[0:00] Speaker 1: Matthew, I think we have just witnessed one of the
[0:03] Speaker 1: greatest finals games in history. Can travers the Brisbane Broncos.
[0:07] Speaker 1: I mean we anticipated it was going to be good,
[0:09] Speaker 1: but that was Does this set the final series up
[0:13] Speaker 1: for a horrible Grand Final?
[0:15] Speaker 2: Mate, Coops And as we talk here to let people know,
[0:19] Speaker 2: this is one game that we really haven't had a
[0:22] Speaker 2: second look at the other games that we'll watch and
[0:24] Speaker 2: then go and I'll go back and review certain parts
[0:27] Speaker 2: of it to get to understand the nuances of the
[0:29] Speaker 2: game and how it was panned out. This one, I've
[0:32] Speaker 2: just come straight from work straight into here made I'm
[0:35] Speaker 2: still blown away by it.
[0:37] Speaker 1: Unbelievable, the controversy, the drama in it. There were so
[0:41] Speaker 1: many different dramatic points, and then you look at the
[0:46] Speaker 1: even key moments like Reese Walsh missing a couple of
[0:50] Speaker 1: those goals, hits them, hits the crossbar on a two
[0:54] Speaker 1: point field goal, and you think, oh, this is done.
[0:57] Speaker 1: After the siren a penalty to then make a kick
[1:00] Speaker 1: a goal from in front. I mean, that was so
[1:04] Speaker 1: proper dressed up as an NRL game, Mate, it was.
[1:07] Speaker 2: It was incredible. And Jack and I were talking on
[1:12] Speaker 2: the drive home. I rang him on the way back
[1:13] Speaker 2: to say, mate, I'll be back in about twenty minutes,
[1:15] Speaker 2: and we had a broad discussion about the game and
[1:19] Speaker 2: Jack made a point which I hadn't thought of until
[1:24] Speaker 2: Jack said it, And it is so accurate in the
[1:26] Speaker 2: fact that the Reese Walsh sin bidding for the headbut
[1:34] Speaker 2: actually played into the Broncos hands. Now, people say, oh,
[1:37] Speaker 2: that's you know, that's crazy, but think of it like this.
[1:41] Speaker 2: He goes off for that ten minutes. In that ten minutes,
[1:44] Speaker 2: like the pace of the game, in the intensity of
[1:47] Speaker 2: the game, he got a ten minute breather. He went back.
[1:49] Speaker 2: Now they went down to eleven men, right, but he's
[1:53] Speaker 2: sitting out there. He gets to breathe for ten minutes,
[1:56] Speaker 2: goes back on the field. By that point, I think
[1:58] Speaker 2: they're down by sixteen points. And he comes on totally
[2:01] Speaker 2: fresh in a game where all the big men of
[2:03] Speaker 2: fatigued and just goes wham wham wham. It is one
[2:07] Speaker 2: of I can't remember a game where an individual has
[2:11] Speaker 2: had such a eventful game, an eventful afternoon like he did.
[2:16] Speaker 2: But his last his last fifteen minutes when he came
[2:19] Speaker 2: back on after the sin bin, I'd almost put up
[2:22] Speaker 2: on level as far as performance with Nathan Cleary in
[2:25] Speaker 2: that Grand Final, I agree with the Penrith yeah over
[2:28] Speaker 2: the Broncos.
[2:29] Speaker 1: Well, this is the thing. And you look at the
[2:31] Speaker 1: best finals games of all time, and most of them
[2:34] Speaker 1: are Grand Finals because it's just the most memorable. You
[2:37] Speaker 1: think of Broncos verse Cowboys twenty fifteen, Ben Hunter drops it,
[2:41] Speaker 1: Jonathan Thurston kicks out field goal. You look at twenty
[2:44] Speaker 1: twenty two, I believe it well, twenty two to three
[2:47] Speaker 1: Penrith versus Broncos and Nathan Cleary puts on that clinic
[2:51] Speaker 1: to get him back. And now you look at this
[2:53] Speaker 1: game camera Verse Broncos. Broncos have been in the three
[2:56] Speaker 1: probably biggest finals games of the last twenty years.
[2:59] Speaker 2: And I was sitting in that last dramatic as it
[3:04] Speaker 2: went to extra time. We went into the studio and
[3:06] Speaker 2: I'm sitting next to Kevy Kevy Wallas in the studio
[3:09] Speaker 2: and he's watching the game and like of course with
[3:12] Speaker 2: his son Billy playing, who by the way, has been
[3:14] Speaker 2: playing outstanding, but he's sitting there and I watched him
[3:19] Speaker 2: the most crucial part of the game when it's going
[3:21] Speaker 2: to the golden point extra time and all that sort
[3:22] Speaker 2: of stuff. Every time Billy got the ball, I just
[3:24] Speaker 2: saw Kevy Titan, and I know what that's like, as
[3:27] Speaker 2: father is just like, don't make an error, just get up,
[3:30] Speaker 2: play the ball, yep, okay. And I could see that
[3:33] Speaker 2: with keV and made. He was right, he was made.
[3:36] Speaker 2: He was on the roller coaster.
[3:37] Speaker 1: You can imagine what he would have been like as
[3:39] Speaker 1: a coach when he was coaching them in those big
[3:40] Speaker 1: games as well, with Billy out there, because it's one
[3:43] Speaker 1: of those games where people will remember where they were
[3:47] Speaker 1: when they watched it. And I reckon because I was
[3:49] Speaker 1: sitting there with five minutes to go in that game
[3:52] Speaker 1: when Reese Walsh missed that field goal hit the crossby,
[3:55] Speaker 1: I thought, I think it's all done. I ordered chicken
[3:58] Speaker 1: wings right from Wings and Tins. Now they're up the
[4:00] Speaker 1: road and they give you the I scheduled it for
[4:03] Speaker 1: twenty minutes time just in case it went to like
[4:06] Speaker 1: extra time or whatever. But anyway it goes through, it
[4:08] Speaker 1: goes to extra time, it gets to golden point. My
[4:11] Speaker 1: chicken wings are ready, like they're ready to be picked up.
[4:14] Speaker 1: And you don't want to leave chicken going to like
[4:15] Speaker 1: too long reasons and shit, yeah, and then it gets
[4:19] Speaker 1: into extra time and it just continues to go and go.
[4:22] Speaker 1: I can only imagine what it was like for you
[4:23] Speaker 1: buy the time I got there, my chicken wings were
[4:24] Speaker 1: color I was.
[4:25] Speaker 2: I can imagine. I feel so sorry for your wings.
[4:28] Speaker 1: They were Blake was like, where have you been? But
[4:30] Speaker 1: I can only imagine what that's like for you guys
[4:31] Speaker 1: in the studio too. You're you're thinking you're about to
[4:33] Speaker 1: go straight on an and then an extra half an
[4:35] Speaker 1: hour so you don't get on in.
[4:36] Speaker 2: The crowd in the studio because we had Broncos fans
[4:40] Speaker 2: in the crowd, we had numerous Raider supporters, and it
[4:43] Speaker 2: was just it was crazy, Coop, Yeah, it was. And
[4:48] Speaker 2: you know, there's so much happened in that last twenty
[4:51] Speaker 2: twenty five minutes. There's a lot. I just forget a
[4:54] Speaker 2: lot of it. Like you know when you said, Reese
[4:56] Speaker 2: Wash hit the ball, hit it hit the crossbar, crossbar. Oh,
[5:00] Speaker 2: that's right. I've forgotten about that because just so much
[5:03] Speaker 2: was going on.
[5:03] Speaker 1: So many key moments, obviously the sendoffs, but then even
[5:07] Speaker 1: that that last penalty. You know Zach Hosking, great friend
[5:11] Speaker 1: of the potty who probably probably wouldn't have been penalized
[5:15] Speaker 1: for it if not for seven weeks ago when Harry
[5:18] Speaker 1: Grant got panalized for it against Many. They sort of
[5:21] Speaker 1: set a precedent there. Yeah, because I'm watching it. You
[5:23] Speaker 1: go as a fan, you go an unbiased fan, you go,
[5:25] Speaker 1: it's probably not a penalty. You didn't actually put dangerous
[5:28] Speaker 1: kick pressure on. But they set it. They set a
[5:30] Speaker 1: precedent where if you hit that leg at all, it's
[5:33] Speaker 1: a penalty. After theo like the ref had blown on
[5:36] Speaker 1: his whistle, they're all celebrating on the sideline. And then
[5:39] Speaker 1: they brought in that new rule not long ago where
[5:41] Speaker 1: you can review if it's the last play, the bunker
[5:43] Speaker 1: can intervene, like so dramatic.
[5:46] Speaker 2: So dramatic, so much they would be sitting there those
[5:48] Speaker 2: Raiders plays with the head on the pillow, staring at
[5:50] Speaker 2: the roof, saying, if only if that, if that just
[5:54] Speaker 2: had happened, and if we go through the game now
[5:56] Speaker 2: and earlier in the week, I thought, I was looking
[6:00] Speaker 2: at this game, and I thought, yeah, you know what,
[6:02] Speaker 2: what gives what gave the Broncos and would get and
[6:05] Speaker 2: gave the Broncos gems going into the game. Sorry is
[6:08] Speaker 2: the fact that they liked to play very similar style.
[6:10] Speaker 2: It was going to be a day game. It was
[6:12] Speaker 2: going to be a fast track and you can move
[6:14] Speaker 2: the ball around. They both like to play attacking football,
[6:16] Speaker 2: so it was going to be okay, who attacks best.
[6:18] Speaker 2: It's not like when you have an opposition like a
[6:20] Speaker 2: Penrith and they are right they can out. They might
[6:22] Speaker 2: out attack you, but they also might suffocate you with
[6:25] Speaker 2: that style. Both of those sides, mate, they've got their DNA.
[6:28] Speaker 2: They like to move the football. They like to open
[6:29] Speaker 2: the field up for their for their quick guys, particularly
[6:32] Speaker 2: the guys out the back, Walsh and and Kyle Weeks.
[6:35] Speaker 2: And so as the game started to getting I was thinking,
[6:37] Speaker 2: he's going to win this. Earlier in the week I
[6:38] Speaker 2: thought Broncos might. But today I got up and were
[6:42] Speaker 2: driving into work, I went, man, it's a fatal complete
[6:44] Speaker 2: I just for me. The Raiders in my mind were
[6:48] Speaker 2: already going to win this. And then the game started
[6:51] Speaker 2: and the Broncos started so quick and energetic. I thought, wow.
[6:55] Speaker 2: But Raiders, after a bit of an unsettled start, sort
[6:58] Speaker 2: of steady themselves, absorbed a lot of that pressure and
[7:01] Speaker 2: then counterpunched and from there up until up until it
[7:06] Speaker 2: was forty minutes ago. I just went watching it and
[7:09] Speaker 2: I'm saying right out, it's basically getting to the point
[7:11] Speaker 2: there's going to be raiders by how many raiders by what?
[7:15] Speaker 2: And then they score that try, and over the commentary
[7:18] Speaker 2: they go, oh, you know it's not over yet, and
[7:19] Speaker 2: I'm thinking, well, yeah, technically it's not, but it is.
[7:23] Speaker 2: I can't. I just don't know where Broncos are going
[7:25] Speaker 2: to get their points that quickly. And then of course
[7:27] Speaker 2: they just keep going down cameras right hand side defense
[7:31] Speaker 2: and later we're going to talk midweek, we'll give our preview,
[7:35] Speaker 2: but that's an area they've got to tighten up, that
[7:37] Speaker 2: right hand.
[7:40] Speaker 1: Defense. It was all at Sooner and Stuart, Yeah, he just.
[7:46] Speaker 2: Kept going down that side, Reese Walsh continually.
[7:48] Speaker 1: And you could see when they when you go down
[7:51] Speaker 1: an edge and you start to lose confidence like that.
[7:54] Speaker 1: I think the first the first try they scored, he
[7:58] Speaker 1: Walsh went down, he made a line break himself. Timmico
[8:02] Speaker 1: turned out, he went through Foggety and then scored the
[8:04] Speaker 1: next time they go down there, Timmico and everyone turns
[8:08] Speaker 1: in obviously not wanting to take a dummy that he
[8:10] Speaker 1: throws long, the winger scores, then the next one Billy
[8:14] Speaker 1: Walters pumps long jets, Stewart goes out and then Shibasaki
[8:18] Speaker 1: goes through. You just see how you toy you with
[8:21] Speaker 1: an edge defense by just showing the different variations.
[8:23] Speaker 2: Beautiful little variations all the time, nice little variations, and
[8:27] Speaker 2: that they were it was.
[8:29] Speaker 1: The game was at an intensity. It was a completely
[8:31] Speaker 1: different level to all the other three finals games.
[8:33] Speaker 2: But I totally agree it was not just the exciting finish,
[8:37] Speaker 2: but the intensity and the spoed of the game made
[8:39] Speaker 2: it the best finals game. And Coop, that's day football.
[8:43] Speaker 2: We all say, mate, day football is you can move
[8:46] Speaker 2: the ball around. It's a faster game. And and the
[8:49] Speaker 2: reason why Cooper gets more exciting at the back end
[8:52] Speaker 2: of the game is the nature of the game of
[8:54] Speaker 2: day football. The moving, the intensity of the pace means
[8:57] Speaker 2: that the big guys really tire out. Like you look
[8:59] Speaker 2: at the last the last twenty minutes, it was just
[9:02] Speaker 2: like touch football moving around they were. And that's that's
[9:04] Speaker 2: the sorry, Coops. That's the thing about it is if
[9:07] Speaker 2: you if you go back and you go back and
[9:09] Speaker 2: watch the game, and what will show is that first
[9:12] Speaker 2: thirty minutes was so fast and so intense. You got
[9:15] Speaker 2: a little You've got a little clue of what was
[9:17] Speaker 2: to come. And that last ten minutes, you see the
[9:19] Speaker 2: middles were out on their feet and they were so vulnerable,
[9:22] Speaker 2: and Makaye scored that try checked off his right foot
[9:24] Speaker 2: went through basically untouched. And that's when you went right,
[9:28] Speaker 2: this second half is going to be all about the
[9:30] Speaker 2: little guys. Yeah, and that's that's how it transports.
[9:32] Speaker 1: There were different cycles where I was watching the game, going, jeez,
[9:35] Speaker 1: Broncos are out on their feet. Here they looked they
[9:37] Speaker 1: looked so tired, and then ten minutes later like Raiders
[9:42] Speaker 1: look completely out on their feet. It just kept the
[9:44] Speaker 1: fatigue just that was like a burt on. They just
[9:46] Speaker 1: kept passing the fatigue over. And even though it was
[9:48] Speaker 1: a high intense game, when twenty minutes in, Madge brings
[9:51] Speaker 1: paying hals off because he's a bloke that can play
[9:54] Speaker 1: huge minutes. Is played eighty minutes in numerous games, but
[9:58] Speaker 1: it's so intense and he wants him to be effective,
[10:00] Speaker 1: not out there just trying to get through the game.
[10:02] Speaker 1: He's got to be playing at a high INTENSI that
[10:04] Speaker 1: even pain has to come off and then obviously goes
[10:07] Speaker 1: on hurts his ankle and he ye soldier through the
[10:09] Speaker 1: rest of that game.
[10:10] Speaker 2: And people say at the time sport is ninety five
[10:13] Speaker 2: percent mental, five percent physical. This is an example of
[10:15] Speaker 2: it in the fact that you're watching that second half
[10:18] Speaker 2: not long after halftime, on watching and I say to
[10:20] Speaker 2: Fletcher Hind and said, hey, look at the Broncos middles.
[10:23] Speaker 2: They're gone, They're out on their feet. I said, they're
[10:25] Speaker 2: just going to blast away here the Raiders. But when
[10:30] Speaker 2: Walsh comes back on the field and that first try
[10:33] Speaker 2: they scored to bring it back to what was it
[10:35] Speaker 2: twenty eight to sixteen, anyway, that within twelve and suddenly
[10:40] Speaker 2: what happened there was the Broncos all of a sudden
[10:44] Speaker 2: get energized. And it's not like the Raiders hit the wall.
[10:48] Speaker 2: They didn't hit the wall. What they did they stopped playing.
[10:50] Speaker 2: They got nervous straight away and they scored that try.
[10:53] Speaker 2: It's almost all in their minds are going, we can't
[10:56] Speaker 2: lose this from here, surely not. Then they score again
[10:59] Speaker 2: and the Raiders just stop playing football. They will look
[11:01] Speaker 2: back on that game in that in that last fourteen
[11:05] Speaker 2: minutes and more than just talking about the right side defense,
[11:10] Speaker 2: all the errors they made and little defensive misroads and
[11:13] Speaker 2: all that. The biggest thing Ricky will say is, boys,
[11:16] Speaker 2: we stopped playing and in the modern game, with the
[11:18] Speaker 2: speed of the rucks of the momentum, is it mate,
[11:20] Speaker 2: If you stop playing right and you're just trying to
[11:23] Speaker 2: defend mate, side is just going to go wham wham
[11:25] Speaker 2: whim and just rattle am up.
[11:26] Speaker 1: Well, particularly a sidelight the Broncos, like you saw it
[11:29] Speaker 1: throughout that whole game. Canber kicked a lot of seven
[11:31] Speaker 1: tackle sets and you see the effect of seven tackle sets.
[11:35] Speaker 1: You saw it across the whole weekend. How during the
[11:38] Speaker 1: round you probably don't see it because you're not playing
[11:41] Speaker 1: up against the best sides a lot of the weeks,
[11:43] Speaker 1: so sometimes you might be playing against the bottom four
[11:45] Speaker 1: side kicker seven tackle set. They don't really make you
[11:47] Speaker 1: pay for it in finals footy, little errors like that.
[11:51] Speaker 1: There was one where Cayo kicked it early and it
[11:53] Speaker 1: went seven Broncos you don't see. You don't wrestle the
[11:57] Speaker 1: momentum back for ten to fifteen minutes. They good sides,
[12:01] Speaker 1: they get down there, they put you in a corner,
[12:02] Speaker 1: they get a repeat set and you do not get
[12:05] Speaker 1: back down your side of the field for an attacking
[12:08] Speaker 1: chance again for a fifteen to twenty minutes. It takes
[12:10] Speaker 1: all the fatigue out.
[12:11] Speaker 2: It does and Coop. It happens to the best of them.
[12:13] Speaker 2: We're going to talk about the wires and Penrith a
[12:15] Speaker 2: little bit later, but Nathan Cleary once in the second
[12:17] Speaker 2: half just put them through a bit of a frivolous
[12:20] Speaker 2: kick seven tackle set Warriors worked, went down the other
[12:23] Speaker 2: end of the field like a hello. Seama scores. Yeah,
[12:25] Speaker 2: it happens to the best from the best defenses. Whenever
[12:28] Speaker 2: when you give away a seven tackle set, momentum just swings.
[12:31] Speaker 1: Can I ask we're going to get to our back
[12:33] Speaker 1: fence player of this match, but I want to ask
[12:36] Speaker 1: you we're going to preview during the week, but pain
[12:40] Speaker 1: halfs obviously those boys go through to a pre limb.
[12:43] Speaker 1: We don't know the extent of pain. Hass is injury.
[12:46] Speaker 1: Can they win the pre lim Grand Final without paying
[12:50] Speaker 1: hass Do you think the Brisbane Broncos.
[12:52] Speaker 2: I think they can. Look that they can, but it
[12:55] Speaker 2: just makes everything a little bit harder. That's you know,
[12:56] Speaker 2: other guys are going to have to stand right, step
[12:58] Speaker 2: right up. Here's the thing about it too. They they've
[13:01] Speaker 2: got a nervous weight the Broncos for next day or two,
[13:05] Speaker 2: not just as far as injuries concerned. The ref Walsh
[13:08] Speaker 2: head butt, yeah right, and made the Pat Carrigan one,
[13:12] Speaker 2: which might even be more serious than that the resh one.
[13:16] Speaker 2: I'll say this in the Broncos favor the na Real
[13:22] Speaker 2: really want Walsh there, you know.
[13:24] Speaker 1: What I mean? And can I like and I looked
[13:27] Speaker 1: at that incident right and and how like there wasn't
[13:32] Speaker 1: a lot in it, like the head part was and
[13:34] Speaker 1: and I get the head butt and yahda YadA, and
[13:36] Speaker 1: it should have been a penalty to the Raiders. I thought.
[13:38] Speaker 1: I didn't like that Hudson had actually been sent off
[13:41] Speaker 1: for just instigating and niggling, because that's part of the game.
[13:44] Speaker 1: Sometimes the game, you try to get under the opposition
[13:46] Speaker 1: skin so they make an error like punching or something,
[13:49] Speaker 1: so they get sent off. It's your advantage. But that
[13:51] Speaker 1: I didn't think there was a lot in Reswash went off.
[13:53] Speaker 1: I don't think you should be suspended for it.
[13:55] Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, yeah, I hope he doesn't on him there.
[14:00] Speaker 2: It's like it's he's so powerful for the game. It
[14:04] Speaker 2: brings people to the game. I hope he doesn't. I
[14:06] Speaker 2: hope he plays, but I think it's gonna be nervous weight.
[14:08] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[14:11] Speaker 2: And the same with the carrigan. I mean, I want
[14:13] Speaker 2: the I want the best players. I just want the
[14:15] Speaker 2: best player with the best sides out there. And it's
[14:18] Speaker 2: funny with the hard someone getting tend to sim Come on, guys,
[14:21] Speaker 2: what's that you know? Just because one person gets yes,
[14:24] Speaker 2: there's a bit of a melee, a melee melee merle mellie.
[14:28] Speaker 2: Just because there's a bit of a push and shove
[14:31] Speaker 2: doesn't and someone is going to go to the symbing
[14:33] Speaker 2: doesn't mean a player from the opposition as together symb a.
[14:36] Speaker 1: Well, the modern game, it's it's like they're so they
[14:41] Speaker 1: are afraid of criticism, so they try to make it equal. Yeah,
[14:44] Speaker 1: even though it's not like even though it's Hudson got
[14:47] Speaker 1: in his face and I understand he probably instigated it,
[14:49] Speaker 1: but at the end of the day, like it is
[14:51] Speaker 1: on you as a player to hold your nerve a
[14:54] Speaker 1: little bit. And while she probably got a bit angry,
[14:56] Speaker 1: gave him a bit of a gave him a bit
[14:58] Speaker 1: of a love tap, a little bit of Liverpool kiss.
[15:00] Speaker 1: But you know, I didn't think that you need to
[15:03] Speaker 1: send HUDs yet, just to just to square it up.
[15:06] Speaker 2: You get, Look, someone gets in your face and sledges.
[15:09] Speaker 1: Yeah, then part of the.
[15:11] Speaker 2: Professional is you've got to take it. Yeah, you can
[15:13] Speaker 2: give a little bit back, but the reason they're sledging
[15:16] Speaker 2: you is that come on you and have a go.
[15:18] Speaker 2: They're trying to they're trying to unnerve you, or they're
[15:20] Speaker 2: trying to get you to react. And Rees did that.
[15:23] Speaker 1: Hunds to tell you it was great acting from Huddy
[15:25] Speaker 1: as well. Honey, you would have wanted to Silver argue
[15:27] Speaker 1: for it, because you like, he gave him a little
[15:29] Speaker 1: little nudge on the chin and then he then he
[15:31] Speaker 1: pushed him. Hudson fully hit the deck, but he did
[15:34] Speaker 1: it so well it didn't actually look like a flop
[15:35] Speaker 1: and it looks like he actually got pushed over.
[15:38] Speaker 2: I don't say silver like you had to say gold load. Yeah.
[15:40] Speaker 1: I just thought, you know, there's been some good performances.
[15:42] Speaker 1: Harry Grant probably takes the goal.
[15:44] Speaker 2: Yeah, I'll just say this, coop. This is both coaches
[15:49] Speaker 2: would have been up in that box when the game
[15:51] Speaker 2: went into up into toward one hundred minutes going geez,
[15:56] Speaker 2: we're going to get through here, you know, like we've
[15:58] Speaker 2: got it, We've got We've got to get through here
[16:00] Speaker 2: because Ricky's got a huge job now to get the
[16:02] Speaker 2: players up mentally physically, yes, but more mentally to get
[16:07] Speaker 2: to try to climb that mount and again when you're
[16:09] Speaker 2: just about you're just about home. And let's talk about
[16:13] Speaker 2: the Broncos for one second. You saw the effect of
[16:16] Speaker 2: the Broncos in the last eighteen months after losing that
[16:19] Speaker 2: Grand Final, after being ahead in almost such a similar
[16:23] Speaker 2: situation we're in our head with fourteen fifteen minutes ago
[16:26] Speaker 2: and getting run down and beaten, and the effect that
[16:28] Speaker 2: that had on them in the next season, right even
[16:31] Speaker 2: into the next year. It had an effect. Ricky's got
[16:33] Speaker 2: one week to get them up and get them going again.
[16:36] Speaker 2: And that's without talking about the physical side of it.
[16:40] Speaker 2: Where Madge goes okay, he goes away, They fly back
[16:44] Speaker 2: tonight to Brisbane. They exhale, right to put our legs
[16:48] Speaker 2: up for a few days. Let's get ourselves ready. Well.
[16:52] Speaker 1: I remember Cameron Smith used to say this leading into
[16:55] Speaker 1: finals when he was at the Storm. He said, you
[16:58] Speaker 1: need the week off, he said, he said, I've played
[17:02] Speaker 1: these people have got different theories. Sometimes people like to
[17:04] Speaker 1: play consistently week in week out and get momentum going
[17:07] Speaker 1: to a grand final. He said, I've done it every
[17:09] Speaker 1: single way someone can in finals footy, and the way
[17:14] Speaker 1: you win a grand final is you got to win
[17:16] Speaker 1: that if you're in the top four. This is why
[17:17] Speaker 1: people don't win outside of the top four, not because
[17:20] Speaker 1: they're a worse team or they you know, they finish
[17:23] Speaker 1: lower on the ladder. It's not because of that. It's
[17:25] Speaker 1: because you don't get the opportunity to get the week off.
[17:28] Speaker 1: You have to go the lot. You have to play
[17:29] Speaker 1: each week against top eight teams and then get into
[17:32] Speaker 1: a grand final. But Melbourne have done it when they've
[17:36] Speaker 1: won the Grand final. They've always gone week off, play
[17:39] Speaker 1: a pre lim and then get to the Grand final.
[17:41] Speaker 1: And I think it's a point that probably isn't stressed
[17:44] Speaker 1: enough how important that week off is to go straight
[17:46] Speaker 1: to a pre limb.
[17:47] Speaker 2: There's always been that discussion, keep playing football, keep winning
[17:52] Speaker 2: and get momentum, or have a week off. There was
[17:55] Speaker 2: always the debate. And I'll remember back when years when
[17:57] Speaker 2: I played, and even the years just before that preceded me.
[18:01] Speaker 2: The feeling was no, no, keep playing now. The week
[18:04] Speaker 2: off can break your momentum, you know, and you get
[18:06] Speaker 2: out hop you get out of the groove. Now everyone
[18:09] Speaker 2: universally just goes you need it, you need the week off.
[18:12] Speaker 1: Yeah, Who's who's your best?
[18:14] Speaker 2: Who's your's a back fence.
[18:15] Speaker 1: Player of the match, back fence player of the match,
[18:17] Speaker 1: I mean my one. He was my ex factor in
[18:21] Speaker 1: the review. In the preview for this week, Reese Walsh,
[18:24] Speaker 1: I think he was at halftime. I had Hudson written
[18:27] Speaker 1: down Hudson Young. I thought Hudson was unbelievable, set up
[18:30] Speaker 1: a try off a kick, scored one off a foggedy kick,
[18:33] Speaker 1: and he was given Ben Hunt nightmares all game running
[18:36] Speaker 1: at in one on one. But Reese Walsh two forty
[18:39] Speaker 1: twenties two try, assists a try of his own, and
[18:43] Speaker 1: is just his overall impact and energy when he come
[18:46] Speaker 1: back on that field, I thought he was unbelievable.
[18:48] Speaker 2: One of his greatest performances. And as I said before
[18:50] Speaker 2: that last fifteen minutes, the way he came on and
[18:54] Speaker 2: just basically almost single handedly won that game, I'd say
[18:57] Speaker 2: his greatest performance, greatest at fifteen minute period. You just go, wow,
[19:02] Speaker 2: frame that put it up on the wall. Look, I said,
[19:05] Speaker 2: it's really well. So I'll go a different way my
[19:08] Speaker 2: bad fans. But I'm going to have Billy Walters. I
[19:10] Speaker 2: just think Billy defensively, he was really strong, made his
[19:13] Speaker 2: running game is really strong, said nice little death moments.
[19:16] Speaker 2: And we'll talk about this more on the preview. But
[19:18] Speaker 2: I without a doubt I think that Reynolds will come back.
[19:22] Speaker 2: Reynolds will go, in my opinion, into the team. I
[19:25] Speaker 2: reckon Kevin, they will keep Billy Walters at six. And
[19:28] Speaker 2: I think Ben huntle got nine. Yeah, I think so.
[19:32] Speaker 2: I think sometimes with Ben Hunt and Reno there's a
[19:35] Speaker 2: bit of the sameness. Yeah you know what I mean. Look,
[19:38] Speaker 2: but Billy just brings a little bit of something different.
[19:40] Speaker 1: It's a tough it's going to be a tough decision
[19:42] Speaker 1: for me. I mean, good decision to have because he's
[19:44] Speaker 1: got blokes so we can do a job there. But yeah,
[19:48] Speaker 1: I think that's interesting.
[19:48] Speaker 2: And world undermage because he he's copt a lot of
[19:51] Speaker 2: stick through the year when you know about all the stuff,
[19:53] Speaker 2: how hard he trained him. Here we go, oh, here
[19:55] Speaker 2: we go again, Madge. We'll I tell you what the
[19:57] Speaker 2: reason he trained him hard? It was an evident this afternoon. Yeah,
[20:01] Speaker 2: because mate, they dug in and we're able to win
[20:04] Speaker 2: that game. And I'd see what they don't win that
[20:07] Speaker 2: game last year? No, no way, they they do not
[20:09] Speaker 2: win that game last year. This year they're much they're
[20:14] Speaker 2: more battle hardened. I think they've got a mental toughness
[20:17] Speaker 2: about them. You're going to take a lot of stopping.
[20:19] Speaker 1: On the Now to the Saturday night game. The Roosters
[20:22] Speaker 1: played the Sharks, obviously elimination game. Roosters are now out,
[20:27] Speaker 1: They're on Mad Monday. Sharks will play the loser of
[20:30] Speaker 1: that Broncos Verse Raiders game. So the Sharks be the
[20:33] Speaker 1: Raiders next week, which will preview. But what did you
[20:35] Speaker 1: take out of this Roosters and Sharks game? Because I
[20:38] Speaker 1: think a lot of a lot of the games this round,
[20:41] Speaker 1: they all started the first twenty minutes very physical, very
[20:44] Speaker 1: high intense. Well how did you see this one?
[20:47] Speaker 2: Look in a nutshell coop the Sharks. They played smarter,
[20:53] Speaker 2: but I think more important, I mean, that's primary importance,
[20:57] Speaker 2: but as important was how physical that played. The Roosters
[21:01] Speaker 2: have been beating sides on the back of their physicality
[21:04] Speaker 2: like their pack has been enormous but made the the
[21:07] Speaker 2: I just thought the Sharks pack were outstanding and one
[21:12] Speaker 2: of the things that allowed them to defend so strongly
[21:16] Speaker 2: was the fact that the back three well and Ronalda
[21:22] Speaker 2: like the work that they do in yardage just make
[21:26] Speaker 2: mate weaving through getting them on the back of They
[21:29] Speaker 2: dominate sets of six a little bit like Brian Toe
[21:31] Speaker 2: and Dylan Edwards you know, do with Penrith when they're flying.
[21:35] Speaker 2: The fact that they dominated sets of six, they would
[21:37] Speaker 2: bring the ball back to the to the Sharks forwards
[21:40] Speaker 2: and it basically it just it just allowed the Sharks
[21:44] Speaker 2: forwards to take a little breather in yardage and then
[21:48] Speaker 2: keep the gas in the tank you for defense. And
[21:51] Speaker 2: that was always going to be really important because they
[21:54] Speaker 2: are up against the side that had seen Walker who's
[21:56] Speaker 2: been flying and in attack. But the other one made
[22:00] Speaker 2: Tedesco to defend, you know, the Shark pack. They needed
[22:05] Speaker 2: energy in the tank to be able to withstand what
[22:10] Speaker 2: Tedesco is going to do with his fast feet through
[22:13] Speaker 2: the middle and his past selection. So that that was
[22:16] Speaker 2: it for me. I just thought I thought they played smart,
[22:18] Speaker 2: I thought they played tough, but I thought Ronaldo and Sionakutawa.
[22:21] Speaker 2: I thought they were so good for their folls.
[22:23] Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree, And you make a good point on
[22:26] Speaker 1: their physically. I think all the games were physical as
[22:29] Speaker 1: but what the Sharks did so well was they actually
[22:32] Speaker 1: attacked with their defense, if that makes sense. Yeah, a
[22:35] Speaker 1: lot of times they front loaded so much energy into defense,
[22:39] Speaker 1: forcing errors out of the roosters. But a key moment
[22:43] Speaker 1: for me was I think it was Ronaldo Milatalo's second
[22:47] Speaker 1: try in that first half right before halftime, which was
[22:50] Speaker 1: a real uh you know, nailing the coffin. I thought,
[22:53] Speaker 1: like a a big moment to score right before halftime.
[22:56] Speaker 1: But Sammy Walker makes an error and their mental when
[23:00] Speaker 1: I say they use their defense to attack the transition
[23:04] Speaker 1: straight away, someone picks it straight up off the ground.
[23:07] Speaker 1: They get on the attack, find Billy Burns. Billy Burns
[23:10] Speaker 1: almost scores, he gets tackled. They go pass, Nico gets
[23:14] Speaker 1: a quick play, the ball finds Trendle, Trindle kicks it
[23:16] Speaker 1: across the Mulataalo. But just that fitness and a lot
[23:20] Speaker 1: of teams off the back of an hour sometimes use
[23:22] Speaker 1: it and they get a breeze and they go, oh right, right,
[23:25] Speaker 1: we've got the ball back. Let's slow things down, let's
[23:27] Speaker 1: get into our set. They just picked it up. Transitions
[23:30] Speaker 1: so quickly went down. Their roosters were scattered. They get
[23:33] Speaker 1: the ball to the right man, Mullatalo and ends up scoring.
[23:35] Speaker 2: I really like that about the Sharks. They did less
[23:37] Speaker 2: set up football, and that's that's important because at times
[23:41] Speaker 2: in the game, like what you just said there, you know,
[23:43] Speaker 2: the attacks cook and there's opportunity on. Mate, Let's just
[23:46] Speaker 2: keep playing football. Let's trust ourselves. Let's back ourselves here,
[23:49] Speaker 2: because oftentimes in situations like that coupe, you'll see it,
[23:52] Speaker 2: they'll go may just take one of the middle. For us,
[23:55] Speaker 2: we used to call it back and they just take
[23:56] Speaker 2: as a settler.
[23:57] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[23:57] Speaker 2: All it does is settle the defense. It resets the defense.
[24:00] Speaker 2: So I loved about the Sharks. Whenever there was opportunity,
[24:03] Speaker 2: that backed themselves and they went for it. Trindle from
[24:05] Speaker 2: early in the game, you could see that that week
[24:08] Speaker 2: off has served him well. He looked fresh and you
[24:11] Speaker 2: go made he was really on. I think it's the
[24:13] Speaker 2: best game he's ever played as an NLE player. And
[24:16] Speaker 2: I actually think at the moment, because winning competition is
[24:19] Speaker 2: all about timing, I reckon, this is the best that
[24:21] Speaker 2: I've ever seen the Sharks play while Craig Fitsgiven has
[24:25] Speaker 2: been coached there. Yeah, and that one you just said
[24:29] Speaker 2: about there where the ball come out from Sammy Walker
[24:31] Speaker 2: a tear. What was crucial in that moment too, was
[24:34] Speaker 2: the fact that they didn't score on that play. I reckon,
[24:37] Speaker 2: if they score on that play, they go back and
[24:40] Speaker 2: look at that, and I reckon there might have been
[24:42] Speaker 2: a hand in there, But the fact that they didn't score,
[24:45] Speaker 2: and that's little anomally in the rules that they pushed
[24:49] Speaker 2: it on the following play and we're able to score.
[24:51] Speaker 1: And we're talking about the settlers before. A lot of
[24:52] Speaker 1: people use that settler I think as a cop out
[24:56] Speaker 1: to buy themselves time to think of what you're going
[24:58] Speaker 1: to do when your set Yeah, and you were both
[25:00] Speaker 1: half shitn here, but we got Jack here. Who's Jack's
[25:02] Speaker 1: actually got for those who are watch on YouTube, he
[25:05] Speaker 1: set himself up a little camera where we can actually
[25:07] Speaker 1: see him now.
[25:08] Speaker 3: Actually set up budget, set up budget aside.
[25:11] Speaker 1: Yeah, but you from a bloke who's actually played in
[25:15] Speaker 1: the forwards and back row, is that how you see
[25:18] Speaker 1: the settler as well? Sometimes because you're oftentimes the halves
[25:21] Speaker 1: are giving you the ball to just take it to
[25:23] Speaker 1: a point to settle it for them. Yeah, is that
[25:26] Speaker 1: how you see that?
[25:26] Speaker 3: There was I think the second try for the Broncos
[25:30] Speaker 3: you saw I'm not too sure which ford it was.
[25:33] Speaker 3: It might have been. I'm not too sure which one
[25:35] Speaker 3: it was, but I think Benny Hunt just dropped him
[25:38] Speaker 3: off and you saw him accelerate into the You saw
[25:42] Speaker 3: him accelerate into the line and there was nothing really doing.
[25:45] Speaker 3: Even the commentators were saying, there's nothing going on. And
[25:48] Speaker 3: then he just exploded like almost goose steps half through
[25:52] Speaker 3: the line. Gotta quick play the ball. And then they
[25:54] Speaker 3: have that that try on Tamale on the edge and
[25:56] Speaker 3: they just Catonis Dack just like tipped it on. I
[25:59] Speaker 3: think that's showed like if you are going to do
[26:01] Speaker 3: something like that, you sort of have to offer something
[26:03] Speaker 3: a bit different. You have to sort of get through
[26:05] Speaker 3: the line a bit more, and it's.
[26:06] Speaker 1: Hard to do.
[26:06] Speaker 3: I think a lot of that relies purely on your
[26:09] Speaker 3: physicality and your fitness when it goes to those like
[26:12] Speaker 3: back ends of the halves.
[26:13] Speaker 1: Great example, I mean, we are previewing now we have
[26:16] Speaker 1: we are we have moved on from that game. We
[26:18] Speaker 1: actually are on the Sharks first. The Roosters do right.
[26:20] Speaker 1: It's you see that even you're not listening.
[26:22] Speaker 3: It'll be nice if you use it'd be nice if
[26:24] Speaker 3: you use an example here and there, good.
[26:25] Speaker 2: But it nice. Can I use one here? And oftentimes
[26:28] Speaker 2: I'll talk about shot shot football when you're saying, like,
[26:32] Speaker 2: and it works at shot shot football. He's very, very
[26:34] Speaker 2: good against an enthusiastic, enthusiastic defense. And we're going to
[26:39] Speaker 2: talk about this later when we talk dogs storm and
[26:42] Speaker 2: it's working to one side of the field, gathering numbers,
[26:44] Speaker 2: and then immediately, don't set, don't reset, Just send the
[26:47] Speaker 2: ball to the other side of the field, as quickly
[26:50] Speaker 2: as you can to the far to the far post,
[26:52] Speaker 2: shot shot short, gather numbers, hit on the other side.
[26:55] Speaker 2: There's another one I want to do. There's another little
[26:58] Speaker 2: raw it's not the right word, but the little thing
[27:00] Speaker 2: in the game to have a look at, right, is this,
[27:03] Speaker 2: when I think it might be the Shark's second try,
[27:06] Speaker 2: have a look at what happens. Talakai gets tackled inches
[27:11] Speaker 2: from the try line, right underneath the posts. Now, what
[27:14] Speaker 2: happens in that instance when you have a when you've
[27:17] Speaker 2: got a player on your side that has been brought down,
[27:19] Speaker 2: and it is tackled right near the try line. Okay,
[27:22] Speaker 2: in and around the post. What happens is booze to
[27:24] Speaker 2: the honeypot. Have a look next time you see that situation.
[27:28] Speaker 2: How have a look at how many defenders are all
[27:31] Speaker 2: gathered around, gathered around just garden that inches off the ground.
[27:36] Speaker 2: There's five or six blokes. So on either edge there's opportunity.
[27:40] Speaker 2: So what you've got to do in that instance is
[27:42] Speaker 2: you've just got to go clinically. You just got to
[27:44] Speaker 2: go pass past to an edge really quick. There's a
[27:46] Speaker 2: fair chance you're going to score. Most teams stuff it
[27:49] Speaker 2: up because they say it's it's very very hard to
[27:51] Speaker 2: attack that close to the line. Well it isn't. Just
[27:54] Speaker 2: drive another one in close to the line, gather them in,
[27:56] Speaker 2: then hit them on an edge. Sharks do that. Their
[27:59] Speaker 2: second Talakai Neilli scores gets brought down. Just showed the line,
[28:03] Speaker 2: the roosters all condensed and around and they just go
[28:06] Speaker 2: bang bang to the edge and school I just it's
[28:09] Speaker 2: just a again, it's evidence that sharks just took the
[28:13] Speaker 2: opportunities that were there. We're very good at taking their opportunities.
[28:15] Speaker 1: Ye are. I think they were that they finally found that.
[28:18] Speaker 1: We said it last week, but they found their football.
[28:20] Speaker 1: They found it and I found coops.
[28:22] Speaker 2: And this is, for whatever reason, the combination of Brandon
[28:26] Speaker 2: Trindle and Nico Hines always Gunner's attention and critique. You know,
[28:32] Speaker 2: everyone's talking about who's the boss, and he's not doing this.
[28:35] Speaker 2: He's in good form, he's not well. I think what
[28:38] Speaker 2: we saw the other night was it working perfectly in
[28:41] Speaker 2: the fact that Trendle he had the hot hand, so
[28:45] Speaker 2: he was doing most of the finessing and the organizing.
[28:47] Speaker 2: What I loved about Nicko's game, did you have a
[28:50] Speaker 2: couple of hers? Yeah, a couple of hers. I loved
[28:52] Speaker 2: how aggressively you played. That's the thing I sit and go.
[28:56] Speaker 2: That's what how Trendle plays. The organizing and that's the stuff. Hey, Niko,
[29:00] Speaker 2: that's exactly how you play. I don't give a fuck
[29:02] Speaker 2: about getting making errors here and there. Mate, I just
[29:06] Speaker 2: need you taking that ball the line and just threatening
[29:09] Speaker 2: the defense all the time. The size you look at
[29:11] Speaker 2: your speed, look at your footwork. And Nico the Blake Brayley,
[29:18] Speaker 2: the elevation of his game in the last six seven
[29:20] Speaker 2: weeks has really elevated Nico. The scoop and goal of
[29:24] Speaker 2: Blake Brailey. That's encouraged Nico to play in the front
[29:27] Speaker 2: football less thinking, more just reacting and that's I think
[29:30] Speaker 2: that's Nico's best football yep.
[29:32] Speaker 1: And my back fence player of this game, we just said,
[29:35] Speaker 1: you just said it before Braden Tricky Trindle, I think
[29:38] Speaker 1: he had the hot hand in this game. Nico has
[29:40] Speaker 1: probably been their main man the last five or six weeks.
[29:45] Speaker 1: He's had the hot hand. He's been putting on all
[29:46] Speaker 1: the trices and stuff. I think Tricky was unbelievable and
[29:51] Speaker 1: it was always going to be a good battle battle
[29:52] Speaker 1: between and Mullatalo ended up getting the upper hand in
[29:58] Speaker 1: the end. Loves shits during love.
[30:00] Speaker 2: I love that mate. He brings the swagger and the menace.
[30:04] Speaker 3: You need it.
[30:05] Speaker 1: Yeah, But I thought Tricky was unbelievable and giving him
[30:08] Speaker 1: good opportunities and just always always found the right pass.
[30:12] Speaker 1: Always happened to find the right but I knew where
[30:14] Speaker 1: the space was and knew how to get it there.
[30:15] Speaker 2: And another thing really impressed before I do my back
[30:19] Speaker 2: fence player. The thing that really impressed me about the
[30:22] Speaker 2: Sharks is in that last ten minutes when the game
[30:24] Speaker 2: was on the line, they came up with a couple
[30:25] Speaker 2: of errors, but they held their nerve and they were
[30:27] Speaker 2: able to defend it. They showed mental toughness to get
[30:30] Speaker 2: through it. My back fence player and the reason they
[30:33] Speaker 2: brought this bloke to the club. He highlighted the other night,
[30:35] Speaker 2: Adam Fanula Blake mate. I said on the show just
[30:40] Speaker 2: an hour or so ago. If you're watching, I said,
[30:42] Speaker 2: when you talk about the greatest middlemen and yardage men
[30:45] Speaker 2: of all time or the ones that I've seen, I
[30:49] Speaker 2: go Glenn Lazarus, Jason Talmalala, Payne Hass, Adam Fanola Blake.
[30:55] Speaker 2: He is a phenomenon and there was periods in that
[30:58] Speaker 2: game where the game was really in the balance. He
[31:01] Speaker 2: just kept taking it up and just kept punching through.
[31:03] Speaker 2: And this was against the Rooster's pack mate that's been
[31:06] Speaker 2: dominating other packs in the back half of this year
[31:09] Speaker 2: and made at times he was just taking on himself
[31:11] Speaker 2: the bloke. The bloke is that he is a phenomenal football.
[31:16] Speaker 1: And some of the some of the front rowers who
[31:19] Speaker 1: probably don't get the recognition, like Glenn Lazarus's and paying
[31:23] Speaker 1: hasses because they don't play state of origin like Adam
[31:26] Speaker 1: Fanila Blake and Tamalolo in there both in their primes.
[31:30] Speaker 1: If they were to play state of origin there, they
[31:34] Speaker 1: would be recognized way more than they would because origin
[31:38] Speaker 1: is seen as the as the pinnacle. But they are
[31:40] Speaker 1: both like they are so unbelievable through that middle.
[31:44] Speaker 2: Fanilla Blake, you know the way he the way he
[31:47] Speaker 2: played L's you just go, yeah, Craig fitz Greenwood in
[31:51] Speaker 2: the box and gown. That's that's why we bought that bloke.
[31:55] Speaker 2: That's why we bought that bloke to win those matches
[31:59] Speaker 2: and to win next week and if we get to
[32:01] Speaker 2: the Grand Fold, to be able to win ground finals.
[32:02] Speaker 2: He's the type of bloke you need in the side.
[32:04] Speaker 2: They're the blokes that win titles.
[32:06] Speaker 1: To be a good game next week. All right, Matthew.
[32:08] Speaker 1: We were lucky enough to have a little drive around
[32:11] Speaker 1: in the new Volkswagen EV range, the ID four Pro
[32:14] Speaker 1: and the ID five. Big fan of it. I loved it.
[32:17] Speaker 1: Did you like it?
[32:18] Speaker 2: I really really enjoyed it.
[32:20] Speaker 1: I got to I got to say my favorite feature
[32:24] Speaker 1: the front seats. They've got the built in massage seats
[32:27] Speaker 1: and look, massads. I've been in some cars before where
[32:30] Speaker 1: they've they've claimed that they've got massage seats, but this
[32:33] Speaker 1: one's next level.
[32:34] Speaker 3: It was.
[32:35] Speaker 2: It was insane in fact, Coop, it is. Actually I'm
[32:39] Speaker 2: considering making a comeback after it because I tell you
[32:41] Speaker 2: what to make it? What my got it? Rugby league,
[32:44] Speaker 2: I mean camera monster are the best to me and
[32:45] Speaker 2: Dylan Brown thirty me and for ten years, dear lord
[32:49] Speaker 2: one point five of me in a lot of money.
[32:51] Speaker 2: I want I want in. I mean those massage seats.
[32:55] Speaker 2: I'm telling you, mate, these are the bulging disc in
[32:57] Speaker 2: the back and the neck loosen, the sadic nerve stretch,
[33:01] Speaker 2: the right hit flex.
[33:02] Speaker 1: I've got to say, if you made it, I don't
[33:04] Speaker 1: know if you'd want to take a pay cut to
[33:05] Speaker 1: go back into rugby league. Your bloody killing and how
[33:08] Speaker 1: many gigs have you got?
[33:09] Speaker 2: How many kids?
[33:09] Speaker 1: Too?
[33:12] Speaker 2: Yeah? Yeah, yeah, yeah that's true. I'd always find time.
[33:15] Speaker 2: I mean, I could do this podcast still if I
[33:17] Speaker 2: was playing. You've got Bill Eggs number, give me a call. Yeah,
[33:21] Speaker 2: what do you want to go to Melbourne? I would
[33:22] Speaker 2: you know?
[33:23] Speaker 1: Let me tell you right now. Okay, Yeah, they've trained
[33:26] Speaker 1: they trained pretty hard back in back in your day. Yeah,
[33:29] Speaker 1: but you wouldn't survive if we sent no, no, no,
[33:31] Speaker 1: if we sent prime Matthew John's down to Melbourne. I
[33:34] Speaker 1: don't reckon you'd last the preseason.
[33:37] Speaker 2: Okay, I said to your numerous times my last year
[33:40] Speaker 2: and rugby league at the Sharks was the hardest overtraining.
[33:43] Speaker 2: US guys scoffed off. But when we had Paul Galla
[33:45] Speaker 2: on the podcast, he confirmed it. He said it was
[33:48] Speaker 2: the hardest he'd ever trained. So I can if I
[33:50] Speaker 2: can handle that what Gal handled, give what he's done
[33:54] Speaker 2: his career, well, let me tell you I can handle
[33:56] Speaker 2: whatever you guys serve up down south of Melbourne.
[33:59] Speaker 1: Gal's still going. Maybe this car's got a bit of massuge.
[34:01] Speaker 1: Maybe it has no bulging disc.
[34:03] Speaker 2: On that man. Yeah, yes, but the range you know,
[34:06] Speaker 2: with an TV cart it offers up to five hundred
[34:08] Speaker 2: and forty four kilometers range. I was ready. You know
[34:11] Speaker 2: how long that is. You know if we were on
[34:12] Speaker 2: a trip that's Sydney to Armadah. You said, you ever
[34:15] Speaker 2: been Armadad.
[34:15] Speaker 1: I've been Armadad. I played a mate back in the
[34:18] Speaker 1: day at a school tripped Armadad. We played union comp
[34:21] Speaker 1: down there. Did, yeah, but I think killed it.
[34:23] Speaker 2: How'd you go win? Ah?
[34:25] Speaker 1: I can't remember it really, but I probably would have.
[34:29] Speaker 2: I love Armadah play. We've played a tril there as well,
[34:32] Speaker 2: two tries, three conversions? Who for two trysis nights?
[34:35] Speaker 1: Who'd you play against?
[34:37] Speaker 2: We played against Paramatta there.
[34:38] Speaker 1: Did you Yes? Is there a big rugby league community
[34:41] Speaker 1: in Armadall a huge.
[34:43] Speaker 2: Regular community back in the day They had all these
[34:46] Speaker 2: specialized camps back in the day at the end of
[34:48] Speaker 2: every in December in Armadale is to host them there
[34:51] Speaker 2: at the University Universe. Now what Koper? What a university is?
[34:54] Speaker 2: It's a place of learning.
[34:56] Speaker 1: I know what university is, right, Although I didn't go,
[34:58] Speaker 1: I did. I did a UNI. I did one thing
[35:01] Speaker 1: semester of UNI.
[35:02] Speaker 2: It sounds like really spell it.
[35:05] Speaker 1: I can't even pronounce it. I did do one semester
[35:07] Speaker 1: when I first moved to Melbourne. I did the first
[35:09] Speaker 1: because they said for all you young players you need
[35:12] Speaker 1: if you're going to play in the NRL, you also
[35:14] Speaker 1: have to be doing studying on.
[35:16] Speaker 2: The side, have a backup plan.
[35:17] Speaker 1: So I did it for one semester and then I
[35:20] Speaker 1: deferred relentlessly for two years.
[35:23] Speaker 2: Well Jack Jack went to university. You can tell by
[35:26] Speaker 2: the way he handles his sort of addresses himself. Tresh
[35:29] Speaker 2: went to university. Not as obvious, I'll to you.
[35:32] Speaker 1: You know, yeah, obvious, clearly not well she, she claims,
[35:34] Speaker 1: she goes to university as the most of us, yet
[35:37] Speaker 1: she is the least articulate. And I say this relentlessly.
[35:40] Speaker 1: She can barely stringer sentence together sometimes.
[35:42] Speaker 2: Matt, what time are you going to get home from
[35:44] Speaker 2: the pub? Matt way home at two hours late?
[35:46] Speaker 1: Hello? I what I will say as well? On the charging,
[35:50] Speaker 1: because yeah, five hundred and forty four kilometers, that's pretty handy.
[35:53] Speaker 1: A lot of people, and my knock on EV's has
[35:55] Speaker 1: always been, well, where am I going to find a
[35:57] Speaker 1: place to charge? It might take a while. They've got
[35:59] Speaker 1: quick charge incapabilities. Now it charges from ten percent to
[36:02] Speaker 1: eighty percent in around twenty two minutes.
[36:05] Speaker 2: That is that's insane.
[36:06] Speaker 1: That's pretty handy.
[36:07] Speaker 2: That is very that is insane. That's very very good.
[36:10] Speaker 1: That's quick because the knocks always been oh well, yeah,
[36:13] Speaker 1: it's not as quick, but twenty two minutes. If you're
[36:15] Speaker 1: stopping on a highway, you stop in twenty two minutes
[36:18] Speaker 1: and you have a feed, go to the toilet. They
[36:20] Speaker 1: the picnic rug have a snack ring ring on one
[36:23] Speaker 1: of those emergency phones.
[36:24] Speaker 2: Yeah sounds good, coops.
[36:26] Speaker 1: Thanks Matthew. Let's get back to the podcast and then
[36:29] Speaker 1: to the Saturday afternoon game. Penrith Panthers played the Warriors
[36:32] Speaker 1: over in New Zealand afternoon here at night in New Zealand.
[36:36] Speaker 1: But it was bloody, an absolute dog fight the first half.
[36:41] Speaker 1: Horrible weather, great march. It was good to what yet
[36:45] Speaker 1: Warriors brought a physicality but I hadn't really, I hadn't
[36:49] Speaker 1: seen a lot of the year, given injuries and whatnot.
[36:52] Speaker 1: But they give it to Penrith at the start. They
[36:55] Speaker 1: give it to them.
[36:55] Speaker 2: The wars really dominated long periods of the game with
[36:58] Speaker 2: their physicality. But mate, Penrith had the smarts because they
[37:04] Speaker 2: had the seven. Yeah, that's it, Like it's just the
[37:06] Speaker 2: importance you know, if putting on the putting in the
[37:09] Speaker 2: right kick at the right time and little things like that,
[37:12] Speaker 2: you know, making sure and Isaiao had a lot to
[37:14] Speaker 2: do with as well, making sure, Okay, the ball's got
[37:17] Speaker 2: to get there, let's get it there.
[37:18] Speaker 1: And we and we did say that in the preview
[37:20] Speaker 1: during the week we said that the Warrior's side is
[37:23] Speaker 1: a great side, but they do lack the creativity. That's
[37:26] Speaker 1: that's where we were going to question in comparison to
[37:29] Speaker 1: Penrith Panthers who had Nathan Cleary. You saw with the
[37:31] Speaker 1: weather as well, it actually played into that into the
[37:35] Speaker 1: Warrior's hands because because it was so wet, there wasn't
[37:38] Speaker 1: a lot of creative play happening. But they were down
[37:41] Speaker 1: there for the first half. Warriors had so many play
[37:44] Speaker 1: the balls inside and they just couldn't create points. They
[37:47] Speaker 1: got they kicked the two points early, but they just
[37:50] Speaker 1: couldn't create points. Then you see Penrith go down there
[37:53] Speaker 1: when momentum finally shifts, Nathan Cleary just building pressure the biggest,
[37:59] Speaker 1: the biggest moment, and I saw in the impact in
[38:01] Speaker 1: the game because it ended up sort of blowing out
[38:03] Speaker 1: the schoolne but it didn't The school line did not
[38:05] Speaker 1: represent the game, not at all. Nathan clear the pressure
[38:09] Speaker 1: that he put on the Warriors forward pack in defense
[38:13] Speaker 1: just by he did an early kick in the right
[38:15] Speaker 1: corner on third tackle kept him down there and then
[38:18] Speaker 1: after that he kicked. He kicked about three or four
[38:21] Speaker 1: repeat set he did, and there was a ten to
[38:23] Speaker 1: fifteen minute period where the Warriors didn't even see the ball.
[38:27] Speaker 1: You are spot on.
[38:28] Speaker 2: It took a little while for them to really get
[38:30] Speaker 2: their template on. And Penrith's template is like you just said,
[38:33] Speaker 2: kick long early, chase ferociously, and defend like killers. Attack
[38:38] Speaker 2: like you just said before, attack through your defense. And
[38:41] Speaker 2: they did that, and the first time they got one
[38:43] Speaker 2: of those suffocation sets on where they got him in
[38:46] Speaker 2: the corner and kept going at him, they scored the
[38:48] Speaker 2: following set, and then not long after, You're right, Not
[38:51] Speaker 2: long after they went Nathan went repeat set, blaze to lunge,
[38:55] Speaker 2: you went repeat set, Nathan went repeat set, and mate,
[38:59] Speaker 2: you're right. The Warriors didn't have the ball for almost
[39:02] Speaker 2: ten minutes. Then they go into half time and you
[39:05] Speaker 2: come out after half time and Brad Schnyder scores a
[39:08] Speaker 2: soft trip from Dobb me half, Well, why do you
[39:10] Speaker 2: score a soft try? Because it was fatigue and it
[39:13] Speaker 2: was pressure, that physical and mental pressure that they built.
[39:18] Speaker 2: I will say, like, I've got so much respect for
[39:19] Speaker 2: the Warriors for the amount of players and crucial players
[39:23] Speaker 2: they lost. Metcalfe the best example there, but a forward
[39:26] Speaker 2: leader of the quality of Mitch Barnett to leave him.
[39:30] Speaker 2: But there's certain things that like, like early in the game,
[39:36] Speaker 2: when you play a team like Penrith and the underdog,
[39:39] Speaker 2: what they needed to do early Warriors is strike a
[39:42] Speaker 2: blow early right, strike a blow and suddenly you find
[39:44] Speaker 2: you pincher try early six nil and suddenly that little
[39:48] Speaker 2: bit of pressure goes on Penrith. Then what happens is
[39:51] Speaker 2: you get a penalty and you take the two points.
[39:54] Speaker 2: It's eight nils. So all of a sudden you're outside
[39:56] Speaker 2: of that six point split. And that's how like to
[40:00] Speaker 2: cause an upset. A lot of times, you've got to
[40:01] Speaker 2: start well and then bit by bit you just scoreboard
[40:05] Speaker 2: pressure goes on the red hot favorites. And that was
[40:08] Speaker 2: the opportunity they had. They had an opportunity, had a
[40:10] Speaker 2: penalty early. A tenor boy didn't put it out. That
[40:15] Speaker 2: is unforgivable, unforgivable at that level the importance of that game.
[40:20] Speaker 2: To not put it out in that situation, you know,
[40:22] Speaker 2: that's that is bread and butter for a playmaker. You've
[40:26] Speaker 2: got to put it out in a finals match when
[40:28] Speaker 2: you know you're the underdog and you're playing against a
[40:31] Speaker 2: high flying team, a team of the quality of Penrith.
[40:35] Speaker 2: They give you an opportunity that you've got to take it.
[40:38] Speaker 1: And now you see like that was you saw a
[40:42] Speaker 1: little bit of weakness from Penrith that start of the
[40:44] Speaker 1: game where Worries sort of probably got it over and physically.
[40:46] Speaker 1: But now you there is an eerie feeling about any
[40:51] Speaker 1: team that comes up against Pendri I would not want
[40:55] Speaker 1: to be playing Pendrith after that sort of win. But
[40:58] Speaker 1: have you got a back fence player of this match?
[41:00] Speaker 2: Well, I'll just say just have them. I get some
[41:04] Speaker 2: random notes. I've got to say this. Paul Alamodi. Alamodi
[41:08] Speaker 2: saved that forty twenty, pushed it in, then found he
[41:11] Speaker 2: found a way of getting it out of the end
[41:13] Speaker 2: goal and then a few tackles later, Nathan kicks, bounces, bounces,
[41:18] Speaker 2: a lucky bounced get it and they go through and
[41:21] Speaker 2: you go, oh that's luck. Yeah, but you make your
[41:22] Speaker 2: own luck.
[41:23] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[41:23] Speaker 2: That's a perfect example of a bloke that has just
[41:27] Speaker 2: done in this incredible play and got out there the
[41:29] Speaker 2: effort and suddenly you get lucky.
[41:32] Speaker 1: But had a mix ye, I thought he had a
[41:34] Speaker 1: bit of a mixnight They went after him a lot
[41:37] Speaker 1: in the air Force. Couple of errors but yeah, that
[41:40] Speaker 1: moment was a very key moment. You see why Ivan
[41:43] Speaker 1: picked him now.
[41:44] Speaker 2: Two blokes off the bench for Penrith to deserve great praise.
[41:47] Speaker 2: Luke Garner I thought it was great when he come on.
[41:49] Speaker 2: But Liam Henry, I think Liam Henry's best game as
[41:53] Speaker 2: an NRLE player. He come off off the bench. He
[41:55] Speaker 2: gave him an enormous lyft.
[41:57] Speaker 1: Isaiah Papalii was really good too.
[41:59] Speaker 2: He's my back defense player. Oh was he ye in
[42:01] Speaker 2: those conditions in the wet, in the wet, tricky conditions,
[42:05] Speaker 2: which was a grind and the Warriors really wanted them
[42:08] Speaker 2: with physicality. I thought he was fantastic.
[42:10] Speaker 1: Yeah, Ice I baby shout out to him. Mine was
[42:13] Speaker 1: Nathan clear If just for reinforce what I said before.
[42:16] Speaker 1: I think in big games, kicking games and kicking threats
[42:22] Speaker 1: where you turn him over, that's the most important thing.
[42:25] Speaker 1: And he played so simple built pressure. It was good
[42:28] Speaker 1: to see the old people actually going for repeat sets
[42:31] Speaker 1: and probably getting rewarded for it. Ever since the short
[42:33] Speaker 1: dropouts coming to the game, people don't really go They
[42:36] Speaker 1: all go for attacking kicks to try to go for
[42:38] Speaker 1: a try because you don't really get rewarded for repeat
[42:40] Speaker 1: sets these days, because everyone's good at getting the ball
[42:43] Speaker 1: back off a short dropout. But yeah, I thought Nathan
[42:46] Speaker 1: did an unbelievable job. Now to the Friday night Oh yeah.
[42:52] Speaker 3: Sorry, ask is the back fence player is inspired by
[42:56] Speaker 3: our man Bruis.
[42:58] Speaker 1: Of course, yeah, yeah, I wanted to say it, but
[43:00] Speaker 1: I thought, you know what, you know, let's we'll just
[43:03] Speaker 1: let the listeners may piece it together. Probably not, but yeah,
[43:07] Speaker 1: shout out to Bruises.
[43:08] Speaker 3: And also I have a shout out to my major
[43:10] Speaker 3: sponsor for this week, which is the Old Bard Tavern,
[43:12] Speaker 3: which was providing lots and lots of good times through
[43:15] Speaker 3: everyone up at Old Bar over the weekend.
[43:17] Speaker 2: It's got back tonight with a couple of mates.
[43:19] Speaker 3: Yeah, golf the Yeah, it's they got all this merchandise,
[43:23] Speaker 3: reverse hats, Old barsaving Jack.
[43:26] Speaker 1: Jack's getting sponsors. Jack's getting sponsors now yeah yeah, side sponsors.
[43:31] Speaker 1: Yeah it's thanks. Yeah, sorry that the back fence aloys
[43:35] Speaker 1: turned him down because he's just heavy breathing true Blue
[43:38] Speaker 1: brew Yeah hey, true Blue Yeah, yeah, Bruiser. This was
[43:41] Speaker 1: his bib Bruiser. But I also I look at the
[43:44] Speaker 1: back fence player because back back being a back fence.
[43:47] Speaker 1: You don't need to be an NRL player just to
[43:49] Speaker 1: be back fence. I look at the people who absolutely
[43:51] Speaker 1: obliterate themselves dad, like you on the piece on the weekend. Yeah,
[43:54] Speaker 1: and then they wind up on the back fence on
[43:56] Speaker 1: a Monday morning and just get after their week And
[43:59] Speaker 1: I think that's a lot of our listeners. A lot
[44:01] Speaker 1: of our listeners listening to this in the car right now.
[44:03] Speaker 1: They've had thirty schooners over the weekend. They're driving, they drive,
[44:07] Speaker 1: they're driving, but like it's out of their system. But
[44:10] Speaker 1: they're driving into work right now thinking how am I
[44:12] Speaker 1: going to get through this? And they are just winding
[44:14] Speaker 1: up off the back fence, trying to get to Friday.
[44:16] Speaker 2: People, just trust me on this. Oftentimes on a Friday Saturday,
[44:19] Speaker 2: we've got a big Sunday night show coming up, certainly
[44:21] Speaker 2: in finals. You know, going to take it easy this week.
[44:24] Speaker 1: But guess what I never do and you never will,
[44:27] Speaker 1: never will Storm versus Bulldogs Friday night footy.
[44:31] Speaker 2: And it was entertaining game coupe, second verse, third really
[44:35] Speaker 2: enjoyed it. But both sides, including your Melbourne Storm, I
[44:38] Speaker 2: got to pick up significantly if they're going to win
[44:40] Speaker 2: this title, I could.
[44:42] Speaker 1: Not agree more. I looked at this side, I mean
[44:44] Speaker 1: the game. Sorry, and Melbourne have always been going to
[44:47] Speaker 1: just grinding wins out even when they're not necessarily playing well.
[44:51] Speaker 1: But I think this time of the year, I think
[44:54] Speaker 1: they'd be really disappointed in not playing. They're not playing
[44:58] Speaker 1: their best football in five finals. They pride themselves on
[45:02] Speaker 1: wanting to go into the game and not beating themselves
[45:05] Speaker 1: and not get if you play good, the only way
[45:07] Speaker 1: you're getting beat is by the other team playing better.
[45:11] Speaker 1: This game, I thought both sides both played quite average.
[45:15] Speaker 1: A lot of errors gave the opportunity to the other
[45:18] Speaker 1: side to actually take it with both hands. No side
[45:20] Speaker 1: really grabbed it by the horns. Yeah, I think Melbourne
[45:24] Speaker 1: at will have a lot to review this week.
[45:26] Speaker 2: Last week, I've never seen Belly out lock this at
[45:30] Speaker 2: this time of the year.
[45:31] Speaker 1: Like even.
[45:35] Speaker 2: Even after the game in the press conference, I'm trying
[45:39] Speaker 2: to find the right word, it was still almost like
[45:41] Speaker 2: a bit of a softness to him, like you know,
[45:43] Speaker 2: he's usually he's got that hard edge. As part of me,
[45:46] Speaker 2: I was watching him going with no Jerome perhaps wasn't
[45:49] Speaker 2: playing the other day, but there's no Nelson Is he
[45:52] Speaker 2: sort of resigned? Is he sort of looking going, mate?
[45:55] Speaker 2: If we piece this title, well, like, I don't know,
[45:59] Speaker 2: maybe just reading the completely wrong. I just haven't seen
[46:02] Speaker 2: him like this at this time of the year. Ever.
[46:05] Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't think. I don't think so. I don't
[46:08] Speaker 1: think at all he'd be thinking like that because they've
[46:10] Speaker 1: got the troops and they proved it the other night
[46:13] Speaker 1: with pasit how good Jonah was and wish you when
[46:16] Speaker 1: he come off the bench. We said that they were
[46:17] Speaker 1: probably going to swap them. But I think without perhaps
[46:23] Speaker 1: without Hughsy, they can definitely still win this competition. And
[46:26] Speaker 1: I think No One Belly and how he is day
[46:28] Speaker 1: to day, maybe he's a little bit worn down from
[46:31] Speaker 1: the year and it's disguising itself as softness, but he
[46:36] Speaker 1: he'll be giving it to him and driving them very
[46:38] Speaker 1: hard this week, I guarantee you.
[46:39] Speaker 2: Early in their game, and I would say, basically the
[46:42] Speaker 2: first half, Storm really dominated yardage early on, mate, They
[46:46] Speaker 2: were just punch them through all the time, and I
[46:47] Speaker 2: was going, holy, do look at this yet at halftime
[46:51] Speaker 2: the school was eight six and that flat of the dogs,
[46:55] Speaker 2: but it was it was it was a reward to
[46:57] Speaker 2: the dogs. For their their defense and their quarter is
[47:01] Speaker 2: very good. Like they missed some tackles to the game.
[47:03] Speaker 2: But once they you know, once a team starts to
[47:05] Speaker 2: attack their line, you know they are good. I mean,
[47:07] Speaker 2: errors are really hurting them. I mean, I don't want
[47:10] Speaker 2: to sound boring. You're talking about errors. I got to
[47:12] Speaker 2: stop making errors. Well, thanks god, but they're really hurting them.
[47:14] Speaker 2: And dogs are going Dogs have a very good defense,
[47:18] Speaker 2: structural structural defense, but the amount of errors they're making,
[47:22] Speaker 2: even their excellent defense can't absorb them. And that's if
[47:26] Speaker 2: they can just eliminate a lot of these unforced errors.
[47:29] Speaker 2: My god, they're going to find a big difference in
[47:32] Speaker 2: their game. The storm first try, I'll say this, you
[47:37] Speaker 2: know one I said, this defense structurally was good. This one.
[47:43] Speaker 2: They really went at Lucky Galvin a few times. And
[47:45] Speaker 2: that first try come about. And if you go and
[47:47] Speaker 2: watch the people, this is really interesting. Now. One of
[47:50] Speaker 2: the golden rules of defense is that you do not slide.
[47:53] Speaker 2: You don't slide outward until the ball goes past you.
[47:57] Speaker 2: That is a golden rule of defense. And what they
[47:59] Speaker 2: do is the ball goes across the munster and he
[48:02] Speaker 2: got Joe Chan who is flying on an in straight
[48:05] Speaker 2: line on the inside shoulder of Locky Galvin. Now get
[48:08] Speaker 2: Lockey in his mind. You can see he wants to
[48:11] Speaker 2: slide out. He's trying to protect the potential three on
[48:15] Speaker 2: two on the outside and he's holding, he's holding, he's holding,
[48:18] Speaker 2: and then all of a sudden, Months just delays the
[48:21] Speaker 2: pass a quarter of a second and Locke loses his
[48:25] Speaker 2: nerve and slides and Chain goes straight through straight heylikt
[48:30] Speaker 2: he went straight through. They got tackled there. Then Jonah
[48:33] Speaker 2: threw the ball to Eli Katoa, who's scored. But the
[48:35] Speaker 2: pebble in the pond was pebble and the problem with
[48:38] Speaker 2: the Joe Chan with Lockey just holding and that's just inexperience,
[48:41] Speaker 2: like he's still a young guy. But hold, hold, hold,
[48:46] Speaker 2: and I'm gonna slide. And that just beautiful little delay
[48:50] Speaker 2: from Munster and just goes, just goes straight.
[48:52] Speaker 1: That's what it's. It's it's your train. It so hard
[48:56] Speaker 1: and you try to get yourself in that mindset of
[48:58] Speaker 1: don't slide, don't you gotta protect your side shoulder, don't
[49:00] Speaker 1: take a dummy. But when you got camera monster and
[49:04] Speaker 1: they have shapes around you, it's very hard. But I
[49:06] Speaker 1: agree with you. And you know what I loved about
[49:09] Speaker 1: having a look at if you go back and have
[49:10] Speaker 1: a look at the highlights of a lot of Melbourne's tries,
[49:12] Speaker 1: and we said, how in big games you don't you don't.
[49:15] Speaker 1: It's not the big players that actually score the tries.
[49:18] Speaker 1: Sometimes it's good kicks for your attacking threats, or getting
[49:21] Speaker 1: quick play the balls and playing that. You saw the
[49:25] Speaker 1: quick play the balls that Melbourne were able to create
[49:27] Speaker 1: with Harry Grant coming back into the side three of
[49:30] Speaker 1: their key tries that that like the one you just said,
[49:32] Speaker 1: car toa. They get the quick play the ball through
[49:34] Speaker 1: Joe Chan They go one pass, two pass, nothing actually doing.
[49:38] Speaker 1: They kind of just found Katoa and because it was
[49:40] Speaker 1: such a quick playaball, they slid and Ellie went straight
[49:43] Speaker 1: through and scored the And then later that first half
[49:46] Speaker 1: Lasarti scores on the short side where they get a
[49:49] Speaker 1: quick play the ball monster goes down little short ball
[49:51] Speaker 1: Loasardi scores and then in that second half the real
[49:54] Speaker 1: game breaking try Stefano, Harry gets out, drop Stefano off,
[49:59] Speaker 1: he gets an off to Harry Wishy, the contortionists who
[50:02] Speaker 1: just come on fresh legs, just punches a hole using
[50:06] Speaker 1: his foot instincts, drops whatever they've got. He just punches
[50:09] Speaker 1: a hole off Harry kick out hits him with everything.
[50:11] Speaker 1: He ends up scoring. Like those three tries. Very simple things,
[50:14] Speaker 1: but they are playing off the back of a quick
[50:16] Speaker 1: playable really leans in the Melbourne hand that one with.
[50:18] Speaker 2: Months to gun up the short side in that at
[50:20] Speaker 2: instance there coop it made by everyone doing their job well.
[50:26] Speaker 2: Made it look easy. Harry just taking a step forward
[50:29] Speaker 2: and getting months to pass the market depth Munster identifying
[50:33] Speaker 2: his target defender and pulling him out of shape, and
[50:35] Speaker 2: his ball and his whole runner just hitting the right
[50:37] Speaker 2: half of the hole at the right time.
[50:39] Speaker 1: It was good. It was a good coach. Very simple,
[50:42] Speaker 1: very old school coaching rules, but they did it well.
[50:45] Speaker 2: A couple of big moments in the game which I'm
[50:47] Speaker 2: going to talk about the second try in the Dogs
[50:49] Speaker 2: in a minute. Remind me that if I forget as
[50:51] Speaker 2: you get to a certain age and you.
[50:52] Speaker 1: Get tied, that's what drinking does.
[50:54] Speaker 2: Yeah, it does. The introduction of TB Sexton bottom of
[50:58] Speaker 2: the field, Yeah, and look it they looked a different
[51:02] Speaker 2: side when he came on and Galvin went to his
[51:04] Speaker 2: natural role at six. They just looked a better side.
[51:08] Speaker 2: Burton I thought played very good at left center. We'll
[51:11] Speaker 2: save what we think is going to happen this week
[51:13] Speaker 2: for the preview. Wants some stuff to talk about there.
[51:15] Speaker 2: But in my opinion, Sexton is in a little bit
[51:17] Speaker 2: of doubt. They're saying it's a it's a sternum or
[51:20] Speaker 2: like a shoulder. Yeah, so I don't know where where
[51:24] Speaker 2: is that. He'd expect him to play Crichton and Tuala
[51:29] Speaker 2: highly up got a break. He won't play Crichton. Yeah,
[51:34] Speaker 2: I've seen reports streamed out.
[51:35] Speaker 1: They say Liz Frank at one point, which is you
[51:38] Speaker 1: don't play with I don't know.
[51:40] Speaker 2: They said if they if they get through this game,
[51:42] Speaker 2: he's a chance the next week, but he'd be extreme doubt.
[51:45] Speaker 2: I want to talk about that. I want to talk
[51:48] Speaker 2: about the second try firstly. I want to talk about it.
[51:50] Speaker 2: I want to talk about that first try where it
[51:53] Speaker 2: was Sexton's first touch of the wall. He went on
[51:56] Speaker 2: what they did there. They did something there that they
[51:58] Speaker 2: didn't do nearly enough in the game, and that was
[52:01] Speaker 2: isolate Villi Army kickout with Jonah j Peas like Jonah
[52:05] Speaker 2: Jonah's an edge defender. You're noticed like, mate, you've got
[52:07] Speaker 2: kickouts big, it's got footwork. Yeah, And they hit him
[52:11] Speaker 2: there and he went over and did that thing, did
[52:14] Speaker 2: a pass which bounce off and he got like, that's
[52:18] Speaker 2: that's the drama he can cause. He once in the
[52:20] Speaker 2: second half they did a shot shot, they went down
[52:23] Speaker 2: one side, went one to three passes to kick out
[52:26] Speaker 2: again and he got the ball off to Burton who
[52:28] Speaker 2: scored again. The press the presence of kick out, they
[52:32] Speaker 2: didn't do that enough. They played two match set up
[52:34] Speaker 2: football against an enthusiastic defense like Melbourne, you take him
[52:38] Speaker 2: to an edge to gather numbers and you hit him
[52:40] Speaker 2: out of the fast side. That is that is a
[52:42] Speaker 2: very very strong principle against good defensive sides. But you
[52:46] Speaker 2: just said something before, you said about when you look
[52:49] Speaker 2: at tries at this time of the year, where they
[52:52] Speaker 2: stem from, and guys just doing simple things right the
[52:58] Speaker 2: second try once you're going to have some people right.
[53:01] Speaker 2: And this just shows you the importance of plays two
[53:04] Speaker 2: and three. Now they're doing a yard set at the
[53:08] Speaker 2: time the Bulldogs and at the time they're struggling to
[53:10] Speaker 2: get for a little bit. But on this what leads
[53:12] Speaker 2: to this try is this and again a little thing
[53:15] Speaker 2: that makes an enormous difference, and it's Jacob Kraz right
[53:19] Speaker 2: coop Jack. Jacob Kraz gets the ball and he just
[53:23] Speaker 2: straightens behind the ruck and he punches half through, not
[53:25] Speaker 2: a bit and it didn't make a break. But he
[53:27] Speaker 2: punches through, gets his body through the line, gets up,
[53:31] Speaker 2: plays the ball quick. He makes about twelve meters. What
[53:34] Speaker 2: happens there still Tupennur, who by the way, my god,
[53:37] Speaker 2: what a player. He gets on the back of that
[53:39] Speaker 2: and he goes bang. He takes twelve meters. Now what
[53:41] Speaker 2: happens in that instance the playmakers, if the dogs suddenly
[53:45] Speaker 2: go from saying, oh mate, we're going to kick ourselves
[53:47] Speaker 2: out of trouble, to going mate, let's put an attacking
[53:49] Speaker 2: kick in. They put an attacking kick in Tabe sexton
[53:53] Speaker 2: and Nick Mooney drops the ball. They get scrum fooed.
[53:57] Speaker 2: In that set of six they score. Jacob Kraz scores.
[54:00] Speaker 2: The right side is a double Karraz, but he starts
[54:03] Speaker 2: at two or three minutes earlier. By simply getting forward,
[54:07] Speaker 2: getting on his front and playing the ball quick. The
[54:10] Speaker 2: most basic, simple fundamental at the start of a set
[54:14] Speaker 2: led to a try that happened two or three minutes later.
[54:17] Speaker 2: That is just the importance, the importance of those basic
[54:21] Speaker 2: principles on getting forward and plays one, two and three.
[54:25] Speaker 2: And if you look at Penrith, one of the cornerstones
[54:28] Speaker 2: of their success in the last five years has been
[54:31] Speaker 2: to getting forward on early tackles and Edward's dominating that
[54:35] Speaker 2: yard each.
[54:35] Speaker 1: It's a snowball effect and it's that hard. It's hard
[54:38] Speaker 1: enough to try to make a dominant tackle and get
[54:41] Speaker 1: someone on their back on a slow play the ball
[54:43] Speaker 1: when it's a big blow. When Karaz and get quick
[54:45] Speaker 1: play the balls for whatever team they it's so hard
[54:49] Speaker 1: as a defense when you're on the back foot to
[54:51] Speaker 1: try to win the tackle. It just continues to snowball
[54:54] Speaker 1: right into the fifth tackle.
[54:55] Speaker 2: Well, we know that the Broncos. Magal sort of rests
[54:58] Speaker 2: this his team up this week. Got the week off Melbourne.
[55:01] Speaker 2: What do you think Melbourne will do.
[55:03] Speaker 1: They had a beer on they knew that they had
[55:05] Speaker 1: a beer on the weekend. They'll they'll get some time off.
[55:09] Speaker 1: I imagine there's a few boys this time of the
[55:12] Speaker 1: oar car and some niggles and whatnot, So I imagine
[55:14] Speaker 1: that they'll probably train during the week, try to get
[55:16] Speaker 1: the weekend off potentially, maybe like a Friday Saturday.
[55:19] Speaker 2: Just a special mention when I'm mad. I was going
[55:20] Speaker 2: to ask you about Mounster's ankle, but shout out to Munster.
[55:23] Speaker 2: I thought his second half was phenomenal.
[55:26] Speaker 1: It wasn't.
[55:26] Speaker 2: It wasn't a typical Monster performance. In the fact that
[55:29] Speaker 2: I found a lot cop Munster was doing a lot
[55:31] Speaker 2: of half field plays, which I don't think suits Munster
[55:36] Speaker 2: quite as much. In the fact that when he wants
[55:38] Speaker 2: to run the ball from a half field position, the gaps,
[55:40] Speaker 2: you're not spreading the defense and they can sort of
[55:42] Speaker 2: umbrella him a little bit and sort of place him
[55:45] Speaker 2: in a phone box. If I'm Monster, well, if I'm really,
[55:47] Speaker 2: I'm telling Monster, hey, listen, if you're looking to run
[55:50] Speaker 2: the football, have a bit of impact with your running game.
[55:52] Speaker 2: Let's work the ball past the far post and catch
[55:54] Speaker 2: the ball with a little bit more width. Okay, first receiver,
[55:58] Speaker 2: but outside the second or third defenders so they can't
[56:01] Speaker 2: outside in you. Yeah, it'll make them defend passively, and
[56:04] Speaker 2: that's all Monster needs. But his second half was so
[56:07] Speaker 2: gutsy he just kept taking it up.
[56:10] Speaker 1: When he went to fullback, I love one run against
[56:12] Speaker 1: the full back and he doesn't have to organize. He
[56:14] Speaker 1: gets in. He takes those most fullbacks take the last
[56:16] Speaker 1: carry before the kick so that they can get a
[56:19] Speaker 1: full kick. Chase line in the kick, and then the
[56:21] Speaker 1: fullback's already back there. He just runs back when he
[56:24] Speaker 1: was in there trying to get a quick playable there.
[56:25] Speaker 1: He looks so dangerous a couple of times, just making
[56:27] Speaker 1: people miss. I'd love to see him bring more of
[56:31] Speaker 1: that to his five eight game, because I felt like
[56:33] Speaker 1: there was a lot of he was trying to organize
[56:34] Speaker 1: a lot of stuff that first half and he couldn't
[56:36] Speaker 1: get his game on.
[56:37] Speaker 2: Jack found something today which we might use going forward.
[56:41] Speaker 2: Jack tell us what this might or might not be
[56:44] Speaker 2: interesting interesting sometime in the next couple of weeks when
[56:49] Speaker 2: we prove you and review, Jack coops what you found today?
[56:53] Speaker 3: Yeah, well, the camera's already gone, so that's a great
[56:55] Speaker 3: start to the camera. Sorry, guys, having main sponsor.
[57:01] Speaker 1: What I found was my.
[57:02] Speaker 3: Old algebra Brook algebra book and papers from my HC.
[57:07] Speaker 3: I was doing Pythagoras theorem, and then on the back
[57:09] Speaker 3: of it is Dad's entire game plan for the one
[57:12] Speaker 3: six to seven model for the twenty seventeen Melbourne storm
[57:15] Speaker 3: side with all his notes, and he wrote down quotes
[57:20] Speaker 3: that he had with Kray during the twenty sixteen season
[57:23] Speaker 3: and how he yeah and how he needed to change
[57:26] Speaker 3: things up, and then it talked about it had like
[57:28] Speaker 3: quotes in it. I've got Pythagoras theorem on the other side,
[57:32] Speaker 3: and then on the.
[57:33] Speaker 2: Other side stuff on the other side.
[57:35] Speaker 3: It literally says like in quotations like has Cooper will
[57:38] Speaker 3: run the show. He has the full stick of it,
[57:40] Speaker 3: and then Cameron and Billy, Billy has the say, but
[57:43] Speaker 3: they'll swap rolls on Billy's mark and it's pretty crazy.
[57:46] Speaker 2: So we can pull that out and we'll read through
[57:49] Speaker 2: some of it, and I'll talk about that principle, which
[57:52] Speaker 2: my principal was one two three football. So we'll talk
[57:54] Speaker 2: about that a lot.
[57:55] Speaker 1: We'll do and we'll frame it and we'll auction it
[57:58] Speaker 1: off to our listener.
[58:00] Speaker 2: But not want that, No, I.
[58:02] Speaker 1: Don't know, but minimum bid twenty grand because that shit's
[58:05] Speaker 1: important and it wins premierships. Back fence our back fans
[58:09] Speaker 1: player for this game. Now, I got two blogs I
[58:11] Speaker 1: want to shout out here. This is more of a
[58:13] Speaker 1: feel good one Sex Toby Sexton. I think I actually
[58:17] Speaker 1: think he was probably I think Kickout was amazing for them,
[58:20] Speaker 1: but I think Toby was the real game breaker for that.
[58:22] Speaker 1: They looked a different side when he came on, So
[58:24] Speaker 1: I think he was one of their best players out there.
[58:26] Speaker 1: But reward for effort during the year, had a tough
[58:31] Speaker 1: time getting dropped the media scrutiny everything that he's gone
[58:36] Speaker 1: through this year, and a week is a long time
[58:39] Speaker 1: something as a player that you get told when you're
[58:41] Speaker 1: going in and out of reserve grade is just hanging
[58:43] Speaker 1: in there. A week's a long time. It can be
[58:45] Speaker 1: easier said than done to just hang in there. Sometimes
[58:47] Speaker 1: you think he's so far away. Toby wouldn't have thought.
[58:50] Speaker 1: He probably would have been in this position six weeks ago,
[58:53] Speaker 1: gets a call up off the bench, goes into the
[58:56] Speaker 1: side when who got who got hurt? Crichton, Crichton gets
[59:00] Speaker 1: hurt and then he's one of their best players out there.
[59:03] Speaker 1: So shout out to Toby. He could you know, you
[59:05] Speaker 1: know who knows where he's going to be through. It
[59:06] Speaker 1: could be winning a Grand Final, and.
[59:08] Speaker 2: Good on him for the class he showed during times
[59:11] Speaker 2: when a lot of most people thought he has been dubted. Yeah,
[59:13] Speaker 2: the fact that he didn't drop his card, and you
[59:15] Speaker 2: can see his teammates when he scored that try and
[59:18] Speaker 2: the Bulldog's crowd.
[59:20] Speaker 1: And it looked like Cam serroud. I saw him do
[59:21] Speaker 1: an interview before the game. He praised he said, he's
[59:24] Speaker 1: you know, he's worked so hard. He's been playing hooker
[59:26] Speaker 1: in cut as a kid. And another shout out William
[59:29] Speaker 1: Wilbrick fantasy start of this year, he got hurt in
[59:32] Speaker 1: the trials, played round one. Brick, he didn't even think
[59:36] Speaker 1: he was going to potentially come back this year, let alone.
[59:39] Speaker 1: There was a period there he didn't even know if
[59:41] Speaker 1: he'd ever come back and play rugby league. So you know,
[59:45] Speaker 1: had a had a pretty bad Yeah, it's pretty bad.
[59:47] Speaker 2: Had difficult start to the game, but finished so strong.
[59:50] Speaker 1: Second half was and I thought he was so so
[59:52] Speaker 1: physical and then he obviously had the nail in the
[59:55] Speaker 1: coffin getting the intercept and go one hundred meters.
[59:57] Speaker 2: So shout out to Willie, Well done, will mine until
[1:00:01] Speaker 2: I'm going to go on losing, so I'm going to
[1:00:04] Speaker 2: I cannot tell you how I'm impressed. I remember that
[1:00:05] Speaker 2: guy in the last since he's come back from injury.
[1:00:07] Speaker 2: He's a powerhouse. He's going he's a great player. From
[1:00:11] Speaker 2: the Big Loss, from.
[1:00:12] Speaker 1: The Roofs to I mean Terrell may too, probably the
[1:00:17] Speaker 1: best buys of the year and they both left the
[1:00:19] Speaker 1: rust undoubtedly.
[1:00:20] Speaker 2: Yeahs, I'm going to get some sleep, man, I really
[1:00:23] Speaker 2: got I've been doing too much work and too much drinking, well,
[1:00:27] Speaker 2: too much fun.
[1:00:28] Speaker 1: Are you going to compromise?
[1:00:30] Speaker 2: Uh, compromise.
[1:00:32] Speaker 1: I can't even spell it.
[1:00:34] Speaker 2: This is set in there, somewhere
