2: So if that is the case, shout out to him
[1:01:15] Speaker 2: because that's.
[1:01:16] Speaker 1: Sick, looked at the Kiwi side, goes for that, saying
[1:01:18] Speaker 1: you don't need to run through the Kuwi side. It's fantastic.
[1:01:20] Speaker 1: I look at the national rankings. Australia's number one, mate,
[1:01:24] Speaker 1: We're not number one. Kuhi is the number one. Well
[1:01:27] Speaker 1: Key is number one.
[1:01:27] Speaker 2: Man Husey's buster. He's got to get a shoulder surgery.
[1:01:30] Speaker 2: But shout out to Kieran Foran who has He's done
[1:01:32] Speaker 2: about three retirement speeches. Now he's backcording back out of retirement. Sorry,
[1:01:37] Speaker 2: put up a picture before in this same and he
[1:01:38] Speaker 2: goes when your country calls you go, oh goodness.
[1:01:45] Speaker 1: I'll read out a few names from firstly somehow and
[1:01:49] Speaker 1: what a test match this is going to be twenty
[1:01:51] Speaker 1: sixth of October, sun called Stadium Toma versus Somemo So
[1:01:55] Speaker 1: Summer Mariatta a young guy who gets his start from
[1:01:59] Speaker 1: the Aiders Blais to Lungey, Brian Toto, Dean Marin, Isaac Tungo,
[1:02:04] Speaker 1: your own Lui, Josh Papal Junior Bola married to Lungey Paynehasse,
[1:02:09] Speaker 1: Roger Toulvasushik, Simmy Sosagi tailor may teroror may That's just
[1:02:14] Speaker 1: some of the names in there.
[1:02:15] Speaker 2: That's that's as good as side of smow as ever had.
[1:02:17] Speaker 2: But not just big names, like they're all in great
[1:02:20] Speaker 2: forms right, Like you've got those Raiders players, they've all
[1:02:24] Speaker 2: they probably should have made a Grand Final this year.
[1:02:26] Speaker 2: And then you've got some of those some of those
[1:02:27] Speaker 2: like Bizer and.
[1:02:28] Speaker 1: Have listened to this, have listened tongue and if there
[1:02:31] Speaker 1: was a World Cup tomorrow, mate, I'd have a splash
[1:02:34] Speaker 1: on some on tong to win it. Listen with Paul Alamodi,
[1:02:37] Speaker 1: Adam Vanila, Blake, who's skipper walled under him, Mofoda Waker, Leahalissima,
[1:02:43] Speaker 1: Lehi Hoppawadi, Ellie Katowa, Isaiah Katowa. And the jewel the crown,
[1:02:50] Speaker 1: the jewel in the crown, I should say, from the
[1:02:53] Speaker 1: Sharky's police Cafusi Tolukla man Isaiah Yongi Well, Pini, Jason Tamalano,
[1:03:02] Speaker 1: Robert Toya, Daniel Tupo, Big Stefano gets to start, Dimitric
[1:03:07] Speaker 1: Wayanger and and sorry, Dimitric Vaimonga and Siwa wog my god,
[1:03:15] Speaker 1: I'll tell you what a squat tend to think.
[1:03:17] Speaker 2: Ham can't play because of his shoulder too like that's
[1:03:21] Speaker 2: that would be the great that's the best forward pack,
[1:03:24] Speaker 2: like that is one of the best forward packs. And
[1:03:26] Speaker 2: they've always lacked creativity in the spine. But now you've
[1:03:29] Speaker 2: got young blokes like Katowa Lehi Hopwadi who were just
[1:03:32] Speaker 2: setting the world on fire at the moment, any young
[1:03:35] Speaker 2: as well. It's I wonder how they fit them both in.
[1:03:39] Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know. They've got to have him in there,
[1:03:41] Speaker 1: but I think probably i'd say young ear be full back.
[1:03:43] Speaker 1: I'd say LeHo go on the wing. But but Isaiahkatoa,
[1:03:48] Speaker 1: and he's the one. Like they've Tonga have had great
[1:03:52] Speaker 1: backs and they've had great forwards, but they've needed that
[1:03:54] Speaker 1: spine to be right now, this bloke that's crazy, this
[1:03:56] Speaker 1: bloke who is going to end up as one of
[1:03:58] Speaker 1: the greatest players of all time. He's going to wing
[1:04:01] Speaker 1: mate with him steering the side. They are going to
[1:04:04] Speaker 1: win a World Cup in his time there.
[1:04:06] Speaker 2: I'm exited. I'm actually very very excited to watch that
[1:04:10] Speaker 2: tongue and somehow were playing against each other. Yep, that'd
[1:04:12] Speaker 2: be I'll tell you right now that if people should
[1:04:16] Speaker 2: get their tickets to that, because the atmosphere I was
[1:04:19] Speaker 2: at that test last year where Tonga is and Australia
[1:04:23] Speaker 2: played out of Combank and I haven't felt atmosphere like it,
[1:04:26] Speaker 2: and that was just from the Tonguan fans. None of
[1:04:28] Speaker 2: the Aussies were really insane anything. So Tonga and Sama
[1:04:31] Speaker 2: are at either ends of the stadium, that'll be as
[1:04:33] Speaker 2: good as rugby league atmosphere, if not atmosphere in the
[1:04:36] Speaker 2: world as you have ever seen. I'm that excited. I
[1:04:38] Speaker 2: could swear and.
[1:04:40] Speaker 1: Go on good, just do it.
[1:04:42] Speaker 2: Go fuck yourself, mate, Dad.
[1:04:45] Speaker 1: And as I said before, mate the coup week side,
[1:04:48] Speaker 1: it goes without yes saying it's fantastic to him. Stacey
[1:04:51] Speaker 1: Jones too well under stage coach and the team. Finally
[1:04:55] Speaker 1: he weld unto all the clubs, the coaches weld under
[1:04:59] Speaker 1: all the fans. This, in my opinion, has been the
[1:05:02] Speaker 1: greatest seasonal football I've ever seen. The players have just
[1:05:05] Speaker 1: been outstanding. It's been just been a joy to watch
[1:05:09] Speaker 1: and makes you proud to be a rugby league men.
[1:05:11] Speaker 5: And shout out to all our back fences, all of
