[0:28] Speaker 1: I'm so glad you're here for storytime, especially because in
[0:33] Speaker 1: this episode we have a tale involving one of our
[0:36] Speaker 1: most requested characters, a dragon. We'll be making our way
[0:43] Speaker 1: to Asia to hear about a girl who goes on
[0:46] Speaker 1: a grand adventure to help the sleep Dragon, and our
[0:51] Speaker 1: friend Alexa is here to read it to us. So,
[0:58] Speaker 1: whether you're here for a nap, for bed, or just
[1:02] Speaker 1: for fun, find a comfortable position and get nice and snug,
[1:11] Speaker 1: and let's take a big soothing breath together. Ready inhale
[1:19] Speaker 1: slowly and exhale gently. Perfect. Now we are ready to
[1:34] Speaker 1: imagine all the wonderful scenes in this story. So picture
[1:42] Speaker 1: in your mind a land covered in lush, green rainforest.
[1:51] Speaker 1: Right in the middle of that rainforest is a big,
[1:55] Speaker 1: sprawling city, and this is where our story begins.
[2:18] Speaker 2: In the north of Vietnam is a city built between
[2:23] Speaker 2: rivers and dotted with beautiful lakes. The streets are scattered
[2:32] Speaker 2: with rainforest, plants and trees. People cycle past wearing bright
[2:41] Speaker 2: colorful clothing and sell tropical fruit and leafy vegetables out
[2:49] Speaker 2: of wide baskets. The air is full of the smell
[2:55] Speaker 2: of steamed rice, setling barbecue, and the sound of motorbikes
[3:04] Speaker 2: and taxis. This city is called Hanoi, the capital of
[3:14] Speaker 2: this country, and at his home to a little girl
[3:19] Speaker 2: named Lynn. The houses in Hanoi are very tall and
[3:28] Speaker 2: very narrow. Lynn lived in a very tall, narrow house,
[3:36] Speaker 2: painted deep yellow and fringed with potted plants. Below her,
[3:44] Speaker 2: there was a dress shop, and Lynn was friends with
[3:49] Speaker 2: the lady who sewed the beautiful dresses by hand. Together
[3:56] Speaker 2: they would sit drinking tea and talking. It was one
[4:04] Speaker 2: summer night that our story takes place. Then lay on
[4:11] Speaker 2: her bed, tossing and turning. She tried counting backwards from
[4:19] Speaker 2: one hundred. She tried drinking some fresh cool water. She
[4:28] Speaker 2: even took a deep breath into her belly and halted
[4:33] Speaker 2: until she couldn't hold it anymore and had to let
[4:38] Speaker 2: it out. It didn't matter what she did, she could
[4:47] Speaker 2: not get to sleep. So she sat up and swung
[4:54] Speaker 2: her legs over the bed. Her bare feet touched the
[4:59] Speaker 2: sp smooth tile floor. She wrinckled her toes against it.
[5:08] Speaker 2: Then she stood up and walked over to her window.
[5:15] Speaker 2: It was a French window with two long, narrow doors
[5:21] Speaker 2: with glass that led onto a little balcony. She opened
[5:29] Speaker 2: up the doors and stepped out onto the balcony. The warm,
[5:38] Speaker 2: sticky air pressed against her face as she scowled at
[5:44] Speaker 2: the night sky. There were no stars tonight. Instead, the
[5:54] Speaker 2: sky was covered by a thick cloud. Lynn side. She
[6:03] Speaker 2: wished she could go to sleep. Then she remembered a
[6:10] Speaker 2: trick that her mother had told her if she lit
[6:16] Speaker 2: a candle and asked for sleep, it would come. Lynn
[6:23] Speaker 2: hurried back inside and searched for a candle. She opened
[6:31] Speaker 2: her drawers, looked behind her bedside table, and even inside
[6:38] Speaker 2: her mother's shoe boxes. Finally, under her bed she found
[6:48] Speaker 2: a small, bright red candle. She scooped it up and
[6:54] Speaker 2: carried it to the balcony. She was just placing it
[7:01] Speaker 2: down when she realized she didn't know how to light it. Annoyed,
[7:11] Speaker 2: she picked the candle up and threw it off the balcony,
[7:18] Speaker 2: all the time thinking how unfair it was that she
[7:23] Speaker 2: couldn't sleep. She turned her back on the night and
[7:31] Speaker 2: was just about to go inside when she felt a curious,
[7:38] Speaker 2: tangling feeling moving through the air. It was as if
[7:44] Speaker 2: a cool, busy wind was blowing on the back of
[7:48] Speaker 2: her neck. Lynn turned around and her mouth fell open.
[7:58] Speaker 2: There floating in the air was a glittering, red and
[8:03] Speaker 2: gold dragon. Now this was a Vietnamese dragon. Its body
[8:14] Speaker 2: was long, thin, and flat like a snake. Its kind
[8:22] Speaker 2: face was fringed with magnificent eyebrows, a pointed beard, and
[8:29] Speaker 2: big green eyes. It didn't need wings to fly, It
[8:37] Speaker 2: just swished its body from side to side, like an
[8:43] Speaker 2: eel swimming in the sea. Lynne felt herself taking a
[8:50] Speaker 2: deep breath just looking at the beautiful creature. Then he
[8:59] Speaker 2: spoke to her. His voice was musical and twinkling. Lynn
[9:08] Speaker 2: imagined that it must be what starlight sounded like, but
[9:15] Speaker 2: his words were sad words. The dragon apologized he knew
[9:25] Speaker 2: she had summoned him to help her sleep, but he
[9:30] Speaker 2: could do no such thing. Lynn laughed, she couldn't remember
[9:39] Speaker 2: summoning him. So the dragon explained that when children throw
[9:45] Speaker 2: a red offering into the night and wish for sleep,
[9:51] Speaker 2: he must come and help them. You see, he was
[9:58] Speaker 2: the sleep dragon. He shook his head sadly. Usually he
[10:07] Speaker 2: could help any child get to sleep by using his
[10:12] Speaker 2: special sleep pillow and soothing song. But tonight there was
[10:20] Speaker 2: nothing he could do. He had lost the pillow. He
[10:28] Speaker 2: had searched everywhere but had not found it. All the
[10:36] Speaker 2: children that needed him tonight and every night after would
[10:42] Speaker 2: be disappointed. Lynn felt a great rush of caring sweep
[10:49] Speaker 2: over her for the sleep dragon. She rushed to her
[10:55] Speaker 2: bed and picked up her own pillow. She offered it
[11:02] Speaker 2: to the dragon to use instead, but the dragon smiled.
[11:10] Speaker 2: A sleep pillow is a special pillow that must be
[11:15] Speaker 2: sewn together at the temple on top of Dragon Mountain,
[11:22] Speaker 2: and no dragon can sew. But Lynde's face lit up.
[11:31] Speaker 2: She knew exactly how to sew a pillow. She looked
[11:37] Speaker 2: at the dragon wide eyed and told him she would
[11:42] Speaker 2: help him make a new pillow. The dragon looked at her,
[11:49] Speaker 2: and he knew she could do it. Then a glimmer
[11:54] Speaker 2: of gold shimmered all through his body, the air tingle
[12:02] Speaker 2: and sparkle and swish. She laughed as he circled through
[12:08] Speaker 2: the air and excitement. Then he helped her climb up
[12:14] Speaker 2: onto his back. His scales felt cool and refreshing. Lyn
[12:24] Speaker 2: let her fingers slide along them and felt a sense
[12:29] Speaker 2: of happiness fill her heart. Then, with a final glitter,
[12:37] Speaker 2: the dragon took off and flew into the night. As
[12:44] Speaker 2: the air rushed past them, Lynn felt her smile stretching
[12:51] Speaker 2: wider and wider across her face. Below them, joy was
[13:00] Speaker 2: getting smaller and smaller. She watched, delighted. She felt the
[13:10] Speaker 2: wind fanning her hair out behind her and swirling against
[13:15] Speaker 2: her warm skin. They climbed higher and closer to the
[13:21] Speaker 2: gray cloud until it was right above them. The dragon
[13:29] Speaker 2: wriggled around to tell her they were going through the
[13:33] Speaker 2: cloud and not to be afraid. But Lynn wasn't afraid,
[13:41] Speaker 2: not at all. They broke into the cloud cover. It
[13:49] Speaker 2: pressed against Lynn like a thousand tiny droplets of gold water.
[13:58] Speaker 2: She pulled in a deep breath and felt the cold
[14:03] Speaker 2: fill her lungs. The night disappeared and all she could
[14:11] Speaker 2: see was thick, swirling gray. She held onto the dragon
[14:21] Speaker 2: and bowed her head close to his body. Then all
[14:28] Speaker 2: of a sudden, the cloud stopped. They burst out into
[14:34] Speaker 2: the most beautiful sight lind had ever seen. Below her,
[14:43] Speaker 2: the cloud lay suspended like a vast gray blanket. Above them,
[14:51] Speaker 2: the endless night sky stretched out, clear and sparkling with
[14:58] Speaker 2: stars that Lin had never seen before. In the distance,
[15:06] Speaker 2: a huge column of fluffy white clouds rose up to
[15:11] Speaker 2: reach the heavens. She let out a sigh of amazement.
[15:20] Speaker 2: Once again, the dragon wriggled around. He told her that
[15:28] Speaker 2: first they must find the purest white cloud for stuffing
[15:34] Speaker 2: the pillow. Lynn nodded, and the dragon zoomed off towards
[15:41] Speaker 2: the column of clouds. As they traveled through the silent night,
[15:51] Speaker 2: Lynn realized how peaceful it was to be there. Finally
[16:00] Speaker 2: they reached the column and the dragon circled it. Line
[16:08] Speaker 2: saw it was tinged with pale pinks and blues. But
[16:14] Speaker 2: then they came across a patch of the purest sparkling white.
[16:24] Speaker 2: The dragon nodded. She reached out and used her hand
[16:31] Speaker 2: to scoop up the white patch. The cloud felt like
[16:37] Speaker 2: warm feathers in her hand, so different from the wet,
[16:43] Speaker 2: gray clouds. She grabbed as much as she could before
[16:50] Speaker 2: the dragon soared away, both their hearts happy with their success,
[17:01] Speaker 2: Lynne stuffed the cloud into her pajama shirt to keep
[17:05] Speaker 2: it safe. The dragon told her to hold on tight,
[17:13] Speaker 2: and then he spiraled up to the heavens. As he spiraled,
[17:22] Speaker 2: great golden sparks flew from his mouth, and he drew
[17:27] Speaker 2: a perfect rectangle in the air with it. And when
[17:34] Speaker 2: the sparks had faded, Lynde saw a rectangle of night
[17:40] Speaker 2: sky drifting down as if it were a piece of
[17:44] Speaker 2: fabric he had simply cut. She reached out her hand
[17:53] Speaker 2: and caught the piece of night sky belt as smooth
[18:01] Speaker 2: and cool as water. She let it run through her
[18:08] Speaker 2: fingers before tucking it into her shirt. With the cloud,
[18:17] Speaker 2: then the dragon turned down into a great dive towards
[18:22] Speaker 2: the earth. Lyn held on tight as they rushed back
[18:29] Speaker 2: down through the gray cloud, but this time they popped
[18:38] Speaker 2: out above the countryside. Small jagged mountains, covered in rainforest
[18:50] Speaker 2: and fringed with rice fields were beneath them. They soared
[18:59] Speaker 2: and sput I rolled down and Lynn noticed a tiny
[19:05] Speaker 2: light flickering on top of a mountain. They drew closer
[19:15] Speaker 2: and closer to the light. Then Lyn saw it was
[19:23] Speaker 2: the temple at the top of Dragon Mountain. They came
[19:32] Speaker 2: to a stop at the temple. It was small and red,
[19:39] Speaker 2: and inside it was lit with candlelight. Lyn climbed off
[19:47] Speaker 2: of the dragon and approached it. Inside was a single
[19:55] Speaker 2: golden needle threaded with golden and silk. She sat down
[20:05] Speaker 2: and took out the night sky and the clouds and
[20:10] Speaker 2: got to work. She worked quickly and peacefully, and as
[20:21] Speaker 2: she sewed, she remembered the beauty of the night sky.
[20:30] Speaker 2: She could almost feel the light of the stars on
[20:35] Speaker 2: her face. As she worked, the dragon began to sing
[20:45] Speaker 2: a slow, soothing song. Lynn felt it wash over her
[20:54] Speaker 2: like a wave on a calm sea with every pull
[21:03] Speaker 2: of the needle. Then relaxed a little more until finally
[21:11] Speaker 2: she finished the pillow. She held it out for the
[21:19] Speaker 2: dragon to see, but she was so tired that it
[21:25] Speaker 2: fell from her hands. The dragon smiled. He placed it
[21:35] Speaker 2: under her head and laid her down on the ground.
[21:41] Speaker 2: Her breathing became slow and rhythmic, and her heart was
[21:47] Speaker 2: warm and full. She felt her eyelids flutter. Then she
[21:59] Speaker 2: let herself drift into the sleep she had wanted so much.
[22:10] Speaker 2: It was the kind of rest that would restore and
[22:14] Speaker 2: refresh her, and she knew that when she woke up,
[22:23] Speaker 2: she would be back in her own bed, with her
[22:27] Speaker 2: heart full of thanks for her magical night with the
[22:33] Speaker 2: sleep dragon
