[0:03] Speaker 1: a little rigid.
[0:04] Speaker 2: You want to massage or.
[0:05] Speaker 3: Something nice and relaxed.
[0:07] Speaker 1: I know that that's sort of that thing that's almost
[0:10] Speaker 1: poking and find a little uncomfortable. Yes, well, Matthew is
[0:21] Speaker 1: quite quite an appatitle.
[0:25] Speaker 2: Can you tell can you tell the listeners Matthew as
[0:28] Speaker 2: a as a young fellow, because he's he's quite a
[0:31] Speaker 2: fussy eater now with like things like mashed potatoes and
[0:34] Speaker 2: what he peas? Has he always been like that?
[0:37] Speaker 3: Always?
[0:38] Speaker 4: Yeah?
[0:38] Speaker 3: He used to throw the peas under the table and
[0:41] Speaker 3: wipe his hands on the tablecloth and the cat.
[0:47] Speaker 2: Oh really, even.
[0:49] Speaker 3: As a baby when you used to pure the veges,
[0:52] Speaker 3: wouldn't eat them.
[0:53] Speaker 2: Wow, such a fussy child.
[0:56] Speaker 3: And I took him to the doctor because I thought
[0:57] Speaker 3: he was going to starve. And the doctor said he
[1:00] Speaker 3: if he had peanut butter sandwiches or vegemite sandwiches and
[1:03] Speaker 3: a bit of fruit di befine.
[1:05] Speaker 1: I didn't like sandwiches either.
[1:08] Speaker 2: What do you used to throw? What do you what
[1:10] Speaker 2: do you lunch?
[1:10] Speaker 1: There? It's a packet of potato crisps.
[1:14] Speaker 2: You know what's exciting about this? Experience. Right now, We've
[1:17] Speaker 2: got obviously, we've got Gary Johns or Gail Johns. We've
[1:20] Speaker 2: got Matthew Johnses Cooper John's, Jack John's in the corner.
[1:22] Speaker 2: We have in this room right now, there's three generations
[1:25] Speaker 2: of Johns's. And I think that's pretty special, don't you think, Guys?
[1:28] Speaker 4: I think so?
[1:29] Speaker 2: Yeah, are you excited part of this experience?
[1:32] Speaker 3: It's very good that we still all speak.
[1:35] Speaker 1: We have our moments. Yeah, Where's where's happy? Where's Joey?
[1:40] Speaker 3: He's flying in from Java today.
[1:43] Speaker 1: He had he's had a terrible experience.
[1:46] Speaker 4: He's the spot.
[1:52] Speaker 1: He knows who the male spot is double hands.
[1:55] Speaker 3: I think it was Land.
[1:57] Speaker 1: But he was saying about the monkeys were getting again
[2:01] Speaker 1: working is like one was doing diversion as we're going.
[2:04] Speaker 1: Just because paramoi paranoid doesn't mean they're not after you.
[2:07] Speaker 2: Has Joey always been like that as from a child
[2:10] Speaker 2: a little bit. I wouldn't say paranoid, but thinking like that,
[2:15] Speaker 2: like that's the monkey's always been after him.
[2:17] Speaker 3: No, No, when he was when he was really young,
[2:21] Speaker 3: Matt was really quiet and but we worked out Matt
[2:24] Speaker 3: had a bit of a hearing problem. He didn't hear people,
[2:29] Speaker 3: So when people have speaked, he might have to say
[2:31] Speaker 3: so like that. But Andrew was out there like he
[2:35] Speaker 3: was just so wild all the boys are playing football
[2:37] Speaker 3: that Gary coach used to call him mad dog like.
[2:40] Speaker 1: McDougal, except he's not worth a billion dollars, not after
[2:45] Speaker 1: the divorces anymore.
[2:52] Speaker 3: Yeah, so he Yeah, he was always a bit wild,
[2:56] Speaker 3: but he had not as injury prone or that's what
[3:01] Speaker 3: it is now.
[3:02] Speaker 1: Every time and we get there made Andrew was good
[3:05] Speaker 1: at everything, wasn't he pick up? Pick up a surfboard?
[3:10] Speaker 4: Yeah?
[3:10] Speaker 1: At the time you brought us our first bikes.
[3:13] Speaker 4: Oh that was hilarious. What were they? What were they
[3:18] Speaker 4: called it? But not.
[3:21] Speaker 1: Joey had a BMX and I had a dragster.
[3:24] Speaker 4: So he was Joey was probably five or six. We
[3:29] Speaker 4: went to the bike shop to pick him up. We
[3:31] Speaker 4: paid for him, and he took off down the street.
[3:35] Speaker 4: That couldn't sider, he couldn't balance it. So I run
[3:38] Speaker 4: all the way home, hanging on at the seats about
[3:40] Speaker 4: you wouldn't dry back then.
[3:44] Speaker 1: I was a catastrophe. I always get there. I always
[3:47] Speaker 1: I always thought the worst is going to happen, and
[3:49] Speaker 1: invariably it did.
[3:51] Speaker 3: Yeah, Well joe kept hitting the back of your bike
[3:54] Speaker 3: with his will to try and knock you off it
[3:56] Speaker 3: an yes, yes, And.
[3:57] Speaker 2: That's been a message. That's a pretty good message of
[4:00] Speaker 2: their relationship. How it's been. Always been quite testy these
[4:04] Speaker 2: two do They used to fight growing up a bit
[4:05] Speaker 2: as well.
[4:06] Speaker 3: Oh all the time, yeah, yeah, constantly, Especially if I
[4:09] Speaker 3: got on the phone, they'd have a punch up because
[4:12] Speaker 3: in those days you didn't have phone. She could walk
[4:13] Speaker 3: around with you how to sit and speak on them?
[4:16] Speaker 3: Oh yeah, so they go into another room and start
[4:19] Speaker 3: punching on.
[4:20] Speaker 4: So I was at the pit one night when I
[4:23] Speaker 4: got home from work guard I said, oh, we've had
[4:24] Speaker 4: a night to night. What's happened? She said, all that
[4:27] Speaker 4: wallpaper you put it in Joey and MAT's room. Joey's
[4:30] Speaker 4: pulled it off the wall And I said, did have it?
[4:34] Speaker 4: She said, Well, he was playing up. So I hid
[4:36] Speaker 4: him with a feather duster, but he stock the feather
[4:38] Speaker 4: dust off. He'd broken it all about eight pieces. Then
[4:42] Speaker 4: here's nothing. He's block and gone into the bedroom and
[4:44] Speaker 4: pulled all that wallpaper off the wall.
[4:46] Speaker 3: That was nice wallpaper.
[4:48] Speaker 1: Another time you went out, but maybe you bought that
[4:49] Speaker 1: new lounge and went and then we when they came
[4:54] Speaker 1: home and lounge had busted. We'd having a stick and
[4:57] Speaker 1: I fell on the lounge and went straight through it.
[4:59] Speaker 1: Because when they got and they said, what happens to
[5:00] Speaker 1: I'll bloody Andrew he watched it. He just got a
[5:03] Speaker 1: massive flog.
[5:06] Speaker 2: We were talking the other day, goes about you having ink?
[5:09] Speaker 4: Did you?
[5:09] Speaker 2: We have memories of you having some sort of ostrich
[5:12] Speaker 2: egg underneath your bed. Where'd you get?
[5:16] Speaker 3: What was that?
[5:17] Speaker 4: Well? I had a good mate called Peter Crawley and
[5:20] Speaker 4: he from Cuda Barramen and we went up there one
[5:22] Speaker 4: time to visit him and we'll go somewhere in the
[5:26] Speaker 4: car pas and the panic. So Pete said to me, here,
[5:29] Speaker 4: WA's this? So we get out in the car. Petkin
[5:33] Speaker 4: climbs through the fence. He lays on his back and
[5:35] Speaker 4: he starts kicking, kicking his legs like he's riding the bike.
[5:39] Speaker 4: And I said, what do you do? And he said,
[5:41] Speaker 4: are really inquisitive? They'll come over and he sure enough
[5:46] Speaker 4: those ms come up and they stood there watching he
[5:48] Speaker 4: waile he's lad on his back ride the bike. He said,
[5:54] Speaker 4: there'll be a nest around here. Somewhere, so we went
[5:56] Speaker 4: look and we found this music and he said you
[5:59] Speaker 4: want and I said, yeah, I'll take it home. So
[6:01] Speaker 4: I took it and then whatever hatch?
[6:04] Speaker 2: So why were you Were you wanting it to hatch
[6:06] Speaker 2: or were you going to eat?
[6:08] Speaker 4: I don't know what I was going to do with it? Good?
[6:10] Speaker 2: Where is it now? Well, Joey was in it.
[6:16] Speaker 3: They did warns not to break it because you'd never
[6:19] Speaker 3: get the smell out of the house. Such a bad smell,
[6:23] Speaker 3: and you've had.
[6:23] Speaker 1: Some smells in the house. Let's face it.
[6:25] Speaker 3: The dog Beefer, poor Beefer? What about it? The football
[6:30] Speaker 3: that time? Someone said, look at that dog on the
[6:32] Speaker 3: field and it was Beefer and he had worms and
[6:35] Speaker 3: someone scored a try and he was wiping his bum
[6:38] Speaker 3: on these as.
[6:40] Speaker 1: I said, Yeah, he used toggest to drag, drag his
[6:43] Speaker 1: ass like literally carry the full house. All sudden you
[6:47] Speaker 1: hear this hysterical laughter. There's a dog on the field
[6:50] Speaker 1: zipping around. Was Beefer got out, over ran over the
[6:54] Speaker 1: football ground.
[6:55] Speaker 3: And he was dragging his bottom across the Beefer was
[7:00] Speaker 3: a bastard and he got his name.
[7:02] Speaker 2: He got his name. How did before? I want to
[7:05] Speaker 2: ask you, how you got to Maddie and Joey and
[7:07] Speaker 2: Kate's names. But how did you two meet to start off?
[7:10] Speaker 2: Because I don't know if I've ever really heard the story.
[7:13] Speaker 4: Well, I was at the karate club desk run by
[7:16] Speaker 4: Gary Sullivan. Yeah, and it was a Friday night. I
[7:21] Speaker 4: was about fifteen, I think, and I was sitting there
[7:24] Speaker 4: was a haul in Curry and all the suits were
[7:26] Speaker 4: around the wall. So I was sitting there with a
[7:28] Speaker 4: good maid of mind, Jeff Roch from Curry. It walks
[7:32] Speaker 4: your grandma, little bitty skirt, little beardie brown beardie.
[7:36] Speaker 1: Legs, and what you think?
[7:37] Speaker 2: What were you thinking? Man?
[7:38] Speaker 4: I thought, Jesus Christ, where's she come from? What a
[7:41] Speaker 4: good sort?
[7:43] Speaker 3: Now my version of the story, girl I work with
[7:48] Speaker 3: come from Curry. And I said that Gary John's is
[7:51] Speaker 3: a good sort and she said he lives up the
[7:53] Speaker 3: road from it, and she said, come down to the
[7:56] Speaker 3: karate dance state at my place. So I wasn't allowed
[7:59] Speaker 3: to go to dances, right think, So told Mama Lie,
[8:01] Speaker 3: and I went down there. We went to the dance.
[8:03] Speaker 3: So she introduced me to Gary. But it was the
[8:05] Speaker 3: wrong one. There was another Gary John's lived at Western.
[8:10] Speaker 1: Was he a good sort.
[8:11] Speaker 2: Yeah he was. I wasn't was he good football?
[8:18] Speaker 5: He's a soccer player, so I must say of all
[8:23] Speaker 5: the things like that. So the karate dance, so he said, Gary,
[8:27] Speaker 5: of course he was a relative of ours. Played for
[8:29] Speaker 5: Australia Rugby League and was a strange champion karate Australian champion,
[8:35] Speaker 5: karate champion. Yeah, and he spent how many years? He
[8:39] Speaker 5: was a bank rubber too, He was a bank rubber.
[8:42] Speaker 4: He got.
[8:45] Speaker 3: I'm not sure how long.
[8:47] Speaker 4: That for the news? I think did he escaped? He
[8:51] Speaker 4: escaped from from Brisbane and they found him an Adelaide.
[8:57] Speaker 4: He's still alive, Gary, but he's battling bad health.
[9:00] Speaker 2: How did he how did he escape from jail?
[9:03] Speaker 1: I don't know.
[9:05] Speaker 4: I don't know. I don't know the story about that.
[9:08] Speaker 4: All I know is he went to Adelaide or somehow
[9:12] Speaker 4: I got to Adelaide and he went into the chemistry.
[9:16] Speaker 4: He had the money to buy any perfumes like under
[9:19] Speaker 4: arm or soaper, and so he stole them. Anyway, they
[9:23] Speaker 4: called the plate, they called the police and they got him.
[9:26] Speaker 4: When they he wouldn't tell him his name, So they
[9:30] Speaker 4: run fingerprints and that on him, and they found out
[9:32] Speaker 4: that gives it an escape prisoner. So he played.
[9:36] Speaker 1: He played for Newtown, played the Newtown Jets with his
[9:39] Speaker 1: brother Robbie, Robbie brother in law, and then that same
[9:42] Speaker 1: team with the Dawson twins and Chris Hayward. Chris Hayward,
[9:51] Speaker 1: who's Bailey's He was his grandfather. Jesus, there's a lot
[9:55] Speaker 1: of Bailey follow Gary Sullivan. Did you like because you're
[9:58] Speaker 1: a lot younger than him, did you ever see him
[10:00] Speaker 1: have a stink stoush?
[10:01] Speaker 4: Yeah? Yeah, I did many times, but one I remember
[10:05] Speaker 4: we're down the Hamburger Shop after the dance on the
[10:08] Speaker 4: Friday night. Gary had a security business. He used to
[10:11] Speaker 4: ride around this Boris Cooper s. So there was trouble
[10:13] Speaker 4: at the trouble at the pub and the Rainble boys
[10:18] Speaker 4: for Maitland were there, three of them, big blokes about
[10:20] Speaker 4: six foot five and they will causing trouble. So they
[10:24] Speaker 4: called the Cottoners and Russell Cookner's the sergeant. So he
[10:27] Speaker 4: comes over and he wanted nothing to do with it.
[10:29] Speaker 4: So he rings THESSOT police station. Because no mobiles in
[10:32] Speaker 4: them days. They said, sou iv, you can find Gary Sullivan.
[10:36] Speaker 4: He's working up there tonight to a security, so they
[10:38] Speaker 4: found him, tarl him. He's wanted him Curry. Russell Cook
[10:42] Speaker 4: knows her hands, so back he comes. We heard what
[10:45] Speaker 4: was going on. Ju's got around the town pretty quickly. Anyway,
[10:50] Speaker 4: Gary pulls up and the brad Bool boys. By this
[10:52] Speaker 4: stage we're down at the Hamburger shop and we're all
[10:55] Speaker 4: standing outside. So Gary gets out of the cooper s
[10:58] Speaker 4: and he kicks the bikes over. The boys come out
[11:02] Speaker 4: and there was a blue one Gary flat the three
[11:06] Speaker 4: of them. Russell Cook was sitting in the cop car
[11:09] Speaker 4: across the road. When it was all over, they couldn't
[11:12] Speaker 4: get up. Russell Cook gets out of his car, walks
[11:15] Speaker 4: over and right, are you kids get up?
[11:20] Speaker 2: Yeah, well I don't know how he got there. But
[11:22] Speaker 2: back back to you guys, how he's meant so you
[11:24] Speaker 2: were you've been introduced to the wrong Gary. How did
[11:27] Speaker 2: it come about where you two came face to face
[11:30] Speaker 2: and then eventually horizontal like not the details of that,
[11:36] Speaker 2: but how did you.
[11:37] Speaker 4: Basically it was horizontal.
[11:41] Speaker 1: From my memory was more.
[11:46] Speaker 3: Drunker introduced us and and then dance and it was
[11:52] Speaker 3: such a good dancer.
[11:55] Speaker 4: It was the last see the lights that was But.
[12:00] Speaker 3: Then they half we start going out together then?
[12:02] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[12:02] Speaker 2: Right, And when you say dancing back then, it's like
[12:05] Speaker 2: I'm thinking, I'm visualizing, like back to the future when
[12:07] Speaker 2: it's you're kind of slow dancing. Is that what you did?
[12:10] Speaker 4: Yeah?
[12:11] Speaker 3: Last dance? Was that?
[12:12] Speaker 2: Last year?
[12:12] Speaker 1: Was always slow dance?
[12:13] Speaker 2: And did you share a kiss?
[12:16] Speaker 3: Not then?
[12:16] Speaker 4: Not first. I'll never kissed the girl before, so I
[12:20] Speaker 4: didn't know what to do. And what was practice on
[12:23] Speaker 4: the mirror?
[12:24] Speaker 1: Did you remember the goat?
[12:29] Speaker 2: Because I used to practice on the like I put
[12:31] Speaker 2: my thumb and my index finger together and I'd make
[12:34] Speaker 2: the shape of mouth and I practice that way. How
[12:36] Speaker 2: did you do you have memories of the first kiss?
[12:38] Speaker 2: What was he like as a kisser?
[12:39] Speaker 1: Girl?
[12:40] Speaker 3: No idea, I can't remember.
[12:42] Speaker 4: I couldn't stop your giggler.
[12:45] Speaker 3: I used to laugh and I got nervous.
[12:48] Speaker 1: Yeah, so and this is this is now? This is interesting.
[12:52] Speaker 4: How old is that?
[12:53] Speaker 3: It was? That fourteen for fifteen.
[12:56] Speaker 1: Jesus and you've gone the distance?
[12:58] Speaker 4: Yeah, very fifty four years and fifty five years in February. Yeah,
[13:03] Speaker 4: and what was what were you guys when you had
[13:05] Speaker 4: me twenty twenty nine married?
[13:09] Speaker 3: Yeah?
[13:10] Speaker 4: Right, Well back here, I was still the preduce bordermaker
[13:13] Speaker 4: when we got married, and when you were born, I
[13:15] Speaker 4: was and I was stress ballermaker. Actually, so we had
[13:20] Speaker 4: no money at all. I had no bank account, I
[13:23] Speaker 4: had nothing.
[13:24] Speaker 2: Back in those days. It's very traditional, right, you got
[13:26] Speaker 2: to get married young, did you like and back then
[13:29] Speaker 2: do you have to save that you don't have intercourse
[13:32] Speaker 2: to your marriage?
[13:34] Speaker 1: That was well, we did have to get married, so
[13:38] Speaker 1: put it this way. I was at the wedding.
[13:40] Speaker 2: Oh, you were there within the did you lie? Okay? Like,
[13:45] Speaker 2: do you have to lie back then?
[13:46] Speaker 1: Did you lie?
[13:47] Speaker 2: I suppose to parents and stuff that you were pregnant.
[13:52] Speaker 3: Now mum, I think my mum guessed and yeah, so
[13:56] Speaker 3: then we just had to get married. It was now.
[14:00] Speaker 3: Someone said, how to Gary proposed? And I said, I
[14:02] Speaker 3: said to him, I'm pregnant. He went, Jesus really.
[14:06] Speaker 2: And how curly? After that? Do you get married?
[14:08] Speaker 3: Like?
[14:08] Speaker 2: Is it a couple of weeks because you don't want
[14:10] Speaker 2: to be showing up a month month?
[14:13] Speaker 3: We got married six to February, and Matt was born
[14:16] Speaker 3: twenty seventh of July.
[14:18] Speaker 2: Holy Smokes.
[14:19] Speaker 4: So girl and the girl's father lived in Coinsland, and
[14:23] Speaker 4: girl lived with a mom and a grandma, and she
[14:26] Speaker 4: had the ring her dad to tell him she was pregnant,
[14:28] Speaker 4: and she said, how the fuck did that happen?
[14:31] Speaker 2: You went, well, let me let me start them against
[14:34] Speaker 2: on that.
[14:34] Speaker 1: You know, Cooper asked me the other day. He was like,
[14:37] Speaker 1: you know, like our sense of humor our warped sense
[14:40] Speaker 1: of humor. He said, like, where does that come from?
[14:42] Speaker 1: And I thought, I thought, mate, it's Bobby Can. Yeah,
[14:46] Speaker 1: like you know Can Tricia's girl's father made.
[14:51] Speaker 3: He was funny, funny really what was he?
[14:56] Speaker 2: A charismatic millionaire?
[15:00] Speaker 3: He was impressed with himself, like last time we went.
[15:03] Speaker 3: So the boys played the Gold Coast and we went
[15:07] Speaker 3: and stayed with dad and after the game it was
[15:10] Speaker 3: the worst none in my life. I was sitting with him.
[15:12] Speaker 3: Every woman that went past a look at her. Oh
[15:15] Speaker 3: my god, she's not a bad sort, and I was singing,
[15:17] Speaker 3: oh god, it's terrible. In the end, it was hitting
[15:20] Speaker 3: on women. So I'm sitting on my own and Gary
[15:25] Speaker 3: come in and said, why are you sitting here on
[15:26] Speaker 3: your own? I said, because I can't sit with him
[15:28] Speaker 3: any longer. It's just embarrassing.
[15:29] Speaker 1: It's cheering for the Gold Coast.
[15:31] Speaker 3: Yeah, And him and I had a fight and he
[15:32] Speaker 3: kept saying it's not over till the fat lady sings.
[15:35] Speaker 3: But I think she's warming up now.
[15:38] Speaker 1: Remember you said, I remember being a very young kid,
[15:41] Speaker 1: and he would like, this is like because June Mom's mom,
[15:48] Speaker 1: my grandmother, of course, Gail's mom. She was an angel.
[15:53] Speaker 1: You got no idea like she was an angel. And
[15:55] Speaker 1: so what Poppy Can used to do once or twice
[15:58] Speaker 1: a year, him and his new wife used to hop
[16:00] Speaker 1: in his sports car, drive all the way down to
[16:03] Speaker 1: Cessnat and just live live there for about two or
[16:05] Speaker 1: three weeks.
[16:06] Speaker 2: Well, just live at the well.
[16:07] Speaker 3: My mum never owned a house, so she lived with
[16:10] Speaker 3: her mother in law, which is unusual, and said Dad
[16:14] Speaker 3: had come down to see his mom and mama be
[16:16] Speaker 3: there and he'd bring his girlfriend. Well, Grandma could not
[16:19] Speaker 3: stand the girlfriend. Yes, because she gave us some sheets
[16:22] Speaker 3: once as a present and said, oh when you died,
[16:25] Speaker 3: like these back because I paid a lot of money
[16:26] Speaker 3: for them. And Grandma said, well, don't wait till I die.
[16:29] Speaker 3: Take them with you now.
[16:31] Speaker 1: There it was the car used to drive us, Yeah,
[16:35] Speaker 1: RX seven or so.
[16:36] Speaker 3: Yeah, that red white big stripes.
[16:40] Speaker 1: Used to get up and remember I went with him.
[16:43] Speaker 1: We're up at the Gold Coast at Broad Boots, where
[16:45] Speaker 1: he lived near Draculas. Yes, come on, let's go, let's
[16:47] Speaker 1: go the pub. So we go the pub next minute,
[16:49] Speaker 1: we'll make the bands on playing there, and he just
[16:51] Speaker 1: goes stop shop. Yep, yep, come on, write our boys,
[16:54] Speaker 1: you know, Mack the knife out. Let's go and one two,
[16:58] Speaker 1: and just got up and do about two.
[17:01] Speaker 3: They have to really shoot him.
[17:04] Speaker 2: Well, that's very much like you. You love you love getting
[17:06] Speaker 2: up on the karaoke mine gas. You much of a
[17:09] Speaker 2: karaoke man, Gail. You loved singing dancing down. Yeah, I
[17:15] Speaker 2: remember I.
[17:16] Speaker 3: Got four songs, so I can do that. I'm a believer.
[17:20] Speaker 3: Twist and shout. She was just seventeen and.
[17:27] Speaker 2: She was only said she was only.
[17:29] Speaker 1: She was just seventy, which is I saw her standing there.
[17:33] Speaker 4: Tell him the story about the rocks what not.
[17:36] Speaker 3: We went to the races and were at the rocks.
[17:39] Speaker 3: So when we went back to the Fortunes of Wars,
[17:43] Speaker 3: they had this band playing all Beatles songs. So I
[17:46] Speaker 3: got up with them. So the band, I didn't know
[17:49] Speaker 3: if I was like a guest artist. Security didn't know
[17:52] Speaker 3: who in the hell I was, So I just I
[17:55] Speaker 3: sung about four songs. I kept saying, Oh, do you
[17:57] Speaker 3: know this yet?
[17:58] Speaker 4: Yep.
[18:01] Speaker 3: So then when we come and sat down, when I
[18:03] Speaker 3: sat down and go went, I think we're in a
[18:05] Speaker 3: bit of trouble. This bloke over he's staring at me
[18:07] Speaker 3: all the time any how, Oh not, I just don't
[18:11] Speaker 3: look at him. He said, no, just keep staring. So
[18:13] Speaker 3: the next thing he come around, anyhow, he had the
[18:16] Speaker 3: worst stammer I've ever heard. So he's trying, he's saying,
[18:20] Speaker 3: I know you, but he took him ten minutes to
[18:22] Speaker 3: say it. And then I said, well, if we tell
[18:24] Speaker 3: you who we are, will you leave us alone? And
[18:26] Speaker 3: he said yeah. So I said, oh, you know Matt
[18:29] Speaker 3: and Andrew John's where their parents let me buy your
[18:32] Speaker 3: drink and how it's about thirty bucks for a shout.
[18:36] Speaker 3: I said, okay. So then the far maid said, I've
[18:39] Speaker 3: told you no more drink for you get out, and
[18:42] Speaker 3: I said, oh, can you just buy us a drink
[18:44] Speaker 3: before he goes No, he's going straight out. So he
[18:46] Speaker 3: stood at the doorwave until us the rest of the night.
[18:49] Speaker 4: Oh god, geez, I tell you it was there that night.
[18:51] Speaker 4: Was Kerry Hemsley, Oh buckets, Yeah, Kerry Hemsley an old
[18:55] Speaker 4: front role for the used to be a biking as well.
[18:59] Speaker 4: One of the right fellers.
[19:02] Speaker 3: Well they used to come up to Marcaus Sylvesters.
[19:05] Speaker 1: Yeah, that's right he was.
[19:06] Speaker 3: Now.
[19:06] Speaker 1: Next question, when we first got a caravan, what why
[19:12] Speaker 1: did we go to Middle Rock Caravan Park of course,
[19:17] Speaker 1: which was a nudist beach. What was the thinking there?
[19:20] Speaker 4: We couldn't get anywhere.
[19:22] Speaker 3: Else, any place we could get on.
[19:24] Speaker 4: The council that only released so many every year, so
[19:28] Speaker 4: many parks because they've got this rule that they've got
[19:31] Speaker 4: to have provisions for boogle to travel yep. So so
[19:36] Speaker 4: that's that bottle have been tempted to so out of
[19:38] Speaker 4: the capacity of the park so we could get on
[19:41] Speaker 4: at finger which where we wanted to go. So we
[19:43] Speaker 4: had two years one ball.
[19:45] Speaker 2: So do you have to with caravan do you have
[19:47] Speaker 2: to like buy a spot for two years?
[19:50] Speaker 4: You play weekly, rent.
[19:51] Speaker 2: Your rented everywhere? So that one because you eventually went
[19:54] Speaker 2: to Finger Bay Caravan Park. But the Middle Roight one,
[19:58] Speaker 2: what was that complete nudist beach?
[20:00] Speaker 4: It was a nudist boach.
[20:01] Speaker 2: And did you do you guys buy into that culture?
[20:04] Speaker 3: No?
[20:06] Speaker 4: I remember Blake Service in his car one day that
[20:08] Speaker 4: he had the closed on you loading over the mudguard
[20:10] Speaker 4: that all you could see was us.
[20:14] Speaker 1: But I remember the first a gaz puts the cart,
[20:18] Speaker 1: he's put the caravan. We've part of the caravan, got
[20:20] Speaker 1: the n X up right. At this point, I, me
[20:23] Speaker 1: and Joey had no idea that was a nodistpech. He goes, right, boys,
[20:26] Speaker 1: what direct is going to have a swim? Well, it
[20:28] Speaker 1: was about five hundred meters over the scene dunes to
[20:31] Speaker 1: get there, and we finally get over the last sandurn.
[20:33] Speaker 1: I look over and I'm going, fucking hell, it's like
[20:37] Speaker 1: National Geographic. It's just tits and us and different balls everything.
[20:41] Speaker 3: Are you?
[20:42] Speaker 2: How are you there?
[20:43] Speaker 1: About nine nine? I remember like the SCROTUMSLA had fucking
[20:48] Speaker 1: balls under their knees.
[20:50] Speaker 3: Andrew has been scarred because there was a blake worming
[20:54] Speaker 3: and he was and he had the belt on round
[20:56] Speaker 3: that's all he had on.
[20:57] Speaker 1: Yeah, because you're think of a nudist peach, you think
[20:59] Speaker 1: of like, you know, young super bottles and get So.
[21:02] Speaker 4: What about when we was verst the caravan, we put
[21:05] Speaker 4: it in the yard. I put the adexe up, working
[21:08] Speaker 4: out what furniture we wanted in the beds for the
[21:09] Speaker 4: boys and all that sort of stuff. Where we're going
[21:11] Speaker 4: to put the skin. We ha no fridges and us.
[21:15] Speaker 4: So this particular day, I said, where's the boys? I said,
[21:18] Speaker 4: I don't know. She said, go and get them. Lunch
[21:22] Speaker 4: is ready. So I went out the yard to give
[21:24] Speaker 4: a whistle. No one there. Where the hell are they? Back?
[21:27] Speaker 4: Cat shut? I went down like an ear report in
[21:31] Speaker 4: the cariban. When I walked in, there sitting at the
[21:33] Speaker 4: table with a twist top or stubby and beer roote,
[21:37] Speaker 4: I said, what the hell you like? And I said,
[21:39] Speaker 4: we're practicing god on, hold hold us? How old nine
[21:45] Speaker 4: the seven?
[21:48] Speaker 2: Isn't there a story? Isn't there a story? Because you
[21:50] Speaker 2: gotta hate the caravan story stories. Isn't there a yarn
[21:54] Speaker 2: where one of the caravan neighbors had a kayak or something?
[22:00] Speaker 4: Yeah, a cano.
[22:01] Speaker 1: I must have told that on Triple M. I reckon
[22:04] Speaker 1: three or four times every year on our show with
[22:07] Speaker 1: the audience, and that breaks on ofud. Hey, Maddie tell
[22:10] Speaker 1: us the the kayak story.
[22:12] Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, So this blake was an old bricket. He
[22:15] Speaker 4: was he was he ruine our barstard. All the kids
[22:18] Speaker 4: who be playing cricket they'd hit the tennis ball up
[22:21] Speaker 4: against his caravan and he come out and take the
[22:23] Speaker 4: ball off them. Or they'd be playing football and the
[22:25] Speaker 4: ball would roll up and he and he take the
[22:27] Speaker 4: ball off them. Anywhy that? And he blues with him.
[22:29] Speaker 4: So Matthew wanted to go the toilet, so he went out.
[22:33] Speaker 4: He did each canoe the next morning about sisters because
[22:39] Speaker 4: of us, all I'll do blasco and fishing. He come
[22:41] Speaker 4: out and all sorts of carry on. The dirty bastards.
[22:45] Speaker 4: He seen it. You in there, Get out of here?
[22:48] Speaker 4: What is what's going on? He said? One of your
[22:50] Speaker 4: kids shdoy?
[22:53] Speaker 1: And how did I say that?
[22:54] Speaker 4: Come of that? Mate? I said, they wouldn't do that.
[22:56] Speaker 3: Kids wouldn't do that.
[22:57] Speaker 2: How did he know it was human excrement?
[23:00] Speaker 4: I don't know.
[23:03] Speaker 1: For under the get up in the middle of the
[23:06] Speaker 1: night going up to the toilet, which is one hundred meters,
[23:08] Speaker 1: so I just do a ship under it.
[23:09] Speaker 4: I remember.
[23:10] Speaker 2: I remember the old you had to because it was
[23:12] Speaker 2: one of those caravan parks. You had to whack the
[23:14] Speaker 2: thongs on. You get a towel and you go and
[23:15] Speaker 2: have the shower and the toilet's up at the actual block.
[23:17] Speaker 2: All together because I remember when when Jack and I
[23:20] Speaker 2: were young and we'd always go up to Finger Bay
[23:22] Speaker 2: caravan Park. You know, we'd be having shower. It was
[23:25] Speaker 2: like my first exposed to a locker room because there'd
[23:28] Speaker 2: just be a bunch of old blokes in there and
[23:30] Speaker 2: you're just shower next to them in your thong to
[23:32] Speaker 2: save yourself from tinier.
[23:33] Speaker 1: Yep, that's right.
[23:34] Speaker 4: So what about what about the year we look at
[23:36] Speaker 4: after the boys Matt and Joe and the girls went
[23:39] Speaker 4: the boxing day races at Newcastle. We had all the
[23:42] Speaker 4: boys there, so Samuel was the only little fella.
[23:45] Speaker 2: Yeah, Joey son, your age.
[23:48] Speaker 4: And is We're playing up at the laundry block. Girls
[23:52] Speaker 4: up there doing some washing and they run in one
[23:55] Speaker 4: door and out there they're running around. All the kids
[23:57] Speaker 4: were there playing and Samuel goes missing. We couldn't find
[24:01] Speaker 4: him anyway. He'd gone about an hour. So I was
[24:04] Speaker 4: absolutely but was off our heads. We didn't couldn't find him,
[24:08] Speaker 4: didn't know what was going on over there. Put an
[24:11] Speaker 4: announcement over the bike at the caravan park. But little
[24:15] Speaker 4: boys being lost, you know. So anyway, a cousin of
[24:19] Speaker 4: mine founder found him and he got into an annex
[24:22] Speaker 4: followed one of the kids and going into an anix.
[24:25] Speaker 4: So we went up. They told us where it was,
[24:27] Speaker 4: so we went up and got him. You come with me,
[24:31] Speaker 4: and as we're coming down the road, you're walking behind him,
[24:34] Speaker 4: pushing him in the back saying you ain't getting the
[24:37] Speaker 4: fucking lunch nawny boy. Yeah, the age as him that
[24:44] Speaker 4: it was Boxing day, so everyone in the street was
[24:46] Speaker 4: out at the barbecue having a beer inside the addix,
[24:50] Speaker 4: and you swear poor old Samuel pushing him out in
[24:54] Speaker 4: the back of the head and say, you're a fucking
[24:56] Speaker 4: anawning boy.
[24:59] Speaker 2: Something's ever change?
[25:01] Speaker 1: He used to be, used to be some characters.
[25:03] Speaker 4: Yeah, what about the day joe he got out of
[25:06] Speaker 4: bed the ship under the tree that.
[25:08] Speaker 2: Was matt again.
[25:10] Speaker 4: Yeah, the tree kicked a bit of sand over poor
[25:14] Speaker 4: old Shane Furnes across the road. Next day he's climbed
[25:17] Speaker 4: up the tree. When he jumped out, he jumps straight
[25:18] Speaker 4: into the ships, got it all through his toes and.
[25:24] Speaker 2: Oh my, when you look back on uh, you know
[25:28] Speaker 2: you had obviously Kate as well. But I imagine Matthew
[25:30] Speaker 2: and Joey would have been the two hardest work or
[25:33] Speaker 2: naughtiest who would have been the hardest to race out
[25:35] Speaker 2: of those two. Joe Joey was Oh.
[25:38] Speaker 3: He was very big headed, Yeah, and he like it.
[25:42] Speaker 3: Couldn't handle discipline if anyone tried to discipline, and he
[25:46] Speaker 3: hated them and teachers, coaches, football coaches anyway.
[25:50] Speaker 4: But he wasn't frightened of anything. He dow anything, wouldn't
[25:53] Speaker 4: he Yeah, would do anything. It was about a ten
[25:56] Speaker 4: foot surfety one day and all the other guys are
[25:59] Speaker 4: out in the world having the time of the life.
[26:01] Speaker 4: I had Kate and i'd take him for a walk.
[26:04] Speaker 4: I walked up the headly and have a look, and
[26:06] Speaker 4: he's Joel. He was about eight, nine year old. He
[26:09] Speaker 4: wouldn't have been that on that green board.
[26:11] Speaker 3: He wouldn't have been what even younger, about seven.
[26:14] Speaker 4: He's out the surf. So this old guy was there,
[26:17] Speaker 4: and I knew he must excuse me. Would you take
[26:20] Speaker 4: Cake back to the caravan garlice? So I'm going to
[26:22] Speaker 4: go out My young black's out in the water, go
[26:24] Speaker 4: and get him. So I swam all the way out
[26:25] Speaker 4: here's through the waves, got out of their exhausted and
[26:29] Speaker 4: he said, Dave, what are you doing out here? I said,
[26:33] Speaker 4: you know, on the beach. What are you doing out here?
[26:37] Speaker 2: So what was was matthew a lot easier then in
[26:40] Speaker 2: that sense, like to raise.
[26:43] Speaker 4: He's a sleep all day. So we had no trouble.
[26:45] Speaker 2: Really, we were a big sleeper back then.
[26:47] Speaker 3: Well, Matt loved the cricket too, and that was on
[26:49] Speaker 3: in the holidays and he didn't like the surf because
[26:52] Speaker 3: he used to get chafed. So he go down and
[26:55] Speaker 3: he didn't want to get too dark, so he go
[26:57] Speaker 3: down the beach, have a swim, go back up, watch cricket.
[27:00] Speaker 4: Yeah, we have thirty eight years we had there at
[27:02] Speaker 4: the park.
[27:03] Speaker 2: And who when we talk about, you know, being scale
[27:07] Speaker 2: young scully wags when they get into their teens, who
[27:10] Speaker 2: was who was getting into more trouble than in the
[27:12] Speaker 2: teenager years, Like in terms of going out and drinking.
[27:16] Speaker 3: Now, the boys didn't really get into trouble or go
[27:19] Speaker 3: out drinking at that stage because they were both trying
[27:21] Speaker 3: out for football, so they used to train on a Sunday,
[27:26] Speaker 3: so training through the work hardly ever went out.
[27:29] Speaker 4: What about the night you got running by the coppers
[27:33] Speaker 4: coming after the working club, Yeah, the park with a baton, Yeah, yeah, yes,
[27:39] Speaker 4: he was having a piss in this all? Mill?
[27:41] Speaker 2: Yeah, you were having in public?
[27:44] Speaker 1: Yeah, I went and I went to get back into
[27:46] Speaker 1: the pub to do a piss and they said no, no,
[27:50] Speaker 1: but we've locked up. Mate, So I'm walking. I've gone
[27:52] Speaker 1: up and around hot next couple up, what are you doing?
[27:57] Speaker 1: So I'm just in away and I couldn't get the
[27:58] Speaker 1: pub to a piss anyway. Hit bellow me with a
[28:01] Speaker 1: baton and then took me the police station fingerprint of
[28:04] Speaker 1: me and went court.
[28:07] Speaker 2: What was that was that?
[28:08] Speaker 1: Why?
[28:09] Speaker 2: Surely incessant? There's enough flads urinating in public.
[28:11] Speaker 3: That's something decent exposure?
[28:14] Speaker 4: It was? It was this couple was no good. I
[28:16] Speaker 4: knew where he drags. One afternoon, I knew it was
[28:19] Speaker 4: a work and I went around under chatty. Yeah totally.
[28:22] Speaker 4: What I thought of him?
[28:23] Speaker 2: And what and what what did you think of him?
[28:26] Speaker 4: I just told him as a grub and I'll do it.
[28:30] Speaker 1: But you know, things were used to do. Like I
[28:32] Speaker 1: look back now, something I like At the time, I
[28:35] Speaker 1: thought it was a little weird, but I looked back
[28:38] Speaker 1: it out and I think, fucking you guys must have
[28:41] Speaker 1: been Jesus. Like I used to get your where your bikini?
[28:45] Speaker 1: I put come out and I put gals two piece
[28:48] Speaker 1: bikini on and I stand out in front of the
[28:51] Speaker 1: house and mister Whippi come past. I'd weighed mister Wibi
[28:54] Speaker 1: down and like he'd be just looking at me, and
[28:56] Speaker 1: I had the title bikinis will be driving past front
[29:01] Speaker 1: of the house and I'll be just out the front
[29:03] Speaker 1: and dressed.
[29:05] Speaker 3: And I thought it was hysterical. I still laugh him,
[29:09] Speaker 3: encouraged him.
[29:11] Speaker 2: I imagine that they would have stretched a lot of
[29:13] Speaker 2: your clothes back in the day then as well do
[29:15] Speaker 2: they do they bring a lot of their mates around
[29:17] Speaker 2: to the house.
[29:18] Speaker 4: Yeah, there was house was full. Yeah who was I
[29:22] Speaker 4: was coaching at the time up there when the waters
[29:24] Speaker 4: were growing up and there was all the footballers at
[29:26] Speaker 4: the house after the game. Yeah, drinking Johnson sleep the.
[29:32] Speaker 2: Night because when you was it you when you were
[29:35] Speaker 2: coaching gays and I believe you're your under twenties team
[29:39] Speaker 2: or your a grade that's not going to see they
[29:42] Speaker 2: stole you and took you to mad Monday and the
[29:44] Speaker 2: Gold Coast Is that right?
[29:45] Speaker 4: They abducted you, not the Gold Coast, Cassildill Bay. Yeah,
[29:50] Speaker 4: I was walking over the papers and the milk. The
[29:52] Speaker 4: bus pulls up and they said get in. I said,
[29:56] Speaker 4: where's yelled? They said, we're going for a drink, so
[29:58] Speaker 4: I said, oh, well, why not?
[30:00] Speaker 2: And then they took care all the way to there,
[30:02] Speaker 2: all right, Garl.
[30:02] Speaker 4: About seven o'clock that night, I said, oh, by your loves,
[30:05] Speaker 4: where the hell are you?
[30:05] Speaker 3: Or?
[30:05] Speaker 4: I said, cafil Bay at the pub?
[30:10] Speaker 2: Did he disappear much gal?
[30:11] Speaker 4: Yep?
[30:13] Speaker 3: Another night? Another time it was pay day when they
[30:17] Speaker 3: used to go and or get their pay from the year,
[30:20] Speaker 3: and guy said, I promise, I'm undergoing. I have to
[30:23] Speaker 3: get the money. I'll be back. Okay, we might take
[30:26] Speaker 3: the kids for a picnic or something. Okay, anyhow, never
[30:29] Speaker 3: come home. And then the next thing I got a
[30:31] Speaker 3: phone call from the hospital and they said, has fallen
[30:34] Speaker 3: out of the car and he's up at the hospital.
[30:38] Speaker 3: We're getting all this metal out of his bottom. And
[30:41] Speaker 3: I said, yeah, we'll just keep him up there.
[30:43] Speaker 2: How did you fall out of a car?
[30:44] Speaker 3: What does it?
[30:45] Speaker 4: Don't remember what happened, but all I remember someone said
[30:49] Speaker 4: to Norm Venderson who under There was Norm driving Kenny
[30:53] Speaker 4: Morris in the middle and I'm on the outside. It
[30:55] Speaker 4: was a single So to you, we're going down Aberdey
[30:58] Speaker 4: Road with bird drinking. She's like o'clock in the morning.
[31:00] Speaker 4: It was about nine o'clock at night and they spent
[31:05] Speaker 4: the door flew out and I thought grabb bushby, but
[31:08] Speaker 4: I fell out. My asked to hit the road and
[31:10] Speaker 4: they reckon. I read that old see Nobby's booch. So
[31:17] Speaker 4: the next day normal, Normal was working for Lifeguard Tires
[31:20] Speaker 4: and apparently this blake would be driving behind us and
[31:23] Speaker 4: he said, he Normal, something fell out at the back
[31:25] Speaker 4: of your youth last night. He said, no, that was John. Yeah,
[31:30] Speaker 4: I was a mess. You got no idea. I had
[31:32] Speaker 4: no skin on my head. It's tore me trousers off,
[31:36] Speaker 4: just shredded. The skin was off her eyes.
[31:38] Speaker 2: Just stop you drinking for a while.
[31:40] Speaker 4: Not till about Wednesday, I think games again.
[31:44] Speaker 1: Dad get on the sauce. And Mom would say, now listen,
[31:48] Speaker 1: when he comes home, I'm going to lock the house. Mate.
[31:52] Speaker 1: You don't let him in the house. Right, he's going
[31:54] Speaker 1: to bang on the door. He's going to he'll try everything. Right,
[31:57] Speaker 1: next minute we're here, poomp boom.
[31:58] Speaker 6: Boom, kayle don't do Gail, Matthew, I'm going don't Matthew.
[32:15] Speaker 1: We went on anyway, I did just sleeping at the front.
[32:21] Speaker 2: Mind you do that to learn his lesson?
[32:23] Speaker 3: Yeah, because you've been drunk and stupid, and with the
[32:27] Speaker 3: bed your.
[32:29] Speaker 2: Bed weather as well.
[32:30] Speaker 4: Were you up a couple of times?
[32:32] Speaker 1: Is that?
[32:33] Speaker 2: Is that stop now as well?
[32:34] Speaker 4: One day at the caravan park, we're playing cards. It
[32:38] Speaker 4: was a wet day, so all the blakes got together.
[32:41] Speaker 4: We're playing cards, and I think I drank forward in
[32:43] Speaker 4: large bottles, but I was pretty pissed. I went to
[32:47] Speaker 4: sleep on the bed. Used to.
[32:52] Speaker 3: You.
[32:53] Speaker 4: Yeah, anyway, I woke up and I went, oh my god,
[32:56] Speaker 4: I was floating. But I didn't do it once or
[32:59] Speaker 4: twice in one night. The next day dragged pulled all
[33:06] Speaker 4: the shirts off of water with all the dinner, dragged
[33:09] Speaker 4: the mattress. What do you doing that first? She said,
[33:11] Speaker 4: I'm putting it out the drawing, will never sleep with it.
[33:14] Speaker 4: So everyone was coming past as kids went to bed guard.
[33:17] Speaker 4: Now Gary did.
[33:20] Speaker 1: With with mining up there, coops and Jack. There was
[33:24] Speaker 1: just an enormous drinking culture. And you know we went
[33:28] Speaker 1: sort of through the family by Hervey, uncle uncle Hervey, hurting.
[33:33] Speaker 4: The peers and herby Pearce and waded legs.
[33:35] Speaker 1: You know.
[33:37] Speaker 4: One one one day they used to drink. They used
[33:39] Speaker 4: to go to Foster. All the miners and says stock
[33:42] Speaker 4: Curry ever mine Western. They'd all going to Foster holidays.
[33:46] Speaker 4: So the culture was two o'clock they'd head down the pub.
[33:49] Speaker 4: They'd all come home forty seven. So they had five
[33:52] Speaker 4: hours of solid drinking. I'm talking about drinking six half
[33:55] Speaker 4: of doz of skewters an hour, you know, which is a.
[33:59] Speaker 1: One day.
[33:59] Speaker 2: Herb be drunk fifty four schooners went.
[34:02] Speaker 4: He went down there at two o'clock, and there was
[34:04] Speaker 4: a dance on that night, so I forgured his wife's name. Anyway,
[34:11] Speaker 4: said all the other boys left about five because they
[34:15] Speaker 4: were come back to dance. And Herbie said, now I'll say,
[34:18] Speaker 4: just at such and such as wife, get dressed and
[34:20] Speaker 4: come down, we'll go to the dance. So behind the bar,
[34:24] Speaker 4: the barman every day used to mark every schooner Herbie had.
[34:28] Speaker 4: He had fifty four for the day.
[34:30] Speaker 2: And then went to the dance, to the dance. And
[34:32] Speaker 2: now did he danced imas you would have been hard
[34:34] Speaker 2: to hold up.
[34:35] Speaker 3: Probably didn't dance you get hold his rock.
[34:38] Speaker 4: Honestly, you wouldn't have to think.
[34:39] Speaker 2: Out the drink, because isn't there a story of how
[34:43] Speaker 2: he drank the like a couple of blokes in it.
[34:45] Speaker 2: Because he was renowned for how many schooners you could
[34:47] Speaker 2: drink up and that way.
[34:48] Speaker 4: The bloke put a challenge up to him. He was
[34:50] Speaker 4: a timber cutter from a career and he heard about
[34:55] Speaker 4: Herbie's reputation as a drinker. So he come up there
[34:58] Speaker 4: to Foster waited for her. If you come in, and
[35:00] Speaker 4: he said, I've got a challenge for you. Might I
[35:02] Speaker 4: heard you can drink, you know? He said, I bet
[35:04] Speaker 4: you can't drink ten schooners in an hour. Herbie said, well,
[35:08] Speaker 4: I'm not going to try an aw because I'll go
[35:10] Speaker 4: in here all day. He said, but I'll I'll come
[35:12] Speaker 4: back tomorrow. You be tomorrow will try it. So the
[35:15] Speaker 4: boys used to go out too, So Herbie left the
[35:18] Speaker 4: ten utmast olve and hiss cover past there. He said that, man,
[35:23] Speaker 4: I'm going a bit early today, he says, so, oh jeez,
[35:25] Speaker 4: I'm not going early, he said. Now I've got a
[35:28] Speaker 4: couple of things to do. So setting out the hour
[35:30] Speaker 4: sil he went to the pub.
[35:33] Speaker 1: So he drank.
[35:34] Speaker 4: He drank the ten schooners of an hour, just to
[35:36] Speaker 4: test himself. And he went up and he said, right,
[35:39] Speaker 4: I said the blake right, I'll take the.
[35:40] Speaker 2: Challenge, and then it knocked it out.
[35:43] Speaker 4: The next hour he done another ten.
[35:46] Speaker 1: So he went to the pub first, all just to
[35:47] Speaker 1: see if you can do it.
[35:50] Speaker 2: Yeah, what an unbelievable What's what's the most? Because girl
[35:53] Speaker 2: used to poor schooners at the pub as well. Right,
[35:55] Speaker 2: did you ever have to pall schooners four guys?
[35:58] Speaker 4: Yeah?
[35:58] Speaker 2: He come in and were you giving him free schooners?
[36:00] Speaker 3: No?
[36:01] Speaker 2: No, you're always challenging him. What's the most amount of
[36:03] Speaker 2: schooners you reckon? You ever had at a pub?
[36:08] Speaker 4: When I turned twenty one, I had twenty one schooners?
[36:11] Speaker 4: Oh well, I hardly ever used to drink that. I
[36:13] Speaker 4: was a mess. I was a mess when you drink
[36:17] Speaker 4: that that particular day.
[36:18] Speaker 3: Yeah, and he actually borrowed someone's motibike, new motibike and
[36:23] Speaker 3: fell off it fell onto a car.
[36:27] Speaker 2: Because you were renowned as well. I remember all the
[36:29] Speaker 2: stories that Dad would tell us growing up, and you
[36:31] Speaker 2: would tell us from time to time about you were.
[36:35] Speaker 2: You were a local enforcer around town up in c I.
[36:38] Speaker 4: Don't know about that. A couple of times there was
[36:41] Speaker 4: a lot of a lot of blokes that wouldn't show
[36:43] Speaker 4: to respect to the older people.
[36:44] Speaker 2: I remember when we when we had lunch up there
[36:47] Speaker 2: with Bog, one of my friends. When we went up
[36:49] Speaker 2: with the Hunt of Valley with your mate Sternie, it
[36:51] Speaker 2: looked after us up the Hunt of Valley with the
[36:52] Speaker 2: bus charter. You were telling him a story about how
[36:55] Speaker 2: your old trick was if somebody was disrespectful, you'd go
[36:58] Speaker 2: and wait in the toilets, and not in like a
[37:00] Speaker 2: romantic way. You'd go in there and then when they come,
[37:03] Speaker 2: that's where you give him a bit of a bit
[37:05] Speaker 2: of a stern talking to that right.
[37:07] Speaker 4: Well, it happened once at Pruden's. I had a good
[37:10] Speaker 4: arm mate, Tidler Milligan, and I used to work in
[37:12] Speaker 4: the mines for him. He always wore a pork boy
[37:15] Speaker 4: hat felt poor. They aws dressed them backly, never ever
[37:18] Speaker 4: got married and lived on his own. Anyway, this bloke
[37:22] Speaker 4: kept knocking his hand off, this young bloke, pick it up,
[37:26] Speaker 4: give him back to Tidler, and I said, mate, cut
[37:28] Speaker 4: it out, leave him blame. And he kept doing it
[37:31] Speaker 4: so so so I'll fix you. So I went out
[37:34] Speaker 4: the toilet. I knew he'd have to have blurk shortly.
[37:37] Speaker 4: So I just went and sat on the pen and
[37:38] Speaker 4: left the door open a little bit wait for him
[37:40] Speaker 4: to come in. And then he comes.
[37:43] Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, when said because the bloke. The bloke ended
[37:48] Speaker 1: up telling some of my mates, mate, this is what happened,
[37:52] Speaker 1: you know, and he said when I walked into toilet,
[37:54] Speaker 1: he said, Gary just came out of toilet and goes.
[37:57] Speaker 2: Surprise because remember remember when we were we us. He
[38:04] Speaker 2: went to the the Aussie not long ago, the pub
[38:06] Speaker 2: up there, one of the pubs, and there was a
[38:08] Speaker 2: bloke who came over and said, good ay, and I
[38:11] Speaker 2: you introduced me to him and he said, oh that
[38:13] Speaker 2: used to be that used to be Matt's under under
[38:15] Speaker 2: tens coach.
[38:16] Speaker 3: Oh Matt Barber.
[38:17] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[38:19] Speaker 2: And then there was apparently there was a bit of
[38:21] Speaker 2: a time when he gave Mattias spray and under tens
[38:23] Speaker 2: and you give him a little bit of a job.
[38:25] Speaker 1: Yea, he told he said the Gazz, your son's a
[38:27] Speaker 1: big head, so Gaz. The next morning, I remember getting
[38:31] Speaker 1: to the game and I'm looking at maps, got like
[38:33] Speaker 1: an eye that was shut and and and he was like,
[38:38] Speaker 1: wouldn't look at me and the assistant coach is going,
[38:41] Speaker 1: oh you are right. He goes, yeah, I shouldn't have
[38:43] Speaker 1: said it, you know, you fucking shouldn't have said it, right,
[38:45] Speaker 1: And I'm going, what's going on here? And then someone said, yeah,
[38:48] Speaker 1: you roll me and beat up the coach. We're at
[38:51] Speaker 1: the time of the guy Joey played hooker for a
[38:55] Speaker 1: while one yeah played hooker anyway. This opposition coach told
[39:00] Speaker 1: his play out, when you're packing this crump, just kick
[39:02] Speaker 1: Andrew Johns as hard as you can every time in
[39:05] Speaker 1: the shins.
[39:05] Speaker 4: I run into Andrew kicked you back. Yeah, yeah, And
[39:09] Speaker 4: I chipped him and I said, what do you doing
[39:10] Speaker 4: that for? That's not that's not you don't do that
[39:14] Speaker 4: your age anyway, And he said, oh, you said the
[39:17] Speaker 4: other bloke was kicking me. I found out that the
[39:19] Speaker 4: coach told him on a purpose, and I'll fix this again.
[39:24] Speaker 2: What do you go and kick him in the shin?
[39:26] Speaker 4: Yeah? Yeah.
[39:31] Speaker 1: Some of the stuff, mate, you remember, Like I look
[39:34] Speaker 1: at them now, it's almost like sitcom stuff. Does everyone
[39:37] Speaker 1: up at the caravan now street everyone was like big drink.
[39:39] Speaker 1: Its quite raucous, and all of a sudden, he's born
[39:41] Speaker 1: again Christians moved into the band next to us, remember that,
[39:44] Speaker 1: and that, like I'm talking hardcore Christians, that alcohol was
[39:49] Speaker 1: the Devil's thing. Mate, rock and roll music is like Satan's.
[39:53] Speaker 1: If you miss some rock and roll music, it will
[39:55] Speaker 1: ruin your mind. Leaning up in the Hell's.
[39:57] Speaker 3: Cooper, she remember we're watching Ray and she chipped me
[40:01] Speaker 3: about the kids watching that. She said, Dan, let that
[40:04] Speaker 3: into your house. She letting the devil in.
[40:09] Speaker 1: Well, he used to dress up like the devil, didn't
[40:11] Speaker 1: you remember? Once we got there once and we got
[40:14] Speaker 1: quite belligerent. She had chipped us about something. You know,
[40:16] Speaker 1: you don't listen to that music, and I fixed her.
[40:19] Speaker 1: So I went and got the ghetto blaster and put
[40:21] Speaker 1: JOJ Kale's cocaine on.
[40:26] Speaker 3: What about We had a party there one night and
[40:29] Speaker 3: Sludge was telling jokes and they packed up the next
[40:32] Speaker 3: day and they never come back. Yeah, because I was thinking,
[40:35] Speaker 3: oh no, I was just going to be filthy about this.
[40:37] Speaker 3: But we went Remember when we went to we went
[40:40] Speaker 3: to but Eye Barn or something, Yeah, and they had
[40:43] Speaker 3: extraps tattoo on and they played cocaine. She went and
[40:48] Speaker 3: got the bus and they said, come on, everyone's got
[40:51] Speaker 3: to lead because they want to go home. She said,
[40:54] Speaker 3: that's wrong.
[40:54] Speaker 1: That music got to get we're all dancing a time
[40:58] Speaker 1: sitting on the bush.
[41:00] Speaker 2: What about because being the parents of NRL players can
[41:04] Speaker 2: be tough. What about but when you ride the highs
[41:06] Speaker 2: like the ninety seven Grand Final was that? How did
[41:09] Speaker 2: you guys celebrate that as the parents? Were you back
[41:11] Speaker 2: at the least club with these guys or yeah.
[41:14] Speaker 3: We stayed at your mum and dads.
[41:17] Speaker 4: Yeah, so that was a day. That was a daytime
[41:19] Speaker 4: go that's right at the Sydney Foom.
[41:22] Speaker 3: So we got pretty yeah, oh well, it's unbelievable. We didn't.
[41:26] Speaker 3: We just thought we'll go back to the club and
[41:28] Speaker 3: meet everybody. When we got back there, we couldn't.
[41:31] Speaker 1: Get in hundred and undred thousand.
[41:33] Speaker 3: So they couldn't let us in. We got to the
[41:35] Speaker 3: door and they just said we can't open the doors,
[41:37] Speaker 3: can't let you in. So we'll stand with chiefs Mum
[41:41] Speaker 3: and dad, Harold and Judy, and then Harold said there's
[41:45] Speaker 3: people going in. They must be going into the kitchen.
[41:47] Speaker 3: Come on, let's follow them. So we did. We follow
[41:49] Speaker 3: them in and that's how we got into the function.
[41:51] Speaker 1: It was remember our bus went into people climbing the
[41:56] Speaker 1: sycamore trees, jumping on the bus and trying to kick
[41:59] Speaker 1: their way in. The whole city was in this frenzy.
[42:02] Speaker 3: Was even driving back. You know, we just couldn't believe
[42:06] Speaker 3: all the people on the side of the road, all
[42:09] Speaker 3: the overpasses, the roundabouts, people were having barbecues and that
[42:13] Speaker 3: on the roundabouts.
[42:14] Speaker 2: Did you drink for like, did you party as hard
[42:17] Speaker 2: as these boys did five days? You went for five days.
[42:20] Speaker 3: It didn't work for five days.
[42:22] Speaker 1: Because remember because at the time, you don't like, the
[42:25] Speaker 1: birch Pa shut down and all the all the mines
[42:27] Speaker 1: were on strike, Dad, you mean the picket lines. Yeah,
[42:30] Speaker 1: and our bus driver used to buy them, the bus
[42:35] Speaker 1: driver when he was trying to bring the scabs in.
[42:37] Speaker 4: Oh yeah, So what happened The miners were on strike
[42:42] Speaker 4: and they bought the scabs in. We fared out later
[42:45] Speaker 4: they gus from the army, which they probably didn't want
[42:48] Speaker 4: to do it, but they bought them because they could
[42:50] Speaker 4: drive masoonery. So anyway, I was on the picket line
[42:53] Speaker 4: and a good made of mine who's not with Mcryan.
[42:56] Speaker 4: It was part of reasonable But I love the fight.
[42:59] Speaker 4: I loved the anyway, what happened. The scabs are on
[43:05] Speaker 4: the bus and the bus pulls up, so Mick opens
[43:08] Speaker 4: the door with you thro all the luggage, so the
[43:10] Speaker 4: bus couldn't get through the gate. So the driver gets
[43:13] Speaker 4: off and said that mcdad did that again, put the
[43:16] Speaker 4: door big jumped on the bus and locked the door
[43:18] Speaker 4: so the driver couldn't get back in. So he's in
[43:20] Speaker 4: there with the scabs and there's about fifty of them
[43:23] Speaker 4: in there, and he's sallow. What he thinks of him?
[43:26] Speaker 4: Braves th oversea and they never said a word. Blake's
[43:30] Speaker 4: never said a word. But anyway, he was in there
[43:33] Speaker 4: half an hour. There's you get half an hour anyway
[43:36] Speaker 4: if you fish up, open the door, let the driver on.
[43:39] Speaker 1: Remember, wasn't the driver our bus driver with the knights
[43:42] Speaker 1: was at another another time you jumped on the bus
[43:44] Speaker 1: and was getting to job him And he says, oh, no, Gary,
[43:47] Speaker 1: it was.
[43:51] Speaker 4: I don't remember.
[43:53] Speaker 2: I pleased the fifth wasn't there. I remember just telling
[43:58] Speaker 2: me a stro when I was out there not long
[43:59] Speaker 2: ago about you must have been doing some work out
[44:02] Speaker 2: of mine or maybe a steel factory when you're about
[44:05] Speaker 2: ninety Yeah, and you yeah, we.
[44:09] Speaker 4: Were first married, we had no money. So I got
[44:12] Speaker 4: off from the job. I was working for McAuley Brothers,
[44:15] Speaker 4: a curry and they build them had a special smellder
[44:17] Speaker 4: up at Barriber and I got an opportunity to go
[44:21] Speaker 4: up there work and I had to sign a contract
[44:23] Speaker 4: to go and I had to say nine months the
[44:26] Speaker 4: last or three weeks and I come home guard. I said,
[44:29] Speaker 4: where can you come home? Because it was really good money.
[44:31] Speaker 4: We're working seven days a week, four hours a day,
[44:34] Speaker 4: and everything I was getting I was sending it home
[44:36] Speaker 4: to guild in the bank and yeah. So guy said,
[44:42] Speaker 4: what are you doing home? And I said, I missed it.
[44:44] Speaker 4: I wouldn't tell them that I had blue with the boss.
[44:47] Speaker 4: The boss was a rural arrogant bars or let it
[44:49] Speaker 4: get it, and he used to chip you all the time,
[44:52] Speaker 4: you know, don't do that, don't do this, do that,
[44:54] Speaker 4: you know, and I know what I'm doing, mate, No
[44:56] Speaker 4: You're not do it my way and all this sort
[44:57] Speaker 4: of stuff. So I had enough of just so the
[45:02] Speaker 4: doctors over it and he said, well you can go home.
[45:06] Speaker 4: I didn't lose my job to take cross, but anyway
[45:09] Speaker 4: sent me.
[45:11] Speaker 3: So we had to live with MM longer because.
[45:13] Speaker 4: Years years later, years later girl was working one Friday
[45:17] Speaker 4: night and I used to take the boys over to
[45:19] Speaker 4: the Trots and he wouldn't believe it. He is this
[45:22] Speaker 4: blog at the Trots. He comes over, what's the shape
[45:25] Speaker 4: the head to say, hello, I just go away, baite,
[45:28] Speaker 4: I don't to talk.
[45:30] Speaker 1: It's lucky, lucky you did, I mean, yeah, yeah, well.
[45:37] Speaker 4: What happened there? Years later, I'll watch what are they cool?
[45:41] Speaker 4: At Church six six thirty on Sunday night, A Current Affairs,
[45:45] Speaker 4: Current Affairs. There was a stayer in there about they
[45:49] Speaker 4: have one in West Australia and they couldn't get anyone
[45:52] Speaker 4: to work, so they hired Aboriginal people and after a
[45:56] Speaker 4: couple of years kids were born with short, little short
[46:01] Speaker 4: arms with hands from the call, like the little mine babies.
[46:05] Speaker 4: Yeah yeah, right yeah, And they found these deformities in
[46:08] Speaker 4: so the government just shut on down and straight away.
[46:12] Speaker 4: And what they did sixty minutes when this factory where
[46:14] Speaker 4: they were milling asbestos and they had a past scrape
[46:18] Speaker 4: and they run across the girders like that. It was
[46:21] Speaker 4: just like tar picking it up. That's what was getting
[46:26] Speaker 4: in the lungs. It was killed people. Yeah, so it
[46:30] Speaker 4: was very dangerous, yeah, very dangerous.
[46:32] Speaker 2: Yeah, did going back for a second to being the
[46:36] Speaker 2: parents of NRL players and even the grandparents of Jack
[46:40] Speaker 2: and I, which I imagine would have a couple of
[46:41] Speaker 2: lot of shit for. But did did you have any
[46:44] Speaker 2: incidents with people in the in the stadiums or people
[46:47] Speaker 2: sort of putting ship on the boys when you were
[46:49] Speaker 2: growing up?
[46:50] Speaker 4: Growing up?
[46:50] Speaker 1: I mean you had a stink after full time? Yeah
[46:53] Speaker 1: st George, Yeah, yeah, he was a corporate box. So
[46:57] Speaker 1: right after they grabbed him, yeah.
[47:00] Speaker 3: Seeking about about boys beand girls girls not carrying on.
[47:04] Speaker 3: And then Matt come out and Gaz was yelling out
[47:07] Speaker 3: back at him, and Matt come out and he jumped
[47:10] Speaker 3: up into the box. And after that, Gary and I
[47:14] Speaker 3: always had an escort to our car. I don't know
[47:17] Speaker 3: if it was an escort the security, so I don't
[47:21] Speaker 3: know if it was to make sure we didn't create problems,
[47:25] Speaker 3: didn't come here.
[47:26] Speaker 4: What about what about that blog from Nelson's bay he
[47:28] Speaker 4: used to play front row against. Yep, he's dead there.
[47:31] Speaker 4: I think he died drug overdose. I think anyway, he's
[47:35] Speaker 4: causing trouble up in the in the in the in
[47:38] Speaker 4: the club after the game, So all the parents and
[47:42] Speaker 4: girlfriend and mates, and that used to see it at
[47:44] Speaker 4: the back of the bar. The players had come out
[47:46] Speaker 4: of the shed with it all over, drink together before
[47:48] Speaker 4: we went home. So this particular blake is kicked out
[47:51] Speaker 4: because he's playing up, so he comes down. He decides
[47:54] Speaker 4: to cause a bit of trouble. So it's zero Australia,
[47:58] Speaker 4: little boo. He starts say, mate, he said, your two
[48:02] Speaker 4: boys saw rooting each other and all this sort of
[48:04] Speaker 4: stuff and called them names and girls and all that
[48:07] Speaker 4: sort of stuff. And I said, I've had enough of this,
[48:10] Speaker 4: so I've got in by the throat and I read
[48:12] Speaker 4: him up against the brick wall, and I'm trying to
[48:15] Speaker 4: punch you, but riving McCormack's got out of you by
[48:17] Speaker 4: the expert that threshes flew in your mum, she got
[48:21] Speaker 4: two figures up his pushing over his nose. Call him
[48:26] Speaker 4: all sorts of basards, because.
[48:30] Speaker 2: Look we the John's families had some different different fights
[48:35] Speaker 2: in their time. But Trish, Trish hates in a whole
[48:37] Speaker 2: different way. Did you did you guys get electrician initially?
[48:40] Speaker 2: Did you have any good interactions with her?
[48:42] Speaker 3: Yeah?
[48:43] Speaker 2: Did you make it good? Because she can she can
[48:45] Speaker 2: get quite fiery aggressive.
[48:46] Speaker 4: The time she blew up with me one night, called
[48:49] Speaker 4: me a lot of educated idiot, which of course is true,
[48:57] Speaker 4: educated idiot.
[48:59] Speaker 1: The first time.
[49:00] Speaker 4: It's a bit of a fairly jack. Actually, the first
[49:02] Speaker 4: time I brought trisho.
[49:05] Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, we were was going to work and he
[49:09] Speaker 3: was having lunch and he went, hey, girl, Matt's you.
[49:13] Speaker 3: He's got a sheller with him.
[49:15] Speaker 4: He never bought a girl there before.
[49:17] Speaker 1: Joey stay over that time time. So NaN's out, Mom
[49:24] Speaker 1: and Dad and Nan and Joey and Kate. Kate was
[49:28] Speaker 1: like me and Kate were always really really tight.
[49:30] Speaker 3: He used to go and get the cuddle every morning.
[49:32] Speaker 2: Because Kate's quite quite younger, she's ten years young.
[49:35] Speaker 1: So there's a so so she come in in the
[49:38] Speaker 1: mornings Saturday morning and she jump jump in and cuddle
[49:43] Speaker 1: me and wake me up. So this sular night, I
[49:46] Speaker 1: had a girl next to me in bed and I'm
[49:48] Speaker 1: laying there. Next minute I fell jump over and I've gone,
[49:51] Speaker 1: oh fuck it. So she jumps over and she and
[49:55] Speaker 1: then she's.
[49:56] Speaker 3: Looking and then she come out to me and said,
[50:02] Speaker 3: there's a girl in there with Matt. It's Peaky's girlfriend.
[50:05] Speaker 3: Matt port her home because Peaky left her out and
[50:08] Speaker 3: I went, all right, yeah, and so I just thought
[50:12] Speaker 3: I'd better tell you. So when I said, Matt, get
[50:15] Speaker 3: that girl up, get her out of there, or she
[50:17] Speaker 3: walked out, was like the walk of shame. We're all
[50:19] Speaker 3: sitting there, did.
[50:22] Speaker 2: Like was there a rule of the boys can bring
[50:24] Speaker 2: girls home back in the day?
[50:25] Speaker 4: Like what was that was the first I would have
[50:27] Speaker 4: got tested?
[50:28] Speaker 3: And they had double bunks.
[50:32] Speaker 2: He's on the top bunk.
[50:33] Speaker 1: Okay, just quick. Some of the blokes over the years,
[50:38] Speaker 1: right some of it. Because one of the things I
[50:39] Speaker 1: do remember as a kid is like new blokes all
[50:42] Speaker 1: playing practical jokes on each other. And there was a
[50:44] Speaker 1: bloke I think you just passed gray paint ye because
[50:48] Speaker 1: I remember you tell.
[50:50] Speaker 3: Them about night. We had everyone around and next in
[50:53] Speaker 3: the fireber came smash the door, smashed the door in,
[50:57] Speaker 3: and they were going to find us because they said
[51:00] Speaker 3: they could have been could have been a fire and
[51:02] Speaker 3: they're at our place and someone had rung and said
[51:05] Speaker 3: there was a fire at our place. And then all
[51:07] Speaker 3: the boys said it was painy, so gaz rips into
[51:10] Speaker 3: paining and then he left. But we never turned out.
[51:15] Speaker 3: They didn't find us but we had to get a
[51:18] Speaker 3: new door.
[51:18] Speaker 1: For There was just always shenanigans. Yeah, up with the
[51:22] Speaker 1: caravan part at home. As you said, there was always
[51:25] Speaker 1: like you know, always players like you know, we're Dad coaching.
[51:28] Speaker 1: There was just always blokes around like Panda Barry Andrews
[51:32] Speaker 1: For people that don't know, he was a legend at Cronulla.
[51:35] Speaker 1: Then he you at the Roosters and then broke his
[51:38] Speaker 1: arm and just went, you know, and decided to come
[51:40] Speaker 1: to set up and play ragular League and Dad coached him.
[51:42] Speaker 1: But he and Dad were best mates. So Panda just
[51:45] Speaker 1: get blind and then turn up at harm. I remember
[51:48] Speaker 1: that time one of the boys, one of the centers, Pender, said, mate,
[51:53] Speaker 1: what do you keep fucking dropping the ball? When I
[51:55] Speaker 1: kept firing because a gun player? And the Santa goes, mate,
[51:58] Speaker 1: you passed, You passed the ball too hard? He goes
[52:01] Speaker 1: fucking passed the bat? Oh yeah right, So he loves
[52:03] Speaker 1: the Pube comes straight over to our place and he
[52:06] Speaker 1: gets me and Joey and it's right in front.
[52:08] Speaker 3: Of like right out of bed. He got him out
[52:10] Speaker 3: of bed and stood him in front of this glass
[52:12] Speaker 3: door and thrown balls at him.
[52:14] Speaker 1: At full blast like you know from the other side
[52:16] Speaker 1: of the room. Just mate, right over, right out of
[52:18] Speaker 1: the ball as hard as you can't. He just fire
[52:20] Speaker 1: it and bang. Is that too hard? No fucking yeah,
[52:25] Speaker 1: no worries. And he goes back to the part and says, mate,
[52:27] Speaker 1: those two little idiots they can catch.
[52:32] Speaker 3: Who was the How the bloke used to come around
[52:33] Speaker 3: play the boys Nintendo all the time?
[52:36] Speaker 1: Terry Great, Terry Reagan.
[52:39] Speaker 4: You ever heard Terry Reagan sty No, I haven't went.
[52:41] Speaker 4: He went. He left us in eighty two, went to
[52:46] Speaker 4: the Roosters first, and.
[52:47] Speaker 1: He went Roosters, and he went Balmint Tigers, and then
[52:50] Speaker 1: finished at the Candle played in the eighty seven Grand
[52:52] Speaker 1: Final against But mate, you don't at those clubs. Everyone's
[52:56] Speaker 1: got Terry Reagan's stories. He was fucking crazy, so they
[53:00] Speaker 1: there was once Laurie Daily loves to tell this story.
[53:02] Speaker 1: He said, rego, we train on a Friday night. If
[53:06] Speaker 1: we're playing on the Sunday, which is just about always,
[53:08] Speaker 1: he said, rego go to the pub. And he'd have
[53:11] Speaker 1: about fourteen schooners and hop in his car and drive home.
[53:15] Speaker 1: So he said, mate. And he had a lawnmown business,
[53:18] Speaker 1: so he said, mate, this particular night I've trained, go on,
[53:21] Speaker 1: slam slamm the schooners and and he's dry driving home
[53:25] Speaker 1: and all of a sudden there's an RB two just
[53:26] Speaker 1: up the road. What am I going to do? So
[53:28] Speaker 1: he pulls, He pulls the his car over the side
[53:32] Speaker 1: of the road, pulls that, pulls out the mower and
[53:34] Speaker 1: the whippersip and everything. Anyway, he just starts mowing some
[53:36] Speaker 1: bloke's lawn out the front right. This bloke comes out
[53:39] Speaker 1: and goes, mate, what are you doing? And he goes, oh, mate,
[53:45] Speaker 1: there's an RB two up the road. Mate, I've just
[53:47] Speaker 1: jumping up here. May if you let me do this, mate,
[53:49] Speaker 1: I'll know your lawn for free. He goes, you're too
[53:52] Speaker 1: an't He goes, yeah, it's right mate. He goes on,
[53:55] Speaker 1: detective sergeant, when you finish, go out the back about
[54:00] Speaker 1: the back.
[54:00] Speaker 2: To Did he let him? Didn't get in trouble?
[54:04] Speaker 1: No, no, let him? But made some of the things.
[54:07] Speaker 1: He lived with us for a while, didn't he?
[54:09] Speaker 3: Yes.
[54:11] Speaker 4: He rings him up every now and then. He's very
[54:12] Speaker 4: passionate about rugby league, Oh, very very passionate. And he's
[54:18] Speaker 4: always got a wins about someone, you know, some club
[54:20] Speaker 4: or something. But he's good. He's good. We got invited
[54:23] Speaker 4: to his wedding. He got he married Colige Gavilot Horsetralia.
[54:27] Speaker 1: From from uh some of the other stuff, remember like
[54:32] Speaker 1: you said you found a bag of pot and things
[54:34] Speaker 1: like that in the house because he was a standover
[54:36] Speaker 1: man for the Tromboli's notorious crime crime gang down in
[54:41] Speaker 1: Griffith and he was a standover man there. So he
[54:44] Speaker 1: caught wind of him and then he came up and
[54:46] Speaker 1: played for cessnot some characters in their sides.
[54:51] Speaker 4: He left in eighty two. Jimmy Walsh come from Gloucester
[54:54] Speaker 4: in eighty three, didn't he. So Jimmy took over Willie
[54:59] Speaker 4: uh Terry Reagan's flat. So before Rugo left, he pushed
[55:03] Speaker 4: the better side and shot on the carpet. Then he
[55:06] Speaker 4: pulled the bed back, so Jimmy and Vickie moved into
[55:08] Speaker 4: the unit. Vicky used to say to Christious smelling that user,
[55:12] Speaker 4: I don't know what it is anywhere. One day she
[55:15] Speaker 4: got our now to look under the bed. It is
[55:16] Speaker 4: his bloody big tur.
[55:20] Speaker 1: Just on a serious turn here a little bit like so, Dad,
[55:25] Speaker 1: you were the best junior coming through at Curry Curry
[55:27] Speaker 1: and Curry Carry has produced most rugby league nationals of
[55:32] Speaker 1: any town city in Australia's produced that many. It's unbelievable.
[55:35] Speaker 4: Sixteen I think.
[55:36] Speaker 1: Yeah, your next door neighbor was Johnny Sadler. He's not
[55:41] Speaker 1: used to live over the over the back, over the back. Yeah,
[55:45] Speaker 1: Johnny Sadler and Garry Salov and Billy Hamilton, all those
[55:49] Speaker 1: players incredible players. But mate, when and Dad met, Dad
[55:54] Speaker 1: went to cessnot because Curry. Curry signed Johnny Raper, didn't they. Yeah,
[55:58] Speaker 1: so the great, the immortal Johnny he went to Curry.
[56:01] Speaker 1: So Dad went to sesnot when he was young. But
[56:03] Speaker 1: I'm telling you now, mate, when cesnot played Curry, you
[56:06] Speaker 1: can go to all heavy derbies all around the world,
[56:10] Speaker 1: you know, Liverpool, Evert and everything. Nothing would have been
[56:13] Speaker 1: more violent in the crowd and the.
[56:15] Speaker 4: Games and that ten flights on the on the hill
[56:19] Speaker 4: like a whole I.
[56:20] Speaker 1: Mean sometimes just to bring in the right squad. To
[56:22] Speaker 1: remember that time at cesnot the whole hill was just
[56:26] Speaker 1: it was just like a right like a ball.
[56:29] Speaker 2: In book broad Is it still like that still?
[56:32] Speaker 4: So you get the crowd as they used to get.
[56:35] Speaker 1: I remember being a kid, it was terrifying.
[56:37] Speaker 4: I went to stock in seventy three. The year after
[56:40] Speaker 4: they won the premiership with seventy two and they matched Systo.
[56:45] Speaker 4: Maitland played in the Grand final seventy so they opened
[56:47] Speaker 4: the season at Synock. So Sesnock played Maitland and it
[56:51] Speaker 4: was the football ground was an noble because they used
[56:53] Speaker 4: to play cricket there in the summer. There was that
[56:57] Speaker 4: many people there that they had to get the kids
[56:59] Speaker 4: and put a between the sideline and the fence so
[57:02] Speaker 4: the kids could see. We couldn't run on the ground,
[57:04] Speaker 4: we had to walk and step over the kids singing
[57:06] Speaker 4: on the playing fields. There was that many people well,
[57:09] Speaker 4: and I remember I think it was about twenty cents
[57:12] Speaker 4: to get in for an adult, nothing for kids. And
[57:15] Speaker 4: I heard someone say after the game, the Donnie Scayfield,
[57:21] Speaker 4: So what was the gate takers today? He said, I
[57:23] Speaker 4: think it was five thousand dollars that's how many people.
[57:28] Speaker 3: In.
[57:28] Speaker 4: Yeah? Is that?
[57:29] Speaker 1: Gal?
[57:29] Speaker 2: Did you did you hate watching Gary play because that's
[57:31] Speaker 2: from a different era, that's as violent as a sport gets.
[57:35] Speaker 3: No, I didn't worry me.
[57:36] Speaker 1: I hate.
[57:36] Speaker 3: I worried me more watching the boys play.
[57:39] Speaker 2: I was going to ask you that who what did like?
[57:41] Speaker 2: You had your partner. You got this got your sons, but.
[57:45] Speaker 1: Look back on But it would be when we go
[57:47] Speaker 1: to Curry and Place versus Curry. I'm telling you now, mate,
[57:51] Speaker 1: they like the crowd would find me and Joey when
[57:54] Speaker 1: we're young. Boys may may be full going adults punts
[57:58] Speaker 1: the shit out of us. You know. I go you mum,
[58:01] Speaker 1: and sometimes women when I see him, boys spat on me.
[58:03] Speaker 1: One day, Like the level of rivalry between those two
[58:07] Speaker 1: towns was just insane.
[58:08] Speaker 3: Well there was even people would get up like seven
[58:11] Speaker 3: o'clock in the morning, go down to the ground and
[58:13] Speaker 3: park trucks, tabletop trucks outside so they could stand on
[58:18] Speaker 3: the trucks because they knew would get in wat fence.
[58:22] Speaker 1: It was unbelievable. And Dad's the size of the dad coach.
[58:26] Speaker 1: They'd start the season all the time, play one of
[58:28] Speaker 1: the big Sydney sides. So one year Balmain blocker Roach
[58:32] Speaker 1: still says, he goes, mate, I'll never forget we played
[58:34] Speaker 1: your dad's side. He said. I was a young bloke
[58:36] Speaker 1: and I'm up against a blow called Willy Tarry. Willy
[58:38] Speaker 1: Terry is a North Coenslander. The dad signed to come
[58:41] Speaker 1: down and he said blockers standing there, fucking blocker can fight,
[58:44] Speaker 1: and Blocker went, I'm going to teach you a lesson today,
[58:47] Speaker 1: old man. And he said, Willy Tarry as about to packet,
[58:51] Speaker 1: helped me off and just went bang. He said, Maddie
[58:53] Speaker 1: hit me that hard, he said, I literally ship my
[58:56] Speaker 1: pants said he hit me bal main beats. That's not
[59:01] Speaker 1: that ninth to thirteen nine. Then the next year they
[59:04] Speaker 1: played new Town. Newtown that year made the Grand Final
[59:07] Speaker 1: and I think Newtown but you're six to two or something,
[59:10] Speaker 1: so made it was. It was top class football, but
[59:13] Speaker 1: violent beyond earth.
[59:15] Speaker 4: Yeah, very violent. I remember when I first started to
[59:18] Speaker 4: play a grade. All the old blokes used to say,
[59:21] Speaker 4: you've got to get your arm up, as I used
[59:22] Speaker 4: to get knocked out a fair bit. So you're run
[59:25] Speaker 4: into the ruck with the ball and then you have
[59:27] Speaker 4: arm cocked up. Well, I don't say you wouldn't cop
[59:28] Speaker 4: a stiff up said like, it wasn't a pedally that
[59:33] Speaker 4: they knock out.
[59:35] Speaker 2: How do you see the modern game now, then, because
[59:37] Speaker 2: you've lived through basically three or four different generations of
[59:40] Speaker 2: rugby league, I don't like it. You don't like them
[59:42] Speaker 2: modern game?
[59:43] Speaker 4: No, they don't like it at all there's no contest
[59:48] Speaker 4: anymore for the ball, so that they can't kick the
[59:51] Speaker 4: ball in the ruck. The scrums are a waste of time,
[59:55] Speaker 4: but may as well just have a bunny scratch between
[59:58] Speaker 4: two blokes, get to have they reads together and try
[1:00:01] Speaker 4: the ball in the middle so you can rake back
[1:00:02] Speaker 4: the first. But it's just I don't think it's tough,
[1:00:09] Speaker 4: don't get me wrong, but uh there's a big there's
[1:00:14] Speaker 4: a big gap between eight and the bottom tobes. You
[1:00:19] Speaker 4: can only pick the top eight every year. Just who
[1:00:23] Speaker 4: they buy and what they've got. It's the same as
[1:00:26] Speaker 4: the women's game. The women's go, you'll forget about it
[1:00:30] Speaker 4: now it's going to be Roasters and Brisbane now they
[1:00:34] Speaker 4: let just your southwill gather Risband. I don't know why
[1:00:38] Speaker 4: Newcastle that we're going to have to level that out.
[1:00:40] Speaker 1: It's too unfair. Again, just to finish, we'll say this
[1:00:45] Speaker 1: like when we talk about you know, the different eras,
[1:00:48] Speaker 1: to let people know this is going to sound. When
[1:00:50] Speaker 1: you first started playing at Cessnock, you bake the day
[1:00:56] Speaker 1: of the game. You used to meet at the pub,
[1:00:57] Speaker 1: is that right? And have a few students they did.
[1:01:02] Speaker 1: Col and Gordon Bradley, the twin boys. They grew up
[1:01:05] Speaker 1: with the Marion Curry. They used to go out and
[1:01:06] Speaker 1: I went with and they'd have four minutes before they.
[1:01:09] Speaker 4: Played the day of the game. The day of the game,
[1:01:12] Speaker 4: and Cole said me, one day, you come down the pub, Gas,
[1:01:16] Speaker 4: I said, what for? You said, I have a beer?
[1:01:18] Speaker 4: I said, no, I'm not here before I play. I
[1:01:20] Speaker 4: wouldn't have one the night before.
[1:01:22] Speaker 2: Oh you didn't. You didn't do that.
[1:01:24] Speaker 4: No, I couldn't have played. But the old days, when
[1:01:28] Speaker 4: I first started playing grade, they used to drink wine.
[1:01:31] Speaker 4: They have sherry in the shed or musket and all
[1:01:35] Speaker 4: the Fords used to share a bottle around and they
[1:01:38] Speaker 4: knocked the bottle off between the sixers. What yeah, what?
[1:01:42] Speaker 2: What was the theory behind that?
[1:01:43] Speaker 1: Why?
[1:01:43] Speaker 2: Wine is that?
[1:01:45] Speaker 4: So? You used to make clear clear your lungs, say
[1:01:47] Speaker 4: you can breathe it?
[1:01:49] Speaker 1: And what about the coal mines games? Just quickly, you know,
[1:01:51] Speaker 1: working down there you took I remember Gas used to
[1:01:54] Speaker 1: say to me, what do you want to do your life?
[1:01:55] Speaker 1: I'll be a coal miner, he said, I'll fix you.
[1:01:57] Speaker 1: You took me down there and went fucking hell the
[1:02:00] Speaker 1: place she used to drink down there, down the mines.
[1:02:02] Speaker 4: No, not down the mines, but they used to drink
[1:02:05] Speaker 4: before when I was working afternoon shift. A lot of blokes.
[1:02:08] Speaker 4: She used to play golf of a Friday, so then
[1:02:11] Speaker 4: they'd have half of us as skewness. And it wasn't
[1:02:14] Speaker 4: the place to go half half pissed too, because you
[1:02:17] Speaker 4: had to be aware of what was going on around
[1:02:19] Speaker 4: you all the time. A lot of the tragedy. Yeah,
[1:02:27] Speaker 4: if I got time to tell them about the shaft
[1:02:30] Speaker 4: we got caught in the shaft. Yeah, this story. What
[1:02:34] Speaker 4: happened was a Friday night. We were working swing shifts,
[1:02:38] Speaker 4: so we started at sixth night finished at two in
[1:02:41] Speaker 4: the morning, but we used to work right through the
[1:02:43] Speaker 4: Saturday and doing double shift. So this night we're all
[1:02:47] Speaker 4: prepared for the double shift. Anyway, been raining about forty
[1:02:54] Speaker 4: eight hours, and we had three big dams at the mine,
[1:02:57] Speaker 4: which just used to pump the war out of the
[1:02:59] Speaker 4: dams and up the top that had filled it down
[1:03:01] Speaker 4: to the second one filled it own a third and
[1:03:04] Speaker 4: then they'd pumped back down the pit and we'd use
[1:03:06] Speaker 4: it again to clear all the dust used to hose
[1:03:10] Speaker 4: it down and all that sort of stuff. So we
[1:03:12] Speaker 4: used a lot of water anyway, what happened. The top
[1:03:15] Speaker 4: then burst and all the water from the three dams
[1:03:20] Speaker 4: come down the hill and where we used to get
[1:03:22] Speaker 4: in the sharer in the in the cage to go
[1:03:25] Speaker 4: down the mine, which was eighteen hundred feet the water
[1:03:30] Speaker 4: was the lowest point on the property. So the water
[1:03:32] Speaker 4: was just going down on a big drain. So the
[1:03:35] Speaker 4: pit flooded and worried boy and we were sort of
[1:03:40] Speaker 4: about one hundred meters higher than where the shaft stopped
[1:03:44] Speaker 4: at the bottom. So we got word we had to evacuate,
[1:03:48] Speaker 4: and that was everybody. So we got we got the
[1:03:51] Speaker 4: pit bottom. By that stage the water was up to
[1:03:54] Speaker 4: our waists. The cage was waiting for us, and the
[1:03:57] Speaker 4: manager was there. The other manager was there, the black
[1:04:00] Speaker 4: charge everybody that day. He was there and he had
[1:04:03] Speaker 4: a sheet of paper cool at your name jumping. He
[1:04:06] Speaker 4: made sure that Lydd never left anyone behind. So we
[1:04:09] Speaker 4: organed in. The shaft was overloaded because when only holed
[1:04:13] Speaker 4: about maybe thirty thirty people, so I remember correctly, and
[1:04:20] Speaker 4: we probably had twice as many blokes. And so they
[1:04:24] Speaker 4: said right over and shut the gates, let's go. So
[1:04:26] Speaker 4: they rang up, they rang the bills three times that
[1:04:29] Speaker 4: mony the winds driver could hit the three bills, so
[1:04:32] Speaker 4: we're right to go. Clear. We started going up. We
[1:04:35] Speaker 4: got up nine hundred feet in the power and off
[1:04:38] Speaker 4: the wind shouse got plooted and we're suspended in the air,
[1:04:43] Speaker 4: and I think we're in there nine hours. Anyway, what
[1:04:48] Speaker 4: happened They finished up, They lowered a walk he talked,
[1:04:52] Speaker 4: He down on a y rope down to us and
[1:04:55] Speaker 4: the under managed charge. He got on the and they said,
[1:04:59] Speaker 4: what's happened is the water's gone over the transformer and
[1:05:03] Speaker 4: it's flooded. We've run the energy company to come out,
[1:05:07] Speaker 4: bring a transformer out. We're going to try and get
[1:05:10] Speaker 4: this out. We're going to hook the new transform up
[1:05:13] Speaker 4: and we'll start and we'll winches out. So they took hours,
[1:05:17] Speaker 4: and anyway, I didn't we're there for no one anyway.
[1:05:20] Speaker 4: So anyway, they hooked the power up and they loaded
[1:05:23] Speaker 4: the thing back down again. They said, right, everyone braced themselves,
[1:05:27] Speaker 4: were right to go. So they turned the power on
[1:05:31] Speaker 4: and the brakes wouldn't work, and we started to go.
[1:05:34] Speaker 4: We dropped about one hundred foot and they slammed the
[1:05:37] Speaker 4: emergency brakes on and we're bombed up and there like that,
[1:05:40] Speaker 4: and it was that scary. If the rope will broke,
[1:05:44] Speaker 4: we're all dead. Anyway, they loaded it down and they
[1:05:49] Speaker 4: said we're gonna We're got to get another one. So
[1:05:52] Speaker 4: they had to bring another. They didn't have enough power
[1:05:55] Speaker 4: in that generator to pull us all out. It was
[1:05:58] Speaker 4: too heavy, the case was too heavy. So they hooked
[1:06:01] Speaker 4: another one up. The speaking down again and they said, right,
[1:06:05] Speaker 4: we're going to try again. So sure enough we got up,
[1:06:09] Speaker 4: but we're only creeping like that. The whole thing was vibrating.
[1:06:13] Speaker 4: Blokes were crying like when we got out, blokes actually
[1:06:17] Speaker 4: come back to work. It was that scary.
[1:06:19] Speaker 1: Did you go back?
[1:06:20] Speaker 4: Yeah? I did? But anyway, pretty emotional stuff. This. So
[1:06:27] Speaker 4: when we got to the surface, they have these steel
[1:06:31] Speaker 4: foot They lift the cage up above the level of
[1:06:34] Speaker 4: the ground. These steel fruit come out and they set
[1:06:37] Speaker 4: the cage on it and then they opened the gates
[1:06:39] Speaker 4: and let you out. So what happened on the gate
[1:06:43] Speaker 4: side we would get out, those foot didn't come out.
[1:06:48] Speaker 4: There's something wrong. The the back ones come out and
[1:06:51] Speaker 4: they sat the cage down and the weight come off
[1:06:54] Speaker 4: the rope and we tipped like that, tip sideways and
[1:06:57] Speaker 4: it sjammed, so we couldn't get the gates up. We
[1:07:00] Speaker 4: couldn't get the men out, and blacks were screaming, yelling,
[1:07:04] Speaker 4: and they said staying, don't try and get out, staying
[1:07:07] Speaker 4: to stay in the cage. So they got everybody. They
[1:07:10] Speaker 4: dragged blacks back off trying to climb over the over
[1:07:13] Speaker 4: the gate, dragged blacks back in and they'd lifted it
[1:07:17] Speaker 4: up and they got a hammer and they built it
[1:07:19] Speaker 4: into the stool foot because they finished something. They come
[1:07:21] Speaker 4: in and sat the cage out the gates. So we
[1:07:25] Speaker 4: all got out. So the mine manager was there, the
[1:07:31] Speaker 4: police were there, the fire we gave resume mine's rescue
[1:07:35] Speaker 4: were there. Everyone the hundreds of boot will support this stuff.
[1:07:40] Speaker 4: And that was it. But anybody they run home, didn't they?
[1:07:44] Speaker 4: They rang all the bloke's parents informed of what was
[1:07:48] Speaker 4: going on and tolerbant. Circumstance was very emotionally.
[1:07:53] Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember you wake something and I didn't you.
[1:07:56] Speaker 1: You said it's looking pretty bad. Dad's going yeah, yeah,
[1:08:00] Speaker 1: well i'll tell you what after that. I think we
[1:08:03] Speaker 1: need a drink.
[1:08:03] Speaker 4: Guess I had to drink.
[1:08:07] Speaker 1: Give Uncle Herbie a call.
[1:08:09] Speaker 2: Thanks guys, thanks for coming on. We've been wanting to
[1:08:12] Speaker 2: get you on for ages.
[1:08:14] Speaker 4: Very good.
[1:08:15] Speaker 2: We could get, we could we could get you could
[1:08:16] Speaker 2: talk tell stories for hours later on three part four,
[1:08:21] Speaker 2: we'll see how long we're all kicking.
[1:08:22] Speaker 4: I had another one four years, but we don't have time.
[1:08:25] Speaker 1: Quick one. We got a quick one.
[1:08:28] Speaker 2: Yeah, go on, go on, let's kick it, just quick one.
[1:08:31] Speaker 2: Don't worry about Jack.
[1:08:33] Speaker 4: When I was when I was a junior Curry. When
[1:08:36] Speaker 4: I was a junior Curry, we used to play. They
[1:08:38] Speaker 4: used to They never had Bendy plays for the team.
[1:08:41] Speaker 4: They're lucky to get us a third grade side, and
[1:08:43] Speaker 4: they'd be all short for the reserve grade, so they
[1:08:45] Speaker 4: used to bring unders up. We were allowed to play
[1:08:48] Speaker 4: five games through the year of reserve grade. So movie
[1:08:52] Speaker 4: good mate Race. He was playing in the center and
[1:08:54] Speaker 4: I was playing lock and we played South new Castle.
[1:08:57] Speaker 4: We had a black name Eardie O'Brien and Curry was
[1:09:01] Speaker 4: an old old front rower, old tough as aniles, old bloke.
[1:09:06] Speaker 4: So we're playing against South and they brought this kid
[1:09:08] Speaker 4: down from Narrow broy and he was about six foot five.
[1:09:11] Speaker 4: This kid, big bloke, hard to handle, and Ernie was
[1:09:14] Speaker 4: into me. He said, gas, get into this blog. Don't
[1:09:17] Speaker 4: you over and I'll do me best. And I couldn't
[1:09:21] Speaker 4: handle him, you know, he's British, be carefuy with's sort
[1:09:23] Speaker 4: of a block. So we get into the schedule. Outside
[1:09:27] Speaker 4: Ernie said, don't you worry, Ernie. I'll sort him out
[1:09:30] Speaker 4: the second half right over. So Ernie's locked him up
[1:09:33] Speaker 4: and he's going wak a home building. They're both on
[1:09:37] Speaker 4: the ground and Ernie saitting there. Kenny bow was referee.
[1:09:41] Speaker 4: He said, come on, Ernie, get up, and he said
[1:09:43] Speaker 4: I can't. He said why not? He said, I'll ship me.
[1:09:46] Speaker 4: So he said, are you kidding me? He said no.
[1:09:51] Speaker 4: He said see here from bucket and the sponge and
[1:09:53] Speaker 4: another pair of shorts. So Patyas was a trader. He
[1:09:57] Speaker 4: come running there. What's wrong? And he said, on the
[1:10:00] Speaker 4: your shorts shipped yourself. So so they brief the shorts
[1:10:04] Speaker 4: out and give me the buck and warded all the
[1:10:06] Speaker 4: two two teams, who all stood around in said of
[1:10:08] Speaker 4: the crowd couldn't see we're piercing ourself far. So anyway
[1:10:14] Speaker 4: they wash you up against guys. Kenny Bayer gives a
[1:10:17] Speaker 4: shout to appenalty for Caserne wouldn't get up. The next
[1:10:21] Speaker 4: we hear this rural laughter from the hill. Pat's over
[1:10:24] Speaker 4: there and he's got the shorts up showing the crowd
[1:10:28] Speaker 4: pull the ship over the back of the short, good
[1:10:33] Speaker 4: old day.
[1:10:35] Speaker 2: Let's go
